Chromium is one of the new metals, but considerable research has been required to determine an approximate record of its production from 1827 until the present. Its use in the form of pure metal is not extensive; of the chromite mined, about one-half is required for making ferrochro-mium, about two-fifths goes directly into refractories and the remainder is absorbed chiefly by the chemical trades. The industries that demand chromite for such uses are mainly in countries that produce little chromite, while the important chromite-producing countries are not generally consumers. The international flow of chromite is therefore of interest, as well as the political and commercial control of resources of the metal. World Production The first mining of chromite is said to have occurred as early as 1820, at the Roros deposit in Norway, but the first well-established output came from the Reed mine, in Maryland, about 1827. Thereafter the United States led the world in chromite production until 1860, when Turkey took the lead. Russia in turn became the chief producer from 1897 to 1902, inclusive. From 1903 to 1909, New Caledonia held first place, but alternated with Southern Rhodesia from 1910 to 1917, inclusive. In 1918, 1919 and 1920-1921, the United States, India and New Caledonia led, respectively. In 1922 Southern Rhodesia assumed first place and has since continued to be the world's foremost producer by a large margin. Fig. 1 illustrates the production of the leading countries from 1890 to 1929, inclusive. Fig. 2 shows the world production of chromite from 1890 to 1929, inclusive, in long tons and Table 2 gives the production by countries for the same period. The total world production for the 103 years, 1827 to 1929, ipclusive, is estimated at about 7,100,000 long tons, distributed as shown in Table 1. Summary In response to a growing intolerance towards ground vibrations and noise as environmental pollutants the engineer must consider the effects of his operations as they are likely to be judged subjectively by the public at large. Much work has been done on the study of vibration damage to structures, but the damage criteria normally applied do not take into account any resonance effects, nor do they embody any subjective criterion. Mu1tiple criterion techniques of subjective appraisal have proven to be of value .in the assessment of environmental comfort in relation to ventilation, air conditioning, and lighting. One such scale, the Reiher-Meister Scale, has also been applied to ground vibrations and noise, and an attempt has been made to correlate this scale with objective criteria, using the parameters of frequency and displacement. This paper quotes examples and compares ground vibrations resulting from blasting, the operation of, vibrating and impact-hamner pi1e drivers, forge hammers, and railway and road traffic. The Reiher- Meister Scale was applied to a subjective-objective correlation in relation to vibrations from railway traffic and gave results which did not conflict with experience.

The Ce-Cu phase diagram was investigated by differential thermal analysis and rnetallography. Two congruent melting compounds, CeCu2 (817°C) and CeCua (938°C), and three incongruent cornpounds, CeCu (516°C), CeCu, (796°C), and CeCu, CERIUM and copper have been suggested as possible diluents in a liquid-plutonium fueled reactor. As part of the determination of the Ce-Cu-Pu ternary phase diagram, a review Of the Ce-Cu system (798°C), are present in this system. Eutectics exist at 28 at. pct Cu (424°C), 74 at. pct Cu (756°C), and 91 at. pct Cu (876°C). The purity of the cerium used has an important effect on the results obtained by differential thermal analysis. was considered necessary. Previous work by Hanaman was conducted with relatively impure metal: 96.7 pct Ce with 2.5 pct other rare earths and 0.5 pct Fe as major impurities. The metal had a melting point of 715°C as compared to the melting point for pure cerium of 804°C as reported by Spedding and Daane.2 Results presented in this work were obtained primarily by differential thermal analysis (DTA) and metallographic examination of slow-cooled or quenched samples.

