As electrical power is used to a greater extent on the Rand than in any other mining center, it is thought that a short description of the methods used and results obtained may be of interest. In comparing Rand practice with that on other fields, several general factors should be borne in mind: First, the mines are all working on large tonnages of low-grade ore (average $6.50). The annual crushing rate is about 27,000,000 tons. Second, the mines are all grouped under the financial and engineering control of mining houses, so that the results of a group, rather than an individual mine, are open for study, and practice follows more uniform lines. Third, coal of fair quality (about 12,000 B.t.u.) can be obtained for $2 to $3 per ton. Good supplies of condensing water are, however, scarce, and have to be carefully stored. Power Supply Power is supplied by the Victoria Falls & Transvaal Power Co., Ltd., and its subsidiary, the Rand "Mincs Power Supply Co. Both companies, which are practically one from an engineering point of view, operate the following stations, all fecding into the same system. The occurrence of twins in large ferrite crystals, made by a new process, was reported in a recent note.' This paper describes a typical case of such twinning and suggests, on the basis of the observed facts, why smooth slip-planes are rarely observed in this metal. Method of Preparation The material in which the crystals here dealt with were grown was made from 1/8in. Armco iron welding rod containing C, 0.04; S, 0.037; P, 0.003; Si, 0.008, and Mn, 0.02 per cent. This rod was cold drawn into wire about 1 mm. dia. A piece of this wire was supported vertically and was locally heated in hydrogen at atmospheric pressure to about 1400" C. by an alternating current (60 cycles per sec.) of about 35 amp., passed through it between a pair of traveling contacts about 8 cm. apart. The rate of travel for the case in hand was 12 cm. per hr. After some 30 cm. of the length of the wire had been heated and cooled in this manner the whole wire was immersed for a few seconds in dilute nitric acid, not restrained by alcohol. Etching was continued until, as nearly as could be judged by eye, the original smooth cylindrical surface of the wire was no longer capable of specular reflection. Measurements The wire in the etched state was next mounted in a goniometer of special form which allowed the measurement of the spherical coordinates of the normals to any plane surfaces left by the etching. These coordinates were most conveniently a polar distance, 8, from one direction of the wire axis, and an azimuth or longitude, ?, from an arbitrary prime meridian. The region to be described more particularly is shown at a low magnification in Fig. 1, which gives two different views, differently illuminated to show the spatial relationship of a crystal occupying most of the part shown and of an inclusion, or rather a series of three inclusions suspected of being twins based on the principal crystal.

WAR struck the mineral industry of Washington with cross currents that produced a peculiar result. The State's production of coal, industrial minerals, and metals for 1941, valued at $28,507,282, was increased in 1942 under war pressure to approximately $35.000,000. Meanwhile a tremendous demand had arisen for men to construct airfields and many other large projects for the Army and Navy in Washington and Alaska, and Government plants for the mineral industry costing $140,000,000 or more, as well as a call for employees in the U. S. Navy Yard at Bremerton, the sixty shipyards, the four Boeing airplane factories with many auxiliary shops, and hundreds of other plants turning out war materials. In spite of an influx of nearly 300,000 people, causing an increase of 17.1 percent in the population since 1940, according to the Census Bureau, the State clearly is still engaged in an unusual amount of war production in proportion to its population. A large proportion of the workers have been drawn from the mineral industry to the war plants, whether through motives of patriotism, high wages, or, in the Boeing plants at least, the glamour of the operation

THE principle of fractional crystallization has been successfully used to prepare high-purity (99.999 pct) Ga. Hoffman and Scribnerl removed single crystals of gallium solidifying in a gallium melt, while Zimmerman2 grew single crystals from the melt by the Kyropolous technique. In contrast, attempts at purifying gallium by zone refining have been less successful. ichards, reported that despite the passage of 40 zones through a gallium ingot, there still remained 5 to 70 ppm each of Cu, Fe, Ca, Mg, Si, Al, and Ag. Previously, Detwiler and Fox4 detected only one impurity, Pb, segregating in zone-refined ingots. These surprising results prompted an investigation of the factors controlling impurity segregation in gallium. Possible reasons for this were insufficient diffusion of