A technology involving separate unit processes for the generation and use of ferric ions for the oxidation of sulphidic minerals has been developed. The technology utilises a stand-alone automated bioreactor for ferric-ion generation (termed SAAB-FIG) and produces a low pH, ferric ion-rich leach liquor with a high oxidation potential. This leach liquor is then employed, in a separate unit process, to oxidise sulphidic minerals and regenerate ferrous iron that may subsequently be recycled to the bioreactor for the continual generation of ferric ions. The technique was successfully applied for the recovery of copper from chalcocite (Cu2S) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), as well as other ores and concentrates containing copper sulphide minerals. Coarse ore, ground ore and concentrates were treated with acidic solutions containing 8 to 12 (g/L) Fe(III) ions at a variety of temperatures. This process yielded over 50 per cent of the contained copper from both chalcopyrite and chalcocite samples. Maximum reaction rates and copper recoveries were found to be highly dependent upon temperature and pH and leach liquors containing bacterial cells displayed little difference in their leaching efficiency when compared to cell-free leach liquors.

Various analysis techniques are used to determine the nature of a large seismic event that was triggered by a mass blast in an underground mine. This event was recorded by surface accelerometer arrays whose output was doubly integrated using a stable filter to determine the dynamic displacements. The peak dynamic displacements during the blast were 0.09 mm, and during its latter stages, this blast induced a seismic event having a peak dynamic displacement more than ten times larger at 1.26 mm. Polarisation analysis, based on the complex covariance matrix, showed that the seismic event was caused by movement of a known underground fault, close to the blast, which radiated most of its release motion as a shear-horizontal (SH) wave. The change in frequency content with time for the blast and seismic event was initially determined using the Fourier-based reassigned S-method. This analysis showed that the large amplitude seismic event had frequency content significantly lower than that of the blast. Nevertheless, this Fourier technique still retains the problems associated with short time windows as well as the fact that most realistic signals are non-stationary. In order to eliminate such influences, the more recently developed empirical mode decomposition (EMD) was used to obtain the intrinsic mode functions (IMF) of the seismic wave propagation. The EMD vibration analysis showed that each IMF generally exhibited distinct frequency changes throughout the blast and a significant reduction in frequency throughout the subsequent event. It is shown that most of the energy of the seismic event is contained in IMF modes 2, 3 and 4 of the SH wave; the high-frequency first mode (IMF1) contains little energy. Following a pre-feasibility study, Mount Isa Mines commenced a feasibility study on the deposit of the George Fisher Mine in May 1997. Board approval was granted in May 1998 to construct a 2.5 million tonne per annum mine and to upgrade existing concentrator and smelter facilities. The world-class George Fisher zinc-lead-silver deposit is located approximately 22 kilometres north of the city of Mount Isa, in north-west Queensland and is 2.6 kilometres north of the existing Hilton Mine. It will be a large-scale underground mine, sustaining a profitable zinc-lead-silver business in Mount Isa for at least ten years. This paper will outline the details of the mine that was developed during the feasibility and design phase. It will include a description of the mining methods, ventilation, fill, ore handling, services and infrastructure. The utilisation of existing assets and the development of innovative ideas were essential to the successful economic development of the George Fisher Mine.

The transportation of solids by pipeline is not new. In 1891 a United States patent broadly covering a method of pumping coal with water was granted to W. C. Andrews. His pilot plant was constructed on what is now the site of the New- York Public Library in Manhattan. His process was applied to pumping coal mine waste back into the worked out portion of coal mines. On October 26, 1967, the world's first long distance iron ore slurry line was put into service by Savage River Mines. The commissioning of this 5.0 million dollar installation climaxed three years of development, testing, and construction and proved the Company's faith in pioneering' this unique transportation method for iron ore. This paper will discuss some of the more pertinent items in connection with that three-year period. Also to be discussed will be the operation of this line during the past eleven months.