IF the tonnage of merchantable iron ore remaining in the Lake Superior district is divided by the average of the annual shipments for the past 20 years, it will be found that this ore supply will be exhausted in approximately 35 years. This computed exhaustion period would be an indication of the future activities of the iron-mining industry if it were not for the fact that merchantable ore is being manufactured from low-grade ore, of which there is an almost inexhaustible supply in the Lake Superior district. It is true that at present only the simplest of these low-grade ores are being concentrated to any considerable extent, but progress is being made with the treatment of the more complex ores, and now, in addition to 20 washing plants on the Mesabi Range, three plants are equipped with jigs for the treatment of ore that cannot be concentrated simply by washing. The latest addition to the ore-treating plants of the Mesabi Range is a magnetic roasting and concentration plant at Cooley, Minn., in which ore that cannot be concentrated either by washing or by jigging is roasted to the magnetic state and concentrated on magnetic separators. This plant is beginning its third season of operation, and while it is too soon to make definite predictions, there are strong indica-tions that this new process may make commercially possible the manu-facture of high-grade, merchantable iron ore from large quantities of low-grade ore now considered worthless. After the iron oxide contained in an ore has been converted to mag-netite, almost any desired grade of concentrate can be produced, using magnetic-concentration equipment of the types now in general use for the concentration of the natural magnetites of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The conversion of hematite (Fe203) to magnetite (Fe304) is easily accomplished by heating the ore to a dull red tempera-ture in a reducing atmosphere. The reaction is slightly endothermic, and while it requires 200 B.t.u. to heat to 900° F. one pound of hematite ore containing 45 per cent Fe, it requires only 100 B.t.u. to convert the oxide into magnetite. THE subject of this chapter is the application of the dislocation theory to two problems of physical metallurgy where the theory has been able to give definite predictions that subsequently have been verified by experimental observations. Much of the history of dislocation theory has consisted of the explanation of already established results on the basis of ad hoc assumptions. Scattered bits of fundamental theory were formulated as needed-in particular explanations. The result had the appearance of a hodgepodge of ingenious ideas and exciting but possibly artificial speculations. The review article by Koehler and Seitz in this volume gives an excellent picture of the breadth, diversity, and flexibility that have made dislocation theory attractive to speculative theorists, although occasionally bewildering to others. Since 1950, there have been two developments, which have helped to establish dislocation theory, on the one hand, as a systematic coherent body of theory and, on the other, as a means of making predictions that can be tested experimentally and thereby guide experiment into more fruitful channels. The first and easier of these developments has been the systematic derivation of the classes and properties of dislocations from fundamental crystallographic concepts. The orientation and temperature dependence of the tensile and creep propevties oj Mav-M200 crystals halle been determined. Crystals oriented for single slip exhibit ,maximum ductility, minimum work hardening, and least creep resistance, whereas crystals in multiple slip orientations show nzinimu~n ductility, strongest work hardening, and greatest creep resistance. At 1400" and 1600°F there is a marked improzlenzent in creep strength for orientations approaching [001] and [111], indicating that interactions between dislocations gliding in intersecting octahedral slip systems play an important role in creep resistance. At 1800°F the creep strength is much less dependent on orientation, which is rationalized in terms of slip in cube planes as well as octahedral A frequent mode of failure in high-strength cast nickel-base superalloys is by intergranular fracture, particularly along those grain boundaries oriented transverse to the major stress axis. VerSnyder and ~uard' demonstrated that this problem could be overcome by eliminating transverse grain boundaries through unidirectional solidification. Piearcey and versnyder2 made use of this principle in the development of unidirectionally solidified gas turbine blades and vanes, where the growth direction of the columnar grain structure coincides with the axis of principal stress under operating conditions. The present investigation was undertaken to determine if further improvement in properties may be obtained by eliminating grain boundaries altogether, so as to take advantage of the well-known dependence of mechanical properties of single crystals upon the orientation. