Western Talc Company, Inc., with headquarters in Los Angeles, Calif., has just completed an extensive modernization and expansion program at its talc mine near Tecopa, Calif., and at its talc and clay mills at Dunn Siding, Calif., the nearest rail shipping point to the mine. The basic objective of the program was to provide facilities necessary to produce 300 tpd of a wide range of ground talc and clay grades for the ceramic, paint, paper, rubber and other industries. In the planning of the program every effort was made to provide a system which would permit a high degree of quality control and uniformity of the finished products, along with efficient operation. Several years ago, R. T. Vanderbilt Co., Inc. purchased Western Talc Co. after a comprehensive investigation of its properties, including an extensive diamond drilling campaign. Western Talc's properties embraced a number of claims in the Resting Springs mining district in the northern part of San Bernardino Co. and the southern part of Inyo Co., Calif., some seven miles southeast of the town of Tecopa. Operations by the original company were started on a small scale in 1913 and production from that date to the time of purchase of the company by Vanderbilt is estimated at 250,000 tons. The major part of this output was sold to the ceramic wall tile industry.

Since 1915 many papers and books have covered industrial applications of X-rays from various angles. Two of the more recent are a paper by Fink and Archer, which describes in detail the technique of radiography, and a paper by Clark2, which embraces the whole field of X-ray metallogmphy. This paper, therefore, is confined to work of the X-ray Laboratory of the Western Electric Co., which naturally divides into two categories: radiography and diffraction patterns of various types. Radiography Radiography is the field in which the application of X-rays has had most general appeal among the industries which produce or use metals and alloys. Equipment permitting the examination of heavy sections of metals less permeable than aluminum or other light alloys requires apparatus capable of generating hard X-rays over a considerable period of time. The equipment used in the work presented in this paper is practically identical with that described by Fink and Archer in their paper on radiography in industry and is easily capable of penetrating 1/8 in. of lead. Radiography is used in two major groups of problems: (1) in the development of cquipment and tools and (2) in studies of materials. So far there has been no instance in which the use of radiography for routine inspection is justified. This is partly due to the fact that the manufacture of telephone apparatus involves the production of many identical parts by standardized procedures and equipment that has had development and trial before being put on a regular production basis. It is during this stage of development of equipment and tools that radiography has been used to particular advantage.

Although there is now an extensive literature on the bleaching clays, not a great deal of material is to be found concerning the geological features of these deposits and their bearing on problems of exploration and development. At the same time, chemical and crystallographic research on the clay minerals during the past few years has laid a suitable foundation upon which to base conclusions of economic value drawn from field observations. All of the criteria and deductions herein presented are based upon extensive field work by the senior author, both in the United States and Canada, and when .subjected to the ultimate tests of development and exploitation they have held up remarkably well, despite the fact that many of these conclusions apparently have not been reviewed in the literature heretofore. The nomencelature of the bleaching clays is rather confusing in the light of present-day commercial standards and has even led to litigation.'" The old term "fuller's earth" is largely based upon trade usage and the definition of the term therefor? is dependent upon the changing standards of commerce. For statistical purposes the Bureau of Mines8' classes as "fuller's earth" all natural bleaching or filtering claylike materials that possess high adsorptive capacity without previous chemical treatment or activation. Conversely, the so-called activated or acid activated clays are now generally recognized as any clay mineral or mixture of the clay minerals whose adsorptive capacity has been developed to commercial standards by chemical or physical treatment. Therefore, without attempting to propose any additions to the nomenclaturc: of bleaching clays, this paper will refer to naturally adsorptive clays and activable clays, respecbively, for the two types indicated.

