The Bureau of Mines measured the geochemical changes as H2SO4 was used for in situ uranium leaching by Rocky Mountain Energy Company near Casper, Wyoming. Cores and ground water were analyzed before leaching. Water samples were taken from observation wells located between injection and production wells as the leach solution was brought up to full strength in several steps. Measurements were made of pH, Eh, temperature, conductivity, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen,HC03, U. V, Na, K, Ca, Mg,S04, CI, Mo, Mn, Fe, AI, Si, F, P, As, and Se. The data were gathered to assist in geochemical modeling of leaching and to study the potential environmental effects of acid leaching. Environmental considerations appear favorable. For example, the concentration of Se, a toxic element often found in uranium deposits, stayed below the EPA standard for drinking water.

This paper presents information on the use of a new propping agent (malleable aluminum particles) which has been used successfully for producing high-conductivity fractures. The conductivity of a packed fracture depends on the width of the fracture as well as the permeability of the propping material. It is significant that the flow capacity of a propped crack is often increased many fold by propping the crack with a sparse distribution of particles. However, the flow capacity of a sparsely propped crack can be limited by two phenomena: (I) crushing of the propping particles, and (2) embedment of the propping particles in the formation walls. Malleable aluminum particles exhibit interesting properties which tend to overcome these limitations. As high loads are applied to the particles they will deform slightly, rather than shattering. The deformation results in a greater bearing area against the formation wall. This reduces the stress on the particle and reduces particle penetration into the formation. The behavior of aluminum particles under load and the bearing capacities of serveral formation rocks have been measured in the laboratory. By properly using these data, as explained in this paper, the flow capacities of aluminum-propped cracks can be calculated for a variety of conditions. Aluminum particles have been used successfully in the field to prop fractures. Where high-conductivity fractures were needed, the aluminum-propped fractures have given greater well stimulation than could have been expected for conventional fracturing processes. INTRODUCTION The purpose of a hydraulic fracture treatment is to create a conductive channel from the wellbore out into the oil or gas formation. The word conductive is emphasized because we believe that the fracture conductivity (flow capacity) is one of the most important factors influencing fracturing results. Previous papers have pointed out the additional well stimulation that can sometimes be achieved by increasing fracture conductivity. Several years ago, we investigated in some detail the effect of fracture conductivity on productivity increases to be expeced from vertical fractures. Both electrical analog and theoretical studies of unsteady-state flow behavior were made. A discussion of the electrical analog equipment and some of the results of the study were given in a previous paper' by Dyes, Kemp and Caudle. Further details were given recently by McGuire and Sikora.5 Fig. 1 shows the remarkable influence of relative fracture flow capacity and length on well stimulation. Briefly, the study indicates the following. 1. High-permeability formations require high-conductivity cracks for best results. 2. The longer the crack, the higher the fracture conductivity required for best results. 3. If the conductivity of the crack is very large compared to the formation (i.e., flow is not being limited by crack conductivity), then the longer the fracture, the better will be the results. Judging from recently published articles,1,314 there is current interest in methods for obtaining high fracture conductivities. Hence, we would like to present in this paper a discussion of a new fracture propping process (use of aluminum particle) which we have used successfully to obtain highly conductive fractures. There are several factors which influence the conductivity of a propped crack. Conventional fracturing techniques frequently result in a crack completely packed with fracturing sand. For such conditions, the crack conductivity is the product of the width of the packed fracture and the permeability of the propping material. In a study1 of the action of amyl xan-thate on chalcocite in water suspension, it was found that if the xanthate is added in relatively large quantity the xanthate group can be accounted for in three forms: (1) as xanthate ion remaining in water, (2) as benzene-soluble cuprous xanthate on the chalcocite, (3) as a benzene-insoluble coating on the chalcocite. Reduction in the amount of xanthate added leads to disappearance of form I then of form 2. With minute quantities of added xanthate, substantially all the reagent is of the "unleachable" kind. Yet this unleach-able xanthate can be dissolved by pyridine to form a soluble cuprous xanthate complex, and it is sufficient in effectiveness to make chalcocite flotable even if insufficient in quantity to form a complete mono-molecular film on the mineral. In that study it was also found that chalcocite abstracts cuprous xanthate from benzene so1ution, in what may (or may not) be a case of molecular adsorption. It seemed desirable, therefore, to study further the "unleachable" xanthate on the chalcocite, and particularly to ascertain whether it is formed as a result of the benzene leach or is actually formed during the conditioning of chalcocite in aqueous xanthate solution. A 'splendid tool to make such studies has recently been perfected; that is, the use of radioactive spies or tracer atoms. With this tool, it was thought possible to answer the problem stated above, but, unfortunately, this did not prove to be true. Answer to the flotation question was clouded by the existence of rapid and selective diffusion of copper atoms in the solid mineral—a phenomenon that was totally unexpected yet remains interesting and perhaps important. Method of Radioactive Spies The method of radioactive spies is discussed in many places. Two convenient references are the article by Evans2 and the book by pollard and Davidson.3 The method was first developed by van Hevesy and paneth in 1013, when only natural radioactive isotopes were available. These isotopes are few in number, and so the method remained limited in scope. Recently the synthesis of over 350 active isotopes of all the known stable chemical elements4 has opened widely expanded possibilities for the method, A fundamental tenet of the method is that a radioactive atom and a nonradio-active atom are exactly alike until disintegration of the radioactive atom. Then, by its sudden death, the spy reveals its location. The relative abundance of spies at various locations makes it possible to ascertain the relative abundance of the corresponding nonradioactive atoms at the same times and locations. Supported by the vigorous capital investment of the heavy and chemical industries and by the ever-increasing demand for durable consumer goods in the past decade, Japan has now emerged as the world's third largest steel producer, surpassed only by the United States and the Soviet Union. In 1968, the crude steel production is expected to exceed 50 million tons; the per capita steel consumption at that time will reach 886 lb, approaching the level of Western Europe. Characteristics of the Japanese steel industry is the high dependence of raw materials on overseas sources. Before World War II the industry relied on North China and Manchuria for coking coal, and on middle China, Hainan Island, the Philippines and the Malayan Peninsula for iron ores. After the war, the major sources of iron ores were shifted to the Philippines and the Malayan Peninsula, supplemented by shipments from the United States, Canada, India and Goa. The United States, in addition, became the primary source of coking coal.

