DISCUSSION Howard Howie (Knoxville, Term.)—The authors are to be congratulated on the presentation of a paper containing so much valuable information on the pipeline transportation of phosphate, as there is very little literature on the subject. The writer is especially interested in the paper, as he conceived the arrangement of the Akin and Godwin plants and was in charge of the design work and the engineering incident to their construction. The Akin and other phosphate deposits in the Tennessee phosphate area lie on beds of limestone that are very irregular. The limestone beds, after the phosphate matrix has been removed, are similar in appearance to land severely eroded by the action of water and denuded of top soil. Depressions in the limestone, called cutters, are irregular in depth with vertical or overhanging walls, having the general appearance of cracks in dried clay. They change abruptly in direction, width, and depth, and vary on the Akin tract from 1 to 25 ft in depth and from 1 to 50 ft in width. Pinnacles of limestone commonly occur in the cutters which appear, when exposed, like small clifflike islands in a river. Limestone floats also occur. The phosphate matrix fills the cutters and covers the uncuttered areas, the thickness of the cover varying continually and sometimes rather abruptly. It occurs generally as stratifications of phosphate rock and clay of varying thickness. The phosphate rock in the matrix varies in hardness and in percents of silica, lime, iron oxides, and fluorine, and the clay varies in toughness. In some places the deposit consists of narrow strata of rock almost devoid of clay streaks. In other nearby locations the clay will predominate. When it is excavated, the phosphate rock breaks into thin irregular lumps, locally known as plate rock. Limestone lumps are also excavated with the matrix. Akin plate rock is generally much softer than that occurring in other deposits in the area. Because of the above described physical and chemical variations of the excavated material, the resultant slurry varies in size distribution, specific gravity, and percent of slimes. When the rock is soft or when there is an increase of clay, the slime fraction is greatly increased as it passes through pumps and pipelines, resulting in reduced pipe friction. It is obvious that the longer the pipeline the greater the reduction of coarse fractions into fines, causing a decrease in pipe friction that cannot be accurately evaluated. The matrix is mined with a dragline that drops it into a hopper with a grid composed of 9-in. parallel bar spacings located above the hammer mill. The matrix on, and passing through the grid, is subject to the action of powerful sprays which wash it down to the hammer mill, together with any limestone lumps that are not removed before passing through the grid. The hammer mill reduces the feed to lumps of plate rock and clay, most of which will pass through the 8-in. pump suction. The mixture discharges into a pool containing the pump suction pipe. Water from a hydraulic nozzle moves the mixture to the pump suction intake. The pump, driven by a variable speed motor, is the same size as the pumps mentioned on p. 279. Provision is made to remove any lumps that lodge in a bend in the suction pipe in a manner similar to that used in the Florida phosphate fields. The hammer mill and pump units are mounted on wide steel skids so that they can be moved as the mining operation progresses. The discharge from the pump flows through an abrasion-resistant spiral welded steel pipe 81/4 in. actual inside diam, 8 in. nominal diam, for a maximum distance of 2200 ft, which is the limiting pumping distance for one pump. This pipeline, referred to hereafter as pipeline A, discharges into a ball mill without balls, which in turn discharges into a rotary screen attached to it that separates the slurried matrix into 11/4-in. oversize and undersize fractions. The oversize is returned to the mill for further reduction; the undersize is pumped to a Dorrco washer and then flows into a hydroseparator 160 ft in diam. In spite of the size reduction in the hammer mill and the blunging and washing of the slurry in its passage through the pump, pipeline, mill, and washer, the discharge to the hydroseparator frequently contains mud balls almost perfectly spherical. Sometimes the discharge from the 16,000-ft pipeline at Godwin contains mud balls the size of bird shot and smaller. This pipeline will be referred to subsequently as line B. Liquid caustic is added to the slurry at the Akin plant before its passage through the hydro-separator, which decreases the size of particles in the overflow by dispersion. In passing through pumps 1, 2, and 3 and pipeline B, the slime fraction in the underflow is increased by abrasion and blunging and also by continuing dispersive action of the caustic. The matrix for use in the experimental tests referred to on p. 279 was obtained from three small surface openings on the Akin tract that were made previous to the purchase of the tract by the Authority. Matrix used in the 2 and 4-in. experimental pipeline tests was taken from the three openings and proportioned to obtain a sufficient quantity that would be fairly representative of the average in the Akin deposits. Prospecting samples of matrix had been obtained from drill holes which showed no small variation in physical and chemical properties. Some of the physical variation is evident from the size distribution of solids in samples taken during the tests covering line B flows so thoroughly made by the Authority und'er the direction of Mr. Burt, see Table V, p. 280. Hydraulic gradients for a pipe of 8-in. diam were derived from the 2 and 4-in. pipeline tests using the so-called representative matrix as above described, and plotted on the profile of pipeline B. Gradients of other materials in slurry form passing through pipelines that bore some similiarity to the Akin matrix slurry were also plotted. After a study had been made of the hydraulic gradients plotted on the profile and the varying slurry flow that would probably occur during actual operation, three pumps were ordered, referred to as No. 1, 2, and 3 on p. 279. No. 1 and 2 pumps were installed and the third kept in reserve should the operation of 1 and 2 pumps prove satisfactory, since installation of the third pump would require an attendant, as well as the laying of 5400 ft of pipe to supply it with seal-water from the Akin plant. Subsequently, it was found desirable to install the third pump to maintain capacity when the slime fraction was low and the coarse fractions were large. Reference to Fig. 6 will show that the flow in B line goes upgrade in three locations. At the outlet at Godwin, the slurry flows between two 45" bends for an approximate distance of 18 ft to rise above the ground a sufficient height to discharge into a launder feeding the first classifier. This condition requires extra energy, which is taken care of by keeping the hydraulic gradient a sufficient distance above the high points. KEYNOTE of the mining geology sessions was the preparation for an extensive war with all that this implies as to the need for strategic minerals, both metallic and nonmetallic. Nevertheless the sessions also included many papers of less urgent, more theoretical interest. The stress of wartime production had the effect of giving an unusually full and rich program, the longest in recent years, with sessions continuing virtually throughout the meeting. Some papers dealt with geophysical prospecting as applied to mining geology; others were concerned with the grand strategy of mineral reserves and thus involved the industrial minerals; such "borderline" subjects were presented before sessions held jointly with the Geophysics Committee or the Industrial Minerals Division.