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals of Mar-M200* were grown from the melt under vacuum by a modified Bridgman method. The melt was poured into a preheated alumina mold, and crystal growth was promoted from one end by appropriate gradient cooling. Tensile and creep specimens (2 in. diam by $ in. gage length) were prepared by a series of operations involving electrical discharge machining, precision grinding, and electropolishing. The orientations of the specimens were determined by the Laue X-ray back-reflection method. Tensile tests were carried out in aWiedemann machine with furnace attachment, using a strain rate planes. In all orientations imzpvouement in the strength charactevistics of the material can be induced by heat treatment. Creep ad stress rupture data for (001) oriented crystals are compared with similar data obtailted previously joy random polycvystalline material, and also columnar grained material having a prejevved (001) orientation. The single-crystal )material exhibits both longer rupture life and lower minimum creep rate at all temperatuves, and the rupture elongation is comparable with that in the columnar grained material. From these results it is concluded that single crystals should and useful application in gas-turbine blades and tanes. The optimum orientation for a blade is considered to be with its axis of principal stvess parallel to (001) ou (111). of 0.0001 sec-'. Load and extension were recorded directly on an X-Y recorder. The strain measuring device consisted of extension arms attached to the grips at one end and leading out of the furnace to an LVDT (linear variable differential transformer) at the other. Creep tests were performed using a standard constant load creep frame. 2) DISCUSSION OF RESULTS 2.1) Structure of Alloy. The structure and segregation in as-cast and heat-treated Mar-M200 has been described in detail else where.~ The main features are as follows: the as-cast material is heavily cored, due to pronounced dendritic segregation during solidification; the dendrites are rich in tungsten and cobalt whereas the interdendritic regions are rich in chromium, titanium, nickel, and carbon. The structure consists of -60 vol pct coherent precipitate of y', basically Ni3(A1,Ti), in a matrix of y (nickel-base solid solution), interspersed in the interdendritic regions with minor MC carbides and -y' eutectic. The y' particles, and y-y' eutectic, contain more titanium, aluminum, and nickel, and less tungsten, cobalt, and chromium than the y matrix. Heat treatment partially removes segregation, eliminates the eutectic, refines the y' dispersion in y, and gives additional partially coherent M23Cs carbide. An as-cast crystal, therefore, is composed primarily of two oriented phases (y + y'), whereas the normally heat-treated crystal consists of three oriented phases (y + y' + MZ3Cs). Typical electron transmission micrographs of the y + y' structure are shown in Fig. 1. Crystals grown in the (100) orientation develop a simple unidirectional dendritic structure, Fig. 2, since (100) happens to be the preferred direction of growth for dendrites in this material. Crystals grown in the {110) and (111) orientations, however, tend to promote equal growth, generally in separate colonies, in the two and three geometrically favored (100) growth directions, respectively. THE practical importance of the phenomena of melting and freezing must have been recognized for a very long time. The difference between ice and water, for example, has had a profound influence on the history of mankind and the evolution of society. The possibility of melting a metal and allowing it to freeze in a mold of chosen shape has been an essential ingredient in our mastery of the art of shaping metals, and therefore in the evolution of the: machine age in which we find ourselves. The importance of melting and freezing, as applied to metals and alloys, has been so great, in fact, that empirical solutions have been found for the multitude of practical problems that have arisen. This approach has been so successful that relatively little attention has been directed to arriving at an understanding of the fundamentals of the processes. But metallurgy has come to a stage at which we may expect that some, at least, of the more complex problems that have not yet been solved (or perhaps even recognized) may be handled more effectively by scientific study, theoretical understanding, and logical experimentation than by trial and error. In this lecture, therefore, I propose to describe in outline what I think really happens when a metal freezes. In doing so I hope to explain many of the phenomena which have been observed, and in particular to account for the structures that are obtained in actual ingots and castings. The basic problem, to which this lecture represents a tentative partial answer, is this: a mass of metal, containing known proportions of various elements, is melted, heated to a given temperature, and then allowed to freeze under specified conditions. What will be the "structure" of the resulting metal? The term structure includes: 1—crystal size, shape, and orientations, 2—distribution of