THE importance of contact angles in flotation has long been recognized, but little has been done to get quantitative relationships between the surface coverage of the mineral by the reagent, the length of the hydrocarbon chain, and the contact angle. It is well known that for a complete monolayer on the surface of a mineral the contact angle 8 is determined only by the reagent1 and principally by the chain length of the hydrocarbon radical. Although for flotation the monolayer usually is regarded as being complete, early experiments of Wark and Cox&apos; showed that at very small concentrations of potassium ethyl xanthate the contact angle on galena changed in a continuous way from 0&apos; to the equilibrium value of 60". Further, Gaudin and Vincenta showed a similar continuity using heptylic acid and sphalerite. This shows that with probably incomplete monolayers, 0 varies with the degree of surface coverage. At the time these experiments were made it was impossible to measure the actual amount of surface coverage, especially since the decrease of the collector concentration in the liquor could be influenced by chemical side reactions. Through the use of the radioactive tracer method for the measurement of the amount of collector adsorbed on the surface of the mineral, Gaudin and Bloecher&apos; were able to determine accurately the actual surface coverage of dodecylamine acetate on quartz, but they did not measure any contact angles. It is believed that the relationship between the surface coverage and the contact angle is extremely important in flotation, especially as Gaudin and Bloecher showed that a 95 pct recovery is possible with a coverage of only 5 pct. Theoretical Considerations The work of adhesion W is the energy bound (in ergs per sq cm) when an interface is formed. It is determined by the difference of the free surface energies (surface tensions) of the respective phases 7j and yZ before contact and the interfacial free surface energy y, after contact. The definition of the contact angle permits the elimination of the unknown surface energy of the solid and hence the calculation of W from the surface tension of the liquid y and the contact angle 8: W = y (1 + COS0) [1] Consider a surface consisting of two components, identified as 2 and 3, 1 being the liquid. The amount of 2 in the composite surface is x, where 0 < x < 1. The respective contact angles with 1 and air are 8, and 8.. The total work of adhesion of such a surface is the sum of the values of the components multiplied by their respective areas. A formal relation can be written: Wm = x-W2+ (l-x)-W, [2] in which W, is the work of adhesion of the composite surface. Eq 1 can be introduced into Wt and Wa, but in the case of W, some discussion is needed. If the two components are segregated, each component forming an integral part of the composite surface there is no physical meaning for a contact angle 8m calculated from W,, by using eq 1. If, on the other hand, the area of each patch of the components is small in comparison with, say, the diameter of the bubble used in measuring, it could be expected that 0m would have a physical significance, because of the action of the surface tension of the liquid-gas interface tending to smooth out sharp corners. TWO overfeed drum-type separators using a suspension of magnetite in water as the separating medium have been installed in the Champion No. 1 preparation plant of the Pittsburgh Coal Co., Division of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Company. A simplified flow diagram of the Champion No. 1 coarse coal circuit is shown in Fig. 1. A railroad car rotary dump, capable of handling 20 cars per hr, discharges the coal into a hopper. Coal is fed from the hopper of the rotary dump to a 60-in. belt conveyor by two reciprocating pan-type feeders. The belt conveyor feeds the run of mine coal onto the main raw coal screen. The first deck is fitted with 3 in. round hole perforated plate which removes the 3x0-in. coal. The second deck of the screen is equipped with 6-in. lip screens which separate the remaining coal into +6 in. and 6x3 in. The +6 in. coal is transferred to a shaking picking table and then discharged onto the loading boom. The 6x3-in. coal is fed to the No. 2 dense medium vessel for cleaning. The clean coal from this unit flows to a vibrating screen where the medium is removed and the coal sized into 6x4 in. and 4x3 in. The 6x4-in. coal is transferred to the loading booms and the 4x3-in. is conveyed to the clean coal classifying screens to remove degradation. The 3x0-in. raw coal is blended in a system composed of three storage bins having a total capacity of 400 tons. From these bins the coal is fed onto a 48-in. flight conveyor by three reciprocating feeders. This flight conveyor delivers the coal to the Rheo plant. The 3x0-in. coal is then cleaned in two 48-in. Rheolaveur launders each equipped with two Rheo boxes. The first set of boxes removes a primary refuse and the second set produces a middling product which is recirculated in the launders. The cleaned coal and water overflows from the primary launders to two sizing and dewatering shaker screens where the water and - 3/8-in. coal are removed for further cleaning in the Rheo fine coal plant. The 3x3/8-in. clean coal is combined with