THE object of this chapter is to present data concerning the effect of the introduction of relatively slight amounts of carbon and nitrogen into supersaturated solution in iron. The study is confined to the alpha temperature range of both the Fe-C and Fe-N systems. The age-harden-ing characteristics of these two systems are considered. These data are compared to those of other age-hardening alloy systems and a "classifica-tion" is essayed. A.-RELATION OF LATTICE PARAMETER AND ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY TO CHANGES IN PHYSICAL PROPERTIES DUE TO AGING OF FE-C ALLOYS Since Whiteley1 in 1927 showed that some of the iron carbide that is normally present in slowly cooled low carbon-iron alloys disappears on rapid cooling from just below the A1 point, interest has been manifested in the possibilities of age-hardening in these alloys. Masing and Koch,2 and at the same time and independently, W. Koster,3 proved these alloys to be age-hardenable. A. A. Bates4 a little later also published an interesting paper on changes in physical properties due to the aging of low-carbon steels. Many other papers have appeared showing changes in physical properties in specific instances due to this same phenomenon.

Most minerals have experienced a slow hut perceptible decline in their annual primary production growth over the past hundred years. This decline is due to a combination of factors: (1) increased recycling; (2) exhaustion of the more accessible or higher grade ores; (3) partial substitution; (4) the more efficient use of materials; (5) progressive saturation of markets as living standards rise. Therefore, future demand for new mineral resources will probably be lower than anticipated. As the world population stabilizes, this slowdown in production growth will become even more pronounced.

HUDSON MAXIM, Brooklyn, N. Y.-Immediately after the creation of the Naval Consulting Board, Admiral Strauss, Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance of the Navy, told members of the Board that the most important problem for the scientists to solve was erosion in large guns. The Navy, for years, had been working on the problem with marked suceess, but there was much yet remaining to be accomplished. As Chairman of the Committee on Ordnance and Explosives of the Naval Consulting Board, I communicated with several experts in the manufacture of steel, principal among whom was Prof. Howe. He generously agreed to help in every way possible, and the work that he has done and the time that he has spent upon it can he appreciated only by reading his paper. Prof. Howe asked for some rings. from a, certain 14-in. gun which Admiral Strauss had mentioned in particular, and in which, he had informed us, at each shot the bore of the gun, was enlarged about 0.001 in.,' and that after a relatively small number of rounds it was considerably eroded. It has puzzled scientists for a long time to account for the peculiar erosive effect produced by the powder gases in a gun, arid: what Prof. Howe has done in his paper is worthy of Sherlock Holmes. He is a veritable Sherlock Holmes of science.

All electrical geophysical methods depend for their operation upon the effects produced by the flow of an electric current. By studying these effects it is possible to predict the general axis of current flow. The greater flow of current is in the path of greatest effective conductivity; and since the effective conductivity of a mineralized zone is different from that of its surrounding envelope (usually much greater), it is possible to locate such a mineralized zone by the distribution of current. Due consideration must be given, of course, to geological structure, to type of mineralization, and to other factors. A number of methods are used to cause this flow of current, and various methods arc available for detecting the presence of such current flow and for studying its effects. In a rather detailed way, this paper will discuss the theoretical and practical phases of the inductive methods of geophysical prospecting. Electromagnetic Generation of an Electeomotive Force The inductive method is so named because the current flowing in the conductor is obtained by electromagnetic induction, instead of by the use of ground electrodes through which a current is passed as in the applied potential systems, or by direct contact with the orebody. An alternating current flowing in a coil will create an electromagnetic field around the coil. This field will have the same frequency as the current and will radiate or travel outward from the coil in closed magnetic or flux circuits. These flux circuits (in air or a homogeneous medium) will be perpendicular to the plane of the coil and will extend or travel outward with uniform velocity in every direction. Maximum feld exists in the plane of the coil. Such a coil used for transmitting or as the "energizer" will exhibit similar figure-eight characteristics to those exhibited by the direction-finding coil which will be described in detail later.

