THERE are SO many conditions affecting blast-furnace results that it is hard to get satisfactory comparative data on the working of two furnaces, and much more difficult to get comparable results from the use of two entirely different fuels. The several advantages of charcoal over coke as a blast-furnace fuel have doubtless been apparent to many managers; but probably the conditions for comparative tests of the two were never so favorable as during the year 1905, at the works of the Algoma Steel Co., Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, which comprise two modern blast-furnaces, well equipped, though of comparatively small capacity. For four consecutive months one of these furnaces was run with charcoal and the other with coke. Then the charcoal-furnace ran for a while with part charcoal and part coke; and, still later, with coke only. The ore-mixtures were about the same in the two furnaces, and, of course, all the climatic conditions were identical. The dimensions of the two furnaces, and their work with the different fuels, are given in Table I.

HODGSON.-As to ".Safety First," I did not deal with that, but I will say that in 1913, the number of .men killed was nine, and that year the "safety first" program was commenced; the next year, 1914, the number was reduced to five. In 1915, I am pleased to say that the number was reduced to two in the Copper Queen's entire property, and we have none so far this year. THE CHAIRMAN (G. F. G. HERMAN, Bisbee, Ariz.).-I can say, further, that we have from eight to nineteen men per month incapacitated for more than 14 days. Those are classified in this State as serious accidents. The number of men injured has apparently increased, -but that is clue to our improved method of recording and classifying accidents, no matter how slight. C. W. CHICAGO in the last week of June fulfilled all its promises to the visiting engineers except one. This holds true with respect to the activities of the Regional Meeting of the A. I. M. E. in particular and of Engineers' Week in general. No one expected to find much of the beautiful in the outward aspects of the Fair-the Century of Progress Exposition, to be more formal; but they expected novelty, color, and startling lighting effects at night, and they were in no sense disappointed. It has been said that the architecture is a portent of the style of the buildings of the future; most who have seen the Fair hope that this forecast will prove inaccurate. As to the exhibits themselves, they are splendid. They are in keeping with the theme of the Exposition-a Century of Progress in science, in engineering, in the industries based upon them. No attempt will be made here even to suggest the exhibits that are most interesting. There are plenty for every one; and any member of the Institute who has the opportunity should by all means visit Chicago before the end of October.

A striated structure perpendicular to the growth axis was observed by the copper-decoration tech-nique in dislocation-free, .float-zoned silicon crystals. The striations, which were spaced about 100 p apart, fitted the relationship d = f/u , where d is the spacing, f is the growth rate, and u is the crystal rotation rate. Each stria was resolved into an UNDOPED silicon crystals pulled from quartz crucibles by the Czochralski technique usually exhibit a striated structure perpendicular to the growth axis.'-' This structure has been attributed to oxygen segregation, with the oxygen being introduced from the quartz crucible. If the crucible is rotated, the level of oxygen contamination has been reported as high as 10° atoms per cu cm.10 These striations are similar to solute striations commonly observed in doped Czochralski-grown crystals. The periodic nature of the striations is caused by a periodic variation in the growth rate",12 which is attributed mainly to thermal gradients in the melt.13 A finer striated structure14 attributed to constitutional supercooling is sometimes observed between the coarse striae. The oxygen striations have been observed by infrared transmission techniques,' by the copper-decoration technique,' by X-ray diffraction microscopy,6-8 and by 9 p absorption measurements3 on crystals pulled from the melt both with and without dislocations. In this investigation float-zoned dislocation-free crystals were examined by the copper-decoration technique. The level of oxygen for float-zone material is less than 1016 atoms per cu cm the lower limit of detection by 9 p absorption measurement. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The crystals were grown by the float-zone process with the rf heating coil outside of the quartz envelope containing the silicon. All float zoning was done under an atmosphere of purified helium. The Dash technique15 was used to grow the crystal dislocation-free. This involves growing the crystal initially with a diameter between 2 and 3 mm and at array of starlike precipitates of copper. The strucLure was not .found at the surface tor a depth of about 1.5 mm, or in a region of similar width ahead of a dislocation network. The structure is postulated to consist of vacancy clusterings or dislocation loops. very rapid rates, about 20 mm per min, for a distance of about 3 cm. The diameter of the crystal is then increased to the diameter of the source of silicon, which in this case was about 19 mm. Because of the arrangement of the apparatus, the zone was passed downward rather than upward, contrary to the standard float-zoning practice. Also, the source was rotated rather than the seed. ziegler17 has made dislocation-free crystals by a similar technique but has passed the zone upwards. The starting material was zone-refined and had a p-type resistivity of 150 ohm-cm. The major impurity was boron; the total impurity excluding the boron was reported by the supplier (Dow-Corning) to be typically less than 2 x 1013 atoms per cu cm. The crystals were examined by the Dash copper-decoration technique18'19—a method in which about 10" atoms per cu cm of copper are diffused at a temperature between 900" and 1000°C into silicon which is then quenched to room temperature. On quenching, the copper precipitates on crystalline defects which are then visible when viewed by transmission infrared microscopy. The photomicrographs shown were taken either of the infrared image tube screen or directly on infrared film. All sections prior to decorating were chemically polished and, for some sections, given a sirtlZ0 dislocation etch-pit examination. After decorating, the samples were mechanically polished. RESULTS A photomicrograph, taken in transmission of a decorated cross section, is shown in Fig. 1. The portion of the section shown is near the surface of the crystal. The entire cross section showed no dislocation etch pits after being given a Sirtl etch treatment. It is seen that the copper precipitated randomly. Each precipitate, as has been reported by others, was found to have a starlike structure.

