DURING the winter of 1946 to 1947 potash operations in Germany, France and Spain were visited by the author. The U. S. Department of Commerce, through its Field Intelligence Agency Technical, sponsored the inspection of German properties by representatives of the American Potash Industry. Vast deposits of potash salts occur in the above-mentioned countries, and the production and marketing of these salts are important in their respective economies. Germany An area of some ten thousand square miles of north central Germany is underlain by lenses of potash salts interbedded with greater thicknesses of sodium chloride or common salt. These salt measures are relict deposits from the evaporation of an arm of the Zechstein (Permian) Sea which formerly covered northern Europe. During the peak year of 1940, Germany produced salts containing 1,860,000 tons of K,O and, next to coal, potash is its most important mineral raw material. The German deposits are found in the synclinal areas flanking the Flechtingen, Hartz Mountain and Thuringian uplifts, and, to the north they lie beneath the plains of Hannover. The regional dip of the salt measures is to the north, hence, lenses of potash found at depths of 500 to 1000 m* in the Two general depositional provinces of potash concentrations are recognized: (1) the main basin, and (2) the subsidiary basin. Salt Stratigraphy: Five commercial potash zones or beds are recognized. The three beds present in the main basin are: The Stassfurt bed that occurs near the top of the older salt, and the Ronnenberg and Riedel beds in the younger salt occurring 200 to 300 m, respectively, above the Stassfurt bed. The Stassfurt bed is found over the entire main basin, while the Ronnenberg and Riedel are restricted to the Hannover area. Two potash beds occur in the Werra basin. These are the Thuringian, or lower bed and the Hessen or upper potash bed that occurs 60 m above. These beds lie 210 and 150 m, respectively, below the position of the Stassfurt bed, and are restricted to the Werra basin. The upper bed is 2.5 to 11.5 m in thickness, and the principal ores are hartsalz with varying thicknesses of carnallite. The lower bed averages 3 m in thickness, and contains hartsalz. The Pu-La alloy systenz has been studied by thertnal, tnzcrographic, and X-ray diffraction methods. It is churacterized by a liquid miscibility gap, a maximum solubility of about 20 ut. pct PM in y lanthunum and 19 at. pct PI* in 0 lanthanum, very little soluibility of lanthanum in the plulonium allotropes, and the absence of intermediate phases. THE existence of immiscible liquids in the Pu-La system has been reported by Schonfeld.1 A tentative phase diagram based on the results of thermal-analysis experiments has been constructed by Poole et a1 2 This diagram shows a liquid immiscibility loop with a monotectic at 77 at. pct La and 846°C. 7 lanthanum is shown to dissolve 20 at. pct Pu and to decompose by an inverse peritectic reaction (y La = L , + p La) at about 82 at, pct La and 833°C. The ß lanthanum solvus was not determined, but the thermal work indicated a maximum solubility of 16 at. pct Pu in ß lanthanum. The present investigation has defined the solubility limits of plutonium in y lanthanum and 0 lanthanum, and, with the exception of minor discrepancies, has verified the results of Poole et al. 1) EXPERIMENTAL The electrolytic plutonium melting stocks were better than 99.9 wt pct pure, the main impurities being 90 ppm Fe and 50 ppm W. The lanthanum melting stocks, supplied by Research Chemicals and the Cerium Metals Corp., were about 99 wt pct pure, the main impurity detected by our spectrochemical analysis being 2000 ppm Fe. The components for each alloy button (-5 g) were weighed on an analytical balance and were melted together in a conventional arc furnace. The vapor pressure of Cd in equilibrium with CdSb in the presence of excess Sb has been measured using the Knudsen effusion method over the temperature range 276° to 379°C. The free energy of formation of CdSb is given by AF° = -1.58 + 1.53 x l0-4 T, kcal per mole. The enthalpy and entropy are obtained from the temperature coefficient of the .free energy. CADMIUM and antimony have almost imperceptible mutual solid solubility but form a single stable intermediate phase, CdSb. This phase, according to Han-sen,l extends from about 49.5 at. pct to 50 at. pct Cd at 300°C and has the orthorhombic structure. The free energy of formation of CdSb can be calculated from the vapor