Despite the large areas of sedimentary basins in Western Australia, the coal resources are very meagre., This is a serious problem for the State, which-at present-lacks any other alternate source of fuel-for power production.. Located coal deposits are all poor in quality and mostly brown coals of little importance. The best..coal suitable for extraction is at Collie, where a black=sub- bituminous non-coking coal is mined. Most other coals recorded are low grade or lignite, with high ash'and moisture content and a low calorific value. Coal was first discovered in Western Australia in the bed of the Irwin River, 50-miles south-east of Geraldton, by the Gregory brothers, explorers, in the year 18+6,. but although investigated, it has never been developed. The most noteworthy discovery of coal was in the Collie River, 26 miles east of Bunbury, by Arthur Perrin in 1883. Production commenced in 1898 and ever since, Collie has continued to be the State's sole producing coalfield.

A combination of high precision 40Ar/39Ar and U-Pb dating has been used to determine the age of hydrothermal minerals and host rocks in a number of Lachlan Fold Belt (LFB) gold deposits in New South Wales, Au4 ralii In particular, this investigation demonstrates that the UAr/ Ar technique of K-Ar dating can be used to determine the timing of mineralization in Palaeozoic systems.A close temporal link between mineralization and Late Ordovician to Early Silurian magmatism is indicated by the dating work. Hydrothermal sericite from the Goonumbla p8rph gy Cu deposit and Glendale Au prospect yieldsAt/ Ar step heating ages between 437.9 ¦ 1.1 and 441.2 ¦ 1.1 Ma (16), and4 minjrnum age of about 425 Ma has been obtained by Ar/ Ar dating of hydrothermal amphibole from the Browns Creek Au-Cu skarn deposit. Hydrothermal aluniI8 frog the Gidginbung epithermal Au deposit yields reset 44 Ar/ Ar ages of 401.0 ¦ 1.3 to 417.3 ¦ 1.3 Ma (16). U-Pb dating by ion microprobe on magmatic zircons from the vicinity of the Goonumbla and Gidginbung deposits gives ages of 438 ¦ 3.5 Ma (2 6), and 435 ¦ 2.5 Ma (2 (7) respectimly, W a minimum age of 435 Ma has been obtained by Ar/ Ar dating of magmatic phases from volcanic rocks adjacent to the Browns Creek skarn deposit. Magmatic episodes near the Sheahan-Grants gold skarnpost give ages of 479.2 ¦ 1.1 and 467.9 ¦ 4o1 by 'Ar/ 9Ar dating of magmatic amphibole. Most Ar/3yAr age spectra show the effects of partial Ar loss at between 360-420 Ma, probably due to heating caused by granitoid emplacement.The radiometric dating work in this paper suggests a restricted metallogenic epoch in the Late Ordovician-Early Silurian LFB, NSW, of similar duration to that found in the Andean margin and the western Pacific island arcs around the Pacific Rini.

The Fosterville Goldmine in Victoria employs bacterial oxidation (BIOX« Process) to liberate gold from its flotation concentrate. Gold occurrence is primarily as submicron particles in pyrite and arsenopyrite and has been described as being in æsolid solutionÆ and therefore not amenable to direct cyanidation even with fine grinding. Once liberated by the oxidation process, the gold is then available for cyanide leaching. While the oxidation process is very effective, it has been found that a portion of the liberated gold can become suspended in the liquid phase in what appears to be a colloidal state. This liquid becomes a waste stream during washing of the oxidised solids and the suspended gold is therefore lost. This paper discusses investigations into the causes of the loss and also describes the successful use of quebracho tannin in reducing colloidal gold loss. Laboratory and subsequent plant trials, showed a gain of 2.6 per cent in overall gold recovery based on mill feed and waste stream data.

Processing of lead-zinc and copper ores by Mount Isa Mines Limited produces large quantit- ies of concentrator tailings waste which is pumped as a slurry to special dams where the solids are allowed to settle and dry out. These areas are unattractive and show no signs of encroachment by plant life even though the surfaces of some dams have remained undisturbed for more than a decade. During 1970 Mount Isa Mines Limited commenced a long term research program in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, University of Queensland to deter- mine possible methods of establishing a plant cover on this material. Research has defined the major factors limiting plant growth in the tailings medium. Modification of the edaphic conditions through fertilizer inputs, particularly of phosphorus and nitrogen, and alteration of "soil" physical properties by incorporation of mulching mater- ials, provided conditions which allowed plant growth. The outstanding "soil" amendment treatment was incorporation of fly ash, a waste product of the company's coal fired power stations. A range of crop and pasture species have been selected which have grown well with adequate irrigation under the amended conditions in the field. Further research is assessing a range of native plant species and agronomic techniques to provide a stable plant cover on the tailings dams.

