FLUORSPAR is a nonmetallic mineral aggregate or mass containing a sufficient quantity of fluorite (CaF2) to be of commercial interest. It has only moderate value per unit of weight and its cost as a percentage of the cost of finished consumer products is nearly negligible. Nevertheless, it has wide and great industrial importance. In periods of national emergency it is a mineral without which many very necessary manufacturing processes would be greatly handicapped; a few could not exist. Fluorite contains 51.1 pct calcium and 48.9 pct fluorine. Industrial grades of fluorspar prepared for the consumer normally contain from 85 to 98 pct fluorite, depending on the use. The ores may contain as little as 30 pct fluorite, depending on many factors such as accessibility to transportation and markets, character of ore, and prices. Fluorite is a lustrous, glasslike mineral, generally translucent to transparent; it may be clear and colorless or range in color from slightly bluish through various shades of violet, amethyst, purple, green, and yellow. It crystallizes in the isometric system and possesses perfect octahedral cleavage. Commonly it occurs in masses of very pure crystal- line material with aggregates of cubical crystals in open spaces, but - it is also found in fine to coarse granular form. Banded veins and masses with fibrous, radiating structure occur locally. It is usually found associated more or less intimately with other minerals and rocks, from which it must be separated for commercial use. The specific gravity of fluorite is 3.18 and the hardness is 4 in the Mohs scale, compared with 7 for quartz and 3 for calcite. It is distinguished from calcite by its failure to effervesce with dilute hydrochloric acid. Heated with sulphuric acid, it gives off fumes of hydro- fluoric acid, which etch glass.22,25,33.34,35.41

THE Committee on the Elimination of Waste in Industry, of the Federated American Engineering Societies, in its report says that "Waste in -industry is attributable to four causes: 1. Low production, caused by faulty management, of materials, plant, equipment, and men; 2. Interrupted production caused by idle materials, idle plants, and idle equipment; 3. Restricted production intentionally caused by ,owners, managers, or labor; 4. Lost production caused by ill-health, physical defects and industrial accidents. The committee sent out elaborate questionnaires, and in them divided the responsibility into Manage-ment, Labor, and Outside Contracts. These question-naires showed that in the different industries examined the responsibility of Management was from 50 to 80 per cent. and of Labor from 9 to 28 per cent. The percentage of responsibility that Management was held accountable for was much larger than any of us supposed. However, when this question is studied, we realize how necessary it is to select, in the first instance, suitable personnel, in the form of directors, managers, heads of departments, experts, etc. We would like to -believe that the percentage of responsibility of Management for waste in the mining business was less than that quoted above, but there are so many mining properties started up and operated by men of no experience in such lines, and there have been so many improvements in late years in mining and metallurgical methods not taken advantage of, that we can not believe that. the percentage will vary much from that already quoted. . There seems to be a well-established belief that there is an indescribable something in the appearance of gold-quartz not to be learned from books, that enables those who are fortunate enough to have acquired the power to recognize this characteristic, to pronounce at once that a certain quartz will or will not pay. The stronger this claim is made, the more certain is the claimant to be one of the self-styled practical miners. After several years spent among the gold-mines of California with practical and professional gold-miners, I have come to the conclusion that very few care to risk an opinion on a piece of quartz until some of it has been "horned out." Nevertheless, there is what the miners call a " kindly " appearance, that is more often followed by good results than is a vitreous, water-wet-looking quartz. A dark, resinous quartz seems to be most in favor, but there are so many exceptions that even quartz as " white as a hound's tooth " produces gold in some mines.. The ribbon-quartz, a laminated variety, separated by thin talc or chlorite partings, has a well-known good name. The slides of rich quartz specimens show that this parallelism is a microscopical characteristic of the only macroscopical distinction that, as a rule, these quartzes show. This is shown by Nos. 12 and 13, photographs of the richest quartz, that averaged $65 per pound. It is noticeable, also, in Nos. 7 and 9, and others. Dr. Hensoldt, of Columbia College, who prepared, excellently, a large number of my slides, and whom I have to thank for descriptions and suggestions, says of Nos. 12 and 13: "This variety of quartz differs considerably, microscopically, from the others of your locality, and is, in more than one respect, remarkable. Of late considerable experimental and theoretical interest has been shown in the rates of transformation from a single phase, usually a supercooled solid solution, into one or more phases. Such reactions may involve both diffusion and transformation of the major constituent, as in iron alloys, or it may simply involve diffusion, as in superstructure formation and in age-hardening systems. Most of the work has been confined to ferrous alloy1-9† although two investigations have been made on copper alloys10*". That such work may be of considerable practical importance has been demonstrated by Bain12, by the workers at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut fur Eisen-for~chung'13, 14, and by the everyday use of precipitation and age-hardening principles15. Experiments in this country have generally followed Davenport and Bain's technique of rapid supercooling followed by isothermal treatment. In Germany16, 17 the work has been extended to the study of the influence of accurately controlled and measured rates of cooling. The work on steel indicates that there are two subcritical temperature ranges where reaction starts sooner after quenching and proceeds at a more rapid rate than at other temperatures. At suberitical temperatures above Ar" (temperature of martensite formation) where reaction is dependent upon atomic migration there is a period of time of which the length depends upon the alloy content and the temperature, before which no reaction has been detected. Davenport and Bain' find that different sorts of atoms in solid solution in gamma iron affect the length of this " prereaction" period differently, manganese probably being the most effective in lengthening it. It is very difficult to believe that nothing occurs within these "prereaction" regions, for if this were so there is no reason why any reaction at all should be observed. Measures appropriate for the control of the silicosis hazard in mining cannot be formulated precisely, but sufficient knowledge1-l9 has accumulated during the past quarter century to permit the suggestion of useful, though partly empirical, rules for its alleviation. The industrial hygienist today recognizes that the peril incurred by the inhalation of harmful dust is a function of two variable factors—the degree of harmful exposure and the specific susceptibility of the exposed individual to pulmonary injury. Control of the danger arising out of prolonged contact with pernicious airborne particulate matter is consequently best exercised by influencing both of these recognized variables. Obviously the problem has two broad aspects—one, medical; the other within the province of the engineer. I—Factors Comprising Degree of Individual Susceptibility Thorough investigations conducted among miners who have labored for years in the presence of recognized silicosis hazards usually reveal an impressive difference in the injury incurred by men whose exposure to dust has been nearly identical. After a quarter century underground, one individual is short of breath and incapacitated with miners' complaint, while a fellow workman suffers no pulmonary embarrassment and is in good health. Physicians ascribe this oft-observed difference in reaction to individual susceptibility and express a universal regret when they deplore the fate that chose to make the predisposed youth a miner rather than a farmer. To trust the health of miners to fate at the present time is even more unfortunate, because many of the factors that influence man's susceptibility to dust are known, and can be accurately determined by competent medical methods. Among the most important factors comprising susceptibility to injury by dust are the anatomical peculiarities of the individual's respiratory mechanism, his physiological response to the inhalation of dust, his previous dust, exposure, the existence of pulmonary infections or other pathological processes in his lungs, his age,