It has been shown elsewhere1 that the data on the rates of diffusion in solid metals are fragmentary and in many cases unacceptable. As a result, relatively little is known concerning the factors determining rates of diffusion and the variations in these rates with temperature. The first form of Fick's law (equation 1 below), in which the diffusion coefficient D is assumed invariant with composition, has been recognized for many years as only an approximation. The differential equation representing the second form of Fick's law (equation 4 below) has only recently been integrated by Matano,2 and unfortunately only in cases where a full diffusion-penetration curve (concentration-distance curve) has been obtained can the Matano solution be applied. The proper analysis of diffusion data is thus confined to the data of Grube and Jedele and of Jedele. 8 These data are essentially for one temperature alone and do not furnish any information on the variation of the activation heat of diffusion, Q, with concentration: no information exists on the variation of Q with concentration within a single solid solution field. 11 Much of the argument concerning the properties of metals that determine D and Q has been drawn from data in which variations of the quantities with concentration are unknown, for these data have been taken from experiments that could not furnish this information. Speculation concerning the properties of metals that may be effective in determining D and Q on the basis of data in which the chosen D and Q values are averages over wide concentration ranges of values at particular concentrations, ranges often of 100 per cent, is likely not to be fruitful.

The properties of the company lie within the Pachuca district, State of Hidalgo, Mexico, connected by three railway lines with Mexico City, 55 miles southwest, and by two lines with Vera Cruz, 250 miles southeast. The ores were formerly divided by sorting into two classes, smelting and milling, the former averaging about 2 oz. gold and 335 oz. silver, the latter 0.12 oz. gold and 23 oz. silver. The smelting ores were sold to custom plants, principally the American Smelting & Refining Co. at Aguascalientes. The milling ores were treated by the patio process at the Guadalupe Hacienda, at Pachuca. This patio was probably the largest in existence at the time and continued in active operation up to March, 1910. In January, 1910, the mines and patio were sold to English interests, represented by Camp Bird Limited. Two new companies were formed, the Compania de Santa Gertrudis, S. A., to operate the mines, and the Compania Beneficiadora de Pachuca, S. A., to build and operate a custom cyanide milling plant. (Pig. 1.) Geology The historical geology of the Pachuca district is described by Fred J. Pope as follows: 1. The most recent sedimentary rooks in the district belong to the Cretaceous period. 2. The Cretaceous rocks were penetrated by large intrusions of ande-site (referred to hereafter as primary andesite) which occur as elliptical dome-shaped masses, striking northwest-southeast. These andesite bodies are from 8 to 15 miles long and from 6 to 10 miles wide. 3. A period of erosion during which the contour of the andesite domes was changed. 4. Andesite flows (secondary andesite) which rest unconformably on the primary andesites.

Discussion of the Paper by C. E. Corson, which was presented at the London Meeting, July, 1906. (See Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 11, September, pp. 725 to 742.) ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass. (communication to the Secretary*) :-On close examination I think it will be found that the evidence by which Mr. Corson claims to have shown the inaccuracy of a statement I made a few years ago, is far from convincing. This statement is:- "Hot work, as such, has no influence upon the structure of the metal. Indirectly, however, by retarding crystallization until a lower temperature is reached, it may influence its structure most decidedly ; but the same results could be accomplished by heat-treatment alone, i.e., by reheating the unworked metal to the temperature from which the unworked piece was allowed to cool undisturbedly." The Metallographist, vol. ii., p. 267 (under the head of "Changes of Structure Brought About by Work"). Of the two pieces of steel tested by Mr. Corson, one was worked and finished at a " cherry red " and ' the other reheated to a cherry red, and the assumption was made that, in both cases the temperature was about 715° C., although no pyrometric device was used to record it. The possibility of considerable difference in temperature alone is so great as to invalidate Mr. Corson's inferences. The apparent temperature, moreover, is so close to the critical point of the steel as to render any conclusion very hazardous. -It is not at all evident that the annealed piece was reheated past its critical point, in which case reheating would have had practically no effect. Nor is it evident that the piece forged and finished at a cherry red was not actually below the critical point, which, by definition, I have called cold worked. Mr. Corson's explanation that " Under proper reheating, on the other hand, the steel becomes a solid solution from which crystals of approximate homogeneity and uniform size may separate" will not be readily understood.

