Production statistics show that during the period of emergence from the depression the coal industry was becoming increasingly cognizant of the economic and competitive necessity for mechanizing. About 1935 many of its leaders were becoming aware also of the alarming scarcity of men properly trained to cope with the new problems of mechanization. In order to get a factual statement of this problem, a special AIME Coal Division Committee was requested to survey the condition. Its investigation disclosed that graduates of mining schools going into coal mining numbered 16 in 1937 and 15 in 1938. With this as a background, Pittsburgh Coal Co. foresaw that a comprehensive program was necessary if it was to enlist the services of trained technical men, who were an indispensable part of a mechanization program. The purpose of this paper is to review the program set up, to comment on the successes and failures and to outline the future course of action. Summer Work An inescapable conclusion from the mechanization statistics was that the opportunities in coal mining were good. Not only was there a void in technical skill to fill from past years, but the accelerating rate of mechanization indicated an increasing demand for technically trained men for the future. The remedy lay primarily in presenting facts con cerning the coal industry to the undergraduate engineers before they made their professional occupational choice. Based on this idea, one of the key points in the program was summer vacation work for the undergraduate, which, through the inducement of summer earnings, brought men into the mines to take a look at the prospects. This was more successful than statistics indicate because the war scrambled badly the orderly working of the program, but it could not obscure the value of a summer work program. A decided advantage was that it gave the company a preview of the graduate. An observation on this part of the program is that it is extremely hard to gauge lower classmen, and we found it wise to give them the benefit of the doubt, as the last two years in college bring about surprisingly rapid development in some men. We could readily single out the men at the opposite ends of the scale of competence. IT has long been known that the density of a metal usually decreases with cold-work. Thus O'Neilll observed as early as 1861 that cold hammering of commercial hot-rolled copper is accompanied by a decrease of density of 0.2 per cent, and that subsequent annealing restores the original density. The origin of this density change, however, has remained obscure. In particular, experiment has not yet decided whether it is due to the presence of small cavities and an increase in inter-granular surface or to an actual expansion of the lattice itself. This uncertainty in the origin of the change in density is a reflection of our uncertainty as to the changes induced in a metal by cold-working. One school regards cold-working as a breaking up of the original grains into a large number of perfect crystallites somewhat randomly orientated with respect to one another.2 According to this viewpoint, the mere introduction of a large intercrystallite surface induces a net volume expansion. Another school regards cold-working primarily as a distortion of the grains. It is not obvious that this second viewpoint will lead to a net volume expansion. The purpose of the present paper is to show that this is indeed the case, and that this expansion is of the right order of magnitude to explain existing experimental data. The physical basis for the association of an expansion with distortion lies essentially in the variation of the elastic moduli with volume. This variation is considerable. Thus from Table I we see that a I per cent increase in volume for the case of copper will decrease the bulk modulus K by 10 per cent, the shearing modulus µ by 3.8 per cent. If we thus twist a rod through a given angle, we shall do less work upon it if it increases slightly in volume, thereby reducing the torsion modulus that involves as a factor the shearing modulus. A general principle3 in physics states that the rod will so adjust itself as to have a minimum potential energy consistent with the end restraints. It will therefore expand. In order to obtain a quantitative comparison with experiment, we follow Maier4 in comparing the lattice expansion with the latent energy of cold-work. This latent energy has been measured directly by Taylor and Quinney5 on copper rods subjected to torsion, and may amount to as much as 15 per cent of the total work done upon the specimens. MAXIMUM furnace efficiency and close control of final steel composition demand that the steel melter be able to follow closely the variations in the carbon content