Four magnetic fleld balances and several spare magnetic systems were purchased by the Brazilian National Department of Mineral Production from the Askania Werke A. G., of Berlin, in 1932. Preliminary field tests on this new equipment showed one of the vertical component magnetic systems to be defective. A series of measurements designed to investigate the functioning of these instruments, and particularly the defective system, showed it to have an abnormally low magnetic moment, as compared to the satisfactory systems, and a high-temperature correction that was opposite in sign to that which would be expected for a noncompensated magnetic system. Since these systems were of the "temperature compensated" type, this condition indicated an accidental overcompensation. Attempts to correct for this overcompensation by readjustment of the compensating masses on the aluminum and Invar spindles failed because the distance by which the position of the masses could be shifted was insufficient. The temperature effect was reduced by this readjustment but was not entirely eliminated, as was to be desired. Theoretical deductions indicated that the defective condition of the system could be explained as due to three possible causes: (1) considerable loss of magnetic moment of the system; (2) increase in the magnetic temperature coefficient of the laminas; (3) dislocation of the component parts of the system caused by a shock experienced after it left the factory and before it was tested in Brazil. Later information received from the factory after examination of the returned system indicated that the third cause probably played the most important role. STEAD, Middlesbrough, England (communication to the Secretary*).-As I have not personally studied the question of quenched and distorted manganese steels I cannot give any information of my own on the subject. The question as to whether certain indications in strained manganese steel are "slip bands" or "twins" might be settled, I think, by heat tinting-a method I have applied with success to certain meteorites and other alpha irons in which there were undoubted twins. After polishing and very slightly etching with picric acid in alcohol, and then "heat tinting," the colors assumed by the twinned strata and the adjoining metal are different. The reason of this, as I have proved repeatedly, is that different faces of the iron crystals are differently attacked by oxidizing and other reagents, and consequently some of the faces take temper oxidation tints more rapidly than others. This simple method enables one to determine with certainty whether the "twins" are actually, twins and differently oriented from the bed in which they are found. After correspondence with Dr. Howe, I think we both agree that Neumann lines should not be called "lines" but "bands" or "strata," preferably the latter term, as I have found that they are more or less continuous throughout the crystals, and it would be just as improper to call the edges of cementite plate by the term "lines" as to call stratified twins by the same term.

The mineral, garnet, is a common associate of copper-ore in the southwestern portion of the United States. This association may be observed on a large scale in southwestern Arizona, in southern New Mexico and in Sonora, Old Mexico, especially at El Cananea, and at Nacozari. At other localities in Mexico the general occurrence of garnet " as a contact metamorphic mineral" in the copper-deposits of the Cretaceous limestone is noted by José G. Aguilera.1 It is usually found at the contact of this limestone with diorites, granites, etc., at numerous mines. The same authority also cites the occurrence of garnet in metamorphosed Cretaceous limestone alongside of diorite dikes in association with iron-ore. Other foreign examples are found in the Banat and Servia, at Rezbanya in Hungary, and Offenbanya in Transylvania, and at Bogoslovsk in the Urals. In New South Wales, at Broken Hill, the gangue in the Proprietary mine is chiefly garnet, with quartz, opal and rhodonite.2 Also, in a recent paper by George Smith, entitled, " The Garnet-Formations of the Chillagoe Copper-Field, North Queensland, Australia,"3 it is shown that in the copper-field of Chillagoe, Australia, where there are many lode-formations, about one-half of the number are garnetiferous, and many of this garnet-type are associated with magnetite, which is regarded as of analogous origin. The two minerals are found merging imperceptibly into each other. These examples suffice to show the very general and wide distribution of garnet as an associate of copper-ore. COLUMBIA-SOUTHERN'S Barberton limestone mine, 8 miles southwest of Akron, Ohio, is a million-ton-per-year producer from a depth of over 2200 ft in a district where other underground mining at this depth is unknown. Mining extracts 46 of the top 51 ft from a formation of Devonian limestone discovered by drilling in the 1890's. The same drilling revealed extensive salt deposits below the lime- stone, which led to the location of the chemical plant at Barberton as a division of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. in 1899. Soda ash was the principal product of the plant, and as production increased the demand for limestone increased. Columbia's first attempt to secure a reliable all-weather source of stone was the development of a quarry at Zanesville, Ohio, in 1919. Zanesville production eliminated some of the stock- piling required by the use of Michigan stone, avail- able only during the lake shipping season. Stone from some Zanesville horizons, however, was found to be more suitable for cement production than for soda ash, and rail transportation remained an important factor. As demand continued to increase, plans were made to develop the Barberton deposit.

