The mining industry faces complex and urgent challenges driven by an increasing demand for raw materials, and a socially demanding globalised world. The extraction of primary raw materials is today more important than ever as one of the cornerstones towards a sustainable future since the increasing demand for the raw materials required for the energy transition. In the last three years, leading countries as USA, China, Canada, Australia, and the European Union (EU) have developed and adopted strategies to enhance domestic extraction capabilities, diversifying sources, fostering innovation in recycling, and promoting international collaboration related to critical raw materials. On 2022, the Inflation Reduction Act was signed into law in the USA, in June 2023, the Australian Critical Minerals Strategy 2023–2030 was published and in March 2024, the Council of the EU adopted the European Critical Raw Materials Act. On the other hand, raw materials extraction is facing higher environmental and safety standards and regulations, as well as scrutiny from the broader public. Regrettable environmental accidents as tailing dam failures or acid mine drainage occurrences have led to a general distrust of mining activities leaving mining companies with the dual imperative of increasing output while implementing sustainability, decarbonisation, and circularity as a core value in their production processes. This challenging environment offers the opportunity to enhance ‘blue mining’ (BM) as a sustainable holistic approach that integrates the principles needed to plan sustainable, reliable, and responsible mines for today’s and future generations by implementing the principles of circular economy (CE). This requires a fundamental shift from the traditional linear economy approach to a sustainable, circular economy strategy. At its essence, BM encapsulates four crucial aspects – energy, ergonomics, water, and circularity and integrates these four aspects into integrative mine planning, defining clear goals and objectives from the ‘blueprint’ of a mine towards a beneficial post-mining activity. Its implementation can lead to maximisation of resources beyond the life of the extractive mine and sustainable use of materials by integrating the principles of circular economy and multiuse mine, see Figure 1. These concepts complement and recognise the need to minimise environmental and social impacts while advancing economic development. Finally, this contribution explains the requirements and challenges of moving from linear to dynamic planning approaches under the BM concept. This way, BM stands as an approach that can contribute to the mining industry receiving necessary approvals and support from society leading to a long-term transformation of the industry’s image.

The Teutonic Bore deposit lies in a major greenstone belt within the Archaean Yilgarn craton of Western Australia. It occurs towards the base of a suite of tholeiitic basalts, some 100 m above a felsic volcanic pile of rhyolitic composition. Sediments comprise a minor, albeit important, percentage of the mine stratigraphy.The deposit consists of a single, steeply dipping lens of massive sulphides totalling 1.4 million tonnes grading 4.16 per cent Cu, 16.4 per cent Zn, 1.22 per cent Pb and 203 g/t Ag. In addition, cross cutting "stringer" mineralisation in the footwall contributes a further 0.75 million tonnes at 2.38 per cent Cu, 1.92 per cent Zn and 52 g/t Ag to the mining reserves. Principal primary sulphides in massive and disseminated mineralisation are sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena, while minor amounts of arsenopyrite and argentiferous tetrahedrite are also present. Weathering has affected the primary mineralogy down to at least 90 m, resulting in a strongly leached oxide profile to about 85 m, overlying a thin, erratic zone of chalcocite supergene enrichment.Lateral metal zoning is marked both in massive sulphide and stringer mineralisation, with Cu/Zn ratios decreasing away from the centre of the orebody. Alteration is well developed in association with footwall stringer mineralisation, changing from a central Fe-Mg carbonate, chlorite and silica alteration zone below the massive sulphides to an outer halo of sericitisation. The spatial distribution of these minerals is patchy. Geochemically, the footwall alteration zone is characterised by central Cao, Na20 and Sr depletion (with less regular enrichment of SiO2 , Fe and MgO), surrounded by a peripheral zone of K20 enrichment.Evidence supports a classic volcanic-exhalative origin, involving submarine discharge on the flanks of a rhyolitic dome and accumulation of the massive sulphides in a local palaeotopographic depression. The sulphides overlie their feeder zone as shown by alteration and stringer mineralisation. Tholeiitic wallrocks are thought to be genetically unrelated to the mineralising solutions, although their presence as a cap over the felsic volcanics may have permitted the build up of a circulating metalliferous brine system prior to sulphide deposition.

