The matte-metal-equilibria in the system Pb-Cu-S have been studied at temperatures between 720 and 920¦C by direct sampling and D.T.A. methods. These results are compared with those of other workers. The applications of such data to a continuous copper drossing process, and to a number of other metallurgical processes are discussed.

Gas problems, largely instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas, arose in the early days of coal mining in Australia, leading to attempts at predrainage often including destressing. With deeper mining and new gassy areas being mined, gas problems have increased. This has led to more research, such as into coal-gas relationships, and more practical trials into seam gas drainage in both the Sydney and Bowen basins. Predrainage techniques have been devised to suit the special Australian geological conditions and to take into account the erratic occurrence of CO, (nearly 100 per cent in some cases) in the seam gas. Better mining methods and other improvements are continuing. The introduction of post-drainage has been simplified by the adaptation of long established overseas techniques and equipment.Utilisation of seam gases in Australia is complicated by the presence of CO, but even with pure CH. little has been done.Seam gas drainage has some disadvantages such as the need for, and the dangers of, complex and rigorously controlled plant. Also drained coal becomes harder and dustier.

Geochemical exploration continues to play a significant role in new mineral discoveries inAustralia and elsewhere, including terrains where mineralisation is buried or otherwise obscured by regolith cover of various types. Transported regolith commonly restricts the migration of trace elements to surface, especially in arid terrains, presenting a range of problems for traditional geochemical exploration methods that employ surface samples. Regions dominated by transported cover include the northern parts of the Tasmanides in eastern Australia and the Yilgarn Craton which are variably covered by thick alluvium and Mesozoic to Cainozoic sedimentary rocks (Anand and Paine, 2002). A comprehensive computer simulation has been developed for heap and dump leaching processes. It deals with complex chemical interactions, involving several minerals and reagents, which vary with time and location in the dump. The simulation is generally applic- able to ores of various metals extracted by different reagents. It requires only mineral- ogical data obtainable from drill cores and chemical data obtainable from the literature; there is no curve-fitting with adjustable parameters. Applications in designing testwork programmes, evaluating operating options, transferring experience to new situations and reducing uncertainty in long-term forecasts are described. Specific examples are included illustrating the potential of the simulation.

Since 1969, a substantial number of geophysical methods have been applied in the search for porphyry copper and mesothermal type -sulpha-de deposits. These have assisted with geological mapping as well as the definition of various sulphide depos-its. The application of these methods at the Frieda-Nena deposits, Papua New Guinea, can be used as a case study for exploration in other parts of New Guinea.In 1993, Highlands Gold Limited carried out an intensive geophysical program over the Nena deposit. The methods employed included, CSAMT (controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics), airborne and ground elect-romagnetics, IP/resistivity and ground magnetics. The magnetic method was used as a regional mapping tool as well as a way of mapping alteration zones over both the Nena and Frieda River copper deposits. Electromagnetics, in part-icular FLAIRTEM, is a rapid reconn-aissance tool as well as a detailed mapping tool for the location of Nena-style massive sulphide deposits. IP/ resistivity is an expensive but most useful tool for mapping out Frieda porphyry copper style disseminated sulphides as well as Nena style deposits. Developed and built in 1982 for simultaneous bathy-metric and reflectivity mapping of the deep ocean by the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics, SeaMARC II was a breakthrough in sea-floor mapping technology. The design was developed cooperatively by industry and academia, and the system has served as a prototype for a new generation of mapping tools for operation in both shallow and deep water.Research programs using the SeaMARC II system have focussed on basic research into the geophysical evo-lution of the Pacific, ranging from intra-atoll mapping to surveys of the deep-sea trenches. During the past few years most work has been concentrated on detailed investigations of the morphology of mid-ocean spread-ing centers, seamounts, and the subduction zones which surround the Pacific. The detail provided by the high resolution, 10-km wide side-scan sonar images of fault and fold structures, combined with the swath of bathy-metric information obtained simultaneously, allow previ-ously unattainable analysis of seafloor morphology and are leading to development of detailed models for ocean crust genesis and deformation.