POSSIBLY in no other of the non-ferrous mining districts of this country has the use and develop-ment of mechanical loaders been carried to such an extent as in the "lead belt" of Southeast Missouri. It has become apparent to the four mining companies in the district that it is imperative to apply satisfactory mechanical methods to the chief remaining stage of the entire operations-mining, milling, smelting and refining-in which manual labor is still largely used to handle material in process. With increasing wages and with the reduction of the metal divisor by the extension of mining into lower-grade orebodies, the shoveling cost per ton of lead produced has become relatively so large that in an effort to reduce it there is ample justification for considerable capital expenditure. Hand shovelers load about 18 tons of ore per shift and the average grade is less than five per cent. lead. Further, the ore is relatively heavy, about 21 cu. ft. to the ton when broken, and is often so coarse and so closely compacted after shooting that it requires much more block-holing, sledging, and muscular effort to shovel than, for example, does the cherty and more granular ore of the Joplin district or the finer ore in the headings of a drift mine. No mining company desires to pay for mere back muscles if it be economically feasible to avoid it, and labor saving machinery should be susceptible of operation by older employees, who are no longer capable of the more strenuous manual occupations.

Starting-- from Cu-Si diffusion couples a study of diffusion in the intermetallic compound Cu3Si of the Cu-Si system has been made. Mmker experiments showed copper to be the diffusing element. From the rate of growth of the Cu3Si phase diffusion coefficients were derived. The activation energy for diffusion is 18.6 kcal per mole. The couples show some interesting microscopic features, for which a tentative explanation is given. THE synthesis of dimethyldichlorosilane, (CH3)2SiC12, an important compound in the manufacture of methyl-silicones, takes place at the surface of a thin Cu3Si layer deposited on a mass of silicon particles."' By passing CH3C1 vapor at about 350°C, silicon atoms are consumed from Cu3Si in forming the volatile silane molecules, thus leaving copper atoms at the surface. It is well-known that copper acts as a poison for the above-mentioned reaction by catalyzing the dissociation of methylchloride.' However, no poisonous effect is observed, at least not before most of the silicon from the particles is converted into silane.3 This would be understandable, if either the copper atoms diffuse through the Cu3Si deposit to the underlying silicon or silicon atoms diffuse in the reverse direction to the copper, both processes resulting in the formation of new Cu3Si and so ensuring the proceeding of the reaction. In this paper experiments are described, demonstrating copper to be the diffusing element. Also a very low activation energy for the diffusion is observed. EXPERIMENTAL The silicon used contained 1 ppm Mg and 1 ppm Cu; the copper was spectroscopically pure (Fe: 2 ppm; Ag, Mg, Si: 1 ppm). The copper and silicon samples were prepared in the form of blocks of approximately 10 by 10 by 5 mm with two parallel sides by spark-machining. The blocks were ground on emery paper (grit 600), etched (copper with nitric acid, silicon with a 4:l nitric acid:hydrofluoric acid mixture), and cleaned with alcohol. As the brittleness of the silicon did not allow a welding procedure to prepare the diffusion couples, the copper and silicon blocks were pressed together in a steel clamp. The pressure exerted by the clamp brought about contact between the parts of the couple and so ensured proceeding of the diffusion. The couples were heated in a vacuum furnace (about 10"5 Torr). The temperature was stabilized within 1 pct. After a heat treatment a section parallel to the direction of diffusion was examined in the microscope and in the X-ray scanning microanalyzer. To determine whether copper or silicon is the diffusing element marker experiments were carried out using tungsten wires with a 20-p diam. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4 give micrographs of diffusion zones of Cu/Si couples. Analysis by the electron mi-croprobe of the Cu/Si samples after a definite heat treatment revealed the existence of only one intermetallic phase as can be seen from the line scan shown in Fig. 5. From the X-ray diffraction pattern it could be deduced that this phase was CU 3 Si.4 Even when diffusion zones of considerable width (up to 600 p) were obtained, no other phases occurring in the Cu-Si system could be detected, neither by the electron microprobe nor by X-ray diffraction analysis. WYSOR.-In the first installation we were afraid to put in the insulation throughout the hot-blast main for the reasons mentioned in the paper, but we used the insulating brick in two 8-ft. sections in straight lengths of our hot-blast mains. Owing to the high conductivity of the steel shell, the temperatures which were taken on the outside were not representative of the two temperatures resulting from heat flow through the insulating brick. As a result of studies distributed over the earth- including ocean basins as well as continents- some tectonists recognize four dominant structural trends: 1) northwest; 2) northeast; 3) nearly east- west, or equatorial; and 4) nearly north-south, or meridional. Baker' proposed a theory to account for these trends and Sonder5 called their world-wide arrangement the regmatic shear pattern. Moody and Hill6 proposed a much more complicated shear network which, although fascinating and perhaps ultimately useful, will not be followed here. In a recent review of deformation within the Cordillera, Wisser7 mentioned the four fundamental directions. The fact that many geologists deny the existence of the regmatic shear pattern implies that the fundamental structures are far from obvious. It may mean, also, that some geologists are not accustomed to examine regional and world maps analytically. The maps require much study, and certain features, should be isolated on overlays. Even so, with the present limited knowledge, uncertainties remain. The following analysis is a qualitative experiment, subject to change as information accumulates, and should be supplemented by the western sheet of the Tectonic Map of the United States.8

WHEN using an optical goniometer to determine crystal orientation' it is advantageous to use a preferential etchant so that the etch pits have plane faces which are parallel to crystallographic planes, all of which are of the same "form." "Westinghouse Silver Etch" (WAg), a preferential etch for germanium, is made up as follows: 40 ml of 49.7 pct hydrofluoric acid, 20 ml of 70.7 pct nitric acid, and 40 ml of distilled water containing 2.0 g of silver nitrate. Examination of metallographs of WAg etched surfaces (Fig. 1, for example) indicates that, regardless of crystal orientation, the faces of the etch pits are (111) surfaces. Optical goniometer examination of these WAg etched surfaces also indicates that the faces of the etch pits are (111) surfaces, i.e., all bright reflections are from (111) planes. When using an optical goniometer of the type described by Barrett,' not only (111) reflections from a WAg etched germanium surface but also other reflections of lower intensity will be observed. These latter reflections can cause confusion. We have used an optical goniometer made from a war surplus astrocompass and a galvanometer lamp. The reflections are observed by using the goniometer in a darkened room and letting the reflected light be in- cident upon a piece of white paper. The resulting decrease of goniometer sensitivity enables (111) reflections only to be observed. This in turn permits the crystal orientation to be determined in a matter of minutes, since only two measurements are necessary. The authors wish to acknowledge the help received from R. E. Davis who assisted in making the metallographs and aided the authors in the interpretation of the metallographs.

