For this you should have the moulds full, and they should have come out very well, for in truth reason does not allow that they turn out otherwise for one who uses precaution. [II2V] Then you have taken your casting from the pit and have freed it of clay. Since I have told you nothing beyond this, do not be dismayed if you see the castings so rough and in a form that scarcely shows what they really are, for I wish to open up part of the way into the great labor of finishing them so that it may seem to you that you have been somewhat helped by me. Therefore, when it is a gun, first see that the iron spindle that has been placed in the middle of the core is taken out. You can do this easily by striking the heel of the core, especially if the spindle had first been covered with ashes, hemp, or a little rope. Then saw off the feeding head above the mouth, using either a dun steel saw with tiny straight teeth that has been tempered with oil or some other fat, or a hay sickle whose edge is gently hit by a little hammer. Then have the clay that is attached to the curls or other bronze parts lifted away with a chisel. Then with a scouring brush and water uncover the emblems, coats of arms, borders, and cornices that you made as ornaments. Striking it with a hammer, push inwards every superfluous bit of bronze. Finally, having cleaned the bronze by washing, scraping, and cutting away every bit of clay, strike its surfaces gently with a large hammer and thus make it very smooth. Likewise finish the mouth and all its cornices as exactly and completely as possible with files and any other instrument that serves best. Then take a long, powerful tool that has some steel on the point, made like a chisel and somewhat bent, or with three points like the iron blade

The transportation of solids in pipe lines is a matter of deep concern in many fields of engineering. Much experimental and theoretical work has been done in an effort to devise means of designing pipe lines that will satisfactorily transport given solid loads, but there remain many unanswered questions in this field. The present discussion will be confined to a rather narrow portion of this field and will endeavor to point out certain factors that may well be considered when comparing the relative economy of various installations. The data have been presented previously but a new interpretation was prompted by a suggestion in a paper by Professor O'Brien,' of the University of California, that the friction work per pound of dry material should be considered in determining the relative efficiency of various installations. This method of considering relative economy in various pipe lines leads to some rather unexpected conclusions, especially with reference to the economy of large pipe sizes. A previous suggestion by the writer concerning the economy of a rather peculiar type of installation is strengthened. It is not believed that the considerations set forth herein apply directly in the case of dredge lines, where economy is largely a matter of a high rate of pumping in order to reduce the unit overhead charge. However, it is believed that some value may be gained from these considerations in cases involving the disposal of a fixed amount of solids per unit time with a minimum expenditure of energy and at a low cost for replacement of worn pipes. Such situations are not uncommon in the disposal of mill tailings and the disposal of solids deposited from irrigation waters. It was found that data leading to general conclusions for various pipe sizes were not available but certain definite trends are indicated and methods of analyzing available data are presented in the hope that they may be of assistance in preparing engineering estimates on designs of pipe lines of the type described above. Energy Requirements Carrying out the idea contained in Professor O'Brien's paper concerning the method of computing energy required to transport solids, the following analysis leads to some rather interesting conclusions. As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines-sponsored project on the utilization of "stiff" backfill to minimize potential rock burst hazards, a finite element study was undertaken to predict stresses and displacements around a stope mined up from the 5400 level of the Sunshine mine, Kellogg, Idaho. This stope was to be backfilled using a high-modulus fill. In preparation for that configuration, certain instrumentation was installed near the 5400 level to monitor stress changes. Due to untenable economics, only 2 cuts of the stope were ever made. This paper presents the results of the instrument readings taken during the first cut and compares them with the numerical predictions, as well as presents the modeling results of closure and fill stresses in the stope if it had been mined.

Over 200 billion tons of coal reserves lie locked up in deposits west of the Mississippi River-and of this, well over 100 billion tons are recoverable only by underground mining methods. Yet, because of the associated problems of unfavorable economics and inadequate technology, western underground mines contribute less than 2% to the annual US coal production. In order to reach the billion-ton coal production level called for by President Carter, it a pears the majority of new coal development will come from the West. But for this to be possible, new mining methods and equipment must be designed to match the unique thick seam conditions.