The phenomena of liquation in steel or iron ingots of all sizes, but naturally to greatest extent in the heaviest ingots, have been noticed ever since the commencement on a large scale of the Besse mer and open-hearth manufactures; but they have been studied with care during the last few years only. The English and the Ameri cans were the first to publish the results of investigation upon phe nomena of this clam, to which they have given the name of segregation. Historical. Passing by that which has been written concerning the segregation observed in gray pig-iron, of which instances were given by Karsten, we shall confine ourselves here to that which is known of this subject with exclusive reference to ingot steel and iron. Mr. H. M. Howe, of Boston, in his Metallurgy of Steel, the most complete and well-arranged treatise upon steel, gives a resume of observations, with the results of numerous analyses, bearing upon the phenomena of segregation. According to Tchernoff (with whom we discussed this question at length in 1878, in connection with the cast-steel plates of large dimensions designed for the Italian fleet, which we showed him at Terre-Noire), Kalakoutsky called attention in 1866 to the lack of homogeneity in Bessemer ingots, especially when cast in sand. Our own attention had been called to the phenomena of liquation in 1868 by a somewhat surprising fact which appeared in almost every one of a number of steel-rail ingots coming from the works of Messrs. Pierre and Emile Martin at Sireuil, to be rolled at TerreNoire. The classic Siez~erts' technique has been employed to determine the solubility of oxygen in liquid pure silver and the effect on the oxygen solubility of solute metal additions to liquid silver. The results indicate that oxygen deviates slightly from Sieverts' law in pure silver as = 3.9. Gold, platinum, md palladium decrease the solubility of oxygen in silver. First-order free energy, enthalpy, md entropy interaction coefficients are determined from the data. An important aspect in the establishment of the formalisms to be applied to represent the thermody-namic behavior of components of solutions is the accuracy of the experimentally determined thermody-namic properties. Wagner developed the first-order free energy interaction coefficient.' Recent papers2'3 extend the treatment formally to other thermodynamic properties and define the second- and higher-order interaction coefficients. A current communication4 considers in some depth the requirements and limitations imposed because of experimental error on the use of several formalisms now under active consideration in the field. This communication reports the results of an experimental study of the behavior of oxygen in liquid silver alloys that was carried out concurrently with the development of Refs. 2 and 3 with the hope of providing sufficiently precise information so that enthalpy and entropy interaction coefficients could be determined. THE EXPERIMENTS The Sieverts technique was employed using an improved design of the reaction bulb over that developed originally by Humbert5 and subsequently improved by pehlke6 and Weinstein.7 The Vycor reaction bulb as shown in Fig. 1 was air-cooled and contained a port for the thermocouple angling off to one side and a vertical port for connections to the gas supply and