chemical elements, and 3-—shape, including cracks, cavities, pores, etc. The Solid-Liquid Interface We will first consider what takes place if a single crystal of a metal in the form of a rod is heated, not uniformly, but so that one end is hotter than the other. If this heating process is continued long enough, the hotter end will eventually melt; we will suppose that the rod is in a containing vessel so that the molten metal does not run away, Fig. 1. When some of the metal has melted, we have some solid, some liquid, and an interface or surface of contact between them. If the source of heat is now removed, the interface will move so that some of the liquid freezes, and if the supply of heat is suitably adjusted the interface will remain at rest. This very simple arrangement allows us to study the basic processes of melting and freezing, and if we fully understand this simple case, we may be able to account for what takes place under practical conditions where the heat does not all flow in the same direction, and where the heat flow is determined not by a controllable source of heat but by the heat capacity and temperature of metal and mold, and by the heat loss from the mold surface. The solid-liquid interface is evidently the region of the greatest interest to us; on one side of it there is crystalline solid, and on the other, liquid. In the solid, each atom has a well defined position, around which it vibrates as a result of thermal agitation. It only leaves this position in the relatively rare event of a "diffusion jump." The liquid is much less systematically organized. The atoms are about as far from their neighbors as in the solid, but the arrangement is much less systematic and is continuously changing. The solid and the liquid are represented diagrammatically in Fig. 2. The average energy of the atoms in the liquid is greater than in the solid by an amount that corresponds to the latent heat of fusion, i.e., the amount of heat that has to be supplied to convert unit mass of solid into liquid at the same temperature. The Two Processes As has recently been shown by Jackson and Chalmers,3 many of the features of the processes of freezing and melting can be understood if it is assumed that a continuous and rapid interchange of atoms between solid and liquid always takes place at a solid-liquid interface." It is necessary to con- sider two distinct processes, that of melting, in which atoms leave the surface of the solid and become part of the liquid, and the converse process,

The fundamental principles and modern techniques of experimental planning and data analysis, applicable to any type of research, are particularly important in flotation experimentation. Since they constitute the modern science of experimentation, they should be among the working tools of any scientist, research engineer, or plant operator engaged in flotation investigates. This chapter is a review of these principles and techniques. Equipment and procedures for the actual conduct of experiments will not be discussed here since these subjects are well covered elsewhere in this volume. Neither will any attempt be made to impart a working knowledge of statistical methods of data analysis since this would be impossible in the space allotted, and many excellent texts are available to the diligent inestigator.1-4 The objective here is simply to interest the reader in the application of statistical techniques to flotation experimentation by illustrating their utility in situations frequently encountered, and to point out the principles of experimental planning necessary for their proper use. Any conscientious metallurgist engaged in flotation experimentation or operations is well aware of the inherent complexity of the flotation process, and of the often frustrating difficulties this introduces into experimentation. The raw materials normally treated by the process are complex both physi- cally and chemically, and often highly variable even when from the same source. The flotation process itself is characterized by a very large number of potentially important process variables. Many of these are beyond the con- trol of the metallurgist, and some cannot even be measured quantitatively with available instruments. Those which can be measured and controlled with reasonable precision often produce effects which are intricately interrelated. Not only are the variables many, but the physical and chemical mechanisms by which they function are imperfectly under stood. To compound the difficulty, experimental techniques are relatively crude. Controls are not very precise, and the human factor looms large in most flotation experiments. These situations lead inevitably to experimental data of a relatively low degree of precision or reproducibility. Some are inclined to think that these conditions are unique to flotation experimentation. They are not. The experimental problems met by the agronomist, the biologist, the social scientist, and others are equally complex. Investigators in these fields pioneered in the development of methods for handling just such situations by proper experimental planning and the application of statistical methods in the analysis of data. Their pioneering work has grown into a well established modern science of experimentation which has spread into every field of science. This science is based upon statistical