of the bath. For many years, the fracture test has been used by melters for estimating carbon, because it requires only a very short time to pour a sample into a chill mold, cool it in water, break it with a sledge hammer, and observe the fracture. After long experience gained from the observation of such fractures, most melters are able to estimate the carbon content of steel with amazing accuracy, particularly in the lower carbon ranges. Notwithstanding the utility of the fracture test, there has been widespread interest in other methods for rapid carbon determination to supplement it and to ensure against possible errors in human judgment. Several methods, based upon measurement of magnetic properties as functions of carbon content, have been described in the literature1-6 and have been found to give reasonably reliable results in plant practice when scrap composition is known and controlled. A difficulty encountered in the use of analyzers of the magnetic type is that alloying elements do change the relationship between carbon content and magnetic properties and it becomes necessary to establish calibration curves for all the expected combinations of alloy residuals that are not oxidized in the bath. The work reported here is of an investigation of a method that is independent of alloying elements normally present in constructional steels, being based upon the relatively well-known fact that in plain carbon and low-alloy steels martensitic hardness is a function of carbon content alone. WORK OF OTHER INVESTIGATORS In 1938, Burns, Moore and Archer published a curve7 that showed that the hardness of martensite is a function of carbon from 0.10 to 0.50 per cent and is independent of grain size or alloy content, at least within the range found in constructional S.A.E. compositions. Some of the deeper hardening types investigated, however, contained carbon to a maximum of only 0.20 per cent. Using this principle, Kern8 developed a method of rapid carbon determination for S.A.E. 43xx steels. His procedure consisted of chill-casting a test bar that was large enough to give a surface that could be prepared for Brinell indentations. The test piece was quenched immediately after solidification was complete and hardness readings were taken, so that the carbon content could be read from an experimentally determined curve giving the relationship between as-quenched hardness and carbon. A brief description of this installation was included in a recent paper by H. Kenyon Burch.l The purpose of the present paper is to amplify Mr. Burch's description, as it is felt by the writer that the subject merits more than passing attention. In making a comparison between the common method of hoisting men in mine shafts, and elevator practice in high buildings, the former shows to great disadvantage both as regards safety measures and smoothness of operation. It is surprising that in view of the inducements offered, the step of applying the building equipment direct to the mine shaft has not been taken before, as in many respects the conditions of service are similar, and the objects to be attained are identical. Even without doing this, it is certain that safety to life and limb in the usual method of hoisting men underground can be greatly enhanced by the application to the mine hoist of some of the features of the building elevator. In the case under consideration, the elevator cage runs in a vertical, concrete-lined shaft compartment 5 ft. 11 in. by 5 ft. 6 in. (1.8 by 1.68 m.) in section and 585 ft. (178 m.) deep, while the counterweight runs in the pipe and ladder compartment of a twin shaft 102 ft. (31 m.) distant. The section of the division of this compartment occupied by the counterweight measures 2 ft. 4 1/4 in. by 3 ft. 101/2 in. (0.72 by 1.18 m.), and the counterweight is made in the form of a small cage which suffices to carry two men for the purpose of making inspections or repairs in the pipe and ladder way. The hoist is designed to carry a load of 7500 lb. (3401.94 kg.), ex-clusive of the cage, which weighs 7500 lb., at a maximum speed of 800 ft. (243 m.) per minute. It is installed in the main hoist and compressor building about 220 ft. away from the elevator shaft and is driven by a 160-hp. direct-current motor which is served by a 190-hp. motor generator set. A small direct-current generator mounted at the end of the motor generator set furnishes the current for the controller magnets, brake and fields of the hoist motor and generator. The simultaneous adsorption of water and hydrocarbon vapor from natural gas by three grades of alumina has been studied at atmospheric pressure and temperature. Results of this investigation reveal that the presence of water vapor in the gas inhibits the