ABOUT one hundred were in attendance when Donald M. Liddell opened the session* on non-ferrous metallurgy at 2 p. m. on Tuesday. F. F. Col- cord was vice-chairman. For the first part of the session the chair was turned over to Frank G. Breyer, who introduced G. L. Spencer, Jr., to read his contribution (T.P. 378), "High Silica Retorts at the Rose Lake Smelter," which was an account of the method of manufacture of high-silica zinc retorts at the Rose Lake smelter, and of the service given by these retorts. The materials used are, by volume, 50 per cent clay, 25 per cent silica flour and 25 per cent grog. Written discussion of the paper by E. M. Johnson, W. R. In- galls and M. M. Neale was read by Mr. Breyer. Mr. Johnson explained that their practice in manufacture differed very little from Rose Lake practice, but that their retorts did not last as long, possibly because Eagle-Picher does not use a hydraulic retort press or sintered ore. He ascribes the longer life of silica re- torts to the fact that they do not bend under heat. Mr. Ingalls pointed out that silica retorts are no better as heat conductors than clay retorts, but that they do have a superior rigidity in the furnace. Development work in mines of St. Joseph Lead Co., Southeast Missouri, using trackless loading equipment shows definite advantages: Speed of cleaning, ability to work on steep grades and sharp crosscuts, good later tracking conditions, and possibility of wasting rock in old abandoned stopes. THE Desloge mine is one of a group of mines owned by the St. Joseph Lead Co., in the so-called Lead Belt of Southeast Missouri. It has been operating approximately 40 years producing a daily tonnage ranging from 1600 to 3800, depending on various factors. On an average, the present mine is 300 ft deep with an extreme extent of 2.7 miles by 1.7 miles. Most of the present mining is in the lower horizons of the Bonne Terre dolomite, a fairly soft rock requiring no support except occasional channel iron and roof pins. Due to the contour of the underlying sandstone and porphyry, some development work has been through short stretches of these different formations. In some areas the lower part of the dolomite is quite sandy and generally is considered abrasive. Sizes and Methods of Drifting Have Changed: Development work has, like other phases of mining, changed considerably in the last 20 years, from cleaning by hand to the use of a mechanical method. The conception of a standard drift has also changed. Before the advent of mechanical loading in stopes there were many pieces of main line drift averaging 7 ft high x 9 ft wide. Some changes in drilling equipment have been made such as reducing the weight of column, clamp, air feed, and fittings to go with the HC10 Cleveland jackhamer. Other changes have been made in drill steel such as the use of detachable bits; throw-away variety, screw type, and the tungsten-carbide insert bits. Later developments have introduced spiral-welded pipe with victaulic couplings, millisecond exploders, bulky powder, and the use of electric cap lamps. Experimental work is going on continually in various phases of development work, some to be tried and discarded, others gradually to become standard practice. To sum up, the standard method of development now in use at Desloge is as follows: The work is done on a two-shift cycle 7:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Two men known as development drillers comprise a crew on each shift. These two men arrive at their work about 7:30 to find a round blasted by the previous shift. After scaling down back and walls they proceed to the cleaning operation, using either a Joy loader and shuttle car, a drag hoist mounted on a slide ramp, or an Eimco Finlay to load into a 21/2 ton mine car. Cleaning may take from 2 to 4 hr depending on conditions such as length of round broken, length of haul, and other variables. After fitting up pipe and setting up columns and drills they are ready to drill a round which should measure 9 ft high x 11 ft wide and break from 5 to 7 ft advance. Upon his return to England the following year, Cook's announcement of this uncharted island generated governmental interest, but its distance from the Island Empire, the troubles in the colonies, and the difficulties with France combined to keep English interest indirect and in the background of the then-current events.

