SINCE Davenport and Bain' introduced the isothermal transformation technique for the study of austenite decomposition in steels, a new field of investigation has opened up. Extensive research has been carried out on many different steels, but relatively little work has been done on eutectoid transformations in analogous alloy systems. The researches of Smith and Lindlief,² Mack,³ and Klier and Grymko²0 on the beta-phase transformation in copper-aluminum alloys, of Hibbard, Eichelrnan, and Saunders4 and Smith5 on the kappa-phase transformation in copper-silicon alloys, of Chaudron and Forester6 on the decomposition of "FeO," and of Wasserman7 on similarities between the iron-carbon, copper-aluminum, copper-tin, and copper-beryllium systems essentially comprise the field. The iron-nitrogen system, in view of its remarkable similarity to the iron-carbon system, is particularly attractive for the study of eutectoid decomposition. The present investigation is concerned with the study of isothermal transformation, proceeding by the familiar nucleation and growth processes, and of martensitic transformation characteristics of pure iron-nitrogen alloys. The kinetics of transformation and the morphology of the transformation products have been investigated, for these must be the factors determining the properties and behavior of the final product. The Iron-Nitrogen System he binary iron-nitrogen phase diagram has been a matter of considerable disagreement among vari01.1s investigators. However, the phase diagram according to Eisenhut and Kaupp8 and Lehrer10 is now considered essentially correct as reproduced in fig. 1. The important values, 2.35 pct nitrogen and 591°C, for the co-ordinates of the eutectoid point (obtained from this diagram and used in the re- search to be described) were confirmed in a concurrent study of Paranjpe, Cohen, Bever and Floe." The eutectoid decomposition involves the transformation of the ? face-centered cubic interstitial solid solution of nitrogen in iron to the a body-centered cubic interstitial solid solution of nitrogen in iron and the ?' nitride of iron. This nitride is essentially the compound Fe,N; it also possesses a face-centered cubic lattice but a considerably larger one than the ?; the nitrogen atoms in ?' are arranged in an ordered way in the centers of the unit cubes.8,10,11 A martensitic structure has also been reported8,12 in iron-nitrogen alloys and was studied in the research to be described here. Materials and Methods The specimens used in this investigation were prepared by nitriding "pure" iron. This iron was supplied by the Westinghouse Research Laboratories and is the product bearing their trade name "Puron"; it contains about 0.04 wt pct total impurities, the major portion of which is oxygen. Chi phase (body-centered cubic, a = 8.89A) was found in as-cast 23 pct Cr-10 pct Mo-Fe alloy as well as in heat-treated 316, 316L, 317, and modified 446 stainless steels. Chi phase resembles sigma phase in its metastability, chemical composition, and brittleness. Microstructure and some of physical properties of chi phase were developed. MOLYBDENUM has been established as a desirable alloying element for the enhancement of corrosion resistance in Cr-Ni steels and creep and rupture strength in high temperature alloys. On the debit side, however, the molybdenum addition has been known to stimulate u formation. When the molybdenum-bearing steels were subjected to prolonged heating at elevated temperatures, losses of corrosion resistance and/or ductility have been observed. Andrews1,2 first found the existence of a new phase among the anodic FeC13 extracts from type 316 stainless steel solution treated and then reheated from 800" to 1100°C. This phase was designated x and was identified by diffraction patterns as of body-centered cubic structure with a value equal to 8.89? and similar to that of a manganese. He found that the x phase in this steel always coexisted with s phase, but failed to distinguish one from the other by metallographic technique. No definite conclusion was drawn regarding the equilibrium temperature ranges of these two phases. The appearance of Andrew's work recalled an un- explained structure observed several years ago at the Allegheny Ludlum Research Laboratories during the investigation of an experimental alloy containing 25 pct Cr, 10 pct Mo, and balance Fe. X-ray diffraction patterns on the as-cast material revealed the presence of a body-centered cubic phase having a lattice parameter of 8.89?. The structure was sufficiently similar to that of y chromium that for a time it was thought that the structure might be caused by the presence of some undissolved electrolytic chromium particles. The alloy as-cast was so brittle that it shattered after the slightest hot reduction by hammer cogging. This paper gives the results of some