adsorption of hydrocarbon vapor, although the presence of the latter does not have a pronounced effect upon the adsorption of water vapor. Adsorption of water-hydrocarbon mixtures from gas is divided into three phases. In the first, both water and hydrocarbon vapor are adsorbed; in the second, adsorption of water vapor proceeds while desorption of hydrocarbon takes place; in the third phase, the adsorbyt approaches complete saturation with respect to both water and hydrocarbon vapors. Both theory and experimental data can be applied to design and operation of commercial dehydration plants, and an illustration is presented. Introduction Dehydration of natural gas becomes increasingly important as the operating pressures employed in gas processing and transmission are increased above 500 ib. per sq. in. Gas produced from high-pressure wells is saturated with water vapor when it leaves the reservoir and it continues into the processing plant or transmission system in a saturated condition because of the substantial decrease in temperature due to expansion at the wellhead. Usually this gas is accompanied by liquid water and hydrocarbons that have condensed with the change in temperature and pressure. Without dehydration, gas temperatures must be held at relatively high levels to prevent solidification of gas hydrates. According to Hammerschmidt's data8 on the relationship of pressure to the freezing point of natural-gas hydrates, the minimum safe operating temperatures range from 55' to go°F. for pressures ranging from 500 to 3000 lb. per sq. in., respectively. Often it is difficult to maintain gas temperatures above the hydrate-freezing temperature because of climatic conditions, unless flow-line heaters are installed. Also, in processing gas for its gasoline content at high pressures, it is desirable to employ operating temperatures lower than the hydrate-freezing point. In distributing high-pressure gas, the large pressure drop from line pressure to town-gate pressure often prbduces sufficient cooling to freeze the regulators and disrupt consumer service. Therefore, it is highly essential to dehydrate high-pressure natural gas if smooth and economical operation is to be maintained at all times. Few published data are available on the simultaneous adsorption of water and hydrocarbon vapors. IN a recent investigation, carried out at the Institute for the Study of Metals, the affinity of sul-phur for iron, copper, and manganese was studied over the temperature range 700" to 1300°C.' It was found that copper exhibits a rather high affinity for sulphur, especially at higher temperatures; and attention was called to the possibility that copper when present together with sulphur in liquid steel would tend to lower the chemical activity of sulphur and thus interfere with the desulphurization process. It was clear, however, that the data for the equilibrium between pure copper and pure copper sulphide (Cu2S) could not give any quantitative information about the effect of copper when dissolved in liquid steel. The present work is concerned with the activity of sulphur in the diluted range of the binary iron-sulphur system, and with the influence of small amounts of copper on this sulphur activity. This investigation is in principle based on the same method previously described for the binary metal-sulphur studies;1,2 namely, reaction with hydrogen to form hydrogen sulphide. The equilibrium ratio PH2s/Ph2 in the equilibrium gas mixture is, for a given temperature, directly proportional to the sulphur activity. The activity of sulphur in liquid iron has previously been studied by Chipman and Ta Li,3 White and Skelly,4 and recently by Sherman, Elvander, and Chipman.5 Morris and Williams6 have studied the effect of added silicon, and Kitchener, Bockris and Liberman,7 and recently Morris and Buehl,8 the effect of added carbon on the sulphur activity. In present day steelmaking processes the steel bath contains between 0.01 and 0.1 pct sulphur, and the copper content may be as high as 0.5 pct. The equi-librium gas ratio (H2S/H2) would, for such a low-sulphur content, be too low to be measured with the experimental technique we use. It has been shown by previous investigators that the H2S/H2 ratio is closely proportional to the sulphur content up to about 1 pct sulphur. The sulphur activity at very low-sulphur content can therefore be calculated by linear interpolation between 0 and 1 pct sulphur. In order to show the general trend with increasing sulphur content, the present work has been carried out to about 3.5 pct sulphur. As the effect of copper was assumed to be more a function of the Cu/S ratio than of the absolute copper content, the runs with copper were made for certain constant values for this ratio.