The room-temperature Knoop hardness of single -crystal titanium diboride has been determined. Variations in microhardness have been correlated with orientation and structural imperfections in the crystals. Maximum differences in hardness values of 750 kg per sq mm with respect to orientation and 450 kg per sq mm with respect to substructure were found. The effects of etchants, load on indenter, and degvee of cracking of indentation were studied. The average hardness was determined as 2800 kg per sq mm on the as-grown crystals. Annealing increased the average hardness to 3375 kg per sq mm. ThE microhardness of polycrystalline titanium diboride approximating the stoichiometric composition TiB, has been studied by several investigators. The values for the Knoop hardness number range from 2710 kg per sq mm (Khn = 2710 kg per sq mm) to 3400 kg per sq mm.'-4 Samsonov et al.' reported a Vickers hardness number of 3400 kg per sq mm (Vhn = 3400 kg per sq mm) at 120-g loads for a 98 pct Ti + B material of 96 pct theoretical density. Recently Dunegan measured the Vickers hardness and obtained 2060 kg per sq mm with a 10-g load (Vhnlo = 2060 kg per sq mm), 1425 kg per sq mm for Vhnloo, and 1320 kg per sq mm for Vhnlooo. We have obtained a Khnloo = 3000 * 350 kg per sq mm for hot-pressed polycrystalline TiB2 that was 99.1 pct Ti + B and 96.6 pct of theoretical density. The present investigation has been made on single-crystal titanium diboride boules, and is believed to be the first such study on TiB, crystals of known orientation. EXPERIMENTAL The single crystals were prepared by a Verneuil-type process using an electric arc by the Linde Division of Union Carbide Corp. The largest specimens were 6 mm in diameter by 12 mm long. The crystals were of theoretical density (4.50 g per cm3) with a Ti + B content of 99.8 pct. The major impurities present were: 0.03 pct (by weight) 0, 0.06 pct C, 0.01 pct Si, 0.05 pct Fe, 0.01 pct Cr, and 0.01 pct Ni. The crystals were boron-rich, the average boron content being 31.S7 wt pct (stoichiometric value is 31.12 wt pct), and titanium-poor, the average titanium content being 68.2 wt pct (stoichiometric value is 68.88 wt pct). Titanium was determined gravimetrically by cupferron precipitation and boron by titration of H3B03 from a NaOH-fused specimen after removal of titanium with BaC03. The outer edge of the boule accounted for some of the excess boron. An electron-microprobe analysis showed that the titanium content increased from 60.0 wt pct at the edge to 68.5 wt pct at D, ~ 1000 p, where D, = distance from outer edge (see Fig. 5). X-ray measurements indicate that the boules are single crystals with considerable substructure. Upon etching this structure is seen in the form of a Widmanstatten-type rhombohedral line pattern in the basal (c) plane and a parallel "lines" pattern in the prism (a) planes. A typical WidmanstHtten-type pattern is seen in in Fig. 1. Electron microscopy reveals that the lines are less than 1 p across, which does not allow direct electron probe or microfocus X-ray determination of their composition. The identity of the second phase has not been established. It might be a higher boride or a nonstoichiometric TiB2. On annealing above 2200°C the precipitate is dispersed and dissolves in the matrix. The best etchants found were HF/HNO/HO, KF(CN)$NOH/HO (Murakami's Etch), and A large number of other etchants were previously Studied. The acidic etchant produced an acicular or "needles" pattern in the (a) planes which is an etchant effect on the "lines" pattern.

LARGEST of the known commercial deposits of pebble phosphate are those found in Polk County, Florida. The phosphate bed, commonly known as the matrix, will consistently average 6 to 9 ft. in depth, and is found under 3 to 60 ft. of over-burden. The phosphate pebbles, white and black in color, varying greatly in grade, are found imbedded in a matrix of sand and clay; and range in size from the fines to pebbles 1 1/2 in. in diameter, although the average coarse size is approximately 1/2 in. in diam¬eter. On some of the washers all material under 14 mesh is lost. High-grade phosphate (75 per cent plus of bone phosphate of lime, CasP2Oa) is generally soft, the pebbles breaking up during the mining operation and in pumping; low-grade phosphate, 67 to 69 B.P.L., is black in color with hard pebbles with no loss encountered in pumping.