Possible interactions of the perfect dislocations of six slip systems or the c dislocation with the (10i2f (ioii), {ioIi}(ioiZ), {1122}(1123), and {1121}(ii26) type twins in hcp metals have been analyzed from the crystallographic and the energetic points of view. Twenty-six distinct types of possible interactions were identified, and those selected based on crystallographic constraints were examined for their energetic feasibilities by use of the anisotropic energy factors. No long-range elastic interaction exists for a dislocation when its Burgers vector is parallel to the twin interface. Under a suitable applied stress, a screw dislocation can cross slip at the twin interface. For basal mixed dislocations in cadmium and zinc, the interaction with {1012} twins is found to be attractive, indicating that incorporation of these dislocations into the twins is energetically feasible and that twin growth will result. On the other hand, the interaction between both basal and Prism mixed dislocations and the {1012} and (1121) twins is found to be repulsive in Mg, Co, Re, Zr, Ti, Hf, and Be. This indicates that under an applied stress a local stress concentration will develop due to a dislocation pileup at the interface, which may result in a site for either the nucleation of other twins or the formation of a crack, depending on the cleavage strength. WHEN a metal undergoes plastic deformation, a certain configuration of slip dislocations will result in a state of dislocation pileup against an obstacle. The stress concentration thus developed may enhance the process of twin nucleation and also twin growth. Furthermore, once formed and dispersed in the crystal, twins can act as effective barriers against slip dislocations. The degree of such mutual influence or interrelation between slip and twinning is generally known to be pronounced in the case of hcp, metals. It is also known that deformation by twinning occurs more commonly in hexagonal metals than in cubic metals. In fact, under suitable stress states, all hexagonal metals exhibit {1012) <1011> type twinning.&apos; In addition to this common type, deformation by (1151) <1126> type twinning occurs in zirconium, titanium, and rhenium, which show remarkable ductility.&apos; The importance of twinning during general deformation to the ductility of hcp polycrystals has been briefly discussed in recent review works.2&apos;3 The purpose of this paper is to analyze the interaction between slip dislocations and twins in the hcp structure and to discuss the nucleation and growth processes of twinning and the role of twinning in the <"°" noil) o, 1/3[112O] (OOO2) 1/3[1123] Fig. l—-Slip systems in hcp structure. ductility of hexagonal metals. The problem will be discussed from the geometric and the energetic points of view in a manner similar to that of the previous work on zinc.4 Since hcp crystals deform by several slip and twin systems, numerous interactions result as possibilities. The Burgers vectors of six slip systems and the c dislocation shown in Fig. 1 and the four twin systems listed in Table I are considered here. A complete tabulation of the possible interactions is followed by discussion of those that are more likely to occur on the basis of crystallographic constraints and energetic considerations. 1) CRYSTALLOGRAPHY OF TWINNING The crystallographic elements, K1, K2, n1, and n2, for the four compound twin systems are now well established.= A unit cell with the base vectors n1, and n2 is shown in Fig. 2 for each twin system. The unit cell before twinning is shown in solid line, and the corresponding unit cell after twinning is shown in dashed line. Also shown in Fig. 2 are the following crystallographic parameters: S is the plane of shear, d the interspacing of the twin habit planes K1,Ø Iis the acute angle between n1, and n 2, e is a numerical factor, and q is the number of K, lattice planes intersected by 17&apos;. These parameters can be expressed in terms of the axial ratio, y = c/a, as listed in Table 11. The macroscopic shear strain of twinning, s, and the magnitude of a "unit twin dis-l~cation,"4 bt, are also expressed in terms of y and given in Table 11. In Table 11, K1 and q1 are given in both Miller-Bravais and Miller indices. In double lattice structures, shuffling of atoms in addition to a homogeneous shear of the lattice is generally required if the original crystal structure is to be restored after twinning. Streaming-potential experiments were conducted within the Muddy- and Dakota-sandstone interval of a Denver basin well. Analysis of the data shows that, for this case, streaming potentials opposite sands were higher than those opposite shales when the mud was fresh. Streaming potentials opposite shales, however, were of sufficient magniiIlde to be important in SP interpretation. They were linearly dependent upon pressure differential, and they increased with mud filtrate resistivity. The magnitude of streaming potentials opposite sands was influenced by the characteristics of the original mud cake formed at