impurities in the melt; recontamination of the melt by its oxide film which is not affected by the passage of the zone; reaction of gallium with the boat; sudden freezing of gallium following supercooling, especially since gallium easily supercools to and trapping of impurities at grain boundaries. Impurity segregation tests were carried out by directionally freezing gallium using the Bridgman rnethd, modified in that the molten gallium is lowered out of a furnace into a slush of dry ice and trichloroethylene, thus minimizing supercooling. Since the gallium is contained vertically, the oxide film is in contact only with the tail end of the melt. It was found that Teflon makes an excellent crucible for gallium since it is quite pure, non-reactive, translucent, flexible, machinable, and is not wet by gallium. The gallium crystals could be grown at various speeds, and the melt could be vigorously stirred by a Teflon rod moving through the gallium in a vertical reciprocating fashion. Single crystals could be grown by placing a solid Teflon plug at the bottom of the melt drilled out in such a way to cause the solidifying gallium to follow a winding path. Thus, even if many crystals are originally nucleated, only one grain will predominate. The grain structure of the gallium crystals was revealed by an etchant composed of equal volumes of HC1, HNO3 and HF, diluted with water to half strength. Emission spectrographic analyses were carried out on samples removed from the front and tail ends of the resulting gallium ingots. Typical results of this study are summarized in Table I. The rate of freezing in all three cases was about 1 in. per hr. It can be seen that even though stirring of the melt does help, it is even more important to grow a single crystal of Ga in order to obtain good segregation of impurities. The effect of crys-tallinity on the segregation of impurities was previously observed6 in the directional freezing of germanium; however, in this case, the effect was much less pronounced. This dependence of impurity segregation on the crystalline perfection of Ga may be related to its thermal conductivity which is the most anisotropic of all metals.7 The anisotropic thermal conductivity can cause the solid-liquid interface to be nonuniform, thus leading to trapping of impurities during freeing, and therefore reduced segregation. In conclusion, it is indicated that zone refining of gallium would be more successful if seeding and similar precautions are taken to insure single crystal growth. The authors are indebted to Mr. H. IT will be recalled that when educational instruction for the mineral industry began at Freiberg, at the beginning of the eighteenth century, the original aim was to organize and systematize the procedures previously followed by young men in gaining -familiarity with the technology then in use. There must have been many other ideas current, even then, as to just what a young man needed to learn in order to become capable of assuming 'responsibility for the supervision and direction of such technical work. The problem in Europe was decidedly different .from that in nineteenth-century America, because some of the European mines were actually owned and operated by the governing authority and the others were supervised, regulated, and taxed by it. The American problem was the e5cient performance of technical operations; the European one was regulatory supervision. It was natural, therefore, that in the development of educational processes in Europe stress was laid on those factors which conserved and protected the interests of the state. The study of mineralogy and geology, leading to correct judgments as to the workability and value of mineral deposits; assaying, which gave the means of quantitative measurements, as did surveying; chemistry, which furnished a better basis of understanding for assaying, mineralogy, and geology; and physics and mathematics, which are the bases for the understanding and efficient use of mechanical appliances, became the core of systematic instruction, for the mineral industry. It was early recognized that men could learn more than was already known about all of these subjects and education took on that dichotomy which still characterizes it; the teaching of established knowledge to the unlearned, and that of extending of the bounds of knowledge, now loosely termed research, which after two and a half centuries of work still shows