IN CIRCLES where mining men are wont to fraternize, a statement often heard is: "Yes, I spent six (or two, or ten, or thirty) years down at 'Chuqui.' " This means Chuquicamata, the site in Chile of what in all probability is the world's largest deposit of copper ore. One hears similar remarks regarding Braden and Andes, and, in fact, regarding a score of other big mines in South America, Africa, and elsewhere, but Chuqui seems to lead the others as the locale of engineers who have done a stint in foreign countries. One reason probably is that it is the Anaconda Company's premier foreign operation. Because of its unusual size and the diversity of its operations a great many men are needed. It is a sort of training school for young engineers; but, also, Anaconda has sent down a great many mature members of its big organization for special assignments like metallurgical research or plant construction. Chuquicamata is about 150 miles northeast of Antofagasta, at an elevation of 9,500 ft. It is in an almost rainless desert country where the wind (it is alleged by some) blows most of the time. However, the copper mining entrepreneurs have done their best to make up for what nature has neglected to do in creating a pleasant environment for the people who operate the mines. These include about 160 "foreigners" of whom 86 are from the United States, most of them accompanied by their families. There are 165 Chileans on the staff. Comforts, conveniences, and many luxuries are provided to offset in some measure the disagreeable features of the climate. Nevertheless, as I have implied, engineers at Chuqui generally jump at the chance to become "alumni" when opportunity offers. At the same time, they appear to take pride in their alma mater.

THIS gold problem is full of complications and can hardly be handled adequately or comprehensively in any short period of time. Perhaps I might begin by mentioning a few aspects of the subject about which I suppose there will be no disagreement. The first of these is that we already have a stock of monetary gold in the United States far in excess of what is needed to support any desirable increase in the present volume of currency and credit. The second is that this already superabundant gold stock is certain to be considerably enlarged during the course of the war, and presumably during the months of readjustment following its conclusion. Some billions of additional gold, we may reasonably presume, will come into the country during these next few years, thus increasing the aggregate monetary gold stock from the present eighteen billions to perhaps twenty- two or even twenty-five billion dollars.

THE Petroleum Division will hold two meetings this fall, one on the Coast at Los Angeles, Sept. 29, with the technical sessions in the assembly room of the California Oil and Gas Association and a banquet Friday evening at the Richfield Cafe atop the Richfield building; the other in the Southwest, at Dallas, Texas, Oct. 6 and 7, with the Baker Hotel as headquarters. Dr. Frederick M. Becket, President of the Institute, and A. B. Parsons, Secretary, will attend both meetings. Arrangements for the meetings are not yet complete but the respective local committees, working in close touch with the officials of the Division are rapidly shaping up the programs and other detail.