THE (110) [001] texture in silicon iron is of considerable interest both from the technological and scientific points of view. Its occurrence was reported more than 20 years ago.1-4 The texture develops by means of secondary re crystallizatjon5 and can be very strong, that is, greater than 90 pct alignment even thouh the primary re crystallization texture is weak or complex. This behavior is in contradistinction to the face-centered metals which develop their strong secondary recrystalliza-tion texture from a strong primary recrystalliza-tion texture.', The microstructural changes accompanying the (110) [001] texture formation in silicon iron are as follows: When properly prepared cold-rolled sheet (i.e., 0.015 in. thick) is annealed at about 800°C, primary recrystallization occurs and a fairly stable fine-grained primary recrystallized matrix of about 0.02-mm-diam grain size is produced. The material at this stage does not have the strong (110) [110] texture. As the temperature is raised to about 900°C, relatively large grains appear in the finegrained matrix and they grow at the expense of the smaller grains to many times the sheet thickness. In time the complete sample is consumed by these large grains. This process of the growth of relatively few grains (about one in 105 primary grains) at the expense of many grains is called secondary recrystallization. Since all the secondary grains are of essentially (110) [001.] orientation, the strong texture is developed by this secondary recrystallization process. Theories of the (110) [001] texture in polycrystal-line silicon iron have been proposed by Decker and Harker and by Dunn.Decker and Harker have shown that grains initially in the (110) [001] orientation will upon annealing after cold-rolling, re-crystallize back to the initial orientation. To account for the sharp texture in silicon iron they propose that (110) [001] grains become more highly strained than grains in other orientations and therefore recrystallize first. They are then the lowest energy grains and can consume their higher energy neighbors. Grains in orientations other than (110)

THE new low-alloy high-strength steels are obviously here to stay. With 75 per cent higher yield strength and 50 per cent higher tensile strength than plain carbon structural steel, they permit 20 to 40 per cent weight savings and 10 per cent or more increase in pay load in the con-struction of railroad cars, buses, trucks, and a great variety of material-handling equipment. Their cost is low enough so that the extra cost of the new lighter construction over that with carbon steel offers an attrac-tive self-liquidating investment; in some instances new construction with these low-alloy steels may even be as cheap as with plain carbon steel. A considerable and rapidly growing demand for the low-alloy steels has already sprung up. The many steel compositions that have appeared on the market lately 18,27,28,29,30 to meet this demand would seem to indicate that no single composition is uniquely fitted for the purpose. However, no doubt some compositions are more suitable than others. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to compare the effects of the various alloying elements that might be used in the low-alloy steels in order to choose the metallurgically most logical composition, paying due regard, of course, to the economic aspects involved.

