(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THE history of the several petroleum deposits of Texas and Mexico, or of the sediments in which they now occur, if the deposits are not indigenous to such sediments, is known in a general way only, but it nevertheless casts strong light on the conditions surrounding them and is of great importance in the search for and exploitation of then. The petroleum deposits of Texas are separable into two main divisions: 1. The deposits of northwestern Texas, which are directly connected with the Oklahoma fields to the north, and have no representatives at all in the Mexican area. 2. The deposits of the coastal area, which extend into Louisiana on the east and connect with those of the Mexican coast to the south. Early in the Pennsylvanian period a series of bituminous shales and limestones were laid crown over a broad area in Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. These are known as the Bend series in Texas, the Caney shales in Oklahoma, and the Fayetteville beds in Arkansas. Following their deposition an uplift occurred, forming the Lampasas geanticlinal, which runs northeastward from the old Paleozoic land area of the Llano region toward Red River. The Bend series is petroliferous in places and has furnished a few producing wells on each side of the Lampasas uplift. This uplift forms the barrier and. dividing line between the two divisions of the Texas petroleum deposits. To the west of it, in waters which were the southern extension of the interior continental seas, in connection with the sediments and coal beds of the Pennsylvanian and Permian, great quantities of petroleum were deposited either as oil or as "potential petroleum." These sediments have been subject to very slight disturbance, and only very gentle folds. are found, with no signs of volcanic action in any part of the area. The conditions, therefore, indicate that the greater part, if not all, of the oil in this area is indigenous to the beds in which it is found.

Water-propelled banks of carbon dioxide recovered both high- and low-viscosity crude oil substantially in excess of that recovered by water flood in linear flow model experiments. The increase in oil recovery is explained by oil swelling and viscosity reduction. Additional oil was recovered by solution gas drive at the end of the carbon dioxide floods when the model systems were depres-sured. This study was an investigation of the use of a water-driven carbon dioxide bank to recover crude oil. Techniques involving the injection of carbon dioxide have aroused con-siderable interest in recent years among methods considered for increasing oil recoveries. A number of investigators have studied the process in the laboratory1-' and in the field.7,5 Laboratory studies referenced indicate that carbon dioxide in conjunction with water flooding recovers more oil than does water flooding alone. These re- ports diverge widely, however, in stating magnitude of improvement. We believed that a water-driven carbon dioxide bank would increase recovery of crude oils by two mechanisms: viscosity reduction and oil swelling. Due to reduction in the oil viscosity caused by solution of carbon dioxide, displacement efficiency should be improved. In addition, the residual oil should be highly swollen by the carbon dioxide held in solution. Thus, the final residual oil saturation, in terms of stock-tank oil, would be lower than in the absence of carbon dioxide. To test this hypothesis, experi-

Aluminum alloys, in common with most other metallic alloys exhibit slight density changes with variations in temper achieved by heat-treatment, which usually are the result of the variation with temperature of the solid solubility of the various alloy constituents in the solvent metal. Changes in density are, of course, most marked in conditions that exhibit the maximum variation in solid solubility of the constituents. In aluminum alloys these conditions usually prevail when alloys are quenched from just below the melting point and are subsequently reheated to some lower temperature. Since commercial heat-treatments may be of this type, the density changes, although small (of the order of 0.3 per cent which may be compared with the density change of about 1.5 per cent involved in the transformation, at ordinary temperatures, of gamma to alpha iron during the hardening of steel), may in some specific applications necessitate quantitative consideration. This phenomenon has been investigated extensively in the laboratories of the Aluminum Company of America over a period of years. A number of investigators '-5t have observed and measured the density changes accompanying the heat-treatment of aluminum alloys. In general, these changes have not been directly translated to dimensional changes and their significance has been overlooked to some extent by the practical user of aluminum alloys. It is the purpose of this paper to consider some practical aspects of these density and dimensional changes. These density changes were given some consideration in 1917 in connection with the use of aluminum-alloy pistons for aircraft engines. Investigations by Lea and Shakespear were reported in some confidential reports of the British Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, Light Alloys Subcommittee, during 1917 and 1918, which are not generally available in published form. An investigation has been made to determine the applicability of the Cendrex X-ray instrument for the measurement of the ash contents of washed bituminous coal products. The results obtained for selected products from five preparation plants in the northern Appalachian region are described. Emphasis of the study was placed on low-ash bituminous coals suit-able for utility or metallurgical markets. There was good agreement between the results