IN recent years, there have been a number of experiments conducted to determine the rates of heating and cooling of various sizes and shapes of steel ingots. Up to date, however,-most of the published data has dealt with small sized ingots, the largest being an 18-in. (46 cm.) cube, the data on which was presented before the Iron and Steel Institute in May, 1918, by E. F. Law. It is due to thus lack of information on the rate at which large ingots absorb heat and come to temperature that the heating- practice varies so widely in different plants. One of the questions over which there is much debate is the proper rate of heating of large ingots for forging and the time actually required for the center of a mass of steel to come to forging temperature. As a continuation of experiments described by M. E. Leeds1 and at the request of Mr. G. R. Norton of the Sizer Forge Co. and Mr. R. C. Drinker of the Emergency Fleet Corpn., the test described in this paper was carried out on a 24-in. (61 cm.) round ingot and the rate of heating and cooling determined under regular production conditions. The ingot had been partly forged at one end but, on developing a flaw, had been scrapped so that it was available for test. The size and shape of the ingot and its position in the furnace are shown in Fig. 1.

Monotonic tension and controlled cyclic-strain tests have been conducted on an annealed steel at various strain rates and temperatures in the weep range. Evidence of a strain-induced precipitate reaction abozle 500°C was determined from pronounced cyclic-hardening effects, increase inflow stress, inter granular fracture, drastic decrease in low-cycle fatigue resistance, and loss in tensile fracture ductility, as well as through electron-microscopy examination. It was found that strain rate as well as temperature had a pronounced effect on these observations. A parameter of the form P = T(7.95 - log ip) was determined, which was directly related to the ductility, defined either as the true strain at fracture in the case of simple tension, or as 2N 1/2 ? E p in the case of cyclic plastic strain. A highly satisfactory comparison of the cyclic life as measured and as computed from the ductility predicted by this parameter was obtained for a range of temperatures from 400° to 650°C and for crosshead speeds of 0.002 to 0.2 in. per min. MANY metals subjected to sustained loading at elevated temperatures derive resistance to creep from solid-state reactions of various alloying constituents. These reactions can be many and varied, and occur as a consequence of time and temperature according to reaction-rate principles. Strong evidence exists that many of these reactions are influenced by plastic strain, the argument being put forth that dislocations act as sites for nucleation and growth for the new phase.' Many examples can be cited where plastic strain during transformation influences the structure, and as a consequence affects the properties.2 The low-alloy steels serve as particularly good examples for investigating the effect which aging reactions have on resulting properties. Alloying elements such as carbon and nitrogen, and carbide formers such as manganese, chromium, molybdenum, and so forth, can, by the particular aging reaction which occurs, produce strengthening effects at various temperatures, and so endow strength to the alloy over a broad range of temperatures. These effects have been systematically studied by Glen both during creep3 and for constant strain-rate tension testing.4,5 The work of Glen is of considerable interest in connection with the present study, particularly in regard to the effect of various alloying additions on the true stress-strain curve and on fracture ductility at various elevated temperatures. He has shown that strain-age hardening occurred during plastic straining, which was quite specific both to the temperature of the test and to the alloying element involved. When strain-age hardening was noted at a particular temperature, a .minimum in reduction of area was also obtained. Provided the temperature for the minimum reduction of area exceeded 300°C, all minimum ductility fractures were found to be inter-crystalline in nature. For carbon steels containing molybdenum, two minima in reduction of area were noted, one occurring at 200° to 250°C, the precise temperature depending on the percentage of molyb-

(written dlscussion ?) .-It is interesting to observe how closely Mr. Hansen agrees with other investigators to the effect that the art of electrolytic zinc has left the realm of mystery. In his introduction, lie has said practically what Thomas French said in his paper "The Future of Electrolytic Zinc. "1 The successful electrolysis of zinc from sulphate solutions has not been an easy matter, and it is only within recent years that the difficult problem of depositing high-grade zinc has been satisfactorily: accomplished on a commercial basis. The principal requisite is. that the electrolyte shall be quite free from certain impurities. The methods by which freedom from these impurities is assured are now very well understood, and with experienced superintendents there is little difficulty in obtaining a high efficiency in that part of the process. When certain underlying principles are recognized, the difficulty encountered in dealing with the filtration of the acid and slimy solutions also largely disappears, although it has been a very serious one to the uninitiated. In the dissolving of the zinc from the roasted ore, there is nothing which any competent chemical' engineer cannot undertake, and any other operations connected with the electrolytic process are either of little or no difficulty, or are common to the retort process. Mr. Hansen also agrees with R. G. Hall's statement in " Some Economic Factors in the Production of Electrolytic Zinc:"2