A study was made of the effect of ingot structure on the strength and ductility of high-strength wrought-aluminum alloys. It was found that a fine-cast structure facilitated complete homogenization which, in turn, resulted in significant increases in ductility and strength. A completely homogenized 7075-T6 alloy developed tensile properties of 85,000 psi UTS, 75,000 psi YS, with 40 pct RA. Completely homogenized 7001-T6 alloy tensile properties were 102,000 psi UTS, 99,000 psi YS, with 19 pct Ra. A method was devised for making small ingots having secondary dendrite arm spacing of less than 10 u. This method involved multiple-pass arc melting of commercial rolled plate with a tungsten electvode. This material could be completely homogenized after 3 hr at 900°F; homogenization of the original plate material was not complete after 120 hv at 900°F. Degree of homogeneity was determined by use of metallographic and electron-microprobe analyses. The electron-micro-probe study also showed the preferential segregation of solutes in the microstructure. HIGH-strength aluminum alloys, such as those of the 7000 series, usually freeze by the formation and growth of dendrites. The dendrite arm spacing (DAS) depends on the rate of solidification.' Commercial ingots are usually direct chill-cast to promote more rapid solidification, but, due to the large mass of the ingot, localized solidification times are long and a large DAS results. During solidification, solute elements are rejected by the solid as it forms, causing enrichment of the liquid and ultimately solute-rich interdendritic regions. In order to attain a homogeneous ingot, the segregated solutes must diffuse across the dendrite arms. The larger the DM, the longer the time for complete homogenization. In the case of commercial ingots, the DAS is so large that the time for complete homogenization is prohibitively long and, therefore, second phases or compounds are always present. These un-dissolved phases are carried over to the wrought material during processing, resulting in an impairment of strength and ductility. In addition, the mechanical fibering of the undissolved second phases or compounds during working results in mechanical property anisotropy. If complete homogenization could be attained, higher ductility could be expected. The realization of higher ductility at current strength levels is a desirable objective; however, if higher-strength alloys were wanted, it might be possible to sacrifice some of this ductility by adding more solute elements and produce even higher-strength alloys than are currently available. Further, if complete homogenization leads to more efficient utilization of solute elements, then more dilute alloys should have relatively high strengths with very high ductility. In all instances, it would be expected that the degree of mechanical property anisotropy due to mechanical fibering would be reduced. Therefore, it was the purpose of this investigation to produce cast structures that would facilitate homogenization and to determine the effect of homogenization on the properties of high-strength, wrought-aluminum alloys. MATERIAL CLASSIFICATION Commercial Alloys. In order to illustrate the non-homogeneous condition that exists in commercial high-strength, wrought-aluminum alloys, typical micro-structures of 7001, 7075, and 7178 are shown in Fig. 1. The chemical compositional specifications of these alloys are given in Table I. It can be seen in Fig. 1 that a considerable amount of undissolved second-phase material is present in each of these alloys. The solute elements associated with the undissolved phases were identified by electron microanalyses. Back-scattered electron images and characteristic X-ray images of the three commercial alloys are shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. These data indicate that the second phases are regions of high copper and high iron-copper concentrations. The second-phase material also was analyzed for magnesium, zinc, manganese, chromium, and silicon, but no significant enrichment above that of the matrix was found. Therefore, the problem of homogenization resolved itself into one of dissolving the copper-rich and the iron-copper-rich second phases. In order to accomplish this objective, two approaches were made. The first was to reduce the iron as low as possible since this element has a maximum solid solubility of 0.03 pct in aluminum. The second was to produce cast structures with finer DAS to facilitate dissolving the second phases. Commercially Produced High-Purity Alloys. A special high-purity, 2000-lb ingot of 7075 alloy was made by a commercial producer. This alloy contained the following weight percentages of solutes: 5.63 Zn, 2.48 Mg, 1.49 Cu, and 0.21 Cr. All other elements combined were less than 0.02 pct by wt including iron and silicon at less than 0.01 pct each. The ingot was cast and processed into rolled plate using standard commercial techniques. Microstructures of standard commercial 7075 and the special high-purity 7075 are shown in Fig. 5. It can be seen from this figure that the high-purity alloy has less undissolved second-phase material, but a significant amount was still present. The proper representation of equilibria involving graphitic carbon in the constitutional diagram of the iron-carbon system is admittedly an unsolved problem, the complete solution of which will probably require the establishment of more experimental evidence than is at this time available. The object of this paper is to present the author's observations on some of the phenomena in question and his interpretation of this and other recorded evidence. The chief of the recently disputed questions upon which the author has experimental evidence concerns the occurrence of graphitization at temperatures below the Al point. In a paper1 presented at the September, 1919, meeting of this Institute, the following is found: "the results given would seem to indicate that the graphite eutectoid lies at a smaller value of carbon content than has been previously supposed. At least this is true unless there is either a marked formation of graphite eutectoid at these rates of cooling, or a decomposition of pearlite into graphite, both rather unlikely suppositions, but not impossible ones." In a discussion of this paper, H. A. Schwartz2 takes the position that the possibility of graphitization occurring below the A1 point is an open question, but that complete graphitization (to less than 0.10 per cent, combined carbon) commonly occurs above this temperature. Another opinion from the malleable castings industry is found in a recent paper3 by Touceda: "Also the carbide of iron can be broken up into its two soft constituents at the temperature referred to. This temperature is called the critical temperature, or critical range, and for air-furnace hard-iron castings it is in the vicinity of 1440" F. It is the