obtained by conventional ash determination methods and by the Cendrex for all the products tested. A principal disadvantage of coal in competition with other fuels has been its inconsistent quality, especially with respect to ash content. Mine rnechanization and production from coalbeds of inferior quality have accentuated this failing. Present quality control methods in coal preparation plants are inadequate because (1) control samples taken over a production shift only serve to give the average quality of the product, (2) conventional sampling and analysis data are usually not available at the time a shipment is scheduled, and (3) the plant operator does not have the use of such data when the coal is being processed so that operating conditions may be adjusted for correcting variations in quality. Thus, the development and use of continuous-control monitoring instruments is of prime importance. The Federal Bureau of Mines arranged to investigate an instrument using x-rays for rapid continuous ash determinations. Developed by the Dutch State Mines and first described in 1958,' this instrument, which has found widespread acceptance in Europe, is designed to provide ash analysis of any desired coal feed or product stream with only a five-minute time lag between sample collection and analytical results. With limit controls, this unit could be used to feed back signals to preset the separating gravity of coal washers, control the ratio of various coals needed to produce an acceptable blend, and permit the sorting of a washed product into two qualities, one which is below and the other which is above a prescribed ash content. This unit can also be used discontinuously for rapid determination of coal samples taken in the usual manner. THEORY Di jkstra and Sieswerda of the Dutch State Mines studied the effect of chemical composition and ash content on the absorption coefficient of coal with the transmitted radiation method.' They found that with an X-ray wavelength of 1.79 A and values calculated for the absorption coefficients of ash and combustibles, the absorption coefficient of coal gave a linear relationship when plotted against the ash content. Thus, a method of measuring the absorption coefficient of coal could also be used to measure the ash content. However, practical attempts to measure the ash content of coal by comparing the intensities of the transmitted X-rays failed. The absorption coefficient of coal can also be obtained by irradiating a layer of coal with x-rays and measuring the intensity of the diffused reflection (backscatter method). The relationship between the diffused reflection and the ash content is actually hyperbolic but approximates a straight line over a narrow range. A measuring circuit that balanced the difference in intensity of the reflected radiation from a standard surface against that from a coal sample was used. By plotting this difference of reflected radiation against the ash content, a curve which approximated a straight line over a range of 8 percentage points of ash was obtained. DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT The apparatus performs two distinct functions: (1) the preparation of the sample to a suitable size consist and moisture content for delivery to the x-ray element, and (2) the measurement of the ash content by the x-ray element. In a continuous operation the coal sample is delivered to a conditioner where it is dried to a maximum of 1% surface moisture and pulverized in a high speed mill to -48-mesh. This material is fed, at a rate of 250-300 gpm onto a rotating disk, shown in Fig. 1, where it is mixed with material already present. The mixture is rotated on the disk and

INTRODUCTION Studies relating to the Oakville aquifer as presented in this report and by Henry et al. (this volume), are part of a larger , comprehensive examination of regional and local stratigraphic, hydro- geologic, and geochemical parameters within the Oakville Formation recently completed by the Bureau of Economic Geology. The Oakville serves both as a major Gulf Coast aquifer and an important uranium host (Fig. 1). Regional and local controls on hydrodynamics and hydrochemistry have important implications for hydrochemical exploration, the establishment of premining baseline parameters, and the design of post mining restoration procedures. Investigations of the Oakville Formation were de- signed for the purpose of determining the response of the aquifer to uranium extraction and were funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under grant numbers R-805357-01 and R-805357-02. Physical Stratigraphy Physical stratigraphic analysis shows that the Oakville Sandstone, a lithostratigraphic unit deposited by a major coastal-plain f luvial system, consists of five mappable, component depositional elements (Figs. 2 and 3). Each major component element is the product of one or more rivers traversing the Miocene coastal plain. In turn, each river possessed a unique sediment load, discharge characteristics, and source terrane. Consequently, each element exhibits distinguishing geometric and compositional parameters that potentially influence the flux and hydrochemical evolution of contained ground waters (Galloway, Henry, and Smith, in preparation). The Oakvil le Sandstone, as mapped and interpreted as a lithostratigraphic unit in the study area, corresponds closely to the Jasper aquifer system, an equally well-defined Gulf Coastal Plain hydrogeologic unit (Baker, 1978). Principal surrounding hydrogeologic units include the underlying Catahoula confining system, the Jasper aquifer system itself, and the overlying Burkeville confining system (lower Fleming mudstones). The Evangeline aquifer system includes much of the Fleming Formation. The Jasper aquifer system is bounded above and below by relatively less