INTRODUCTION Grouting is an engineering operation which has been practiced for many years and a considerable amount of experience and skill has been developed in this field. However, a review of the current literature (Houlsby, 1982) reveals that the theoretical background and experimental observations that are necessary to adequately predict or describe the performance of a particulate grout (e.g. cement based) in a jointed geologic media are somewhat inadequate. In the near future it is envisaged that the use of grout and grouting techiques will be used to tackle even more difficult problems than have been considered in the past. One problem that is currently being faced by the rock mechanics engineer is the development of geologic repositories for the disposal and containment of high level radioactive waste. In such structures there will be only one opportunity to ensure the success of the containment system. This success will depend to a large extent on the adequate and successful performance of the grout curtains to be utilized around the shafts and shaft liners. Regrouting will not be possible. There are other problems in rock mechanics in which it is frequently necessary to inject particulate media into passages of small dimensions, and where typically the size of fracture being injected is of the same order of magnitude as the particle dimension. For example, in the oil industry in hydraulic fracturing the enhancement of fracture conductivity is maintained by means of proppants introduced into the fracture.

INTRODUCTION A technique is needed to apply the flotation method successfully to apply the flotation method successfully to low grade and complex ore bearing hard-to-float oxide minerals. Thus it is necessary to find a new selective, powerful collector or to develop a new flotation process. Some attempts to use two or more kinds of collectors combined in flotation have been made but the principle of the reaction between the collectors used and the surface of mineral as well as the effect of combined collectors on flotation has not yet been fully understood. As part of the study on the improvement of selective collection in flotation, we have been investigating the flotation of minerals using two kinds of organic reagents, one of which is a conventional collector. We found xanthates were able to adsorb even onto the surface of oxide mineral, with the help of another organic reagent, e.g. a chelate compound (1). Furthermore, a notable effect of combined reagents such as the xanthate-amino acid combination (2) was found on the reagent adsorption phenomena and the collection phenomena, depending on the combination of reagents. The present study was carried out to clarify the effects of adding two kinds of collectors to the collection of mineral in flotation in the following two cases: (1) joint use of xanthate and di-alkyl dithiophosphate for galena collection and (2) joint use of a cationic collector with xanthate for scheelite collection.

This paper presents a review of the technologies which have been used in the application of III-V compound semiconductors to integrated circuits and arrays. These materials have properties which make them useful for various devices such as: light emitters, sensors, microwave sources, and microwave diodes. Technologies for incorporating these devices into integrated circuits have been reported and processes developed for fabricating planar devices using selective epitaxial deposition or selective diffusions. Isolation methods utilizing semi-insulating GaAs, oxide isolation, and ceramic insulation have also been reported. These techniques, and the devices and circuits produced or proposed are discussed. AFTER the invention of the silicon-integrated circuit, methods for utilizing compound semiconductors for integrated circuit applications were proposed. The scope of applications was potentially much broader because of the range of properties available from these materials. There also was the opportunity of coupling these properties with germanium and silicon devices to realize functions and circuits which could not be produced with silicon monolithic circuits. Table I exemplifies the range of electrical properties available in III-V compound semiconductor materials which are currently being widely used. A wide range of sensor and emitter applications result from the range of band gap. The band structure of GaAs and GaAsxP1-x permits their use as microwave oscillator source, and the high electron mobilities further facilitate their utility in microwave devices. The concept of "integrated functions"1 results from the availability of these materials and methods for utilizing their special properties. Heteroepitaxial growth allows the fabrication of a monolithic block of these materials. Semi-insulating GaAs permits the attainment of electrical isolation between components in a monolithic block without resorting to p-n junction biasing or oxide isolation methods. An "integrated function" is a unit which can perform a system or subsystem role and perform a number of electromagnetic functions. These functions could include sensor or input transducer, signal processing, interconnections, and control or output function. Two examples which demonstrate this concept are an optoelectric processor and a microwave receiver front end. The optoelectronic processor, Fig. 1(a), would consist of a light sensor, signal processor, and output emitter. The sensor could be InSb or InAs which would be IR-sensitive. The signal from this sensor would then be amplified and transmitted to the light emitter. The amplifier could utilize GaAs bipolar or field effect transistors. A Gap emitter would then produce visible radiation. The microwave receiver front end, Fig. l(b), would consist of a local oscillator section and a mixer section. A signal input from an antenna is mixed with the signal from the local oscillator. The local oscillator signal is produced by a Gunn oscillator. The single-ended mixer utilizes one Schottky barrier mixer diode. The IF signal would then be amplified further and suitably displayed. A further extension of the capability of utilizing the

