Deep paste thickeners have been proven capable of consistently producing medium to low slump material for disposal without the need for filters. However, proper design of the entire system is critical for a paste project to he successful. Some of the factors that must be carefully considered in design of a paste system include thickener sizing, tailings inipoundineni design, underflow pumping, and control system.

Almost all the countries of the south-west Pacific and the Australian states have recently completed or have commissioned mineral royalty reviews. The prime reasons for this widespread and consistent action is the desire of the governments of these entities to redress perceived effi- ciency and equity imbalances and to ensure that the revenue raising motive does not override the necessity to maintain mineral exploration and development incentives. Governments are tending to adopt royalty systems comprising a com- bination of base royalty and a profit component. Resource rent royalty and royalty holidays have been introduced and anomalies, such as royalty free gold production, still exist but appear to have uncertain futures. Tasmania ranks as the Australian state with the lowest aggregate royalty levy/production value ratio whilst Papua New Guinea has the highest royalty objective achievement level in the south-west Pacific region.

On Monday, October 25th, 1971 at approximately 12.15 a.m. the night shift proceeding underground discovered smoke at No.1 and No-3 cut throughs on the eastern side of the belt heading and in close proximity to the upcast shaft. Attempts to control the fire continued throughout the morning; as the position underground altered various procedures were adopted in an effort to contain and control the fire. Despite these efforts at approx. 12.40 p.m. a sudden change occurred which made it necessary to withdraw all workmen from underground, the vicinity of the Tunnel entrances and upcast shaft. Sealing of the mine at the entrances was the only remaining alternative. Several boreholes were put down to enable sampling of the atmosphere and air temperatures to be taken. This was essential as a guide to determining when conditions were suitable to allow exploration of the area using mine rescue self contained breathing apparatus.

"Mine waste rock management involving waste rock movement and placement, is a critical aspect in the planning of open pit mining operations, as the waste rock haulage cost can be the largest portion of the mine operating cost. The concept of sustainable development in the mining industry also encourages environmentally friendly waste dumps that have zero hazards to people and the surrounding environment. Therefore, a detailed waste management schedule must satisfy economic and environmental considerations. However, the available tools in the market cannot provide optimal waste dumping schedules to meet all these constraints. This paper introduces a user-friendly and automatic tool to optimise the waste dumping schedule, which minimises the haulage cost, and covers the encapsulation of reactive materials to minimise acid mine drainage problems. This tool has been developed by using a new mixed integer programming (MIP) mathematical model that considers both single-lift and multilift dumping scenarios. The application of the proposed tool on a data set collected from a gold mine shows that the multilift dumping scenario has provided a more flexible and economical waste dumping schedule than the single-lift scenario, and both scenarios satisfy environmental requirements.Citation:Fu, Z, Topal, E and Erten, O, 2016. The paper provides an overview of the development and content of APCOM symposia since their inception in 1961. This development is set within the context of the academic environment in which much of the research published at APCOM symposia is conducted. This environment includes rigorous external assessment of research quality at national levels and against international benchmarks, which carries significant consequences for funding and for the continued existence of the academic minerals industry disciplines. Adverse consequences that undermine the academic provision of mining and resource engineering will impact negatively on the minerals industry by reducing the level of research and education resources available to it.The traditional reductionist approach to research is contrasted with the inter-disciplinary approach that is required to address the complex systems problems that the minerals industry will have to address to ensure its technical, economical and environmental sustainability. Such an approach offers a means of raising research profiles, of establishing mutually beneficial academic-industry engagement and provides an opportunity for APCOM to take a lead role in identifying the research and development agenda for the future

The lunar subsurface, particularly the lava tubes formed by ancient volcanic activity, presents a promising environment for establishing safe and sustainable human habitats on the Moon. Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), widely used for excavating tunnels on Earth, offer a potential solution for developing these subsurface spaces. However, the unique lunar conditions, including extreme temperatures, high vacuum, radiation, and the extraordinary strength and abrasiveness of lunar rocks, necessitate significant adaptations to existing TBM technology. This study investigates the feasibility of utilising TBMs for lunar subsurface exploration and base construction, addressing the challenges posed by the harsh lunar environment. We review previous conceptual designs for lunar TBMs, highlighting their strengths and limitations in addressing these challenges. Additionally, we explore innovative excavation methods, such as microwave-assisted rock weakening and undercutting techniques, to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of lunar TBM operations. By evaluating the geological characteristics of the lunar crust and analysing the potential of lava tubes as launching points for TBM operations, this study provides a comprehensive assessment of the technical requirements and operational considerations for lunar TBM implementation. The findings of this research contribute to the growing body of knowledge on lunar base development and pave the way for future human exploration and utilisation of the Moon’s subsurface resources.