the time of drilling. Use of mud samples taken at the time of logging may not always be satisfactory for determining streaming-potential corrections. Both the streaming and electrochemical potentials were found to be affected by the previous history of the borehole system. Following a change in mud characteristics, several days were required for SP stabilization. This was, in part, due to the mud cake acting as an imperfect shale membrane. INTRODUCTION Laboratory investigations by Wyllie,1 Salisch,2 Moore," Sen Gupta and Bannerjee,0 and Hill and Anderson&apos; have shown that streaming potentials developed across mud cakes deposited on permeable filter beds are of sufficient magnitude to be critically important in SP interpretation. Streaming potentials across shales have been reported by Schenck,&apos; Gondouin and Scala; and Hill and Anderson." The magnitude of the shale streaming potentials obtained by Schenck and by Gondouin et a1 led these authors to conclude that in many cases the shale streaming potential would approximately equal the mud-cake streaming potential. Hill and Anderson, however, obtained somewhat lower magnitudes of shale streaming potential. The field experiment described in the present paper was a cooperative project carried out by the respective operations and research departments of Schlumberger Well Surveying Corp., Shell Development Co. and Shell Oil Co. The primary objective of the experiment was to determine in the borehole the streaming-potential behavior of both shales and mud cakes under conditions approaching, as nearly as possible, those normally encountered in logging practice. METHODS AND EQUIPMENT WELL A Muddy- and Dakota-sandstone vie11 in the Denver basin was chosen for the experiment. Both sandstones were water-bearing and, since reservoir pressures in these sandstones are abnormally low (gradient of approximately 0.25 psi/ft), it was expected that studies of streaming potential could be conducted from low-pressure differentials (approximately 200 psi) to about 27000 psi by bailing mud from the hole, filling up and then applying wellhead pressure. The Choco placers, mined continuously since the earliest expeditions of the Spanish conquistadors, were exploited by the Indians prior to the conquest. Platinum is found in varying percentages with gold throughout the Choco placers and is found in minor percentages in some placers in other parts of Colombia. The Choco Department is on the west coast of Colombia between the western range of the Andes and the Pacific Ocean and extends from the San Juan River north beyond Panama to the Caribbean. The first reference in European literature to platinum was by Julius Caesar Scaliger in 1557. He did not assign any name to it but referred to it as an infusible metal found in the mines in the New World. The Spaniards had given it the name platina, which is the diminutive for plata, the Spanish word for silver. Don Antonio de Ulloa first recorded the name while on an official visit to the Choco from Spain in 1735.

In 1827, chromite was discovered near Baltimore by Isaac Tyson, Jr., who initiated the mining of chrome ore an:! later (1845) .the manufacture of chromium compounds in this country. From 1828 to about 1860 the United States, supplanting Russia, supplied chromite for most of the world. Chrome deposits were found also in California, and the Tyson Company shipped ore to Philadelphia by way of Cape Horn. In 1848, J. Lawrence Smith, an American in the employ of the Porte, discovered large bodies of chromite in Asia Minor. They were developed in 1865 and became the chief source of the world&apos;s supply for a number of years. The discovery of the large high-grade bodies in New Caledonia, and later in Rhodesia, with other foreign sources, gives at present an abundant supply for all demands. For a number of years before the great war, the United States produced only a few hundred tons of chromite annually, for local use, but during the war the demand for domestic ore resulted in a production of more than 82,000 long tons of crude ore in 1918, and it was demonstrated that the United States has reserve deposits equal to a war demand of several years&apos; duration. Now that the war is over, the country is conserving its domestic supplies by employing higher-grade but cheaper ore from foreign countries. The low -temperature tensile and creep behaviors of single crystals of copper were evaluated and analyzed in such a manner as to provide an estimate of the separate contributions of short-and long-range stress fields to strain-hardening. Furthermore, the average force-displacement diagram for thermally activated intep-section of two dislocations was estublished. This diagram plus a knowledge of the variation of dislocation spacing and the long-range back stresses with strain permits on accurate prediction of creep rates. The calculated activation energy for intersection under conditions of a constant strain rate increases linearly with the absolute tempevatus-e as required by theory. AN understanding of the