THE Engineering Education group began its sessions Tuesday morning, Feb. 16, as a Committee and wound up the day as the Institute's fifth " Division." C.II. Fulton presided. The first paper for discussion was entitled "Teaching Management in Engineering Schools,"' by Eugene McAuliffe, president of the Union Pacific Coal Co., space for which may be found later in these pages. In it, Mr. McAuliffe argued that an engineering student should be taught the knowledge of men, much as a medical school teaches surgery. He then went on to indicate, out of the wealth of his administrative experience, the problems an executive needs to be equipped to handle, and said that every student engineer should look on himself as a potential manager.

William Andrews Clark, former United States senator from Montana, died at his home in New York on March 2, at the age of 86, after a brief illness due to pneumonia. He was the last of the three great Montana mining magnates, Clark, Daly and Heinze. He was born in Connellsville, Pa., on Jan. 8, 1839, and in 1863 arrived in Bannock, Ida., with only five dollars, after a journey of 65 days. On reaching Idaho, he became successively a miner, teamster, machinist, railway builder, mine owner, capitalist and, in his more recent years, philanthropist and art collector.

The Institute is custodian of funds for support of numerous gold medals and prizes and has representatives on boards awarding still others. Details regarding the Institute Awards are given below. The Institute is represented on the boards of the John Fritz Medal, the Hoover Medal and the Washington Award, in connection with the three national societies of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering; and, also, in the case of the Washington Award, with the Western Society of Engineers. Robert W. Hunt Medal and Prize THE partners of Robert W. Hunt established a fund which was presented to the Institute at a fitting ceremony on May 27, 1920, to establish an annual medal and a sum of money to be awarded under the following rules: 1. The award shall consist of two prizes: first of a gold medal, second of a sum of money; a certificate to accompany each prize. The money prize shall not be awarded to a member over 40 years of age, but under unusual circumstances, both prizes may be allotted to one person provided that he is not over 40 years of age. In general it will be understood that the Committee shall award the money prize to the younger men, rather than the medal. 2. The awards shall be made not oftener than once a year to that person or persons contributing to the Institute the best original paper or papers on iron and steel. The scope of the term "iron and steel" shall be determined by the subcommittee considering the awards. In general, papers dealing with the practical side of the subject have preference over those dealing with the theoretical side in recognition of the fact that Captain Hunt's main contributions to the industry have been in the improvement of production and quality of material. 3. A subcommittee of three to five, including the Chairman of the Iron and Steel Division, shall be appointed by the Iron and Steel Division annually to adjudge the award subject to approval. 4. The awarding committee shall submit its report to the Iron and Steel Committee at its October meeting, and the award shall be certified to the Secretary of the Institute in time to permit the presentation to be made at the Annual Meeting of .the Institute. 5. The recipient of the award shall be designated "The Hunt Medalist." Awards of the medal have been made as follows: 1920—-Robert Woolston Hunt. 192G—John A. Mathews. 1926—Charles Lewis Kinney, Jr. 1929—Edgar Collins Bain. 193G—James Aston. Awards of the prize have been made as follows: 1928—C. H. Herty, Jr. 1929—William E. Griffiths.

