PYRRHOTITE has long been considered a gangue mineral to be eliminated as tailing in the treatment of various sulphide ores. However, in recent years the world-wide lack of sulphur resources has called attention to this mineral as a potential source of both sulphur and iron. Its importance as an economic mineral, however, has not been particularly emphasized. For this reason very little is known about its response to flotation, except that it can be depressed easily in alkaline circuit, by long aeration,1,2 addition of oxidizing agents3 or by starch.4 The object of this work was to study the floatability of pyrrhotite. This includes the effect of oxidation by aeration, of copper activation, and of change in pH.

In order to secure good results in the prevention of accidents, it is generally recognized that the desire for such accomplishment, as well as the aggressive and constructive action to achieve it, must emanate from the Top Management and permeate successively down through the "Chart of Authority" to the workmen. Several years ago, with the above as a basis and with full support of the Top Management, the Mining Department started a program of selling the foremen and bosses the idea that safety could be achieved and that it was desired and required. Using psychology, persistence and numerous other methods, the foremen and bosses were finally impressed with the idea that "It can be done" and "It will be done." With this in mind, new ideas were brought forth by the foremen and bosses regarding the caving operation and the specific jobs in the operation. These new ideas were taken up in round-table discussions and resulted in certain changes in the undercutting method and the actual drawing of the blocks. These changes resulted in increasing fragmentation of the blocks which prevented the usual hang-up areas in the blocks. With the rock smaller in size and within reasonable reach from the tapping drifts, accidents were prevented in the tapping section. At the same time, an enforced campaign of housekeeping throughout the mine was undertaken with very beneficial results. The foremen and bosses then, in turn, educated and trained the workers themselves to become safely conscious. In so doing, a constant re- minder was given on all jobs assigned that the job was to be done safely as well as efficiently. No man is assigned a job who is not qualified for the type of work required. Efficiency and safety go hand in hand.

AfteR investigating the work of coal-dust fired reverberatories of the Canadian Copper Co., at Copper Cliff, Ontario, the management of the Washoe Reduction Works decided to experiment with and ascertain the advantages of using coal dust as a fuel in their reverberatories. Consequently, during the month of June, 1914, reverberatory furnace No. 8 was changed in order to use powdered coal as a fuel. The results obtained by this method of firing are gratifying and show a decided saving in cost of smelting as compared to grate firing with lump coal. The furnace, as remodeled, is 124 ft. long by 21 ft. wide, and varies in height from 8 ft. 6 in. at the back end to 5 ft. 7 in. at the skimming end. The general construction of the furnace is similar to that of the other furnaces at this plant. There are no side doors to this furnace, as it was thought that with the present arrangement for feeding no "fettling" or "claying" would be required. The interior of the furnace can be inspected through the burner port holes, after shutting off the burners and giving a few seconds' time for the gases inside the furnace to clear away. The charging is done on either side of the furnace from longitudinal hoppers, extending a distance of 74 ft. from the back end of the furnace. Leading from the hoppers into the furnace are 6-in. pipes, spaced 191/4 in. apart, through which the charge is intermittently dropped. The charge is kept well above the slag line at all times; in this way the side walls are protected and no fettling is needed on this portion of the furnace. The remainder of the furnace requires fettling. After operating for three months, we found that the bricks were eaten into along each side wall from the skimming door back to the point where the charge had been dropped. The depth of this cutting away was 8 in. close to the front end and gradually tapered to zero at a distance of 50 ft., and was greatest on the side of the furnace having the larger flue connection. Hoppers will be put in for the entire length of furnace, from which fettling material will be dropped, to prevent this cutting. After the run of three months, the roof was in excellent condition. At the back of the furnace the bricks were not cut into at all; at 30 ft.

THE ADVERSE CONDITIONS that have gripped industry during recent years have to some extent submerged technical developments under the more pressing demands of economic problems. Progressive operators, nevertheless, have given attention to improvements in processes and equipment even when sales were at a low ebb. The array of facts relating to technical advancement here presented, although doubtless incomplete, is sufficient to indicate that the spirit of inquiry and research has not been quenched by adversity. During the latter part of 1933 a new element has focused interest more fully on improved methods of quarrying, mining, and preparation of nonmetallic minerals. Codes established under the NRA have fixed minimum wages, reduced working hours, and tended to establish selling prices .on a basis of reasonable profit. Labor adjustments will in many instances increase the cost of production, and stabilization of selling prices will tend to emphasize quality and service rather than price as sales arguments. These new conditions point to a growing necessity for improving technique in the interest of reducing cost of production and improving the quality of products. Thus, technology is linked with economics more firmly than ever.