SEVERAL techniques have been evaluated for cooling the throat area of rocket-nozzle inserts to prevent erosion or fracture of the inserts during exposure to high operating temperatures and pressures. Self-cooled composites, such as infiltrated tungsten, have shown considerable promise for these applications. These composites can be fabricated by infiltrating the refractory matrix with a lower-melting metal or non-metal which is insoluable in tungsten. During firing, the lower-melting substance undergoes a series of continuous endothermic phase changes which absorb sufficient heat to maintain the nozzle matrix material at or below a safe operating temperature. At present, the state-of-the-art has reached a point where the refractory matrix density and microstruc-ture have been established as the critical parameters to be controlled for optimum self-cooled performance.'" Nondestructive testing has been utilized to ensure that porous tungsten billets were of uniform density and free from cracks or other defects prior to fabrication into rocket nozzle inserts. Ultrasonic-velocity techniques have been employed because of their reliability and reproducibility. The purpose of this note is to present and interpret the test data developed for porous tungsten matrices. For evaluation purposes, tungsten powders with Fisher subsieve sizes of approximately 4 and 18 p have been obtained for study from four commercial sources: the General Electric Co., Wah Chang Corp., Fansteel Metallurgical Corp., and Kennametal, Inc. Porous tungsten matrices were fabricated from the powders by hot pressing in induction-heated graphite die assemblies. Typical billets ranged from 3 in. diam, 2 in, high to 5 in. diam, 5 in. high. The ultrasonic-velocity measurement technique employed was through transmission, pulse echo at a frequency of 1.0 mc using matched barium titanate crystal transducers. The testing equipment included a pulsed ultrasonic generator, an amplifier, a specimen holder, and an oscilloscope, as shown in Fig. 1. The porous tungsten thickness was measured to i 0.0005 in, with precision micrometers while the oscilloscope achieved 0.02 psec time measurement accuracy. The time for a sound wave to pass through the billet, the bulk wave velocity, was calculated to 0.5 pct using Eq. [l]: V-} where V = bulk wave velocity, in. per psec, T = specimen thickness, in., and / = time, psec. To develop inspection standards, the bulk density of a porous tungsten billet was determined by the ASTM water-immersion technique.3 The ultrasonic-velocity measurements were completed at seventeen positions for each billet and averaged to develop a characteristic standard velocity for a particular tungsten powder at several density levels. THE 6 phase of the Cu-Sn system (Cu,Sn, = 32.53 pct Sn) was considered to be stable down to room temperature until Owen and Iball showed by X-ray analysis that it undergoes a eutectoid decomposition into the a and e phases at a temperature near 300°C. Their findings have been confirmed by other investigators,2-5 a11 of whom used X-ray diffraction studies of powdered specimens. The transformation temperature has been reported by various authors as lying between 300" and 380°C. To our knowledge, no microscopic evidence of the eutectoid reaction has been published, as yet. It was in connection with other work that longtime annealings at 300°C were conducted with alloys containing 22, 32.6, and 35 pct Sn (nominal compositions) prepared from electrolytic copper and electrolytic tin and cast in a small iron mold. The specimens were first annealed at 700°C for 5½ hr and quenched from 400 °C after cooling to, and annealing at, that temperature for 9½ hr. After this treatment the sample with 22 pct Sn was cold worked for 15 pct reduction in thickness; the 32.6 and 35 pct alloys were too brittle to be cold worked. The final anneal at 300°C was done in a sealed pyrex glass bulb for 63 days. Fig. 1 represents the microstructure of the annealed alloy with 22 pct Sn. It shows primary a solid-solution crystals in a matrix of the (a + 8)-eutectoid formed at 520 °C. The a crystals contain 8 inclusions which precipitated from a due to the decrease in the solubility of tin in copper with fall in temperature. The decomposition of the 8 phase into a (light) and E (dark) can clearly be seen in some areas of the (a + 8)-eutectoid matrix. However, the decomposition is far from being completed, even after the long-time anneal used. Figs. 2 and 3 depict the microstructures of the annealed 32.6 pct alloy, which was intended to consist entirely of 6 phase. Due to some loss in copper on melting, the composition is slightly higher in tin. Accordingly, the sample after quenching from 400 "C consisted of grains of the 8 phase with the e phase arranged along the grain boundaries and as a Wid-manstatten precipitate within the 6 grains. After an annealing time of 63 days, the eutectoid decomposition, 6 + a + e, is still in its early, initial state. The pearlitic type of eutectoid is nucleated at the c crystals, preferably those surrounding the grain boundaries of the 8 phase. The appearance of the (a + €)-eutectoid in the 35 pct Sn alloy was very similar to that shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Again, the eutectoid decomposition nucleated at the 6 phase and proceeded from there into the 8 areas. As is evident from Fig. 2, the rate of decomposition of the 6 phase at 300°C is extremely