metallographic and X-ray diffraction studies on x phase as found in several experimental alloys as well as a few molybdenum-bearing commercial stainless steels. The analyses of materials studied were as shown in Table I. Experimental Procedure Metallography: Solid specimens were polished mechanically and etched in boiling 50 pct HC1 solution in order to best delineate x and s phases in the alloys studied. THE Premium Price Plan for copper, lead, and represent, the approach of the Office of Price Administration to the urgent of wartime problem of securing increased output of nonferrous metals. Some of the problems encountered in too operation of the Plan and the considerations which led to it?s adopt it will here he reviewed. The Plan provides for extra payment by the Metals Reserve Co., to mine operators who exceed established quotas of production. Producers are thus directly, compensated for the higher costs of working ores that are not commercial at the ceiling price, although the metal obtained from these ores is directed into regular channels of distribution at the established prices for copper, lead, and zinc. Higher-cost metal is thus available to fabricators and to the government agencies at the regular ceiling price and the dual objective of increased production and table pries is achieved.

The dictionary defines 'jargon' as "barbarous or debased language". This description does not suffice. Quiller-Couch has said, it is "a kind of writing which, from a superficial likeness, commonly passes for prose in these days, and by lazy folk is commonly written for prose, yet actually is not prose at all ". The two main vices of jargon, he says, are "that it uses circumlocution rather than short straight speech", like the Babu who reported his mother's death by saying: "Regret to inform you, the hand that rocked the cradle has kicked the bucket ". Its other chief' vice is that "it habitually chooses vague woolly abstract nouns rather than concrete ones", like the newspaper statement; "He was conveyed to his place of residence in an intoxicated condition", instead of saying, "He was carried home drunk ". Jargon is "an infirmity of speech", it is not journalese, but akin to it. "Like respect- ability in Chicago, jargo4 stalks unchecked in our midst" and renders much technical writing ridiculous. It deals in periphrasis instead of going straight to the point, it loves the abstract rather than the concrete, it dabbles in words of sound rather than of meaning. Avoid it, despise it., if you purpose earnestly to write well. "III literature as in life he makes himself felt who not only calls 4 spade a spade but has the pluck to double spades and re-double." * Jargon is rampant in technical publications. Catalogues and other advertisements are conspicuous offenders, but with these the critic is not concerned, except in so far as such 'write-

AN increased demand for brown iron ore in the Birmingham district during the past 18 months has caused renewed activity both in prospecting and mining these ores. In recent years the production in Alabama has ranged from 41,559 tons in 1932 to 639,351 tons in 1928. During the last 9 years about 83 per cent of the total brown ore produced in the United States has come from Alabama (Tables 1 and 2). PROSPECTING Two methods of prospecting are used in this district: (1) test pits, (2) churn-drilling. Usually there is certain quite definite information on an area to be prospected; some of the indications are float ore such as small gravel or small and large boulders known as "dornicks" scattered over the surface, and ore exposed by erosion in gulleys and ravines, which have cut or eroded through the overburden. Often these natural erosions furnish an indication of the thickness of the ore and to some extent of the area of the ore body.

Progress and improvement continue to be the bywords of a dynamic coal industry. The industry continues to gain strength and expand its horizons in the face of competition from atomic energy and the problems of restrictive legislation. The direct contribution of coal mining and transportation to the national economy is about $3 billion a year ac- cording to a study made by the National Coal Policy conference. Coal remains the backbone of the power industry producing almost two-thirds of all the electrical energy generated by fossil fuels and one-quarter of all the energy consumed in the nation. Power supplied by electric utilities increased 6.9% last year. The chairman of the Federal Power Commission predicted a 7.5% growth rate until 1980 for the nation's electric output. Some 80,500 MW of fossil fired power plant capacity are on order or under construction before 1974, compared to a present capacity, all sources, of about 290,000 MW. The comparable new additions of nuclear power plants is expected to total about 51,000 MW.

