I all of the 14 million tons of kaolin produced in Georgia through 1949 had been mined from a single deposit 20 ft thick, it would represent a mined-out area of less than 1 sq mile. This measure of depletion is in such strong contrast with the large size of the area shown in Fig. 1, from which most of the output has come, that there has developed an optimistic outlook concerning future supplies of kaolin equal in grade to that already mined. Dozens of mines are widely but not evenly distributed within this area, which consists mostly of parts of Twiggs, Wilkinson, and Washington counties. There are scarcely half a dozen kaolin mines elsewhere in the state that have been appreciably productive, although the areas in which they occur may have good possibilities. Most of the efforts to find new deposits, therefore, will be confined to the area shown in Fig. 1, for it is here that the industry has established its facilities, and prospecting is encouraged by relatively numerous outcrops and opened deposits of kaolin. The Ocmulgee and Oconee rivers drain the area. They and their main tributaries have flat, swampy floodplains covered with alluvium and for the most part thickly wooded. The divides between these streams are intricately dissected by the minor tributaries, which are spring-fed in steep-walled, cirque-like heads. Gullying and under-cutting are active along the streams but are partly controlled by unusually dense vegetation. The mean altitude is about 350 ft above sea level, and locally the relief ranges up to 200 ft. The area is near the inner margin of the Coastal Plain, and is underlain by Cretaceous and Tertiary formations. Its general location is shown in black in Fig. 1. The division between the Coastal Plain and the Piedmont plateau is actually a very sinuous line, the fall line, marking the extent to which erosion has stripped the Coastal Plain sediments from the southeastward-sloping surface of the crystalline rocks of the Piedmont. Cretaceous Host Formation The kaolin deposits, which are described in the succeeding section, occur sporadically in lenslike bodies in a thick series of poorly sorted clayey sands constituting the lowermost of the Upper Cretaceous formations, the Tuscaloosa. The basis for this correlation has been reviewed by Cooke.1 The same formation has been termed the Potomac group by Ladd2 and the Middendorf formation by Smith' in reports on the kaolin deposits. In another report, Veatch4 called the formation the Tuscaloosa but correlated it with the Lower Cretaceous. The Tuscaloosa in this area consists of fine to very coarse sands, commonly cross-bedded, which contain widely different proportions of white, pink, and yellow kaolin and considerable white mica. A few of the coarser beds contain quartz grains up to 3 in. in length, with bodies of pure white kaolin of equal size that appear to have been formed by the weathering of feldspar grains in place. In the kaolin-producing area, gravel and cobbles occur mainly at the base of the formation. Fig. 2 shows the relations of the Tuscaloosa and its kaolin deposits to the adjacent formations. Its base, on the eroded surface of the crystalline rocks, dips southeastward 50 to 60 ft to the mile, according to LaMoreaux.5 The upper surface of the Tuscaloosa is also an unconformity,

T SEEMS almost sheer presumption to attempt' to discuss Russia in its present chaotic political and economic condition, and were it not that at least two certain absolute factors are continuously at work, it would be impossible to' even approach the subject with any degree of intelligence. These are the inborn love of peace of the people and the national character of the cooperative movement. The love of peace inborn in the soul of every Russian, the desire to be left alone and to- live his life among his home village surroundings, is probably one of the two greatest factors that will make the continuance of the present conditions of civil war impossible. One army or the other may sweep up and down the country. but the Russian peasant will: remain in his own village if not literally darken out. This love of peace is evidenced by the fact that there is no country where personal safety is greater than in Russia in normal times. I have traveled in many isolated parts, carrying considerable sums of money and persolial equipment that; in itself, would be a fortune to any peasant, and have never even encountered a condition in which the most wildly imaginative person looking for adventure, 01: trouble, could muster up even a suspicion of fear. This statement applies also to Southern Siberia and Northern Turkestan, which are inhabitated by the nomadic tribes of Khirghese origin.