pressure of Cd for compositions which contain less than 49 at. pct Cd. The appropriate reaction and formulae are given by Eqs. [I] and [2]- CdSb(s, ~ Cd(g)-, +Sb(s) [1] Since Sb is in its standard state, Af - N,,AF'-,, = NcdRT In a,, = NcdRT InP/PO [2] In Eq. [2], P, is the vapor pressure of Cd in equilibrium with the alloy, and Po is the vapor pressure in equilibrium with pure solid Cd. It is implicit in this calculation that the free energy only slightly changes within the narrow limits of the single phase field. Thus, the value obtained from the antimony-rich boundary is truly representative of the stoi-chiometric compound. The results reported herein are obtained from a mixture near the eutectic composition, i.e. 59 at. pct Sb. Only two previous investigations" of the free energy of formation of CdSb have been made. Both relied upon the electromotive force method, and measurements were made over relatively narrow temperature ranges which strongly influences the reliability of the values of AH and aS. EXPERIMENTAL The eutectic composition is prepared by fusing reagent grade Cd and Sb by induction heating in vacuo with the starting materials held in a graphite crucible having a threaded lid. The material obtained from the initial melt is pulverized, sealed under high vacuum in a pyrex capsule, and annealed at 420°C for two weeks. X-ray analysis"gives the following lattize parameters: a = 6.436A, b = 8.230& and c = 8.498A using Cu Ka radiation with A = 1.54056. These values are in fair agreement with the result? previously reported by Al~in:4 i.e. a = 6.471A, b = 8.253A, and c = 8.526A. Vapor pressures are measured using an apparatus which has been described elsewhere,= however, with a single important modification. Knudsen effusion cells are made of pyrex with knife-edged orifices made by grinding the convex surface of the lid on #600 emery paper. Photographs taken at known magnifications using a Leitz metallograph enable the determination of the orifice area. Numerous calibration measurements of the vapor pressure of pure Cd give close agreement with values previously reported5,= thus indicating that no significant error can be ascribed to the substitution of glass cells for metal cells used in previous work. Because the vapor pressure of Cd is reliably established and because it is difficult to obtain Clausing factors for the glass cells, the final values used for the orifice areas are calculated from the calibration measurements of the vapor pressure of pure Cd. Effusion runs are started in an atmosphere of purified helium which is quickly evacuated as soon as the cell attains thermal equilibrium. Less than one minute is necessary to obtain high vacuum after evacuation begins, and the temperature seldom varies by more than 0.5oC from the value obtained prior to pumping out the helium. RESULTS The results of this investigation along with other pertinent data are tabulated in Table I. Fig. 2 is the familiar graph of log P against T-10 K. At least mean squares analysis of the data presented in Table I yields the following equation: log1DJP = 8.790 - 6472 x T"1 [3] The deviations of the individual measurements from the values calculated with Eq. 131 are given in column six of Table I; the average deviation is 4.0% of the calculated value. Although the partial molal properties change significantly with composition within the single phase region, the integral thermodynamic value should remain relatively constant. Hence the results of the following calculations, which use the data obtained for the eutectic composition, are probably representative of the equi-atomic compound. Eq. MUCH has been said and written of the "Big Inch," of the terrific obstacles encountered in its construction, of the colorful and tough men engaged in its building, but little has been publicized of the engineering and economic problems behind the scenes. Long before Pearl Harbor it was apparent to the petroleum industry that a critical oil shortage could be expected along the Atlantic seaboard, owing to delay in tanker deliveries as a result of convoy movements, and to allocation of vessels for foreign shipments. This area, with a normal consumption of approximately 1,800,000 barrels per day of oil and products, was almost entirely supplied by tanker. Pipe lines supplied an average of only 20,000 barrels per day in 1939, 40,300 barrels per day in 1940, and 55,000 barrels per day in 1941. A small amount of oil and products was also delivered via barge.

