In Archean greenstone belts, ultramafic lavas occur interbanded with basalts, commonly at the base of volcanic-sedimentary cycles. The lavas form part of a recently recognized extrusive rock series, the magnesian series, in which liquid compositions range from peridotitic (33 wt-% MgO) to basaltic (8 wt-% MgO). Rocks of this series occur as peridote, pyroxenite and magnesian basalt flows, and intrusive/extrusive bodies of dunite (49 wt-% MgO) grading outwards into a peridotitic marginal zone. The nickel sulfide deposits are of two main types: (1) basal accumulations of massive and disseminated pyrrhotite + pentlandite associated with some of the thickest and most magnesian (<40 wt-% MgO) of the peridotite flows, and (2) widespread zones of disseminated sulfides in the dunite lenses. Massive sulfide segregations may occasionally occur within the dunites.

US 4,194,729 - Sintering of iron oxide ore on a straight sinter belt. The upper strand of the belt is divided into sintering and cooling sections with windboxes for removing their respective gases. The main for collecting cooling gas is located beneath the lower strand and is connected to opposite sides of the windboxes, while the main for collecting sinter exhaust gas is located beneath the lower strand and connected to sinter section windboxes. IN the copper industry, the year 1942 was one of striving for larger tonnage and increased production. The demands of the war program placed copper high in the list of strategic metals and the Government encouraged production by offering a premium of 5c. per pound for copper output in excess of the 1941 quotas. This had the effect of increasing the tempo of existing operations and also of initiating a number of projects which will eventually result in production from sources not hitherto exploited. No radically new methods of copper reduction were reported.

AT the time flotation appeared upon the metallurgical horizon in Arizona, the writer, under the direction of Dr. Ricketts, was engaged in remodeling and enlarging the No. 6 Concentration Plant of the Arizona Copper Co. at Morenci, and the work had been in progress nearly a year before the Inspiration experiments with flotation had disclosed the revolution in concentration that was at that timè impending. The simplified flowsheet worked out for the remodeling of the Morenci plant had been based upon the removal of the freed metal in a minimum number of stages by treatment upon tables equipped with Butchart riffles, the latter being adapted to accomplish both classification of feed and removal of the metal at one operation, substantially as described in my previous paper.1 The scheme of treatment for the slime was based upon the well-known fact that after copper sulphides, such as chalcocite and chalcopyrite, etc., are reduced to a certain extremely fine state of comminution they are definitely beyond the reach of separation upon any of the concentrating devices then known. By using drag-belt classifiers (which served as conveyors as well as separators), the overflow would be of the usual "slimes" class. Experiment had shown that when these drag-belt overflows were, properly diluted (that is, to about 5 to 7 per cent. solids in the feed under treatment) . the very fine sand, and especially the very fine but still granular sulphide particle&apos;s, would, if given a short distance to fall, quickly settle out in prime condition to yield an excellent recovery on vanners; a further valuable feature would be that the very fine non-separable final overflow tonnage might be discharged direct to tailing, thus conserving space requirements so as to permit within the old building, without embarrass-ment, the increase of capacity required.