A method and apparatus for measuring gas porosities of rocks are described. The apparatus can be assembled from commercially available components. In principle, measurements are made by volume substitution at constant pressure. The maximum error is not more than 0.3 porosity per cent. Typical results are given. INTRODUCTION Determining the porosity of rock samples is one of the most important and yet most varied types of measurement in core analysis. Among the many techniques devised are the so-called "gas porosity" methods. An old and well known example is the Washburn-Bunting method.' The U. S. Bureau of Mines2-' described and later improved the apparatus for a now widely used method generally known as the "Boyle's law" method. In the present form of the Washburn-Bunting method,' the volume of air in the pores of a rock sample at atmospheric pressure is extracted and then collected in a graduated burette at atmospheric pressure. The volume of air is read directly as the pore volume of the sample. The absolute error in reading the collected volume of gas is independent of the total volume; thus, the relative error is larger when the volume is small, as it is for rocks of low porosity. In addition, the sample after measurement contains mercury, which limits its use for other analyses. The Bureau of Mines (or Boyle's law) method measures directly the solids volume of a sample from which the pore volume and porosity are derived, using a separate measurement of the bulk volume. Gas at a few atmospheres pressure is introduced into a sample chamber of known volume containing the rock sample. The pressure is accurately measured. Following, the gas is expanded into a burette at 1 atm, and the gas volume is read directly. From the initial pressure p, and the final pressure p2 and volume v,, the initial gas volume v1 is calculated using Boyle's law; that is, p1v1 = p2v2. Volume v, minus the volume of the empty sample chamber is the solids volume of the sample. The accuracy of the method is limited, unless corrections are made, by deviations of the gas from the "ideal" gas-law behavior assumed in the simple form of Boyle's law. The purpose of the present paper is to describe a method for measuring the gas porosity of a rock which avoids many of these difficulties. Gas volumes are measured directly with the same accuracy as the bulk volumes. Pressures of at least an order of magnitude larger than those of previous methods are employed to insure rapid penetration of the gas into the sample. While special equipment may be built to apply the method, the porosimeter may be constructed as well from commercially available components. For simplicity, the apparatus described will be referred to as the "Constant-Pressure gas porosimeter". THE CONSTANT-PRESSURE METHOD Fig. 1 shows schematically the arrangement of components comprising the present Constant-Pressure porosimeter. Briefly, the method is one of volume substitution and may be considered a null measurement. Omitting (for the present) some of the operational details, the method of measurement consists of the following three steps. 1. After evacuation, the volume of the measuring system (a ballast chamber, a manifold, two gauges and their connections) up to the sample chamber is filled with gas to a high pressure (- 1,000 psi). A sample of the gas at this pressure is trapped in one side of a sensitive differential pressure gauge to serve as the reference pressure for subsequent steps. 2. The evacuated sample chamber containing the rock sample is opened to the measuring system. As the gas expands into the chamber, the resulting decrease in pressure unbalances the differential pressure gauge. 3. The pressure is restored by means of a mercury volumetric pump. The volume of mercury injected exactly equals the free or void volume of the sample chamber (volume of empty chamber minus the solids volume of the rock within). From the injected volume and the known empty chamber volume, the solids volume is obtained and the porosity calculated. The pressure and the volume occupied by the gas are the same before and after opening the sample chamber. Expansion and compression of the gas are incidental operations and do not enter into the calculation of porosity. By the pressure balancing or nulling, the free volume of the sample chamber is merely substituted by an equal and measured volume of mercury. Since the measurements are at constant pressure, there are no compressibility corrections necessary for the sample chamber.