For a number of years, Alcoa World Alumina Australia (Alcoa) has been investigating opportunities to produce economically viable products from bauxite residues. Three of these potential products are described here, being Red Sand, ALKALOAM« and REDLIMETM.Red Sand has a nominal particle size of +100 micron and is physically little different to crushed bauxite from which it is derived. In AlcoaÆs Western Australian refineries, Red Sand constitutes up to half of the residue going to impoundment areas. Initial testing indicates that this sand could be processed to provide an acceptable general landfill material, a construction back fill or a material suitable for road base construction. ALKALOAM« is the fine-grained residue often referred to as red mud. A great deal of work has been done to show the benefits of adding this material to sandy soils, which are common in coastal regions of WA. ALKALOAM« has properties that can elevate the pH of the acidic soils and also retain phosphorous, reducing overall fertiliser use and protecting sensitive waterways. REDLIMETM is a by-product of the refining process. This material has a high acid neutralising value. REDLIMETM could be more effective at pH control than most available products because of the fine particle size and sodium carbonate that remains with the product.

The Wonthaggi coalfield is in South Gippsland, about 90 miles southeast of Melbourne. It is situated on the down-faulted block of the South Gippsland highlands that lies south of the Kongwak fault, between the Powlett River and the sea (Fig. 1). The coal, which is of Jurassic age, occurs in two small, and intensely faulted, limnic basins, that lie on either side of a concealed ridge of Silurian sediments. The coal was first found as thin seams outc1'opping in the cliffs at Cape Paterson, but the seams that are worked at Wonthaggi are concealed beneath a veneer of Cainozoic sands that covers the Jurassic strata, and were found by boring.The c9al seams are worked by the State Coal Mine, which was opened in 1909 to ensure a supply of coal for the Victorian railways, following a prolonged strike in the Newcastle field of New South Wales. The total production from 1910 to June, 1943, amounts to 13,918,800 long tons of coal. The coal seams are faulted to a degree unknown in most coal...

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Ertsberg mining district is a 100 km2 area in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. The district hosts mineralised and barren, outcropping and hidden porphyry and equigranular intrusions. There are at least six major (100+ m wide) porphyry intrusions identified from surface and underground mapping and drill cores. These are the Grasberg Igneous Complex (GIC), Karume porphyry, Lembah Tembaga porphyry, Ertsberg Stockwork Zone porphyry, Kay intrusion and the Wanagon intrusion. Recent deep drilling adjacent to the GIC identified a new hidden porphyry at depth, the Gajah Tidur (Sleeping Elephant), which extends south-west beneath the Kucing Liar skarn. Other named small porphyry dykes and plugs in the district include the West Grasberg, North Grasberg, Idenberg, South East and Zaagkam intrusions. The largest equigranular intrusion is the multiphase Ertsberg diorite.Igneous activities occurred in a relatively short span (<1 million years) from about 3.4 Ma to 2.7 Ma ago, based on U-Pb zircon dating. The various intrusions in the district related to ore mineralisation are high K and appear to have been derived from the same parental chamber, based on similar whole rock rare earth element patterns. Radiogenic Nd- and Sr-isotopic variations indicate that there were multiple recharge events into the parental chamber.The larger intrusions and all economic mineralisation occur in a 4 km wide zone that parallels the N60W-trending axis of the Yellow Valley Syncline (YVS), one of the large folds generated during collisional tectonism. Intrusion pathways at ~3 Ma were localised into dilatational areas in a late and/or post-collisional NW-trending, left-lateral strike-slip zone with Riedel shear offsets between the major fault zones. The recovery of Copper by solvent extraction was arguably the most significant hydrometallurgical development of the 1960's. However, only dilute solutions at relatively high ph. could be treated effectively. ICVAcorga introduced in the 1970's the much stronger salicylaldoxime based reagents, which resulted in a dramatic change in plant configurations. So for example plants which normally use 3 extraction stages and 3 stripping stages could be reduced to 2 + 2 staging or 2 + 1 staging, even for high copper tenors at low ph. Leach liquors up to 40 g A copper are being treated at some locations so that almost any copper bearing liquor can now be purified by solvent extraction. Following a considerable amount of research and development effort ICI/Acorga have made further significant advances in the application of copper solvent extraction. The first of these is in computerised flowsheeting. In conjunction with ICI's Process Technology Department, Acorga have developed the Minchem Computer program, which uses laboratory generated equilibrium data to facilitate optimisation of metallurgical operating parameters. The program can operate in two modes, prediction and assessment so that given suitable extract and strip isotherms plant performance can be predicted for a given set of conditions. Alternatively existing plant performance can be assessed rapidly and accurately, thus providing a valuable quality control tool. Pilot plant work can now be restricted to evaluation of the physical aspects of the SX circuits, and to looking for the unexpected. Secondly using the patented 5-Nonyl Salicylaldoxime in precise admixture with a number of carefully selected strip modifiers, the Acorga M-range has resulted. Reagent selection from these new extractants can now be based on how the reagent can alleviate the remaining problems such as hydrolytic stability, transfer of iron, and organic losses by entrainment which may be related to particular features of the operating plant. Thus the Acorga M-range has enhanced and significantly extended the use of solvent extraction for copper, whilst refinements in the processing of metallurgical data has considerably simplified circuit design and analysis of results.