A jet slurry apparatus has been constructed to test corrosive/erosive wear properties of grinding ball metal. Plain high carbon steel heat treated to a hardness of about 60 Rc was used. Slurries of quartz and chalcopyrite ore concentrate were used as the jetting media. Weight loss due to pure corrosion was determined by the linear polarization technique. Weight loss due to pure erosion was determined by jetting while cathodically protecting the sample. By comparing the total weight loss with the sum of the weight losses from pure corrosion and pure erosion, it was found that there was a synergistic effect between corrosion and erosive wear. Corrosion rate, erosion rate, and total erosion/corrosion rate are given as a function of pH and mineral type.

IN concentration of certain ores by soap flotation, prevention of quartz flotation is desired; the contrary is true in treatment of some oxide iron ores. Experimental study of the flotation of quartz goes back at least a quarter of a century.' Clean quartz does not float with fatty acids or soaps but does float when activated by one of many metallic salts. Control of pH is important. Broadly speaking the problem of quartz flotation has been approached from the empirical side, as was the related topic of flocculation or dispersion of quartz suspensions.' Empirical studies indicated the existence of critical relationships between the additions of collector and activator. These additions were not stoichiometric for the formation of soaps of the activator cation.

Porphyry copper deposits in the southwestern Pacific region differ in some points of geologic features from those of the United States. The deposits distribute along old or active island arcs and are generally younger in age (1-16 m.y. B.P.). In Japan, however, no typical porphyry copper deposits are yet reported, though the geological situation of Japanese islands is similar to that of the southwestern Pacific. Fluid inclusions in some porphyry copper deposits In the southwestern Pacific region and those in igneous rocks genetically related to the ore deposits In Japan have been studied, and the genesis of ore-forming fluids from igneous rocks are discussed. From the results, the possibility of finding porphyry copper-type mineralization in Japan are considered.

Hallimond tube flotation, contact angle measurements, electrokinetics, and electrode potential measurements have been used to investigate the natural floatability of molybdenite. The effect of surface pretreatment and the role of hydrogen, hydroxyl, molybdate, and calcium ions on the flotation of molybdenite has been studied. The surface potential of molybdenite has been suggested to be controlled by HMoO[ ] and MoO4= surface species whose properties are strongly influenced by pH. Calcium ions, which appear to be specifically adsorbed, are able to reverse the zeta potential of molybdenite. The experimental results have been analyzed in terms of the Derjaguin model of wettability, namely in terms of van der Waals and electrical double layer interactions and hydration effects at interfaces.

The kinetics of the cyclic oxidation and reduction processes for palladium powder were examined in the temperature range 848 to 923 K. The changes in oxidation behavior due to cycling are shown to result from the decrease in surface area. Sintering is found to occur only during the reduction process. Oxidation kinetics were found to follow a cubic law with time and yield a relation for the oxidation rate constant of k x = (1.05) 106 exp P74.0). 103 / RT] The kinetics of reduction are demonstrated to be first-order with the rate constant described by the expression: kr = (7.69) 1012 exp [-(208.0) 103 / RT] . In both expressions R is in J.mo1-1.K-1.

The intimate association of iron formation and massive sulfide deposits has been documented by many investigators (McAllister, 1960; Hutchinson, 1972). In a classic example of such an association, four distinct facies (oxide, carbonate, silicate and sulfide) were identified in an Algoma-type iron formation occurring in Paleozoic rocks, but exhibiting physical features (banding) and chemical composition (SiO2 + A1203 + Fe2O3) typical of Precambrian iron formations. The geochemical variation of the iron formation was studied by analyzing 62 samples for Si, Al, Fe, P, S, and Cop. Following a model proposed by James (1954), the geochemical and mineralogical variation of the iron formation can be used as an excellent tool for the exploration of massive sulfide deposits.

