MINERALS and mineral resources are recognized as one of the things that nations are prone to quarrel about. The territory that was arbitrarily incorporated into the Polish Republic after the World War produces a variety of essential minerals on a substantial scale. The accompanying table has been compiled to give some idea of the relative importance of this production. Poland, before the recent war started, had an area of 150,000 sq.mi., just a little larger than the State of Montana. Its population was 32,000,000, equal to that of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Though not a highly industrialized country it nevertheless has important mines, steel plants, petroleum refineries, and sundry metal-fabricating manufactories. Coal, petroleum, iron and steel, zinc, lead, pyrite, potash, and salt are produced in excess of the country's domestic consumption. It has no appreciable production of copper, chromium, tungsten, nickel, tin, mercury, manganese, aluminum, magnesite, fluorspar, or graphite.

The distribution of solute during the progressive solidification of dilute Sn-Ag alloys was determined in both solid and liquid as a jbnction of growth rate, rod diameter, temperature gradient, and solute concentration, using radioactive tracer techniques. The results indicated that partial mixing occurs in the liquid during freezing for most of the conditions investigated, approaching complete mixing for larger rod diameters (>2mm) and slow growth rates. Measured solute distributions were fitted to distribution functions based on diffusion controlled solute transport in the liquid state, by treating the normal solute diffusion constant and distribution coefficient as variable solute transport and segregation parameters. Values of these parameters were determined for the growth conditions investigated. Observations were made to determine whether mixing in the liquid was primarily due to volume changes in freezing or to differences in density between solute and solvent. The former effect was investigated using a selected Sn-Bi alloy as a solvent with zero volume change on fusion, and the density effect was studied using vertical solidifications of Sn-In and Sn-Ag alloys, systems having, respectively, very small and large differences in density between solute and solvent. The result indicate that mixing in the liquid cannot be primarily attributed to either volume changes or density differences. THE solute distribution in progressively solidified rods of dilute alloys, in which there is complete mixing in the liquid, is given by the expression1 where C, is the solute concentration in the solid at the point where the fraction g of the material has solidified, C, is the initial solute concentration and k is the equilibrium distribution coefficient. If it is assumed that there is no significant con-vective mixing in the liquid, then the solute distribution in the initial portion of a semi-infinite rod has been calculated to be2 where t is the time from the start of freezing and x1 is the distance in the liquid ahead of the solid-liquid interface at time t. Expressions [1] and [2] describe the limiting cases of solute distribution in the liquid, i.e., complete mixing, or no convective mixing; in practice it might be expected that the solute distribution would be somewhere between these two cases. pfann3 has suggested that Eq. [I] is applicable for partial mixing, as well as complete mixing, if an effective distribution coefficient k1 is used instead satisfactorily describes solute distributions in rods of magnesium, n-g, and b-sb6 alloys that were progressively solidified from the melt without mechanical mixing. The values of kl were observed to depend on the growth rate4-6 and the temperature gradient.6 The purpose of the present investigation was to measure solute distributions in both the solidified rods and the melt as a function of the solidification variables, and to determine to what extent the observed solute distributions could be described by the above theoretical expressions, keeping in mind that expressions [2] and [3] have been derived solely for the case of diffusion controlled solute transport in the liquid and are not theoretically applicable to

THE GROUND now being worked by the Fairbanks Exploration Co., near Fairbanks, Alaska, has been known to be gold bearing since 1901. In the early days it was worked by drift mining and other small-scale methods. In 1922, Hammond started prospecting the gold-bearing ground and obtaining options on the properties desired. Two years later the present Fairbanks Exploration Co. started taking up the options, and preparing to exploit the ground. For the prospect drilling Keystone drills were used, with holes at the points of equilateral triangles 600 ft. apart. Holes were also put down more closely spaced to determine the limits of dredging ground. In the first drilling casing was used to the bottom of the holes, but in later work the casing was put down only to the bottom of the thawed ground, and the rest of the hole put down without casing. The gold content was determined by panning, each 2 ft. of depth being determined separately. Where no casing was used the size of the hole was determined by using water to measure its volume. The greatest concentration of gold occurs at or near bedrock. All the gold-bearing streams head in one big dome. Gold, however, is not found clear to the head of the creeks, the pay being first found some distance downstream from the head.

