As predicted, during 1937 South Louisiana witnessed one of the most active drilling campaigns in the history of the area, resulting in the discovery .of 14 new fields. The economic importance of 10,000-ft. production was far-reaching and the objective depths placed on some wildcats was 12,000 feet. Most of the important discoveries and deep tests were in the delta area between the Atchafalaya and Mississippi Rivers, where the upper Miocene sands were found productive between 10,000 and 11,000 ft. The casing program on these wells usually called for a protection string of 95/8-in. casing at approximately 9500 ft. Drilling barges with the heaviest equipment were used where water transportation was available. The oil production for South Louisiana during 1937 was 62,147,690 bbl., as compared with 51,968,727 bbl. during 1936, an increase of 19.5 per cent. There were 281 oil and gas wells and 172 dry holes completed during 1937 as compared with 262 oil and gas wells and 135 dry holes during the previous period. New Fields Gibson.—The first discovery for the year was in the Gibson area, where Shell Petroleum Corporation's Realty Operators No. 1, sec. 18, 17 S., 15 E., Terrebonne Parish, was completed flowing 780 bbl. of 38° A.P.I. oil daily through a 14/64-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 1700 lb. Production is from upper Miocene sand found from 9461 to 9483 feet. Abbevil1e.—The discovery well for the Abbeville field was Continental Oil Company's Hebert No. 1, sec. 20, 12 S., 3 E., Vermilion Parish, completed flowing 50 bbl. of distillate and 2 million cubic feet of gas through a 3/16-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 2550 lb. The well was plugged back from 12,216 ft. in the Chickisawhay, and is producing through perforations from upper Miocene sand found from 7668 to 7682 ft. Later in the year, the same operators completed Brookshire No. 1, sec. 66, 12 S., 3 E., flowing 366 bbl. of 42° A.P.I. oil per day through a 3/16-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 1800 lb. Heats of formation of Au-Zn alloys of compositions Au3Zn and AuZn were rneasured at several temperatures by liquid tin solution calorimetry. The data for Au3Zn show that much smaller heat and entropy effects are associated with the a2- a1 transformation than for the a1 - a transformation. This result is consistent with reported X-ray diffraction studies which indicate that the a1 and (a2 phases have ordered structures which only slightly differ, whereas the a phase is disordered. The heat of formation of AuZn(ß') does not change significantly between 322o and 8000 K, confirming that the ß' alloy remains highly ordered to high temperatures. Not many measurements have been made of the energies of order-disorder transformations in alloy phases. In many cases these energies may be conveniently determined by measuring heats of formation as a function of temperature. Many alloy phases approximately obey Kopp's law of additivity of heat capacities; as a consequence their heats of formation do not change with temperature. In ordered alloys, however, a decrease in degree of order with increasing temperature will contribute an endothermic component to the heat of formation. Thus, for ordered phases where other anomalous contributions to heat capacity in the alloy or its pure components are absent, a measured change in the heat of formation may be attributed to the energy of disordering. A portion of the Au-Zn phase diagram1" is shown in Fig. 1. The composition AuZn(ß') has a well-ordered superlattice structure of the CsCl type at room temperature. The alloy is considered to remain ordered to its melting point,1 although, from X-ray diffraction data and electromotive force measurements of zinc activities, Terpilowski3 concluded that considerable disordering began at -673°K. The Au3Zn composition is a disordered fee solid solution (a) at high temperatures. Between 693o and 543oK, the ailoy orders to form the a1 phase, having a structure based on the L12(AuCu3) type, but with a regular distribution of ordering faults in the c direction, making it tetragonal. Below 543oK, the alloy orders further by means of slight atomic shifts, without diffusion, yielding a complex long-period orthorhom-bic superlattice structure, a2.4-7 Heats of formation of Au3Zn(a2) and AuZn(ß') were measured at 363°K by Biltz et al.8 by aqueous solution calorimetry. Heat capacities of several alloys between 14.9 and 38.4 at. pet Zn in the range from 373" to 723°K were measured by Iwasaki ef al.6 Stoichiometric Au3Zn, however, was not included in the alloys measured, the nearest composition being 26.1 at, pet Zn. Also, the heating rate used for the measurements, 2 deg per min, may not have permitted equilibrium to be reached in the neighborhood of the transformations. Heat contents of solid and liquid AuZn were measured between 488o and 1138°K by Kubaschewski.9 It was decided to determine the ordering energies of Au3Zn and to check on the possible disordering of AuZn by measuring the heats of formation of these alloys at several temperatures. The present paper reports measurements by liquid tin solution calorimetry of the heats of formation of the three phases of Au3Zn at temperatures within their regions of stability, and of AuZn at a low (322°K) and a high (800°K) temperature. EXPERIMENTAL Alloy Preparation and X-Ray Examination. Ten-gram ingots of Au3Zn and AuZn were prepared by melting weighed amounts of gold (99.95 pct Au) and zinc (99.99 pet Zn) together in sealed evacuated Vycor tubes at 1060°K, followed by rapid quenching. The resulting ingots were homogenized at 900°K for 10 days. The Au3Zn alloy lost no weight in preparation, the loss from the AuZn alloy was enough to introduce an uncertainty of only 0.1 at. pet in its composition. Filings for X-ray examination were taken from various parts of each ingot and strain-annealed at 723°K for 20 min in vacuo. The Au3Zn filings were quenched rapidly to retain the disordered phase. Diffraction patterns were determined with an X-ray dif-fractometer using copper Ka radiation.