THE unusual physical, electrical and magnetic properties of the iron-nickel alloys has given rise to a voluminous literature. This work will be reviewed critically in "The Alloys of Iron and Nickel," a monograph of the Alloys of Iron Research Series, soon to be published. In what follows we shall therefore confine ourselves to those of the earlier investi-gations that involved the use of X-ray crystal-structure methods. The earliest X-ray work on the iron-nickel system was by Miss Andrews1. Using the powder method of X-ray analysis purely as a means of identifying the phases present, she located a region between 20 and 30 weight per cent nickel in which body-centered and face-centered phases coexisted. No lattice constants nor details of heat-treat-ment were reported. Bain2 also reported some qualitative observations. McKeehan3 made a systematic investigation over the whole of the system, giving many of his alloys four and some five different heat-treatments. In alloys furnace-cooled from 900° to 950° C. he found two coexisting phases between 0.15 and 30 per cent nickel. The precision of the lattice-constant measurements was low in comparison with what can be obtained today.. Even for alloys of the same heat-treatment, differences in the constants were often between two and ten parts per thousand. In regions where no change of lattice constant with heat-treatment should occur, differences of the same order of magnitude were found. Since the maximum change in the lattice constant of nickel with change of composition is only about 2 per cent of the constant for pure nickel, these variations in the constants for a given alloy cause the points

Pilot-plant and laboratory tests were made on blends of steel plant flue dust and portland cement to determine whether the flue dust could be pelletized for use as a source of iron in dry process cement manufacture. Strength and setting time results showed that an acceptable agglomerate can be made with a Type II portland cement binder. Abrasion-resistant and well-sized pellets were made in a horizontal drum, using a simulated closed circuit, with a binder content of 7.5% and a moisture content below 15%. Pellet quality was found to be relatively insensitive to changes in binder concentration above 5%. Simulations of stockpiling and weathering indicate that little difficulty would be encountered with use of the flue dust pellets in cement plants.

Financing the acquisition of a going coal mine operation has not had the exposure other finance-oriented projects have had. Therefore, C.I.T. feels that coal mining people and financial people should improve their understanding of the factors involved in this important type of acquisition. The discussion consists of two major subjects: analysis of the acquisition of the property, and sources and terms of funding the acquisition. Source and Terms of Funding There is a need to keep the competent medium-sized independent operator in the coal business, especially in these times of energy shortage. The creation of a resale market for coal mines encourages new investment in the coal mining business by medium-sized operators and their financial backers. Who provides debt and equity financing to acquire going coal mine operations and on what terms?