The kinetics of cetnentation of copper with iron were observed to follow first-order kinetics and increase with speed of agitation to a limiting value. Maximum rates agree closely with theoretical values based upon a model of aqueous solution diffusion through a litniting boundary film. Back reaction kinetics are shown both theoretically and experimentally to be independent of ferrous iron concentration in solution. The inlportance of attnospheres of air, oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen was studied and the results have been correlated with several impovtant oxidation processes involving metallic iron and copper. The kinetics of the reaction of ferric ion with metallic iron were found to be slow in the absence of metallic copper and essentially proportional to the surface area of metallic copper present in the system. THE precipitation of copper on iron is classic as an example of a relatively ancient art applied successfully for centuries with little fundamental understanding of the important parameters involved. There is some indication that the process has been a commercial means to produce copper since the sixteenth century.' The amount of fundamental work on the cementation of copper with iron is not great. Wartman and Roberson2 carried out a series of detailed copper cementation experiments using natural and synthetic mine water. The following were presented as the three principal reactions: Reaction [I] is the desired cementation reaction and accordingly 0.88 lb of iron would produce 1 lb of copper. In actual practice iron consumption would more normally fall in the range of 1.5 to 2.5 lb per lb of copper. Wartman and Roberson attributed the excess consumption of iron to Reactions [2] and [3]. They found that Reactions [I] and [2] proceeded at approximately the same velocity while Reaction [3] was much slower and would be diminished by controlling the contact time. It was also pointed out that increased agitation is beneficial in removing hydrogen bubbles and barren layers of solution at the iron surface as well as removing contaminants resulting from the hydrolysis of iron. Episkoposyan3 and Episkoposyan and Kakovskii4 studied copper and silver cementation on rotating iron disks in chloride solutions. The kinetics based upon a diffusion model were first order and varied linearly with surface area and with angular velocity raised to the one-half power according to the Levich equation. The experimental activation energy for both copper and silver was approximately 3 kcal per per mole. Excess iron consumption was found to increase with temperature. The rate of cementation first increased with increasing acidity and then diminished at high acid concentrations. sutolov5 has presented an excellent review of the Leach-Precipitation-Flotation (LPF) process including a discussion of copper cementation from an electrochemical point of view although few experimental results were presented. From voltage considerations he predicted that cementation should not be influenced by the concentration of ferrous iron in solution. He considered several secondary reactions including Reactions [2] and [3] and pointed out the importance of oxidation of ferrous iron to ferric with oxygen. In addition it was suggested that Reaction [2] was enhanced by the dissolution of metallic copper by ferric iron which in turn consumed excess iron by the cementation reaction, Eq.[1]. Cementation of copper on metals other than iron has been studied by several investigators but, as in the case of iron, the amount of fundamental work is not extensive. Bashkova and kovalenko6 and Bashkova7 studied the cementation of copper on indium from copper and indium sulfate solutions. The rate was found to be first order and to increase with acidity. This was associated with a decrease in potential (EIn — ECu) and the simultaneous reduction of hydrogen ions at low pH. The rate of cementation also decreased with increasing indium concentrations which was postulated to be due to the decrease in the rate of diffusion of the ions in solution. Below 97°C the experimental activation energy was found to have the unusually low value of 2 kcal per mole and was attributed to diffusional control. Above 97°C the rate increased suddenly and was explained as a change in the rate-controlling step to a chemical reaction. In Part I of this study Nadkarni et a1 .1 have reported on preliminary results obtained in a laboratory study of the kinetics of the cementation process. The rate was found to be first order, proportional to the surface area of the iron, and to increase with speed of stirring until a maximum rate was observed. At low stirring speeds the deposit was spongy and adherent. At medium speeds the copper peeled off in bright strips and at high speeds finely divided copper was produced and continually removed from the surface. The amount of excess iron consumed increased with speed of stirring and with temperature. The average experimental activation energy combining results from several types of iron was 5.8 + 1.6 kcal per mole suggesting diffusional control through a limiting boundary film. Traditionally copper cementation has been carried out over the centuries in gravity-fed launders of various design containing scrap iron. DURING 1937 the subject of mining geology was probably given more attention and more mining geologists were usefully employed than at any previous time. Of the many contributing factors the most important were: (1) a higher degree of prosperity in many countries, (2) a. better understanding of geologic phenomena, and (3) the apparently diminishing reserves of several important minerals. Mining companies have come to look upon geology with a growing appreciation of its aid in the more effective exploration and exploitation of mineral deposits. Most of the larger and more active companies have one or more geologists permanently attached to their staffs and some have well organized and efficiently managed geological departments. Even the smaller companies, who feel they cannot afford to employ a geologist on a permanent basis, are seeking the advice of competent men in this field with increasing frequency. One of the most significant trends has been the growing tendency to base exploratory work on more thorough geologic studies instead of empirical "hunches,"on which so much off the work in the past has relied. Likewise, mining companies are apparently more willing to expend larger sums on the basis of geologic possibilities in a district.

Let's start at the beginning, Mr. Turner. Where and when were you born? In Lansing, Mich., on July 31, 1880. And what was your education? I went to the University of Michigan, where I got an A.B. degree in 1902; then to the Michigan College of Mines at Houghton, graduating from there in 1904 with a B.S. and an E.M. What was your first job in the mining industry, Mr. Turner, and what were you paid? In the summer of 1902, 1 was a field assistant for the U. S. Geological Survey in southwestern Idaho and southeastern Oregon, working under Israel C. Russell, professor of geology at the University of Michigan, who incidentally, had just returned from an expedition to study the effects of the eruption of Mt. Pelee, on Martinique. I was paid $60 a month and found; in addition to doing geologic and hydrographic work, I cooked many of the meals for a party of four, and wrangled four horses. I slept for four months under the stars, without a tent.