the 4x3-in. coal from the No. 2 vessel, sized into 4x2 in., 2x1 1/4 in., and 11/4x3/8 in., then sent to the loading booms. The 3x0-in. refuse from the primary launders is normally fed to the No. 1 dense medium circuit, but any portion or all of this material can, as an alternate, be processed in the Rheo rewash launder. The primary refuse when fed to the dense medium circuit is screened into 3/8x0 which is cleaned in the fine coal plant and 3x3/8 for cleaning in the No. 1 vessel. The clean coal from this vessel is passed over a vibrating drainage and rinse screen, then sluiced to the rewash sizing shaker where it is dewatered and sized for loading. The theoretical basis is presented for energy dissipation methods of measuring permeability in saturated heterogeneous media. Analysis starts with the equation for single-phase flow in heterogeneous porous media which is a first-order partial differential equation in the unknown permeability. This equation is reduced to a system of characteristic equations useful in deriving a differential expression for the permeability as a function of the known potential distribution. For steady flow systems the expression is integrable, giving the permeability integral for direct calculation of the distribution along successive streamlines. The boundary condition in permeability is presented and includes a discussion of the special requirement to assure uniqueness. Theoretical results and necessary computations are incorporated into two general computer programs capable of determining the permeability distribution in two- and three-dimensional steady flow systems. Results are then presented for an energy dissipation analysis using the methods and soltware to determine a field permeability thickness distribution. INTRODUCTION Theoretical work leading to the description of fluid flow in heterogeneous porous media has developed slowly and somewhat sporadically, although the areas of engineering applications predominantly involve flow in nonhomogeneous media. The lack of accurate and economical methods for measuring field permeability distributions has been a major limitation to realistic description of natural flow systems. The economical measurement of permeability using energy dissipation methods may overcome this limitation. Among other things, any permeability measurement method involves consideration of energy dissipation; as used here, "energy dissipation method" denotes the following general approach. The areal energy distribution is measured on an existing flow system in porous media. Then through appropriate analysis of the dissipation of energy in the flow system, the permeability distribution is determined throughout the region using the minimum boundary conditions required to assure a mathematically unique result. This paper presents the theoretical basis for such a method, as well as the techniques and computer software needed to carry out the analysis. The method and techniques are then used in a preliminary field application. EQUATIONS DESCRIBING FLOW IN HETEROGENEOUS MEDLA Heterogeneous as used here implies differing in kind, having unlike quantities or possessing different characteristics. Accordingly, a heterogeneous porous medium has unlike quantities or differing characteristics at different locations. More precisely, if a porous medium is heterogeneous with respect to some property, then that property is functionally dependent on the spatial location. (Media properties are considered here as macroscopic.) Specifically considering permeability k,** then k = G(x, y, z) ,............(1) or the permeability is a scalar function G of the location (x, y, z). Spatial variation of several other properties, of which porosity, dispersivity and medium compressibility are but a few, is implied by the broad title of heterogeneous porous media. The pressure drop in a well per unit rate of flow is conrolled by the resistance of the formation, the viscosity of the fluid. and the additional resistance concentrated around the well bore resulting from the drilling and completion technique employed and, perhaps, from the production practices used. The pressure drop caused by this additional resistance is defined in this paper as the skin effect. denoted by the symbol S. This skin effect considerably detracts from a well&apos;s capacity to produce. Methods are given to determine quantitatively (a) the value of S, (b) the final build-up pressure, and (c) the product of average permeability times the thickness of the producing formation. INTRODUCTION Equations which relate the pressure in a well producing from a homogeneous formation with pressures existing at various distances around the well are generally used within the industry. The relation ii quite simple when the fluid flowing is assumed to be incompressible. It becomes somewhat more complicated when the flowing fluid is considered compressible so that the duration of the flow can he considered. In each case the major portion of the pressure drop occurs close to the well bore. However analyses of pressure build-up curves indicate that the pressure drop in the vicinity of the well bore is greater than that computed from these equations using the known, physical characteristics of the formation and the fluids. In order to explain there