IN a paper read at the Lake Superior meeting, August, 1880, an account was given of the successful use of Rendrock and Monaky powder upon a scaffoldn and salamander in the furnace. On April 5th, 1881, the same trouble called for like treatment, which, though not so immediately. successful, was on the whole more instructive than the first trial, and points, I trust, to a reasonably sure remedy for all such difficulties. Up to December 4th, 1880, foundry and mill iron were made from Old Bed and New Bed magnetite, and Kearneyy red hematite, when a return was made to Bessemer iron, from an inferior quality of New Bed ore as compared with that used during first blast. January 18th, 1881, New Bed, Chateangay, and East-shaft, a newly-opened Bessemer deposit of Messrs. Witherbee, Sherman & Co., were first used, and continued up to February 13th, on a fuel charge of 80 per cent. anthracite and 20 per cent. coke, the product on the three ores being about 10 tons more per day than on New Bed alone. From this time until March 11th all coal was used, and New Bed, Chateangay, and East-shaft ores, up to February 22d, and from that date Chateangay and New Bed, the product falling off 9 6/10 tons per day as a result of not using coke. It is fair, however, to state that the furnace was not in good condition during' this period, being over-burdened, and the New Bed ore was, temporarily, uncommonly poor, for reasons of no particular interest here.. THE death, on May 6, 1908, of Dr. Hermann Wedding, Privy Mining Councilor of the Kingdom of Prussia, and Professor of the Metallurgy of Iron and Steel at the Royal Mining Academy of Berlin, was a loss keenly felt by the whole metallurgical world. Not alone in his native land, but also in foreign countries did he enjoy an esteem of which the title of honorary membership in the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the United States Association of Charcoal Iron-Workers, and the (British) Iron and Steel Institute bears eloquent testimony. Hermann Wedding was born March 9, 1834, in Berlin. At the suggestion of Dr. C. J. B. Karsten, the veteran father of Prussian metallurgy and author of the first German text-book of the metallurgy of iron, lie turned his attention, after gradu¬ating from the gymnasium, to mining and metallurgy. In 1853, he began a practical course at the Malapane iron-works, in Upper Silesia. Subsequently, he studied at the Berlin Mining Academy, and received from the University in 1859 the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. A journey which be made to England, somewhat later, led to his undertaking a German translation, with revision and additions, of John Percy's classic treatise on the metallurgy of iron and steel, the publication of which, in successive installments, stretched through many years. In 1863, lie published, as a thesis in connection with his "Assessor's examination," an essay, entitled The Results of the Bessemer Process for the Production of Steel, and Its Prospects for the Rhenish and Westphalian Iron and Steel Industry, which revealed such ability and knowledge as to secure for him a call to the chair of metallurgy in the Berlin Mining Academy.

JUST as 85 per cent of the total ore produced annually in the United States comes from the Lake Superior region, so does one of its six producing districts-the Mesabi --dominate that region both as to production and total reserves; also in ore Treatment, Mesabi practice is dominant. Therefore, in discussing future reserves or ore treatment one may visualize one big district with five smaller districts as so many satellites. In considering the future less thought need be given to processes than to, economic policies. For thirty years experimental work has now been in progress and every possible ore-treatment process now known has been given attention. This work was started when there was no recognizable danger of running short of ore because of rapid consumption. Thirty years ago the annual production had just progressed beyond the twenty-million bracket for the first time. Today fifty million tons is considered a small production, and last year the aim was for 65 million. At the recent rate of production the life of the estimated reserves of good ore is about 35 years. All who know the local terrain are convinced that, unlike thirty years ago, the chances for discoveries of new big deposits are nil; treatment of lean ores obviously is to become an all-important topic.

Arthur Jarman, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (communication to the Secretary*):—All designs for modern metallurgical and chemical laboratories should provide each student's desk with a hood or cupboard for the removal of fumes, but I doubt the advisability of placing air-baths and similar apparatus close to the hot plate. It seems to me that unless the draft be exceptionally strong the fumes from ordinary wet assay work will corrode the iron-work of the fittings, in which case the baths would have to be removed to a general desk in order to lighten the work of the laboratory attendant. Since the laboratory described by Mr. White has been in use for two years, I should like to ask if any inconvenience has resulted from this corrosion. If not, it is certainly an important improvement to have the air-baths and similar apparatus placed on the student's desk. The hoods described by Mr. White are supplied with a good draft by means of a fan, which gives them a great advantage

The resin-in-pulp (RIP) ion exchange process was originally conceived by the Atomic Energy Commission in the early 1950's. However it was developed to commercial success by the Anaconda Co. at its 3000-tpd ore processing mill in Grants, N. M. Essentially, the Anaconda mill's crushing, grinding and acid leaching operations are the same as at the nearby Kerr-McGee mill, except that Anaconda uses manganese dioxide instead of sodium chlorate as oxidant during acid leaching. The real differences between the two mills become evident when considering how Anaconda treats its leached materials.