Two Canadian mining companies, Noranda Mines, Ltd., and Wright-Hargreaves Mines, Ltd., have agreed to buy $500,000 worth of shares each in Anglo-American Exploration Ltd., controllers of thousands of acres of possible oil-rich land in southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Samuel Clarence Nickle, Sr., reported as possible president of the newly formed exploration company, said that $20 million in assets have been accumulated by the firm, mainly in the Williston basin in parts of the Dakotas and Montana, aid extending into Southern Manitoba and most of Saskatchewan. The M. A. Hanna Co. reported a record profit for the seventh consecutive year with total 1951 profit reaching $14,081. The company handled a record 16.8 million tons of iron ore in 1951, compared with 14.9 million tons in 1950. The company is also preparing to open four iron ore mines in the Lake Superior district which are expected to produce more than 5 million tons annually by 1954. The company built two new iron ore concentrating plants at Mesabi range mines in 1951,a with a third plant going into, operations soon.

A surface expansion was found to occur sometime after etching in Ti-A1 alloys containing 9.5 to 12.5 wt pct Al. The structure formed, grew, and disappeared with tzrrze. The surface expansion was followed by microscope observations and interferometric and lattice parameter measurements. Activation energy measurements for the growth of the "expansion structure" and chemical analysis indicated that the phenomenon occurred as a result of hydrogen pzckup during etching. It is proposed that hydrogen initially enters octahedral sites of Ti3Al coherent with a Ti and later shifts to the tetrahedral sites. It is postulated that expansion occurs when hydrogen enters the tetrahedral sites. The expansion structure disappeared, it is proposed, because of diffusion of hydrogen from the surface into the body of the alloy and because of loss of coherency of Ti3Al. In examining Ti-A1 alloys, Ence and arolinl observed markings on the surface of specimens. These markings did not appear after electropolishing only, but rather appeared only after etching. The markings appeared to grow as a function of time after etching and later seemed to disappear. Although the markings had some similarity to precipitates, showing, frequently, a Widmanstatten type of arrangement, the observation that other microstructural markings continue to be seen within the new structure suggested that it was actually not a precipitate. The source of this structure was unknown and an attempt was made in the present investigation to develop some understanding of its nature. It has been labeled expansion structure. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Alloys. Alloys in the range 6.5 to 14.5 wt. pct A1 were studied. Bars, 4 in. sq, forged from Bureau of Mines (73 Bhn) titanium consumably arc-melted 4-lb ingots,' as well as 50-g arc-melted buttons of desired aluminum contents were used. The 50-g buttons also used Bureau of Mines titanium (73 Bhn) and aluminum of 99.99 pct purity. Buttons containing up to 8.5 wt pct A1 were hot-rolled from a furnace at 900' . Those with higher aluminum contents were hand-forged on a titanium anvil, and heated with an oxygen-hydrogen torch in the region of 1200" to 1300°c. Frequent reheating kept the samples at the desired temperature range. After a reduction of about 30 pct, the samples were water-quenched. To eliminate any contamination picked up either during hot rolling or forging, at least 1 mil of the surface of the sample was taken off. B) Heat Treatment. Prior to heat treatment all alloys were vacuum-annealed to remove hydrogen. Samples were annealed at 900' until a vacuum of 10'5 mm Hg was established. After this treatment, the samples were wrapped in molybdenum sheet and heat-treated in argon-filled quartz capsules, which were broken under water or iced brine at the conclusion of the heat treatment. All heat treatments under dynamic vacuum were performed in a rapid-quench furnace. This consisted of a molybdenum-lined quartz tube attached to a vacuum system and through a stopcock to a beaker of water. At the completion of the heat treatment the vacuum stopcock was closed, the furnace shut off, and dropped below the quartz tube. Then immediately the inlet stopcock was opened and water admitted until the tube was filled. The steam formed was allowed to escape through the inlet stopcock. This method was used in heat treatments up to llOO°C. C) Metallography. Specimens for metallographic examination were ground, then electropolished using a Disa Electropol machine with a perchloric acid electr01te. Specimens were etched with R-etch.3 A standard etching time of 3 min was used, with the specimen being agitated during immersion. D) Sample Preparation for X-ray Analysis. Samples 0.2 to 0.5 mm in diam were produced from heat-treated rods which were turned to 2 mm diam on a lathe and then rotation-etched. An etchant consisting of 1 pt HF, 7 pt HN03, and 12 pt HzO was satisfactory. With the rod rotating in a vertical position at 50 to 100 rpm, a needle with uniform dimensions could be obtained. Care had to be taken to insure that the rod was at the center of rotation, otherwise