sluggish: In the representative area shown only about 5 pct of the 8 phase has undergone the eutectoid trans- formation after annealing for 63 days. On the other hand, Owen and Williams2 have reported that X-ray photographs of powdered samples with between 17.5 and 34 pct Sn did not show 8 lines after annealing for only five to seven days at 300°C. This is in accordance with the fact that the rate of reaction in powdered samples is higher than in massive specimens, as a result of the excess free energy of the powder (due to its greater surface area). A consideration of the literature shows the inadequacy of Fick's Laws to describe the diffusion of hydrogen in steels below 400°C. These laws are modified an the assumption that hydrogen is delayed at fixed sites in the lattice. Approximate and exact solutions of the resulting nonlinear system are derived for simple geometrical shapes. The results qualitatively account for the observed anomalous behavior. Experimental methods for verifying the theory are suggested. 1 HIS paper presents a new analysis of the diffusion behavior of hydrogen in steel based on a physical model which supposes that hydrogen atoms wander in a random manner through the crystal lattice, but tend to get trapped or delayed at certain fixed sites uniformly distributed throughout the metal. These sites, which will be called traps, are regarded merely as potential wells of significantly greater depth than those encountered in regular regions of the crystal lattices and no assumptions are made concerning their nature or origin. The results of experimental studies of the diffusion of hydrogen in iron and steel have usually been reported in the literature in terms of a diffusion constant D derived under the assumptions that the hydrogen concentration C is governed by Fick's laws.1 Fig. I is a composite of published graphs of the man. ner in which the values of D, so derived, vary with temperature. It is convenient to consider this material in two categories; the high temperature results above 400°C, and the results at lower temperatures. The graphs 2, 3, 4, 5 in the first class lie within a factor of three of each other and are relatively consistent compared with the low-temperature values. There is an increasing divergence in values of D with decreasing temperature till at room temperature they are spread over three orders of magnitude. Small values of D have been obtained for work-hardened specimens.' It is evident that D is a function of other variables besides temperature in this range and that these neglected variables are in some way connected with the work hardening experienced by the specimen. In view of evidence for an interaction between hydrogen in solution and dislocations9'10 and adsorption on crack surfaces,' some doubts must be entertained about the validity of Fick's laws and their associated physical model of noninteracting particles in random motion through the medium. More direct evidence of their inapplicability to the diffusion of hydrogen in steel was first produced by Darken and smith." Consider the permeation of hydrogen through a plate of thickness a under a boundary concentration Co at the ingoing, and zero at the outgoing, face. If Fick's first law1 is valid, the steady state flux P, through unit area is DCo/a. In addition, the concentration C varies linearly throughout and Qo, the mean quantity of hydrogen in the medium, is co/2. If S (x) is the specific rate of breakage of size x and B (x, y) (see Table 1 for Nomenclature) is the cumulative breakage distribution function, the Herbst Fuerstenau2 assumption is that Inserting this assumption into first-order grinding equations it has been shown" that there are then simple analytical solutions to the grinding equations, as shown in Table 2. In this context "plug flow" is defined as all material passing through the mill in the same length of time, the residence time t. The term "n fully-mixed" means that the mill has a residence time distribution" which can be treated as if the mill were n equal fully mixed sections in series. In addition it has been shown that the assumption of Eq. 1 also leads to simple analytical solutions for closed-circuit, steady-state grinding with an ideal classifier at the mill exit returning oversize to the mill feed. The solutions are also given in Table 2, with µ as the ideal classifier cut size, C the circulation ratio, and Q (x) the size distribution of the circuit product. The specific surface area of these size distributions is where the density-shape factor k. is assumed to be constant with size. In practice, most methods of size analysis or area [ ] measurement have a finite lower limit, so that the integration is really performed from xm, to xm, For a realistic degree of grinding the value of So is dominated by the fine sizes because of the 1/x factor. Consider batch grinding of a feed of size y to y + dy. The batch grinding solution given in Table 