THE iron and steel activities of this meeting opened on Monday morning with the steel melting session," with G. B. Waterhouse in the chair and A. L. Feild as vice-chairman. N. A. Zeigler's paper, on "Gases Extracted From Iron Carbon Alloys by Vacuum Melbing," created considerable interest and the discussion in general was most favorable. H. W. Gillett and Louis Jordan of the Bureau questioned the method of analysis for oxygen and C. H. Herty, Jr., and J. M. Gaines, Jr., I , expressed their surprise at the large amount of oxygen with the high ,carbon alloys. Whether the gases found existed as gas in blowholes or as oxide inclusions was also a moot point. A paper by C. D. King, on "Basic Open-Hearth Yields," was an extremely interesting and valuable contribution. It was discussed by C. E.Kinney and A. L. Feild and numerous questions were asked throughout the presentation. Mr. King then presented a critical analysis of the losses together with novel methods of calculating them. A paper by C. H. Herty, Jr., and J. M. Gaines, Jr., on "Unreduced Oxides in Pig Iron and Their Elimination in the Basic Open-Hearth Furnace," followed. The question of silicates and oxides in pig iron created much discussion, notably by Henry Hanson and W. J. MacKenzie, who gave figures on chipping cost as a function of blast-furnace practice.

THE fall meeting of the Petroleum Division, held at Tulsa, Okla., on Oct. 11 to 14, devoted two days to technical sessions and two to field excursions. A representative attendance of 250 to 300 engineers and operating officials engaged in oil production marked the sessions and paid close attention throughout to a notable series of highly technical papers. Restricted as the program was to consideration of production problems only, the time proved too short for discussion or even the presentation of the 20 papers submitted. Much informing and pertinent discussion none the less took place, and the sentiment was general to the effect that the meeting was one of the best ever held by the Division. The meetings were held in the auditorium of the Municipal building and local arrangements were well looked after by the Mid-Continent Section of the Institute and the Oil and Gas Association. The combination of the three organizations served to bring together engineers and operators most usefully. F. Julius Fohs, chairman of the Division, presided at the sessions on Monday. Tuesday morning John M. Lovejoy of the local section took over this responsibility in the absence of T. E. Swigart, who was detained in California. The afternoon session was presided over by A. G. Heggam of the Oil and Gas Association and the Tuesday evening banquet by W. C. Franklin of the same organization.

THE oil-producing industry may logically be 'divided into four independent branches: (1) Acquisition of possible productive lands by lease, fee purchase, concession, or otherwise and the perfection of titles thereto. (2) Studies of the geology of the properties, leading to the location of exploratory wells. These involve reconnaissance and detailed surveys and the use of geophysical instruments, where conditions do not permit surface determination. (3) Drilling of exploratory or test holes and, later, exploitation wells. (4) Actual recovery of the oil from the wells by flowing, pumping, or other methods. These four divisions of the industry are unrelated in detail of accomplishment, but they are entirely complementary, one to the other, and must, in any efficient' organization, harmonize in their respective efforts toward the desired ultimate end. The relative order for the first two branches is not necessarily the proper one; in fact one should have knowledge of the favorable possibilities of a given property before it is acquired, and preferably, also, final opinions as to then proper location for an exploratory well, if such is justified in the light of

THE coal hydrogenation process is well known as a means for the production of liquid fuels -from coal. In this paper the possibilities of the coal hydrogenation process as a source of chemical raw materials will be discussed. The recovery of chemicals from coal hydrogenation products necessitates some modifications and additions to the equipment used for the production of fuels. The conversion of coal into liquid fuels such as gasoline requires two steps: liquid phase and vapor phase hydrogenation. Intermediate oils obtained in the liquid phase contain oxygen and nitrogen compounds, especially aromatic compounds, since the coal itself is composed mainly of cyclic compounds. These oils are the raw material for the separation of high molecular weight aromatics and of tar acids and tar bases. The relative amounts of heavy and middle oil-boiling above and below, e.g., 325°C-can be influenced by temperature, residence time, and catalyst of the liquid phase hydrogenation. In the vapor phase hydrogenation a solid bed catalyst is used to convert the intermediate oil from the liquid phase operation into hydrocarbons of the gasoline boiling range. Essentially pure hydrocarbons with a low content of sulphur, oxygen, nitrogen, and olefines are obtained. Depending mainly on the catalyst, the high ring compound content of the liquid phase oil