Since the development of dispersion-hardenable lead-antimony alloys' in the laboratories of the Western Electric Co., Inc., studies have been made of the effect of various third constituents on these alloys.2 This paper covers a study of the effect of small amounts of arsenic. This element is important since it occurs as an impurity in many commercial antimonial leads and the results obtained are particularly interesting as indicating a class of addition agents which exert a stabilizing effect on dispersion-hardened alloys. Experimental In order to study the effect of increasing amounts of arsenic, a series of alloys were made up containing 1 per cent. antimony, and arsenic varying from 0. to 0.10 per cent., the balance Doe Run lead (99.997 per cent. lead). The alloys were cast into bars 1 1/2 in. wide by 3/4 in. thick and cold-rolled to about 1/8 in- thickness. Three samples of each composition were annealed 1 hr. at 225" C. and quenched in water. ONE OF THE NEWEST developments of industry rising from the commercial application of scientific knowledge is in the making of solid carbon dioxide from the gas about 1925 the first efforts were made to manufacture "dry ice" on a large scale and at a price to permit widespread use. From that beginning the industry has grown to a consumption of 40,000 tons in 1930. Carbon-dioxide ice, as the name implies, is merely the gas compressed and cooled to a solid. The ice has a temperature of 109° F. below zero and is in many ways superior to water ice. It evaporates to a gaseous form so it is not wet and leaves no trace; in fact, one suggested minor use is as coasters under water glasses on the dining table. The gas is harmless except in large concentrations and. when the ice is used as a refrigerant, the resulting gas actually becomes a preservative, keeping oxygen away from perishable products. Not only does the ice have a greater amount of cold in a small volume than water ice but cooling is effected by direct contact of the resulting gas with the materials to be refrigerated rather than by convection air currents.

WHILE surveying in a small Western mine, the following problem was encountered: Two traverses had to be connected by running a traverse line down the main hoisting shaft, which was the only connection between the two levels. The shaft was inclined at about 80 deg. from the horizontal and measured 8 by 10 ft. The distance between levels was about 110 ft., measured on one side of the shaft. The surveying equipment consisted of a transit, tripod, level rod, 100-ft. chain, and plumb bobs. There were no side or top the- scope attachments with which to take large, vertical angles. Therefore, we were confronted with the problem of taking readings between two points, one of which could not be seen through the instrument when set up under the other point, owing to the obstruction of the horizontal plate, and of measuring the distance between these points with a chain that was too short. The method of a line of plumb bobs down the shaft was impractical because a setup would be needed part way down the shaft, which would call a halt to all hoisting operations for some time. After considerable experimentation the following method was used.