EVERY engineer and user of wire rope is desirous of information that will enable him to determine whether the performance of any particular piece of rope is satisfactory, and what conditions can be changed so as to increase the life of a rope. In most cases, it is far from easy to analyze the conditions of service and tell which is the greatest factor in determining the life of wire rope. If we start on a layout for an entirely new rope system, the task of making conditions satisfactory is simplified so far as the engineering details are concerned; but if the plant requiring wire rope is in operation, any change is likely to involve the expenditure of consider-, able money to replace and change over machinery that must be kept in constant operation, because a large monetary loss will result from a shutdown for even a few days. Often wire rope is kept operating under bad conditions, as the user thinks that it is cheaper and quicker to replace the rope than to make alterations in the hoisting machinery. A typical case is a metal mine operating in what is now almost the center of a large mining city, where it owns a few acres of mineral rights. It was expected that the shaft would go to a depth of 1000 ft. (305 m.), so a moderate sized rope, about 1 ¼ in. (31.7 mm.), was used on a 6-ft. drum with a 7-ft. head-frame sheave and rather short lead from drum to head sheave. This mine has gone deeper each year until, it is now 2500 ft. deep and the rope speed has been increased from 1500 ft. per min. to over 3000 ft. The original rope just filled the drum in one layer, now it overwinds three layers. The original ropes were probably 6 X 19 crucible steel and lasted from 12 to 18 mo.; now, the highest grade plow steel is used, yet the average service is only about 6 mo. The cause is not hard to find. If the engineers had known at the outset what would be done with this hoist, the design would have been very different. Conditions at this mine, from a wire rope standpoint, have gradually become worse and it is difficult to see how rope service on this hoist can be com-pared with the service of previous years with any fairness to the wire-