A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as zone C, is a mine recoverable 432,000 t at 18.1 g/t Au & 46 g/t Ag. Mining will be by a combination of open pit and underground at a rate of 100,000 t per annum. Processing will be by SAG mill, gravity circuit and CIL plant. A diatreme breccia, localised at an intersection of structures and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are indicative of a strong porphyry association. Typical epithermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineralisation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100 in strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralizing fluids were sourced from a diatreme margin and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are interpreted to be derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split, which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource, and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting.

This report outlines the experience of Australian mining operators in dealing with large falls of roof in advance of longwall supports. Previous and present techniques used for face stabilisation have been described, together with an analysis of [actors which contributed to the roof falls, in each case. Attention has been focused on the stabilisation technique used at Angus Place Colliery, where the face coal was successfully reinforced by injecting chemical foam into Lite fractured areas. Although considered to be one of the worst roof falls in the history of Australian longwalls (60 m in length and up to 10 in in height), it was subsequently possible to resume cutting in Longwall 9 two weeks after the foam injection. A preliminary schedule of work involving the 'strata replacement' method, is also discussed. It has been based substantially on experience gained with cementitious supports, principally by ACIRL and Monier Resources.

The copper ore reserves at the Chuquicamata mine were re-estimated during March to June 1994, as part of a comprehensive audit of the mine's overall short- and long-term planning. The basic principles essential to all ore reserve estimates were implemented viz: 1. A detailed study of the geology, in this case particularly of the orientations of structural features of copper mineralisation and the subdivision of the orebody into geologically homogeneous sections, 2. the use of both drillhole and blasthole data sets, 3. statistical and geostatistical analyses of both data sets to model anisotropic spatial structures for all the geologically homogeneous sections, 4. block kriging using both data sets individually; and 5. a comprehensive validation of the block valuations to confirm the absence of global and conditional biases and to quantify the actual improvement achieved in the overall quality of the estimates compared to those executed on earlier techniques.

In a country richly endowed in mineral wealth, Climax Arintco Mining Corporation's ICAMC) Dinkidi porphyry Au-Cu deposit in Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines, represents the most significant mineral discovery in this country in recent times. The deposit is located within a belt of young intrusive and volcanic rocks in the Sierra Madre mountain chain of north Luzon, a region previously unassociated with porphyry -style mineralisation.Since 1989, drilling of the Dinkidi deposit has outlined a resource of 124 million tonnes of 1.0 g/t gold and 0.4 per cent copper. Regional exploration throughout CAMC's 37 000 hectare FTAA has identified a further 16 potential porphyry-related deposits.