transmissive, finer grained confining systems, although absolute transmissivity varies greatly within both the Jasper and confining units. Lithostratigraphic and hydrogeologic boundaries coincide almost exactly within the Hebbronville flu- vial axis (Fig. 3). Correspondence of geologic and hydrostratigraphic boundaries is good within the George West axis; farther to the northeast the correlation of the Jasper aquifer with units mapped as Oakville Formation diverges to varying degrees. A complete analysis of these trends and a study of the depositional facies comprising the Oakvillle are included in Galloway, Henry, and Smith (in preparation). REGIONAL HYDROGEOLOGY The stratigraphic, compositional, and structural framework of the Oakville Formation and the mosaic of interrelated depositional facies that are combined in this framework play a key role in defining the hydrogeology of the Oakville. Furthermore, a combination of climate and hydrogeology, as well as past and present socioeconomic conditions, has determined water and land use patterns within the region of Oakville outcrop. Utilization of Oakville Ground Water Stratigraphic control for determining which wells produce ground water from the Oakville aquifer was established by preparing structural and isopach maps of the Oakville Formation using regional electric log cross sections. Surface elevation and screened interval data (or total well depth, if open-hole completion techniques were used) from each water well, combined with the stratigraphic data, allowed accurate assessment of the producing aquifer for individual wells. IN recent print, some remarkably contradictory statements have appeared regarding the importance to be attached to sponge iron,1-6 a metallurgical commodity whose history goes back at least to the time of Diodorus Siculus in the fourth century B.C. This disagreement, however, expresses the lack of a satisfactory method for producing sponge iron rather than defection in the commodity. The blast furnace is admitted to have certain inherent disadvantages, such as a general unsuitability for magnetite and the heating and blowing of vast quantities of undesirable nitrogen, so that a workable sponge-iron process remains attractive. In this respect, low-temperature gaseous reduction shows especial promise; but confusion persists regarding the factors involved. The present paper, therefore, has three principal divisions: (I) an exhaustive examination of all previous work on low-temperature gaseous reduction, (2) experimentation on the reduction of a magnetite with hydrogen, and (3) development of certain thermodynamic relationships in reduction, with a summarized depiction of the factors in the general process. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS Gaseous media used in the reduction processes under discussion can be classified in three types: (I) H2, (2) CO, and (3) other gases. In the second, the CO is often admixed with H2. The third principally comprises hydrogeniferous gases, such as natural gas and producer gas, and in addition includes chlorine. Because hydrogen therefore features in all three, a study of hydrogen reduction based on investigations using pure hydrogen alone may be incomplete. The present paper reviews the three groups of investigations in the listed order, paying particular attention to hydrogen reduction. For the benefit of future workers, an exhaustive bibliography has been prepared and similarly classified. GROUP I: REDUCTION WITH HYDROGEN Equilibria Although the present problem is specifically one of kinetics, a first consideration is the equilibrium of the system, since the reactions to be studied comprise that equilibrium, and their direction and end points are defined by it. The historic development of these researches is interesting and informative.

The elastic effects occurring in the matrix of a composite reinforced by discontinuous fibers were studied by means of photoelastic techniques. A hirefringent plastic was employed as the matrix material with high-strength a Al2O3 whiskers as the reinforcing fibers. It was found that for whiskers aligned parallel to the tensile load direction: (I) Matrix reinforcement occurred along the length of the whisker to within about 5 diameters of the whisker tip for a length to diameter ratio, L/D, of 40. (2) Significant stress concentrations were created in regions immediately surrounding the tips; the fine as-formed tapered ends exhibited the minimum stress concentration whereas the square-ended whisker produced relatively high values, K r 2.5 for L/D = 40. (3) The axial and radial stress distributions could he determined quantitatively; the stress distribution at the whisker-matrix interface was in general agreement with theoretical calculations. (4) The highest source of stress concentration occurred at points of fracture in whiskers which had ruptured after incorporation into the composite. Whiskers aligned perpendicular to the load direction neither reinforced nor caused appreciahle stress concentrations in the matrix. ThE properties of composites have generally been formulated empirically on the basis of macroscopic tests. There are still many questions concerning the mechanical and chemical interactions occurring at the interface between the reinforcing fiber and its matrix. Continuously reinforced plastics and dispersion-hardened metals represent the two extremes of composite reinforcement. Whether artificially produced or formed in situ, the whisker composite falls between these two extremes and is an example of discontinuous fiber reinforcement. The effect of fiber shape, size, surface condition, and end configuration on the stress distribution in the matrix is important since the presence of stress concentrations, especially in any high-strength, thin-wall structure, could become the cause of