Completing its historical role the opera tion of copper blast furnace of the Saganoseki Smelter was terminated in 1970, but it left some interesting data on metal lumps formed at the furnace bottom. Analysis disclosed the lumps to be speiss containing 100 to 10,000 g/t of Au and Ag and stratified to iron speiss and copper speiss. Solidifying temperatures of iron speiss and copper speiss being approximately 1,090¦C and 800¦C respectively, copper speiss precipitated at the lower side. The distribution coefficient of Au and Ag between matte and speiss (g/t Au(Ag) in matte / g/t Au(Ag) in speiss) is in the range of 1 x 10 2 to 2 x 10 ' and 1 x 10 1 to 5 respectively. The higher Cu % is in speiss, the-more An and Ag are distributed into speiss. Except for a few data, these results comfotm well to the range of distribution equilibria of Au and Ag in matte and speiss systems by Gerlach and Others.

Magnesium-rich olivine is used as an additive in LKABÆs iron ore pellets in order to improve the high-temperature properties of the finished products. Olivine is only added to the pellets that are manufactured for ironmaking in the blast furnace process. The olivine comes from Minelco/LKABÆs mine at Seqi in Greenland. This dunite complex of Archean age contains about 95 - 98 per cent olivine. The grain size is typically 1 - 3 mm but much larger euhedral olivine crystals are common in the porphyritic type. The serpentinisation is absent or weak. The most common minor minerals are chromite, chlorite, talc, phlogopite, amphibole and pyroxene. The crushed olivine is transported to LKABÆs pelletising plants in Northern Sweden. After grinding, small amounts of olivine are mixed with the magnetite concentrate. The concentrate is rolled into green balls, about 10 - 14 mm in diameter. The moist green balls are transferred into the pelletising machine where the maximum temperature is about 1250¦C. The residence time in the pelletising machine is about one hour. Olivine is used in order to get pellets with better high-temperature properties. This paper deals with the olivine alteration during the pelletising process and the behaviour of magnesium following the decomposition of magnetite. The reactions are quite complex in the pellets because the physico-chemical conditions vary considerably in the process from one process step to another, and in the pellet bed from the top to the bottom. Some olivine particles in the finished product show very slight alteration, some particles are completely decomposed. The formation of the iron-rich coronas around the olivine particles is the most typical alteration. In the finished pellets the magnesium is mainly distributed between the following phases: unaltered olivine, coronas, Mg/Fe-ferrite and silicate slag.

When the human eye fails in the evaluation of quality parameters in the extraction of minerals the use of laser-induced fluorescence analysis (LIF) can supply more detailed information on the composition of rocks. On the basis of measurements of selected raw materials engineering concepts for the use of this method in the mining industry as an innovative system for horizon control of mining machines will be described and the most important analysis parameters, influencing factors and interference variables are presented.

The Reward polymetallic massive sulphide deposit occurs 35 km south of Charters Towers, adjacent to the Highway gold deposit (Fig. 1). It is hosted within rhyolitic lavas and interlayered volcaniclastics of the Cambro-Ordovician Mt Windsor Volcanics. Reward is a "blind" deposit discovered in 1987 after a long history of exploration by various companies in the area. The main pyrite dominant massive sulphide body occurs under 100m combined thickness of Tertiary fluviatile sediments overlying deeply weathered gossanous volcanics. The exploration case-history provides a striking example of how geological and structural models can be built up almost exclusively from drill information. Four different styles and ages of mineralisation are present: 1) volcanogenic Cu+Pb+Zn+Ag+Au massive sulphides of probable syngenetic origin; 2) remobilised Cu+Au in massive pyrite of metamorphic/deformational origin; 3) supergene and 4) oxide Cu+Au mineralisation of weathering origin. The massive pyrite body, containing chalcopyrite lenses, transects the stratigraphy and is inferred to contain in excess of 5 million tonnes. Overlying the primary mineralisation a supergene chalcocite rich zone contains a measured/indicated resource of 634,231 tonnes of 6.77% Cu which includes 287,000 tonnes of 1.32 g/t Au and 18 g/t Ag. In addition a measured/inferred oxide resource of 309,000 tonnes of 5 g/t Au and 27 g/t Ag overlies the supergene zone.