When an excavation is made underground the original rock stresses are removed from the surfaces of the excavation. These surfaces converge to partially close the excavation and the superincumbent rock mass moves down towards the excavation. If the convergence of the surfaces of the excavation were controlled, energy generated by their motion against the controlling forces could be extracted. Since the total forces in the rock mass are not significantly affected by the excavation, stress concentrations arise around the excavation, which compensate exactly for those stresses no longer transmitted through the excavation. These phenomena give rise to two general principles which provide the basis for analyzing the effects of making any underground excavation. The first of these is that the total force resulting from the stresses across any plane in the rock, including any plane through the excavation, must be the same before and after the excavation is made. The second of these is that energy must necessarily be released as a result of making an underground excavation. It is instructive to consider the implications of these two principles for two extreme cases of material behavior between which the actual behavior of rock must lie, namely, the behavior of a fluid and the behavior of an elastic solid. For the purpose of analysis in this paper, an underground excavation is defined as an excavation in which the smaller horizontal dimension of any open void at a particular horizon is less than the depth of that horizon below surface. In the case of a fluid, any unsupported excavation would fill immediately, as a fluid cannot sustain shear stresses. For the same reason, stress concentrations could not arise and the forces across any plane would necessarily be the same before and after excavation. The year 1954 witnessed great activity in the field of geology as applied to mining. The search for in nearly all districts is becoming more and more intensified as established reserves are being depleted. Much geologic work has been directed to finding extensions of known orebodies, but prospecting in new areas has constituted a large part of the program of many operators. The acute need for additional reserves has brought into the search all the tools known to the geologic profession. This is reflected directly by frequent references to geophysical and geochemical methods in the regional reviews that follow. The lone prospector of the early days of metal mining has been eliminated almost completely by modern scientific methods involving surface and subsurface geology, exploratory drilling, geophysics, and geochemistry. Nearly all new exploration is based on long-range programs coupled with studies of regional geology to determine the structural environment of areas of mineralization. The success of this approach has encouraged new operators in the field of exploration to adopt similar policies. Only in the search for uranium ores is the individual prospector still active, but the familiar picture of the burro heavily loaded with grubstake, gold pan, and pick and shovel has been replaced by the Geiger counter and the scintillometer carried by hand, by truck, or by airplane.

At the time flotation appeared upon the metallurgical horizon in Arizona, the writer, under the direction of Dr. Ricketts, was engaged in remodeling and enlarging the No. 6 Concentration Plant of the Arizona Copper Co. at Morenci, and the work had been in progress nearly a year before the Inspiration experiments with flotation had disclosed the revolution in concentration that was at that time impending. The simplified flow sheet worked out for the remodeling of the Morenci plant had been based upon the removal of the freed metal in a minimum number of stages by treatment upon tables equipped with Butchart riffles, the latter being adapted to accomplish both classification of feed and removal of the metal at one operation, substantially as described in my previous paper.l The scheme of treatment for the slime was based upon the well-known fact that after copper sulphides, such as chalcocite and chalcopy-rite, etc., are reduced to a certain extremely fine state of comminution they are definitely beyond the reach of separation upon any of the concentrating devices then known. By using drag-belt classifiers (which served as conveyors as well as separators), the overflow ,would be of the usual "slimes" class. Experiment had shown that when these drag-belt overflows were properly diluted (that is, to about 5 to 7 per cent. solids in the feed under treatment) the very fine sand, and especially the very fine but still granular sulphide particles, would, if given a short distance to fall, quickly settle out in prime condition to yield an excellent recovery on vanners; a further valuable feature would be that the very fine non-separable final