T HE appointment of Herbert Hoover to the portfolio of Commerce in the President's Cabinet is to engineers the fulfillment of a long deferred hope to have an engineer in high political office and is a matter of congratulation to us for three reasons; because he is a mining engineer who represents the highest type of idealistic engineering effort; because he is a past president of the Institute; and because he has probably a broader grasp of world problems than any other living engineer. Frank A. Vanderlip in the preface to his book "What Happened to Europe" tells of the many interviews he had with the most prominent men in Europe which were made possible for him by his eminence as a banker and by the courtesy of the American ambassadors. He cites by name such well known figures as Austin Chamberlain, Sir Auckland Geddes, Monsieur Delacroix, Monsieur Briand, Mr. Padkrewski, Mr. Venizelos, Colonel House, General Pershing, Mr. Baruch, and many others and says :

A relatively small area in Malaya, about 200 miles long by 40 miles wide, is the most important source of tin in the world. Some tin is recovered in other parts of the peninsula. Of the tin mined, 98 pct is recovered from alluvial deposits. From 1935 to 1941 the average annual world production of tin was 190,000 tons. The average annual production from Malaya during the same period was 62,000 tons or about one third of the total. Other producing countries, in order of importance, were the Netherlands East Indies 34,000 tons, Bolivia 30,000, Belgian Congo, Nigeria, Siam, Burma, China, and a few others with smaller amounts. The serious shortage of tin during the war period was due to the fact that the Japanese were occupying Malaya, Netherlands East Indies, Siam, Burma, and China which, together, formerly were producing 65 pct of the world supply.

QUARTZ of a certain kind, is one of our strategic minerals, and Brazil is probably the one important available source. Crystals of quartz of suitable size and perfection for piezoelectrical application are rare; their most outstanding use is in radio work. Clear quartz, or "crystal," free from twinning, cracks, foreign particles of other disturbing lines of growth, and gaseous or liquid inclusions, is cut into plates which provide excellent control of frequency in broadcasting. The squares or rectangles are less than a millimeter in thickness and ordinarily on the order of 1 in. along each side. They are cut at definite angles with respect to the axes of the crystal, and ground with opposite surfaces parallel. Each small slab must be a section of one crystal, uniform throughout in atomic alignment. The thickness of the chip controls the frequency of a broadcast and it is most important to have the plates oriented and ground with utmost precision. Opposite surfaces are parallel to within 0.001 mm. and expansion or contraction due to the temperature is limited to one part in a million.

PRICES of quartz sold in the United States in 1938 ranged from $1.15 to $36,000 a ton. This startling variation was due simply to the differences between glass sand and rock - crystal, materials that are virtually the same in composition. It illustrates the complexities in qualities, uses, and values of industrial minerals. It is generally stated that mineral deposits are exhaustible resources which can never be replaced when depleted. This statement is no longer true with respect to certain industrial minerals now recovered in increasing quantities from that most inexhaustible of all sources of supply, the ocean. Salt has long been obtained from sea water, particularly on the Pacific Coast, and reference was made a year ago to the large bromine recovery plant at Wilmington, N. C. Now the Westvaco Chlorine Products Corp. is operating a large plant at Newark, Calif., having a capacity sufficient to recover daily from the ocean raw materials that will produce 60 tons of various magnesium products. Lime is used to precipitate the magnesia from salt-water bittern. The products are chiefly magnesium carbonate for chemical uses, periclase and other refractories, and oxychloride cement for flooring.

THE desulphurization of molten iron and steel is a very complicated process. One way to arrive at a better understanding of this process is to break it down into several simpler chemical processes that can be studied individually in the laboratory. For a study of the different factors that influence the equilibrium distribution of sulphur between liquid metals and slags, several simpler equilibria may be investigated. One very important subject is the determination of the escaping tendency of sulphur in the liquid metal and its dependency on temperature and composition of the melt. Several papers in this field have recently been published.', ' Another subject is the study of the sulphur capacity of the slag. A molten slag is indeed complex, and even if sulphur distribution data for a large variety of molten slags may give empirical data about their desulphurizing power, the importance of the individual components is still not quite clear. It is accepted generally that lime is the most