excessive drops it is necessary to assume that permeability of the formation at and near the well bore is substantially reduced as a result of drilling. completion and, perhaps. production practice. This possibility has been recognized in the literature. A method to compute the pressure drop due to a reduction of the permeability of the formation near the well bore. which is designated as the skin effect. S, is given in the following paragraphs. To start, equations normally used to describe flow in the vicinity of a well are given without considering this effect. These equations then are modified to include the effect of a skin on the pressure behavior. Finally a method is given to estimate the effect of the skin on the pressure and production behavior of a well. PRESSURE EQUATIONS Incompressible Fluid Flow If p is defined as the flowing pressure in a well of radius the pressure at distance r from the well has been shown to be:" The total pressure drop between the drainage boundary, and the well bore is given by These equations are valid only if the flow towards the well occurs in a horizontal homogeneous medium and the fluids are incompressible. The assumptions imply that all fluid taken from the well enters the system at r a condition rarely encountered in practice. Compressible Fluid Flow, Steady State A more realistic equation is obtained if it is assumed that the compressibility, c, of the flowing fluids is small and has a constant value over the pressure range encountered. After the well has been producing for some time so that its rate has become constant and steady state is reached, the pressures throughout the drainage area are falling by the same amount per unit of time, and the pressure differences between a point in the drainage area and the well are constant. When these conditions are met. the rate of production, q, from a well is equal to where dp/dt is the pressure drop per unit time. The Enquirer of October 13, 1835 carried a letter signed "G," calling attention to the great number of Virginians who were leaving the state and to the lack of enterprise shown in not developing the ample natural resources available. He mentioned coal in particular and in closing said: "Besides the coal mines owned by individuals, the Black Heath company of colliers are carrying on extensive operations. Owing to the derangement of the currency, and the immense expenses incurred in boring and sinking new shafts, I understand that their dividends have not yet been so large, as they may be confidently expected in future.-Another company, under the title of the Midlothian Coal Mining Company, is now about being organized by the Messrs. Wooldridges of Chesterfield, for the purpose of establishing an extensive coal business. Having examined the lands embraced in the charter and the principles upon which the company is designed to be organized, I am persuaded that more productive stock can no where be found. The charter embraces a space nearly equal to a mile square, adjoining the mines of the Black Heath company, those of Mr. N. Mills, and those of Stone Henge, which space must contain coal of great thickness of excellent quality, as the strata of coal of those other mines pass through it; exhibiting a field so extensive, that centuries may elapse before it is exhausted. A shaft has been sunk on these lands, from which a very large quantity of the best coal is being raised. The terms of the charter require the Proprietors to sell one-half of these lands and mines, from the sale of which they will appropriate $100,000 as permanent capital, to purchase hands and engines, and to sink other shafts to work the property and thus going into operation with such decided advantages, as to produce a profit as great as a reasonable man should desire. Here is an opportunity for investing capital, which I think should satisfy the wishes of many Virginians who speak of emigrating. Will they not embrace it?-I have confined my remarks to the coal mines, because they are in the heart of our State, and their operations are familiar to many who can verify the statements. I might extend them to the other mineral treasures of our State; but if I do so, they must be reserved for another number, this being longer than I intended, and perhaps longer than you can conveniently find room for in your crowded columns. High angle conveyor (HA C) systems in open-¬pit mining offer many advantages over the traditional, truck only, haulage systems. These include superior energy efficiency, less dependency on petroleum products, less sensitivity to inflation, less excavation for the amount of ore recovered, and less ramp construction and maintenance costs. Various high angle conveying systems and the corresponding characteristics of the high angle conveyor are illustrated. Discussion includes the range of HAC systems from the low capacity (up to 1.8 kt/h or 2000 stph), low lift (10.7 to 36.6 m or 35 to 120 ft), continuously mobile to the moderate capacity (1.8 to 3.6 kt/h or 2000 to 4000 stph), moderate lift (36.6 to 76.2 m or 120 to 250 ft), intermittently mobile to the high capacity (greater than 3.6 kt/h or 4000 stph), high lift (greater than 76.2 m or 250 ft), semimobile. Combinations of the above as required for the various open-pit mining operations are also discussed.