Impingers TWO types of midget impinger apparatus are used at Climax. The Mine Safety Appliances Company's midget impinger (MSA) and the Climax Molybdenum Company's midget impinger (CMC) (Fig. I). The Leiman Brother's No. 25, positive displacement pump is used in the CMC impinger instead of the four-cylinder radial pump that is used in the MSA impinger. With the MSA apparatus it is possible to obtain the proper vacuum by adjusting the needle valve on the vacuum chamber, while with the CMC impinger the proper vacuum is obtained by varying the rate at which the pump is cranked. The Leiman Brother's No. 25 pump is built to displace 0.1 cu. ft. of air per min. when operated at 145 r.p.m. In the CMC impinger this pump is so geared that the required crank speed is approximately 59 r.p.m. Both types of impinger apparatus are equipped with a water gauge mounted on top of the case and they are calibrated and operated in reference to the gauge. The MSA impinger flasks and nozzles are used with both types. Calibrating Impingers A calibrated precision Sargent wet-test meter (Fig. 2) is used in calibrating the impinger apparatus. The apparatus is set up as for taking a sample in the field, except that the hose from the outlet side of the meter is attached to the impinger nozzle. One revolution of the large hand of the meter indicates 0.1 cu. ft. of air displaced. The impinger pump is cranked for one minute, therefore, at a rate that will cause the large hand of the meter to make one revolution. The gauge reading is noted, then the impinger is cranked at this rate for 10 min. and is checked for error. If the meter indicates that more or less than I cu. ft. of air has been displaced, the impinger must be cranked—ither slower or faster according to the error—for another 10 min. and again checked for error. This operation is repeated until the proper gauge reading for a sampling rate of 0.1 cu. ft. per min. has been determined. This gauge reading is used in all sampling operations until the impinger is again calibrated. An impinger is calibrated at least twice each week. MlCROPROJECTOR A Bausch and Lomb model B micro-projector is used (Fig. 3). It consists of a substantial metal base supporting the light source and a microscope. Illumination is provided by a Bausch and Lomb 4.5-amp. arc lamp with mechanical feed. A glass water cell filled with a heat-absorbing and color-filter solution is placed between the arc lamp and the microscope. Two types of solution have been found satisfactory— a 2 per cent solution of copper sulphate or a 2 per cent solution of picric acid and distilled water. INTRODUCTION The production of fines is an unwanted side-effect in most crystallization processes. The definition of “fines" is relative to the size of the desired product and varies from <30 mesh for coarse KC1 fertilizers to subsieve organic material produced by salting-out pro- cesses. Sometimes a well-developed fines distribution is necessary in the production of large crystals, e.g. the fines removal stream from a potash crystallizer. The production of fines is usually not desired in a crystallization separation step. However, product purity can either improve or degenerate with a decrease in crystal size depending on the relative importance of product washing vs mother liquor occlusions in determining over-all purity. Typically, both washing efficiency and mother liquor occlusions decrease with decreasing particle size. Fine crystal distributions have historically been difficult to measure and categorize; however this situation is changing rapidly with the use of electronic particle counters of the electrical zone- sensing or light scattering type. In fact, fine-crystal measurement is perhaps the key to better understanding and control of coarse- crystal crystallization processes. The fine-crystal distribution carries much useful information from which nucleation and growth rates can be inferred. The purpose of this paper is to briefly discuss a few crystallization processes in which production and/or measurement of fines is important and to categorize the process conditions which yield a fine- crystal product.