Because of unfavorable wetting conditions much residual oil is left when a porous material is Pushed by water. Methods suggested to change reservoir wetting to improve oil displncernrnt efficiency are generally expensitlr. The present 1aborator.y study was undertaken to gain an under.standinx of the factors which determine reservoir wettability, arid to find out if oil displacement efficiency might be improved by a wettahility change accomplished at low cost in on oil reservoir. Contact angle measurements were made on mineral surfaces using sevc.r~zl sets of reservoir oil and water samp1es. Results of the contact angle studies suggest that reservoir wetta-hility may he primarily determined by natural surface-active substances present in the reservoir fluids. The effect of changing sa1inity and pH of the water phase was studied. The re.suits suggest that gross changes in preferential wettability might be acc~o~npli.shed by injection of water containing simple chernicnls to alter pH or salinity in the reservoir. Such treatment could he much less expensive than injection of commercial surface-active agents. Waterflood tests have also been made using synthetic cores and oil and water having wening characteristics similar to those of reservoir fluids. Cores initially oil-wet were flooded in such a way that they were made prefermtial1y water-wct by the advancing flood water. This reversal in preferential wettability achieved greater oil displacement efficiency than when either oil-wet or water-wet conditions were maintained throughout the flood. For the systems studied, the higher the oil viscosity the greater the percentage improvement obtained over conventional waterflood recovery. This suggests that a flooding process making use of wettability-reversal may extend the oil viscosity range over which water flooding is attractive. Because a precise adjustment of reservoir wettability does not seem to be required, and because altering the pH or salinity in some reservoirs may be inexpensive, it appears that a waterflooding process employing wet-[ability-reversal could find .succesful field application. I NTRODUCTION The efficiency with which water will displace oil from a porous material is related to the nature of the capillary forces present. These in turn are controlled by the preferential wetting of the solid by the two fluids. Because of unfavorable wetting conditions, 30 per cent or more of the original oil in place may remain unrecovered in that portion of a reservoir flushed by water. This paper is concerned with the possibility of improving waterflood oil displacement efficiency by alterations in the wettability of the porous material. A laboratory study was made to gain a better understanding of the factors which control reservoir wettability, and to determine if the oil displacement efficiency could be improved by some inexpensive means of manipulating wettability of the porous medium. Contact angle measurements were made with several natural and synthetic oil, water and solid systems (1) to obtain a better understanding of how to duplicate reservoir wettability in the laboratory, and (2) to discover possible means for changing preferential wettability of natural reservoir systems. Flooding tests were also made in synthetic systems to determine if oil displacement efficiency could be improved by those wettability manipulations suggested by the contact angle measurements. Based on these studies a possible method for improving waterflood oil displacement efficiency is presented. This method involves causing an originally oil-wet porous material to become preferentially water-wet during the course of a water flood. The purpose of this paper is to present results of the laboratory studies. THEORY Rock surfaces in some oil reservoirs are believed to be covered with a firmly attached bituminous or other organic coating. Such surfaces would be preferentially oil-wet in the presence of both oil and water, regardless of composition of reservoir fluids. Other reservoirs are believed to contain rock surfaces not permanently coated with such materials, and which would be preferentially wet by water in the presence of water and oil free from surface-active substances. However, when the reservoir fluids do contain certain natural surface-active materials in sufficient quantity, rock surfaces acquire a degree of preferential oil wettability caused by adsorption of these natural surface-active materials on the solid. The equilibrium amount of these materials adsorbed per unit surface area is believed to depend upon their concentration in the bulk liquid phases.

THREE mills are now operated by the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd:: (1) The Sullivan concentrator, Chapman, B. C. (near Kimberley, B. C.), (2) the St. Eugene concentrator, Moyie, B. C., and (3) the Tadanac (customs) concen-trator, Trail, B. C. Differential flotation is the only concentration method employed in all three plants. Tables are used for pilot work only. Flotation equip-ment and control are similar in the three mills, and the flow sheets at the St. Eugene and Tadanac mills, while much simpler, are modeled after that of the Sul-livan concentrator. Successful differential flotation of Sullivan ore com-menced in the spring of 1920, in the pilot concentrator at Trail. During 1920, 193,804 tons were treated by this process. This operation continued without interrup-tion and with steady growth. For the first 7 months of . 1923, which concluded the pilot plant operation, ap-proximately 1100 tons were treated daily. I believe the Sunnyside plant of the United States Smelting &. Refining Co. was the only successful and large scale operation practising differential flotation prior to 1920. in North America. The Sullivan ore, because of its high iron content, was quite a different problem from that at Sunnyside. The entire tonnage of Sullivan ore had to be separated into three sulfide concentrate products-lead concentrate, zinc concentrate and iron concentrate. The choice and arrangement of equipment, and the original flow sheet for the Sullivan concentrator were controlled by the results of the exhaustive pilot mill test. These covered a continuous period of 3 1/2 years and involved the treatment of 1,076,368 tons of Sullivan ore. Satisfactory recoveries are made from feed; 11.0 per cent lead and 7.5 per cent zinc in the form of lead concentrate containing 69 per cent lead, 4.5 per cent zinc, and zinc concentrate containing 3.0 per cent lead and 49 per cent zinc. (The pure zinc mineral in Sulli-van ore is marmatite, &apos;containing approximately 54.5 per cent zinc and 10 per cent iron. It is apparent, there-fore, that 49 percent concentrate is high grade for this particular ore.)