The characteristics of successful heap and dump leach operations are first reviewed in a general sense. Then attention is focussed on solution management as the key operating parameter in leaching. The first part of this study includes a detailed conceptual analysis of fluid flow. This identifies the relationships between the flow parameters and the chemical and physical properties of the rock. Then these relationships are extended to practical systems in order to establish optimum application rates and solution distribution methods for heaps and dumps. The study shows that there is a maximum effective application rate, qmax, that can be used without causing solution short circuiting. This rate is a function of the minimum permeability in the heap or dump. The expression for qmax is qmax (gal/ft2/hr)[~]0.9 k (darcies). Here k is the appropriate permeability coefficient. Using this equation, qmax is found to be on the order of 1 gal/ft2/hr (4 cm/hr) for a typical heap or dump leach operation.

The mining district and the town of Tombstone are situated in Cochise County, Arizona Territory, at the northwest end of the Mule Pass range of mountains, in longitude 110°, and latitude about 31 40' N,, upon the right bank of the San Pedro River, from which the town is distant 9 miles east.. It is also 24 miles south of Benson station on the Southern Pacific Railroad of Arizona, and about 40 miles north of the Mexican line. Its altitude above the sen is 4600 feet. The Dragoon Mountains rise across a valley to the northeast, and the Huachuca Range similarly upon the southwest. The country is open, without timber, and the surface, where the mines are opened, is in general gently rolling, and accessible to wagons by. natural roads. The first locations were made in the pear 1878 by the Scheffelin brothers and Richard Gird, the latter being well known among the pioneers of Arizona as a surveyor and miner, who contributed largely to our knowledge of the geography of the Territory in early days,

The solubilities of copper and gold in silicon and germanium have been determined by equilibration of the solid semiconductors with coexisting liquidus phases. The experimental results were combined with estimated activity coefficients of the liquidus alloys to determine the following partial molar enthalpies and excess entropies of solution for the systems: Solubility measurements were also carried out below the eutectic temperature of the copper-silicon system. The partial molar enthalpy and excess entropy of copper in silicon with respect to Cu3Si were determined to be 40.2 ±0.5 kcal per mole and 9.7 i 0.5 cal per mole — OK, respectively. It has been dentonstrated that nu-cleation and growth of intermediate compounds are retarded in copper-silicon diffusion couples. This points out the dangers of determining equilibrium solubilities by dijjusion methods. The kinetics of copper cementation on rotating disks of body and tear-top beverage can aluminum alloys were studied as a function of temperature and copper ion concentration. Both alloys followed the two-step kinetic regions, an initially slow rate followed by an enhanced rate. Experimental activation energy determinations (9.04 to 19.62 kJ/mol) indicated that ionic diffusion controlled the reaction mechanism between 20° and 60°C. At low temperatures (< 20°C), the system appeared to be controlled by the presence of an aluminum oxide surface film. The results of this study showed that cementation kinetics for the beverage can aluminum alloys are similar to those for pure aluminum. It was also found that the chemical removal of the oxide layer is less important for the alloys than /or the pure aluminum system. The characteristics of the resultant copper deposits were studied under a scanning electron microscope, and the reaction kinetics seemed to depend strongly on the nature and morphology of the deposits. In addition, maximum rates occurred when the deposit structures were fine feathery dendrites.

THOUGH recent months have seen a rapid decline in lead-smelting activity and consequent uncertainty as to the future, the first half of the year showed progress in keeping with similar activity in other metals. Demand for scrap increased and various lead-bearing materials found their way to plants producing secondary lead. Some of these materials introduced complications into normal smelting procedure and were the cause of many conferences among plant officials attempting to find the most satisfactory method of treatment. If a blast furnace is to do itself justice it must be run with an open charge. Troubles inevitably result when materials are added to a charge which tighten it up and pre- vent free burning of the coke and con- sequent rapid smelting with a clean hearth This fact has long been recognized by plants producing primary lead, but only recently only it received the attention it deserves.