The Crandon deposit, located in northern Wisconsin, is a 65.8 million ton Precambrian volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit which averages 1.4% copper and 5.8% zinc. The deposit is classic in origin, mineralogy and shape. Comprehensive understanding of the geology of both the deposit and the project site has been fundamental to the credibility and success of project feasibility studies and regulatory permit preparation. Mine development in the current investment and regulatory climate requires thorough and timely application of geologic tools. From 1977-1980 geologic activities were focused on the typical objectives of orebody delineation, reserve estimation, depositional geology, and general site investigation. Results from these programs formed the basis for the project&apos;s preliminary feasibility studies. Since 1981 further geologic investigations have provided criteria for project design, site management, and operational permitting. Activities have included mine entry position definition drilling, developing geostatistical reserve modeling, large diameter (150 mm) core drilling for mill pilot samples, rock mechanics testing, and evaluation of the glacial overburden/deposit geohydrology for computer simulation.

MANY members of the Institute, who participated in the visit made, during the Bethlehem meeting of February, 1906, to the shops of the Ingersoll-Rand Company, at Phillipsburg, N. J., inspected with interest the new Electric-Air drill, which the company had set up for the purpose of showing it in actual operation to American. mining engineers. At the request of the Secretary of the Institute, I promised at that time to prepare a paper for our Transactions, describing the construction and advantages of the machine. But such a paper would then necessarily have contained much that was only expected or claimed by the designers and manufacturers of the drill, and not yet incontrovertibly proved by varied and long-continued practice. However moderate such statements might have been, they would have given inevitably to the paper, to some extent at least, the air of a prospectus, rather than of a technical contribution. I therefore decided, with the Secretary&apos;s approval, to postpone the writing of the promised paper until it could set forth the results of adequate actual practice, as well as the latest details of construction, etc., based upon practical experience. That period has now arrived. The Electric-Air drill has been exhaustively tested in the field, under varied and arduous conditions and upon the hardest rocks. It is now fairly in the field; its merits and performances are matters of unimpeachable record, and its place among established competitors can be definitely determined. Knowledge of the diffusivity of carbon in the low temperature form of iron (alpha iron existing below 910°C) is at the moment of considerable interest in the study of the decomposition of austenite and martensite, the elastic after-effect,123 the magnetic after-effect4 and the decarburization of steel below 910°C. Information on the solubility of carbon in iron, and to a lesser extent its diffusion, is also important in consideration of such phenomena as blue-brittleness, temper-brittleness, "magnetic" aging, quench-aging, strain-aging, and possibly the yield point. In order to obtain more information on these subjects more fundamental knowledge is necessary. It is the purpose of this work to present data on the diffusion and solubility of carbon in the alpha iron. The high temperature form of iron (gamma; face-centered cubic) existing above 910°C is capable of dissolving relatively large amounts of carbon, up to 1.7 pet at 1130°C, while the low temperature form (alpha, body-centered cubic) existing below 910° dissolves only a limited maximum amount of less than 0.02 pet carbon at 725°C, according to data obtained here. Since the solubility of carbon in the face-centered or gamma iron is large, relatively speaking, no great analytical difficulties have been encountered in the determination of the solubility lines5 or of the diffusion of carbon.0 The limited solubility of carbon in alpha iron offers difficulties because experimental procedures and analytical methods for low carbon contents below say 0.01 pet have to be more refined than techniques used for work with gamma iron. Because of the difficulties of applying conventional methods to the determination of the diffusion of carbon in alpha iron, virtually no work has been done on this subject. However, by proper refinement of the analytical method for small amounts of carbon, the determination of the diffusion coefficient can be made readily using modified procedures. The solubility of carbon in alpha iron has been determined over a temperature range by various investigators, but the agreement among them is poor. The present investigation establishes the limits quite accurately. Information of this kind is useful in establishing the correctness of equilibrium diagrams but, more significantly, such information on maximum solubilities, especially when extended to alloyed ferrites, should be extremely important in the study of aging and related phenomena. Literature The literature existing on the diffusion, in particular, and on the solubility of carbon in alpha iron is not extensive. The data which exist are not of a high order of accuracy, much of them being in the realm of conjecture. THE