important desulphurizing component in the slag. The present investigation has as its purpose to study the desulphurizing power of lime in its standard state, and to provide a basis for thermodynamic calculations of the desulphurizing power of various lime-containing slags. The standard state of lime at steelmaking temperatures is solid calcium oxide, CaO. It can react with sulphur to form solid calcium sulphide, CaS. The relative stability of calcium oxide and calcium sulphide is expressed by the free energy of the reaction: 2Ca0 (s) + S1 (g) = 2CaS (s) + O2 (g) The existing free energy data for this reaction, listed by Kelley5 nd Osborn,' are uncertain to about 10 kcal and are of limited value for a calculation of equilibrium constants. Under the conditions prevailing in a melting furnace, the sulphur pressure may be expressed conveniently by the ratio H,S/H2 and the oxygen pressure by the ratio H,O/H, (or CO,/CO). The desulphurizing power of calcium oxide may, therefore, be studied by the reaction CaO + HIS = CaS + H2O. A study of this reaction may be complicated by certain side reactions: Water vapor and hydrogen sulphide may react. to form sulphur dioxide, and calcium sulphide may be oxidized to calcium sulphate. A thermodynamic calculation shows that these side reactions will be suppressed to insignificance if the equilibrium is studied in the presence of an excess of hydrogen. The apparatus used is shown in Fig. 1. About 10 g calcium oxide and 20 g calcium sulphide (laboratory qualities) were intimately mixed, and some water was added to make a thick paste. The paste was put into a thimble of zirconium silicate, which was placed within the constant temperature zone of a furnace, and capillary refractory tubes were attached in both ends. After the mixture had been heated in dry hydrogen at 1000°C for several hours all Ca(OH), and CaCO, had decomposed and CaSO, was reduced, so only CaO and CaS remained in the thimble forming a porous plug. The mixture was examined by X-ray diffraction after the initial reduction in dry hydrogen as well as after the subsequent experimental runs up to 1425 °C. It was shown that crystalline calcium oxide and calcium sulphide were always present together in about equal amounts. The unit cell edges were found to be 4.80A for CaO and 5.68A for CaS in good agreement with existing literature values." This shows that the mutual solid solubility is very small, and that the compounds are present in their standard states. Purified hydrogen was passed through water sat-urators kept at constant temperature in a thermostat bath. The amount of water vapor saturation was checked by means of a dew point method, not shown on Fig. 1. The gas mixture was passed through the capillary inlet into the furnace, where it was sifted through the porous plug of calcium oxide and calcium sulphide. The hydrogen sulphide present in the outgoing gas was absorbed in a zinc acetate solution and the hydrogen was collected over water. When one liter of hydrogen had been collected, the amount of hydrogen sulphide was determined by iodometric titration. As one molecule of H,O is used for the formation of each molecule of H,S, the equilibrium ratio H,S/H,O would be , where (H,O) is the molar concentration in the ingoing gas, and (H,S) the molar concentration in the outgoing gas. In the present work (H,S) was always very small compared to (H20). In order for the observed H,S/H20 ratio to represent the true equilibrium ratio the gas flow has to be: 1—Sufficiently slow to give a complete establishment of equilibrium, and 2—sufficiently fast to counteract thermal diffusion. Incomplete reaction would give a value decreasing with increasing flow rate, and thermal diffusion would give a value increasing with decreasing flow rate. When inlet and outlet tubes of about 2 sq mm cross-section were used, the observed gas ratio was independent of the flow rate between 15 and 125 cc per min, Fig. 2. T HE production of pure iron by electrolyzing solutions of its salts has been the object of scientific curiosity and research for about 80 years; and in the last two decades a realization of the unusual physical and chemical qualities of electrolytic iron has turned the attention of chemists and metallurgists toward a commercial application of this accumulated knowledge. Thus Burgess and Hambuechen in America, . Cowper-Coles in England, and Fischer in Germany- devised methods, more or less successful, for the electrolytic refining of iron, but none of these processes has yet attained large-scale operation. During the war some interesting ,work was done in France and England on building up worn or defective machine parts by electrodeposition of iron. It remained for the Société "Le Fern in France to carry on the process commercially. For six years Les Fonderies et Forges. de Sainte-Maire et Gravigny and the works of Bouchayer & Viallet at Grenoble have manufactured pure-iron boiler tubes in competition with established practice. The French process originated in the researches of Anthelme Boucher in 1910, and was, not put into operation until several years of experimentation had passed.