While the occurrence of phosphorus in coking-coal has assumed less importance with the development of the opeu-hearth method of steel-making, it may not be without interest to note the form in which phosphorus exists in one particular coal-seam. In the examination of what is known as the Big seam, which outcrops a few miles west of Columbiana, Ala., my attention was called to the distribution through the coal, in the form of minute veins and particles, of a resinous-looking substance. A small amount of this was selected, and was provisionally identified as evansite (Al6 Y2 O14, 18 Aq). Subsequently, through the courtesy of Dr. J. Sharshall Grasty, of the Geological Department of the University of Virginia, I was able to secure an additional amount of material, which was purified down to about 0.3 g. This was examined by Prof. John J. Porter, of the University of Cincinnati, and gave the following partial analysis: Per Cent. Loss on ignition,......... 37.43 Phosphoric anhydride,..10.33 Alumina,..........36.33 There was also a trace of silica, and quite a considerable quantity of lime and magnesia. Professor Porter was led to think that the material was not pure, but a mixture of several of the phosphates of aluminum carrying lime and magnesia. The material available did not permit of the convenient determination of the other ingredients. One form in which phosphorus occurs in coal is evidently as a hydrated phosphate of aluminum; and any coal which shows to the eye the occurrence of a light-colored resinous-looking material should be looked on with suspicion as being high in phosphorus.

CONSIDERING the importance of the steel trade and the strategic position occupied in it by the Birmingham District, it may be surprising to many to realize that even the first pig iron smelted with coke was made in Alabama on Feb. 28, 1876, although merchant pig iron had been produced in Rockwood, Tenn., in 1867, a plant which is still in active operation. The heavy deposit of Clinton ore extending from Pennsylvania into Alabama, varying greatly in accessibility on account of geological changes such as erosion or anticlinal upthrow, varies equally as much in thickness and in quality. The brown ores extensively scattered through the South also vary materially in quality, some being relatively low in phosphorus and high in manganese, and vice versa. The red ore varies materially in phosphorus, but the iron produced from these ores was always considered to be too high in phosphorus for treatment by acid Bessemer or open hearth and did not contain sufficient for the basic Bessemer process. Under these conditions there remained only the basic open hearth as a possibility, and for many years it appeared impossible to use it, because, with coke smelted iron, the silicon was too high to permit its use in basic lined furnaces.

Metallurgists and engineers have always been interested in the mechanism of high-speed deformation because metals are rapidly deformed in various applica-tions and manufacturing processes. The deformation of metals by impact loads has recently engaged the attention of a number of investigators. Many of their results have not been disclosed but some of the published investigations1-8 have shown that the tensile strength, yield strength and elongation generally increase with increasing strain rate. The investigation reported herein is an attempt to determine the reason for this increase in strength and elongation. found to depend upon the strain rate. In the bars broken at high speeds, the slip bands appear to be more numerous. This might account for the higher strength as well as the greater elongation. Experimental Procedure Single crystals of copper (approximately 99.98 per cent) were made in graphite molds by the conventional method of lowering the mold out of the hot zone of a hydrogen furnace at a rate of one inch per hour. p layers on n-type substrates of GaAs were prepared by difhsion of zinc into these substrates. Experimental details about the diffusion technique will be presented. It will be shown that inhomogeneity in the substrate doping level and crystal shucture defects cause nonplanarity in the junction plane. These nonplanarities give rise to high threshold current densities. From incremental sheet-conductivity measurements the zinc profile is derived. Data about surface concentration and gradient of the zinc concentration at the junction are presented. Finally, some results of laser diodes, which were made of wafers with extremely planar diffusion fronts, are discussed. ThE investigations reported here are part of a program concerned with the materials aspect in the fabrication of GaAs laser diodes. This includes studies of the influence of crystal defects introduced both during the growth of the crystal and as a consequence of subsequent diffusion. Compared with the progress made