2 is then [ ] The fresh surface area produced is the area of the fines plus the area of the original material remaining minus the area of the original material, [ ] Little error is introduced by neglecting the last term on the right-hand side since at t = 0 it is zero, and when t is significant the first term dominates because of the fine sizes produced. Single crystals of vanadium were bent at 293" and 77°K to a maximum fiber strain of about 1 pct. Analysis of slip line and etch markings of- crystals deformed at either temperature show the slip planes are {112}. The slip directions at 298° and 77°K, deterwined from the asterism axes of rotation of crystals compressed in a {110} direclion, were (111). Etch pits, associated with dislocations, were observed in the plastically deformed vanadium. There was no evidence of mechanical twinning. THIS paper presents results on single crystals of vanadium plastically deformed by bending and compressing at 298° and 77°K. Bcc metals have been observed to slip on {110}, (1121, and (123) planes while the slip direction has invariably been found to be ( 111) 1 Lindley and smallman2 have studied the deformation intension of polycrystalline vanadium between 298° and 20°K and reported that at and above 77°K the deformation is predominantly by slip, but at 20°K the deformation is associated with twinning. Later, Edington and smallman3 found that single crystals of vanadium compressed in a (111) direction at 77°K deformed by twinning on { 112}( 111) systems. Clough and pavlovic4 have reported that mechanical twins were observed in vanadium loaded by impact at 77°, 173°, and 195°K, respectively. PREPARATION OF SINGLE CRYSTALS The vanadium single crystals were made from commercial vanadium reported to contain 0.03 pct C, 0.03 pct 0, 0.02 pct N, 0.0X* pct Ca, 0.0X pct Si, proximately 0.8 cm diam, 4 cm long and were grown in (100) and (110) directions. A crystal for studies of etch pits was gound to have a face parallel to a {l00} plane by the Bond crystal-orienting technique.7 In order to avoid straining, the crystals were placed on the steel mount with a low-melting organic compound (glycol phthalate) before grinding. Crystals for the bending experiments were ground to have the four side faces parallel to ( 100) planes. The crystals were electropolished8 in 10 pct H2So4 using a current density of about 3 amp per sq cm to remove the strained surface material. The crystals were bent slowly by three-point loading in a stainless-steel jig designed by Sylwestrowicz.9 The end rollers of the jig were 3.8 cm apart. DEFORMATION AT 298°K The bent vanadium crystal, after removal from the jig, had a radius of curvature of 20.4 cm over the 2-cm length close to the center loading roller, where the maximum bending moment occurred. This radius of curvature corresponded to a maximum fiber strain of 0.9 pet. The side faces contained slip bands as shown in Fig. 1. These bands are straight where the strain is high, top and bottom of micrograph, but are curved on either side of the neutral axis in the center. This curvature of the slip bands in the low-stress area may be due to cross slip. The plastically deformed crystal was subsequently electropolished and then electroetched in 10 pct H2SO4 solution, using a current density of 0.25 amp per sq cm. The structure is shown in Fig. 2. A necessary condition for a uniaxial stress distribution in compression testing is that the specimen end surfaces make full contact with the apparatus compression plates. In addition all compression surfaces must be machined perpendicularly to the loading axis. In general this condition is not sufficiently fulfilled in a simple apparatus. Therefore on application of the load the compression plate may first touch the specimen at one point only. This may cause crumbling of the specimen if the material under investigation is brittle (e.g., ionic crystals). It also precludes a precise study of the beginning of deformation as the effective cross sectional area is unknown. In addition a complex stress state is set up which renders quantitative work impossible, e.g., on dislocation density and arrangement as a function of stress. To overcome these difficulties a "self-adjusting" upper compression plate is required. A simple and reliable method of achieving this is shown in Fig. 1: A steel hemisphere is placed on the specimen. As soon as the compression plate (which no longer needs precise machining) makes contact with this hemisphere the load is uniformly distributed over the whole specimen surface, and a homogeneous uniaxial state of stress results. An advantage of the method is that the loading is always central, even when the specimen surface is not parallel to the compression plate (Fig. 1, dashed line). Therefore to a first approximation a uniaxial state of stress is maintained if the misorientation of the specimen end surface is small. Two typical stress strain curves of identically