cavitation developed. If a small unevenness developed, it was possible to grind it off with a fine emery paper. E) X-ray Diffraction. All X-ray work was done on a North American Phillips X-ray diffraction apparatus and a Jarrell Ash microfocus X-ray unit. The Phillips unit was used with a copper target and nickel filter. The Jarrell Ash unit was fitted with a cobalt target and iron filter. For the Phillips unit 35 kva and 20 ma were used, whereas for the microfocus unit with the 100-p fixed-focus gun 40 kv and 1.5 ma were used. It was found that alignment of cameras on the Jarre11 Ash unit was very critical. The X-ray beam contains an intense area which is not the beam center. The cameras were aligned with the intense region by monitoring the beam coming out of the camera with a Geiger counter. Adjustments were made until a maximum intensity was obtained. A Phillips diffractometer with a Brown chart recorder furnished some of the lattice parameter data. The divergence slit up to 80 deg 28 was I deg; above 80 deg, a 4-deg opening was used, while the scatter slit was1 deg and the receiving slit had a 0.003-in. opening. The general scanning rate was 1 deg per min, while peaks of special interest were rescanned at -j deg per min. The m.echanica1 properties, at high lzomologous temperatures, of the intermetallic compounds InzBi and Mg17A112 were measured as a .function of temperature, applied strain rate, previous thermal and mechanical history, and composition. Mgl,Al12 was investigated ilz compression, whereas Zn,Bi was investigated in tension. A decrease inflow stress with increasing strain was observed jor both alloys. The results obtained are discussed in terms of the dislocation-multiplication processes in these materials. MANY intermetallic compounds are reported to undergo a brittle-ductile transition at high homologous temperatures.' There is evidence in the literature that some of these compounds exhibit a large yield drop when plastically deformed.'j3 Both of these forms of behavior are shown by the covalent elements germanium and silicon4,5 and also by certain ionic compounds.8 The present work is a study of the deformation, at high homologous temperatures (>2/3 Tm), of two intermetallic compounds, In2Bi and Mg17Al12. InzBi has a disordered hexagonal structure7 (c/a = 0.598) and a solubility range of 32.3 — 33.2 at. pct Bi.8 It has a melting range from 72° to 89°C. Mg17Al12 has an ordered bcc (A12 type)7 structure and exists over the range 50 to 60 at. pct Mg8 with a melting range from 437° to 462°C. We have been unable to find any reference to previous investigations of the mechanical properties of BiIn,. Novikovg has reported that cast samples of Mg17A112 show ductility, when bend-tested, at temperatures above 380°C. EXPERIMENTAL Ingots of In2Bi and Mg17Al12 were melted under an argon atmosphere and cast, in situ, in a graphite crucible. The materials used were of 99.99 pct purity. The alloys prepared contained 66.9 at. pct In in the case of In2Bi and 58.4 at. pct Mg in the case of m17A112. The ingots were homogenized and then extruded. Two-in.-diam Mg17Al12 ingots were extruded at 375°C to give 3/8-in.-diam rod. The rate of formation of this rod was 0.25 in. per min. One-in.-diam InzBi ingots were extruded at 20°C, using a rate of 1 in. per min, to give 1/8-in.-diam rod. In both cases the extruded rod had a recrystal- lized, fine-grain, structure. (For Mg17Al12, d = 11.2 µ; for BiIn2, d = 22 µ.) Mechanical-property determinations were made in a hard-beam machine, in tension in the case of In2Bi and in compression with Mgl7Al12. The tensile tests were on specimens having a gage length of 1.1/2 in. and a diameter of 1/8 in. The compression tests on Ml7A112 were on specimens of 3/8 in. diam by 3/8 in. high and the ends were coated with poly-tetrafluorethylene to minimize friction. RESULTS In2Bi. Fig. 1 shows, particularly at the higher applied strain rates, that In2Bi exhibits a marked yield drop as the deformation increases to about 2 pct, after which the material shows neither hardening nor softening up to 15 pct strain. The magnitude of the yield drop, the stress in the region of flow under constant stress (the stress plateau), and the 0.5 pct proof stress were all dependent upon the applied strain rate according to an expression of the form

The rates of cementation of pd11 on electropolislzed copper cylinders were studied in aqueous perchloric acid solutions at pdII concentrations from 0.02 to 0.1 mM. The cylinders were rotated at various high speeds to reduce the diffusion layer to a minimum thickness. In 0.1 M HClO4 solutions, the cemented palladium is dense, adherent, and shiny. The rate data indicate that there are two stages in the deposition. In the initial stage, the rate of cementation is first order with respect to the pd11 concentration. The second stage is much slower. The first stage is consistent with rate control by the diffusion of pd11 ions to the copper surface, and/or chemical reaction at the surface, and the second stage is consistent with rate control by the diffusion of copper ions from the cop-per surface through the deposit of cemented palladium, out to the main body of solution. In 0.001 M HClO4 solution, only the first stage is