ON Sept. 24, 1875, a remarkable deposit of silver ore was discovered by James Ryan and Samuel Hawkes at the east base of Grampian Hill in central Beaver County, Utah.. A shaft was begun and had been sunk about 30 ft. in ore when the claim was sold on Feb. 17, 1876, to A. G. Campbell, Matthew Cullen, Dennis Ryan, and A. Byram for $25,000. To them is due the credit of having developed the mine and started the district on the road to its present state of prosperity. Their development resulted in proving the vein to a depth of over 280 ft. and about 2500 tons of ore was extracted and turned into bullion. In February, 1879, the mine came into the possession of the Horn Silver Mining Co., and since then over $65,000,000 worth of ore has been taken from the mine. Two smelters were built in 1878, near the mine; 400 men were employed underground, and 1000 on the surface, burning charcoal, hauling wood from the surrounding hills, and freighting and hauling hay for the hundreds of horses used in the work. THIS is a metallurgical war. More than ever before, the mechanized forces and the air-borne warfare are deciding campaigns. Both of these are primarily dependent upon metals. There are two ways of increasing the effective supply of these metals when the demand is greater than the total over-all supply. The American custom, when a shortage of anything develops, is to get more. In the case of some nonferrous metals this has been done. For example, our potential peak output of magnesium will be almost one hundred times the prewar production. Output of aluminun has also been tremendously increased, and production of other metals is being stimulated by every possible means. Our enemies, however, have another successful method of increasing the effective supply of a material, and that is, to eliminate entirely all nonessential uses, and also to use, in essential applications, alternate materials wherever possible. Sometimes, ersatz material is inferior to the original, and consequently does not do the job as well. Often, however, it has been found superior, and many substitute items are now being used both by industry and by the military which will continue even when the original material again becomes available.

THE relation of annealing temperature to conductivity of copper wire has been determined.1 Conductivity hard was 98.26 per cent. After a 10-min. heating at 200° C. it was 98.69. By annealing 10 min. at 300° C. a large increase, to 100.93, occurred. Maximum conductivity, 101.15, was attained after a 500° C. anneal; thereafter it decreased to 100.53 after a 950° C. anneal. If copper is gassed the decrease is much more than this. MATERIAL AND METHOD The work was done on high grade electrolytic copper, 99.942 per cent. copper-plus silver, silver 0.0008 per cent. It was hot-rolled to 3 in., then cold drawn to 0.080 in. The wire was cut into 25 5-ft. lengths and numbered 1 to 25 as cut. Four samples were tested hard. The others were wound into 5-in. diameter coils. For the 100° C. heating a coil was put into water, the water brought to boiling, and the wire kept at this temperature for 10 min. For the higher temperatures the coils were placed in envelopes of sheet copper, a little water added, and the envelopes sealed by folding over the edges twice, and hammering them together. This kept the air out very well. The envelope and wire were brought to the desired temperature; this was maintained for 10 min., then the whole was water-quenched.