The production of lime by the burning or calcination of limestone, including all varieties from true dolomites and magnesian limestones to high-calcium types, continues as one of the essential basic industries. In 1937, a total of 4,124,165 tons of lime valued at approximately $30,091,000 was produced in the United States.' The importance of any contribution to our knowledge on the mechanism of the lime-burning process is, therefore, obvious. The burning of limestone has been practiced since the earliest days of our civilization, and the literature on the various phases of the industry is voluminous. Calcination of the various types of limestone has been studied by many previous investigators, but some points require additional research. Each occurrence of limestone provides an opportunity for specific investigation, because the characteristics of stones in different localities vary. Knibbs13 has given an excellent discussion of available data on the theory of lime and magnesia burning. The thermal dissociation of calcium carbonate has been studied more recently by Johnstonr2 Smyth and Adams,3 Ralston et al.,4 Furnas,6 Potapenko,6 and Southard and Royster.7 As a result of these investigations the dissociation temperature at atmospheric pressure has been established as 894" to 898' C. The dissociation of dolomite and magnesite, although studied by several investigators,4,6,8 still requires clarification by additional data. The calcination of limestone was studied for a twofold purpose: (I) to extend our information on the mechanism of the lime-burning process and (2) to standardize the conditions for calcination of high-calcium and dolomitic limestones for subsequent hydration tests on the lime.

FOR many years the disk-type and cloth-covered drum filters have found widest application in liquid-solids separation, which uses continuous filters. The disk type is less expensive, occupies less floor space per square foot of filtration area, and re- quires negligible down time for filter media changing. However, because filter cloth is billowed out by the blowback in the cake discharge, it is very short-lived if the scraper blades are set too close. Consequently cake weight is very important in assisting cake discharge, which normally necessitates a minimum cake thickness of 3/8 to ½ in. Also, the vertical position of the disks eliminates the possibility of efficient cake washing for removal of soluble values. The disk-type filter is generally limited, therefore, to applications that require no cake washing and form relatively thick cakes within the normal range of filter cycle times. The conventional cloth-covered drum filter is a more flexible unit, permitting wider variation in the percentage of cycle time devoted to cake formation, dewatering, or washing, as required by the application. Thinner filter cakes can be discharged be- cause a horizontal line across the filter medium at the location of the scraper blade is equidistant from the edge of the blade at all points. The scraper blade therefore may be set a short distance from the filter medium or, where wire winding is not used, a floating scraper can be utilized so that the contour of the cloth can be followed. The drum filter is generally employed when there are difficult filtering slurries with resultant thin cakes or when cake washing to recover soluble values must be practiced.

THE coal-fields of Missouri, situated hi the northern and western portion of the State, are distributed, in whole or in part, over 57 counties, embracing an area estimated by Mr. Broad-head to be practically 23,000 sq. miles, including small detached beds and outliers in St. Louis, St. Charles, Lincoln and Warren counties in the eastern part of the State. This area includes about 8,000 sq. miles of Upper or Barren Measures, 2,000 sq. miles of exposed Middle, and 12,420 sq. miles of exposed Lower Measures. In a general way, the Missouri coal-field is bounded on the east by an imaginary line entering the northern part of the State just east of the 92c1 Meridian and passing across the State in a southwesterly direction to a point on the Kansas-Missouri line a little below the southern boundary of Barton county. An important part of the field overlaps this line and extends down the northern side of the Missouri river, under¬lying the greater part of Randolph, Howard, Boone and Audrain counties. In all, 34 counties produced coal during the year 1903. Fig. 1 shows the position of the coal-fields in Missouri. GEOLOGICAL FEATURES. The Coal Measure formations, all of the Carboniferous age, rest unconformably upon the rocks of the sub-Carboniferous or Mississippian series, and, in some cases, upon the rocks of the Devonian and Silurian ages. From their outcrop on the eastern and southeastern borders of the field, the Measures dip west to northwest at the rate of 10 ft. per mile, reaching a maximum thickness estimated by