overflow tonnage might be discharged direct to tailing, thus conserving space requirements so as to permit within the old building, without embarrassment, the increase of capacity required. CHARGING of an open-hearth heat is begun as soon as possible after the previous heat has been tapped. Ordinarily, about 40 min. is required to drain and dress the furnace hearth, make up the tap hole, and perform routine repairs of the banks. Repairs to the upper back wall and to the front wall and jambs can ordinarily be done while the first scrap charge is being heated and are therefore allowed to wait in order to save furnace time. Any major repairs required on the hearth or other parts of the furnace necessitate longer delays, because such repairs must be made while the furnace is empty. Although charging practice varies considerably in detail with the type and proportions of scrap and iron used, many factors are common to all varieties of' charge. Such general considerations are dealt with first. GENERAL CHARGING PRACTICE Charge materials are discussed in detail in Chapter IV; the present chapter is concerned with the charging, melting, and proportioning of the raw materials in the various types of furnace practice. Charging Equipment and Stock Handling. The physical equipment available for loading and weighing the stock, transporting it to the furnace, and charging it may have a major effect on charging practice. Limestone, scrap, and all other solid melting stock are charged mechanically by means of equipment described in Chapter I (see also Fig. 18, page 33). It is generally desirable to charge the scrap about as fast as the physical volume can be got into the furnace. A limiting factor may be the height to which the scrap may be piled in the furnace without deflecting the flame to such an extent that it will impinge on the roof or walls and thus damage the refractories, but light scrap may often be piled up near the roof since the flame usually "cuts it down" rapidly before impingement on any roof area can persist long enough to do appreciable harm. When the nature of the scrap and the handling facilities are adequate to meet the aim of rapid charging, little thought is given to this feature of operation. Unfortunately, at times

When F. Heuslerl found in 1898 that certain alloys containing only copper, manganese, and tin were ferromagnetic, the discovery excited a great deal of interest and led to numerous investigations. It was early found that tin could be replaced by aluminum, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, or boron without destroying the ferromagnetic nature of the alloys.2 Copper may also be replaced by silver.% All these alloys have come to be known as "Heusler alloys." The aluminum alloys apparently were the most magnetic and have been most extensively investigated. However, no agreement has yet been reached as to the source of the ferromagnetism arising from these nonferromagnetic elements. Absence of reliable quantitative data makes speculation hazardous. The value of much of the earlier work was vitiated by lack of necessary precautions against contamination, and by lack of close control of heat-treatment. It was only recently established that in aluminum Heusler alloys4 the ferromagnetism arose from a single phase, an ordered body-centered-cubic structure. With modern methods of preparation, heat-treatment, and X-ray examination, it is possible to prepare these alloys without contamination, to heat-treat them intellgently, and to determine what phase or phases are present in the finished sample. In the present investigation, a series of pure alloys in the comparatively neglected copper-manganese-tin system have been prepared, which consist of a single, body-centered-cubic structure (the beta phase) and whose compositions vary within wide limits. The magnetic saturation values of these single-phase alloys have been quantitatively determined, so that considerable data on the effect of composition on the ferromagnetism have been made available. In the course of the investigation some information on the extent of the stability of the beta phase and the nature of phases in adjacent regions of the ternary diagram has been accumulated. Anomalies in earlier data. have been explained, and alloys have been prepared that are much more strongly magnetic than any previous Heusler alloys. Previous Work In the original work of F. Heuslerl and coworkers,2 a maximum magnetic saturation value of I = 107 was found at the composition Cu6Mn3Sn, while a value for CusMnAl of I = 443 was early measured. Ross and Gray5 found a second maximum at the composition Cu2MnSn, which was much more magnetic than Heusler's original alloy. F. Heusler6 hen reinvesti-gated the system, confirmed their results,