ALTHOUGH the corrosion resistance of magnesium and its alloys is closely related to iron content, there has been no direct measurement of the solid solubility of iron in magnesium. Bulian and Fahrenhors;1 and Mitchel]2 agree that pure iron or a limited terminal solid solution crystallizes from the Mg-rich liquid. For this reason a magnetic-moment method was selected to estimate that portion of the total iron content which is not in solid solution. Since iron in solid solution in magnesium cannot contribute to ferromagnetism, the difference between chemical and magnetic-iron analyses should yield the solid solubility. By experimentation it was found that the melting of pure sublimed magnesium (99.995 wt pet purity) in Armco-iron crucibles at about 800°C is a convenient way to introduce small amounts of iron. Melts retained 5, 10 and 20 min at 800°C analyzed 0.003,, 0.005,, and 0.018 & 0.001 weight pet Fe, respectively, after being stirred, heated to 850°C, and cast into graphite molds. The as-cast alloys were pickled in acid (dilute HC1 + HNO3), annealed at 600°C for 3 days, scalped on a lathe to remove the pitted surface, pickled again, extruded at about 100°C to 3-mm wire, reannealed 41/2 days at 500°C, and water-quenched. The specimens were again scalped, pickled, and used both for chemical and for magnetic analysis. Most of the precautions described were intended to prevent iron pickup by contact with tools or superficial iron enrichment by volatilization of magnesium during heat-treatment. It is believed that the specimens ultimately used for test were homogeneous and characteristic of phase equilibria at 500°C. Magnetic Analyses A susceptibility apparatus of the Curie type was used for magnetic analyses. Field strengths of up to 10,400 oersteds could be generated. By this method, an analytical balance measures the force of attraction which a calibrated magnetic field exerts on a suspended specimen. The force equation is as follows f/m = M dh/dy where f/m = force per unit mass of sample M = magnetic moment per unit mass dH/dy = magnetic field gradient The dH/dy characteristic of the instrument is determined by the use of a standard palladium sample, and the calibration is made independently for all values of H. Since a large finite field is required to saturate an assembly of ferromagnets, it is necessary to measure the apparent magnetic moment for increasing steps of H until a saturation value is obtained. The percentage of iron in the sample as free ferromagnetic iron may then be computed simply C= 100 (M1/M1) where C = percent content of undissolved iron in sample M1 = saturation magnetic moment of sample per unit mass M1 = saturation magnetic moment of iron per unit mass taken as 217 emu-cm per gm There is no serious difficulty in applying this method except for the unusual magnetic behavior of very fine particles of ferromagnetic substances. It has been found and is the basis for a widely accepted theory that with sufficient subdivision, the magnetic fields required to saturate and the coercive force after saturation rise to exceedingly high values. Recent work on precipitates of Fe and Co from copper solid solutions8 showed that about 5000 oersteds were necessary to approach saturation. The magnetic moments as a function of field strength measured in the present investigation are listed in Table I. Only the 0.018 wt pet Fe alloy yielded a magnetization curve with a fairly well-defined saturation plateau at 3.76x10 -2 emu-cm/ gm. This corresponds to 0.017 & 0.001 wt pet Fe in the alloy. This indicates that the solid solubility must be of the order of 0.001 wt pet Fe. The magnetic-moment data of the other two alloys are badly scattered, indicating that the amount of ferromagnetic iron in these samples is so low that the magnetic forces acting on them cannot be measured accurately by the analytical balance used. Nevertheless, the fact that even the 0.003, wt pet Fe alloy shows ferromagnetism indicates that the solid solubility must be below that value. THE papers by G. F. Loughlin and I. A. Ettlinger discussed the distribution of formations and ore-bodies in two of the main mining districts of the Southwest. The convergence of the deeper orebodies at Cripple Creek points to their common hypogene ori-gin, as do the occurrences of the copper ores of, central Arizona. E. L. Bruce described the areas in southwestern On-tario around Red Lake and Woman Lake, another prom-ising gold district. Of special interest was a series of lantern slides showing the use of power-driven boats and of hydroplanes as means of transportation. Within a few years, no doubt; such devices will revolutionize the mining industry and reconnaissance mapping in these relatively inaccessible areas. Much interest was evinced in the paper by J. W. Finch on "Sedimentary Metalliferous Deposits of the Red Beds." It was written as a caution to people at-tempting to mine these deposits. The discussion of the chemical equations presented in the paper brought out the fact that a large amount of study of such ores is necessary before we shall be able to write equations to explain their formation. Especially pertinent were the discussions by David White as to the relation of decay-ing plant tissue to metalliferous deposits and the color of sediments; also the point brought out by T. S. Lover-ing that chemical compounds produced by bacteria may greatly affect the deposition and reorganization of sedi-mentary metalliferous deposits.