evident and the rate is more rapid than at higher acidities. This rate enhancement is attributed to PdOH+ ions that predominate at low acidity and aye more reactive than unhydrolyzed pdII. The deposit is porous and loose. All of the cemented deposits are Pd-Cu alloys rather than pure palladium. Activation energies are 9.5 kcal per mole in 0.1 M HClO4 and 7.4 kcal per mole in 0.001 M HClO4. CEMENTATION or displacement reactions occur between aqueous solutions of metal salts and immersed metals according to the general equation: where M1 is electrochemically the more noble metal. Although these reactions find considerable application in metals recovery processes (e.g., the cementation of copper192 or gold3), in electrorefining processes (e.g., solution purification before electrolysis4,5), and in plating and metal finishing processes,6 few studies have been made of the kinetics of such reactions.7-9 The rates of cementation reactions will depend on one or more of the following factors: a) chemical reactions at the metal-solution interface; b) ionic transport to or away from the interface;'-' and c) the character and adherence of the cemented deposit on the substrate metal,6a,10 because the deposit will inhibit the rate of transport of dissolving ions (M2m+) into the solution. In this investigation, the kinetics of the early stages of cementation were studied to obtain an understanding of the reaction mechanism under conditions in which the deposit was sufficiently thin that its inhibiting effect could be disregarded. To achieve this, very dilute solutions in Mn+ were used. Cementation rates are often fast in the initial stages and transport-contr01led.9 To find conditions under which transport control would shift to chemical control, very high stirring velocities were used to minimize the diffusion-layer thickness. Of the many possible cementation reaction systems, the palladous perchlorate-copper system was chosen for this investigation because it was believed to involve simple ion-for-ion exchange. In addition, there are no interfering side reactions, such as the reduction of hydrogen ions, and anion effects are usually absent in perchlorate solutions. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. Reagent-grade chemicals and redistilled water were used in all experiments. Palladous perchlorate stock solutions (0.02 M) were prepared by dissolving 99.5 pct Pd sponge (Johnson Matthey and Mallory Ltd.) in concentrated nitric acid, adding concentrated perchloric acid, evaporating twice slowly (to prevent PdO precipitation) to a small volume, and diluting in a volumetric flask. To prevent gradual hydrolysis of PdII, the stock solutions were made 0.4 M in HC104. Tests for pdIV (Ref. 11) and C1- were negative. Copper strips were cut accurately from 0.025-in. electrolytic tough pitch sheet, Sample 1 (Mines Branch stock or Canadian Copper Refineries Ltd., Montreal), or from oxygen-free, high-conductivity sheet, Sample 2 (American Metal Climax O.F.H.C. brand, sold by Utility Brass and Copper Corp., Brooklyn). The work reported in this paper was carried out to supplement the existing information concerning directional properties and recrystallization textures of annealed brass sheet and strip. These characteristics are of direct interest when the forming and drawing properties of such material are being considered. Among those who have made contributions in this field are Bass and G1ocker;l Bauer, Göler and Sachs;2 Phillips and Samans;3 Pratt;4 Price;5 Cook;6 Richards;7 Brick;8 and Brick and Williamson.9 These investigators have found, in general, that in brass strip that shows directional variations in properties, tensile strength has a minimum value and elongation has a maximum value at 45' to the rolling direction. The most pronounced directional properties have been found in material given the greatest reductions in rolling followed by high annealing temperatures. Recrystallization texture of brass has been variously reported as (II3)[II2], (ooi)[ioo], and a combination of (II0)[II5] and traces of the primary rolling texture, (110)[112]. The directional studies have been very informative, but actual tests appear to have been confined to material in its final condition. Tests at intermediate stages have received little attention although previous history of some materials has been partly considered. Perhaps the most comprehensive investigation was made by Cook,' who studied the directional properties of 70-30 brass strip for which the final and penultimate, or next to the last, anneals and the final reductions were varied. He found that, for any given combination of penultimate anneal and final reduction, the tendency toward the development of directional properties was reduced as the temperature of the final anneal was decreased. In addition to drawing cups and making tensile tests of the finished material at various angles to the rolling direction, he measured the frequency and the angles of twins in grains for several specimens. Plots of his twin counts showed directionality for the materials that produced eared cups. Test Materials and Equipment For this investigation, one commercial heat of 68-32 brass was cast in the form of bars for cold-rolling, I31/2 in wide and I1/2 in. thick. The analysis was as follows: 68.83 per cent copper, 0.04 per cent lead, 0.01 per cent iron, 31.12 per cent zinc (by difference). The bars were so processed to the final thickness, 0.020 in., as to obtain on this thickness all possible combinations of the variables listed below except those involving the sequence of 84 per cent penultimate reduction and 84 per cent final reduction: I. Penultimate reductions of 37 per cent, 50 per cent and 84 per cent; 2. Penultimate anneals at 800°, 900°, 1050° and 1200°F.; 3. Final reductions of 37 per cent, 50 per cent, 69 per cent and 84 per cent;