This paper focuses on the impact of high pulp temperature on sphalerite flotation after the zinc regrind circuit in the Zinc Plant of Somincor, owned and operated by Lundin Mining Corporation. In the zinc circuit, the zinc rougher concentrate is reground with forged steel media before flotation with one stage of roughing and scavenging, and three stages of cleaning to obtain a zinc final concentrate (zinc grade >50 per cent). After regrinding, sphalerite flotation has been found to be seriously affected by high pulp temperature which may occur during the summer months. Mineral recoveries were found to be seriously reduced at pulp temperatures above 60¦C. At this high pulp temperature, neither elevated copper sulfate concentration nor a decreased pH alone appreciably increased Zn recovery. However, a combination of these two (eg a decrease in pH from 11.5 to 10.8, and an increase in copper sulfate dosage from 400 g/t to 800 g/t) was found to reduce Zn depression at high pulp temperature. At pulp temperatures below 45¦C, the negative influence of pulp temperature on mineral recoveries was minimal. A systematic series of flotation tests and solution/surface analyses were performed to reveal causes for poor sphalerite flotation at high pulp temperature after regrinding. The decrease in mineral recovery was shown to be associated with variations in the surface species on mineral particles in response to the increased pulp temperature. These variations in the surface species include collector desorption and superficial oxidation to form lead/zinc oxide/hydroxides on mineral particles. The influence of the type of regrinding media on sphalerite flotation at high pulp temperature was also addressed in this work.

Adopting environmentally acceptable practices in New Zealand is a crucial requirement for mineral wealth development. Recent planned expansions in the coal and gold industry have increasingly placed mining in the media spotlight. A lack of appropriate standard environmental guidelines has resulted in inconsistent responses and assessments of current and proposed mines. These inconsistencies have lead to delays in decisions on developing economic mineral deposits that may have only minor short-term impacts, and have also allowed unacceptable environmental management practices to continue elsewhere. A research collaboration between CRL Energy, Landcare Research, University of Canterbury and University of Otago aims to provide regulator groups and the mining industry with a unified approach to the requirements of the Resource Management Act 1991,the legislation that largely drives the nationÆs environmental policies and guidelines. The tangible outcome of this research program will be water quality and impact management guidelines integrated into a decision-making framework. The result of this unification will assist in the development of viable mineral deposits and minimise environmental impacts. The framework will be derived from a synthesis of three objectives. Objective 1 identifies potential water quality impact. This objective is based on a targeted geochemical study of the lithology and waterways of the West Coast and Southland regions. Objective 2 categorises the degree of impacts on the ecology of receiving aquatic ecosystems and determines the processes that drive aquatic ecosystem recovery. Objective 3 identifies best strategies to sufficiently manage impacted ecosystems, and to prevent future unacceptable impacts. Wide consultation with representatives of the mining industry and regulator groups will occur frequently during the development stages of the framework. It is anticipated that this multidisciplinary approach will provide a robust and coherent, standardised system that will assist in achieving industry and environmental targets.

The ZA-27 zinc base alloy was poured into cylindrical moulds and solidified under different conditions ie normal freezing and unidirectional freezing. In addition a cylindrical ingot with rheocast material was obtained by stopping the stirring action and, at a specific solid fraction, gravity casting it into a graphite mould. It was observed that the material obtained under normal freezing conditions is likely to present both segregation and inverted pipe. In contrast, the unidirectional solidified and the rheocast cylinders showed the absence of inverted pipe. The segregation pattern was quite irregular in the rheocast ingot while such segregation was more uniform in the unidirectional solidified cylinder. By virtue of these observations, the inverted pipe formation may be ascribed to the interdendritic flow, while the irregular segregation pattern in the rheocast ingot may be attributed to an irregular distribution of the liquid and solid fraction along such a cylinder.