IN AN ARTICLE on "Recovering Smelter Dust and Oxide," published in the Engineering and Mining Journal (Vol. 131, No. 2), the authors briefly described some dust-recovery equipment and its operation at a secondary-metals brass-smelting and refining plant. A description of our experience in overcoming certain operating difficulties may prove of interest or value to those who are confronted with some of the same problems or who should equip their furnaces with dust-collecting equipment. The dust loss from reverberatory smelting and refining of brass con¬sists largely of zinc, with smaller percentages of lead, tin, and copper in the order named. At the Kramer plant, the fume discharge from the two stacks amounted to 3 to 4 tons of solids per day, making a dense smoke. With dust equipment in operation, the discharge from the stacks is invisible and approximately 2500 lb. of zinc and other metals is recovered daily thereby from each furnace operating.

CONTRARY to what seems to be the general impression, the island of Cyprus was not named for the metal copper, but the reverse was the case. The origin of the name is entirely lost. The ancient city Kition, the birthplace of Zeno, is supposed to be the same as Kittim mentioned in Gen. x, 4; Jeremiah ii, 10 and Ezekiel xxvii, 6, and Josephus states that this name seems to have been applied to the city and also to the island itself. Cyprus is 50 miles off the coast of Asia Minor. The mountains on the mainland are plainly visible across the sea from where I write six miles from the shore of Morphou bay. It is 200 miles from Joppa the port of Jerusalem, and 250 from Port Said. The shape of the island is like a lizard, the tail pointing directly toward the old city of Antioch near the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean. The island was once heavily timbered. Among the great trees the cedars were said to even excel the famous cedars of Lebanon. The Odyssey refers to it as the "sweet smelling island" and makes other references. But the continual wars of every race and age completely stripped it of its timber, and for centuries it has been woefully barren. There are two ranges of mountains. One borders the north coast and runs out in a slim rocky ridge forming the "tail." The other occupies the southwestern part of the island, the highest point being Mt. Troodes 6600 ft. high, sometimes called Mt. Olympus. Whether or not it be the Mt. Olympus, anyway right around there the ancient gods and godesses frequently "started things." These peaks are in plain sight 10 miles south from where I live.

FUSED quartz is a glass made by the fusion of nearly pure silica. Some confusion in terminology exists but in the trade today "fused quartz" generally refers to the perfectly transparent colorless product made from rock crystal whereas "fused silica" is a white, translucent product made from silica sand. Vitrified silica is the term preferred by purists for all quartz glass, but it lacks the definiteness of -the trade terms. Since the raw materials, methods of production, and properties of the finished products arc different for the two types, the trade terms are preferred. As fused quartz is amorphous, it-physical properties differ greatly from those of quartz crystal. Lacking crystallographic directions and having no piezo-electric properties, fused quartz. of course, has no value for the making of radio oscillator plates; but it does have other valuable and unique properties. Perhaps the 'best known and most useful properties are its extremely low coefficient of expansion and its ability to transmit short-wave ultraviolet radiant energy. THIS investigation was undertaken to determine some of the factors contributing to the embrittle-ment of glass-coated silver wire on heat treatment. The materials used in this investigation were 22 and 23 AWG silver wires obtained from Handy and Harman as "fine quality, soft temper." A wet analysis of one sample showed 99.8 pct Ag. Heats of high purity iron containing 3.1 pct Si and be -tween 0.0003 and 0.0295 pct N were prepared by vacuum melting ad then pouring while in a nitrogen atmosphere with the pressure between 0 and 90 psi. Strip from a heat with 0.0184 pct N underwent complete secondary recrystallization during the final anneal. Heats with less nitrogen had too few Si3N4 particles to restrain normal grain growth, and the heat with higher nitrogen had too many particles to allow complete secondary recrystallization. In the hot-rolled structure, Si3N4 precipitates only at the grain boundaries, with the consequence