[Secretary's Note.—The following official tables, prepared by the government of the State of Nuevo Leon, and presented to the Institute at the fifth seseion of its Mexican meeting, held at Monterrey, November 26, 1901, present in compact form a general summary of the mineral and metallurgical industry of the State for the preceding calendar year, together with a statement of the railway-shipments of ores from January 1 to October 31, 1901, which, in the absence of direct official mining and metallurgical statistics (not yet available for that year), clearly indicates an increased activity and productiveness of these industries. In other words, the mines are reported to have yielded in 1900 a total product of 83,960,169 kilos of ore; whereas, the railway is reported to have carried, in 10 months of 1901, a total of 108,318,647 kilos of ore. At this rate, the railway-shipments for 1901 mould amount to nearly 130,000,000 kilos. It is, of course, possible that the railwaystatistics include other freight than ores, or that they include duplications, such as would be involved in the record, first of certain ores transported, and afterwards of the " base bullion " produced therefrom. An accurate comparison is therefore impossible ; yet, after making all reasonable allowances for such items as have been named, it seems safe to infer that the mining and metallurgical industry of this State accomplished in 1901 a substantial progress.]

The strength of hard drawn copper wire is a question of considerable importance to both manufacturer and consumer. Unlike steel and alloy wires, in which strength is governed by both chcniical and physical considerations, t,he high conductivity required for copper wire in the clcc-trical industry generally precludes the possibility of obt,aining tensile strength through the use of alloys. Consequently, this strenglh is largely a rnatter of the ~hysical structure, and all factors known to affect this structure, such as rolling temperature, die contours, lubricants, drawing speeds, etc., arc matters of prime importance. The experiments described here have becn carried out dl~ring the past year at the Baltimore plant of the American Smelting & Refining Co., in connection with a general investigat,ion of sorne of the questions mentioned above, with the object of studying thc physical ~t~ructure of hard drawn copper wire and the influence of ccrtain factors on t,hat st'ruct.ure. The work has been of an exploratory nature, rather than con~prehensivc., but it was thought that the result,s might prove of sr~fficient general interest tjo warrant their publicatlion. The bulk of the hard drawn coppcr wire used in places where strength is an important factor is rnanufacturcd to strict specification, based USU-ally in the United States on thab of t,he Arrlerican Society for Tcst'ing Materials (B-1-23). This specification calls for almost as high a, valuc of t,ensilc strength, consistent with elongation, as it is possible pract'icnlly to obtain, and only physically perfect mlaterial can be relied on to lliect such a specification. Obvious defects, such as laminat'ions protluc:etl through fins in bhe original rods or brittleness duo lo ovt~rdrawing, arc. usually recognized and need only passing refercncc. Laminatlions can be detected by twisting and untwisting the wircx several times; they will show up on the surface in the form of fins. Pig. 1 shows a very bad example of this defect. Thc wire may bc perfectly smooth before twisting hut, when such larrlinations arc3 prcstmt they will readily show up under this treatrncnt. This trouble is caliscd by sirriilar defects in the original rod produced by overfills in rolling. Fig. 2 shows the cross-section of the rod from which thc wire in Fig. 1 was drawn.