(JWR) of Brookwood, Alabama approached TMCI Construction, Inc (TMCI) to make a proposal on a program that involved the sinking of up to 10 ventilation shafts of approximately 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter and ranging in depth from 500 to 700 m (1650 to 2300 ft) for the JWR coal mines in Alabama. At this time TMCI was already constructing the first spiral underground bunker (capacity 2000 tons) in North America for the JWR organization at their No. 4 mine in Alabama. The TMCI proposal was based on the use of the mos modern large diameter shaft boring machine rather than sinking the shafts using the conventional drill blast-muck technique. The proposal was made based o: the experiences by the parent company, Thyssen Schachtbau, which has been using this type of machin in Germany for shaft boring since 1971. As a result of the TMCI proposal JWR issued a purchase order to TMCI for the construction of four 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter, concrete lined, unfurnished ventilation shafts ranging in depth from 500 to 700 (1650 to 2300 ft). An order was thus placed with WIRTH Machinen- and Bohrgeraete Fabrik GmbH, in Germany for the manufacture of a model 650/850 E/Sch "Schachtbohrmaschine" (Vertical Shaft Borer = V-mole which arrived on site in Alabama in early 1981. The first V-mole GSB 450/500 was introduced in Germany in 1971 and was capable of enlarging in one step a pre-drilled 1.2 m (4 ft) pilot hole to 4.5 - 5.0 m (14.7 - 16.4 ft). This machine has sunk 9 staple shafts and deepened one surface shaft for a total of 2360 m (7740 ft) of shafts. On the last shaft boring operation in 1978 the machine was converted as an experiment to drill without a pilot hol using a hydraulic pumping system to remove the cutting debris. A second generation machine, the SB VI 500/650, was introduced in 1977 for enlarging the pilot hole to a range of 5.0 - 6.5 m (16.4 - 21.3 ft) diameter. This machine is still in operation and has already drilled well over 2000 m (6500 ft) of shaft. The third generation of V-mole, the SB VII 650/85( for diameters from 6.5 to 8.5 m (21.3 to 27.9 ft) was: commissioned in May 1980 and has been used for two surface shaft deepenings totalling 606 m (1990 ft) with another scheduled for 1982. The main advantages favouring the use of such V-moles were identified as: 1) A reduction in manpower to the crew required in a conventional shaft sinking operation. 2) A considerable reduction in time to complete a shaft compared to conventional techniques. 3) The use of the V-mole eliminates many of the hazards encountered in conventional sinking. Based on the successful performance of the first three V-moles in Germany, Thyssen Schachtbau decided to employ this principle abroad. In 1980 a second machine of the third generation was built and is now operated by TMCI Construction, Inc. in Alabama. The first shaft was completed at the end of 1981 and this paper describes the method of operation including some unique aspects not attempted on prior V-mole operations and some of the statistics arising out of the experiences during the first shaft boring operation. THE NO. 7 MINE FAN SHAFT SITE Jim Walter Resources, Inc. was formed in 1970 to exploit the coal field in Alabama on the southern tip of the Appalachian coal field. The coal reserves amount to around 650 million tons of mainly good quality coking coal of which about 350 million tons are to be extracted over the next 30 years. Shaft sinking and preparatory work began in 1972, and at present 6 mines are producing around 5.4 million t.p.a. Annual production is to expand to 10 million t.p.a. as soon as possible, and the ventilation shafts to be sunk by TMCI play a vital role towards attaining this goal. The first shaft site is located at the No.7 mine, near Brookwood, Alabama. The actual location of the shaft relative to the production shafts is shown on the mine plan (Fig. 1), which also shows the room-and-pillar extraction system used at present. The mine plan further shows the conveyor route used for the muck removal. The geological survey showed that the strata consisted of horizontal layers of mainly sandstone, sandy shale and shale interspersed with several coal seams. The seam being extracted at the No. 7 mine is a combined seam made up of the Blue Creek and Mary Lee seams at a depth of 513 m (1682 ft) and having an average seam thickness of about 2 m (6 ft). At the beginning of September 1980 the surface site preparation and pre-grouting work was completed by JWR, and TMCI was able to commence with Stage I of the shaft sinking program - the drilling of the pilot hole.