can be preserved and gasoline rich in aromatics obtained. However, with other catalysts, these ring compounds can be split into gasoline with a high content of isoparaffins.1 Again, depending on the operating conditions, products of varying boiling range can be obtained. Selection of catalyst and operating conditions therefore makes possible the production of different grades of motor fuel and also variations in the relative amounts of benzene, toluene, and xylene when aromatic hydrocarbons are produced. The schematic flowsheet, Fig. 1, shows the main steps of the coal hydrogenation process, and the product streams used for the recovery of chemicals are indicated. In the liquid phase hydrogenation stage, coal is made into a paste with recycle heavy oil. The coal paste is mixed with hydrogen and preheated at a pressure of 300 to 700 atm in heat exchangers and preheaters. The coal paste and hydro¬gen enter high pressure converters where the liquefaction of coal, conversion of the high boiling liquid materials initially obtained, into intermediate oils is performed at a temperature around 470°C. The reaction products enter the hot catchpot in which lower boiling oil vapors are separated from the residue containing unreacted coal, ash, and heavy oil. This residue, usually called H.O.L.D. (heavy oil let down), is processed to separate solid and liquid material. By thermal treatment of the residue, e.g., a coking process, distillate oil is obtained, which can be recycled as part of the pasting oil. This stream is rich in polynuclear aromatics and can be, and has been, used for the recovery of such material. IN mining, quarrying, and construction, drilling and blasting have an important influence on the operations that follow. If the fragmentation of material being disrupted is inadequate, loading and transportation equipment will not operate at or near full capacity. Any operator faced with this difficulty should not be satisfied until he is convinced by a careful study of his methods of drilling and blasting that no improvement can be made. Rock in a certain quarry in Ohio seemed to defy any grade of explosive or means of detonation that the explosives industry had to offer. The average result of a blast was that a great part of the burden would be pushed out from the face in a number of large sections that would jokingly be referred to as "boxcars." These were no credit to the explosives man and a costly problem for the quarry company. Such blocks retard shovel operation as they have to be uncovered and subjected to secondary drilling and blasting which, if extensive, is an expensive operation. It was an attempt to improve the fragmentation obtained in primary blasts that led to the development of milli-second-delay electric blasting caps. The reasoning that prompted the trial was that even with wide spacing of the drill holes it seemed that the burden was separated too quickly from the face by the cutting action of the explosives from hole to hole. A detailed transmission electron microscopy investigation was carried out in connection with a manganese Hadfield Steel. At small plastic strains, numerous individual intrinsic stacking faults are observed. With increased plastic deformation, the stacking faults thicken into twin lamellae which in turn subdivide the original austenite matrix into smaller domains. The twin boundaries act as strong barriers to subsequent dislocation motion and is in a sense equivalent to grain refinement. It is this "grain refinement" which is believed to be the cause of the very high work hardening rates in the Hadfield Steels. In many cases, especially where an hcp phase is the stable one at low temperatures, the stacking fault energy in fcc metals and alloys decreases with decreasing temperature.' Since stacking faults of the intrinsic type are precursors of both twins as well as the hexagonal close packed structure, both of these entities should become more frequent as the temperature of a fcc crystal is lowered. In the case of the twin, there is no chemical driving force for its formation and it is generally necessary to provide the required driving force by an applied stress, i.e., strain energy. In the case of the hcp structure the transformation from the fcc modification can occur spontaneously (marten-sitically) since a decrease in chemical energy does in fact occur; however, an applied stress will provide an even greater driving force toward complete transformation. Since the transformation products mentioned above occur in an inhomogeneous manner throughout the crystal and since these can act as potential barriers to further plastic deformation2 marked strengthening effects can be anticipated. Also because metal and alloy strenghening is in general proportional to the shear modulus, these effects should be greatest in steels of the austenitic type (y), i.e., the fcc types. Perhaps the two most important steels in this category are the austenitic stainless steels and the Hadfield manganese steels. Both may be quenched from elevated temperatures so as to retain the austenitic states characteristic of those temperatures. The effect of subsequent deformation at lower tem- peratures has a profound effect on the stress-strain curves