Present-day interest in the question of "dirty steel" has arisen primarily from the increasingly rigid specifications on various grades of steel and from the growing conviction that non-metallic inclusions are the source of many of the difficulties in meeting these specifications. The importance of inclusions has unquestionably been over-emphasized in many cases, but on the other hand many unpublished instances could be recorded where all evidence pointed to inclusions as the primary cause for the failure of steel in rolling or in service. The solution of the problem of dirty steel is not a matter of a few years. There are almost numberless types of inclusions. They segregate in steel ingots in an entirely different manner from other impurities, and, at best, only a start has been made in developing correct analytical methods for their determination. Most of the writers in the field have expressed opinions rather than given facts, and so many variables enter into the manufacture of steel that a study of plant conditions is difficult unless definite facts on certain phases of the inclusion problem are available. This statement is not intended to convey the idea that little work has been done on this problem. On the other hand, the number of investigations has been large, but in most cases too many variables have been present to allow definite conclusions to be drawn. In the body of the text, reference to previous investigations is made at suitable points. Rather than burden the reader with a lengthy review of the literature on the general subject of inclusions, reference to the particular works pertinent to the subject matter of the bulletin has been discussed. At the AIME meeting in Tampa in Oct. 1966, an empirically developed equation was presented which allowed the calculation of free settling velocity for any sized particle: 1 [ ] This equation requires the use of two parameters a and p which are coefficients derived from boundary layer theory.2 It was possible to develop values of a and p for several minerals by back calculation of published data. The original equation had one major flaw. When the fluid density exceeds the density of the solids, the solution to the equation becomes imaginary. A flaw was indicated also by the fact that galena and sylvite both having cubic cleavage, did not have similar values for a and b. Galena gave calculated values of a = 1.082 and g = 3.11, while sylvite gave values of a = 1.870 and p = 2.56. These flaws prompted further study of the equation, resulting in the following empirical modification: [ ] It is obvious a real solution of the equation is possible for all values of ps and p. When PL > PS, V is negative, indicating that the particles will rise against the attraction of gravity. The validity of the modification is borne out by the fact that when values of a and p were back calculated for galena and sylvite using the modified equation, both minerals gave values of a = 1.038 and p = 3.01. FOR over fifty years the Spanish mine, 21 miles northeast of Nevada City, in Nevada County, California, has been one of the Bradley properties. Between 1883 and 1889 it was operated by the late Frederick W. Bradley and P. R. Bradley. The ore averaged only about $1 a ton at that time but the mine was credited with a production of about $900,000 in that period. The property was then closed down until 1922, when the Bradley interests reopened it and continued development for the next nine years, when a 50-ton mill was built. This began operation in April, 1931. This was a selective flotation plant, with the tailing treated on Wilfley tables, and operated on ore from the No. 4 and No. 16 tunnel stopes. This ran from $3 to $6 in gold, 2 to 3 oz. of silver, copper 0.6 per cent, lead 1.5,

The DOE-funded (Contract No. DE-ACO3-77ET13108) Gulf Research & Development Co. (GR&DC) field tests of underground coal gasification in steeply dipping beds (UCG/SDB) were conducted in the North Knobs area, located 12.8 km (8 miles) west of Rawlins, WY. The site has a gently rolling, sparsely vegetated, semidesert terrain on the transition zone between a broad, flat basin (Great Divide Basin) to the west and the subdued mountains of the Rawlins uplift to the east. A comprehensive geotechnical program (Ahner et al., 1980) was essential to successfully complete the test program. Emphasis of the program was the subsurface characterization of the site and consisted of mapping, drilling and logging, core analyses, and hydrologic tests. The samples of lithologic units over- and underlying the G coal seam were tested in the laboratory for their modulus and strength. This program provided the required data necessary for designing surface facilities, input for permits, and ensuring correct placement of the process modules. The two UCG tests at the Rawlins site were conducted in the nominally 6.7 m (22 ft) thick G coal seam (rank-subbituminous B), dipping at 63°.

RECENT work by J. Darby, Jr. in this laboratory has shown that the reported vanadium-rich limit of the s phase in the Co-V system at 1200°C is in error. The appearance of a second phase in s actually is restricted to alloys containing over 68 atomic pct V. The error in the original value is due apparently to a reaction that takes place along the numerous cracks in the s specimens between the alloy and the impurities present in the He + 8 pct H atmosphere in the annealing furnace. Such a reaction and the consequent appearance of a second phase can be suppressed if the alloys are sealed under vacuum in Vycor tubing. The new value of 68 atomic pct V for the vana-dium-rich limit of the s phase in the Co-V system effects slightly the s compositions calculated from average values of N, and N,. for various s phases. The standard deviation between experimental mean compositions and those calculated from the assumption that s is characterized by a constant number of 3d + 4s electrons per atom (N,), is slightly reduced from 9.1 to 8.8 pct. The maximum divergence for the V-Mn s phase is reduced from 15.5 to 14 atomic pct. The standard deviation calculated from constant electron vacancy numbers given by N.. = 4.66 (Mo + Cr + V) + 3.2 (Mn) + 2.2(Fe) + 1.71(Co) + 1.6(Ni) is now greatly reduced, as the maximum divergence for this correlation previously occurred in the V-Co system. This maximum divergence is reduced from 7.6 to 2.3 pct, and the standard deviation for all s- phases is reduced from 4.1 to only 2.9 pct. The correlation for electron vacancy numbers given by N. 5.66 (V when with Ni or Co) + 4.88 (V when with Mn or Fe) + 4.66 (Cr + Mn) + 3.3 (Mn) + 2.66 (Fe) + 1.71 (Co) + 0.61 (Ni) is made slightly worse, and the standard deviation increases from 2.8 to 3.9 pct. These changes, however, do not affect the conclusions of the paper.' The deviation between calculated and experimental s compositions is much less for either one of the electron vacancy correlations than for the correlation with the number of 3d + 4s electrons.