catastrophic failure. DOW,' in his theoretical discussion of discontinuous fiber reinforcement, has pointed out that appreciable stress concentrations occur at the tips or ends of the reinforcing fibers. It is the purpose of this study to examine directly, by means of the photoelastic technique, the stresses which occur in the vicinity of a discontinuity or whisker tip and to measure qualitatively and quantitatively the effects of whisker geometry when embedded in a birefringent matrix material. The use of sapphire (a A1,O3) whiskers was decided upon as the reinforcing agent because of their high elastic modulus (E- 60 X 106 psi) and in some cases strengths in excess of one and a half million psi. Sapphire whiskers are of further practical interest since they retain large fractions of their strength up to temperatures approaching the melting point (3720oF).2 The whiskers were grown, by the vapor-phase reaction commonly employed,3 as part of this study to insure a physically uniform supply. Tensile and bend tests were performed to verify that the whiskers were of the expected ultra-high strength. The high-strength whiskers can be identified and selected from the combustion boats by surface perfection, shape, and size; otherwise, strength values can vary by a factor of ten or more. Macroscopic defects are quite common on the surface of large bladed whiskers and the principal experiments were conducted with hexagonal whiskers of about 0.002 in. diameter and lengths ranging from 0.1 to 0.4 in. Upon completion of these two phases of the experiment, several birefringent resins were evaluated. A plastic, developed by Zandman,4 which is supplied by the Budd Co., was found most suitable and was used as the matrix material for the whisker composite throughout the study. It has a sensitivity of 60.5 lb per in. order, calibrated in tension and cures without introducing residual stresses. Young's modulus for this matrix material is 430,000 psi in the fully cured condition. Since good wetting and bonding between the sapphire and the matrix material is essential to the interpretation of the results, a wettability test was performed. MANY fires have occurred in the mines of Butte in recent years, and while all have been of a serious nature, simply because they were mine fires, six of them have been especially dangerous in respect to loss of life and property, and the expense of extinguishing or controlling them. It is not my intention to discuss the relative merits of methods used in fighting these different fires because the conditions under which they occurred varied in each case, and it was not always advisable to expend the large sum of money necessary to actually extinguish them if they could he bulk-headed off from the rest of the mine. It is needless to say that everything possible has been done to check all fires at the beginning, but without success in some cases; and it has then become necessary to bulkhead all connections to them, in which state several now exist. The mine fires of Butte, or fires in any mine, may be divided into two classes, namely: Those occurring in accessible workings, and those occurring in inaccessible workings; because these two conditions govern to the greatest extent the methods of fighting fires. Accessibility and in-accessibility in the case of mine fires concern not only new open workings and old closed workings, respectively, but also the condition of the ventilation in and about those places. When a fire is accessible at the start it should not be difficult to confine it to a small area and extinguish it in a relatively short time, but when it is impossible to actually reach a fire in old filled, abandoned workings, or there is no opening by which the gases may be conducted away from the fire zone, then the time consumed in changing those conditions permits the fire to increase to such an extent that it is a long, hard fight to overcome it.

Introduction A successful step towards mechanisation of the collier's work was taken in 1954 when the first Anderton shearer loader was commissioned in Lancashire, and progress was reinforced in 1956 when the first powered supports were installed in Nottinghamshire. By 1970, virtually 100% of the coalfaces in the United Kingdom were mechanised and the industry's productivity had doubled. In 1961 the National Coal Board recognised that the next move towards greater productivity and improved safety would be to automate the longwall system. What was not well enough understood, however, was that the basic prerequisites of automation - reliability and measurement - had not yet been achieved. Consequently, the schemes for automatic longwall faces and for an entirely automated colliery were abandoned at the close of the decade. A review of mining research and development policy, commissioned by the Board in 1974, confirmed that the system of longwall mining had great potential for investment and that the short-term policy of automation must once again be pursued. Since then, aided by advances in computer technology, systems for automating the transport of coal from the face to the coal preparation plant have been successfully instituted. Applications of sub-systems dealing with the conveyor, coal preparation plant, and various items of fixed plant are now at the exploitation stage. In the medium term, a number of key problems have been identified, which will arise once the productivity from the coalfaces has doubled, as it is now expected to do in the next five years. One of the most important of these problems is machine guidance, and considerable research and development work is now being carried out in this area. This paper reviews the work on machine guidance prior to 1974 and explains the programme on which the National Coal Board's Mining Research and Development Establishment is currently working.