of these alloys. In particular Fig. 1 shows the compressive stress-strain curves obtained with an 18-8 stainless steel which was quenched from 1850°C after annealing for 1 hr so as to produce all y. As the temperature is lowered, the work hardening rate increases markedly. Although some hcp or c mar-tensite can be generated by plastic deformation as the temperature is lowered,~ it is believed to be a transition phase4 and most of the martensite produced is of the bcc or a variety.3 It is this stress induced martensite which gives rise to the very low initial work hardening at 77°K as can be seen in the stress-strain curve in Fig. 1. Similar low initial work hardening rates have been observed in the stress induced Ni-Ti martensites.5 Fig. 2 shows that an even more rapid rate of work hardening occurs in the Hadfield steels treated in the same way as that described for the 18-8 stainless steels a; the temperature is lowered. It is this ability to work harden to such high stress levels that makes the Hadfield steels particularly suitable for armor plate and heavy construction equipment. However, unlike the case of Fig. 1, no initial low rate of work hardening is observed in any of the curves in Fig. 2. Thus the stress induced formation of any low energy martensite phase in any significant quantity must be ruled out. This observation is in accord with the X-ray findings of Otte.~ On the other hand, small quantities of the E phase have been observed by other investigators using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) above Even more significant was the fact that large numbers of deformation twins were observed in the deformed Hadfield steels,678 which were postulated to be one of the reasons for the high work hardening ability of this class of steels.8 It is the purpose in what follows to discuss a series of experimental observations pertaining to the stress induced transformation in a Hadfield steel and to formulate a dislocation mechanism which adequately accounts for the observed results. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The stainless steel used to obtain the curves shown in Fig. 1 was of the AISI Type 303 containing approximately 18.0 pct Cr and 8 pct Ni. On the other hand, the Hadfield manganese steel used to obtain the curves shown in Fig. 2 contained between 1.00 to 1.25 pct and 11.5 to 13.5 pct Mn. In all cases the samples were in the form of compression cylinders 0.220 in. in diam and 0.370 in. long. Prior to testing the samples were annealed for a hr at 1050°C and rapidly quenched into a brine solution. This treatment was sufficient to preserve the y phase for subsequent testing at lower temperatures. All samples were compressed in an Instron testing machine using a cross head speed of 0.02 in.

CHILEAN mining in the public mind is rightly associated with copper. Chuquicamata with its great hill of copper-bearing granodiorite as well as Sewell and Potrerillos with mineralized volcanic necks together can supply a good proportion of the world's normal necessities of that metal. Chile is an extremely long and narrow country, averaging only 109 miles wide. Its eastern frontier is the Andes and it is on the western slopes of these mountains that the great copper deposits have been discovered. West of the Andes a great longitudinal depres sion has permitted accumulation of nitrates and other soluble salts in the arid north; in the north center it is hidden by a series of cross ranges, but in the center a moderate rainfall makes it the country's most important agricultural region. In the south this depression is drowned and gives rise to a series of straits and fiords. This enormous cleft in the earth's crust is separated from the sea by a coast range of moderate elevation which in the south is represented by a series of islands and mushroom-shaped peninsulas

This article discusses the effect of physical and chemical modifications of starches on the anionic and cationic flotation of silica from oxidized iron ores and magnetite-taconite concentrates. It also deals with the results of the interaction of starch, pH, and calcium ions on the flocculation, clarification, and filtration of iron ore slimes and magnetite-taconite tailings. Starches, particularly when an-ionically modified, were found to be effective depressants in anionic silica flotation. British gums and dextrins were beneficial for oxidized iron ores, but none of the starches or starch derivatives appeared to have any effect on magnetite-taconite concentrates. The flocculation and filtration of iron ore slimes were affected most strongly by the level of starch, to a lesser degree by the pH, and virtually not at all by the level of calcium chloride. The clarification of iron ore slimes was complexly dependent on these three factors. The flocculation of magnetite-taconite tailings depended mainly on the level of starch, whereas their clarification depended on the level of lime. As previously reported in the literature, selective flocculation and partial upgrading of a semitaconite could be readily attained with starch and calcium chloride. A previous article discussed some of the parameters that are important when various corn starches are applied to the soap flotation