Backfil ling of excavated Sub Level Open Stopes has been underway since March 1989 and as at December 1992 some 1 100 000 cubic metres of Cemented Aggregate Fill have been placed. During these three years significant developments in fill quantities, types and cost have taken place.Operational improvements have reduced the quantity of Cement Aggregate Fill by 40 per cent. These results have been achieved by:ò rescheduling stopes,ò designing smaller primary stope, and ò use of uncemented rockfill.Unit cost for Cement Aggregate Fill have fallen in the order of 50 per cent through:improving fill hole reli ability,simplified barricade construction procedures, reducing the cement content,ò substituting dune sand for deslimed mill tailings, ò improved maintenance at the Backfill plant, and ò renegotiated site freight agreement.This paper will review the historical developments of backfill use at Olympic Dam.

The ores described in this paper are from the two principal orebodies at Wiseman's Creek, a small village about 22 miles south-east of Bathurst in central-western New South Wales.The first official reference to mining at Wiseman's Creek is in "Mineral Statistics of New South Wales" of 1875, which reported that the Wiseman's Creek Copper Mining Company had proved a lode-later known as "North Wiseman's"-to a depth of 120 ft., where it was found to be 20 ft. wide. By 1876 the erection of a mill and smelting works had commenced, and the sulphide ore found to contain copper lead, zinc, silver and gold. Some oxidised ore was also being worked. Operations were, however, generally unsuccessful, and sporadic work up until 1907 produced only about 5,000 tons of ore. The other more important orebody of the locality-the Phoenix-was not opened until about 1895. By 1908, as reported by J. E. Carne, the shaft had been sunk 340 ft., with the extraction of both oxidised and primary ore. At the time of the slump in copper, pric'es in 1907 approximately 3,000 tons of, ore had been produced.Several smaller orebodies were discovered and worked during the same period as the North Wiseman's and Phoenix, but their output was more or less insignficant. THE OREBODIES AND THEIR GEOLOGICAL SETTINGIt is now impossible to examine the orebodies underground, but they appear to have formed a series of flat lenses, whose major axes were parallel to ,the foliation of the enclosing quartz-chlorite-muscovite schists. The largest ,of these lenses was worked as the North Wiseman's orebody, which was reported by Carne to vary in width from 1 ft. to 20 ft., and which probably extended discontinuously over a strike length of about 1,000 ft. The Phoenix orebody is stated to have varied from 1 ft. 6 in. to 3 ft. in width...

The surface waters in regions with acid sulfate soils (ASS) can contain high concentrations of acidity and dissolved metals. These soils cause problems for agriculture, construction and development. The water can be neutralised through many techniques, however a technique that is low in maintenance and low in cost is most desirable. Due to the vast spread of ASS along AustraliaÆs coastline an expensive and high maintenance solution would not be cost-effective. In this study, a passive treatment system that has been used to neutralise acid rock drainage has been applied to treat ASS water. This system is commonly referred to as an oxic limestone drain (OLD) or an anoxic limestone drain (ALD) depending on the waters dissolved oxygen concentration. The system that has been developed for ASS has a similar closed system to the OLD or ALD, that traps the carbon dioxide which forms when limestone reacts with acidic water. It has been called a closed tank reactor (CTR) and is constructed by placing limestone into an airtight tank. A common problem that will occur when acidic water with a high concentration of dissolved metals reacts with limestone is the formation of metal oxy-hydroxide precipitates. These precipitates can coat or armour the limestone and reduce its reactivity. To minimise the accumulation of precipitates in the CTR, perforated subdrains have been installed. It is anticipated that high water pressure and flow through the subdrains will remove some precipitates. A sump has also been installed at the base of the tank to collect precipitates that settle under gravity. The CTR has been tested for 70 days at a sugar cane farm located at McLeods Creek, NSW. Within this time the sump and subdrains have been used to flush the system. An orange solution was produced during flushing and it is believed to contain iron and aluminium precipitates. The initial performance of the CTR raised pH by at least one unit. Almost all dissolved aluminium was removed and more than half the dissolved iron. The total titratable acidity ranged from 17 - 92 mg/L CaCO3 in the initial month of monitoring. After passing through the CTR the acidity was reduced to zero. The performance of the CTR during the last few days of monitoring decreased. This is believed to be due to a pulse of water with higher acidity and dissolved metal content that lasted a week. In this pulse, the acidity reached 307 mg/L CaCO3 and the total dissolved aluminium reached a maximum of 24 mg/L. Higher concentrations of dissolved metals may have been the cause for lower performance due to increased precipitation and coating on the limestone.