in the investigation of structure defects, for instance by X-ray microscopy in materials like silicon, no similar results are known so far for the case of GaAs. The further progress in laser diodes will depend very much upon our knowledge of these structure defects and subsequently upon our ability to avoid them. Laser diodes of GaAs had been made mostly by diffusing an acceptor impurity, normally zinc, into an n-type substrate. This procedure was found more convenient than the inverse one for various technical reasons. We will follow this line and restrict ourselves to zinc diffusion only in this paper. DIFFUSION TECHNIQUES AND EXPERIMENTAL DETAIL In order to set a refgrence for our experiments, we used a standard procedure for the diffusion runs. The diffusions were carried out in a sealed quartz tube for 2-1/2 hr at 850°C. One milligram zinc arsenide (ZnAsz) per cu cm of the tube volume served as zinc source. Under these conditions the junction depth was between 25 and 30 p. It is assumed, according to the investigations of the zinc arsenide system by V. Lyons and V. ilvestri,' that ZnAs2 dissociates completely at 850°C into ZnsAsz and Asg. Since there is a condensed phase of ZnsAs2 in the tube at 850°C, the partial pressure of zinc is controlled by the pressure of the arsenic formed by the dissociation of ZnAs2. Due to the fact that the zinc partial pressure resulting from the dissociation of ZnsAsz is only a weak function of the partial pressure of arsenic, the amount of the initial ZnAs2 is not very critical. Experimentally, we found that the junction depth, as well as the surface concentration, was practically the same, if the ingots of ZnAs2 varied between 0.2 and 5.0 mg per cu cm. The wafers were oriented with the main faces in (100). Surface damage due to cutting and lapping was removed by a chemical-etch treatment in a rotating beaker (etch solution: HzSOr, H202, and HzO in a ratio 3:l:l). The GaAs substrate material was n type and doped with tellurium, selenium, silicon, or germanium. It was grown by means of horizontal or Czochralski techniques. Deposition of manganese oxides is of common occurrence in streams of the north-eastern United States. Manganese entering the stream in solution in ground water is oxidized and deposited in the stream, primarily as oxide coatings on detrital materials. Prevalence and thickness of the coatings increases with increasing particle size in the coarse sand and gravel range. A number of metals of economic and environmental interest are enriched in these coatings. Samples of 8 to 16 mm pebbles were obtained from two streams in the Shawangunk region of southeastern New York State, an area of know71 Pb/Zn/Cu mineralization. The pebbles were leached to remove the oxide coatings and the resulting solutions analyzed for Mn, Fe, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Co, and Ni. Trace-metal/Mn ratios in these streams are generally one to two orders of magnitude higher than regional background values. Profiles of trace- metal/Mn ratios along the streams show considerable detail; contributions of metals from tributaries are sharply reflected in the metal content of the oxides. The potential advantages and disadvantages of using coated stream gravel for geochemical prospecting and environmental studies are discussed in the light of these and other data.

Young's modulus doto ore presented for W, Mo. Ta. V, Cr. Ni, Ti, and Zr as a function of temperature up to about 0.7 of the melting points. A plot of reduced temperature us reduced modulus produces a general correlation except for titanium and zirconium. Young's modudlus data for some representatiue commercial graphites are given up to 2400°C. All results were obtained from longitudinal resonance-frequency measzrrements of 4-in. long samples, corrected for simultaneously measured thermal expansion. Comparison of poly crystalline and single-crystal tungsten behavior indicates that all the observed modulus values are frequencv -dependent at the higher temperatures. STATIC measurements of elastic properties of materials at elevated temperatures are extremely difficult to make since the elastic behavior is obscured by relatively large first-stage creep effects. Dynamic methods which avoid this difficulty by utilizing the measurement of the resonance frequency of a simple vibrational mode have been described in the 1iterature.l-3 The authors have extended the operating temperature range of this type of measurement to above 2000°C and have described the equipment elsewhere.