PRESENT enrollment of 182,361 students in the engineering schools of the United States and Canada represents an increase of 6.6 pct over the enrollment in these schools in 1951-52. Thus is brought to a halt the steady decrease in engineering enrollment that began with the close of the 1947-48 academic year, five years ago. The mineral engineering student picture is similarly encouraging. In the United States schools, 9453 students are preparing themselves for positions in the Mineral Industry. This is an increase of 8.3 pct over last year as compared with an increase of 6.6 pct in the total United States engineering enrollment. The rate of recovery for the mineral engineering group is thus more rapid than for the engineers as a whole.

THE distinction btween price reduction as a re-sult of lowering of production cost and price re-duction through unrestricted competition cannot be made too clear, because they are often interwoven in actual experience. Take the whole population of a town whose principal industry is shoe manufacturing as a concrete example. If the manufacturer is able to cut his price per pair in half because he has found out how to make a pair at half the cost, he will com-monly let a number of his men go, because reduction in production cost usually results from substituting cheap mechanical energy for expensive human energy. These people will normally find other employment. The workmen who remain employed usually earn more in dollars than they did before, and in spending it give employment where there was less before. Mining companies that initiate considerable enter-prises in foreign lands where the economic level is low, and where most of the people are busily but in-efficiently engaged in raising enough food to support themselves and their families, often find themselves confronted with an acute labor problem. If any con-siderable number of workers leave the land to work in and about the mines, those left on the land cannot raise enough food to keep them all unless they are taught better methods of agriculture and provided with equipment that will enable them to produce more with less expenditure of effort. Add to this the fact that managers commonly find that the "natives," as our British cousins designate them, usually need more food and a better balanced diet than they have been accustomed to in order to show anything above the lowest order of efficiency in industrial work,. and it is clear that to make a new industry possible in what may be termed an economic province involves increas-ing the productivity, not only of those who are em-ployed in it, but of the whole social group. It has already been pointed out that the employ-ment of large numbers of men in automobile manu-facture is only possible because the others have in-creased their productivity enough to turn out every-thing else that is needed without the help of the auto-mobile workers.

LIKE a runner catching his second wind, the mining geologist in 1944 has had some opportunity to appraise the result of three years of active and intense search for the metallic sinews of war and peace. The war period has been one of physical activity and accumulation of new data but has not so far resulted in the announcement of any profound or revolutionary theoretical concepts or techniques. Most technical publications during the year have been either descriptive or statistical. A review of accomplishments during the war years, although affording some measure of satisfaction in individual cases or regarding production of certain metals or&apos; ores, is far from justifying any feeling of complacency regarding the growth of the profession either in fundamental knowledge or in application. During 1944 an abundant supply of all metals and minerals flowed steadily to smelters and fabricating plants. Also, during this and preceding years, adequate stock piles for war needs, in view of the improved foreign and domestic supply situation, were accumulated in many metals in such quantities that the mining industry has become concerned not with the problem of supply but with the effect these accumulated stocks, if maintained, might have on the postwar market. These considerations culminated in the enactment by Congress of the Surplus Disposal Act, which, admittedly a tempo-

AT the Morenci branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, of which Frank Ayer is manager, several new types of machines that have been developed by Charles Mitchell, shop foreman in the drill steel shop, invite comment for their time and labor-saving qualities. Foremost of these is an adjustable gage-block and gaging device for attachment to drill-sharpening machines, developed and patent applied for by Mr. Mitchell. It replaces the blocks on the standard Ingersoll-Leyner drill steel sharpener No. 5. Features of the device are gage blocks with a flat surface which can readily be removed when worn and planed in any flat planer; blocks that can be adjusted with a templet to give a far more accurate gage than was formerly possible; and a center stop that is adjustable and can be accurately set to center any standard size drill steel.