The Onemana prospect is located on the eastern Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand. Systematic exploration involving surface geological mapping, geophysics, rock and soil geochemistry, reverse-circulation and diamond drilling has identified a number of important features of a fossil hydrothermal system at Onemana. This relatively intact gold mineralised system is hosted within a sequence of rhyolitic volcanics and volcaniclastics, overlain by lake sediments, sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccia. The system lies within a graben/half graben bounded by major NE-trending faults which form the approximate boundaries to hydrothermal alteration. Rock and soil geochemistry indicate a broad zone of anomalous gold, silver, arsenic, mercury and antimony. Overlapping elevated rock and soil gold anomalies indicate strongest mineralisation occurs over two zones of hydrothermal brecciation named 'Breccia Knob' and 'Western Ridge'. Geophysical data obtained from Gradient Array Resistivity and Ground Magnetics have been used to produce anomaly maps. The terrain corrected resistivity plot shows a number of well defined linear resistivity anomalies which are believed to represent large silicified and quartz veined bodies at relatively shallow depths. The strongest of these anomalies correspond with 'Breccia Knob' and 'Western Ridge'. Reverse-circulation and diamond drilling targeting these resistivity and geochemical anomalies has confirmed wide intervals of quartz veining, silicification and gold mineralisation. Petrologic data based on drill samples indicates the existence of a laterally extensive gold bearing epithermal system. Hydrothermal alteration is thought to have been caused by strongly convecting, two-phase (boiling), near-neutral chloride fluids which persisted at high temperatures (170 - 220¦C) to the paleosurface. A geological model is postulated of a large, complex, hydrothermal system developed in a shallow lake or marginal lake environment created by rifting and graben development within a recently extinct rhyolitic volcanic centre. Geothermal activity alternated between relatively quiescent periods of unrestricted fluid upflow and sinter development interspersed with violent hydrothermal eruptions caused by near surface silica capping and overpressuring above a major fluid conduit centred under 'Breccia Knob'.  Opportunities for precious metal mineralisation are evident from drilling to date. Upflow of near-neutral chloride fluids to shallow depths favours the presence of strongly mineralised stockworks at relatively shallow depths. Periodic hydrothermal eruptions would have caused fracturing and rapid depressurisation of the hydrothermal system, strongly favouring the precipitation of gold from solution both near surface and within feeder-vein systems at depth.

Reagents used for batch flotation tests were Aeroxanthate-343 & 350, Dow Z-6, & reagent-4037 (from Benambra) as copper collectors; Na2SiO3 & Na2S2O3as gangue depressants; lime & HCl as pH regulators; and pine oil & MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) as flotation frothers. A Denver Sub A flotation cell of capacity 250 gms was used for the batch flotation experiments. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used for copper assays and microscopy for selectivity and liberation studies. Melbourne tap water was used throughout the experiments. Unless otherwise stated, the following parameters apply to the flotation experiments: flotation impeller speed - 1300 rpm, pulp density during flotation- 22%, reagents addition - in 4 stages, total conditioning time for collectors - 8 minutes, total flotation time- 9 minutes. A variable quantity of copper mineral collector according to the test in question was added, then conditioned the pulp for 2 minutes. The froth was removed by hand, scraping the full length of the cell at constant depth every 10 seconds. No frother is required for this copper tailing flotation. Four concentrates were collected after addition of collector and conditioning at 2,4,6 and 9 minutes. The pulp volume was maintained at a constant level to yield a constant froth depth.