THIS is an attempt to bring together some of the knowledge of the .coal-forming conditions obtaining during the Pennsylvanian period in the Western Interior Coal Province, to sketch briefly the present extent and character of the coals produced, and to show the beginning of cor-relation of beds over wide areas. Coals of later age than the Pennsyl-vanian are not included and, for reasons that will appear later, little attempt is made to cover the districts of eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas, and northern Texas is omitted entirely. GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS The conditions that made possible the formation of large coal beds in the United States were most favorable in the Pennsylvanian period, formerly known as the Upper Carboniferous. The geological conditions can be determined from the records, but not the reasons for them. Preceding the Pennsylvanian was the Mississippian, formerly known as the lower Carboniferous and still later as the sub-Carboniferous. Dur-ing this time, large bodies of limestone were deposited and at the close f the Mississippian they were warped upward and for along period were eroded. Then there began a period of subsidence, more or less inter-rupted at times, during which the Pennsylvanian strata were deposited (see table on page 2). " These consist of sandstones, limestones and shales, with occasional coal beds: At the beginning of the Pennsylvanian there was subsidence, which allowed the sea to extend over the eroded Mississippian surface to the north and east, extending over eastern and central Texas, a large part of Oklahoma, with a projection into Arkansas, over Kansas and part of Nebraska, all the northern and western part of Missouri, a large part of Iowa except a strip in the north, most of Illinois, practically all of Ken-tucky, northern Tennessee, most of Indiana, all of the eastern part of Ohio, practically all of West Virginia, western Maryland, the west end of Virginia, and a large part of Pennsylvania. When F. Heuslerl found in 1898 that certain alloys containing only copper, manganese, and tin were ferromagnetic, the discovery excited a great deal of interest and led to numerous investigations. It was early found that tin could be replaced by aluminum, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, or boron without destroying the ferromagnetic nature of the alloys.2 Copper may also be replaced by silver.% All these alloys have come to be known as "Heusler alloys." The aluminum alloys apparently were the most magnetic and have been most extensively investigated. However, no agreement has yet been reached as to the source of the ferromagnetism arising from these nonferromagnetic elements. Absence of reliable quantitative data makes speculation hazardous. The value of much of the earlier work was vitiated by lack of necessary precautions against contamination, and by lack of close control of heat-treatment. It was only recently established that in aluminum Heusler alloys4 the ferromagnetism arose from a single phase, an ordered body-centered-cubic structure. With modern methods of preparation, heat-treatment, and X-ray examination, it is possible to prepare these alloys without contamination, to heat-treat them intellgently, and to determine what phase or phases are present in the finished sample. In the present investigation, a series of pure alloys in the comparatively neglected copper-manganese-tin system have been prepared, which consist of a single, body-centered-cubic structure (the beta phase) and whose compositions vary within wide limits. The magnetic saturation values of these single-phase alloys have been quantitatively determined, so that considerable data on the effect of composition on the ferromagnetism have been made available. In the course of the investigation some information on the extent of the stability of the beta phase and the nature of phases in adjacent regions of the ternary diagram has been accumulated. Anomalies in earlier data. have been explained, and alloys have been prepared that are much more strongly magnetic than any previous Heusler alloys. Previous Work In the original work of F. Heuslerl and coworkers,2 a maximum magnetic saturation value of I = 107 was found at the composition Cu6Mn3Sn, while a value for CusMnAl of I = 443 was early measured. Vesta No. 4 and 5 mines supply most of the high volatile coal required for Jones & Laughlin's by-product coke plants. Until 1944 all coal produced in these mines was loaded by hand. Pressure to mechanize at Vesta was brought on by the manpower shortage in World War II, and in 1943 a decision was made to change to mechanical loading. It was the opinion of those concerned that by use of selective mining the coal would be clean enough to be processed by the existing preparation plants. At that time coal cleaning at Jones & Laughlin consisted of hand picking the larger sizes at the mine tipples and wet washing at plants located at the Pittsburgh and Aliquippa Works. A typical section of the Pittsburgh seam as it occurs at Vesta is shown in Fig. 1. The 14 to 16 in. of drawslate immediately over the coal is too soft to be used for roof and must be taken down, leaving the rooster coal just above for roof. In selective mining an attempt is made to mine the coal under the drawslate first and then load out the drawslate separately as refuse. In full seam mining slate and coal are shot down at the same time and loaded out.