detailed mechanisms for strain hardening constitutes one of the principal unsolved problems in dislocation theory. Two major models for strain hardening have been advanced in the past. The one that has received greatest attention assumes that strain hardening arises exclusively from long range interaction stresses between moving dislocations and piled-up arrays of blocked dislocations on the slip planes. This type of interaction was first announced by Taylor&apos; who revealed that the back stress fields due to a simple uniform array of positive and negative dislocations entrapped in the deformed crystal would result in parabolic hardening. Shortly thereafter Andrade and Henderson" demonstrated that the strain hardening of fcc single crystals was not parabolic, as previously thought, and finally it was recognized that a typical stress-strain curve consisted of three successive stages of deformation, niz., the easy glide, Stage I, linear hardening, Stage 11, and the parabolic hardening, Stage 111, ranges. The objections to Taylor&apos;s somewhat na&apos;ive model, which were presented so forcefully by cottrell; were largely removed by the more realistic details incorporated in Mott&apos;s analysis.5 But because Mott&apos;s theory for hardening via long range stress fields gave somewhat analogous results to that of Taylor&apos;s (inasmuch as it also predicted a parabolic rate of strain hardening whereas the observed rate of strain hardening in Stages I and I1 were linear), it was not widely accepted. Major consideration was therefore given to models, such as those which were advanced by Friedel and seegere that were formulated for the ad hoc purpose of yielding linear rates of strain hardening. The second major thought regarding strain hardening is based on the concept that it arises principally from short-range stress fields due to the interactions between intersecting dislocations. Cottrell and stokes7 showed, several years ago, that the constancy of the flow stress ratio at two temperatures regardless of the strain was inconsistent with the concept that strain hardening arose exclusively from long-range back stresses. The argument that strain hardening was primarily due to local interactions of intersecting dislocations was presented in considerable detail by asinski.&apos; Extending Basinski&apos;s method of analysis of the intersection process, Mitra, Os-borne, and dorn recently demonstrated that indeed the strain hardening in aluminum single crystals arises principally from local effects coincident with intersection; however, these conclusions, too, must be modified, as will be shown later in this report. The present investigation, devoted principally to the low-temperature deformation of copper single crystals, was initiated in an attempt to ascertain whether or not the same conclusions arrived at for aluminum also apply to metals, such as copper, which have much wider stacking faults. It was soon observed that the strain hardening in copper could not be attributed exclusively to local effects between intersecting dislocations. Previously no analytical method for arriving at the possible simultaneous contributions of long-range stress fields and localized forces on intersecting dislocations was available; consequently, the separation of these two factors could not be readily accomplished. In the present report a method of estimating the separate contributions of each of these two factors to strain-hardening will be presented. The authors will show that both long-range stress fields of the type contemplated by Seeger and Friedel as well as short-range forces of the type considered by Basinski are responsible for strain hardening in fcc metals at low temperatures. This method of analysis also accounts for, in a satisfactory way, the effect of stress, temperature, and strain on the creep rate under constant stress. Furthermore, in the course of presenting their methods of analysis the authors will also reveal the rather complete agreement of their experimental data with the concepts of the theory for thermally activated intersection of dislocations. THIS meeting was held at the home of the Institute in the United Engineering Society Building, 29. West 39th St., New York, N. Y., Feb. 18 to 21, 1908. The first session, held in the large auditorium Tuesday evening, Feb. 18, was called to order at 8 p.m. by Prof. Henry M. Howe, Past-President of the Institute, who welcomed the members and guests in a few cordial and well-chosen remarks. The following papers, accompanied by lantern-illustrations, were presented in oral abstract by their authors Swedenborg and Humboldt, by R. W. Raymond, New York, N. Y. Electric Power in Steel Mills, by David B. Rushmore and Karl A. Pauly, Syracuse, N. Y. At the close of the session, an informal reception in the offices of the Institute was tendered to members and guests. The second session, held in Assembly Room No. 1 in the same building, Wednesday, Feb. 19, was called to order at 10 a.m. by Prof. Robert H. Richards, Past-President of the