"Geometallurgy brings together geologists, mine planners and process engineers to extract meaningful mineralogical and textural information from an orebody, with a view to predicting its metallurgical response. Preferably, automated analytical techniques, which provide mineralogical and textural information, should process a large number of samples quickly, relatively inexpensively and reliably. Microfocus X-ray computed tomography (µXCT) is capable of producing 3D volumetric information on texture and mineralogy that satisfies some of these criteria. µXCT has been used extensively to study the porosity and internal pore structure of iron ore pellets as part of downstream processing. It has not been widely applied to earlier mineralogical and textural analysis of unprocessed ore, due to the limited ability of X-rays to penetrate high-density samples. Tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits are under-represented in Australia’s inventory of known resources of this deposit type, relative to regions globally with comparable geology. To support discovery of major new deposits, a continental scale analysis of Australia’s potential for tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits is being undertaken. The analysis applies a mineral systems approach to map the four essential components of the ore-forming systems:1. sources of ore constituents2. crustal and mantle lithospheric architecture3. energy sources or drivers of the ore-forming systems4. gradients in ore depositional physico-chemical parameters.The results reveal several regions of Australia with potential for discovery of large tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits, mostly around the margins of Archean and Proterozoic lithospheric blocks. The East China Mesozoic metallogenic province hosts the world’s largest resources of tungsten, tin, molybdenum, antimony and bismuth, with additional important gold, silver, mercury, lead, zinc, copper, uranium and iron deposits. These deposits form several giant metallogenic belts, including South China, Middle-Lower Yangtze River Valley, East Qinling-Dabie, eastern North China Craton and North-east China. Available data demonstrate that these metallogeneic belts are the products of episodic magmatic and related hydrothermal events between ~240 and ~80 Ma. Each magmatic-hydrothermal episode has produced distinct deposit assemblages that can be readily linked to the Mesozoic geodynamic evolution of East China, involving continental collision between the North China Craton and South China Block at 220–200 Ma, oblique subduction of the Izanagi plate under the Eurasian continent at ca 170–135 Ma and post-subduction extension and lithospheric delamination at 130–80 Ma. Metallogeny in north-eastern China is more complicated due to prolonged tectonic evolution related to southward subduction of the Mongolian–Okhotsk plate and westward oblique subduction of the Izanagi plate, and subsequent continental collision and post-collisional processes.CITATION:Mao, J W, Xie, G Q and Cheng, Y B, 2015. The Eloise Cu-Au deposit is 60 km SE of Cloncurry in NW Queensland and has a current indicated reserve of 3.2 Mt @ 5.8 per cent Cu, 1.5gA Au and I9g/t Ag. It is hosted by metasediments and metabasic rocks that underwent amphibolite facies metamorphism at 550-600¦C and less than 3.5 kb. Peak metamorphism coincided with the regional D2 event which produced an S2 foliation with north-south strike and variable sub-vertical to steep east or west dip. The deposit is associated with several major shear zones parallel to the S2 foliation. The lodes form part of a large alteration system that is localised by the retrograde shear zones. Homblende-biotite-quartz with minor sulphides occur early in the alteration paragenesis which is overprinted by chlorite-muscovite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ¦calcite+¦nagnetite. The later assemblage replaces the earlier Fe-K alteration as well as Fe-rich metamorphic assemblages such as homblende, biotite and staurolite indicating a post peak metamorphism timing for ore formation. Although replacive textures are the most common, the alteration can display open space infill and brecciation as well as durchbewegung and mylonite textures indicating that mineralisation occurred during ongoing ductile deformation. All these features are crosscut by a later brittle phase of calcite-chlorite-quartz¦pyrite alteration.

The Shagou deposit is located along NE-trending faults within the high-grade metamorphic basement of the Xiong’er Terrane in the Qinling orogenic belt. It is a large Ag-Pb-Zn deposit hosted in the Taihua Supergroup and has proven reserves of 1.54 Mt of ore with grades of 767 g/t Ag, 13.24 per cent Pb and 4.31 per cent Zn. The hydrothermal ore-forming process can be divided into early quartz-pyrite, middle quartz-polymetallic sulfides and late quartz-carbonate stages. Four types of fluid inclusions (ie pure carbonic, carbonic, pure aqueous and aqueous) can be distinguished in quartz. Fluid inclusion, hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur isotope systematics indicate that the ore-forming fluids are initially deeply sourced metamorphic water with meteoric water gradually mixed in the later stages. Sulfur isotope data show that the ore-forming fluids originated from both the Taihua Supergroup and the sedimentary successions of the Guandaokou and Luanchuan Groups (CSC) located to the south of the Machaoying Fault. A genetic model of the Shagou deposit is proposed as follows: CSC subducted northward along the Machaoying Fault beneath the Xiong’er Terrane during the Mesozoic collision between the North China Craton and South China Block. Subsequent dehydration resulted in the devolatilisation of fluids rich in CO2. These fluids migrated upwards, reacted with the Taihua Supergroup and formed the Shagou deposit.CITATION:Han, J-S, Yao, J-M and Chen, H, 2015.