IN a previous publication1 1200°C isothermal phase diagram sections were given for the Cr-CO-Ni, Cr-Co-Fe, Cr-Co-Mo, and Cr-Ni-Mo ternary systems, in which the a phase formed narrow, elongated solid solution fields. The present investigation is concerned with the 1200°C isothermal sections of the Co-Ni-Mo, Co-Fe-Mo, and Ni-Fe-Mo ternary systems. A prominent feature of these systems is the presence of narrow, elongated µ phase fields. The crystal structure of the phase designated as µ both here and in the previous publication1 was determined by Arnfelt and Westgren.2 For the (CO, W)µ phase, named by them Co,W, (and also frequently designated as a), these authors found that the crystal system is hexagonal-rhombohedra1 and the space group is D53d — R3,. Westgren and Mag-neli3 later found that isomorphous phases exist in the Fe-W and the Fe-Mo systems (these phases are often referred to as < and E, respectively). Henglein and Kohsok4 stated that the phase described by them as Co7Mo,; (otherwise frequently designated as c) is also isomorphous with the above three. The Co-Fe-Mo system was investigated at 1300°C by Koester and Tonn,5 who found a continuous series of solid solutions between (Co, MO)µ and (Fe, MO)µ Koester6 also indicated similar uninterrupted solid solutions in the Ni-Fe-Mo system. However, since the Ni-Mo binary system does not have a phase isomorphous with F, Koester&apos;s diagram is expected to be erroneous. No data appear to be available in the literature concerning the Co-Ni-Mo system. The face-centered cubic (austenitic) solid solut,ions of iron, nickel, and cobalt, which are quite extensive in all three systems at 1200°C, are here designated as the a phase. The body-centered cubic (ferritic) solid solutions, based on iron, are designated in this report as the ? phase, in conformity with the nomenclature used previously.&apos; Experimental Procedure The alloys were prepared by vacuum induction melting in zirconia and alumina crucibles. The lot analyses for the metals used have been given.&apos; The number of alloys prepared was 46 for the Co-Ni-Mo system, 65 for the Co-Fe-Mo system, and 113 for the Ni-Fe-Mo system. The compositions of these alloys were selected with due regard to maximum usefulness in locating phase boundaries. The alloy specimens were annealed at 1200°C in an atmosphere of purified 92 pct helium and 8 pct hydrogen mixture. Alloys consisting almost entirely of the face-centered cubic austenitic a phase, or of the body-centered cubic ferritic c phase were double-forged with intermediate annealing. The double-forged specimens were then final annealed for 90 hr at 1200 °C and quenched in cold water. Alloys containing considerable amounts of any of the other phases could not be forged. Such specimens were annealed for 150 hr at 1200°C and quenched. Microscopic specimens of all alloys were prepared by mechanical polishing, in many cases followed by electrolytic polishing. Description of the polishing and etching procedures used and tabulation of the intended compositions of the alloys prepared are being published in two N.A.C.A. Technical Notes.7,8 , Many of the alloys were analyzed chemically and, in general, the results are in excellent agreement with the intended compositions. X-ray diffraction samples were prepared by filing or crushing homogenized alloy specimens and by reannealing the obtained powders in evacuated and sealed quartz tubes. After annealing for 30 min at 1200°C the tubes were quenched into cold water. X-ray diffraction patterns were made with unfiltered chromium radiation at 30 kv, using an asymmetrical focusing camera of high dispersion. X-ray diffraction and microscopic methods were used jointly to identify the phases present in each specimen. The amounts of the phases in each alloy were estimated microscopically. The phase boundaries were located by the disappearing phase method. The results were used to construct 1200°C isothermal sections for the three ternary phase diagrams. The accuracy of the location of the phase boundaries determined in this manner is estimated to approximately ±1 pct of each component. The portion of the three phase diagrams lying between the µ, P, and 6 phases on the one hand, and the molybdenum corner on the other, has not been investigated. Recently Metcalfe reported0 a high temperature allotropic form of cobalt on the basis of dilatometric results and of cooling curves. In the present work no attempt was made to search for the new phase in the cobalt corner of the Co-Fe-Mo and Co-Ni-Mo systems. No alloy was prepared with more than 80 pct Co; the alloys used were intended to locate the boundary of the a phase saturated with cL. The microstructures of the quenched a alloys near the cobalt COrner gave no suggestion of an in-suppressible transformation On quenching. The location of the boundaries of the a + ? two-phase fields in the Fe-Ni-Mo and Fe-CO-MO systems was determined entirely by the microscopic method. The face-centered cubic a alloys near the ? field transform partially or wholly into the body-centered cubic ? phase on quenching from 1200°C to room temperature. The ? formed in this manner has an

IN OPERATING the Alpha mine of the Consolidated Coppermines Corp., Kimberly, Nev., it was necessary to pump out approximately 1200 gallons of waiter per minute to prevent the mine being flooded. There were three levels in the mine at which water accumulated and from which it was pumped, the 1200, 1400 and the 1800- ft. levels. At each, the pumping equipment was installed in duplicate so that if for any reason one unit was out of commission the other would be available to prevent flooding. The two centrifugal pumps at the 1200-ft. level were 600 hp. each; at the 1400-ft. level, 100 hp. each; and at the 1800-ft. level, 300 hp. each.