Shay Gap was created for the sincrular purpose of housing, in comfort, the workforce that would be required to mine iron ore, from leases held by Goldsworthy Mining Limited, in hill country, approximately 170 kilometres east of Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. To combat the and environment, the Company ultimately decided to adopt a novel planning concept for the town, which had not been attempted before in Western Australia. The special problems encountered during planning, and the reservations that were expressed during construction and early settle ment, are now part of the dim past. During the three years of occupation now achieved, there has been accumulated a story of success in the provision of an acceptable alternative to modern suburbia. Not only may this be claimed, but it can also be argued that the Shay Gap concept has been a more successful solution to a real environmental problem in our arid Pilbara region than has been seen in other similar settlements.

The mining. operations of Bougainville Copper Pty Limited are located at Panguna on the Island of Bougainville which is part of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. Mineralisation in the Panguna area was first established by C.R.A. Exploration Pty Ltd in 1964. Exploration work since then has established ore reserves estimated to be 760,000,000 tons of.0.47% copper and 0.4 dwt./ton gold. An economic feasibility study completed in July of this year has enabled a decision to be made to proceed with a major mining operation. The ore will be mined by open cut methods and will be treated in a conventional concentrator with a nominal capacity of 90,000 short tons per day. The concentrate will be pumped as a slurry through a 15 mile long pipeline to a port established on the east coast where it will be filtered and dried ready for export. Other supporting facilities for the mine include two towns, a 135 megawatt steam power station, and access roads.

City Resources Limited selected Vanuatu as a target area for epithermal gold mineralization because of its relatively unexplored character and its location on the southwest Pacific rim. During 1985 a systematic program of reconnaissance prospecting was completed on six islands within the Vanuatu group, using a helicopter and a specially designed exploration support vessel with on-board assay laboratory. Within a period of 4 months, reconnaissance prospecting of all six islands was completed, two previously unknown epithermal gold provinces had been discovered, and six major prospects warranting detailed exploration had been identified. Factors which contributed to the success of the program include (i) a flexible management approach, (ii) the mobility and access provided by the support vessel/helicopter combination, (iii) rapid assay turn-around, and (iv) adherence to basic prospecting techniques. The relative merits of various sampling media are discussed.

This paper describes operational experience with seam gas and spontaneous combustion management, gained during ten years of production history (1993 to 2003) in the Wynn seam at Dartbrook Coal mine. In addition, comparisons are made with more recent operational experience in the overlying Kayuga seam. Development and retreat longwall operations were undertaken in a 4.0 m thick working section of the Wynn seam, contained within the lower quarter of a circa 24 m thick mega seam, from 1993 until mining operations were relocated to the overlying Kayuga seam in 2004. Production from the first block of the Kayuga seam is currently underway with seam gas and spontaneous combustion management requirements being refined as further operational experience is gained. Seam gas management techniques, including pre-drainage with pressurised fracturing, surface to underground goaf drainage of a carbon dioxide rich seam gas and novel, high capacity ventilation circuits, were employed in the Wynn seam. Ventilation strategies included operating up to carbon dioxide STEL concentrations of 3.0 per cent in segregated return airways rather than being limited to the TWA-TLV concentration of 1.25 per cent. The spontaneous combustion experience at Dartbrook Coal has, to some degree, resulted in a change in the way the risk is managed in Australian coal mines. Values of carbon monoxide make and hydrogen concentrations are profoundly different from previously recommended management plan trigger levels and those used elsewhere in the industry. However, the detection of higher hydrocarbons together with rising oxygen depletion ratios and absolute hydrogen concentrations remain as indicators of advancing spontaneous combustion events. In this respect, experience gained in the Wynn seam was important in the initial management of the shallower Kayuga seam, an essentially greenfield site with no prior operational experience being available.