The engineering properties of soils and tailings often exhibit significant anisotropy. One area where this has been well documents is undrained shear strength. Materials sheared in directions close to the principal stress direction in situ, i.e. triaxial compression, typically exhibit higher undrained strengths than those sheared in other directions such as simple shear. Importantly, along the most common critical failure surfaces relevant to tailings stability, whether primarily through tailings or a critical foundation layer, saturated materials are generally much closer to the simple shear loading direction than triaxial compression. Therefore, testing undrained shear strength of tailings or foundation soils in triaxial compression is likely to result in overestimation of the relevant strengths for design. Although these issues have repeatedly documented in the geotechnical literature for over three decades, they are not appreciated sufficiently across our industry. In an attempt to address and highlight these issues, a review is carried out of historical reference to the importance of simple shear loading. Attention is then drawn to the techniques applied in three recent post-failure investigations, where simple shear testing was applied. Finally, some relevant laboratory test results from a recent project in which the author was involved are outlined.CITATION:Reid, D, 2018. The lignites of Otago and Southland offer a potentially viable future feedstock for electricity production and possible conversion to petrochemicals or liquid fuels. The deposits, when combined, represent New ZealandÆs largest energy inventory; equivalent to about 74 000 petajoules û or approximately 35 times current natural gas reserves. Too often dismissed as irrelevant to New ZealandÆs energy future because of adverse perceptions of the value of low rank coals, the strategic value of this resource is in fact huge.   Investigations of the lignites extend back over more than 50 years (LFTB various, CRL Energy Ltd). Whilst it is not the intention of this paper to review this work, these investigations have confirmed the suitability of the resource as a feedstock for thermochemical conversion. Current estimates of South Island lignite mining costs are NZ$1.0 - 3.0/GJ (Natusch 2005), making these resources amongst the most competitively-priced energy sources available world-wide.   This value, however, will only be captured if we as a country begin to envisage a world-scale, long-life, integrated and multi-faceted development sized to supply world markets for chemicals or fuels. Recent CAE studies (Hooper and Riddolls, 2005) have emphasised the vital importance of ensuring that any exploitation of this resource maximises their value to New Zealand. The question that thus must be applied is how might large-scale utilisation of the resource fit with New ZealandÆs primary energy supply, and its potential for the export of high-value commodities.   From the broader perspective of New ZealandÆs total energy supply equation we need to examine other supply options beyond just the generation of electricity. We face in this country a situation wherein almost all our liquid fuels feedstock has to be imported with projections for an increasing dependence on imported oil. In addition NZ has a natural gas reserves-to-production ratio of less than ten years, and dwindling supply from local production. Without further natural gas discoveries, New Zealand has only a window of approximately five years before we will need to commit to imported LNG or some other thermal fuels option.   In other words, New Zealand is facing an uncertain future unless we can restore energy inventories to cover an adequate strategic reserve capacity as well as enable long-term investment in alternative sources. Within this context the South Island lignite resources are thus deserving of more attention. The extent of the resource is well known, its suitability for conversion reasonably assessed, and its magnitude such that there is little doubt that lignite conversion could adequately meet NZÆs future energy needs for many years out.   This paper reviews coal gasification technology, its application to lignite and the possibilities for future development of the lignite resources. It is argued that the strategic imperative for this country is to secure the lignite resources as a primary energy source for this country well into the latter half of this century.

Commencing in 1956, Rio TInto Australian Exploration Pty Limited in association with Electrolytic Zinc Co of Australasia, Limited, has been carrying out a mineral prospecting program in North-West Tasmania over an area of about 4000 square miles.The program has comprised extensive airborne geophysical surveys, detailed geological mapping, ground geophysical and geochemical investigations. Out of the wealth of new data, and the examination of previous records, has emerged a new structural concept of regional ore control and distribution in North-West Tasmania. This roncept stems from the discovery of an ancient 'fossil' rift valley (graben), named the Owen Rift Valley, along which are located the major mines of the area and numerous well-known prospects. The known mines and prospects from north to south include Mt Bischoff (tin); the Pinnacles (zinc, lead, ropper); the Chester (pyrites); Rosebery-Hercules (lead, zinc, ropper, silver, gold); Mt Tyndall (lead, ropper, zinc); Comstock and Tasman (copper, lead, zinc); Mt Lyell (copper, pyrites, gold); Mt Jukes and Mt Darwin (ropper). The identification of the West Coast (Owen Conglomerate) Range as a fossil rift valley is due to Or B Campana, who carried out extensive geological mapping and interpretation work, and who, with S B Dickinson, are the senior authors of this paper.S B Dickinson, who introduced B Campana to the geological problems of West Tasmania, had previously investigated the Mt Lyell and Rosebery mining fIeld, to which reference is made in this work.D King assisted in the regional mapping and in providing numerous data on the mineral distribution of the area.R S Matheson rontributed to the fmdings on ore emplacement and rontrol in the discussions held on this subject. Technological advances associated with the expanded application of paste technology in underground mine backfilling are now stimulating an interest in the disposal of process tailings as paste in the surface environment. Concurrent with the development of alternative surface tailings disposal practices is the requirement to fully understand the consolidation behaviour of tailings in paste form, and to relate this understanding to the significant body of data and operating experience from decades of study of the performance of hydraulically placed tailings. One effective method for demonstrating the benefits derived from handling and placement of tailings as paste is to review tailings slurry consolidation theory from the perspective of the changes which take place in the material as it makes its transition from a loose slurry to a dense, stable deposit resulting from managed thin-layer deposition. For a typical process tailings, an example is provided which illustrates the effect which mechanical dewatering has in accelerating the consolidation process and thereby providing a range of benefits from the perspective of surface disposal. Increased rates of filling (rise), expanded use of upstream embankment construction methods and elimination of impounded surface solutions are some quantifiable benefits which can be assembled on a site-specific basis to allow for valid comparisons with more traditional approaches to tailings disposal.