The various methods based on solution models for obtaining free energies of mixing from miscibility-gap data have been applied to a number of binary-alloy systems. For nine of these systems there exist experimental thermodynamic data that permit a comparison of the results to experiment. It was found that the method of van der Toorn and Tiedema almost invariably leads to results that are physically unacceptable and that vary drastically with small changes in the miscibility-gap parameters. The subregular solution model is found in all cases, except the Al-Zn, Fe-Cr, and Cu-Pb systems, to exaggerate the free energy of mixing by 30 pct or more. The model developed by Lumsden is found to give results that are often in excellent agreement with experiment and which exaggerate the free energy of mixing by no more than 30 pct. These results and others give evidence that the Lumsden treatment of the effect of unequal atomic sizes and of imperfect configurational randomness due to deviations of AB bond energies from the mean of AA and BB bond energies is adequate for most systems. ANALYTIC expressions are frequently proposed for the dependence on composition of the activities of the components of a solution. Because the development of solution theory is incomplete, these expressions contain parameters which must be determined by experiment. The measurement of activities is often difficult and consequently such measurements are less readily available than are measurements of phase equilibria which, under certain conditions, can also be used to evaluate these parameters. For example, suppose it is known that two structurally dissimilar phases, each of known composition, in an n-com-ponent system are at equilibrium at a given temperature and pressure. n equations can be set up in terms of these parameters expressing the equality of the chemical potential of each component in the two phases. In addition, one can write the Gibbs-Duhem equation for each phase that also contains these parameters. Thus, if these n + 2 equations contain n + 2 parameters, these parameters can be determined (at the temperature in question) from the phase diagram alone. If the average number of parameters in each expression for the activity of a given component in a given phase is V then there will be 2nV parameters involved. Equating 2nV to n + 2 shows that, for n + 2, V = 1. If the temperature dependence of each parameter were to be expressed in some explicit form one could use equilibrium conditions at a number of temperatures to increase V. The situation is much improved when the two phases in equilibrium are structurally similar. It can then be assumed that, stably or metastably, two phases will become one at higher temperatures. Thus the number of parameters involved becomes nV instead of 2nV. Hence, V = 2 for n = 2 using only one temperature. (It is implied here that the activity expressions used are valid over the entire composition range.) In this investigation only the equilibrium of two structurally similar, two-component phases (miscibility-gap systems) will be considered. The various proposed solution models will be applied to a number of these systems and the results compared with available experimental results. All of the analytic expressions that have been proposed for the free energy of mixing of a two-component system are of the form where ?Gmix is the free energy of mixing per mole of solution, N1 and N2 are the mole fractions of components 1 and 2, respectively, and f(Ni, T) is some function of composition and temperature. In the "ideal" solution model f = 0. In the "regular" solution model f = a constant. Since these two models permit only a symmetric equilibrium diagram they will not be considered further here. The simplest model that permits a nonsymmetric miscibility envelope is the so-called "subregular" solution model proposed by Hardy.1 This model gives where the Ci(T) are functions of temperature only. The same expression for f is obtained from the "linear a function" model proposed by Darken and Gurry2 and applied to miscibility-gap systems by Wriedt.3 This model requires that the a function defined by be a linear function of composition (yi is the activity coefficient of component i). This model is not purely hypothetical for it has been found2 to hold true for a number of systems. It is readily shown3 that the f(Nl, T) obtained from this model is of the form given in Eq. [2]. It will be noted that the subregular solution model contains only two parameters and hence both of them can be determined at any desired temperature below the critical temperature, Tc, for a miscibility-gap systems in the manner described previously. (communication to the Secretary*):— Formerly it was the general practice of engineers to designate coal that is free from moisture and ash as " combustible," notwithstandirig that it contains oxygen and nitrogen. The origin of this practice was more particularly due to the requirements in connection with boiler-testing, which demanded a consideration of that portion of the fuel which took part in the combuition-process because results based on a unit of either moist or dry coal were not comparable, since both moisture and ash were recognized as variable quantities. Thus, a pound of " combustible " became a standard of value, and was treated as a constant before employing measurements of heating-power and calculating therefrom the percentage of efficiency. The recognition of this term " combustible " was an advance to be credited to the engineer rather than to the chemist, because the latter, not having to do with the interpretation of analyses in practice outside the laboratory, usually saw no reason for reporting results in terms other than those of the moist-coal composition. Some years ago I needed a table of fuel-composition in terms of moist, dry, moisture-free and ash-free coal, and of the combustible components. This table required the use of the word combustible in its proper sense, for the purpose of designating carbon, hydrogen, and sulphur, instead of including these three elements with oxygen and nitrogen, to which aggregate the term combustible was formerly applied. To make such a tabulation involved either the use of the inconvenient and cumbersome term, "ash- and moisture-free coal," or of some other representative term, and for this purpose I adopted the expression pure coal, which is short, simple, convenient, and technically correct. Two reagents have been proposed for the commercial extraction of copper from leach liquors, namely LIX64N produced by General Mills Chemicals, Inc. and Kelex 120 produced by Ashland Chemical Company. Each of these reagents consists of an active extractant and an additive. In the LIX system, the additive improves the kinetics of the extraction reaction whereas for the Kelex system, the additive acts primarily as a third phase inhibitor. Equilibrium and kinetic studies have been conducted with both systems. In general, the Kelex system effectively extracts copper at a lower pH than LIX64N; furthermore, the rate of extraction with Kelex is considerably faster than with LIX which indicates that systems employing the Kelex extractants might also be able to employ agitated columns rather, than mixer- settlers which are absolutely necessary for effective extraction with the LIX reagents.