THIS communication reports the results of some work done on the effect of gold, palladium, and platinum on the liquid-gas-solid equilibrium in the Ag-O system,1,2 see Fig. 1. Recently several investigators3, 4, 5 have reported the effects of gold, palladium, platinum, and copper on the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver. This communication represents only a portion of the work done here on the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver and liquid Ag-Au, Ag-Pd, and Ag-Pt alloyss—the greater part having already been reprted. The apparatus, materials, and procedures used were similar to those of earlier work.&apos; l The main precautions observed in obtaining these freezing points at constant temperature and PO2 = 1 atm were as follows: 1) The points were approached very slowly from higher temperatures. 2) In the very near vicinity of the L-G-S equilibrium point precautions were taken to see that the melt was in equilibrium with oxygen at one atm. Equilibrium was considered to have been attained when no more absorption of oxygen was observed in the last 15 min at a fixed temperature. 3) In the case of these alloys, the freezing point of the melt at 1 atm of oxygen and the equilibrium amount of oxygen absorbed by the liquid "infinitesimally" above this point were determined by lowering the temperature in very, very small steps, equilibrating at

Specimens of Ti-155A (Ti-5Al-1.3Fe-1.3Cr-1.2Mo), Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-4Al-3Mo-1V were hydrogenated, aged to high strength levels, and subjected to notched stress-rupture tests and tensile tests at two strain rates. Both Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-155A were relatively unaffected by hydrogen in amounts exceeding those found in commercially -produced material. Inconsistencies in the data and a relatively low initial level of ductility prevented an accurate determination of the hydrogen tolerance for aged Ti-4Al-3Mo-1V, but there was no evidence that this alloy was any more susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement than Ti-155A and Ti-6A1-4V. THE metallurgical literature has been considerably enriched in the past five years by the publication of the results of many investigations which were concerned with the effects of hydrogen on titanium and its alloys. Although it is not the authors&apos; intention to provide a complete literature survey of this vast field, it is worthwhile to summarize briefly some of the important factors which influence the embrittling phenomenon in a - B alloys. Some of the influencing factors are those of strain rate, temperature, and composition. Hydrogen embrittlement in a - B titanium alloys is now believed to be a strain-induced phenomenon, and whether or not embrittlement occurs at high hydrogen levels depends largely upon whether sufficient time is available for hydride precipitation. This condition is fulfilled by tensile testing at very slow strain rates or by rupture testing smooth or, preferably, notched specimens over relatively long periods. Conveniently, maximum embrittlement occurs at or near room temperature. The presence B - stabilizing elements, in amounts sufficiently small to prevent an all -B or nearly all -P condition, promotes hydrogen embrittlement and this tendency is believed to be related to the amount of a - B interfacial area present. Aluminum, by increasing the solubility of hydrogen in A titanium, greatly reduces the danger of hydrogen embrittlement, while oxygen has been shown to have detrimental effects.&apos; The preceding discussion is based on experimental work performed on annealed a - P alloys. This early work has shown that annealed Ti-6A1-4V and Ti-155A are relatively insensitive to the embrittling effects of hydrogen.&apos; Although no work has been reported on annealed Ti-4A1-3Mo-lV, the alloy would be expected to exhibit somewhat the same insensitiv-ity as Ti-155A. In sharp contrast to the voluminous literature on annealed titanium alloys is the paucity of reported investigations on materials receiving commercial heat-treatment cycles. To date, the most notable contributions in this field have arisen from two separate investigations on Ti-3Mn-1Fe-1Cr-1V-lMo, the so-called 3Mn comple~. These investigations