The death of the eldest of the honorary members of the Institute was not unexpected. Ritter von Tunner had never recovered from the effects of a paralytic stroke received in 1892, and when the same enemy struck again in February of this year the blow was plainly mortal. He passed away June 9th, gently and without pain. Thus ends a career of great distinction and fruitfulness, crowned with fame and love. This pioneer of the age of iron and steel had lived so long and wrought so much that the present generation could scarcely recall the whole category of his services. There can be no more appropriate use of the pages of these Transactions than to honor them with a record of such a life and work, for the inspiration of other lives to other labors. SILICON and its metallurgical uses have been the subject of speculation since the earliest days of modern civilization. The early philosophers, Theophrastus and Pliny, believed that silica was a special form of ice, an opinion that was not seriously challenged until the seventeenth century. The first comprehensive view of the nature of silica was advanced by Lavoisier in 1787. He assumed silica to be an oxide of an unknown metal. In 1808 Berzelius produced ferrosilicon by heating silica, iron and charcoal. Probably the first produc¬tion of crystallized silicon was in 1854 when H. St. C. Deville accidentally produced the material while electrolyzing a double chloride of aluminum and sodium containing siliceous impurities. It is not strange that the early investigators should have given so much attention to silica and silicon, because of the great natural abundance of the former. Although silicon does not exist in the elemental state in nature, it has been estimated that the lithosphere contains approximately 60 per cent silica; quartz and rock crystal are found in practically every part of the world.

A LTHOUGH a considerable number of experi--ti mental investigations dealing with the roasting of sulfide minerals have been reported in the past,&apos;"" the behavior of the single roasting particle does not appear to have received the attention it perhaps deserves. This is understandable in that the natural sulfide counterpart of the slab or sheet of metal normally used in high temperature oxidation studies is difficult to obtain and prepare, and is, in most cases, virtually impossible to maintain in one piece at roasting temperatures. The employment, on the other hand, of static aggregations of small particles in masses great enough to permit evaluation of the roasting reactions by means of thermobalances or gas analyses introduces other complications, such as localized overheating, sintering, and variable gas-solid contact. In this investigation a compromise between the above extremes was attempted. Closely sized (e.g., 30 to 40 mesh) particles of natural sulfide minerals were isothermally roasted, out of contact with one another, in an air-swept system. The progress of the roasting reactions was followed by examination in polished section of the treated particles and by X-ray and chemical analysis of their residual sulfide kernels. In this way some conclusions respecting the mechanism of roasting reactions were drawn. Roasting Furnace—The vertical tube furnace used for roasting the sulfide particles had a heated zone 10 1/2 in. long in which four retractable light gage stainless steel trays were suspended. Each tray, and an accompanying baffle, was mounted on a 2 in. lengtn of 3/8 in. stainless steel tubing. These assemblies were axially suspended on a 30 in. length of ¼ in. stainless tubing, by means of which they could be lifted from the hot zone to a water-cooled brass chamber at the top of the furnace. Since each tray unit could slide freely on the 30 in. tube, any desired number of the trays could be retained in the cooling chamber by the manipulation of a horizontal plunger during a momentary withdrawal of the four trays from the hot zone. Although three heating coils, each equipped with variable external resistance, were employed, it was found impossible to avoid a drop of 10o to 15oC between the temperature at the top tray and that of the lower three. Consequently, only the bottom three trays were used for roasting. Temperature readings inside the furnace were made by means of a thermocouple inserted down the tray support tube at tray levels, and a separate thermocouple, inserted adjacent to the middle heating coil, was connected to a Micromax temperature control unit. Experimental Method—The sulfide minerals were obtained in a form as free as possible from gangue and contaminating sulfides, and were crushed and screened to the required particle size range. The tray assembly was kept inside the furnace during the heating-up period and, when a steady temperature had been reached, the trays were withdrawn. Each tray was sprinkled with from 200 to 500 mg of the sulfide grains, and the assembly was lowered into the furnace without delay in order to minimize the time required to achieve the operating temperature. The furnace top was then clamped into position and the thermocouple inserted down the center tube to the required level. It was found that, when this procedure was used, the trays achieved their former temperature within 2 min, after which time the flow of dry air was begun at a rate of 1 liter per min, and timing of the run was started. At the required intervals of time the trays were successively withdrawn from the hot zone and stored in the cooling chamber by means of the retention plunger. On completion of the run the treated particles were removed from the trays to be set aside for examination. The roasted particles were mounted in Lucite on a Buehler press Operating at a temperature of 140°C