Relationships are derived between average dimensions measured on a polished cross section and the spatial dimensions of particles dispersed as uniform cylinders. The equations are applicable to the measurement of rods or plates without the stipulation that they be extremely thin. QUANTITATIVE analysis of the elements of mi-crostructures has been limited by a lack of knowledge concerning the relationships between observations on plane surfaces and the spatial nature of the structure. This paper is an extension of previous efforts to establish equations suitable for the quantitative investigation of microstructures. The equations derived fill two gaps in the range of particle shapes for which measurements may be required, namely those shapes lying between extremely thin plates and equiaxed particles (approximately spherical), and those intermediate between equiaxed particles and extremely thin rods or needles. In a previous paper' equations were developed relating dimensions measured on a polished cross section to the average spatial dimensions of particles in the form of spheres, extremely thin plates, and extremely thin rods. For extremely thin rods the dimensions measured on a polished cross section were found to depend on the radius only, so that no information concerning the rod lengths or number of rods per unit volume could be obtained from observations on a cross section. In this paper equations are derived relating dimensions measured on a polished cross section to the spatial dimensions of particles in the form of identical cylinders. These equations may be used to evaluate the dimensions of rods, as well as the dimensions of plates, without the stipulation that the plates or rods be extremely thin. The impossibility of evaluating the length of extremely thin rods from planar measurements appears as an increase in the amount of data required for a given precision, as the length-radius ratio increases. Consider a sample containing particles of a phase in the form of cylinders of uniform radius T and height t. If the cylinders are randomly oriented, as in a sufficiently large sample of a fine grained poly-crystalline material, area and lineal analysis may be carried out with parallel cross-sectional planes and lineal traverses. If the cylinders are not randomly oriented, it is necessary to randomize the orientations of the cross-sectional planes and traverse lines. Let a unit cube be cut from the sample, and a cross-section plane be passed through the cube parallel to one of the cube faces. The number of particles N, cut by the cross-sectional plane per unit area is equal to the number of particles N, per unit volume times the probability p1 of a plane intersecting a single randomly positioned and randomly oriented cylinder in the cube. The compositions of coexisting phases in the methane-propane-n-pentane system were determined at 160° and -2 20°F. throughout the two-phase region, at pressures above 500 lb. per sq. in. The experimental results permitted the calculation of gas-liquid equilibrium constants as well as the establishment of the critical behavior of this ternary system. Although many binary paraffin hydrocarbon systems have been investigated, the experimental work relating to the phase behavior of ternary paraffin hydrocarbon mixtures at elevated pressures is relatively scarce, being limited to a study of the meth-ane-propane-PL-pentane system at 100°F.l,2 However, Guter and co-workers have studied the phase behavior of the methane-ethane-ethylene system at relatively low temperatures. Information concerning the phase behavior of ternary systems is of value in predicting the behavior of the components in multicomponent systems, since the influence of pressure, temperature, and concentration may be individually ascertained. In the light of the importance of such information, the study of this ternary system was extended to higher temperatures in order to increase the field of temperature in which the data could be applied. Since all states encountered in this investigation are above the critical temperature of methane, the details of its phase behavior are not of direct significance. The properties of propane in the heterogeneous region were taken from a correlation3 based upon recently published data. The corresponding information for n-pentane was taken from experimentally measured vapor pressures and volumetric data.4 The rnethane-propane system has been studied throughout the two-phase region at temperatures above 70°F.,5 while the phase behavior of the propane-n-pentane system has been established for temperatures above 160°F.6 The volumetric and phase behavior of the methane-72-pentane system has been studied in detai1.7,8 The experimental measurements serve to establish with adequate accuracy the phase behavior of the components and of the constituent binary systems for this ternary system. It is believed that, with the exception of the measurements for the methane-propane system, the uncertainties in the earlier data relating to the pure substances and the binary mixtures are probably less than those associated with the values reported here. Method The methods and apparatus employed in this investigation have been described.137 In principle, the method involved the withdrawal of samples of the coexisting gas and liquid phases from a vessel containing a heterogeneous mixture of methane, propane and n-pentane. The Mather mine of The Negaunee Mine Co. embraces nearly all of Sections 1 and 2, T47N, R27W, within the limits of the cities of Negaunee and Ishpeming on the Marquette iron range of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Operations of the Negaunee Mine Co., the stock of which is jointly owned by Bethlehem Steel Co. and The Cleve-land-Cliffs Iron Co., are under the direction of the latter company. The opening of the Mather mine was described by C. W. Al1en.