that annealing after hot-rolling diminishes the ability to subsequently undergo secondary recrystallization. In contrast to this behavior, ALNprecipitates uniformly in the hot-rolled structure. Under 1 atm of nitrogen, Si3N, in 3.1 pct Si-Fe dissociates between 900" and 950°C; the solubility of nitrogen increases from 0.0010 pct at 900" to 0.0030 pct at 1200°C. The solubility of nitrogen in Si-Fe has been the subject of many investigations. Corney and Turkdogan1 heated a 2.83 pct Si alloy in nitrogen and found the solubility, under 1 atrn of nitrogen, to be 0.0019 pct at 900°C. They claimed that Si3N4 did not form in the alloy above 705°C in 1 atrn of nitrogen. Fryxell et al.2 heated samples of 3.25 pct Si-Fe containing 0.0025 pct N over a range of temperatures and then analyzed for total nitrogen by vacuum fusion and for nitrogen in solution by a modified Kjeldahl technique. At 900°C, they reported the solubility of nitrogen in equilibrium with Si3N4 to be 0.0011 pct. pearce9 found the solubility of nitrogen at 900°C under 0.95 atrn of nitrogen to be 0.0017 pct in a 3.06 pct Si alloy. He reported that Si3N4 does not form above 770°C in 1 atrn of nitrogen. Although internal friction measurements have given somewhat higher values for the solubility,4-6 if the solubility of nitrogen is as low as has been reported by most investigators, and if Si3N4 is stable up to at least 945°C at 1 atrn pressure of nitrogen as reported by Seybolt,7 a small amount of nitrogen in properly processed Si-Fe should be effective in promoting secondary recrystallization. The requirement is that in the final heat treatment there be enough small, well-dispersed particles of Si3N4 to restrain normal grain growth. Fast8 has obtained secondary recrystallization by nitriding high-purity 3 pct Si-Fe after hot-rolling to a thickness of 0.118 in., followed by processing to 0.012 in., and annealing. A large amount of nitrogen, 0.076 pct. was introduced during the nitriding heat treatment, but he has since reported9 that "a few hundredths of a percent" is sufficient. Small amounts of aluminum10 or vanadium" nitride are capable of promoting secondary recrystallization. Heats containing as little as 0.010 pct A1 or 0.042 pct V and from 0.006 to 0.009 pct N underwent complete secondary recrystallization at final gage, whereas heats with lesser amounts of aluminum or vanadium did not.l2 To be reported is the behavior of nitrogen in high-purity 3.1 pct Si-Fe, and the relation of this behavior to the ability to undergo secondary recrystallization. PROCEDURE Ingots weighing 1 lb were made by vacuum melting high-purity electrolytic iron (A104, Glidden Co.) and high-purity silicon (Monsanto Co.). The latter was used in preference to ferrosilicon to insure a low aluminum content. The design of the melting furnace permitted pouring with the furnace atmosphere either below or above atmospheric pressure. Accordingly, at the completion of melting, nitrogen was admitted to the desired pressure and the heat then immediately poured. The ingots were sound, with no indication of porosity. In Table I are listed the heats investigated, the nitrogen pressure at pour, and the nitrogen and oxygen contents as determined by vacuum fusion with a platinum bath at 1850°C, a procedure which insures measurement of the total nitrogen.13 In addition, all heats contained 3.1 pct Si and not more than 0.002 pct C, 0.003 pct S or 0.005 pct Al. It was subsequently found that the quantity of nitrogen contained in the heats in Table I does not necessarily represent that obtained under equilibrium conditions. For example, the ingot poured immediately after 1 atrn of nitrogen was admitted to the chamber contained 0.0093 pct N, whereas an ingot poured 3 min after the nitrogen was admitted contained 0.021 pct N and another poured after a 6-min delay contained 0.029 pct N. While some bleeding of the hot top occurred in the latter instance, the ingot when examined in cross section appeared sound. The ingots were heated to 1325°C in hydrogen and rapidly rolled to 0.080 in. in 3 passes. The roll speed of the final pass was reduced so as to increase the quenching effect of the rolls. The hot-rolled pieces were processed both as-hot-rolled and after heating for 3 min at 900°C in hydrogen. After cold-rolling to 0.026 in., the strips were heated for 2 min at 900°C in hydrogen, then cold-rolled to the final gage of 0.012 in. The loss of nitrogen in going from the ingot to cold-rolled strip was no more than 10 pct. The final heat treatment, which was for the purpose of develop-