Carbon in pig iron is not only essential but, ordinarily, it is the most abundant metalloid present; iron without carbon could not be pig iron. Carbon in pig iron has been accepted, but seldom specified. How it gets into the pig iron as it is being smelted in the blast furnace, and why just about so much of it enters into the pig iron in certain blast furnaces, and more of it,; or less of it, enters the pig iron in other blast furnaces, or in the same blast furnace under varying conditions, are problems that have not yet been satisfactorily solved. During my own practical blast-furnace experience, I collected analyses of pig iron, including the graphitic and combined carbon, and recorded them in reference to the percentage of silicon present, having in mind the generally accepted explanation that "silicon drove out the carbon." To this actual experience, I have added some analyses given to me by J. B. Rogers, who was superintendent of the blast furnaces of the Ashland Iron & Mining Co., Ashland, Ky., and was making "silvery iron" at the time. These analyses are shown in Table 1. The analyses do not tell the whole story, but they show that with Pocahontas beehive coke, the total carbon was generally high. The data relating to the composition of the slag are lacking but my own customary practice was to have a rather basic slag. During my experience in making pig iron for the Bessemer and open-hearth departments, there were times when the steel men would complain about some mysterious quality in the pig iron that caused bad steel, in spite of the fact that the percentages of silicon, sulfur, phosphorus and manganese were within the specifications. Many reasons were advanced for this undetermined "poison" in the pig iron, but the favorite one offered by the steel men was that the blast-furnace man had "oxidized" the pig iron at the tuyeres in his eagerness to get big production and low cost. To these complaints of the users of steel-making pig irons were added those of the gray iron-foundry men and the malleable iron men. These groups are unaninlous in their conclusions that the trouble lies with the blast-furnace men; but there is not yet any harmonious conclusion as to the exact cause and remedy.

METALLURGISTS handling lead and zinc ores have long been familiar with the spectrograph as a routine analytical tool, as its earliest regular use by American industry was in controlling impurities of zinc metal and its alloys. This application has been extended to other metal industries on an extensive scale, accompanied by refinements of procedure to such an extent that a large part of some metals produced, especially magnesium, aluminum and steel, are checked only by spectrographic methods for conformity to specifications. The spectrographic analysis of ores and other poorly conducting powdered solids presents difficulties not encountered with metallic samples, which can be arced or sparked as self-electrodes or can be readily dissolved, so that their solutions can be analyzed, as in the American Society for Testing Materials standard methods for zinc and zinc-base alloys. Spectra of powdered solid samples can be prepared by using carbon electrodes provided with a crater of suitable size, into which the sample is packed. Ore samples and many other powdered solid materials usually analyzed in the chemical and metallurgical laboratory are more complex and varied in composition than samples of metals produced in large tonnages. More preliminary work therefore is usually necessary in devising a spectrographic method for analyzing a given type of powdered sample than for analyzing metal samples, in order to use that method with confidence. The knowledge that the standard samples and unknowns produce equivalent line intensities at equal concentration is the fundamental basis of any quantitative spectrographic method. On the other hand, powdered samples have an advantage over metals in that any desired number of chemical compounds can be mixed dry in any desired ratio to produce a synthetic standard. Experience has shown, however, that spectra of elements in finely divided compounds introduced into a standard in preparing a synthetic ore sample do not always behave in the electric arc in a manner that produces spectral line intensities similar to those observed at the same concentration in a natural mineral. In ore samples minor elements frequently are contained in the crystal lattice of larger particles of an abundant ore mineral. Their dissociation and volatilization from the sample into the arc then proceeds differently in the standard and sample, with resultant differences in intensity. During the past 10 years I have devised and applied several quantitative spectrographic methods for determining various elements in rocks and minerals in connection with studies on their geochemistry,1 but the incentive has gradually changed since the summer of 1940 to the specific practical problem of searching for domestic sources of rare and strategic metals. RECENT explorations with a diamond-drill, originated and conducted by Mr. J. A. Van Mater, Superintendent of the Lehigh Zinc and Iron Company, have revealed some very important