The ores mined by the Santa Gertrudis Co. at Pachuca, Mexico, arc mainly silver-bearing; they also yield some gold and carry a little copper. Strong cyanide solutions are used to dissolve the silver and gold, and the mechanical loss of cyanide at the tailings filter has been considerable. Prior to the year 1923, the pulp, after agitation, was given a 35 to 37-min. wash with barren solution in a Butters-type leaf filter; the discharged slime cake was repulped and pumped into eight Merrill self-sluicing slime presses in which the slime was given a further wash with barren solution for 25 to 35 min., followed by a 10-min. water wash. At that time the barren solution titrated around 0.350 per cent. free KCN and 0.500 per cent. total KCN. (Aero brand cyanide is used.) It can readily be seen that a 10-min. water wash would leave considerable cyanide in the filter cake, which of course was a total loss. This averaged 0.522 kg. (1.15 Ib.) KCN per ton of solution. As the daily discharge to the dam was 1600 tons' of slime of a 2:1 ratio of liquid to solid, the value of this mechanical loss of cyanide was an important item and it's recovery held alluring possibilities. Principle of Cyanide-recovery Process As it had acquired the patent rights to theLayng (H. R.) and Halvor-sen (A. L.) processes, also those of Mills (L. D.) and Crowe (T. B.) after considerable experimental work in its own laboratory and at Tonopah, Nev., The Merrill Company of San Francisco early in 1923 notified the Mexican Corporation and compania de Santa Gertrudis of its process for the recovery of cyanide from weak wash solutions, or for the transference of cyanide from a foul mill solution to a clean alkaline solution. This method is known as the Mills-Crowe process, the principle of which is as follows: The solution from which the cyanidc is to be removed is made acid by bringing it into contact with sulfur dioxide (SO2). The acidified solution is the; transferred to a closed tank in which air and solution are brought into intimate contact. The war emergency has affected every phase of industry. The gas and coke-oven companies have sought faithfully to discharge their responsibility in this critical period and have willingly modified their operations where possible to meet the ever increasing demands made upon them. Our company made commitments for blast-%urnace coke for war purposes which necessitated a reduction in coking time in order to produce the amount required to meet the new demands. At the same time there were certain customers of long standing, who had been supplied with foundry and egg-sized coke produced on fairly long coking periods, who also were engaged in war work and whose patronage we desired to retain. Coke produced on short coking rates from the coal mixture we were then using would not have been satisfactory for these customers. The average width of our ovens is 19¾ in., which is a little wider than the more modern ovens of the present day. They were originally designed to give somewhat cool tops in order to produce a rich gas. This necessitates carrying the heats a little on the warm side so that the tops will be fully carbonized. A reduction in coking time, as is generally known, is accompanied by a reduction in the average size of the coke produced. This is due to the greater shrinkage that takes place at the higher temperatures required to carbonize the charges in a shorter time. The net result is that the coke is more cross fractured and longitudinally fractured and breaks up into small sizes on handling. The cokes produced from the better coking coals seem to be more susceptible to fracture at high temperatures than those from poorer coking coals. A coal mixture that produces a beautiful foundry-sized coke at 30 to 36 hr. may yield a product at 18 hr. that would be so badly fractured as to be unsatisfactory for foundry practice. Coking Characteristics OF Coals Our problem was to find some economical innovation and develop a method that would enable us to reduce the coking time and still produce a coke satisfactory to our foundry trade. However, before discussing the results of our present operations, it might be well to present a few observations on the coking characteristics of coals in general. Most coke-oven operators carbonize a blended mixture of coals. It may consist of a single high-volatile coal with a single low-volatile coal, or of a combination of several high-volatile and low-volatile coals. Medium-volatile coals of the Eagle seam are used for the production of high-grade foundry coke. Medium and high-volatile coals are often blended with one or more low-volatile coals. The possibilities are almost infinite, but the combinations are limited by such factors as cost and facilities for handling multicoal mixtures, and by other practical considerations. Every coal has characteristics that make it blend better with a particular coal or coals in preference to others. This property has

This paper is presented in fulfillment of the promise made in my paper, " Remarks upon Surveying-Instruments,"" etc., and much of the material which would constitute an appropriate introductioil here is omitted, because it has been already published by the Institute, in connection with my own contributions- or those of Mr. Scott and others, in vols. xxviii. to xxxi. of the Transactions, and in the special Institute volume on Mine-Surveying Instruments. In these preceding publications will be found, for instance, descriptions of the writer's " miner's transit-theodolite" of 1863,† and his later " angleometer,"‡ both of which were steps of the progress in engineering instruments and methods which originated in the work of Bourns, before 1842, on the " BoxTunnel " of the Great Western railway in England, in which he had to make connections by direct telescopic sights down the shafts. About 1870 the writer devised a practical and much superior plan, and made detailed drawings for an instrument to meet all the conditions he had proposed prior to that year. The detailed plans were communicated to a celebrated optical firm in London; but, owing to their loss (in Paris or Germany, it is believed) and to other reasons, the matter was, for the time, allowed to lapse. Following upon Bourns's idea, my friend, the late Mr. Beansland, introduced, in 1856, a new system and a portable astronomical instrument.§ Such instruments, however, were neither common nor convenient, and did not come into general use among engineers.