Coprecipitation of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes has been applied to floccula-tion of several mineral systems. Results obtained in a study of the flocculation of kaolinite and hematite suspensions of polycationic and polyanionic electrolytes are presented. Greatly increased settling rates were observed following precipitation of positive and negative polyelectrolytes on the surface of finely divided minerals in aqueous suspension. The ratios of polycationic to polyanionic electrolytes required to produce maximum sedimentation have been shown to correspond closely with the equivalence points obtained by light scattering studies of systems containing the positive and negative polyelectrolytes by themselves. DISPERSION of colloids has been of interest to surface chemists for many years. Flocculation studies have been employed to evaluate the limits of colloid stability. In water suspensions, colloids become unstable and flocculate when the ( potential, the potential of the kinetic solvation sheath, falls to a value at which van der Waals forces may act to draw the particles together. This may happen through an adjustment of the pH of the suspension or by addition of a salt. Optimum conditions for rapid formation of large flocs are found in the region of minimum ( potential. In addition to these well known considerations, colloids in water suspensions are known to be flocculated by certain large organic macromolecules. These polyelectrolytes in some cases minimize the i potential and in other instances increase the attractive forces by supplying sites for hydrogen bonding.&apos; Use of organic polyelectrolytes in flocculation of mineral colloids has increased rapidly in recent years. These materials are now recognized as indispensable aids to fluid-solid separations in many extractive metallurgical operations. They have been found to increase both the settling rate in thickeners and the filtration rate of filters. In the elucidation of the characteristics of these organic reagents as floc-culants in this laboratory, it was discovered that interaction of certain polyelectrolytes had a surprisingly good effect on flocculation of mineral colloids. Experimental Procedure: The anionic flocculants used in this study were Lytron 886 and 887, produced by Monsanto Chemical Co. Both reagents are copolymers of vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride. Lime is added to Lytron 886, whereas Lytron 887 is all organic. These reagents possess two carboxyl groups for each acetate group and are therefore anionic in character. The cationic reagents used were the Peter Cooper Co. 1-X and 2-X glues. The structures are not definitely known, but the re- agents are amines and are cationic in character. The glues were prepared in the chrome-alum form. Both types of reagents may be classified as polyelectrolytes in that they are high molecular weight polymers and ionize in water. All data presented are in terms of sedimentation rate, measured in 250-ml glass-stoppered graduated cylinders. With suitable precautions such measurements are fairly reproducible and provide a sensitive means for selecting important parameters such as pH, reagent concentration, and floc size and density.2 Agitation was standardized with five complete end over end cycles of the suspensions in the stoppered graduated cylinders.

WITH Thomas G. Fear, chairman of the Coal Di- vision, presiding, the coal miners opened their program Monday morning with a general session at which three papers were presented. The first, "The Classification of Coal for Stationary Steam Generation," was presented by the author, Thomas W. Harris, Jr. In discussion, H. T. Coates inquired if it would not be possible to pick out a geographical coal section, certain seams or a group of mines, which would rank high in a desired feature or features, perhaps giving different -- - local sections or different mines something to designate a rating ("good," "fair," and "poor"). This might be done relative to anti-clinkering, free-burning, ,anti-slagging, smokelessness, friability and grindability. These might be listed or arranged on a map or diagram so that the prospective customer could find a coal that rated particularly high in desired characteristics. C. A. Reed pointed out, in part, that coal producers and sellers have found a bad but necessarily present condition in the country, especially with the smaller user of coal. This is entirely due to the fact that the employer expects his purchasing representative to be a genius and have expert knowledge of everything he buys, coal included, whereas in the larger plants he has and uses expert knowledge from the active organization when necessary. J. B. Morrow said that size rating was important in classifying coal and he emphasized that it was impossible to come to a definite basis on analysis alone.