of activated silica from iron ores and to the flocculation of iron ore slimes.' Methods of solubilizing the starches and the molecular size after mechanical and thermal treatments, as inferred from the viscosity measurements, were shown to influence the adsorption characteristics on iron ores, and the residual concentrations of both calcium ion and starch in the pulp liquor were in direct correlation with the flotation and flocculation behavior.2-4 The present article summarizes the results of more recent tests conducted to ascertain the role of starches and starch derivatives in various phases of iron ore beneficiation. The scope of this investigation has been extended to include not only anionic and cationic flotation, but also the flocculation and filtration of iron oxide slimes, the selective flocculation and partial upgrading of semitaconites, and the flocculation and clarification of magnetite-taconite tailings —all problems that are of vital importance to the iron ore industry of Minnesota. By combining a practical approach with adsorption studies and by using single-mineral systems5 in these research efforts, it is believed that the ultimate goal of developing a suitable modification of starch structure may be realized. The topics covered in this article are limited to the empirical aspects of the research program on the depressant activity of starches and products in the cationic and anionic flotation of silica and of their role in flocculation, water clarification and filtration. 'This paper discusses a method and apparatus for determining the dip of formations traversed by a drill hole, by means of electrical measurements in the hole. The process consists in recording the Spontaneous Potentials present along three oriented generatrices in the hole. By comparison of the three curves thus obtained, after application of a correction factor to compensate for any deviations of the hole, the dip angle and the dip direction are determined. Excellent accuracy is obtained for dip angles over 10°. Because the method is simp1e and the apparatus rugged, the measurements are rapid and reliable; consequently, they can be made at all the levels that are of interest at any time after the well has been drilled. Mechanical cores are not needed to evaluate the dips. A convenient, time-saving procedure is to perform the dipmeter survey at the time the electrical log is taken, using for both operations the same cable and truck. Actual examples of results obtained in wells of the Gulf Coast area are given. Introduction The problem of determining the angle and direction of the dip of the strata traversed by a drill hole has practical interest, and sometimes vital importance, which need not be emphasized to the oil industry. The need for that type of information has existed ever since wells have been drilled. Certainly it has not subsided, in spite of the numerous inventions and improvements made in other fields of the art of drill-hole exploration. The few examples given in this paper are but illustrative of this fact. In the past, methods have been devised, and used, to solve this problem, but generally they have met with limited success, possibly because they failed more or less to answer the requirements of a modern age for fast yet accurate measurements. If accurate, the results were obtained at the cost of very tedious and lengthy operations. The new S. P.* dipmeter service offered to the oil industry is the result of exhaustive and in this particular field. In 1032 a dipmeter and electromagnetic teleclinom-eter service was made available. The apparatus employed then was of a rather delicate and costly construction, and the measurements had to be made with precautions sometimes difficult to secure on the rig. Although the information given by the electromagnetic dipmeter was limited to the direction of the dip, very interesting results were obtained in California, Trinidad, Venezuela, Rumania and, most notably, in the Netherlands East Indies.+ Apparatus The S. P. dipmeter surveys present none of the drawbacks mentioned above. The apparatus is rugged and free from constructional complications, therefore well adapted to field use. This, combined with the new, basically simple approach to the problem, explains the rapidity of execution of the measurements. The results are remarkably accurate and they are complete, giving the

The flotability of crushed zinc oxide pellets which were doped to produce more n-type or less n-type (more p-type) properties was studied with a Halli-mond tube. Flotation data are presented to show that the pH at which 50% recovery occurs and the collector concentration for 50% recovery depends upon the concentration of doping agent added substitu-tionally for zinc in zinc oxide. The time of sintering of pellets has a slight effect on flotation behavior. A speculative model is proposed to explain the observed behavior in light of the fact that zinc oxide is a semiconductor and has a space charge region at the surface. Experimental verification is necessary before the proposed model can be established as correct. In recent years, the attachment of flotation reagents to minerals has been shown to depend upon the behavior of an electrical double