One of the primary requirements for successful operation of an enriched gas-drive project is to control the composition of injection gas. This can become a serious and difficult problem, particularly in cases where the enrichment material is being furnished from a number of field -produced gas streams. It is possible to effect control of the injection gas composition through frequent or continuous sampling; however, this can be extremely costly and, in many cases, impractical due to laboratory requirements of time. Another alternative would be to provide a calculation technique which would be flexible and sufficiently accurate to predict composition of the liquid and gas streams of interest at any point in the system. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a technique that was used successfully on an operating enriched gas-drive project for developing information which could be used for controlling composition of the injected gas. FIELD OPERATIONS The particular field (hereafter called Example field) in the example operation being discussed is composed of four oil reservoirs (A. B, C and E) and one gas condensate reservoir (D). Casinghead gas from the oil reservoirs and gas from the gas condensate reservoir are gathered through a field gathering system as shown in Fig. I for injection into Reservoir C. The gas mixture which is recovered from the five reservoirs for injection purposes is composed of gases liberated in 19 individual separators, each operating at a separate temperature and pressure. PROPOSED CALCULATION TECHNIQUE It is well known that vapor-liquid equilibrium calculations in general use throughout the petroleum industry can be used to predict reliably the phase behavior of hydrocarbon mixtures, particularly at pressures less than 1,000 psig. It is then a simple matter to account for the material on a ComPonent basis by m''ing flash and material balance calculations at each separation point in a hydrocarbon system. Accordingly, it was proposed to use vapor-liquid equilibrium and material balance cal- culations with a medium-sized electronic digital computer as a basis for developing a control procedure for use in controlling injection gas composition in the enriched gas-drive project. Although the approach is a simple one, the numerous vapor-liquid equilibrium calculations involved make the problem laborious; in this particular case, it would have been impractical to make sutficiently complete analysis without the aid of digital computing equipment. The standard free energies of formation of the lowest stable sulfides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten in equilibrium with the corresponding metal hazle been determined by reacting the sulfide and metal with H2(g)/H2S(g) mixtures. First, the equilibrium gas ratios (Ph2S/PH2) are very small, and with the most stable sulfides in the series the ratios tend to be at the limit of the range for precise chemical analysis (10-4); and second, the reaction rate for the formation or reduction of these sulfides appears to be relatively slow. A primary reason for the latter problem is that the gas phase near the equilibrium concentration has very little capacity for transport of sulfur. It is to be noted that the thermo-dynamic properties obtained from the experimental results by Eq. [I] apply for 1 g-atom of sulfur in the metal-saturated compound even though the exact composition of the compound has not been determined. The work reported here is a study of the standard free energies of formation of the lowest sulfides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, and of copper, by Reaction [I]. In planning the experimental program, it was decided that the technique that has been used previously3"' could be used with modification and that an improved analytical method was needed for determining H2S in the gas phase. The rates of nucleation and growth at various temperatures in U-0.45, 1.1, and 1.35 at. pet Cr alloys were determined, providing a qliantitative proo-f that the transformation under study is controlled by nucleation and diffusional growth. The linear relationship, log NV US 1/T2, suggests that the nucleation of the alloys is probably controlled by the classical law of nuclei formation. The established linear relationship, log G us 1/T, in the three alloys suggests that growth in each alloy is controlled by bidimensional nuclei formation. It was established that both the rate of growth and the rale of nucleation are retarded by chromium. Using classical formulae, sApN and sApG (the ß/a apparent interphase energies) were calculated from the nucleation and growth results, respectively. It was found that their values are of the same order of magnitude. However, why sApN is unaffected by the addition of chromium, while sApG increases with it, needs further clarification. In the last few years, an appreciable amount of research has been conducted into the mechanism of the ß —a transformation in uranium and uranium alloys. Recently, Burke1 reviewed the published work concerned with this transformation. He concluded that in dilute uranium alloys it is firmly established that, at high temperatures in the a range, ß decomposes by a diffusional process. However, he based his conclusion either on experiments dealing with the over-all transformation,2 or on qualitative results.3 It was felt that a better insight into the mechanism of transformation could be gained from the quantitative measurements of growth and nucleation rates, which we aimed to carry out in the present work. In a previous work,4 we have shown that a rim of a grains is formed during isothermal transformation at the high a range. The thickening of this rim with time was used for measuring the rate of growth in U-0.45 at. pet Cr.5 This method was also used in the present work for two more alloys. (New York Meeting, February, 1912.) THE James diagonal-plane slimer is specially adapted to handle the finest slimes, but it will also handle sands as coarse as 40-mesh. The saving efficiency of this machine is due to the original construction of the deck, and to the rapid reciprocating movement imparted to it by the head-motion. The deck consists of a plurality of connected planes, having a certain fixed ratio of inclination one to another. These planes intersect each other diagonally to the stroke-line of the table and are arranged so as to give the pulp on the table a double treatment. This double concentration performed by the diagonal-plane deck produces cleaner concentrates and tailings than those obtained by the operation of two separate machines. The action of the diagonal planes settles, combines, and holds all the concentrates in one compact mass, sharply defined from the gangue, and easily cut away without loss. Many slime-concentrating machines distribute the feed-pulp for a distance of 4 or 5 ft. only, and upon a very limited settling-surface. This results in a thick, heavy deposit, from which it is impossible to stratify the values and wash, away the gangue, the resulting products being dirty concentrates, and tailings carrying high values. The diagonal-plane slimer distributes the feed-pulp for a distance of 10 ft., and upon a settling-surface having