† Mather " A " shaft was completed to an initial depth of 2352 ft in early 1943. The shaft capacity of over one million tons yearly is in prospect of being realized by orderly development and mining, and sinking of the second or "B" shaft then started in accordance with previous planning. Mather "B," also a vertical shaft, was designed as a twin to Mather "A" shaft and the sinking technique developed at Mather "A" was utilized in "B" shaft operation. Shaft Sinking General Plan An average depth of 16 ft of sand overburden at the shaft site was cleared away by bulldozer, and the shaft approximately 15 by 20 ft in rock opening put down to an initial depth of 87 ft. Mucking of the broken rock to this depth was accomplished by an Insley excavator equipped with a 1/2 yard ca-pacity Owens clamshell bucket. Addition of 200 lb weight to each lip of the clam bucket provided adequate "bite" to dig the broken diorite and jasper rock. Temporary heavy wood bearers were placed across the shaft mouth to support the steel shaft sets which were hung in this initial 87 ft depth, aligned accurately and concreted in place from the lowest set upwards. The permanent steel headframe foundations and three service tunnel openings to the shaft were also concreted in the upper section to the shaft collar. A temporary wood headframe was then erected over the shaft mouth, and initial hoisting machinery assembled consisting of a Lake Shore 12 ft diam single drum grooved for a 1 3/8 in. rope and powered by two 400 hp motors to attain hoisting speed of 1100 fpm. Compressed air was obtained from a Nordberg 2 stage tandem horizontal type with a capacity of 1500 cfm. An enclosed landing platform at the shaft collar was equipped with a rotary dump and pocket for discharge of the rock into a Euclid 15 ton truck. On completing assembly of this equipment and installation of a special cage in the shaft, sinking was resumed on a three shift, six days per week

DEFORMATION bands of surprising regularity are found in large-grained polycrystalline copper after cold-rolling (Fig. I). Individual bands frequently are large enough to permit a determination of their orientation by means of etch pits and an optical goniometer. Measurements have been made on 21 areas in seven different grains, and these, combined with X-ray studies of nine single crystals that had been cold-rolled after mounting in a polycrystal-line block, have contributed to a better understanding of the preferred orientations in rolled copper just as similar studies have for rolled iron' and brass.2.3 Particular attention was given to determining orientations that are stable during rolling and to the manner of fragmentation and rotation of unstable grains. The possible role of twinning was also carefully investigated. The texture of polycrystalline copper after cold-rolling is well established by the pole figures that have been plotted by Schmid and Staffelbach,4 Iweronowa and Schdanow,5 and Brick and Williamson,3 all of which are in substantial agreement. There has been some divergence in the list of individual "ideal" orientations that have been used to describe the texture by these observers and others,6 although the orientation (110) [112]-that is, (110) parallel to the rolling plane and [112] parallel to the rolling direction-is generally recognized as the most prominent orientation and (I12) [111] one of the lesser orientations. Other orientations have been given by some observers as (236) [533], (100) [001], and (I 10) [001]. The texture of copper has also been described as (135) [533].6.1 The sum of these orientations provides a reasonable approximation to the complete pole figure, but it does not follow that these specific orientations are necessarily of fundamental significance, for the choice of indices is arbitrary, within limits. Furthermore, a detailed investigation of the ideal orientations in cold-rolled iron discloses continuous ranges of equally favored positions rather than definite positions of high stability,1 and similarly Brick's observations in a single crystal of a brass2 suggest that all orientations in the range between (110) [113] and (110) [117] are about equally stable. MATERIALS AND METHODS The material used was vacuum-cast electrolytic copper kindly supplied by L. L. Wyman, of the General Electric Co.* Slices 1/2 in. thick and 2 1/2 in. square, cut from the ingot, were rolled with 50 per cent reduction per pass to final thicknesses between 0.02 and 0.04 in., and etched to develop cube-face etch pits suitable for goniometric work.8 The etch was light on some strips and deep in others.