Measurements of the heat effects on addition of various solid phases of InSb to a solution calorimeter have confirmed the existence of a new high-pressure plzase InSbQII), which was jormed at 37 kbar and 623°K. The heats of formation of InSbQ), InSbfl), and InSb(111) have been measured and the heats of transjormation of InSb(1) to InSb(1l) and InSb(Iii) and of 'InSb(ll) to InSb(iiI) at atmospheric pressure and 78°K have been determined independently. Other thermodynamic properties of these phases, the phase boundary InSb(i)/InSb(ll), and the relative positions of the triple points are calculated. The pressure-Dolume term is shown to be more critical than the internal energy difference in making the phase InSbQ) less stable than InSb(II) at high pressures. Observations on partially transformed specimens suggest that the transformation of' metastable InSb (III) takes place in the two steps InSb(lll) — InSbQI) and InSbQI) — InSb(l). The compound InSb can exist as several phases depending on the temperature and pressure. The phase InSb(I), which is a semiconductor having the zinc-blende structure, transforms into the phase InSb(11) at a pressure of about 23 kbar and room temperature.'-3 The phase InSb(II) has the 6 tin structure,4-6 is metallic, and becomes a superconductor below 2.lok7 An orthorhombic phase of InSb has been reported to occur above a pressure of approximately 30 kbar at room temperature.' This phase is also a superconductor below about 3.4k9 The phase InSb(I1) is retained at atmospheric pressure if it is quenched to 78°K under pressure,6,7 but tends to transform at higher temperatures and does so explosively above approximately 210ok,7 A value of the heat of transformation of InSb(1) to InSb(II) at 210°K and atmospheric pressure has been reported.' A concurrent publication'0 reports evidence for a new solid phase InSb(III), which was formed by annealing InSb above 58 1°K at 37 kbar, above 560°K at 52 kbar, and above 473°K at 65 kbar. Specimens of InSb(II1) had a superconducting transition temperature of 4.lo ± 0.1oK. X-ray diffraction patterns also indicated the presence of a new phase. In this communication, thermodynamic properties of the phases InSb(I), InSb(II), and InSb(II1) are reported and discussed. The phase boundary InSb(I)/InSb(II) and the relative positions of the triple points are calculated. 1) EXPERIMENTAL 1.1) Preparation of Specimens. Specimens of the high-pressure phases of InSb were prepared in a belt-type high-pressure chamber by a tichnique described in detail elsewhere.'' Charges of 0.6 to 0.8 g of Cominco semiconductor grade InSb were used. The temperatures were measured with a chromel-alumel thermocouple, the hot junction of which was within 0.5 mm of the specimen. The specimens were heated under a pressure of 37 kbar for 1 hr at 723°K (which is well above the liquidus) and quenched to room temperature. One set was annealed at 523°K and another set at 623°K for 20 to 24 hr. These annealing temperatures were chosen because 523°K was below and 623°K was above the temperature of the transformation of InSb(II) to InSb(1Tl) at 37 kbar.10 The specimens were then cooled to 125°K by passing liquid nitrogen through the jacket of the belt die before the

The area covered by this paper is the same as that covered in 1944. Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming are included in the discussion and statistics, and brief mention is made of activities in the adjoining states, except Nebraska and New Mexico, which are considered separately (see pp. 187-189). The other adjoining states, North and South Dakota, Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho, have had virtually no oil or gas production, except in the gas field of Cedar Creek. Montana, which extends into North Dakota; the Pierre field in South Dakota, where gas is produced and separated in gas-water wells, and the abandoned Payette area in western Idaho. Seven gas wells were drilled in North Dakota, but no wildcatting was reported. Several unsuccessful wildcats were drilled in South Dakota, and some were continuing at the end of the year. Activity in Idaho and Nevada was negligible.

ALTHOUGH the iron-carbon diagram has undergone many changes in the last 20 years, the region below the eutectoid line and up to approxi-mately 1.7 per cent carbon has been little affected. This region is generally considered to consist of cementite and ferrite. Graphite has been noted occasionally in the hypereutectoid steel region, and the ready formation of graphite nodules in malleable cast iron is a phenomenon difficult to interpret in the light of cementite, supposedly stable at sub-eutectoid temperatures. In this case the graphite formation has been partly explained by the presence of silicon, and many have believed that silicon acts to change the stable state rather than to accelerate reactions so as to arrive at the stable state in a briefer period of time. Consider-ation of this phenomenon indicates that cementite is not the stable phase in the temperature composition zone referred to. In the course of examining a low-carbon steel tube taken from a petroleum cracking still, which had been in service for approximately three years at temperatures somewhat below the eutectoid temperature, observations were made that shed light on this entire subject. The tube in question analyzed:1 C, 0.15 per cent; Mn, 0.49; Si, 0.02; S, 0.023; P, 0.015. The microstructure of the tube after service is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. From these it is evident that cementite as such is absent, and that in its place nodular graphite has been formed. In order to check this observation further, samples taken from the tube were heated at 850° C. for varying periods of time. This paper is a record of the first of a series of tests on sulfide minerals to be made by the metallurgical department f the University of California. The purpose of the tests here recorded is to determine the action of standard oils, oil mixtures, and addition agents on the flotation of pyrites. The question of the commercial value of pyrite was not considered. Of the many factors affecting flotation, only two-the oil and the other agent used-were made variable. PRODUCTION of crude it in the United States during 1939 totaled about 1.255,776,000 barrels, an average of 3,440,482 barrels per day, 3.41 per cent above the 1938 output of 1,214,355,000 barrels but 1.83 per cent below the record pro¬duction of 1,279,160,000 barrels, in 1937. However only the two-week shutdown of oil fields in the Southwestern States in August and September prevented the domestic crude production from establishing an all-time record in 1939. Demand for all petroleum products for the first ten months of 1939 showed an increase of 7.04 per cent over the similar period of 1938. Domestic demand for all petroleum products was particularly benefited by the increasing industrial activity, advancing 8.37 per cent above the like period of the preceding year equivalent to a volume increment of 256,810 barrels per day; with motor-fuel demand gaining 5.83 per cent and demand for all fuel oils gaining 12.15 per cent over the corresponding period of 1938. The export demand for the first ten months of 1939 was slightly below the export movements during the same period of 1938, declining 0.56 per cent. The European war was a major factor in 1939 for the petroleum industry in the United States, even if, at the end of the year, the war had not yet resulted in the expected large shipments to England and France.