IT is well known that the excellent mica from Brazil played a most vital role in World War II. Increased production from Brazil was necessary and with the assent of the Brazilian Government engineers from the United States went down to study the problem. One of the means advocated by a former Chief of Metals and Minerals Branch of the Board of Economic Warfare, Mr. Carl Schwegler, was the use of stripping machinery. On a pegmatite dike favorable for stripping, a small number of miners could produce as much mica per day as an underground mine employing many times the same number of men. TYPE OF DEPOSIT FAVORABLE The most favorable type of pegmatite for stripping is that which lies more or less parallel to the surface of the slope of a hill. Pegmatite dikes that cut directly into a hill are not suitable for stripping except where a long outcrop extends along the slope. Then just the outcrop could be stripped to some advantage. The ratio at no time should be greater than I:3; i.e., I cu. m. of pegmatite to 3 cu. m. of waste, unless the pegmatite was extremely rich throughout the dike. THE ECONOMICS OF STRIPPING When a mineral is badly needed to win a war, not too much heed can be paid to costs. The object is to produce rapidly and in quantity. Again, a deposit containing a superior grade of mica may be worked although the pegmatite is more costly to work than another deposit containing a considerably greater amount of poor-grade mica. For example: one deposit may have a little mica that will run II per cent good stain and better when trimmed and contain 2 kg. of crude mica per cubic meter of pegmatite, while another may run 0.2 per cent of good stain and better, and have a mica content of 10 kg. per cubic meter. A number of stripping projects were found in the vicinity of Raul Soares, Minas Gerais. These were sampled in the various old workings by cutting out a cubic meter of pegmatite and saving the usable mica. Because of the proximity to the surface of most stripping projects, about 34 per cent only of the mica is good for trimming. The other 66 per cent is too badly weathered to be of use. In Table I are given data collected on five properties near Raul Soares. In Table I, "value per cubic meter of pegmatite" means the value of the qualified mica obtainable. This does not include the half trimmed and splittings. By "value per cubic meter of matter" is meant the value of the qualified mica per cubic meter of material excavated; i.e. both waste and pegmatite. This is the figure that should he used to determine whether the operation will be profitable or not, as the cost of stripping is about $0.I4 per cubic meter. With new machinery not subject to breakdowns, the cost per cubic meter should be around $0.10 to $0.I5. To this should be

In the anthracite fields of Pennsylvania, mine fires occur with more or less regularity and their existence is an ever-present hazard in coal mining. In all probability 90 per cent. of the mine fires can be ascribed directly or indirectly to the ordinary miner's open lamp. Other causes may be smoking, electrical installations, gas explosions, gas feeders, and the communication of fire to the outcrops from ash dumps, culm banks, timber and brush fires. Fires in pump rooms, engine rooms, and barns have been largely eliminated as a result of the Act of Assembly, approved June 15, 1911, which provides that all inside buildings, including engine rooms, pump rooms, barns, etc., shall be constructed of incombustible materials. Smoking of pipes, cigars, and cigarettes should be prohibited in the mines and too much care cannot be exercised in preventing fires by enforcing all rules designed for that purpose. Mine fires that involve underground fighting are invariably dangerous, and all fires, irrespective of the method pursued in extinguishing them, involve property loss and expense. Each fire generally presents a more or less original problem, dependent on the particular conditions. Generally mine fires may be divided into two classes: Those occurring in inaccessible workings and those occurring in accessible workings. The methods pursued in extinguishing or controlling mine fires are as follows: (I) direct attack, (2) smothering by sealing, (3) flushing with silt or other solids, (4) flooding with water, (5) cutting off, (6) surrounding with incombustible materials, (7) digging out by stripping from the surface. Most fires arc extinguished in their incipiency by direct attack and failure to extinguish by this method is due to late discovery, lack of water, and facilities for fighting, or improper procedure in the initial attack. Should the method first pursued be unsuccessful, careful consideration should be given in determining next the method to be adopted; then the work should be carried on as rapidly as possible and under the supervision of the most competent persons. Materials and supplies should be furnished without delay and in sufficient quantities for the work to be accomplished.