All binary and a number of ternary u alloys formed by first long period transition elements were examined and found to be ferromagnetic at low temperatures. The Curie temperatures for these alloys were measured. It was found that the correlation of the Curie temperature with composition may be described qualitatively in terms of the contributions of the various component atomic moments to the saturation moment of the alloy. Ternary Fe-Cr-Mo u phase alloys were also found to be ferromagnetic, with a Curie temperature dependent on the iron content and largely independent of the unit cell dimensions. Similar relations were found for the Co-Fe-Cr and the Co-Cr-Mo a alloys, where the Co + Fe content appears to determine the Curie temperature. RECENTLY, it has become increasingly evident that the u phase is some kind of an "electron compound." Several papers1-' discussed the empirical correlation between the composition of the various u phases in alloys of the transition elements and the distribution of electrons in the partially filled d-levels of the component atoms. However, a picture of the latter can be formed only in a more or less intuitive manner, as in the Pauling theory," and the rigorous treatment of these problems is at present prevented by lack of adequate knowledge of the electronic structure of the transition elements in the metallic state. It appeared reasonable to expect that investigation of the magnetic properties, which are related to d-shell electrons, may help in clarifying the physical nature of the foregoing empirical correlation. Qualitative tests of samples of various compositions have shown that certain u alloys become ferromagnetic at liquid nitrogen temperature." The present investigation was undertaken to determine whether or not low temperature ferromagnetism is characteristic of a large variety of u alloys and to establish how the Curie temperatures of ferromagnetic u alloys are influenced by changes in composition and in lattice parameter. In the first portion of the in- vestigation, Curie temperatures were measured for a series of u alloys containing either vanadium or chromium with one or two of the elements manganese, iron, cobalt, or nickel. In the second phase of the work, data were obtained on the Curie temperature of ternary (Fe, Co, Cr)a, (Fe, Cr, Mo)a, and (Co, Cr, MO)U alloys, as a function of composition and of interatomic spacing. Experimental Procedures High frequency vacuum melting in high purity re-crystallized alumina crucibles was employed in the preparation of the u alloys, using metals whose lot analyses are given in Table I. Approximately two-thirds of the alloys were analyzed chemically, the analytical results being in acceptable agreement with the intended compositions, as seen in Tables I1 and 111. The specimens were annealed for homogen-ization in an atmosphere of purified 92 pct He and 8 pct H, mixture or in evacuated and sealed Vycor tubes at temperatures from 780" to 1300°C, depending on the temperature range of the u phase field for the particular composition. The annealing temwerature and time for kach alloy are given in Tables 11 and 111. Curie points were determined by an induction method; the change with temperature of mutual inductance between two coils was observed when the i-u specimen was inserted into the flux path between the coils. The transformer consisted of three coils each containing 1200 turns of 0.0050 in. diam enameled copper wire. The center coil, P in Fig. 1, served as the primary coil, and was linked magnetically with each of the two secondary coils, S, and S? which were connected in series opposition. Four coals were treated in the Humphreys spiral concentrator, and the products were examined by float-and-sink and screen-sizing tests to determine fundamental performance characteristics. The efficiency of the separation between coal and impurity was shown to be influenced greatly by particle size.

TO present some idea of the magnitude of the gold-mining industry of Canada and the world, the records of 106 gold-mining companies currently paying dividends have been studied. Forty of these are in Canada, and 37 on the Rand in South Africa, these being all the straight gold-mining companies that paid dividends in the two areas in 1938. DESPITE the tremendous drop in the volume of domestic production of metals, their prices, and profits, the world as a whole has managed to produce and consume nearly as much as in 1937. Measured by production, 1937 was the record year for copper, lead, and zinc. The Copper Institute figures for 1938 (estimating December as equal to November) show that although apparent domestic consumption declined 309,422 tons, foreign consumption increased 133.035 tons. The total for 1938 was 1,971,790 tons compared with 2,148,177 tons for 1937. The domestic decline was 38.5 per cent, the foreign increase 9.9 per cent, and the total decline 8.2 per cent.