The effect of substances such as quebracho, phosphates, and chromates, which form complexes or precipitates with barium, is discussed. The most common of substances encountered during drilling include sodium chloride, cement, and calcium sulfate while various other contaminants: usually in small amounts, may be introduced from the water, clays, and other materials used in preparation of the mud. In certain cases, for example where continued salt-water flow is encountered or massive anhydrite is drilled, special muds may be used so that the physical properties of the mud will remain satisfactory for drilling. In other cases, it is desirable to remove the contaminants so that soluble electrolytes in the system are maintained at low values. For sulfate contamination, the conlmon practice in the field is to add barium carbonate to precipitate the sulfate as barium sulfate Ordinarily such a procedure gives satisfactory results. There have been important instances, however, where addition of barium carbonate was not effective in removal of soluble sulfates from drilling muds. and it is to these cases that the present paper is directed. While it is generally known that barium carbonate is not always effective in removing soluble sulfates from drilling muds, certain inconsistencies appear in the literature as to the limitations of its use, and little explanation for the limitations are given. Varnell and Kimbrel state that "the treatment (with barium carbonate for removal of sulfate) is simple and consists in maintaining a pH of 9 with caustic soda and quebracho." They caution that concentrations of quebracho greater than 1 lb./bbl. may inhibit the reaction. In another publication', a pH of 10.5 is considered "the maximum desirable," and the indication is that as much as 2.5 lb. quebracho per barrel may be present in the particular mud under discussion. Lancaster and Mitchell5 state that appreciable amounts of phosphates in the mud will inhibit the reaction with barium carbonate and that the phosphate treatment should be discontinued at least 24 hours before addition of the carbonate. Experimental work was initiated to ascertain the factors involved in using barium carbonate for the removal of sulfate contamination in drilling muds. While the experimental data herein reported are limited, they focus attention on the pertinent factors which must be considered for successful treatment. These factors are discussed from a practical and a theoretical view, the latter being supported by equilibrium data found in the literature. Further, it will be appreciated that the factors involved in this specific study will be closely analogous to those in certain of the other chemical treatments which involve a precipitation of the soluble contaminant. A thorough comprehension of these factors should result in a more fruitful application of this type of chemical reaction to the treatment of drilling muds. EXPERIMENTAL A. Reagents Two muds were used during this investigation. For one series of tests, bentonite suspensions were prepared by dilution of a stock suspension containing 8 per cent by weight of bentonite (Aquagel). For another series, a 6.4 per cent ben-tonitic mud weighted to 9.7 lb./gal. with barium sulfate (Mag-cobar) was used. Distilled water was used in all preparations. The quebracho (72% tannin extract) was obtained from the Thompson-Hayward Co. of Tulsa and contained 11.4 per cent moisture (105 C.). All other materials were reagent grade, and concentrations were corrected for water of crystallization, if any. All concentrations are expressed in pounds per barrel (42 gallons). B. Technique The systems — either mud or water — were contaminated with either sodium or calcium sulfate after treatment with the desired amounts of sodium hydroxide and quebracbo. For treatments with barium carbonate an approximately 3-fold excess (5 lb./bbl.) was used over that computed to be required to precipitate all the sulfate as barium sulfate. RECENTLY, a new type of superalloy material called TD Nickel* has been marketed.' It is a sim- ple, two-phased alloy, consisting of thoria particles dispersed in nickel of rather high purity (Ni-2 pct Thoz). Its mechanical properties appear relatively superior to previous experimental material attempting to use the oxide nonmetallic dispersion concept (except SAP), and superior to conventional nickel-base alloys at high homologous temperatures. This is derived from an interesting method of creating the dispersion, arising during chemical processing of the nickel and thorium salts in solution while reducing the nickel to metal. An evaluation of the thoria phase was conducted at this laboratory. Material and Procedure. TD Nickel was made available, consisting of several inches of 0.470-in. rod, extruded at a ratio of 64: 1, straightened, and centerless ground. Property determinations on this rod by the supplier at 1800°F showed an ultimate tensile strength of 11,400 psi, yield strength of 9600 psi, and 6 pct elongation. Specimens were removed from the rod for as-extruded metallography, and two 1/2-in. lengths supported on high-purity Al2O9 bricks were placed in a laboratory muffle furnace for exposure at 2000° F. The furnace door was left cracked to allow a slight amount of circulation. One specimen was removed at 200 hr for examination; the other was left for 2000 hr. Metallography. The micro structures obtained for the three conditions of exposure are shown in Fig. 1. Elongation of the grain structure in the extrusion direction is readily evident. The grains appear to be up to 0.001 in. (0.003 cm) long, with a length/width ratio of about 10: 1. Allowing for modest local in-homogeneities in structure, no significant change in thoria particle size or nickel alloy grain size occurred during the 2000°F exposure. However, etching depth varies slightly from one specimen to another, changing the number of particles visible. The thoria dispersion appears to be in the order of 0.01 (min) to 0.5 (max) p diam. The minimum diameter is difficult to estimate at X10,000, and may be less. Interparticle spacing appears to be about 0.1 p. Etching effects can be seen, depending upon grain orientation. A cubic etch-pit pattern appears in certain grains, apparently when etching is started by an anodic particle of thoria, Fig. l(c). The cubic pattern appears related to crystallographic orientation, and is prominent when the [ l00 ] direction is perpendicular to the plane of polish. The grains which