an area of 40 sq. ft.; in other words, it spreads the pulp thinly on the table, which allows the metallic values to settle through the gangue quickly, forming a bottom stratum from which the thinly-distributed overlying stratum. of gangue is easily brushed away by the feed-water without disturbing the underlying concentrates. IN the process employed by Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. for the production of metallic nickel, a sul-fide concentrate is leached with ammonia and air under pressure. Following the removal of iron, copper, and other impurities, there remains a purified solution having the following analysis: 40 to 50 g per liter Ni, 200 to 400 g per liter (NH4)2 SO 4, and 20 to 30 g per liter NH3. Metallic nickel is reduced from this solution by hydrogen under pressure at 300' to 350°F in mechanically agitated autoclaves. A catalyst, ferrous sulfate, is required to initiate the first reduction. After the reduction, the depleted solution is discharged, leaving the metallic nickel in the autoclave. The nickel produced, being in a finely divided form, is used as a catalyst for the reduction of the next batch of solution. Upon repeated use the metallic nickel particles increase in size and become more compact, resulting in the production of a powder with higher apparent density. For this reason, each reduction is termed densification. Finally, when the burden of metal powder in the autoclave becomes too great to obtain effective agitation, both powder and depleted solution are discharged. The autoclave is then filled with fresh solution, ferrous sulfate catalyst added as before, and a new cycle started. The operation is described in earlier publications.1-6 A comprehensive historical review of the reduction of metals from solutions in general was given in a paper by Schaufelberger.7 The experimental data presented in this paper were taken from the work done in the Research Laboratory of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. in Ottawa during the development of the process in 1951 and 1952. The results of the work were tested on a pilot plant scale in Ottawa in the period 1952 to 1953. Following laboratory and the pilot plant studies a commercial process has operated successfully since 1954 in the Nickel Refinery of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. General Experimental Technique The experiments were carried out in a stainless steel, 1-gallon, agitated autoclave designed and manufactured by Autoclave Engineers Inc. The inside dimensions of the vessel were 5 in. diam and 12 in. depth. CUBA'S lateritic iron ores, occurring on the northern coast of that island, though known to the Spaniards. did not receive any general attention until the close of the Spanish-American War. Preliminary studies of these deposits at that time indicated that the limonite contained small percentages of nickel and chrome, and it ryas subsequently discovered that although the average nickel content was only approximately 0.6 per certain limited areas of ore were suffiniently high in nickel to be considered commercial provided a suitable process fur its recovery could be developed. Early in 1937, Pardners Mines Corp. began a series of investigations which led to the development of such a process. Coincidentally, this company acquired option' on certain properties in the Levisa Bay and Moa Bay regions and conducted a systematic campaign of exploration by test pits and hand-auger holes in the course of which an aggregate of 90.000.000 tons of ore was developed in eight deposits.

A FEW years ago, the Ventilation Committee established the practice of presenting one topic each year for discussion at the annual meeting. The practice has met good response on the part of committee members and I suggest that it be continued. The topic chosen for this year, "Underground Anemometry," is a topic which has bothered me for more than 20 years. It seems to me that the coal industry is content to rely on slipshod methods for measuring the rate of flow of air underground, so I prefaced my discussional charge to committee members with the statement that I regard air measurements made in the usual way, with hand held anemometer, as no good. Agreements and disagreements came in from more than a dozen engineers, some of whom are with operating companies, coal and metal; some with manufacturers; others with government agencies.

Palladium has a large capacity for the dissolution or occlusion of hydrogen; the gas also diffuses very rapidly through the metal. Palladium thimbles are widely used in the laboratory for purification of hydrogen by diffusion. The use of palladium filters could be extended to several large-scale applications if greater stability of the permeation process could be attained. In this paper a number of aspects contributing toward this goal are discussed, and new data on solubility and diffusivity are given. Palladium sheets of 0.005, 0.010, or 0.020 in. thickness were prepared by three procedures: casting and rolling, sintering palladium powder, and sintering palladium powder to which 0.1 pct thorium oxide had been added. Half-inch diam circular specimens were cut and clamped in a stainless steel holder provided with knife edges to seal the palladium sheet with soft copper gaskets. The seals were tested for leaks at l0-5 mm Hg. No difficulties from this source were encountered even after many temperature cycles in the system. The holder was silver-soldered to Kovar-glass seals and attached to the system through glass ball joints. Each joint was sealed with Apiezon wax and was adjacent to a cold trap. In several experiments the holders were fused directly into the system, eliminating the ball joints, to show that the wax did not affect the filter. Three filter holders were supported in holes in a stainless steel cylinder, which also acted as a temperature equalizing block inside the resistance wound furnace. The measuring thermocouple was inserted in one of the holders. A potentiometric controller with control thermocouple on the furnace heater winding maintained ± 0.2oC. Electrolytic hydrogen was purified and stored as shown in the flow diagram, Fig. 1. It could be admitted to either or both sides of the palladium specimens. Only a mechanical pump was used, for even high pumping speeds would not bring the pressure on the off-gas side of the filter below 10 to 50p Hg owing to the rapid hydrogen flow through the filters. A series of steady-state permeability studies allowed identification of several conditions of permeability loss. A constant fore pressure was maintained while the low-pressure face was pumped. After enough time had elapsed for a steady flow to be established the pump was cut off, and the rate of pressure increase in a thermostated bulb was measured to determine the flow rate. The time delay method of Daynes1,9 was adopted since it offered the possibility of determining solubilities and diffusivities. For each measurement both sides of the filter were evacuated for 15 min, which gave about 10-4mm Hg residual pressure. Hydrogen was admitted to one side or the other of the filter at a fixed pressure. The pressure on the off-gas side was observed as a function of time. A