Institute. Before proceeding with the papers on iron and steel, which were scheduled for presentation at this session, Mr. F. E. Junge, a representative of the gas-engine and electric motor industry of Berlin, Germany, gave a short oral discussion of the paper by Mr. Rushmore and Mr. Pauly, Electric Power in Steel Mills. Printed copies of the paper, Uniform Nomenclature of Iron and Steel, were distributed among the members and guests present, and the request was made for a later discussion of this important subject by letter. This paper constitutes the Report of Committee No. 24, of the International Association for Testing Materials, which was presented at the Brussels Congress in 1906. IN this paper the authors aim to chronicle the experience and salient points brought out in changing flotation reagents at a concentrator which had probably been using a mininium amount of oil at a minimum cost per ton, to a more complicated system requiring a partial chemical control. The original oils were coal tar and pine oil. The new reagents are lime, xanthate and pine oil. It was found that there were no insurmountable difficulties and eventually the cost of the new reagents per ton of ore proved to be very little more than that of the old. LIME PLANT When the question of handling lime came up there were two propositions open: (1) to handle the lime dry; (2) to handle it wet in the form of an emulsion. Granting that a dry lime feeder would function properly, delivering lime uniformly, the chief objection was the dust that would be raised when these feeders were being charged or operated, as the only possible location was on a gallery beneath which men were working. With this objection the handling of lime as an emulsion seemed to be the better scheme. The lime plant which was first installed was for experimental work on one section. This was gradually changed and developed until it was of sufficient size to accommodate 20 sections. The various changes will not be discussed and the following description deals only with the fully developed plant. Crude as it is, and perhaps somewhat expensive to operate, the lime-handling plant has been quite successful. Much has been learned which will pave the way for a better installation in the future. Burnt lime is received loose in standard gage box cars. This is the product of the kilns and has had no screening or sorting. A grab sample is taken from each car as it is unloaded. THE Cr,O-type, or P-tungsten, structure having the space group (Oh2— Pm,n) is one of the most widely occurring structures found among the intermediate phases involving transition metals. Including the phases reported here for the first time, the total number of these A,B phases now known is 39. Greenfield and Beck&apos; have correlated the lattice parameters of these phases with the Goldschmidt radius of the close-packed chains of A atoms. Laves&apos; discussed the apparent size of the A and B atoms in this structure. Gel1er" proposed a scheme for reproducing the lattice constants of the phases by the use of a list of effective C.N. 12 radii for the component elements. Reported here is a survey of the A,B combinations which appeared favorable for the stability of the Cr,O-type phase but which, at the time the investigation was begun, either had not been reported upon or had conflicting reports as to the existence of the structure. Seventy systems were investigated, and 8 Cr,,O-type structures were found. Six of these also were reported by other investigators in the interval between the start of this investigation and its completion. This survey yielded information as to the influence of the relative sizes of the A and B atoms on the stability of the phase and, for the various families of Cr,O-type phases, the effects of the sizes of the A and B atoms on the lattice constant. Likewise, a somewhat clearer picture of the connection between the position of the A and B elements in the Periodic Table and their Cr,O-type phase-forming tendencies has become apparent. IT is difficult to judge how much influence the success attained during its first year, 186465, by the School of Mines at Columbia had on developments in education for the mineral industry elsewhere in the immediately subsequent years. The facts are as follows: 1. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology began giving instruction in February 1865, with a mining course included in its curriculum. 2. Early in 1865 the faculty of the Department of Science, Literature and the Arts of the University of Michigan requested permission from the Regents to establish "a course of study to be called the School of Mines . . . Also that the degree of Mining Engineering be conferred on students who should complete the course of study prescribed in the same." A resolution authorizing this was adopted by the Regents on March 28, 1865. 3. Samuel Hooper endowed a Sturgis-Hooper professorship of geology at Harvard in 1865 with the intention of making it a nucleus of a new School of Practical Mining and Geology. 