Generally, the mining costs reported for the large open-pit operations in the United States and South America lie within the range of $0.20 to $0.30 per ton of material moved. (These operations have strip- ping ratios ranging from 1.5 to 4.0.) Productivities for the larger North American properties are in excess of 200 tons of material per man shift, while those for the South American operations are less than 200 tons per man shift. The most significant variations in cost are in the categories of haulage and general mine cost. Haulage costs vary, as expected, according to the mine elevation, pit profile, crusher location, and accessibility of a dump area, and general cost variations depend largely on the overhead cost items included in this category. Drilling and Blasting Practice The majority of open-pit copper mine production drilling is performed by rotary drills. Hole diameter varies from 6 in. to 12 in., with 9-in. holes being most common, and penetration rates vary from 35 ft to 60 ft per hour.

The solubility of iron and cobalt in liquid lead, the solubility of chromium in liquid tin, and nickel in liquid silver were determined up to 1300°C in an atmosphere of hydrogen. Liquid samples were taken at different temperatures and analyzed. The data obtained were plotted to show the relationship between log mole fraction of solute and the inverse of the absolute temperature. Resulting values for the differential heat of solution (AH) and the excesspartial molar entropy (S)are: for the iron-lead system = _24,200 cal per mole and AT = 5.0 e.u. for the a phase, and AH = 18,300 and S = -0.1 e.u. for the y phase; for the cobalt-lead system AH = 16,500 cal per mole and AS =0.7 e.u.; for the chromium-tin system AH = 15,600 cal per mole and AS = 8.5 e.u.; for the nickel-silver system AH =18,000 cal per mole and AS = 4.0 e.u. RECENT developments in coating, brazing, and heat transfer have focused attention on specific cases of solid-liquid interaction in metal systems, particularly those involving dilute liquid solutions. One fundamental quantity of interest in such systems is the equilibrium phase distribution between solid and liquid phases. In any effort to fully understand such interactions, one must be able to describe the equilibrium state precisely. Furthermore, in order to develop genera! relations for such systems, one must know the equilibrium state in a number of different cases. This investigation was devoted to a study of the equilibrium phase distribution in four binary systems: solid iron-liquid lead; solid cobalt-liquid lead; solid chromium-liquid tin; solid nickel-liquid silver. The iron-lead system was previously studied by Shepard and parkman&apos; and later by Fleischer and Elliott2 with differing results. Both investigations were carried out by sampling the saturated liquid, and analyzing it chemically. The cobalt-lead system was previously reported by Pelzel,3 who noticed no discontinuity near the transformation. A limited investigation of the chromium-tin system was made by Wlodek and wulff4 using a weight loss method. This work was done in conjunction with the development of a process for coating molybdenum with chromium from tin solutions. To more fully under- stand the kinetics of the process, a more accurate determination of a solubility was desirable. No significant data were found in the literature on the nickel-silver system. Data on the latter system were, however, relevant to the investigation of the corrosion kinetics of copper-nickel alloys in liquid silver as carried out by Harrison and wagner,5 EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE Of the techniques available for the study of such systems the most effective appears to be that of liquid sampling,2,6,7 which is the method used in the present investigation. A schematic diagram of the sampling furnace is given in Fig. 1. Large pieces of solute metal, in excess of saturation solubility, were added to 200 g of the solvent metal, and the entire charge placed in an alundum crucible. Analytical reagent or materials of chemically pure grade were used in all investigations. The crucible was contained in a zircon muffle tube positioned vertically in the uniform hot zone of a Globar resistance furnace. The tube was provided with a