THE reconnaissance of the Goldfield mining-district, described in this paper, was made in May and June, 1905, and, though this time was too short for a complete report, the work accomplished may serve as a basis for more thorough future research. Dr. Berkey has examined the rocks collected by myself, and I am using his classifications. As a result of further field-work, and Dr. Berkey's examination of the rocks, this paper is an elaboration and correction of my views expressed in the Gold-field Sun, May 12, 1905. The sketch-map, Fig. 1, illustrates the geology of the Goldfield mining-district. Goldfield is an eruptive complex, consisting of alaskite (binary granite), hornblende-andesite, hornblende-dacite, rhyolite, pyroxene-andesite, pyroxene-dacite (sometimes containing, a small quantity of olivine), quartz-felsite, olivine-pyroxene-ande¬site, and basalt. Considering this list to be arranged in the order of eruption, the age-sequence of the rocks conforms to Richthofen's law, formulated in 1868. From his observations in Europe and America, propylite, andesite, trachyte, rhyolite and basalt, occurring together, succeed one another. In a general way, the medium and more acidic rocks precede the most asic-a result supposed by some to have arisen from their relative position beneath the surface, and due to a rude stratification by gravity in the original cooling magma during the older history of the earth, or to the same differentiation occurring during a quiescent (molten ?) period preceding eruption, being aided by the ease with which acidic rocks, mixed with water vapors, become fusible. Pilot plant test work in 1942 and 1943 showed that by a combination of desliming, fine-size classification, and Sullivan deck concentration it is possible to recover heavy minerals such as cassiterite at least as fine as 10 microns in size. This appreciable improvement in gravity concentration practice has been substantiated by several full-sized plants.

SOVIET RUSSIA reserves must be stupendous. In 1937 I. M. Goubkin placed the reserves of all categories it approximately 48 billion barren which was about twenty billion horn Is in excel:, of all the oil produced in the world since 1857. It is not unlikely in fact it is probable, that these huge stores of petroleum may ultimately be proven to exist within the present boundaries of the U.S.S.R. The size of the country is almost beyond imagination it is 2.7 times as big as the United States. Great sedimentary basins exist in all its different geological provinces, much of which are entirely untested and barely prospected. Oil in commercial quantities is actually produced from formations in every period from the Devonian to the Pleistocene. In the Emba region alone, 300 salt domes are known with an estimate of 700 still to be found. Only 22 of the 300 have been drilled and all showed oil. Of the 22 domes drilled six are now producing. Within the State of Montana the streams rise in the high mountains at. an elevation of from 5,000 to 8,000 ft. These streams leave the State line both east and west at elevations from 3,500 to 2,400 ft. It is, therefore, apparent. that all these streams have an average fall of 3,000 ft. within the confines of the. State, and many opportunities are presented on all streams. for the development of power, by taking advantage of the natural fall. It is probable that 1,000,000 h. p. can :be developed in the State of Montana. I. NATURAL FEATURES OF STATE AFFECTING POWER DEVELOPMENT. The main. range of the Rocky mountains, forming the Continental Divide, cuts the State of Montana into two parts. The eastern part is drained by the Missouri river and its tributaries, the Madison; Jefferson, Gallatin and Yellowstone, rivers. The western part is drained by tributaries to the Columbia river, the Clarks fork and the Kootenai river. The Clarks fork in turn is formed by the junction of Missoula and Flathead rivers, the latter, draining Flathead lake. The western part of the State. is mountainous and the eastern part is comparatively level. As a natural result the rivers in the western part are capable of generating large amounts of power, while in the eastern part of the State natural power sites are much fewer and farther apart. It also follows that in the mountainous districts large amounts of power are required for the mining industry, while in the eastern part of the State, which is principally devoted to agriculture, power is required in smaller quantities. ?

There are well recognized procedures for determining the various tensile, fatigue, and other mechanical properties of the common structural materials. This makes it possible for engineers to design structures of various materials which have adequate initial strength to stand the stresses to which they are subjected in service. There is also considerable general information about protective measures suitable for protecting the usual structural materials from the effects of ordinary environments. However, often insufficient quantitative information is available on the combined effects of stress and corrosion to permit the designer satisfactorily to appraise the structure from the stress-corrosion standpoint. This situation is further complicated by the fact that the stresses causing stress¬corrosion failures are usually not the design stresses but rather the residual forming and assembly stresses which are generally of unknown magnitudes. Thus, tests which will rapidly evaluate the susceptibility of materials to stress-cor¬rosion failures are extremely useful. Of particular value are tests which can be applied to built-up structures as well as to simple specimens, since, as mentioned above, residual stresses often are caused by fabricating procedures and assembly operations.