Interfacing new or improved unit operations SUBMODULES with the EXECUTIVE of a macro analysis simulator usually requires modification of the input data. For example, particle processing SUBMODULES that are sufficiently general in nature to provide useful predictions require input data for rather narrow size fractions. Such data is not always available for the EXECUTIVE and must therefore be generated by the SUBMODULE. A successful interface to allow incorporation of a new SUBMODULE for comminution and one for classification in a general stream state flowsheet simulator is presented. The general nature of the SUBMODULES, as well as the logic of expanding and contracting the required data input is discussed.

An error lzas been found in the conventional way of determining the time exponent of linear shrinkage for the solution-precipitation stage of liquid-phase sintering. Large amounts of shrinkage due to initial rearrangenzent result in erroneously low exponents and tni si dentification of the rate-controlling process. Two alternative, mathematically correct, methods of calculation are applied to existing data on Fe-Cu, WC-Co, and Tic-Ni-Mo. This results in reidentifi-cation of the rate-controlling process and somewhat better agreement with related data. In each case the solution-precipitation process is solution-controlled and not diffusion-controlled. THE liquid-phase sintering process has been the object of a considerable amount of research for many years. Linear shrinkage vs time data at various sintering temperatures have been used recently in an attempt to identify the prevailing mass-transport processes in a number of metallic and nonmetallic systems. There is an analytical error inherent in the methods previously used for handling data during the "solution-precipitation" stage of shrinkage which must be recognized before the correct rate-controlling processes can be determined. It is the purpose of this paper to show how the error has affected previous conclusions and to suggest corrections. A number of mechanisms have been proposed to explain experimental observations during sintering in the presence of a liquid phase. The earliest of these is due to Price, Smithells, and williamsl who attributed the observed growth of the solid phase to the simultaneous solution of smaller particles and growth of larger particles. From the work of Lenel et al.2,3 and Gurland and Norton4 has come the suggestion that the liquid-phase sintering process may be divided for analysis into three steps: 1) rearrangement upon formation of the liquid phase; 2) solution and reprecipitation of the solid phase in the liquid; and 3) "coalescence" or a final stage of sintering, characteristically slower than the solution-precipitation process. The sequence of steps is shown schematically in Fig. 1. Kingery5 presented a thermodynamic and kinetic analysis of the first two "stages" of the liquid-phase sintering process in which the functional dependence of lineal shrink- age on time at temperature was used to identify the rate-controlling mass-transport process. Table I summarizes the time dependences and processes considered by Kingery.5 This method of data presentation has been employed by Kingery and coworkers for Fe-CU,6 WC-Co, and a number of nonmetallic systems," and bv Whalen and Humenik for Tic-Ni-Mo and Fe-cu.8 In each of these studies, the rate-controlling step during the "solution-precipitation" stage was identified from the slope of the curve in that stage on a logarithmic plot such as Fig. 1. However, in all of the previous studies, at a certain composition, relatively large amounts of shrinkage due to rearrangement preceded the solution-precipitation stage. The yield and fracture characteristics of a Ti-8 pct A1 alloy have been examined at room temperature as a function of exposure temperatures to 1700°F. Em-brittlenzent of the alloy is observed to occur following exposures below 1280°F, the critical temperature for formation of ordered Ti3Al particles. Presence of Ti3Al particles results in an increase in the yield and flout stresses which, for a given exposure time, are a maximum at the critical temperature. Embrittlement is attributed to the occurrence of plastically induced fracture controlled by the increase inflow stress. This interpretation is compatible with the decreasing ductility and increasing crack popagation rates observed with increasing exposure time below the critical temperature. Slip line observations and measurements of the gain size dependence of the yield stress indicate that the slip character of the alloy is not influenced by exposure treatments below the critical temperature. ThE potential usefulness of Ti-A1 alloys in structural applications has prompted considerable interest in studies of their microstructure and mechanical characteristics. The relatively recent surge of interest in the system and at the same time its complexities are indicated by the fact that despite numerous recent efforts14 there has not even been general agreement upon a phase diagram for the system. However, most of the Ti-A1 alloys of commercial interest range in aluminum content from 5.0 to 8.5 wt pct where most investigators achowledge the existence of the ordered Ti41 phase. Goldak and parrs confirmed the existence of Ti41 from X-ray diffraction analysis of the stoichiometric composition while Blackburn6 has determined its presence in commercial Ti-8 pct A1 alloys by electron diffraction analysis and dark field transmission microscopy. The embrittlement of Ti-8 pct A1 alloys was initially reported by Crossley and carew7 who showed that aging in the temperature range of 750" to 1110°F resulted in extreme brittleness. This behavior was later confirmed and correlated by Soltiss to the presence of long-range order in the commercial Ti-8 pct Al-1 pct Mo-1 pct V alloy (Ti-8-1-1) which exhibited anomalous creep and yield strength behavior at 950°F. This investigation was designed to study the mechanical characteristics of a binary Ti-8 pct A1 alloy in order to further examine the nature of the embrittlement behavior reported for the alloy system. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A Ti-8 pct A1 binary alloy was obtained from the Wah Chang Co. in the form of 0.050 in. sheet. The chemical composition of the alloy is given in Table I. Heat-treatment of the alloy was conducted in evacuated vycor capsules for the tensile sDecimens (1.25 bv 0.25 in. gage section) and in evacuated stainless steel jackets for the crack growth-rate panels. All specimens were annealed at 1700°F for 24 hr and water quenched before an exposure at elevated temperatures. Tensile testing was conducted at room temperature in an Instron testing machine equipped with a pushbutton control for instantaneous control of the cross-head motion. In this manner the change in stress, Aa, accompanying an increase in strain-rate by a factor of 10 was measured immediately after yielding. The crack growth-rate panels used were 3 by 18 in. with a precrack 0.33 in. long cut into the center of the panel. The panels were cycled at a maximum gross stress of 40,000 psi at a maximum to minimum tension stress ratio of 20. Cycling of the specimens was continued until the crack propagated the width of the panels. The crack length was intermittently measured during slow crack growth. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Correlation of Embrittlement to the Critical Temperature for Ordering. Blackburn6 has found that the critical temperature, T,, for the formation of Ti41 in a Ti-8 pct A1 alloy with an interstitial content on the order of that given in Table I is approximately 1245°F. The South-Central Osa Peninsula produced around 30,000 kg (100,000 troy oz) of gold since prehistoric times. Gold freed by erosion from quartz lodes in the Mesozoic Nicoya ophiolite complex was reconcentrated through three generations of Quaternary sedimentary deposits. Resultant gold placers grade upward from 1 g/m3 (0.03 troy oz/m3) and are of moderate size.