number of ports which permitted sampling at temperature and in controlled atmospheres or vacuum; the ports were also useful for evacuation and introduction of gases as well as for thermocouple measurements. A chromel-alumel thermocouple Sheated in a porcelain tube was used for temperature measurements. A purified hydrogen atmosphere was employed in all experiments reported in this paper. An idealized model has been developed for the purpose of studying the characteristic behavior of a permeable medium which contains regions which contribute significantly to the pore volume of the system but contribute negligibly to the flow capacity; e.g., a naturally fractured or vugular reservoir. Unsteady-state flow in this model reservoir has been investigated analytically. The pressure build-up performance has been examined in some detail; and, a technique for analyzing the build-up data to evaluate the desired parameters has been suggested. The use of this approach in the interpretation of field data has been discussed. As a result of this study, the following general conclusions can be drawn: 1. Two parameters are sufficient to characterize the deviation of the behavior of a medium with "double porositym from that of a homogeneously porous medium. 2. These parameters can be evaluated by the proper analysis of pressure build-up data obtained from adequately designed tests. 3. Since the build-up curve associated with this type of porous system is similar to that obtained from a stratified reservoir, an unambiguous interpretation is not possible without additional information. 4. Differencing methods which utilize pressure data from the final stages of a build-up test should be used with extreme caution. INTRODUCTION In order to plan a sound exploitation program or a successful secondary-recovery project, sufficient reliable information concerning the nature of the reservoir-fluid system must be available. Since it is evident that an adequate description of the reservoir rock is necessary if this condition is to be fulfilled, the present investigation was undertaken for the purpose of improving the fluid-flow characterization, based on normally available data, of a particular porous medium. DISCUSSION OF THE PROBLEM For many years it was widely assumed that, for the purpose of making engineering studies, two param- eters were sufficient to describe the single-phase flow properties of a producing formation, i.e., the absolute permeability and the effective porosity. It later became evident that the concept of directional permeability was of more than academic interest; consequently, the degree of permeability anisotropy and the orientation of the principal axes of permeability were accepted as basic parameters governing reservoir performance. 1,2 More recently, 3-6 it was recognized that at least one additional parameter was required to depict the behavior of a porous system containing regions which contributed significantly to the pore volume but contributed negligibly to the flow capacity. Microscopically, these regions could be "dead-end" or "storage" pores or, macroscopi-cally, they could be discrete volumes of low-permeability matrix rock combined with natural fissures in a reservoir. It is obvious that some provision for the inclusion of all the indicated parameters, as well as their spatial variations, must be made if a truly useful, conceptual model of a reservoir is to be developed. A dichotomy of the internal voids of reservoir rocks has been suggested.7,8 These two classes of porosity can be described as follows: a. Primary porosity is intergranular and controlled by deposition and lithification. It is highly interconnected and usually can be correlated with permeability since it is largely dependent on the geometry, size distribution and spatial distribution of the grains. The void systems of sands, sandstones and oolitic limestones are typical of this type. b. Secondary porosity is foramenular and is controlled by fracturing, jointing and/or solution in circulating water although it may be modified by infilling as a result of precipitation. It is not highly interconnected and usually cannot be correlated with permeability. Solution channels or vugular voids developed during weathering or burial in sedimentary basins are indigenous to carbonate rocks such as limestones or dolomites. Joints or fissures which occur in massive, extensive formations composed of shale, siltstone, schist, limestone or dolomite are generally vertical, and they are ascribed to tensional failure during mechanical deformation (the permeability associated with this type of void system is often anisotropic). THE education of adolescents to perform the duties and assume the responsibilities of maturity has been a characteristic of human society since the dawn of history. In the beginning the members of the immediate family performed this function, and in modern life they still have an important part in it. Possibly religion was the first field in which education began