present a ridged appearance in the photograph appear to be oriented with the [110} direction perpendicular to the plane of polish. Analysis. The thoria particle size was measured by a line intercept method perpendicular to the extrusion direction. Only particle sizes measuring 0.001 in. at X10,000 or larger could be extimated. Within limits of experimental error, particle size distribution appears to be unaffected by exposure, Fig. 2. To check structural stability further, a grain-growth evaluation was made. The number of grain-boundary intersections was counted at X500 on each of several traces normal to the extrusion direction for each condition. It can be seen from Table I that grain diameter appears unchanged by the 2000°F exposure. The slightly finer grain diameter after 200 hr may be attributed to variations in grain size from area to area in the original extrusion. From the present rather limited study of Ni-2 Th on, it appears that: 1) for time-temperature exposure up to 2000 hr at 2000°F (Larsen-Miller parameter = 57, homologous temperature = 0.8) thoria particles of the size studied are highly thermally stable; they do not significantly react, agglomerate, or diffuse; and

Although much interest has been taken in the use of mixed collectors in flotation, this investigation is probably the first in which oppositely charged collectors have been considered. The results obtained and the techniques used could well be applied in the behavior of other mixe the behavior of other mixed collector systems and could possibly explain the effective flotation results which have been reported when various collector combinations have been used. Collectors conventionally employed in flotation systems are soluble in water, but many of their homologs of longer hydrocarbon chain length are insoluble. The properties and behavior of these insoluble compounds may be conveniently studied when they are spread as monolayers at the air/water interface on the Langmuir-Adam trough. Although some extrapolation is involved in applying effects observed at this interface to the solid/liquid interface where the action of collectors is most important in flotation, the technique nevertheless is most useful for the study and interpretation of flotation phenomena. Of particular interest in this field are investigations on the insoluble monolayers of the fatty acids, alkyl sulfates and alkyl amines; the penetration of these insoluble monolayers by soluble surface active components and their interaction with metal ions from the underlying solution.'-' Unfortunately, the insoluble xanthates and related compounds do not exhibit stable monolayer properties due to rapid oxidation at the air/water interface and, therefore, cannot be studied directly in this way. These approaches have enabled Leja and Schulman8 to suggest mechanisms explaining dynamic attachment of mineral particles to air bubbles involving collector-frother interaction and the adsorption of collectors onto mineral surfaces. In this and other papers 9-12 considerable evidence is presented to support the concept of collector-frother and metal ion-monolayer interaction and to emphasize the value of monolayer techniques in elucidating the flotation system. Molecular interactions resulting from monolayer penetration are determined by the nature of and the association between both the polar and nonpolar groups of the two molecules concerned. Stable complexes are formed on penetration when interaction takes place between both the polar and nonpolar groups, and although the resultant complexes are not necessarily true chemical compounds, the properties of the molecularly associated complexes are very different from those of the individual components. Shortening of, or changes from, a straight hydrocarbon chain in one of the reacting molecules reduces considerably the stability of the associated complex as do changes in temperature, pH and substrate composition. The effect of hydrocarbon chain length becomes most important when observed effects are to be applied in flotation studies where soluble homo-logs and, therefore, much shorter hydrocarbon chain lengths are used. The present investigation is based on Langmuir trough work carried out by Bowcott,l3 who studied the penetration of insoluble amine monolayers by potassium lauryl xanthate. Bowcott observed that cetyl amine monolayers were readily penetrated by xanthate, but found that with time the high film pressures resulting from penetration and association fell off, indicating decomposition and ejection of xanthate from the film. This decomposition was pH dependent. Of particular interest in this work were studies on an equimolecular mixed monolayer of the fully N-substituted ammonium compound, for example, cetyl trimethyl ammonium iodide (CTAI) and potassium cetyl xanthate. Despite the fact that the CTAI is water soluble and the xanthate on its own is incapable of forming a monolayer, the mixed film was stable up to a surface pressure of 67 dynes per cm. In this condensed state the xanthate was stabilized against atmospheric oxidation, although iodine injected beneath the film caused an immediate collapse. The stabilizing of xanthate against oxidation by association with an alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (TAB) could be important in flotation, and a study of the performance and behavior of mixed collectors therefore was undertaken. A phenomenological theory for a one-dimensional unstable miscible displacement similar in type to the Buckley-Leverett model but including the effects of mixing is proposed An equation giving the fractional flow of pure solvent through an oil phase containing dissolved solvent is derived including the effects of gravity and nonbomogeneities. Numer ical integration of the resulting pair of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations gives volumes of dissolved and undissolved solvent as functions of space and time. Parameters in the model which characterize mixing due to dispersion were determined from experimental data; the parmeters correlated with viscosity ratio. The results indicate that the rate of dispersive mixing is proportional to volumetric flow rate Incorporated into our equations were Koval's heterogeneity factor H. which characterizes mixing due to channeling. This allowed satisfactory predictions of displacement behavior observed in horizontal floods in nonhomo-geneous cores; but in most cases the values of H which we used were considerably