Byproduct coking is practised in three of the major Australian ironmaking centres, the Newcastle and Whyalla works of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. and the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd. Coking first commenced at Newcastle in 1915 and at Port Kembla in 1938. The installations established at these centres include coal cleaning facilities and com- plete byproduct streams. The Whyalla plant, because of its location is somewhat less extensive, having no coal cleaning plant and a comparatively restricted byproduct section. As new batteries have been built every opportunity has been taken to incorporate modern design features and improved operat- ing techniques. This has included the provision of equipment to reduce atmospheric and water pollution. A marked reduction of markets for byproducts has had serious repercussions on the profitability of this section of the Industry.

The efficient design of carbon-in-pulp (C.I.P.) plants involves the integration of both process engineering and design engineering.Many recently constructed plants have not recognised the above interrelationship, and as such have incurred higher capital and operating costs than were in reality necessary. This has been compounded in some cases by slavishly following the design of plants where process conditions are different for the ore characteristics in question, thus perpetuating design errors that finally become industry "accepted practice".In the paper that is to be presented the unit operations of crushing, grinding, classification, leaching, adsorption, desorption and electrowinning in C.I.P. plants will be discussed with reference to the integration of process and design engineering.

Golden Pig mine is in the central part of the Southern Cross greenstone belt within the Archaean Yilgarn craton. The mine has produced approximately 2.5 Mt of ore at 5.7 g/t Au to yield approximately 450 000 oz. The majority of gold mineralisation is hosted within extensively deformed and quartz-veined BIFÆs. In addition to the BIF-hosted mineralisation, an increasingly important part of the resource lies in the Taurus Lode, which is a N-NNW-trending amphibolite facies shear zone. The Taurus Lode lies within a continuous shear-zone that has a moderate to steeply WSW dipping foliation, and a mineral lineation of biotite, amphibole and pyrrhotite plunging consistently 10¦ S. Drive faces, subperpendicular to the foliation and lineation, consistently show evidence for syn-mineralisation reverse shear. Exposures parallel to the mineral lineation and perpendicular to the foliation reveal both sinistral and dextral asymmetries. These characteristics suggest that the vorticity axis of the Taurus Shear Zone is parallel to the mineral lineation, and that the simple shear sense is reverse. This geometry can arise when there is a major component of flattening across the shear zone, which may be due to interference between two adjacent granite domes. The BIF-hosted lodes plunge consistently 15¦ NNW coincident with the intersection of the axial planar cleavage of the regional folds and the Taurus Shear Zone. However, where the penetrative shear characteristics control the orientation and geometry of the mineralisation, oreshoots plunge SSW, parallel to the stretching and mineral lineations within the shear. The SSW plunge of strike extensive and laterally confined high-grade, economic ore shoots within the Taurus shear is fundamental to defining the economic mineralisation within this lode. Identifying the zones of maximum continuity and establishing the optimal position for future development will maximise ore extraction.

Answers to many questions arising in the different phases of exploration, estimation and production of a mineral deposit, can be found in the geostatistical theory of G. Matheron. It is shown that all these questions regarding sample size, number of samples, shape of drilling pattern can be answered as soon as the continuity of the mineralization is quantitatively characterized by means of a variogram. Next a formula which gives the variance of the error associated to any estimation procedure (i.e., any method and any sampling pattern) is given. Applications to the computation of the standard error of the'mean for various sampling patterns are shown, as well as how to use the formula to simulate several possible sampling strategies and choose the best one. Altogether it is shown how to answer the often heard question, "what happens if such and such sampling procedure is used?", rather than giving an hypothetical "optimal" solution.

In mining and remote areas of resource industry, there has been a development towards lacking emergency medical first aid response, that creates a potential disadvantage for patients after work accidents and other medical emergencies compared to standard population. This raises the question how a professional emergency medical coverage can be provided underground, taking into account lacking medical professionals in small resource companies combined with long rescue times. Aiming on the closure of this gap, a team of the mine rescue brigade from the Research and Training Mine Reiche Zeche (Forschungs-und Lehrbergwerk (FLB) Reiche Zeche) of the TUBAF Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg in Freiberg/Germany and its cooperating emergency departments of the Freiberg District Hospital and the Zeisigwaldkliniken Bethanien Chemnitz developed a totally new rescue concept using elements from tactical medicine and advanced emergency medicine combined with a specifically designed compact equipment and a highly standardised teaching curriculum. A fully new standardised and condensed tactical medical approach was developed including specifically adjusted equipment, and was taught in a didactically optimised way within 16 lessons in two days. Objective Structured Practical Examinations (OSPE) using manikins and simulated patients were conducted and compared to the identical exam of the reference group, which consisted of advanced paramedics. The standardised tactical medical scheme includes vital functions and body checks, advanced life support, nasal and intraosseous drug application, supraglottic airway management, artificial ventilation, thoracocentesis, bleeding control including tourniquet, fracture repositioning and splinting, transport bedding and thermal preservation. The developed Tactical Medical Mining Rescue (TMR) concept was subsequently included in the German guidelines for mine rescue services in 2022 and is already implemented in many companies in Germany and several international projects.