An account is given of the way in which a new process for desulphurization of hot metal is carried out at a Swedish blastfurnace plant. In the process powdered burnt lime is used as a desulphurizing agent in a rotary furnace. Results are given. IN a paper by Kalling et al.* the fundamentals of a new process for desulphurization of hot metal using powdered burnt lime as a desulphurizing agent were outlined. The purpose of the present paper is to give a brief account of the way in which this process is being carried out in practice by Surahammars Bruks AB, Sweden, and of the results obtained. + The hot metal from the blast furnace is tapped into a ladle of 15 tons capacity and transferred to a rotary furnace, a simplified drawing of which is given in Fig. 1. The rotary furnace has a total length of about 160 in. and an outside diameter of the rings of about 130 in. The furnace is in a horizontal position, with its rings placed on four rollers, and can be rotated by a driving mechanism at various speeds of up to 34 rpm. The rotary furnace and its driving mechanism were designed and constructed at Surahammar. The hot metal is charged into the rotary furnace through the opening to the left in Fig. 1. See Fig. 2. An addition is then made to the furnace consisting of finely ground burnt lime amounting to 2 pct of the weight of the hot metal as well as 0.5 pct of coke breeze. After the additions are made, the furnace is sealed to the atmosphere by means of two lids and set in rotary motion at a rate of 34 rpm. The sulphur in the hot metal is rapidly absorbed by the lime added, the time of treatment needed is normally 30 min. The process is then stopped, the lid is removed, and the furnace is lifted up by a crane and used as a tilting ladle for pouring the metal into the pig-iron molds, Fig. 3. Process Metallurgy The hot metal charged into the rotary furnace has a composition which usually lies within the following limits: C, 3.70 to 4.10 pct; Si, 0.80 to 1.80; Mn, 0.40 to 0.80; P, 0.025 to 0.030; and S, 0.060 to 0.200. Figs. 4 and 5 give examples of the changes in hot metal composition taking place during the treatment in the rotary furnace. As will be seen from the diagrams, the sulphur content of the metal decreases very rapidly during the first 10 min of treatment from about 0.100 to about 0.020 pct S. During the following 20 min, the sulphur content goes down slowly to about 0.005 pct S. The carbon and silicon contents of the metal decrease by about 0.10 pct each during the treatment. The manganese and phosphorus contents remain unchanged. Thus, if the process is started with an iron of the composition given above, the finishing composition of the metal usually lies within the following limits: C, 3.60 to 4.00 pct; Si, 0.70 to 1.70; Mn, 0.40 to 0.80; P, 0.025 to 0.030; and S, 0.002 to 0.020. It has been pointed out in a previous publication' that, for a given strain rate, serrated yielding can be observed only at certain test temperatures. Fig. 1 shows the results obtained for polycrystalline and re-crystallized tantalum, Va group in the periodic table of elements, where serrations in the course of deformation match the decrease of total elongation. However, there was no evidence of repeated yielding when testing molybdenum or tungsten, VIa group, at similar conditions, i.e., annealed and air-cooled samples (serrations have been found in quenched tungsten2). The reason for the observed serrations in the stress-strain curve are dissolved impurities on interstitial sites of the lattice. Of importance is the concentration of oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen, which are in random solution. Two methods to calculate the limiting concentrations for serrated yielding have been evaluated and applied with more or less success in estimating the role of carbon and nitrogen in mild steel.3 J. Friedel4 has given two equations, which determine the upper and lower strain rates i for the appearance of serrations at a certain test temperature: W denotes the binding energy of the interstitial atom, -1 ev for refractory metals;5 e' the portion of continuous strain in the discontinuous stress-strain curve, measured as -3x10-3; b the Burgers vector, c the concentration, see Table 11, in atom fractions; p the dislocation density, -2 X l09 per cm2 at an average stress ?, -15 kp per mm2 at medium strain. k stands for the Boltzmann constant, T for the absolute temperature, and D for the diffusion coefficient. Table I. Eq. [1], for a given strain rate, determines the minimum temperature, and [2] the maximum temperature, below or above which no "dynamic strain-aging" can occur. According to the calculation, which uses the given quantities, serrations should only be observed within the cross-hatched temperature regions in Fig. 1, and this is in good agreement with the experiment. The effect of varying impurity concentrations is indicated schematically in Fig. 2: only Eq. [I] is affected. Setting Eq. [I] equal to [2], one can calculate the limiting concentration cmin which first causes serrations. The second method uses the aging condition by Cottrell and Bilby6,7 \£i/ \ n. a / where n(t) is the number of impurity atoms, which segregate at a dislocation line of 1 cm length after the time t (t in our case is the time between "repeated yield drops" in the serrated curve, or, the time until the above mentioned strain E' is obtained, i.e., -1 sec for medium intensity or serrations). no is the number of impurity atoms in 1 cm3 and A = Qb4ep[(1 + v)/(l - v)], derived from equations given in Ref. 7. p is the shear modulus, 18,800 kp per mm2 for tantalum, 12,200 for molybdenum, AE the tetragonal distortion caused by interstitial impurities in a bcc lattice (approximately 0.4 for both tantalum and molybdenum) and v Poisson's ratio (0.35 for tantalum, 0.30 for molybdenum). From Eq. [3], combined with the condition for a pronounced yield drop as formulated by cottrel16 (at least one impurity atom segregated at the unit length of a dislocation), again a no min, and hence the concentration Cmin can be calculated.