IN 1874, with Mr. H. Y. Attrill, of Baltimore, Md., I made an examination of some property at Goderich with reference to sinking for and mining salt. With this end in view we visited all the wells in the neighborhood, but the information sought being of so unreliable a character I advised the putting down of a borehole on the property. This has since been done, the result of which has lately been published by Dr. T. Sterry Hunt in the Toronto Globe. From this there appears to have been passed through six beds of salt of an aggregate thickness of 123 feet. Rock-salt was known to exist, for, by the boring of existing wells, small crystals had been brought to the surface in the dirt, but no attempt had before been made to obtain a reliable sample or to prove the number and thickness of the beds. The question now remaining for discussion is, shall the present method of obtaining the salt be continued, or shall the beds be won by a shaft in a regular mining fashion, by which means the salt may be gotten in a condition almost ready for the market? The present mode of obtaining salt is by boreholes from 6 inches to 8 inches in diameter drilled to the beds, into which is inserted a pump. The "feeders" of fresh water intersected in drilling the well are allowed to descend on the outside of the pump-tube to the salt beds and there become saturated, when, on use of the pump, brine is obtained for evaporation. In the beginning brine can only be had in limited quantity, but by the daily application of the pump, and the gradual solution of the salt, a larger surface becomes exposed to the action of the fresh water, and a continuous supply of brine is obtained. It will then be understood that the supply of brine is dependent upon the feeders of fresh water intersected in boring the well, which, we are told, have never shown any sign of diminution, and this is the water that must be encountered in sinking a shaft. There are ten wells in operation at Goderich, the most important one to the present project being known as the Hawley Well, located at an elevation a few feet above Lake Huron at the mouth of the river Maitland, at a much lower level and nearer to the proposed shaft than any other well in the district. ANYONE who has been confronted with the problem of predicting the performance of a sand-pump installation is vitally aware of the dearth of precise information that has been published on this important subject. Such data as have been collected are not readily available in a concise and readily usable form, so that many operators would find it a considerable chore to find the pertinent information required to undertake a detailed study. The purpose of this paper is to assemble such established data, correlate them with field experience and outline the factors that must be appraised in the determination of a satisfactory pump installation. The transportation of solids in solution is of vital interest to every mill superintendent and operator, and many of the factors that are involved in this hydraulic problem vary widely from installation to installation, and in some cases even from time to time on any one installation.. These include: type of solids (including shape of particles), size of solids (grind), percentages of fines (slimes), dilution of pulp, contour of pipe line, type of pipe, age of pipe line, effect that diameter of pipe has on characteristic flow conditions, and other factors. Some of these have been fairly well determined by experimental work but many still must be established through interpolating or extrapolating between values that have been derived from known field conditions. Most problems primarily concern the transportation of a definite weight of dry solids from one specific location to another. The type of material, shape of particles, grind and percentages of fines are established and very often the dilution at which the solids must be handled as well. The problem then evolves into a determination of the size, type and contour of the pipe line and the net effective head against which the pump must operate. Before discussing the determination of the head, it might be well to review the interrelationship between the pump discharge (capacity), the head developed by the pump and the pump speed, which will apply to any centrifugal pump installation. EFFECT OF PUMP SPEED Basically, the head developed by a centrifugal pump varies as the square of the pump speed and the discharge as the first power of the speed. However, even at constant speed a centrifugal pump will operate over a wide range of capacities, depending upon the head that must be developed to deliver the liquid or pulp to the end of the pipe line. This is shown graphically in Fig. I. If the pump in question is being driven at a constant speed of 900 r.p.m. it will deliver 500 U. S. gal. per min. against a head of 56 ft., 800 U. S. gal. per min. against a head of 50 ft., and so on. In other words, at this speed the capacity of the pump will be determined and limited by