Longhole underground drilling has been carried on in the Tri-State area at various times over the past 35 years or more. W. F. Netzeband reported on this topic in 1926 and in 1930. More recently it has been found that in certain areas of the Picher field, Oklahoma, and under certain conditions, the jackleg or jumbo-mounted drifters can be used more economically and to greater advantage than surface churn drillholes for prospecting. To understand better the problems involved in Eagle-Picher's longhole prospecting program it would be helpful to cover the geologic criteria affecting it. Much has been written about the geology of the Picher field. A more complete description than that given here can be found in a recent paper by J. P. Lyden.

Technical and financial feasibility studies conducted at the Middle East Technical University, in Ankara, Turkey, have revealed that a 400 km long prospective slurry pipeline between Hasançelebi and Iskenderun could efficiently and economically transport iron concentrates, with a size of 55%-325 mesh and of amounts varying between 0.25 and 8.0 million tonslyear. Particularly for annual throughputs above 500,000 tons, favorable results have been obtained regarding the processing of the ore, the applicability, the transport cost, and the foreign ex- change currency savings.

A previous article reported a combination process for recovering both metallic iron and metallic manganese from the manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna Range in Minnesota.' In this process, the iron was recovered by direct reduction and magnetic separation and the manganese was recovered from the nonmagnetic tailing by leaching and electrolysis. The current efficiency during the electrolysis of manganese is quite low, in the range of 60 to 70%, due to the simultaneous plating of hydrogen.2,3 The parameters that affect the current efficiency are (1) the concentrations of the manganese ion and the ammonium sulfate buffer, (2) the effect of autoxidant, (3) temperature, (4) pH, and (5) current density. THE past year, the first full one of peacetime production, proved that the process of beating swords into plowshares has increased in complexity in step with civilization. Further, judging by various remarks of our distaff departments, the crystal balls of certain radio and magazine oracles must have been cloudy, because we have been in formed from time to time that coveted items such as automobiles and refrigerators did not appear in great abundance. This seemingly extraneous matter is really not out of place here, however; the steel producer and the fabricator exist in a sort of symbiosis: the making of consumer goods produces scrap which is returned to the steelmaker who makes more steel, and so on and so forth. Thus, no abundance of automobiles, no abundance of scrap from this normal source; and other sources had been picked pretty clean during the war. To be short, so was scrap. Since the economy of the steel industry lean; as heavily upon iron from scrap as upon iron from ore, the statement on transformation of swords to plowshares follows. But this is not the whole story: after all, ingot production was a record for a peace year!

Materials and Fuels, heard 37 witnesses ponder the value of minerals vs esthetics or other uses of federal lands. On August 17, four Army Hueys swept the senatorial party, the press, Forest Service Officers and such distinguished witnesses as Montana Governor Forrest H. Anderson over the Custer-Gallatin National Forests, besting the thin air of 10,000 ft p1us, they set down on Iron Plateau.

A laminar flow of a mixture of ore, a carbonaceous reductant, and chlorine gas or other chlorinating agent is passed through a reaction zone maintained at a temperature of 1350 to 1950°C and a product stream Including titanium tetrachloride is withdrawn from the zone. The atomic ratio of carbon to oxygen in the feed mixture is greater than 1:1, and the molar ratio of chlorine to titanium solids In the product stream is between about 0 5.1 and 2:l. FOR the use of workmen and employees, the company should establish a dispensary and a -hospital where workmen who suffer accidents or professional diseases may be taken care of; and at suitable places in the mine or metallurgical plant it should install first-aid stations. Workmen have a right to receive 75 per cent of their wages while they are unable to perform their work as result of a professional disease; but some companies pay full wages and in the case of natural disease, with the exception of venereal, alcoholism, injuries from fights, and chronic illnesses, 50 per cent of their wages up to a period of two months. The number of diseases the Law considers as professional is large and increases almost daily. Among the professional diseases, the one which has caused greatest harm to the miners and expense to the companies is silicosis. To avoid its propagation, companies should take every possible precaution that the working atmosphere is free from dust, abating this by frequent sprinkling of the workings using, wet drills and furnishing the workmen adequate protective apparatus such as respirators.