Single crystals qf copper in "single slip" orientatiorzs have been deformed in compression. During defortnation all of the independent deformation parameters have been measured. These parameters consist of thefive strain components and three components descrihing the lattice rotation. By a finite strain analysis these pararmeters , forrming a deformation gradient martrix, are related to the amounts of slip on each of the twelve slip systems. The results show that the amount of secondary slip is about equal to the amount of primary slip. This is an order of magnitude larger than has been believed previoutsly. ACCORDING to early theory and experiments, when a single crystal of a fcc metal is deformed in tension or compression it should deform by slip on only one slip system until the stress axis reaches a symmetrical orientation.&apos; However. the observation of a large increase in the secondary dislocation density during ..single slip" makes it clear that some slip does occur on secondary systems. Knowledge of the amount and distribution of this secondary slip is essential to a complete understanding of the mechanisms of single-crystal deformation. Ahlers and Haasen 2 and Mitchell and Thornton1 have tried to detect the amount of secondary slip in single crystals of silver and copper, respectively. Each simultaneously measured the angle A, between the tensile axis and the primary slip direction and the length 1 of a gage section of the specimen after incremental amounts of deformation in tension. The measured A, was then compared with the theoretical single slip angle hp. given by sin Ap = j sin . hO where ?o was the initial angle between the tensile axis and the primary slip direction and lo was the initial gage length. In both sets of experiments a small but systematic difference between ?e and ?p was found. This difference must be due to the occurrence of secondary slip. However, as Mitchell and Thornton1 pointed out. nothing quantitative can be said about the amount and distribution of this secondary slip from the measurements that they made. The reason that no quantitative conclusions could be made is because no unique solution for the distribution of slip on the twelve fcc slip systems can be determined from only two measured deformation parameters such as A and 1. There are, in fact, eight independent macroscopic deformation parameters that can be measured when a single crystal undergoes a homogeneous deformation. Physically these can be thought of as the five finite strain components and the three angles describing the crystal lattice rotation. All eight of these parameters were measured by Taylor4,5 for aluminum deformed in tension and compression. At that time the concern was to show that slip occurs on {111 (110) systems in fcc metals, and the mathematics were not available to determine what slip distributions were compatible with the measurements. In this paper the mathematics6,7 are developed that allow the slip distribution to be determined from these measurable macroscopic deformation parameters. The analysis is applied to the measurements of the strain and lattice rotation of copper single crystals deformed in compression. The results show that the amount of secondary slip is an order of magnitude larger than had previously been thought. CRYSTALLOGRAPHIC DESCRIPTION OF A HOMOGENEOUS DEFORMATION The deformation of a solid body can be represented by a transformation matrix F that transforms the un-deformed state into the deformed state. Consider a vector X connecting two material points in the unde-formed material and the vector x connecting the same two material points after deformation, where both vectors are referred to the same set of Cartesian axes. RECENT studies have indicated that there may be considerable difference in the cleanliness of the central pipe cavity of open top ingots. It has been speculated that some of this difference arises becausk of reactions that occur during reheating in the blooming mill soaking pits. In this respect, it has been recognized that an oxide coating or flow of slaggy material in the cavity could inhibit welding during hot rolling and thus reduce the amount of sound product which may be obtained. This note is intended to summarize some observations on the structure of a split ingot top which may be useful in describing a mechanism whereby the shrinkage cavity could be oxidized during reheating. A 221/2x241/2 in., big-end-down, test ingot was secured from a routine production heat. The chemical analysis representing this ingot is as follows: 0.08 pct C, 1.04 pct Mn, 0.062 pct P, 0.315 pct S, and 0.02 pct Si. Silicon films have been grown by chemical reaction on (111) silicon substrates. The surfaces were examined by various microscopic and interfero-metric methods. Surface structures are classified into two groups depending on whether the angles between the bounding planes and the (111) surface are small (<3 deg) or large (> I0 deg). A layer-gvowth mechanism is postulated to explain the topography and the influence of growth parameters. Growth proceeds by lateral expansion of the (111) layers in (211) directions, thereby forming steps. The step edges are perpendicular to the direction of expansion and are thus along (110) directions. Step bunching md surface nucleation both play an important role in modifying the flow pattern and in the step regeneration. These are influenced ver?) much by impurities, especially oxygen. Although the growth is a result of a surface-controlled ga: reaction, it is very similar to growth from an impure solution. OVERGROWTH ("epitaxial growth") of silicon is important and widely used. During the past years several investigators have observed various topographical features or so-called faults on the grown films. A study of the surface morphology gives some insight into the growth mechanism. I) EXPERIMENTAL Silicon films have been grown on silicon substrates by a method described by Theuerer.&apos; Silicon is formed by reduction of SiCl, in hydrogen. The rate of incidence of SiC1, was varied between 5 x 10"6 and 2 x 10&apos;4 moles min-&apos; cm-&apos;. The mole fraction of Sic4 in the Hz-SiCL mixture was about 5 x X Both the rate of incidence and the mole fraction were calculated on the assumption that the Hz bubbling through the SiC1, reached equilibrium saturation. Assuming uniform velocity distribution, the linear velocity of the gas in the reactor tube was estimated to be 2 cm sec-l. The temperature of deposition was varied between 1070" and 1260°C. Chemically polished p-type silicon wafers of 20 to 100 ohm cm resistivity were used as substrates. These were within 1/2 deg of a (111) orientation. The thickness of the grown n-type film was determined by two methods: a) measurement of the depth of the p-n junction taking into account the junction shift due to diffusion, b) measurement of the traces of stacking-fault tetrahedra on the (111) plane.&apos; The agreement between the two methods was better than 20 pct. The rate of growth varied between 0.2 and 4.0 pmin-&apos;. The formed films were examined by reflection and light-section microscopy, and by multiple-beam interferometry. Phase-contrast illumination revealed height differences of about 30A. For measuring heights greater than 1 p a light-section microscope3 was used. The resolution by multipke-beam interferometry4 was between 50 and 100A. Crystallographic directions on the surface were determined by X-ray and from the orientation of etch pits and stacking faults as revealed by Dash etch (I part HI?, 3 parts HNOJ, and 12 parts CH3COOH). Some specimens have been investigated by electron microscopy. Platinum-shadowing and carbon-replica techniques were used to show the fine topography and reflection diffraction to determine the structure of the grown layers. 11) RESULTS The topographical features can be classified into three groups. he first group is comprised of fine ridges (striations). The second group consists of structures, which are bounded by planes making angles of less than 3 deg with the (111) surface. They are, therefore, vicinal planes. Structures which closely resemble growth or etch pyramids from the third group would normally be bounded by perfect low-index crystallographic planes. In this case they are deformed. The angles between the bounding planes and the (111) surface are generally larger than 10 deg. The fine ridges are present, even on the smoothest surfaces, as shown in Fig. 1. They are along a (110) direction. The height differences could not be resolved with interferometric techniques. The basic characteristic structures of the second group are depressions and hillocks. These are bounded by three planes, two of them with larger slopes than the third one. The edges between the planes, as projected to the (111) surface, point in (211) directions. The use of stream sediment and soil sampling as an aid in exploration has markedly increased in recent years as more and more attention has been directed to areas that are generally geologically favorable for mineralization but show little outcrop. Numerous ore deposits and many hundreds of mineral deposits that have no surface exposure have been found associated with anomalous geochemical patterns. Sophisticated techniques have been developed to "wring out" of geochemical data subtle information that is pertinent in defining areas of exploration interest. Variations in metal patterns in soils and sediments as they are affected by pH, Eh, weather, topography, etc., are pretty well known. Field studies have determined the variations and controls of metal ion distribution in the several soil horizons and the contributions to metal concentrations made by different types of vegetation. Less well known is how to interpret geochemical data since thickness of soils over bedrock varies in an unknown fashion and, particularly, where glacial debris of unknown thickness is piled on top of soils or scoured bedrock.