geological facts, which, it is believed, will be of special practical interest to mining engineers. During these explorations the writer was frequently called in consultation, and hence the facts here recorded are almost entirely the results of personal observation. IN recent papers, O'Neill,1 Vivian,2 and Zener and Hollomon3 have reviewed some of the information concerning the relations between stress and strain during plastic deformation. Since further information has been obtained since these reviews were published, this paper attempts to further coordinate and amplify the knowledge concerning the plastic deformation of metals in simple tension. Ordinarily the results of tensile tests of metals are presented as graphs in which the load divided by the original area is plotted as a function of the percentage of elongation measured over some specified gauge length. The interpretation of graphs of this sort is limited, since the stress required to deform the metal at any stage of the deformation is actually the load divided by the instantaneous rather than the original area. Furthermore, each increment of the deformation is performed on metal that has been previously deformed, and, as pointed out by Ludwik,4 the strain could be more effectively defined: [e = In A t][I] where a is the strain and Ao and A are, respectively, the original and instantaneous areas. The results of the tensile tests can be more effectively presented and interpreted if the stress* (load divided by actual area) is plotted as a function of the strain as defined above. A schematic curve of this type is presented as Fig. I. In a previous paper,6 the concept of Ludwik7 concerning the flow and fracture of metals was successfully employed to explain some of the puzzling results of notched-bar impact tests of steel. It appears that the use of this concept is very fruitful and should be kept in mind in any study of the deformation characteristics of metals. Ludwik considered that a flow stress-strain curve of a metal was essentially a locus of points that described the stress required for plastic flow of an infinite number of specimens, each with a different strain history determined by the preceding part of the flow curve. Each of these specimens can also be considered to have a fracture strength. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending upon the point of view), all the specimens, except the one deformed to the fracture strain, flow and do not fracture. By definition the word "grout" means a thin mortar, or a kind of plaster or ce¬ment, and "grouting" means to fill up or finish with grout. The words "cement," "plaster" and "mortar" mean a substance that is used in a soft state which subsequently hardens. Thus, grouting is the filling of void space with a substance that hardens. Construction cements are the most common substances used, either by themselves or in mixtures, but the term grouting is applied quite correctly when other substances such as plastics and certain chemicals are used. Also, the use of the term grouting to cover the filling of voids with materials that do not actually become hard, such as the-flotation tailings used in grouting in the southeast Missouri lead district, should be considered correct, as some stiffening does take place and, anyway, it is a better descriptive term than any substitute. Engineers are interested in grouting because some of the materials with which they must work contain voids, and certain conditions can be improved if these voids can be filled with something solid and permanent. Grouting is done to accomplish several purposes: I. To stop the passage of fluids and gases, 2. To cement materials together to make them stronger, and 3. To prevent consolidation of materials by filling void space with something solid as a replacement for the air and water that could be forced out under load. The construction industry uses grouting extensively for all three purposes. Grouting is used to stop water percolation under and around dams. It is used to control water flow in tunnel driving and in shaft sinking. It is used to improve foundation conditions under civil engineering structures by permanently filling void space and thereby reducing settlement, or by cementing broken rock together and increasing its supporting strength. The oil and gas industry does a lot of grouting, primarily to stop the passage of gases and fluids. The search for oil at increasingly greater depths has meant greater investment per well, and the oil industry has spent large sums on development of improved drilling methods. This