The deformation and fracture characteristics of lithium-fluoride single crystals stressed in compression at room temperature have been studied. In as-cleaved specimens the stress-strain curves were variable; two types of {110} fractures were observed in the vicinity of kink bands. The stress-strain curves of annealed crystals were reproducible; {100} cracks formed which propagated along the (100) and (110) planes. The deformation and fracture characteristics were affected by quenching and X-ray irradiation. STUDY of the mechanical behavior of nonmetallic materials has received considerable impetus in recent years because of the need to overcome the problem of brittleness before the refractory properties of nonmetallics can be fully exploited. Ionic crystals provide a convenient and simplified starting point from which to study the deformation and fracture processes in nonmetallic materials. Early investigations of the mechanical behavior of non-metals were restricted largely to determinations of the crystallographic indices of the cleavage and fracture planes and the glide and twinning elements. Until recently, only occasional systematic studies of the deformation characteristics of non-metals have been made; and investigations of the forces necessary to initiate plastic deformation and the factors which affect the flow characteristics have been restricted largely to studies of sodium chloride'-7 , magnesium oxides-l3 and lithium fluoride. 14-22 Fracture studies on alkali halide and metal oxide single crystals have been limited despite the fact that these materials have a number of advantages for fracture studies. Because they are transparent, the cracks which form can be viewed in three dimensions instead of in two dimensions as in metals. Also, they exhibit stress birefringence under polarized illumination, which enables the internal stress pattern and, therefore, the distribution of dislocations to be examined in the vicinity of the fracture. Early workers1-4 have shown that ionic crystals with a cubic structure fracture in tension along the (100) plane normal to the applied stress. These fractures were brittle at room temperature and propagated very rapidly across the cross section of the crystal. More recently, Stokes, Johnston, and Lil0 have studied crack formation in compressed magnesium-oxide single crystals. They found that the cracks, which were observed after about 3 pct strain, formed in the region of a kink band and lay on conjugate (110) slip planes instead of the usual(100) cleavage plane. Two different types of cracks were noted: stroh23 and secondary. The Stroh cracks did not exist merely on the surface but extended through the specimen in the form of tiny slits. A secondary

EARLY in 1917, it became evident, owing to existing and pending market conditions, that a substitute for crude petroleum must be found for firing the smelter furnaces. After a review of the plants then existing, it was deemed advisable to depart from their practice and to adopt the following described system of distributing pulverized coal to the furnaces. The principal advantages of the proposed system, which influenced this decision, were: (1) Equal safety; no pulverized coal is stored at the furnaces; (2) greater ease of operation, furnace fires being controlled by regulating valves in burner branches, as in gas firing; (3) better organization; all machinery, including pulverized coal feed, is under one roof, and the organization is separate from the furnace department; (4) greater cleanliness; all machinery is under vacuum; (5) greater flexibility of application; the coal and air mixture can be piped where needed. The design of the plant is the result of the combined efforts of the local engineering staff and of the machinery manufacturers. Many new features were embodied in this design to insure greater safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of handling. After 14 months of continuous operation, the plant has proved entirely satisfactory. The building is of structural steel, covered with corrugated steel, with many windows and is painted light gray inside and out. The building floor is of concrete with ample drains to the sewer, and the building is equipped with fire and service water piping. Fig. 1 shows the east side of the building and the incline conveyor from the raw-coal bins.

ABRASIVES include the substances, natural or artificial, that are used to grind, polish, abrade, scour, clean or otherwise remove solid material, usually by rubbing action but also by impact (sandblasting, for example). They do not include abrasive tools-for instance, lathe tools and files-or polishing agents such as waxes, which act by filling pores. Detergents and cleaners whose action is chemical rather than physical are omitted although some chemical action polishes and cleaners may also contain solid abrasives; for example, many metal polishes. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS The most important physical properties of materials that qualify them for use as abrasives are hardness, toughness (or brittleness), grain shape and size, character of fracture or cleavage, purity or uniformity. For making bonded grain abrasives such as grinding wheels, additional important factors are stability under high heat and bonding characteristics of grain surfaces. The economic factors of cost and availability are always important. No one single property is paramount for any use. For some uses extreme hardness and toughness are needed, as in diamonds for drill bits; for others, the factors of greatest importance are hardness and ability to break down slowly under use, to develop fresh cutting edges when grains become worn-for example, in garnet for sandpaper, neither highly cleavable or friable grains nor extremely tough grains