The purpose of this paper is to present an application of computer technology to assist the mineral company financial executive in assessing exchange risks. The paper is divided into five parts: Background, Translation Approaches, Theory, Empirical Validation, and Conclusion. BACKGROUND Exchange risk results from a change in the rate of exchange between a host and a home country&apos;s currencies. Legitimate reasons exist for changes in the currency exchange rates among countries in a world with over a hundred different currencies. These reasons include: different economic growth rates, social factors, cultural heritages, and political motivations. The problem of exchange rate changes are perennial and exist whether the world operates on exchange rates or floating exchange rate practices. The cause of the problem is trade and international payment imbalances. If one accepts the premise that exchange rates fluctuate over time, then the mineral company financial executive faces a continual process of reassessment of the impact of exchange rate changes on the financial worth of his company. (1) The mineral company financial executive prepares balance sheets and income statements that are audited by certified public account- ants annually for shareholders, bankers, and tax authorities. The financial executive translates assets and equities denominated in foreign currencies into domestic dollars, e.g., Japanese firms convert to Yen, French firms convert to Francs, and so on. VERY little information is available in the literature concerning the solubility of magnesium in titanium. Aust and Pidgeon&apos; report the solubility of titanium in magnesium to be 0.0025 pct at 650°C and 0.015 pct at 850°C. X-ray diffraction studies failed to detect any evidence of solid solubility. Based on the fact that the addition of titanium to magnesium increases the c/a ratio of magnesium, Busk&apos; suggested that the Mg-Ti system, like the Mg-Zr, is a peritectic. Eisenreich- eported the solubility of titanium in magnesium to be 0.003 pct at 655°C and 0.064 pct at 760°C. Removal of hydrogen from the melt increased the solubility of titanium to 0.115 pct at 800°C. Eisenreich proposes a peritectic-type diagram for the high magnesium side of the system. Recent work&apos; with Ti-Mg diffusion couples indicate that the solid solubility of titanium in magnesium is extremely small and that there is limited solid solubility of magnesium in titanium. Experimental work on the Ti-Mg system is complicated by the fact that the boiling point of magnesium is considerably below the melting point of titanium. Consequently, the usual alloying methods are impractical. Alloying was accomplished in this investigation by sheath-rolling compressed compacts." The alloys were made from titanium sponge and high purity magnesium. Chemical analysis of the sponge showed 0.04 pct Mg, <0.005 pct Al, <0.001 pct Cu, 0.05 pct Fe, 0.022 pct Mn, <0.0025 pct Ni, 0.007 pct Si, <0.005 pct V, and <0.01 pct Zn. All heat treating was conducted in a protective atmosphere by encapsulating the specimens in fused silica ampules under a partial pressure of helium. Equilibrium was achieved by holding the specimens at temperature for periods of 24 to 120 hr. The alloys were hot rolled, cold rolled, and annealed prior to solution heat treatment. Fig. 1 shows the constitutional diagram obtained for the Ti-Mg system up to 1.5 pct Mg. Oxygen was known to be present in the alloys; therefore, it is necessary to consider the alloys as ternary rather than binary and the diagram should be viewed as a plot of a section through the Ti-Mg-0 system. Other investigatorso have shown that the addition of oxy- gen to titanium stabilizes the a phase. The data presented in Fig. 1 indicate that the addition of magnesium to titanium tends to stabilize the p phase. Armour Research Foundation7 has shown that the addition of magnesium to zirconium lowers the a transus and is classified as a p stabilizer in that system. Magnesium is soluble in solid titanium to the extent of at least 1.5 pct in both the a and /3 phases. No intermetallic compounds or magnesium-rich phases were observed either by light microscopy or X-ray diffraction. However, this does not negate the possibility that such phases exist at higher alloy concentrations.