P. L. Jones (Sink and Float Corp., New York)—The comparisons between galena and ferrosilicon medium should be applied only to the specific sink-float process used at Mascot since no evidence is presented that allows the comparison to be extended generally to galena medium as now used in other forms of sink-float. It is stated that flotation recovery of galena medium was tried but was unsuccessful and therefore the elaborate gravity system of medium recovery was applied. The expense of the gravity system at Mascot was one of the reasons for changing to ferrosilicon. However two important sink-float plants treating a combined total of over 13,000 tons of ore per day are using flotation to clean galena medium most successfully and are obtaining medium recoveries comparable with those reported in the paper for ferrosilicon. Slightly increased zinc recovery is claimed due to the change-over but it is to be noted that at the time of the change a decreased density differential was obtained in the separator. The annual meeting of the Woman&apos;s Auxiliary was held on February 19, at 10 a. m. The president, Mrs. Sidney Jennings, said in her greeting "it is a matter of congratulation that during the past year when the demands upon women for work of all kinds has been so large our membership has grown from the 50 enrolled at the first meeting a year ago to over 300 today. Some women, when. asked to join the organization, say that they are doing so much work in other ways that they have no time for work in a new organization, but the director for Canada struck the right note in her report when she told us of the splendid work the wives of mining engineers are doing in Canada, as individuals and as leaders and members of various organizations doing patriotic work. We do not want to divert such women from the work they are now doing, but we do want them to enroll as members of the Woman&apos;s Auxiliary and let us know what they are doing, that they play give inspiration to others." Reports were made by the directors of the following sections: Canada, Chicago, Colorado, Columbia, New York, Puget Sound and St. Louis, in some of which sections excellent progress has been made in food conservation, foreign war relief, including the adoption of fatherless French children, and in work for our own engineering regiments. These reports were read, accepted, and placed on file. The reports of the corresponding secretary, of the recording secretary, and of the treasurer, were read, accepted, and placed on file. Various amendments to the Constitution were proposed and accepted, and copies of the Constitution, as amended, will be mailed to all the members of the Woman&apos;s Auxiliary.