The existence of a surface charge on the alkali halide salts is shown, and a flotation mechanism involving surface charge and collector solubility is developed. Data suggest that KC1 is positively charged and that NaCl is negatively charged in saturated brines, and that the neutral molecule RNH,Cl is the collector in the amine-KC1 system, RSO, is the collector in the sulfonate-KC1 system, and RCOONa) is the collector in the fatty acid-NaCl system. A number of hypotheses have been advanced to explain the mechanism of soluble salt flotation; one of these involves exchange between collector ions and surface cations. With this mechanism Gaudin1 suggested that the differences in flotability of halite and sylvite with primary amines are due to the ionic size of the RNH;, Kt, and Na t ions. Fuerstenau and Fuerstenau expanded this hypothesis to include many other alkali halide salts. Several exceptions to this hypothesis are known. That is, this model does not explain why salts containing the same cation, or why salts of different degrees of hydration, respond differently to flotation. For example, why NaI is floated with an amine whereas NaI .2H,O is not. Further, no correlation between ionic size and flotation response can be made with sulfonate or car-boxylate as collectors. In addition, this hypothesis does not explain the effect of magnesium or lead activation, nor does it offer any explanation of the role of temperature in salt flotation. Rogers and Schulman3 realized some of the inadequacies of the ion exchange mechanism and proposed another mechanism based on the heat of solution of the salts. They concluded that weakly hydrated salts can be floated with alkyl amines and sulfonates, that strongly hydrated salts can be floated with fatty acids, and that excessively hydrated salts cannot be floated at all. Lightweight aggregates include a variety of mineral and rock materials used to provide bulk in concrete building units (block), light- weight structural concrete, and precast concrete units, as plaster aggregate, insulating fill, and other structural and/or insulation purposes. They are distinguished from other mineral aggregate materials by their lighter unit weight- 80 to 100 pounds per cubic foot (pcf) or less for loosely packed lightweight aggregates as compared to 125 pcf or more for crushed stone, sand, gravel, air-cooled slag, and other more common mineral aggregates. The various lightweight aggregate materials may be classified into four groups as follows: 1) Natural Lightweight Aggregate Materials-prepared by crushing and sizing natural rock materials such as pumice, scoria, tuff, breccia, and volcanic cinders. 2) Manufactured Structural Lightweight Aggregates-prepared by pyroprocessing clay, shale, or slate in rotary kilns or on traveling grate sintering machines. 3) Byproduct Lightweight Aggregates-prepared by crushing and sizing foamed and granulated slag, cinders, and coke breeze. With the exception of processed slag, this group is becoming less important as time passes. 4) Manufactured Insulating Ultralight- weight Aggregates-prepared by pyroprocessing ground vermiculite or perlite. This chapter will focus on the use of natural lightweight aggregates and manufactured insulating ultralightweight aggregates, and both the production and use of manufactured structural lightweight aggregates with some comments on byproduct materials. Detailed discussion of the production and use of both expanded and air-cooled slag is presented in a separate chapter in the utilization section of this volume, and there are separate commodity chapters on vermiculite, perlite, pumice, and volcanic cinders. Discussion of the commodities covered elsewhere in the book will be limited to observations on their utilization and relation to other lightweight aggregate materials. All materials considered as lightweight aggregates are derived from some initial natural raw material. While historical definitions have included such organic materials as straw and peat as lightweight aggregates, the discussion in this chapter will restrict itself to lightweight aggregates derived from mineral or rock materials. Thus while the actual lightweight material in use may be a manufactured product, it is derived from an ore or raw material that is obviously a mineral resource. In this context, then, the reserves of raw materials for lightweight aggregate use may include iron ore and flux stone (the components of blast furnace slag) as well as coal (the raw material from which cinders are derived) as well as those clay, shale, and slate deposits that display the characteristics of bloating or controlled expansion when subjected to elevated temperatures (1600 to 2400°F.).

This somewhat misnomered "continuous" face section is, in most mines today, still far from perfect continuity. Achieving uninterrupted flow of coal from the mining machine to the outside has been a long sought for goal. Clearly, the largest problem to be solved in continuous mining today is one of increasing the cutting time of the miner. Full machine utilization can never be achieved with the new high capacity miners as long as their performance is tied to that of the shuttle car. A recent development has proven, however, that truly continuous mining and haulage is possible. The Bell & Zoller Coal Co. working with the Research and Development Department of Hewitt-Robins Inc. developed and perfected a new mining system which offers advantages in terms of increased productivity at reduced mining costs and enhances the safety of personnel at the face. This new system involves the use of two pieces of equipment that form an unbroken link between the mining machine and the mine belt haulage system. These pieces are a Mobile Bridge Conveyor and an Extensible Panel Conveyor.