prepared sodium chloride crystals are shown in Fig. 2; curve 1 was taken without and curve II with the hemisphere under otherwise identical conditions. The improvement in the accuracy of defining the beginning of elastic and plastic deformation is clearly indicated. INTRODUCTION The idea of water management and control at the Church Rock Mill operations began to take shape in February 1979. At that time, we were already investigating the feasibility of decreasing the fresh water requirements so that the solids would become the limiting factor in tailings impoundment utilization. The area for solution evaporation could be kept at a fraction of the normal requirements under the standard process of full water usage. The Church Rock Mill is an acid leach circuit followed by solids/liquid separation with thickeners in counter current decantation, and solvent extraction. Following the normal design of acid leach circuits, reuse of tailings solution was not incorporated in the original mill process design. INITIAL WATER CONTROL INVESTIGATIONS The investigations to decrease the fresh water requirements centered around modifying the grinding circuit from the present semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones, to open circuit grinding with a rod mill. The open circuit grinding with the SAG mill and rod mill in series had the potential of decreasing the water requirements for grinding and leach dilution by approximately 50% or 1.4 m3/min (300 gpm). The grinding pulp density would be maintained at 70 to 72% solids, and the leach dilution to 50% solids would be accomplished with acid tailings liquor recycle. In such a grinding circuit arrangement, the SAG mill would provide the primary or coarse grind, and the rod mill would be used for the fine grind. By the SAG mill and rod mill series grinding method of water control and other secondary water controls in various places downstream from the grinding circuit, the required necessary evaporation area was estimated at 120 acres of liquid surface. A second method of water control at grinding was investigated. A two-stage cyclone classification circuit appeared to have a good potential of achieving the same water reduction at a much lower capital and operating cost. However, in retrospect, this would not have been a viable method since a high slime recycle load would have been established hindering classification. The use of reagents to neutralize the acid tailings solution was not considered seriously at that time, since it would have materially increased operating costs, although it would have also allowed more tailings solution recycle and consequently, less fresh water usage. However, with the tailings solution deposition area available at that time, it was not then necessary to incur the high cost of neutralization. The control expected by the series grinding of semiautogenous and rod mills would have been sufficient to maintain a water consumption/evaporation equilibrium well in line with the available land area. IMPLEMENTATION OF NEUTRALIZATION OPERATIONS During the summer of 1979, the UNC Church Rock Mill experienced a tailings dam breach which resulted in a prolonged mill shutdown. Upon resumption of operations at the end of October 1979, tailings deposition was restricted to a small portion of the tailings impoundment area. Figure 1 shows the general tailings area and the limits of the present deposition area in the central part including the borrow pits. These borrow pits had been excavated to provide materials for tailings dam construction. Immediately after resumption of operations, it became evident that it would be necessary to control the quantity of liquid to be evaporated because of the small confined area available for tailings solution deposition and to maximize the deposition time in the tailings area. The water control required had to be exercised on a large scale, and to be in operation as quickly as possible. An obvious solution was to reuse the tailings liquor in mill process. Immediate steps were taken to install the necessary equipment for tailings neutralization on an interim basis. Anhydrous ammonia was selected as the primary neutralization reagent since it was the quickest system that could be placed in operation. Previous laboratory tests indicated fair results with ammonia neutralization. Such a system required a minimum of installed equipment and handling. INITIAL NEUTRALIZATION OPERATIONS Actual neutralization operations began on November 26, 1979. The raffinate solution which normally would have been discarded was pumped to a 3.7 m (12ft) diam by 4.3 m (14ft) tank for reagent contact, see Figure 2. At this tank, anhydrous ammonia was added directly from the tanker trailers and controlled at pH 7.0 nominally. Agitation was provided by air sparging. The neutralized product formed a highly viscous slurry in the grinding circuit which resulted in pumping and cyclone classification problems.