INVESTIGATORS in the areas of plasticity, crystal growth, and stress analysis have a need for crys-tallographic data such as the interplanar angles. This information is utilized in the form of a stereo-graphic projection from which orientation determinations can be made. Calculations of mechanical properties, such as the critical resolved shear stress, require values for the angles between directions as well as the interplanar angles. Only a limited amount of this data is available for tetragonal crystals. The equations for these angles are relatively simple but because of the large numbers of angles involved and the infinite number of structures that could be investigated, it was decided to program these calculations on a high speed digital computer. THE papers presented at the geophysics session" on Feb. 17 were concerned largely with three aspects of the science. The first ones dealt with the transmission of elastic waves through the earth, then electrical methods came in for their share of attention and finally, the question of the teaching of geo- physics came up for the first time at these meetings. Also, for the first time, there was a symposium of mining men on the practical value of the new science. The paper (T. P. 267) entitled "Seismic Propagation Paths" was presented by Donald C. Barton in the absence of the authors. It dealt with an investigation of the speed of propagation of seismic waves. The latter travel in a straight line when proceeding at a constant velocity, but if the velocity increases at increasing depths, the line of travel becomes a curve. Under the assumption of the authors this curve is found to be the arc of a circle, and their paper gives calculations for reflected and refracted wave paths under these circumstances.