layer which exists in the liquid near the mineral-liquid interface.' Thus, a mineral placed in water will undergo a surface re-arrangement, most likely be preferential dissociation of lattice atoms or by surface adsorp-tion-desorption reactions, to form a dissociation electrical double layer with the solution. Among the many factors which influence adsorption processes, the past history of the mineral itself is one of the most important. Because of trace impurities, minerals from different localities may exhibit marked differences in flotation behavior. This is not unexpected, since investigators who have studied the detailed structure of the double layer's3 have known for some time that the impurity content of many minerals may exert strong influence on double layer variables. For this reason, their studies were usually made with minerals of high purity. The precise relationship between impurities in a mineral and double layer parameters such as capacity and electrostatic potential has been obscure. However, impurities in a semiconductor type mineral which is in contact with a solution have been recently shown to produce changes in the properties of a space charge layer which extends into the bulk of the semiconductor to a distance of one micron or more.4 The double layer is influenced by the space charge layer, whose origin is best discussed in terms of the band theory of solids. A qualitative description of the behavior of impurities in the bulk of a semiconductor, from a chemical point of view, is useful at this point. Briefly, impurities or defects (lattice vacancies, interstitials, etc.) in semiconductors such as PbS, ZnS, FeS2, Cu2S, NiS, NiO, Fe2O3, ZnO, CdS, MnO2 and many others, behave somewhat like acids or bases in water. The flux of evaporation J from {loo) , {111), and (110) planes of silver single crystals and from poly crystalline specimens was measured at 744°C under a high vacuum using a time average weight loss method. The evaporation coefficient a was computed from the measured flux and vapor pressure data through the relationship J = aPe/21rmkT. The evaporation coefficients for the close packed planes and the poly crystalline specimens were found to be about 0.4 providing tentative confirmation of the theoretical limiting law for evaporation of metal crystals, a = 73(P/Pe) + % . The (110) planes faceted to form (111) planes, resulting in a greater evaporating area and larger a . The evaporation morphology of the plane surfaces and the surfaces of spherical single crystals is described in some detail. RECENTLY a detailed theoretical analysis of the mechanism and kinetics of metal crystal evaporation was made.1'2 A mechanism for vaporization involving the recession of monatomic ledges across a metal surface was deduced, and evaporation rate equations were derived by considering the dynamics of these ledges. In most metals, the process of evaporation is one of dissociation of atoms from ledges, surface diffusion, and desorption. The gross vaporization rate is controlled by the surface diffusion and desorption rates. It was shown that the monatomic ledges, under the action of surface diffusion gradients, tend to assume a terminal velocity and spacing. Further, it was shown that crystal edges and grain boundaries are a ready source for monatomic ledges. In the case of evaporation of large, perfect crystals with clean, low-index surfaces, the kinetic treatment1 leads to a limiting law for crystal evaporation: where J is the gross flux of vaporization, a is the evaporation coefficient, Pe the equilibrium vapor pressure, m the atomic mass, k Boltzmann's constant, T the absolute temperature, and P the actual pressure of vapor over the crystal surface. Imperfections such as grain boundaries, pores, cracks, and macroscopic steps should have the effect of causing positive departures from this limiting law. Such an imperfection is a source for monatomic ledges, which, near their origin, are closely spaced and thus give rise to higher evaporation rates there. However, under many experimental conditions,' this effect should be negligible due to the relatively low concentration of imperfections. In general, a more important cause of positive departure should be screw dislocations, and the effect of these has been considered in some detai1.2,3 Monatomic ledges emanate from points where the surface is intersected by a dislocation with a screw component normal to the surface. The dynamics of ledges arising from a screw dislocation are similar to those of ledges arising from a crystal edge. HIGH temperature-high pressure techniques have long been used to great advantage in the organic chemical industry, the petroleum industry, and the paper industry. Only recently, however, have these methods been used to extract metals from their ores on a commercial scale. The Chemical Construction Corp., together with interested producers of nickel and cobalt, has done much to develop methods of producing nickel and cobalt powders by the use of high temperature-high pressure techniques.' The Howe Sound Co. is currently operating a plant near Salt Lake City in which the new Chemical Construction Corp. technique is applied to cobalt-arsenic sulfide concentrates. In this