SOME one once affirmed his great belief in luck, adding that he had found that the harder he worked the more luck he had. Clyde Weed is a firm believer in this method of courting the fugitive lady. He is at work early and late, often leaving his staff at Anaconda's offices at 25 Broadway breathless trying to keep up with the ideas teeming from a fertile brain and the actions those ideas entail. Miles ahead of his assistants much of the time, he still manages to be an agreeable fellow to work with, no small accomplishment as many can testify. Mr. Weed arrived in the world at Moorestown, Mich., on Aug. 8, 1890. Sixteen years later he entered Michigan Agricultural College, a lowly freshman. The following year, with the experience and wisdom expected of a sophomore, he transferred his studies from the reaping of a harvest on the surface of the earth to delving into the deeper, unpredictable bowels of the earth, his studies now shifted to the Michigan College of Mines. Last June his alma mater conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Engineering.

The commercial neutron-gamma log measures the intensity of gamma-rays produced by the interaction of neutrons with nuclei in the formation and in the bore hole. This measurement gives information concerning the distribution of neutrons around the neutron source, and in particular gives information on porosity or fluid content. Another type of information is contained in the frequency or energy spectrum of the neutron capture gamma-rays. The capture gamma-rays of each element, in fact of each isotope, have only those energies characteristic of that isotope.'" The neutron capture gamma-ray spectrum, if obtainable, would permit the identification of the elements producing the spectrum. Such information would have considerable value in oilfield exploration work if it could be applied practically in well logging. Experiments have been carried out at the La Habra Laboratory of California Research Cop. to determine the feasibility of a method of well logging in which neutron capture gamma-ray spectra are measured down hole. In these experiments, spectra were obtained for artificial formations under simulated borehole conditions, using actual borehole geometry. This paper will describe the experimental apparatus and methods and will present the spectrum curves for several formations. THEORY Basic Formulas The neutron capture cross section of an element is a measure of its tendency to capture neutrons. The macroscopic cross section, or cross section per cubic centimeter, of a material composed of several elements is the sum of the cross sections of the nuclei making up 1 cc of the material. This is expressed in the equation SB = Sn1s2, ..........(1) where SB is the macroscopic cross section, s, is the cross section of a nucleus of type i, and ni is the number of nuclei of type i/cu cm. If N is the number of neutrons absorbed per second by the composite material, then the number captured by element j is Ni = N nisi/SB = N nisi/Si ni si ......(2) When the nucleus captures a neutron, a new nucleus is formed, which is usually in an excited state and falls to its ground or unexcited state by emitting one or more gamma-ray quanta.* The emission spectrum has been measured for many elements (see Table 1). The intensity of gamma-rays produced by an element is proportional to the number of neutrons captured per unit time by the element, which in turn depends on the capture cross section of that element and the capture cross sections of the other elements present which are competing with the first element for thermal neutrons. In a small sample of material the number of neutrons, N, captured per second is N = ?SB, ..........(3) where $ is the thermal neutron flux and SB is the macro-scopic cross section defined above. The number of neutrons captured by element j is N1 = ?ni si = N ni si/SB . ......(4) The number of gamma-ray quanta of energy, E, pro-duced per unit time by element, j, is I(E)=Nni si/SB P(E) .......(5) where P(E) is the emission probability of element, j, for this gamma-ray energy. Borehole Effects The capture gamma-ray spectra of many elements have been measured accurately in academic and government laboratories. These measurements are made on small samples, and from these measurements the emission spectra of the elements are obtained.

The effects of radon in drillholes on gamma-ray logs have been described by L. S. Hilpert and C. M. Bunker1 Since these effects may cause drastic error in the evaluation of uranium deposits, it is useful to know the conditions under which significant amounts of radon tend to accumulate in drill- holes. In the studies described here, atmospheric conditions were found to dominate in the control of the behavior of radon in drillholes in the vicinity of a uranium orebody. The site of the investigation was in McKinley County, New Mexico, about 12 miles north of Grants. Drillholes of 4 ¼ -in. diam, on 25-ft and 100- ft centers, penetrate ore in dry rock at a depth of about 100 ft. A geologic log of the drillhole of primary interest is shown in Fig. 1. Gamma-ray logs revealed three zones of ore-grade mineralization in the Todilto limestone. A 6-ft zone, the lowest of the three, assayed 0.20 pct U3O8 by chemical analysis. The limestone ores in this area contain disseminated uraninite and some yellow and orange secondary minerals.