The slackening of activity in oil development in Colombia, which was noted in 1931, continued throughout 1932. In the producing fields output was further curtailed and active operations were substantially reduced. Exploratory work was at the lowest level reached in a good many years. Applications and Contracts for New Concessions The areas covered by the four applications accepted by the government in 1931 for concessions on national lands were not finally awarded the applicants, although the indications are that these will be granted during the coming year. iln application of Sr. Luciano Restrepo for a concession of 49,232 hectares located on the north side of the Sogamoso River in the Municipality of Bolivar, Department of Santander, was accepted by the Government toward the end of the year. The Government is expected to take action toward granting or denying this concession during 1933. The Richmond Petroleum Co. (Standard Oil Co. of California subsidiary) leased from Manuel Davila P. and Eduardo Villar a private tract known as the Fierro Arriba and Fierro Abajo lands located in the municipality of Victoria, Department of Caldas, near Honda. The terms of the lease provide for a cash rental and royalty. The company is allowed 10 years in which to start exploratory work. The lease covers a period of 15 years and is subject to renewal by periods of similar duration. Richmond Petroleum Co. The Richmond Petroleum Co. finally abandoned its Repelon No. 3 at 4312 ft., owing to drilling difficulties. No new hole was made on this well during the year. This was the only active drilling project in the country outside the Tropical Oil Company's concession, and with its abandonment all wildcat activities in the country ceased. A. U. Seybolt (General Electric Research Laboratory)— As pointed out in an earlier paper,41 it appears to be very difficult to nucleate Si3N4 in Si-Fe of silicon content up to around 5 pet. Therefore, one observes, as did Pearce, that equilibrations with nitrogen gas yield only nitrogen in solid solution at temperatures above about 700°C, or, as Pearce found, 770°C. Evidently, the free energy of formation of Si3N4 only becomes high enough at -770°C to overcome the reluctance of Si3N4 to nucleate. However, as mentioned in Ref. 41, if some Si3N4 is first formed by a mixture of ammonia and hydrogen, one can then replace this gas mixture by nitrogen gas, and either increase or decrease the amount of Si3N4 present at any temperature by suitable adjustment of nitrogen pressure: that is, to equilibrate with Si3N4. In the equilibration experiments cited in Ref. 41, equilibrium was approached from both sides, and it was found that samples up to 944oC, at least, were in equilibrium with Si3N4. Higher temperatures were not employed, as this would have necessitated a redesign of the apparatus for using nitrogen pressures in excess of 1 atm. To summarize, the results of Pearce's experiments and those of Ref. 41 cannot be directly compared because two quite different equilibria were studied. Therefore, the statement by Pearce on p. 1398 indicating apparent error in Ref. 41 is unjustified. M. L. Pearce (author's reply)— There was limited evidence obtained in the current investigation which would indicate that excessive "supercooling" did not occur. Unit coal calorific values represent a close approach to pure coal values; they possess characteristics theoretically inherent in the latter values. They are essentially uniform in the same seam for areas possessing essentially uniform geological environment. They are higher in older than in younger coals in most cases, and in deeper than in shallower coals. In general, they display characteristics closely in accordance with expectation assuming that they are essentially indices of rank. Because it possesses these characteristics, the unit coal value is essentially a standard value, characteristic of each bed in each local region. Hence it can be used as a basis for determining the accuracy of results in newly established laboratories, or when new equipment is installed, or in checking the results of different laboratories, or even in determining the character of coal as mined or prepared if ash, moisture and sulfur values are known. DISCUSSION (A. C. Callen presiding) R. P. Hunson,§ Wayland, Ky. (written discussion).—One of the interesting observatioris made by the authors is that there is a more or less definite correlation between unit coal calorific values and the geological environment of the coal bed. It is very interesting to note that, in general, the unit B.t.u. value increases with the increase in the probable original depth of burial, and that each seam tends to increase in calorific value toward the areas of diastrophic instability. It is generally conceded that Parr's formula, for determining unit coal values, is about as accurate as any formula subsequently proposed for the same purpose. In his formula, Professor Parr did not differentiate between the sulfur present as iron pyrites and that present as organic sulfur. However, the practical application of the formula has shown that this is of little consequence. I agree with the authors that unit coal calorific values are useful ill determining the accuracy of calorimetric determinations, and in determining the character of the