A number of recmt determinations for the ratio of extrinsic to intrinsic stacking fault energy in fcc solid solutions are examined. Some of these arise from incomplete analyses which can yield only approxi?nate values for the ratio. Reliable results, on the other hand, obtained using extrinsic-intrinsic fault pairs, show that the extrinsic and intrinsic fault energies are essentially equal in several materials. There is some reason to believe that this finding is of general applicability to fcc elements and alloys. A wide range of values has been obtained for the relative magnitudes of the extrinsic and intrinsic stacking fault energies (yext and yint, respectively) in recently published studies in a variety of materials. In contrast, Hirth and Lothe' using a central force model have shown that out to tenth nearest-neighbor interactions the perturbation in energy caused by both types of fault is the same. Although the model used is not completely valid in metals, there is nevertheless some indication that marked variations of yext/nnt should not be observed from one material to another. In early work in Cu-A1, Cu-Ge, Ni-Co, and stainless steel all the deformation faults observed in the electron microscope were found to be intrinsic in nature, which led to an attitude that the extrinsic fault energy must be considerably greater than the intrinsic. Extrinsic faulting arising from deformation has, however, more recently been directly observed in Au-4.8 at. pct n;~ Ag-6 at. pct Sn and Ag-8 at. pct sn; Ag-7.5 at. pct In and Ag-11.8 at. pct 1n;"' pure silwer and Ag-0.5 at. pct ~n;' and Cu-22 at. pct Zn, Cu-30 at. pct Zn, and Cu-7.5 at. pct ~1.l' Multilayer loops containing extrinsic faulting have also been observed in quenched aluminum." While peak asymmetries in X-ray faulting probability studies were generally attributed to the presence of twins,Lelel2 has recently reinterpreted earlier X-ray data in Ag-Sb alloysU in terms of the presence of extrinsic faulting. The determinations of yeXt/yint made from the above studies are shown in Table I, with a brief description of the techniques employed. A number of the methods utilized are deficient in one or more respects, and the reliability of the values listed will be discussed. ~ele'~ recognizes that his approximate determinations of yext/yint assumes equal numbers of extrin-sically and intrinsically faulted dislocations. It is well-known, however, that such an assumption is not at all justified since extrinsic faulting has but rarely been observed in samples studied in the electron microscope. The only conclusion that should be drawn from the X-ray results at present is that the total intrinsic scattering cross section (i.e., the product of the width of the intrinsically faulted dislocations with their density) is approximately ten times greater than for extrinsic faulting in these particular samples. An important point is that the relative magnitudes of the energies cannot be inferred from results of this type, unless the intrinsic and extrinsic faults form with equal ease. One must recognize that, although a formation barrier may restrict the amount of extrinsic faulting which occurs, this in no way implies that the extrinsic and intrinsic energies should be different. It is unlikely that a worthwhile estimate of the relative densities of extrinsically and intrinsically faulted dislocations can be made at the high deformations present in X-ray samples. ~oretto,'~ from a statistical argument applied to the nonobservation of extrinsically faulted tetrahedra out of a large sample, concluded that yeXt/yint could not be less than -4.5. However, the present author feels that a high-energy formation barrier as just supposed also explains this finding satisfactorily and that no conclusion can possibly be drawn concerning the actual extrinsic stacking fault energy. The same argument also serves to explain the fact that extrinsic faulting has been relatively little observed in the electron microscope. Extrinsic-intrinsic node pairs and isolated extrinsic nodes were first reported by Loretto~ and subsequently by Ives and Ruff,' Gallaher,' and Gallagher and Wash-burn.' The recurrence of mine-fires in Nevada during the past decade is not only a matter of interest, but also one of considerable concern to engineers and mine-managers. The more important fires may be enumerated as follows: Forman Shaft fire, Gold Hill, April 21, 1903; shaft-house, machinery, and shaft destroyed; loss estimated at $50,000; cause unknown. Union Shaft fire, Virginia City, July 14, 1904; shaft-house, machinery,and shaft in part destroyed; loss estimated at $100,-000; cause of fire stated as the careless throwing of a match in the rope-house. Sutro Tunnel fire, Virginia City, Jan. 27, 1909; 700 ft. of tunnel-timbering destroyed, and direct damage of $10,000; cause " probably electric wires." The influence of various elements in retarding or accelerating the absorption of carbon during the process of carburization is fairly well known. In general those elements which form carbides accelerate the absorption, while those which do not retard it. It has sometimes been wrongly stated that those elements which raise the temperature of the critical range increase the absorption, while those which lower this temperature decrease it. Silicon is a notable exception to this rule, for its influence is to raise the critical range but to lower the absorption of carbon. Some elements which do not form carbides have no apparent influence upon the absorption rate. Carbon itself retards the absorption rate. With a view to obtaining more exact data upon the subject the following experiments were undertaken: 208 steels of different chemical composition were selected to represent most of the types of modern constructional steels. Specimens 2 in. in diameter and 9 in. in length were weighed to milligrams. They were then packed in the special carburizing box shown in Fig. 1, and kept in the furnace for 10 hours at a temperature of 900' C. A duplicate experiment was conducted at 1,000° C. At equal intervals of time the box was rotated in the furnace so that two complete revolutions were made in the 10 hours. This precaution was taken to neutralize as much as possible any effect of unequal heating. At the end of the 10 hours the box was allowed to cool in the furnace with the doors open. The specimens were then weighed again and the increased weight (carbon) determined. In the following table are given the analyses of the various steels, together with the increased weight of carbon expressed in milligrams.