CREATION of a "committee on promotion of student interest in coal mining" has an encouraging implication for the coal industry. It is indicative that mining men, both in the field and in the educational centers, realize that the problems of the industry require the best talent available. Young men are being invited into coal on the premise that it needs them, that it offers opportunity for creative work and the realization of their objectives. In initiating a movement which purports to meet the objectives of any young man who spends four or five years of his life in college, the industry does so with a full realization of its obligations.

Messrs. Thomas & Cross, having leased from the Akron Cement Company from twelve to fifteen acres of abandoned cement-tunnels and chambers, for the purpose of propagating mushrooms for the market, commenced operations about a year ago, and are now beginning to furnish mushrooms in quantities to the local markets of Buffalo and Rochester. The quarries, or, more properly, the mines, of the Cement Company are located at Akron, Erie County, PIT. Y. The cement-rock occurs in a stratum about 71/2 to 8 feet in thickness, which is overlain by from 1.5 to 25 feet of limestone and flint-rock. There is a gentle rise from the opening of the tunnel inwards, giving a natural drainage and leaving the chambers comparatively dry. The roof is good and is supported by pillars and heavy timbers. The mushroom-beds are located about 300 feet from the opening of the tunnel, and are made in the form of mounds about 3 feet by 12 feet, at the base, and 24 feet high, giving to the chambers the appearance of a subterranean graveyard. THE concentration of zinc ore in Wisconsin is a comparatively simple process, although it presents problems that must be overcome in an efficient manner in such a way that installation and operating costs are low. As the ore deposits are small, the first cost of the concentrating plant must be low; while the low margin of profit makes it necessary to have the minimum operating costs. The original mills were copied from those of the Joplin district, as most of them were built and operated by Joplin millmen. These served the purpose well; they made a clean concentrate, which was the chief requirement at that time, as most 'of the mines were' considerably 'richer than the average at the present time, and wages and supplies were also considerably lower. ' The apparatus used at present has changed very little in principle. . The grizzly opening has gradually been increased to 12 in. and sometimes no grizzly 'is used. The crusher, gradually grew in size, the largest crusher has -an opening of about 24 by 13 in. and a 7/8-in. throw on the. eccentric shaft.

When a mixture of chalcopyrite concentrate and lime is heated in air, the following reaction takes place: 2CuFeS2 + 4Ca (OH)2 + 8 ½ 02 ; 2Cu0 + Fe203 + 4CaS04 + 4H20. Ca (OH)2 is the only common reagent that will adequately control SO2 evolution in roasting. Other additives tried, including CaO, CaCO3, Na2CO3, NaOH, MgO, Mg (OH)2, and MgCO3, were not effective. All reacted with sulfur, but not to the extent that will be required to meet the new control regulations for sulfur oxide emissions. For example: when the concentrate was heated with the theoretical amount of limestone (CaCO3), about 55% of the sulfur was retained in the calcine; whereas use of the stoichiometric amount of Ca (OH), converted approximately 99% of the sulfur to CaSO1. In most of the experiments, Ca(OH)2 was formed by adding CaO to concentrates containing enough water to simulate filter cake from flotation circuit. This eliminated the need for drying the concentrate and utilized the heat of hydration of CaO.

I need not say that I highly approve of the original Welch section, for it is in principle similar to the design which I made ufteen yeam subsequently; and from a professional point of view I would fully concecle to Mr. Welch the credit of first designing the modern steel-rail section. From com- mercial, matter of tict, and practical point of view, he was, however, before his time by many years; or to put it in another way, rail making was ten years behind its time when the new metal steel was first introduced for rails. If his design has been incorrectly identified with my name (as the sections are similar in principle, though they differ in thickness of flange and web), I beg to say (1st) that I much regret the misun- Understanding which has arisen through no fault of niine, aud (2d) that no confusion has been intentionally created by me. It is a pity that the section designed so long ago has not been made public at an earlier date, as it would make a really goal stand- and pattern, anil even now be quite equal to present requirements. THERE is a constant reiteration in some quarters that technical societies are autocratic and that democracy is utterly lacking and that members would welcome democratic societies in which they had full, control of affairs. While we may not speak for other societies, than our own, in so far as th's Institute is concerned such charges- can only come from people uninformed as to the circumstances. It. is no curtailment of the democratic privileges of the members that a -slate is prepared by the Nominating Committee to be voted on at the annual meeting. The Constitution of the, institute stipulates how the nominating committee shall; be chosen and who shall compose it, which prevents anything like- a- clique controlling- the situation. The Constitution further provides how the nominees shall be distributed geographically and the by-laws specify geographical boundaries: for-these nomination districts. Further more, any man or complete ticket can be placed in nomination by means of a petition signed-by only; twenty-five members,- and three or four times such an independent slate has been so nominated and elected.