Western Mining Corporation began shaft sinking operations at it's Foster orebody, south of Kambalda, on the 20th June, 1984. The top levels of the orebody are currently being mined via a decline some 1.5km away.Long term plans require the shaft and decline to combine and produce 400,000 tonnes of nickel ore per annum. Eventually all of the ore produced will be hauled up the shaft.The shaft is 4.5m in diameter and the target depth is 760m. Ground conditions to date suggest there will be no further need for concrete lining beyond the oxidised zone. As such, the sink is an open-shaft development in competent basalt rock. Shaft furniture will be installed on completion of the excavation to the target depth.This paper summarises the experience in the project to date, along with comparisons to conventional shaft sinking methods employed in previous years at Kambalda Nickel Operations.

Fragmentation modelling has been in use in the mining industry for a long time; however, there are still some aspects to tackle with regard to its use for strategic/planning and day-to-day purposes.On one hand, an important amount of resources are allocated to the task of calibrating and validating a good fragmentation model. Nonetheless, errors during the implementation stage introduce uncertainty into the prediction.On the other hand, it is common practice in the mining industry to use only discrete values to represent the fragmentation from blasting (k20, k50, k80), which provides a biased interpretation of the situation as, for instance, the best and worst possible cases are not taken into account. This is particularly critical when a continuous improvement philosophy has been adopted and modelling is used to either modify the drilling and blasting designs or plan ahead.It is well known that every site has particular conditions (rock mass, equipment, drilling and loading practices, among others) that often define unique trends in implementation. These trends can be captured using statistic and probabilistic techniques and then used as proxies for further analysis.This paper explores the potential of including implementation data in the form of probabilistic distributions into the Swebrec model to improve the performance of this engineering tool during the decision-making process.The fragmentation results of four designs were modelled using three different degrees of accuracy in the implementation for the burden, spacing and explosive column length.The data analysis showed that the probabilistic approach helps to achieve a broader perspective regarding the fragmentation that it is possible to obtain and the implications for the subsequent processes. The analysis also showed that the likelihood of producing similar fragmentation with different designs (involving different powder factors and costs associated) increases with the variability of the implementation.CITATION:Parra, H and Zenteno, D, 2015. The kinetics of the interfacial reaction of H2O on liquid silica-saturated iron silicates has been studied by means of measurement of the HDO-H2 isotope exchange reaction. The apparent first order rate constant, ka, was found to be inversely proportional to the H20/H2 ratio, consistent with two electron (melt to adsorbed/dissociating molecule) transfer mechanism and can be given by the expression In ka = -1.97 x 104/T + 1.57 - ln(pH2O/pH2), where the units for ka are mol cm -2 s-1 atm 1. The results of the current study are shown to be consistent with the indirect measurements of earlier work.

A low-grade disseminated nickel sulphide serpentinite ore from W.A. had a relatively high permeability after drying. Various techniques indicated that the permeability resided within a fine network of fibrous vein- lets and especially within coarse cracks along which the sulphides lay. The ore minerals were therefore open to selective extraction by chemical leaching. A IM ammonia-7.8 wt.o "ammonium carbonate" solution, oxygenated at 1 bar oxygen pressure and about 23¦C, released nickel, copper and cobalt from the sulphides, leaving a permeable residue of goethite, while calcium, magnesium and iron concentrations remained negligible in the leachant. The nickel and copper was electrodeposited directly from the pregnant liquor in a deposit which included 16.5 wt.% sulphur. Enhanced copper/ nickel ratios early in the extraction suggested that valleriite (not amenable to flotation) was leached preferentially. Th$ controlling influence of the pore structure was demonstrated by the dependence of leaching rates on the size of the ore particles used, and on the measured porosity of different ore samples. A 2mm size was probably the optimum for exposing sulphides to the leachant. Leaching was accelerated by increasing the temperature and oxygen pressure.