DIFFUSION OF CARBON IN ALPHA IRON Whiteley7 made the qualitative ob- servation, using metallographic techniques, that the rate of diffusion of carbon at the A1 (725°C) point was very rapid and that its diffusion was still rapid at 550°C. Snoek,4 studying the magnetic aftereffect in high purity iron, arrived at the conclusion that the after-effect could be explained by the presence of small amounts of carbon diffusing under the influence of magnetostrictive strain (lattice distortion due to magnetic interaction). In later work, Snoek8 made an estimate of the ratio of carbon diffusion in alpha to its diffusion in gamma iron, and concluded that for a temperature of 910°C the ratio of Da/D? was 2600. Polder,9 basing his calculations of D on relaxation phenomena in the elastic after-effect, estimated that Da is about 1/3 of D? at 910°C (1183°K) and is about 1/12 of Dy at 727°C (1000°K). Polder&apos;s equation for the diffusion of carbon in alpha iron was calculated to be 18000 D = 5.2 X 10-4 e-RT cm2 per sec Ham10 obtained data for the diffusion and solid solubility of carbon in alpha iron at two temperatures by using one technique similar to that employed in this study. He found a D of 8.0 X 10-7 cm2 per sec at 702°C and of 2.7 X 10-7 at 648°C. THE SOLUBILITY OF CARBON IN ALPHA IRON Although pearlite is absent in steels containing 0.06 pet,11 0.05 pet,12 or 0.045 pet C,13 it appears that the carbon in these steels cannot be in solution in ferrite. The solubility of carbon at the A1 (725°C) point was first determined by Scott14 on the basis of cooling curves, and was found to be between 0.03 and 0.04 pet C. The region of metallic ore deposits in northern Chile, southern Peru, western Bolivia, and northwestern Argentina occurs in arid zones at altitudes as high as 6 km (19,700 ft). Because surface water supplies are meager, new mines require unexploited sources of water. Prolific ground water aquifers occur in salar basins in this region of the Andean Highlands. Exploration water wells have been constructed and aquifer characteristics have been tested in eight salar basins. Results indicate ground water quality is good. Aquifer transmissivity and storage computed from results of pumping tests indicate maximum capacities of more than 170 L/sec (2700 gpm) for individual production water wells. Results of investigations conducted by the authors demonstrate that ground water reservoirs in the Andean Highlands comprise a source of large quantities of water for the mineral industry.

FOREWORD-In an interview published in the May 1975 issue of MINING ENGINEERING, one of the world&apos;s most respected scientists, nuclear physicist Hans Bethe discussed the reliability of nuclear power plants and their unmatched safety record. The Nobel laureate also refuted the anti-nuclear lobby&apos;s claims that nuclear plants emit harmful radioactive effluents. When asked whether the US has sufficient uranium resources, Dr. Bethe replied that "it depends on the time of introduction of the commercial and advanced breeder reactors which, in effect, can generate more nuclear fuel than they consume." The United States has enough U3O8 to last until the breeders can take over in 1995, said Dr. Bethe. But lie warned that extensive environmental damage would be caused if "environmentalists" succeed in delaying the development of the breeder. Any such delays, he noted, would vastly increase the demand for U3O8 in conventional reactors; this, in turn, would impose an immense burden on the US uranium mining industry, which would then have no alternative but to mine the low-grade Chattanooga deposits.

The writer has dealt with the effect of various methods of melting copper upon the gas content of the metal.&apos; The copper referred to in his earlier paper was melted in the foundry both in the oil furnace and the electric furnace. As the metal did not measure up to conductivity standard, the term "casting copper" was applied to the material in the title of the paper. It was thought that some information in regard to the gases in a sample of overpoled copper might also be of interest, and through the courtesy of C. R. Stevens, superintendent of the copper mill of the West-inghouse Elec. & Mfg. Co., such a sample was obtained. The metal was chill-cast in the form of an ingot about 7 in. long, 2 1/2 in. deep (from the base to the raised surface of the ingot) and from 1 3/8 to 1 7/8 in. wide. A photograph of part of the ingot is shown in Fig. 1. The effect of over-poling on the surface of the metal is here quite clearly shown.

NO metallurgical process developed in the last half century has been more widely advertised to both technologists and lay- men, or has done more to promote efficiency and economy in the extraction of the valuable portions of ores than has the flotation process. Practically everybody has heard of this strange procedure whereby the heavy portions of an ore are made to float while the light parts sink. Some- times it is called froth flotation, the mineral-bearing froth being from the first a distinguishing characteristic. Many times it is called oil flotation, because a thin film of oil was commonly applied to the particles to be floated to make them adhere to the bubbles that rise through the pulp to form the surface froth. Oil, though commonly used, is not, however, necessary for this purpose, which is one of the facts that has been learned as the process has been developed.