EARLY papers1-' reported that temper brittleness is influenced by microstructure. This conclusion was based on room temperature impact tests, the inadequacy of which has been pointed out. Pellini and Queneau7 measured impact energy absorption at —80O to +25oC for several microstructures. On the basis of the shift, associated with temper brittleness, in the energy vs testing temperature curve they concluded that tempered martensite is somewhat more susceptible to temper brittleness than is tempered pearlite. The range of temperatures was insufficient to give complete curves covering the transition from tough to brittle behavior, so it is difficult to evaluate quantitatively the shift for the different microstructures. Also, the smaller shift of pearlite might be attributed to its already being temper embrittled at its temperature of formation. Accordingly, blanks 2 3/16 in. long were cut from a heat of SAE 3140 hot rolled steel barstock, 5/8 in. diameter, on which other work has been reported? A set of blanks was austenitized 1 hr at 900°c, water-quenched, tempered 16 hr at 675oC, and water-quenched, giving a microstructure of 100 pct

FROM the time the Japs overran the Far East, the United Nations faced a serious military problem in the critical shortage of many raw materials desperately needed to prose¬cute the war on two fronts. For many months this critical shortage threatened substantially to limit the gigantic effort to get shooting equipment into the hands of the fighting men on the far-flung battle lines. Now this crisis has been met. Solvency in raw materials has been achieved. Simply stated, this job of producing solvency has been done by "cutting cloth to fit the garment." This does not mean that we have all the raw materials we need. Unfortunately, a few raw materials are still short, thereby limiting the total production of certain war goods, or making these goods less effective. Where the supply of raw materials is known to be limited, however, substitutions have been made or production schedules have been geared to the amounts available, and an over-all balance has been achieved between various parts of the war-production program.

WITH the exhaustion of the sections of iron ore bodies amenable to opencut mining the iron ore miners raise the question: "How can we mine the extensions of these ore bodies in depth with the same costs as obtained in opencut work?" This question brings to the fore the relationship between mineral exploration and research on mining procedures. The iron miners must either find new de? posits amenable to their known methods of mining or develop new mining methods for deep deposits. It is understood that the oil companies will spend $30,000,000 next year in the search for new oil fields. How much the metal mining companies will spend in the search for new ore bodies is unknown, but without doubt the amount will run into several millions of dollars. If the mining companies that concern themselves with metals, nonmetallics, and fuels will set aside a substantial sum for fundamental and applied research in mining methods, they can not only lower their costs but increase their reserves thereby. Any increases in mining efficiency automatically result in increased ore reserves at no cost.

UNION MINIERE D HAUT-KATAIGA operates a group of mines and metallurgical works in the Katanga province of the Belgian Congo. It is especially prominent as a copper producer, but its output of accessory metals, such as cobalt, radium, silver, tin and gold have been considerable. The Belgian Congo covers 920,000 sq. mi. of central Africa, with a native population of about 8,500,000. In addition, Belgium controls by mandate the districts of Ruanda-Urundi (formerly a part of German East Africa) with an area of some 20,000 sq. mi. and a population of about 3,500,000 natives. Most of the native population of the Belgian Congo is found on the wide fertile plains of the great rivers, living under primitive conditions in a tropical climate, where it has survived throughout the centuries in spite of tropical diseases and intertribal wars. In more recent times, especially during the last two centuries, 'the natives have been subjected to frequent raids by the slave traders, which made their existence even more precarious, and if continued much longer would probably have resulted in their complete extermination.