Because of the problems with 1st and 2nd generations of Advanced High-Strength Steels (AHSS), a 3rd generation of AHSS steels has become prominent and these steels have properties in between the 1st and 2nd generations of AHSS. However, although the 3rd generation of AHSS is a promising candidate as a replacement for its predecessors, there remain some challenges in processing these steels which are essentially medium Mn (Mn content ~ 5–7 wt per cent) and high Al (Al content ~ 1– 3 wt per cent) steels. The use of conventional casting powders based on the CaO-SiO2 system is unsuitable for high and medium Mn/Al steels. This work investigates the development of CaO-Al2O3- based mold fluxes for casting third-generation AHSS steel. Mold fluxes, with otherwise similar compositions but different C/A ratios, are tested and their crystallisation behaviour is examined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A calcium aluminate phase having a composition Ca12Al14O33 was found to be the main crystalline phase in the mold fluxes. A decrease in crystallisation temperature was observed as the CaO/Al2O3 ratio increased from 1.00 to 1.33. The effective crystallisation rate constant exhibited an increase with decreasing crystallisation temperature, indicating a potential influence of nucleation rate on the overall crystallisation rate and suggesting an anti-Arrhenius behaviour in the crystallisation process of these mold fluxes.

During blasting body wave interaction with geometrical surfaces induces Rayleigh-waves which propagate along free surfaces, e.g. crack faces or delaminated rock layers. These Rayleigh-waves carry most of their energy within a very shallow surface layer and propagate with very little attenuation in real rock materials. Upon interaction with a crack front a very strong mixed mode stress intensity factor may result and lead to fracture initiation. On the basis of experimental photomechanical results the history of dynamic stress intensity factors Kt and K2 will be studied in Detail.

Western Mining Corporation, managing partner of the Windarra Nickel Project are in- stalling a raise-bored haulage shaft and under- ground crushing system at the Mt. Windarra Nickel Mine. The system will be the second of its type installed by W.M.C., the first being in- stalled at the Otter-Juan mine in Kambalda in 1976/77. Both haulage systems became necessary as a result of the increasing production limi- tations, and escalating costs of a deep decline mine. The Windarra haulage system required a single 3m diameter vertical raise drill hole to a depth of 470 metres. Two five tonne skips in balance will hoist crushed ore and mullock to the surface, at a design rate of 200 tonnes per hour, effectively reducing truck haulage leads by up to 50%. It is expected the project will be in full operation by mid 1982 and will enable the mine to achieve an annual production rate of 600,000 t.p.a. by 1983.

Mineral commodity prices are subject to volatility over both the short and longer run – driving fluctuating operating margins for mining companies over time. Such market dynamics influence mine operating decisions depending on the interplay of company-specific and mineral market factors. The company factors include corporate financial strength and price-risk management strategy, as well as mining practices and methods at the operation level. The critical mineral market factor is the price of the ex-mine product. This results from underlying microeconomic and macroeconomic root-causes pertaining to mineral supply and demand, in addition to the activities of financial participants within commodity markets.Significant changes in commodity prices of an extended duration, either up or down, remain the principal influence upon mine economics – and therefore on mining practices too. Accurate and precise forecasting of commodity prices (and of relevant exchange rates) continues to prove elusive both to mineral economists and market analysts. Thus, at any given point in time, there are often widely differing price forecasts available for both the relevant commodity and currency. Companies as a result are unclear how to respond in practical operating terms to such price-side uncertainty – other than to manage incremental capital and operating expenditure. Typical company – and industry financier – responses to the difficulty in predicting future mineral commodity prices are to take measures to manage uncertainties in mining project revenues and costs. These operating practices are prudent – yet come at an economic cost: that is, lost revenue and margin opportunity is inevitable in any such system not easily capable of responding to price volatility in the market. The mine of the future will seek to capture this lost economic opportunity. Three key areas of C.I.P. plant design, viz. leach- ing time, adsorption and the gold loading on the carbon, are discussed and illustrated with examples. The need for accurate pilot plant data for use in assessing and optimising design is emphasized. This approach should minimize capital and maximise return on capital. It is demonstrated that, as regards adsorption, economics favours short retention time, high gold loadings and mechanically agitated, draft tube reactors. INTRODUCTION Little attempt appears to have been made in Australia to design the present generation of C.I.P. plants to achieve an economic optimum. Most would, seem to have been based on pre- liminary leaching data, gold extraction and value and rule of thumb which, in general, has led to over design and over capitalisation. An essential step to effective economic design is a comprehensive pilot plant study to establish definitive operating parameters, yields and reagent costs.