In an article in the General Electric Review, January, 1915, reference was made to the X-ray examination of a steel casting 9/16 in thick. Fig. 1 shows one of the radiographs thus obtained. All these radiographs showed plainly the tool marks on the surface of the casting. All but one showed peculiar markings the shape of which strongly suggested that they were indeed the pictures of holes in the interior. A circular piece, 1 in. in diameter, was punched from the casting at a point where the radiograph shown in Fig. 1 indicated that a blow-hole should be found. (Location of sample shown by circle in Fig. l.) Fig. 2 is a photograph of the end of the punching, showing the hole that was found. Since that article was written it has seemed desirable: (1) to obtain data from which the exposure necessary for any thickness of steel could be at once calculated; (2) to find the thickness of the smallest air inclusion which could be radiographed in a given thickness of steel; (3) to determine in what direction to hope for further progress; and (4) to develop the technique of radiographing metals. In order to gain some preliminary data, several pieces of 1/2-in. (12.5-mm.) boiler plate were obtained, 5 by 7 in. (12.5 by 17.5 cm.) in size. In one of these, holes were drilled in such a way that the axis of each hole was midway between the faces of the steel and parallel to those faces. S URFACE effects in the cleavage of brittle crystals have been known for some oftime,1, 2 but our knowledge of surface effects in the plastic deformation of crystals is of relatively recent origin. In 1936, Roscoe9 eported his observations comparing oxidized and clean cadmium crystals. He found that cadmium crystals 1/2 mm in diam when covered by an oxide film less than 1200 atoms thick had critical shear stresses about twice those for clean crystals. This effect is anomalous in that it cannot be caused by the inherent shear strength of a normal oxide film. Either an interaction between the film and the crystal causes the large increase in strength, or the oxide film has an abnormal mechanical strength. Several authors since Roscoe have studied surface effects in crystal plasticity. A complete review of the literature will not be presented, but most of the results may be summarized as follows: 1—The critical shear stress for slip is increased markedly by very thin oxide films on zinc4 and cadmium crystals;" &apos; also, the entire stress-strain curve is raised by an oxide coating;3,4 both effects increase with decreasing specimen radius. 2—Surface active substances such as oleic acid destroy the hardening effect of oxide films.4, 6-8 The time required for the reduction of the hardening effect to begin increases with the viscosity of the solvent4~ 3—There has been dispute in recent years about the effects of surface active substances themselves on plastic deformation. Rehbinder, Lichtmann, and Maslenikov9 state that surface active substances reduce the strength of metal monocrystals markedly and increase the number of slip lines per unit length at a given strain. The effect varies with orientation for tin crystals being smallest for x, = 0, largest for x, = 45", and intermediate as x, + 90°.10 Several workers claim to have disproved the results of Rehbinder&apos;)"." but Rehbinder and Lichtmann9 have defended themselves and Masing with his collaborators" has confirmed some of Rehbinder&apos;s results. 4—Immersion of metal specimens in electrolytes such as sodium chloride reduces their strength12,13&apos; and subsequent cathodic polarization increases the strength reduction. For noble metals, the strength reduction occurs for both anodic and cathodic polarization," increasing with increasing polarizing voltage. 5—Electroplated copper coatings effect the creep rates of zinc monocrystals. Poly crystals are not affected." 6—Immersion in dilute acid destroys the hardening effect of an hydroxide film. When an acid solution is applied to a steadily creeping crystal, the creep rate jumps to a very high value and then drops gradually to a steady value which is higher than the initial steady rate.*&apos; " If the hydroxide film to be removed is very thin (about 100A thick), the creep rate does not change measurably, but a small rapid strain-increment is observed when dilute acid is applied." 7—Crystal plasticity depends on specimen dimensions. This was observed by Lichtmann and Ven-stroml" for monocrystalline tin and by Andrade and Kennedy" for polycrystalline lead. 8—Immerson of copper crystals in mercury has no effect on their stress-strain curves.&apos;" 9—Bombardment of creeping cadmium crystals with a particles which penetrate the surface to only 0.005 mm may increase their creep rates as much as five times.&apos;&apos;&apos; The experiments which will be described in this paper pertain to: (a) the effect of a crystal&apos;s shape on its plastic deformation, and (b) the effect of metallic surface films on plastic deformation. For the work pertaining to (a), crystals of zinc, tin, and lead were grown which had various shapes. These were tested in simple tension. Macroscopic rotations about the tension axis which are unpredicted by the classical theory of slip were observed, and serrated edges were observed in tin crystals. For the work pertaining to (b), the effects of evaporated and electrodeposited films of copper, nickel, gold, and zinc on the mechanical properties of zinc, tin, and lead crystals were determined. The films influenced both slip and twinning of the crystals in creep and tensile tests. Experimental Details Chemically pure zinc, tin, and lead were used in this investigation. A necessary condition for a uniaxial stress distribution in compression testing is that the specimen end surfaces