Column leach studies of a low-grade porphyry copper ore were made. The technique used involved alternating oxygen absorption and copper leach cycles. The leach solution was displayed from the column with oxygen. The volume of oxygen reacting with the ore was measured with a gas burette. The copper released as a result of exposure to oxygen was correlated with the oxygen uptake. The oxidation rate was found to be dependent on the pH of the solution wetting the particles and was markedly increased by increasing the temperature of the system. Decreasing the particle size of the sample increased the oxidation rate. A material balance on the system indicated 1 mole of oxygen yielded in excess of 1 mole of copper in solution. A discussion of the important parameters is presented and the results are related to dump leaching in general.

Arsenical gold ores occur in many parts of the world, including numerous mines in Canada and the western United States. Free gold is often finely disseminated in the grains of sulfide minerals, arsenopyrite, pyrite, orpiment and realgar. Generally a sulfide concentrate is produced by flotation. Arsenical ores or concentrates are not amenable to direct cyanidation and therefore are considered refractory. A wide variety of roasting equipment and conditions have been used by the mills to remove arsenic and sulfur from these concentrates. The resulting calcine is easy to cyanide and gold is recovered from the cyanide solution by zinc dust cementation. Room-temperature potential-pH diagrams and high-temperature phasestability diagrams are presented to discuss the chemistry of the gold cyanidation, cementation, and roasting steps in the presence of arsenic. The environmental aspects of arsenic discharge are also included.

No review of underground mining should begin with anything but the new world safety record set at the Grace underground iron mine of Bethlehem Steel at Morgantown, Pa., on Friday, November 12. There had not been a disabling injury (an injury which keeps an employee away from his next scheduled shift) for 550 working days. In all, 2,660,080 man-hours had been worked by nearly 950 employees without a disabling injury. The record was wrested from Johns-Manville&apos;s Jeffrey mine at Asbestos, Que. At 3 p.m. Friday, December 3, miner Stanton E. Friend was completely buried under several feet of coarse rock, fortunately sustaining only cuts and multiple abrasions. But with his fall, the accident- free period came to an end at 2,778,600 man-hrs worked without a disabling injury-the new record!

The effect of poisoning on the behavior of platinum electrodes in redox potential measurements in metallurgical systems was studied in the presence of such inorganic surfactants as cyanide and sulfide and such organic surfactants as dodecylammonium acetate, trimethyldodecylammonium chloride, potassium ethyl xanthate, and potassium diethyl dithiophosphate (Aerofloat®). These chemical species represent, more or less, typical constituents encountered in leaching, flotation, and sewage treatment systems. Triangular wave voltammetry was used as the experimental technique to study the nature of poisoned surfaces. Among the species studied hydrogen sulfide and dodecylamine were found to form a resistant surface film affecting charge transfer. Platinum electrodes appeared to have a weaker tendency to adsorb sulfide species in alkaline pH ranges, while cyanide, xanthate, and dithiophosphate affected the normal electrode behavior differently. Possible methods of reactivation of a poisoned electrode by mechanical cleaning are suggested.

Normal dodecyl mercaptan was evaluated as a collector for flotation of sulfide minerals and precious metals. The reagent is from the class of normal mercaptoalkanes (n-alkyl thiols), and is commercially available in the form of a mixture of n-dodecyl mercaptan, the primary constituent, and a water-soluble dispersant, under the trade name Pennfloat™ 3. * Reported are results of bench-scale flotation experiments on many commercially treated base metal and precious metal sulfide ores. Dosages, points of addition, and flotation pH were among the variables studied. Most notable results were increased copper, molybdenum, and precious metals recoveries. Dosages of dodecyl mercaptan on some ores were considerably lower than required for conventional collectors. The reagent was shown to be a highly effective and versatile collector on virtually all of the more than 30 sulfide ore types examined.

AT the meeting of the Institute in New York,, in February, 1880,* I described a process of determining sulphur in metallic sulphides, with especial reference to the determination of pyrites in coal. The process, as then described, is as follows : A solution of sodium hydrate, of 1.25 specific gravity, is saturated with bromine. If an excess of bromine is used it must be neutralized by the addition of a :little more sodium hydrate. The pulverized mineral or coal is moistened with 25 c.c. of this solution and heated, then hydrochloric acid is added cautiously to just acid reaction. This operation is repeated with another 25 c.c. of the alkaline solution, and again rendered acid. The mixture should be kept hot.