In an earlier study at this laboratory,' the authors investigated the solid solubility of holmium in copper, silver, and gold, and also the melting point of the first eutectic on the noble-metal-rich side in these systems. In a more recent study of the solubility of rare-earth metals in gold at this laboratory. Rider, Gschneidner, and McMasters2 noted that the reported eutectic temperature in the Ho-Au system was lower than the corresponding eutectics in systems of dysprosium and erbium with gold. A redetermination of the eutectic temperature in the Ho-Au system with the same alloy used in the original study showed the eutectic temperature to be 810°C instead of 778°C as originally reported. (The eutectic temperatures in the Ho-Ag and Ho-Cu systems were also redetermined and were found to be 795" and 864°C compared to 787° and 868°C, respectively, which were reported originally.) Since this large change in eutectic temperature made the solubility data appear questionable, new alloys were prepared, heat-treated, and examined metallographically. The procedure of sample preparation and heat treatment used in the original work' was followed except longer heat treatments were used ranging from 7 days at 600°C to 6 hr at 900°C. The results obtained are shown in Fig. 1. There is good agreement between the two studies in the maximum solubility of holmium in gold. Since the slope of the solvus is less pronounced in the present study, the extrapolation to 550°C shows a solubility of 1.6 wt pct Ho in gold compared with 1.0 wt pct in the original work. T has been proposed1 on the basis of slip and flow I- that the ideal deformation texture of cold rolled face-centered cubic metals is (110) [112]. As pointed out recently by Brick,' this theory does not account for the difference between the pole figures for cold rolled copper and 70-30 alpha brass, which develop strikingly different spreads from the ideal orientations. It does suggest that the pole figures might be similar for these two metals if they are rolled sufficiently. This has been found to be the case for cold drawn wire.' Experimental Procedure: Four inch sections of cast cakes of copper and 70-30 alpha brass were obtained through the courtesy of the Bridgeport Brass Co. Pieces from these cakes were cold straight rolled 99.993 pct reduction in thickness with the assistance of the Remington Arms Co., Bridgeport, Conn., and by the use of pack rolling. Pole figures were made using the X ray camera and techniques described by Brick.' These pole figures were not significantly different from those previously published for the same materials rolled 98 pct. Eight thicknesses of this strip were then pack rolled. This material failed completely and extensively in tension as shown in fig. 1, developing wavy transverse fractures and bulges. No further work could be done on these samples. Summary: Within the range of this experiment, no attainable amount of cold rolling would cause the pole figures of cold rolled copper and 70-30 brass to become similar, in spite of the fact that such a similarity is predicted by theory.' Discussion of the paper of L. O. HOWARD, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 91, July, 1914, pp. 1785 to 1790. E. P. MATHEWSON, Anaconda, Mont.-I would like to add a few words of praise on Mr. Howard's work at the Old Dominion. Mr. Howard has given this particular converter shell his personal attention, and the results are shown in the figures given. Similar converter shells, a little different in shape and of about the same size, have been tried in many plants throughout the United States. The results have been highly satisfactory, but there is no shell of the size of the one described by Mr. Howard that has given anything like the results that Mr. Howard's shell has given. I know of larger shells that have given very good service, and are still in operation, and require very little repair. The main thing about the whole process of using the basic lining in copper converting is to keep the temperature within reasonable bounds, particularly not to get the furnace too hot. If it is overheated a little bit, for say half an hour, an entire lining may be ruined. It is very easy to keep the temperature regulated 'if the mass is large. If you have a large mass in your converter you can easily prevent it from getting over-heated, and that is the big argument in favor of the extra large converters. Of course, there is a limit to what a plant can turn out in the way of matte. Very few plants can supply matte sufficient to keep a converter of 20 ft. in diameter in operation constantly, but the 20-ft. converter is very much superior to the 12-ft. converter in easy handling and absolute control of the temperature. I think Mr. Howard is to be congratulated on the excellent showing he has made.