The Ti-Cr-O ternary system has been studied in detail near the titanium-rich corner within the limits of 10 wt pct 0, and 20 wt pct Cr. Studies were extended, but not in detail, to the region beyond 25 wt pct 0, (50 atomic pct) and 62 wt pct Cr (60 atomic pct). Four isothermal sections at 1400°, 1200°, 1000°, and 800°C are presented as well as two vertical sections at 1 and 2 wt pct 02. DURING the last decade much interest has been shown in the development of high strength titanium alloys for high temperature and corrosion resistant applications. Extensive research is being carried out at present, as the current literature indicates, in order to study the properties of titanium and to develop improved alloys. Two of the important alloying elements in commercial titanium alloys are chromium and oxygen and it would be desirable to know their combined influence upon titanium. For this purpose the present work was carried out to investigate the titanium-rich corner of the ternary system TiICr-0. The binary systems Ti-Cr and Ti-0 have been published recently. The Ti-Cr system was studied by several investigators " and their results are in close agreement. The eutectoid decomposition of the B phase has been shown to be extremely sluggish. TiCr, was the only intermetallic compound found in this binary system and was formed at 1350°C by a transformation from the p phase. TiCr? was established as the cubic C 15 (MgCu,) type of structure with 24 atoms per unit cell and was designated as the y phase. This terminology will be adopted in the present work. There was disagreement about the actual composition of this compound among the several investigators, although it is evident from their data that the compound probably has a solubility range of about 2 to 3 pct and is in the vicinity of 65 pct Cr. It has been indicated recently that a high temperature modification of this y phase (TiCr,) existed at a temperature above 1300°C." ' This high temperature modification was identified as a hexagonal C 14 (MgZn,) type of structure with 12 atoms per unit cell. The exact transformation temperature from the high temperature phase to the low temperature phase has not been established. A considerable hysteresis was observed and, due to the sluggishness of this transformation, the high temperature phase often co-existed with the low temperature phase at temperatures below 1300°C. A preliminary study of several Ti-0 compounds and the Ti-0 system had been carried out by Ehr-1ich."-"' The most complete binary Ti-0 system was the one reported recently by Bumps, Kessler, and Hansen." The first intermediate phase found in the system was the 8 phase which formed by a peritec-toid reaction of the phases a and Ti0 at temperatures below 925 °C. This reaction is extremely sluggish. The structure of this 8 phase was tentatively identified by these authors as being tetragonal and the lattice constants were found as c,, - 6.645A, a,, = 5.333A and c/a = 1.246A. Experimental Procedure The raw materials used for this investigation were TiO,, electrolytic chromium, iodide titanium, and sponge titanium. The TiO, was in the form of powder of chemically pure grade (99.8 pct pure). The chemical analysis of the electrolytic chromium was: 0, 0.50 pct; Fe, 0.07; Cu, N, and C, 0.01; and Pb, 0.001. The oxygen in the chromium was calculated as part of the final oxygen content of the alloys. The alloys were prepared by the cold crucible method using a tungsten arc. The entire system was evacuated and flushed with purified helium three times and then filled with helium. Each alloy was melted, turned over, and remelted at least four times to insure homogeneity. The total melting time was generally from 6 to 10 min. A master alloy of 25 pct 0,-75 pct Ti was prepared to facilitate alloying by melting compacts of TiOl powder with either iodide or sponge titanium, yielding the compound TiO. It was found necessary to bake the TiO, powder compact at about 150°C to remove adsorbed moisture. This was done to prevent the disintegration and spattering of the compact when the arc was struck. TiO, powder dissolved quite readily into the melt and no other trouble was encountered.