~ The Young's modulus data presented here were obtained with this equipment, using samples about 4 in. long and 1/4 in. diam, supported horizontally at the center and excited to the fundamental longitudinal resonance frequency. Young's modulus was calculated by the formula: E = 4f2f2p where E = Young's modulus, / = frequency, 1 = length, and p = density. Dilatometric data were obtained simultaneously by optical measurements of the change of length of the sample. For the metals tested, an attempt was made to obtain modulus values that would be representative of the pure, strain-free, randomly oriented material. All of the graphites studied exhibited a high degree of elastic anisotropy, while the method assumes an isotropic homogeneous material. However , when the values for Young's modulus obtained for AUC graphite were compared with those taken from static measurements at room temperature they were found to be only about 4 pet higher. This is excellent agreement considering the low precision of modulus calculations from stress-strain curves. The difficulty in using data of apparent Young's modulus for anisotropic materials arises when the attempt is made to use these data and shear-modulus data to obtain Poisson's ratio. The results are usually meaningless and sometimes absurd.' RESULTS Table I lists the sources, impurity content, thermal history, and dilatometric constants of the metal samples that were investigated. All the metal samples were tested under a vacuum of 1 to 5 x 10-5 Torr. Where our dilatometric data agreed with previously published data, the table lists the previous values and the literature reference. Where no reference is given, the constants were determined from our dilatometric data. Table II presents the modulus data in units of millions of psi as a function of temperature in degrees centigrade. The numbers were obtained from curves fitted to the experimental data. For some types of calculations, such as those attempting to correlate creep data, the slope of the modulus curve is of interest, and this information also is reported in Table 11. It is always tempting to try to fit physical-property data into some general pattern and then use this pattern to predict the behavior of other similar materials. Recent publicity has focused attention on the hazard of lung cancer among uranium miners. Many mining people feel the danger has been exaggerated. Whether or not this is the case, the industry must thoroughly evaluate this potential hazard and take corrective measures to minimize the threat of radiation after-effects and to maintain the level of radiation in mines within the presently-accepted limit. The measurement and control of radon gas and its solid radioactive decay products, Po-218, Pb-214, Bi- 214, and Po-214, should be the one facet of most concern to uranium miners in any radiation control program. To illustrate the radioactivity involved with small quantities of radon gas, the activity from the decay products of five milliliters of radon gas (imagine a 5-ml vial) would be adequate to raise one cubic mile of air to seven times the recommended maximum working level of 300 [ ] (micro micro curies) per liter. This would be enough radioactivity to raise to the maximum working level a 6 x 8-ft drift which extended around the world 160 times. Obviously, a little radon gas goes a long way.

IT will hardly be worth while to spend time over the discovery of this mine, how lumps of galena, were picked up and brought to town, and how legends were told of an old mine from which Revolutionary bullets were made. This is an entirely new mine, with no evidences of former or ancient workings in its immediate vicinity to guide or attract the prospector. The first pit was opened in May, 1874. In August I made a visit to this pit, which was 6 feet wide in the northwest direction, 12 feet long north 80° east, and 6 feet deep. About 4 tons of a galena carrying gray copper, siderite, and quartz, had been taken fron this pit. The lumps were all of them evidently float specimens, and varied from 8 to 12 inches thick, and showed very distinct indica- * An abstract of this paper was kindly presented by Dr. T. THE little village, from which this formation receives its name, is situated on a bluff of the Alabama River, 175 feet above water level. This bluff is a portion of high table land that begins in the western portion of Choctaw and extends through Clarke and Monroe counties. We find points on this ridge more than 100 feet higher than Tuscaloosa, and nearly as high as the Tennessee River at Tuscumbia. Through this the Alabama River cuts its way, exposing a beautiful cross-section of the strata, of which the accompanying sketch may give some idea. The fossils are found about 75 feet below the surface and 100 feet above the level of the river. There are seven distinct strata. 1. The lowest, extending from the water's edge up the bluff 80 feet, is a soft calcareous rock containing about 15 per cent. of carbonate of lime, with occasional specks of mica. In this a few Ostrea, Turritellce, and Flustrce were found, but so friable as to fall to pieces when handled. 2. Next comes a stratum varying from 2 to 8 feet, consisting of