LOMBARDI, Berkeley, Cal.-Mr. Bell, I would ask you to state before the meeting what you said to me the other day, about the final recovery of oil from oil sands that have become inundated with water. A. F. L. BELL, San. Francisco, Cal: In stating my opinion, I give it with certain qualifications. In the Kern field, and possibly in some others, I think we will eventually get all the oil out, whether the water comes in or not, since it is peculiarly constructed, being in the form of a partial dome. In 1909, while I was field manager of the Associated Oil Co., I installed some large air compressors to handle the water. At that time the oil had migrated to the higher and more shallow portions of the field, because the water had inundated the deeper sections. The result was that the shallow districts within the center of the dome were in many, cases producing as much or more oil per well than the deeper wells. And in the inundated sections the water had slowly spread over large areas, so that nothing but water was pumped from them. Under these conditions, we decided to pump the wet. well with air, and installed four 2,000-cu. ft. compressors. The air was compressed and forced into the wet wells at, about 250 lb. pressure. Shortly the inundated district that had produced almost all water and only about 150 bbl. of oil a day increased its production to over 2,000 bbl. of oil per day. It was not-long before, we noticed that the production of the shallow territory was falling off to such an extent that in many cases the wells were abandoned; at the same time the area of the water-inundated district was greatly reduced, showing that when the water pressure was reduced the oil migrated back to the lower depth. The wells which at first had had the air jets put into them finally produced so much oil that we had to take the 'air jets out and return to the use of the beam pump, because it is not commercially feasible to pump, an oil of 14° gravity with air. To handle such oil profitably by air, it must carry with it 50 to 90 per cent. of water. The results have led me to believe that oil monoclines, where there is a gradual rise to a certain point, or in plunging anticlines, even though water gets into oil sands, eventually we get the larger percentage of the oil. However, the man with a small acreage in the deeper sections may find some morning that his oil has gone, another man in some higher portion of the district having gotten it.

THE usual procedure in determining the magnetic susceptibilities of rocks and formations has been to take samples in the field and measure their volume susceptibilities in the laboratory, using one of numerous methods available. In none of these methods is the measuring instrument suited for field use. Usually the sample is pulverized; sometimes it is machined to a desired size and shape, and in one method' a cast of the sample is made and the susceptibility of the rock compared with that of a material of known susceptibility of the same size and shape, made from the cast of the original sample. Some writers assert that the difference in susceptibility of a rock sample in powdered and solid forms is negligible, and while doubtless this is true in many cases there are others in which the difference becomes appreciable. Further, the susceptibility of a small specimen may differ from that of the rock from which it is taken, owing to the stresses produced by the hammering or other forces used to obtain the sample and shape it for testing. Wilson2 found that an individual specimen of granite had about the same susceptibility in the solid as in the powdered form, but that pieces from different parts of the rock varied as much as 750 per cent because of unequal distribution of magnetite. The most accurate value of susceptibility would, obviously, be obtained from averaging a number of tests on the undisturbed rock instead of from one or two samples. No such procedures have been published, to the writer's knowledge. It is the purpose of this paper to describe a method by which susceptibilities of rocks may be determined in place by means of a portable instrument. METHOD The principle involved in this new method is that there is a change in inductance of a coil due to the presence in its magnetic field of a paramagnetic or diamagnetic medium. In this case, however, the windings of the coil do not enclose any part of the rock under test. Instead, the coil is circular, being small in cross section as compared to its radius, and consists of several hundred turns of fine wire. It is placed flat on the rock of which the susceptibility is to be measured. Thus only part of the magnetic field from the coil penetrates the rock under test. The relation between the change in field strength or inductance of the coil and the susceptibility of the medium will be developed later. To measure the change in the inductance of the coil due to the presence of a magnetic material an alternating-current inductance bridge was chosen. DESCRIPTION OF APPARATUS Of many alternating-current bridge methods applicable,3 the one shown in Fig. I (Owen's bridge') was adopted for its simplicity and sensitivity. FLOTATION tests, from which the flowsheet for the concentrator was determined, were made in a pilot mill at Chuquicamata and later comparative testing of full size flotation cells was done at the Andes Copper Mining Co. concentrator in Potrerillos. The principal sulphide copper mineral is chalcocite with varying amounts of covellite, enargite, and chalcopyrite. The oxidized portion is principally antlerite, a green basic copper sulphate. The