Introduction If a subject this broad were to be covered in even moderate detail, it would require a set of books about the size of an encyclopedia. Since an acceptable length for this paper is a small fraction of one book, it will have to consist of a few samples of the subjects that I think are the most pertinent to World Fossil Fuel Economics. I plan to discuss the trends in world energy demand, particularly in the U. S. and Europe; the consumption patterns and cost patterns of oil, gas and coal; the prospects of synthetics; and some of the effects of government regulation of fuel economics. World Energy Demands Fig. 1 shows Free World energy consumption by principal areas for the period from 1950 to 1970 and a forecast for the period from 1970 to 1985. These figures include only the measurable forms of energy. An example of energy consumption that is not measured is the wood a peasant might cut in the forest and bum in a fireplace to heat his home. This omission probably is a very small part of the total. This forecast is not identical with that of Wayne E. Glenn (see Page 22), but the differences in total energy consumption are not significant. The U. S. consumption, which was 55 percent of the world total in 1950, had declined to 45 percent by 1970, and is expected to decline further to 38 percent by 1985. Western Europe has consumed 28 percent of the total from 1950 to 1970 and is expected to lose share slightly between 1970 and 1985. The most spectacular gainer is Japan, which increased consumption from 2.5 percent in 1950 to 7.5 percent in 1970, and is expected to reach nearly 17 percent by 1985. The over-all Free World total has grown from 62 quadrillion Btu (equivalent to 29 million B/D of crude oil) in 1950 to 151 quadrillion by 1970, an average growth rate of 4.5 percent/year. This total is expected to grow at a rate of 5 percent/year between now and 1985, reaching 315 quadrillion Btu (equivalent to nearly 150 million B/D). Fig. 2 shows which fuels supplied this energy between 1950 and 1970, and gives an estimate of how it will be supplied between 1970 and 1985.

(written discussion ?).-The effect of reducing gases on hot solid copper has been known for many years in the copper industry, and precautions taken to guard against it in the general practice in copper heating and annealing. In view of the statement that Bengough and Hill, in 1910, were the first to suggest the possibility of the formation of gas within the copper itself, it is interesting to note that in Harper's Magazine for April, 1904, an article, "Life and Diseases of Metals," by Professor Heyn, illustrated the effect of reducing gases on copper by a photograph, which is shown in Fig. 1. This he entitled "Copper burst asunder by disease." After referring to the effect of hydrogen on steel, he makes the following remark: "Similar symptoms of poisoning, caused by hydrogen or gases containing hydrogen (as gas for lighting purposes), are apparent in copper when exposed to red heat. Not every kind of .copper is susceptible to this poisoning in equal degree. Copper per-fectly free of cuprous oxide is entirely exempt from poisoning. Most of the various coppers of commerce, however, contain cuprous oxide, formed during the smelting process while exposed to atmospheric influences. In such coppers, containing cuprous oxide, hydrogen causes a terrible disease on the copper being heated red hot. The copper bursts asunder and is permeated by cracks. This disease is practically incurable and can be eradicated by resmelting only. The results work destructively according to the amount of cuprous oxide contained in the copper." It must have been evident to Professor Heyn, as it was to us on reading this article, that the bursting asunder of the copper was clue to the formation of steam. Practical copper heaters have known for many years that it was quite possible to produce blisters, or large gas holes, in the interior of copper plates or bars by heating to a high temperature in reducing gases. These facts, of course, do not detract from the value of the study of the action of hydrogen gas that has been made by Mr. Pilling, but simply illustrate that the practical effect of reducing gases on furnace-refined copper has long been a troublesome factor in the heating or annealing of that metal.