It is a distinct privilege to participate in this meeting convened to honor the memory of Henry Marion Howe, a distinguished scientist and metallurgist. Many have added to our rapidly growing fund of metallurgical knowledge but few have made the unique contribution of formulating basic concepts essential to an over-all comprehensive view of the subject of metallography. Of those previously selected to deliver this lecture, several have added a personal touch to their discourse because they were able to refer to their associations with Dr. Howe. It was not my good fortune to know him or to enjoy his inspiring influence. Like most of you, my contact has been with his published works, which are outstanding in that they provide lucid, detailed expositions of the nature and behavior of metals and alloys. His deep understanding and clarity of expression have greatly accelerated our progress in metallography and in the use of metals. The degree to which a man's thinking, experimentation and writing contribute toward an understanding of basic laws and phenomena determines whether his life's work is of transitory or permanent value. This occasion appropriately recognizes the fundamental importance of Dr. Howe's pioneer work in the field of metallurgy.. On two former occasions, gray iron was selected as a subject for discussion. The fact that the production of pig iron has not been discussed before does not reflect any lack of interest on the part of Dr. Howe or former lecturers in the process that underlies the production of steel. Although Dr. Howe's work in his later years centered around metallography, his earlier publications show a considerable interest in the production of iron and steel. He recognized that in the ascending spiral of metallurgical advancement we are not winding a single thread but are weaving a complex fabric. Specific evidence of his interest in the production of pig iron may be found in his book' on The Metallography of Cast Iron and Steel. In explaining why blast furnaces have been in constant use for about 600 years, he says: "The process is economical because it utilizes with extraordinary completeness the calorific power of the coke due to the thorough transfer of heat from the gaseous products of combustion to the charge." This emphasis on heat transfer, overlooked in many more extended and more recent discussions of the blast-furnace process, illustrates Professor Howe's ability to see the essentials. Other distinct advantages of the blast furnace, such as the removal of- much of the sulphur and practically all of the oxygen, were mentioned. It was also stated that although the blastfurnace process is complex in nature, its outward form is comparatively simple, thus permitting large-scale production at small labor costs. Generation of Waves by storms, and the transformation of waves in shallow water by local bottom topography are briefly reviewed. A detailed description of water motion in waves explains the nature and distribution of wave forces. A numerical example dealing with forces and moments against vertical piles summarizes the principles involved. Introduction The oil industry is moving into the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The design and construction of offshore drilling rigs present a number of difficult problems, among them problems involving the action of waves on fixed and floating structures. This paper deals with our present knowledge of ocean waves as it pertains to these problems, and the principles involved in computing wave forces against fixed structures. It is hoped that the more difficult case pertaining to floating structures can be discussed at a later time. None of the engincering aspects of the problem are entered upon in this paper, yet an understanding of the principles presented here should be helpful in the solution of practical problems. Waves are capable of exerting almost unbelievable forces. During a gale, waves at the harbor entrance of Amsterdam Canal in Holland lifted a 20-ton concrete block, which was resting on the bottom in 12ft of water, and deposited it on top of a pier which was 5 ft above the high water mark. At Wick Breakwater in Scotland, a mass of large stones in cement and bound together with iron rods, weighing 1350 tons, was broken loose and moved bodily! But one need not go to Holland or Scotland to find evidence of damage that waves are capable of inflicting (Fig I and 2). What is the mechanism by which waves are capable of exerting such enormous forces? To answer this, we must consider briefly the nature of wave motion. When a wind blows over a wheat field, waves appear to travel across the field, whereas the wheat itself remains rooted, slowly swinging back and forth. Similarly, in the case of water waves, the waveform travels swiftly over the water surface, whereas the water particles oscillate back and forth, but scarcely advance. The speed of the wave form is called wave velocity, the speed of the water particles is called orbital velocity. This fundamental difference between wave velocity and orbital velocity was already recognized by Leonardo da Vinci. Orbital velocity is generally much slower than wave velocity except for a breaking wave, a case which is of particular importance in the application to engineering problems. While in the past, local governments have focused on feeding their large populations, the transfer of modern technology to the agricultural sector has produced record crop years in many of these countries. As a result, agricultural objectives have become more manageable, prompting governments to shift priorities to the accelerated development of their industrial sectors. The basis of any sustained industrialization program, the governments concede, is the development of a vibrant minerals sector.