4. IN the representation of crystals by figures it is customary to draw their edges as if they were projected upon some definite plane. Two sorts of projection are use8; the ah- graphic in which the lines of projection fell at right angles and the chirographic where they fall at oblique angles upon the plane of projection. The second of these projections is the more important, and must be tr2atcd here in some detail. Two points are to be noted in regard to it. In the first place, in the drawings of crystals the point of view is supposed to be at an infinite distance, and it follows from this that all lines which are parallel on the crystal appear parallel in the drawing. In the second place, in all ordinary cases, it is the complete ideal crystal which is represented, that is, the crystal with its full geometrical symmetry as explained on pp. 10 to 13 (cf. note on p. 13). In general, drawings of crystals are made, either by constructing the figure upon a projection of its crystal axes, using the intercepts of the different faces upon the axes in order to determine the directions of the edges or by constructing the figure from the gnomonic (or stereographic) projection of the crystal forms. Both of these methods have their advantages and disadvantages. By drawing the crystal figure by the aid of a projection of its crystal axes the symmetry of the crystal and the relations of its faces to the axes are emphasized. In many cases, however, drawing from a projection of the poles of the crystal faces is simpler and takes less time. The student should be able to use both methods and consequently both are described below.

When in charge of the Glen don Iron Works, the importance of good methods of filling was forcibly brought to my attention, and it occurred to me that the first step toward the discovery of the best plans was the accumulation of exact information as to the distribution actually effected by various chargers; also, that something could be done in this direction by careful measurements in the furnace, to be afterwards recorded for comparison on drawings. The figures shown herewith have been prepared from such measurements, and nearly all of them refer to Glendon, where the fuel used was anthracite and the ore-mixture about threequarters of New Jersey magnetic ores and one-quarter of brown-ores from the vicinity of the works. Every occasion furnished by the blowing-in of furnaces was utilized, but the data accumulated rather slowly in this way; and, opportunity oEering to make special trials at no great expense, the figures from 2 to 7 were thus obtained. The trials were made by dumping a hopperful (6 barrows) of material at once into the furnace, and, when all the fuel of a round (12 barrows) had been put in, the profile of the upper surface was obtained by stretching a steel tape across the top on a diameter and at a known height. By measuring down from this with a graduated rod, the profile was easily obtained with sufficient accuracy, especial pains being taken to get correctly the crests of the ridges and the bottoms of the hollows, as many intermediate points being included as seemed necessary. This was repeated on another diameter when there was occasion. The same course was followed for the limestone and ore.

The American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was the first American technical organization to consider steel-rail specifications and sections. If I am not mistaken, the first contribution on those subjects to the Proceedings of the Institute was presented by Prof. Thomas Egleston, in 1874, and was entitled "Investigations on Iron and Steel Rails made in Europe in the Year 1873.1" The next contribution was Dr. C. B. Dudley&apos;s report of his investigation for the Pennsylvania Railroad of the wear of steel rails in their tracks, in 1878, which contribution led to a very memorable discussion that extended through several meetings.2 In 1880, Mr. C. P. Sandberg3 presented an article on rail specifications and inspection and rail sections. This was followed, in 1881, by A. L. Holley,4 in his exhaustive report on the then used American rail sections. The next contribution, I believe, was made by myself&apos; at the Buffalo meeting, in 1888, on steel-rail specifications, which I followed,6 in 1889, by a paper on steel-rail sections. Since that time there have been numerous contributions to the Transactions of the Institute in relation to the manufacture of steel rails. The American Society of Civil Engineers officially took up the investigation of the relation of rail sections to the wear of car wheels in 1888. In the prosecution of this work, the Society appointed a special committee, whose labors extended through several years and resulted in an exhaustive report to the Society in 1893.7 Later, another committee was appointed to consider specifications for the manufacture of steel rails; the labors of this committee extended over a period of several years, a final report8 being made in 1910. It was my fortune to be the secretary of both of those committees.