The variation of the dissolution behavior of a ferric oxide with calcining temperature has been investigated. Samples were prepared by thermal decomposition of ferric hydroxide, nitrate, oxalate, and sulfate at low temperature, followed by the calcination in the temperature range between 600" and 1200°C. The samples of eight series and a fine crystalline sample of hematite were dissolved in 1 N hydrochloric acid at 55.2°C and the results are represented on double-log graphs for convenience. It is confirmed that all dissolution courses follouj either the accelerated process or the parabolic process except in the special case of the crystalline hematite which dissolced in accordance with the uniform dissolution of a particle. Examinations of the physical properties of the oxide powders revealed that the surface area measured by the permeability method is strikingly relevant to the dissolution behavior of the oxide. In the previous paper,&apos; detailed data were presented on the effect of the kind of acid, the solution temperature, and the concentration of acid on the dissolution of two ferric oxides. It was also shown that these sam ples dissolved in strikingly different ways. The present investigation was carried out on the dissolution of various calcined samples prepared from various ferri salts by various methods to ascertain the course of dissolution. Pryor and Evans2 pointed out a change of the dissolution rate at around 700°C for a series of calcined ferric oxides prepared from the hydroxide. Several papers374 reported also the dissolution of ferric oxide samples. It seems, however, that a systematic account of the relationship between the dissolution behavior and physical properties of the oxide has not yet been given. This paper presents the variation of the dissolution of the oxide in relation to the calcining temperature and the change of physical properties of the calcines. EXPERIMENTAL Raw materials were prepared by precalcination of ferric hydroxide, thermal decomposition of ferric nitrate, oxalate, and sulfate, and aerial oxidation of ferric chloride vapor, at as low a temperature as possible. The products were crushed, ground, if necessary, and sieved with a 100-mesh Tylor screen prior to calcination, after which the specimens were dissolved in acid solution. The following is a detailed description of the preparation of the samples. Sample H. About 500 g of ferric chloride (guaranteed reagent) were dissolved in 5 liters of deionized water and filtered. Ferric hydroxide was precipitated by addition of the minimum amount of ammonium hydroxide solution, and the precipitate was washed continuously till chloride ion was not detected by silver nitrate solution, and then filtered. The filter cake was dried at 120°C for a week and ground, and the -100 mesh portion was used. Sample S. Ferric sulfate (guaranteed reagent) was pyrolytically decomposed in a crucible at 700°C for 24 hr and the product was sieved. In this case the following calcination was carried out at temperatures over 700°C. Sample B. Commercial ferric oxide (guaranteed reagent). About 15 kg of ferric nitrate were decomposed in a furnace maintained at 800°C for 2 hr. The actual temperature of the decomposition was not measured. The product was crushed and sieved, and the -100 mesh portion was used. Sample N. About 50 g of ferric nitrate (guaranteed reagent) were decomposed in a beaker in a sand bath until a red-brown dense solid was produced. This product was crushed and sieved, and subjected to complete decomposition at 500°C. The precalcined product was again sieved and used. Sample N2.5. Since the decomposition temperature was not controlled for sample AT, a different sample was prepared in a temperature-controlled furnace. The subscript represents the decomposition at 250°C. The product was treated in the same manner as sample N. Sample Nc. Under atmospheric pressure it is prac-tically inevitable that ferric nitrate hydrate melts to form a brown liquid at about 50°C before pyrolysis. For this reason, the salt was first slowly heated under reduced pressure (about 10-3 mm Hg measured in a trap refrigerated by dry ice-alcohol) to achieve dehydration without melting. About 5 hr were required for the dehydration and the partial decomposition. Then the temperature was elevated to 500° C in air for complete decomposition. The relatively porous product was sieved and used. Sample Ov. About 200 g of ferric oxalate hydrate (extra pure) were dehydrated under reduced pressure (as described above) followed by thermal decomposition at 500°C for 6 hr in air. The decomposition of this salt was accompanied by liberation of carbon monoxide, by which the ferric salt was initially reduced to a black powder. The powder changed in turn into brown ferric oxide as the gas liberation decreased and reoxidation predominated. The product consisted of sparkling fine particles passing through a 100-mesh screen. However it was ground and sieved as for the other samples. Sample D. Commercial fine powder for magnetic tape purposes. The preparation was as follows.5 Ferric chloride vapor and preheated excess air were mixed and passed into a reaction tube where oxidation took place at 450°C. The fine powder formed was collected in a cottrell chamber. The product was vacuum-degassed at 450°C for 1 hr and sieved.

In the use of the apparatus purchased for the new chemical laboratories of the university, no piece has given us more satisfaction, or has been a greater success, than a new still which is the subject of this paper. In the designing of this still I had two definite objects in view ; one, the utilizing of steam from the large 60 horse-power boiler used in heating the building, and the other, a provision for making distilled water with gas, when steam from the heating-plant was not available. The still is encased in wrought-iron, with a lining of asbestos, and is provided with a float which automatically regulates the flow of water from the supply-pipe. It was made for me by G. J. M?rrle, Pforzheim, Germany, and was imported by Messrs. Eimer & Amend, of New York City. It is a beautiful piece of apparatus, and the workmanship is excellent in every detail. The essential parts of this apparatus will be understood by consulting the accompanying figures, but a few words of explanation may be appropriate. The still has a capacity of seven gallons, and is made of heavy copper, tin-lined. It has a water-gauge showing the height of the water in the still, also an exit for steam, and safetyvalve, V; inlet for steam through a coiled perforated block-tin pipe; also an outlet, 0, for cleaning out the still; and there is also a heavy

The faster that aircraft fly the sooner some new and stronger material must be found to take the place of the present aluminum alloy used in all-metal planes. Experts of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. in studying hi-speed aircraft, are convinced that the present all-metal plane, of semi-monocoque, aluminum alloy construction, is not the ultimate in aircraft design. Magnesium alloys and steel are under consideration.