to be functional; young people were sent for instruction to a teacher who had a broader and deeper knowledge of the subject than was possessed by the family. It does not seem necessary for our purpose to attempt to determine how, when, or where instruction in the practical arts first&apos; began to become functional, and the brief outline which follows must suffice. The discovery and utilization of mineral substances to improve and maintain the conditions of human living is a practical art, which must have had an almost accidental origin and have been developed by empirical experiments. We do not know, nor would it be useful to try to fancy, how men first learned that they could make use .of mineral substances to their benefit, but how- ever that knowledge was initially gained it was certainly trans mitted through instruction in the family. At first such activities must have been merely a .minor part of the making of a-living, but in time those who excelled found it better to devote them-

Textures of hot-rolled, of cold-rolled, and of cold-rolled and annealed zirconium sheets were determined by use of an X-ray spectrogoniometer. All textures showed a tilt of the basal planes 240" from the rolling plane about the rolling direction. Deformation textures showed the [1010] direction to be approximately in the rolling direction. After recrystalliza-tion, the 111201 direction was approximately in the rolling direction. This texture was sharpened by annealing above the allotropic transformation. Textures of sheet produced by alternately cold rolling and then annealing were less strongly oriented than sheets that underwent severe deformation without intermediate anneals. THIS study of the deformation and annealing textures of high purity zirconium was carried out to supplement an investigation of zirconium and zirconium-base alloys. The spectrogoniometer method of pole figure determination was used and yielded more detailed and precise information than the photographic techniques used by previous investigators. Earlier investigations of the rolling textures of hexagonal metals titanium,1,2 beryllium," and zirconiumL having a c/a ratio slightly less than 1.6 disclosed a rotation of the basal planes from the rolling plane about the rolling direction so that the basal poles were inclined toward the transverse direction, and with one exception,& the [1010] direction was found parallel to the rolling direction. Similarly, hot rolling produced a spread of the basal poles in the transverse direction,2,3,5 With the [1010] direction parallel to the rolling direction. The textures of these metals after recrystallization differ somewhat from each other although still exhibiting the transverse rotation of the basal poles about the rolling direction. Zirconium" was found to have the [1120] direction in the rolling direction, beryllium" continued to have the [1010] direction in the rolling direction, and titanium&apos; was shown to have the [1010] direction in the rolling direction (the cold-rolling texture) when annealed at 1000°F, changing to the [1120] direction in the rolling direction when annealed at 1500°F. It was suggested2 that the titanium retains the deformation texture after re-crystallization, and preferred grain growth at higher temperatures produces the second texture. Annealing above the allotropic transformation temperature did not appreciably change the high temperature recrystallization texture for titanium.&apos; Coarsegrained zirconium showed more spread" in the transformation texture than in the recrystallization texture. The material used in this investigation was crystal-bar zirconium prepared by the iodide process. The major impurity was hafnium which was less than 0.3 pct. The composition obtained by spectro-graphic analysis is given in Table I. The hot-rolled specimen was prepared from a 50-g button of zirconium arc-melted in a water-cooled crucible under an argon atmosphere. This button was enclosed in a welded sheath of soft iron and the ensemble was rolled at 825°C. After each pass the sheath was put back into the furnace to allow it to return to the desired temperature. The zirconium ingot was reduced in this manner to a thickness of about 0.035 in., a reduction of approximately 90 pct. The sheet after removal from the sheath was alternately polished and etched to a thickness of 0.001 in. Cold-rolled specimens were prepared from crystal bar by a series of reductions of approximately 0.010 in. until the sheet reached a thickness of 0.010 in. after which it was cold-rolled to 0.001 in. thickness between sheets of alloy steel. The total cold reduction amounted to about 99.8 pct. Specimens were annealed in an evacuated Vycor or quartz tube. The transmission pole figures were obtained by the quantitative method of Decker, Asp, and Harker6 modified by Geisler7 using an X-ray spectrogoniometer with Cu Ka radiation. Unless otherwise specified all four quadrants were examined with 5" increments along the radius of the pole figure.