method the concentrates are leached in a dilute solution of sulfuric acid under air pressure at a high temperature. Near Edmonton, in Alberta, Canada, the Sherritt Gordon Co. is also using the new method in conjunction with its ammoniacal leach process.' National Lead Co., at Fredricktown, Mo., is operating a process similar to that of Howe Sound. In spite of the rapid growth of high temperature-high pressure hydrometallurgical processes, there has been very little work done on fundamental principles involved in this type of process. Conse- quently the literature lacks any significant data in this field. Oxidation of pyrite,3 sphalerite,4 galena," and recently molybdenite" in alkaline solutions has been reported to some extent. This investigation was initiated, therefore, to broaden the application of high temperature-high pressure hydrometallurgy and also to contribute some insight into the basic mechanisms of oxidation in an aqueous medium under these conditions. In addition to the immediate consequences of these processes much valuable information remains to be learned about fundamental reactions when they are carried out at temperatures and pressures slightly higher than those normally encountered. Leaching of molybdenite by alkaline solutions under oxygen pressure has recently been reported in the Russian literature by E. S. Usataya,6 ho found that leaching rate increased with an increase in the pH of the solution—the strongest effects being observed at a pH of 10—and also with an increase in temperature. Usataya also has reported the formation of a protective film on the surface of the molybdenite when the leaching solution was weakly alkaline, neutral, or acidic. He believes that this oxidation process explains the migration of Mo++ in the oxidation zones of molybdenite ore deposits and the subsequent impoverishment of the ores. Equipment: The high temperature-high pressure reaction unit used in this work was especially designed for kinetic studies of this nature, emphasis being placed on accuracy of measurement and precision of control. As details of the unit's construction and operation have been discussed elsewhere,' only basic features and principles of operation will be discussed at this point.

FRANCE will be given a large portion of the Marshall Plan funds for relief, reconstruction, and industrial development in France and in her colonial possessions. At present that country is not in position to export any large tonnages of the mineral products needed in the United States. However, if, through Marshall Plan aid and private capital investment, production of these products can be largely increased, agreement should be made by which the United States is to get a substantial portion of such increased output in part payment for the material and technical aid they receive. France issued a decree, published in the "Official Gazette" on Feb. 3, 1948, which permits conversion into dollars of dividends derived from dollar investment in Government-approved projects and will agree to a scale of capital amortization to be determined in each individual case. This decree is to encourage private capital to cooperate with local capital in industrial undertakings. The pressure distribution in a reservoir producing an incompressible fluid by radial flow in a horizontal structure is a simple logarithmic function' used daily by reservoir engineers. The assumption of an incompressible liquid is equivalent to assuming that pressure is maintained constant at the well radius and at some external "radius of drainage," or, in other words, that the entire flow into the well passes across the external radius. In most cases a well is surrounded by other wells draining adjoining areas so that the "radius of drainage" is not a line of constant pressure with flow equal to the flow into the well but rather a contour of zero pressure gradient across which no flow occurs, production being due to the expansion of the liquid within the area. The radial flow steady state pressure distribution for this case does not seem to be extensively used despite the fact that the mathematical analysis has been given in detail' and the results are simple and generally applicable. 'The object of this discussion is to develop this result from a physical rather than a mathematical viewpoint, thereby aiding intuition in judging circumstances to which it may be applicable. If the production rate at a well in an unsaturated reservoir is maintained constant while no flow occurs across the outer radius a steady state will soon be reached in which the flow rate or pressure gradient is constant with time at all points in the reservoir. To preserve such a condition it is necessary that the pressure decline at the same rate at all points in the reservoir, that is, the curves of pressure versus radial distance at successive times are all parallel. Then each unit volume of oil is expanding at the same rate and contributing an equal share to the production. The rate of flow q across any circle r is thus proportional to the volume of the reservoir between r and the external radius re, or q = qw (I-r2/r2e) ......(1) where q, is the production from the well and it is assumed that rw is very small compared with re.