larger than those used by Koval. INTRODUCTION It has been shownl,2,3 that for favorable viscosity ratios, the diffusion equation with convection satisfactorily describes the behavior of a miscible displacement in a porous media. Numerous attempts to develop a satisfactory mathematical description for the case of unfavorable viscosity ratio have been reported, but they have met with only partial success. These attempts, which are reviewed by oval! have taken two approaches: (1) development of a flow model akin to the Buckley-Leverett approach for immiscible displacement neglecting the effects of mixing5,6 and (2) simultaneous application of Darcy's Law for flow and the diffusion equation with a convection term for mass transfer.7,8,9 We set out to construct a mathematical model of Type 1 including, though, the effects of mixing. Based upon a set of hypotheses, we derived a pair of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations which describe in a one-dimensional system the combined effects of flow and mixing. To work with these equations it was necessary to develop a fractional flow formula. The combined system was integrated numerically using the method of characteristics. In our equations the mixing process is characterized by four parameters. Three of these, labeled ß, P1 and P2, account for dispersive type mixing. The fourth is the heterogeneity factor H, proposed by Koval to account for channeling due to nonhomogeneities in the porous media. Values of the parameters which would cause agreement between theory and experiment were determined by trial-and-error for miscible floods conducted in horizontal cores of both homogeneous and heterogeneous materials. Calculations were also performed for vertical floods in homogeneous cores. The purpose of this paper is (1) to present the details of the mathematical analysis, (2) to present the results of the calculations, (3) to consider what light the results shed on the mixing process in an unstable miscible displacement, and (4) to provide a firmer foundation for the correlation technique developed by Koval for predicting the behavior of unstable miscible floods. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The problem is to construct a mathematical model which describes in one dimension the observed behavior in an unstable miscible displacement. The approach is phenomenological in that the equations are based on assumptions which violate certain physical precepts known to apply to the displacement phenomenon. However, the assumptions do allow us to account mathematically for the more essential phenomena. The work is of value if we can quantitatively predict experimental results which heretofore could not be predicted, even though the synthetic nature of the model belies complete explanation of the observations. G. E. Agar (Manager, Minerals Processing Research, International Minerals & Chemical Corp., Skokie, III.) — The author notes a discrepancy between the parameters a and ß which are the slopes of the size distribution and energy-size modulus plots respectively. The reason for the discrepancy and the systematic decrease in the magnitude of a with grinding time is abundantly clear from the work of Fuerstenau8 on dry grinding. Fuerstenau shows very clearly in his Fig. 5 that at short retention times the parameter a is the same as that obtained by sizing over the complete size range. From this figure, it is obvious that sizing to only 400 mesh gave distribution curves similar to Mular's - that is, the slope apparently decreased systematically with increased grinding. As a consequence of the improper determination of a, the magnitude of ß given by Mular must be larger than the true value. In order to demonstrate this, the following Fig. 6 was taken from Mular's paper (his Fig. 1). THE steadily rising flood of gold production from all parts of the world has created an avalanche of rumors regarding the stability of the present price of this metal. Markets have been unsettled from Johannesburg to London from New York and Toronto to Melbourne, despite repeated denials from, American and British authorities of any immediate intention to alter the price. Various economists and financial writers have blossomed forth with predictions that the price would be set at the old level of $20.67 per oz.; some have even been so brash as to state That a price of $15 would be necessary to bring production within control. These effusions, based entirely upon monetary theories and with no regard to production costs, serve to confuse rather than clarify the situation.

Y.:—Do I understand correctly that the rolls are at first simple cylinders, one longer than the other, and that flanges are subsequently formed on the longer roll as the result of wear only ? Mr. Payne :—The flanges are formed by the wearing of the shorter roll into the other, which is about an inch longer. When the roll-shells are new, the longer one has machined at each end a ridge about 1/8 in. or 0.25 in. higher than the face. These slight projections help to center and steady the rolls, by locating the flanges in advance. Possibly they might be left off at the start; but Mr. Frazee has found it better, in machining the new roll-shells, to turn such small flanges upon the longer one. In his practice the feed-stream is extended a short distance beyond the two ends of the shorter roll-shell. This allows a small amount of crushing to be done between the flange-ftices and the vertical ends of the shorter roll-shell, which prevents any ridges from forming at the ends of the shorter roll-shell.

Reed detonated the first blast to signify the beginning of development work on a new copper-zinc mining venture that seems destined to focus increased interest in the mineral potential of that State. The property which is the first new base metal mine to be discovered in the northern Appalachians in 30 years, is owned by Black Hawk Mining Co., a subsidiary of Denison Mines Ltd. of Toronto. When it goes on-stream in 1966, it will join Ducktown, Tenn., as the only active copper producing region, east of the Mississippi River. According to official reports submitted by the Company to Robert G. Doyle, Maine's State Geologist, Black Hawk has found ore reserves totalling 4.5 million tons. Assays show 2.8 million tons of 2.0'; copper and 0.4 oz. of silver per ton; 1.2 million tons of 16.75% zinc and 0.58% copper; and 0.5 million tons of 6.75% lead with 4.25 oz. of silver per toil and some zinc.