Two growing problems confront the preparation engineer—still further restrictions on stream pollution and a greater proportion of fine coal as more and more continuous miners come into use. The de-watering screens, centrifuges, and settling ponds that sufficed a few years ago must often be supplemented by more effective equipment, and in some instances the finest solids are now being recovered by vacuum filtration, once considered too costly in many coal washeries. Unfortunately not all slurries can be readily filtered. Some are virtually unfilter-able, and others do not permit the high cake rates needed to hold costs within reason. Often, however, these difficult slurries can be rendered filterable by flocculation. Starch and lime have long increased settling rate in thickeners and can also aid filtration. More recently there have been other flocculants, primarily synthetic polymers or gums. Reports of their great effectiveness prompted the U. S. Bureau of Mines to test their use in filtration as part of its program on recovering and cleaning fine coal. The object of the present work was to compare some of the newer flocculants with starch and lime and to test the reaction of different types of slurries to flocculation. Three natural slurries, three synthetic coal-clay mixtures, and five flocculants were tested, all with a laboratory filter leaf. Slurries and Flocculants Tested: First of the slurries was the thickener feed from the washed coal section of the Michel colliery of Crow&apos;s Nest Pass Co. Ltd., Michel, B.C. As shown by the screen and ash analyses in Table I, practically all this slurry was finer than 28 mesh, and about half the solids were finer than 200. Substantially all material coarser than 200 mesh was clean coal, but the ash content of 20.7 pct in the finest size indicates a moderate amount of impurity. This coal is medium-volatile bituminous in rank. Slurry was also obtained from the Black Diamond washery of Palmer Coking Coal Co., King County, Wash. This underflow of a 1/2-mm vibrating slurry screen is a waste product discharged to a settling pond. As shown by the data in Table I it contained about 20 pct material finer than 200 mesh, which analyzed 77.5 pct ash, indicating a high proportion of clay. The coarser sizes were also high in ash content because of the presence of bone and shale. Black Diamond coal is on the dividing line between bituminous and subbituminous rank. The third slurry, from the washery of Roslyn-Cascade Coal Co. in Kittitas County, Wash., was the underflow of a battery of 8-in. cyclones that is wasted with the coarser refuse from the plant. In both size and ash content this slurry was similar to the Black Diamond, but since it was a cyclone-underflow product, the fraction finer than 200 mesh undoubtedly contained a much smaller proportion of finely divided clay than was present in the Black Diamond slurry. The Roslyn-Cascade coal is high-volatile A bituminous in rank. Initially the slurry samples were stored in the laboratory at a concentration of 40 pct solids. A progressive change in filtration and flocculation characteristics during storage was noted, however, presumably because of progressive disintegration of the clay. After careful testing demonstrated that the slurry solids could be dried and then repulped without changing the original filtration characteristics, this procedure was adopted. The flocculants used were Separan 2610, Kylo 27, Jaguar MD-A, Idaho potato starch, and lime. The lime was used as a slurry, the Separan 2610 as a 0.10 pct aqueous solution, and the other flocculants as 0.50 pct aqueous solutions. The starch was causti-cized with sodium hydroxide before use. As some of the flocculants are reported to deteriorate on storage, new batches of flocculants were prepared every two days. Test Procedure: Fig. 1 diagrams the filter leaf apparatus employed. This consists of a test leaf having an effective area of 0.10 sq ft., a 60°, 8 1/2-in. diam cone to hold the slurry sample, a variable-speed electric stirrer, vacuum gage, bleed line for controlling vacuum, filtrate flask, moisture trap, and vacuum pump. Two filter cloths were selected—Saran SA 603, a monofilament, coarse-weave cloth, and polyethylene PO-801 HF, a monofilament, fine-weave cloth. The Saran was selected to provide maximum cake rate without regard to clarity of filtrate and the polyethylene to provide the best quality of filtrate without regard to cake rate.