In the Kaernthner Zeitschrift, No. 2, 1881, p. 53, et seq., Prof. Ledebur details some experiments on the power of various silicates of lime and alumina, magnesia and alumina, and lime, magnesia and alumina, to remove sulphur from pig-iron, from which it appears (as has long been recognized in practice) that the more basic the silicate the greater the quantity of sulphur it will take up; but also that for the same grade of silicate, this quantity is greatest for the lime-alumina silicate and least for the magnesia-alumina silicate, the lime-magnesia-alumina silicate occupying an intermediate position, and he concluded therefrom (p. 59) that, for the production of pig-iron low in sulphur, pure limestones are to be preferred to those containing magnesia. During the past several years Climax Molybdenum Co. has been engaged in testing various types and sizes of hollow drill steel. The majority of tests have been on 7/8-in. hexagon st.ee1, inasmuch as it represents approximately 70% of total drill steel consumption at the Climax operation. Prior to December 1960, tests on 7/8-in. hexagon drill steel were conducted on steel with a forged collar and, in most cases, with a threaded bit connection. Through these tests and research, some improvement in steel life was achieved by making changes in heat treatment, design and alloying constituents. However, during that month, research and testing commenced on a rubber collar which was designed to replace the forged collar on 7/8-in. hexagon drill steel. Manufactured by the LeRoi Div. of Westinghouse Air Brake Co.. the collar. is very simple in design, consisting of a 1 ½ -in. diam steel cylindrical sleeve 2 in. long, containing a bonded rubber insert and attached to the steel with an epoxy cement

Recently the long-chain primary amines have been used extensively for the flotation of silicate minerals. The use of amines to float sulphide minerals has been investigated by several authorsl-5-l8 but most of this work has been done with the short-chain (less than six carbon atoms) primary amine compounds or the more expensive secondary, tertiary and quaternary amines. Perhaps the fact that the long-chain amines are good collectors for the common gangue minerals has led investigators to omit them from consideration as collectors for the selective flotation of metallic sulphides. The work reported in this paper was designed to investigate the use of a typical long-chain amine salt, laurylamine hydro-chloride, as a collector for the flotation of galena-sphalerite ores. The results show that laurylamine hydrochloride (LAmHCl), when used in small amounts, is a good collector for the selective flotation of sphalerite and galena from the common gangue minerals. The differential flotation of sphalerite from galena was not accomplished but the amine flotation of sphalerite after the standard xanthate flotation of galena is possible. The experimental work reported herein is not complete enough to be able to say whether amine flotation of lead-zinc ores would prove superior to xanthate flotation, or whether the method is even applicable to a more complex ore than the one used for this work. However, the apparent reagent costs for the flotation operations described in this paper seem to be less than for xanthate flotation. This fact alone should be sufficient to encourage the millman to investigate the use of these amine reagents, especially as these reagents are available on a commercial scale at a reasonable price. This paper has as its secondary purposes to illustrate how contact-angle measurements have aided in this investigation, and to bring forward some evidence concerning the mechanism of the collecting action of primary amines. Contact-angle Tests The contact-angle measurements were made by the method described by del Giudice6 and used in recent work by Taggart and his collaborators.7-9 The mineral specimens for the contact-angle tests were carefully chosen, to avoid cracks and inclusions of other minerals. All specimens were mounted in "transoptic" plastic mounts and the surfaces were cleaned by polishing with levigated alumina on a cloth-coverkd glass polishing wheel. Distilled water was used on the lap during the polishing and at all subsequent steps in the contact-angle tests. The mounted mineral specimens were handled with glass forceps and special care was exercised to prevent exposure of the clean surface to air or any other source of contamination.