Samples of iron containing nitrogen or carbon have been given treatments similar to those used in cold-work peak (CWP) measurements and examined by transmission electron microscopy. It was observed that the unusual and nonreproducible behavior of the carbon CWP can be explained by a strong tendency for carbon to form grain boundary precipitates at temperatures below those used for CWP measurements. These precipitates dissolved at the temperatures used in the CWP measurements. There was no evidence for nitrogen precipitation at grain boundaries. There was no indication of precipitation along dislocations in either carburized or nitrided samples given treatments similar to those of CWP measurements. Although it is possible that subelectron-microscopic clustering had occurred, this observation supports the theories of the CWP that are based on continuous atmospheres rather than on individual precipitates. In an earlier paper,' the present authors developed a new distribution function to predict the occupation of sites for interstitial impurity atoms around a dislocation. When this distribution was applied to the case of carbon and nitrogen in iron, it predicted that, if the temperature dependence of the concentration of solute atoms in the matrix was controlled by the presence of equilibrium carbide or nitride precipitates, the tendency for nitrogen to segregate to dislocations would be greater than that for carbon even though their binding energies to dislocations are identical. The cold-work internal-friction peak (CWP) is considered by most authors to be produced by the interaction of interstitial impurities with dislocations. Many investigators have studied the CWP in iron containing carbon and nitrogen and have observed a significant difference between its behavior in the two cases. In this paper a series of experiments will be reported that were initiated to determine whether the application of the new distribution function would explain the observed differences between the carbon and nitrogen CWP. Although it was found that the distribution function, pev se, did not explain the differences, the differences became clear, and some insight into the mechanism of the CWP was realized. Before reporting the present experiments, the literature pertaining to the differences between the carbon and nitrogen CWP in iron and the various mechanisms proposed for the CWP will be reviewed. LITERATURE REVIEW Snoek2 first observed the CWP in iron specimens containing nitrogen, but also reported a weak and unreliable peak in carburized samples. Later, Ke3 established that the CWP height was proportional to the degree of deformation. The presence of nitrogen alone would produce a peak of the same size as found in a sample containing both nitrogen and carbon, and KG concluded that the CWP was caused by nitrogen. In a discussion of G's paper it was reported that Dijkstra had investigated the CWP in samples that contained only carbon. He found it to be much smaller than the nitrogen peak and "unstable". KG et al.4 charged specimens of iron with both carbon and nitrogen. They observed that the carbon CWP was much smaller than that observed in nitrided samples, but that aging at 300°C caused the carbon peak to increase. A similar treatment produced no change in a nitrogen peak. Annealing at higher temperatures caused the height of the CWP in both the nitrogen and carbon samples to decrease. This behavior was also observed by Kamber et al. 5 who found that the activation energy for the annealing of the CWP was identical with the activation energy for the self-diffusion of iron. They concluded that the annihilation of dislocations by climb caused the reduction in the CWP height. Kamber et al. studied the "unstable" carbon peak in detail. They measured both the Snoek and CWP during various aging treatments. In carburized samples, aging at 100°C caused the Snoek peak to disappear, although the CWP peak remained small. However, a subsequent treatment for 5 hr at 240°C caused the CWP to reach a maximum. They proposed that an additional location for the carbon, other than whatever site produced the CWP, is present. In nitrided samples the CWP was completely developed as soon as a measurement was made; additional sites are not present. No explanation of either the additional site or the difference in the behavior of carbon and nitrogen was offered. petarra5 performed a systematic study of the effect of composition on the CWP. Using three kinds of "pure" iron, he showed that there was a residual CWP when the carbon and nitrogen concentrations had been reduced to less than that detectable by Snoek-peak measurements. He observed the same general annealing behavior and composition dependence as previous investigators, with the following exceptions. On first measuring the carbon CWP, it was found to be identical with the residual peak, and essentially independent of the carbon content. If the CWP was measured a second time in the same sample, it increased in size, but was still only about one-fourth the size of a CWP in a sample of the same iron nitrided to the same composition. In Bessemer-steel practice, air is blown through a bath of iron, or projected strongly upon its surface to burn out silicon, manganese, and cafbon. Toward the end of the blow, when the iron is not protected from oxidation by these elements and the excess of air becomes great, there is oxidation of the iron. In open-hearth practice, the same difficulty is experienced with dissolved gas and oxides in the product, though not to as great or severe a degree as in the Bessemer process because the oxidizing conditions grow less severe as the end of the heat is approached, and if the bath is allowed to boil for a time it undoubtedly frees itself from a large part of the gas and oxides which have been absorbed in the earlier part of the process. Basic open-hearth steel is usually assumed to contain a larger proportion of oxides than acid open-hearth steel, but it may be said that all steel, Besserner and open-hearth, contains more or less oxide of iron dissolved in the fluid metal at the end of the "blow" or "heat." That certain metals are solvents for their respective oxides has been shown, in the case of copper, by Heyn, and, in the case of iron, by Law. It is indicated that the solubility of iron oxide in iron increases with the purity and temperature of the metal. This confirms what is observed and known by operating men, and these observations may be summarized as follows: 1. Cast iron. is rarely subject to oxidation, as is logical from its composition. 2. Normal steel, unless deoxidizers are added, contains blow holes. 3. Steel known to be oxidized is full of blow holes. 4. The addition of deoxidizers prevents, to a greater or less degree, the formation of blow holes in normal steel. With these observations in mind, it is logical to deduce that the cause of blow holes lies in part in the presence of dissolved oxide of iron in the molten steel and its consequent reaction with the carbon of recarburizers, when these are added, to form gases.