New discoveries of gas in the southern counties featured the petroleum industry in West Virginia during 194;. Drilling for oil increased slightly over 1944 and a small increase of initial production resulted. Out of 28 wildcats drilled, there were 16 gas discoveries and 12 dry holes. No commercial oil was found in the 28 wells.

WAR necessities have spurred inventive genius in many fields. A grinding mill without any moving grinding parts stirs the imagination. Among the new and striking accomplishments in the heterogeneous group of nonmetallic industrial minerals is the use of an electric arc to speed up manyfold the difficult and delicate task of drilling a microscopic hole in a diamond, the hardest of all known substances. Outstanding in the field of optical research is the ability that man has developed to improve upon nature by making in the laboratory optical crystals many times larger than those usually found in rocky crevices. These are merely samples of numerous events and circumstances of noteworthy import, many of which are recorded in this review. Termination of the second World War in 1945 permits an appraisal of the effects of the conflict and the probable effects of the coming restoration of a peacetime economy on the nonmetallic mineral industries. Some industries were stimulated greatly by the war, notably mica, quartz crystal, graphite, spinning asbestos, potash, fluorspar, barite, and refractories. The large-tonnage industries connected with the building trades, however, were forced to curtail their activities, except where their products were needed for wartime construction. Their reconversion to peacetime production will not be difficult.

The copper deposit at White Pine, Michigan, from which a little more than 5 per cent of United States primary copper currently is produced, is a large stratiform orebody, 4 to 25 feet thick and several miles across. The present ore column, containing about 1.2 per cent copper as chalcocite and native copper, is confined to the basal beds of the Nonesuch Shale. This upper Keweenawan (Upper Precambrian) formation is a distinctive gray siltstone unit, about 600 feet thick, overlying and overlain by thick red-bed sequences. All these rocks contain abundant volcanic debris, but the latest known igneous activity within 50 miles antedated the Nonesuch Shale. The rocks are unmetamorphosed and only moderately deformed, mainly by tilting and faults. Pyrite, presumably syngenetic, is the only prominent sulfide throughout most of the Nonesuch Shale. The basal beds of the formation, however, contain disseminated copper minerals instead of pyrite and constitute the cupriferous zone. On a regional scale, the top of the cupriferous zone cuts across bedding, and ranges from an inch or so above the base of the formation in some areas to more than 50 feet in others. However, within the cupriferous zone the distribution of copper shows remarkable stratigraphic control. Certain beds are copper-rich compared to the beds that lie between them and the differences persist throughout the White Pine region. Several darkgray thinly laminated beds in the lower 10 to 25 feet of the Nonesuch Shale are rich enough and sufficiently close enough together to constitute a mineable thickness where they lie within the cupriferous zone. Pyrite is the characteristic sulfide of the Nonesuch Shale as a whole. The principal sulfide mineral of the cupriferous zone at the base of the formation is chalcocite. The succession of minerals outward and upward from the center of the cupriferous zone is native copper-chalcocite-bornite-chalcopyrite- pyrite. The bornite and chalcopyrite are confined to a narrow fringe at the margin of the cupriferous zone. This pattern of mineral zones is believed to represent reaction between syngenetic pyrite and introduced copper. The main copper mineralization is independent of structure and apparently antedates deformation. Details of the geometry of the cupriferous zone indicate the possibility that copper was introduced from the underlying sandstone prior to lithification. The source of the mineralizing solutions and their copper is not known.