This paper proposes a set of new approaches for the optimisation of planning and designs in mines by means of evolutionary algorithms, which include the determination of ore grade, layout of development system, selection of mining methods and production scheduling in underground mines. The applications indicate that evolutionary algorithms are particularly suitable to the complex and complicated problems in mines.

In 1997, the Australian coal industry through Standards Australia committee MN-001 Coal and Coke recognised the need to produce a Standard giving some instruction on how to inspect and audit mechanical sampling systems. A Guide was developed by sampling subcommittee MN-001-04 and in 1999 the Standard was released as AS4264.5 æGuide to the Inspection of mechanical sampling systemsÆ Coal and Coke. Since that time the author has assisted with other committees in developing the Guide for other commodities such as concentrates and a generic standard for particulate materials. (AS4433.6 released 2000). The Coal and Coke guide is also currently a work item for ISO Standards. This paper is focused primarily on auditing and inspection procedures for coal mechanical sampling systems. It highlights the need for at least a three level inspection protocol where the operators manning the system maintain operational checks, the operators are regularly supervised by the company managing the system and once per year an independent auditor inspects the whole system to ensure compliance with design and standards. It does not cover short- and long-term maintenance of individual systems. With companies already certified to the ISO9000 series, this guide forms the framework to bring the operation and inspection of their mechanical sampling systems into line with these principles.

Correct sampling practices are of vital importance to the mining industry; key decisions for the business are made on the basis of samples in all the value chain. Geology plays a relevant role in pre- and post-investment stages. Actually the understanding of natural variability is essential for geological modelling, geometallurgical modelling, mine planning, grade and process control. Improper sampling practices obstruct this objective introducing irrelevant variability components, which can cause monumental economic losses. A good approach to accomplish this understanding is the application of heterogeneity and IngamellsÆs tests, which are useful tools to quantify the variability of a certain well-delimited geological unit at different comminution scales. The application of heterogeneity test can help minimise Pierre GyÆs fundamental sampling error and to study the impact of other sampling errors. IngamellÆs test allows us to define the correct mass of sample for chemical analysis. This paper presents the results of several heterogeneity and IngamellsÆs tests done in Chilean porphyry copper deposits that belong to CODELCO Chile (Chuquicamata, Mina Sur, Radomiro Tomic, El Salvador, Andina and Teniente), in different geological units (endogenous oxides, exotic oxides, supergene sulfides and hypogene sulfides) and for several elements (Cut, Cus, Mo and As). These tests, considering the natural variability, have helped us develop accurate sampling protocols to minimise the fundamental error to acceptable levels. A major contribution of these tests (more than 30) is the generation of secure sampling protocols using the highest sampling constant obtained in the tests, for new porphyry copper deposits that donÆt have information given by heterogeneity and IngamellsÆs tests.

North American steelmaking practices have evolved based on access to iron ore raw materials containing very low phosphorus contents, typically less than 0.025 per cent P. Cleveland-Cliffs managed Tilden iron ore operation produces iron ore pellets exceeding 0.030 per cent P, which by global standards would be considered low phosphorus, but has limited penetration in the North American iron ore market due to phosphorus content. Recently cathodoluminescence microscopy has augmented more standard ore characterisation techniques enhancing our understanding of the genetic history and process mineralogy of TildenÆs complex martite ore. This paper highlights the unique capabilities that cathodoluminescence microscopy provides for phosphorus mineral identification in fine-grained iron ores.

"In-seam drilling has been undertaken for the past 30 years for gas drainage to reduce the risk ofoutburst and lower the concentrations of seam gas in the underground ventilation. The drillingpractices have reflected the standards of the times and have evolved with the development oftechnology and equipment and the needs to provide a safe environment underground. Earlypractice was to adapt equipment from other fields, but with changing emphasis, research anddevelopment by the coal industry has created specifi c equipment, technology and practices toaccurately place in-seam boreholes to provide efficient and effective gas drainage."