gangue minerals include quartz, sericite, pyrite, feldspars and kaolin. Chuquicamata pit ores have proved to be hard grinding. The results of the flotation and metallurgical work prove that good extraction and concentrate grade can be obtained under a rather wide range of conditions. Metallurgy In general the metallurgy of the ore requires a fairly close control of the grind to the primary rougher flotation and of the regrind of the primary rougher concentrate before cleaning. Regrinding is necessary to reduce the insoluble content of the final concentrate since a large part of the middling combinations are between the copper and silica minerals. The alkalinity of the pulps can vary between wide limits and control of the percent solids gives the desired grind. Alkalinity Control Arroyo Salado water is supplied to the concentrator head tanks. It contains about 5000 ppm of salts but test work shows no deleterious effect. Actually this water permits a decrease of as much as 1 lb of lime per ton of ore as compared to San Pedro water, which is used for leaching oxide ore. About one quarter of the water flow through the concentrator will be new water from the reservoir. The remainder will be reclaimed from the thickeners. For primary grinding and rougher flotation, new and reclaimed water are combined in the head tanks. To avoid erratic results, only new water is used in the regrind system. Milk of lime is added to the rod mill feed chute to obtain the maximum benefit of mixing with the ore. This protects the equipment from corrosion due to entrained acids and soluble copper salts. Lime consumption is 3 to 5 lb per ton of ore. Grinding and Flotation The six bin gates over each belt feeder are opened in controlled combination and sequence to keep a live bed of ore in the bin to prevent arching and to obtain mixing. The milk of lime added ahead of the rod mill is regulated to suit rougher flotation requirements. The primary promoter reagent, Aerofloat 238, is added to the 10-mesh discharge of the rod mill as it is laundered to the ball mill scoop box. The classifier overflow is regulated to produce a grind of about 12 to 15 pct +65 mesh and 60 pct -200 mesh. A secondary promoter Z-4 (aml zanthate) and the pine oil frother are added in the overflow launder where a pH of 10 to 11 is maintained. Comparatively heavy beds of froth on the

ark' observed some years ago that collector-coating reactions with xanthates and with fatty acids clearly follow paths parallel to those prescribed by the familiar mass-action law for reactions in dilute solutions. He proposed, therefore, the logical hypothesis that they are governed by the solubility-product principle. However, he went astray in the application of his proposal to collector coating by overlooking the fact that coating involves a heterogeneous reaction. A mistaken concept of the meaning of the word adsorption also entered. Wark thought that the concentration of metallic ion that must be used in setting up the solubility-product equation for the coating reaction was that which could be obtained by solution of the mineral. Since this is very low for sulphide ores, and since the amount of the collector ion necessary for coating produces an extremely low concentration, the resulting ion-concentration product, under conditions when coating occurs, is much lower than that which would indicate a saturated solution of the collector-coating compound. Hence he was forced to the position that the solubility product governing the coating is much smaller than the standard solubility product. To justify this position it was necessary to postulate a coating mechanism that did not obey the ordinary laws of chemical reaction. This Wark did by adopting the concept that adsorption is a property of matter, rather than merely a more or less ephemeral local concentration thereof. Thus he says (p. 142 of ref. I): "Adsorption is not a purely physical property of the solid surface, for the specific nature of the adsorbed molecule or ion is important." The result was that he destroyed the great potential utility of his postulate by tying it to this erroneous concept in the words (pp. 142, 143): "It will be obvious that the adsorption solubility product is less than the normal solubility product." The writers have found quantitatively in the case of galena and potassium ethyl xanthate, and semiquantitatively in the case of covellite and the same collector, that the coating reaction does follow the mass-action law to the extent that coating occurs when the ordinary solubility product of the coating compound is exceeded, and that coating does not take place under the reverse conditions. In the course of the investigation leading to the establishment of this fact it was necessary to work with xanthate concentrations so low (down to 0.0004 mg. per liter), that very long conditioning times, and bubble-contact times of as much as 16 hr. were necessary sometimes to follow the reactions. The results have led to some illuminating conclusions as to necessary collector concentrations in normal flotation operations, and the action of the frothing agent in connection therewith' The experimental work comprised accurate determination of the standard solubility product of lead ethyl xanthate, development of a much less laborious