make full contact with the apparatus compression plates. In addition all compression surfaces must be machined perpendicularly to the loading axis. In general this condition is not sufficiently fulfilled in a simple apparatus. Therefore on application of the load the compression plate may first touch the specimen at one point only. This may cause crumbling of the specimen if the material under investigation is brittle (e.g., ionic crystals). It also precludes a precise study of the beginning of deformation as the effective cross sectional area is unknown. In addition a complex stress state is set up which renders quantitative work impossible, e.g., on dislocation density and arrangement as a function of stress. To overcome these difficulties a "self-adjusting" upper compression plate is required. A simple and reliable method of achieving this is shown in Fig. 1: A steel hemisphere is placed on the specimen. As soon as the compression plate (which no longer needs precise machining) makes contact with this hemisphere the load is uniformly distributed over the whole specimen surface, and a homogeneous uniaxial state of stress results. An advantage of the method is that the loading is always central, even when the specimen surface is not parallel to the compression plate (Fig. 1, dashed line). Therefore to a first approximation a uniaxial state of stress is maintained if the misorientation of the specimen end surface is small. Two typical stress strain curves of identically prepared sodium chloride crystals are shown in Fig. 2; curve 1 was taken without and curve II with the hemisphere under otherwise identical conditions. The improvement in the accuracy of defining the beginning of elastic and plastic deformation is clearly indicated. A Discussion of the paper by H. O. Hofman and M. G. Magnuson, read at the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904. (British Columbia Meeting, July, 1905.) T. KIRKE ROSE, London, Eng. (communication to the Secretary*`) :-The authors have shown that, under certain conditions, the rate of dissolution of gold by chlorine and bromine is re¬duced by the addition of 10 per cent. of silver to the gold, and that the action is almost stopped when the silver amounts to 30 or 40 per cent. of the alloy. Even if full recognition is given to the practical way in which the work was done, how¬ever, it is to be regretted that Prof. Hofman and Mr. Magnuson did not determine the temperature at which the experiments were carried out. From the details given it may be inferred that the temperature was raised by chemical action by about 20° C. when 21 g. of sulphuric acid were added, and that the mixture was then slowly cooled down during the experiment. When bromine or very weak chlorine solutions were used, there could not have been any perceptible heating action. As the action of both chlorine and bromine is aided by heat, it follows that the stronger solutions of chlorine were given an unfair advantage over the weaker solutions and over bromine. If the temperature had been the same in each case, I do not think that the conclusions given oil p. 432 of the Bi-Monthly Bulletin, March, 1905, 1 would have been found to be justified. (This is speaking generally. In barrel-treatment the conditions are similar to those in the experiments.) The superior speed of bromine as compared with chlorine at equivalent strengths is not yet disproved, and the differences noted between strong and weak solutions of chlorine may have been largely a function of the temperature. PuRe silver and silver-lead alloys have been studied as to their suitability for bearing~.&apos; A review of the properties of thallium and the silver-thallium constitutional diagram was made by the author to analyze the possibilities of silver-thallium compositions for antifriction materia1s. t The silver-rich end of the diagram as reported in the literatureg-" was found to be sketchy and it was necessary to carry out corisiderable experimental work to arrive at definite conclusions. Some of the results of this work are reported in this paper. Test Materials In the beginning of the work, only fused alloys were investigated. In preparing the fused alloyst care was taken to exhaust the toxic fumes caused by the thaillium content. The compositions of the series of fused alloys are listed in Table I. The silver-thallium alloys were melted in clay-graphite crucibles and cast into preheated steel molds of 3/4-in, diameter. In the cast condition, they showed a cored structure, as indicated by the micrographs of Figs. I to 3. The etching reagent used was a mixture of 2 grams K2Cr207, 8 C.C. H2S04, and IOO C.C. H20. The cored structure is unsatisfactory for the type of corrosion resistance required for bearing applications, and homogenizing experiments were carried out at various temperatures, the results of which are shown in Figs. 4 through 8. The alloys with a lower thallium concentration, which were heated for 2 hr. at 525°C show an almost completely homogenized solid solution type of structure. With higher thallium concentration, the homogenizing temperature was dropped to 475OC. to eliminate the formation of a liquid phase. It is evident that heating for 2 hr. at this temperature did not iesiilt iii complete elimination of the cored structure. As would be expected, cold-working of the cast structure is an expedient in establishing equilibrium conditions. The fine homogeneous grain structure shown in Fig. 7 corresponds to the cold-worked area under the Rockwell ball penetration when the hardness was taken before heat-treatment. A detailed structural study was made on a cast silver-thallium alloy containing 3.67 per cent thallium. Three micrographs (Figs. 9, 10 and 11) show the transition
