The Chivor emerald field is situated on the eastern slope of the Andes in the Department of Boyach, at an elevation of about 8000 ft. above sea level. It overlooks the Llanos (plains) of the Orinoco and is watered by many streams flowing into the Rio Meta, the Orinoco's largest tributary. The Rio Meta is navigable from the Orinoco to a point within about 50 miles of the Chivor district and may eventually prove to be the reasonable outlet for the future development of this part of the country. The topography of the district is extremely rugged and mountainous (Fig. I), the difference in elevation between two points on a mining claim 1 km. square being sometimes as much as 4000 ft. The ground is covered with dense forest growth and the available timber is suitable and sufficient for mining purposes, but it is becoming gradually depleted by Indian clearings as the country around the mines becomes settled. The many streams combined with the rough topography give good possibilities for hydroelectric power. The center of population nearest to Chivor is Bogoth, the capital of the republic and a city of some 300,000 inhabitants; the distance is two and one-half days' travel. The first stage of the journey from BogotB is accomplished by rail to Choconta, some 4 hr. travel. From Choconth the journey is made in the saddle, one night being spent in Guateque. The latter is a small town and the nearest post office to the mines, being some 10 hr. ride distant. The roads are mere bridle paths, in parts hazardous and almost impassable in the wet season. All supplies brought to the mines, other than those produced locally, are carried by pack mule; mule freight from Choconth costs 3 centavos1 per pound. The climate of the Chivor district is healthful and bracing. The wet season begins in March and concludes in November, the remaining months being dry. The annual precipitation is about 130 in. The temperature throughout the year is nearly constant, varying from about 45" F. to about 65" F. shade temperature. The rains are cold and unpleasant, and for the greater part of each day in the wet season the country is shrouded in dense mist. More than 20 years have passed since the publication of Lindgren and Ransome's report on the Cripple Creek District,1 which was made when the district was much more active and prosperous than in recent years. They concluded that the output of the district, which had reached its maximum of about $18,200,000 in 1900, would gradually decline, and their conclusion has been confirmed by records of subsequent production. Between 1905 and 1915 annual declines were partly compensated by encouraging increases, especially in 1908, 1914, and 1915; but a rapid continuous decline followed, due largely to the war and its after-effect's, until in 1922 the value of output was only slightly more than $4,000,000. It rose to nearly $5,000,000 in 1924, but declined again in 1925 and in 1926, when it was about $4,400,000, and represented ores mainly from deep levels in the Cresson and Portland mines. The profitable operations of these two mines were the principal factors leading to a study of ore at deep levels in the district by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Colorado Metal Mining Fund. The principal reasons for Lindgren and Ransome's conclusion were three: (I) the greater cost and difficulty of deep exploration; (2) the decrease in the number of veins with increasing depth, and (3) the probability that the telluride ore, believed to have formed at comparatively low temperature, would not persist indefinitely in depth. Operations since they made these statements have verified the first two, but call for some modification of the third. Rich telluride ore is being mined at a profit in the Portland mine 3000 ft. below the present surface, 07. 5000 ft. below the original surface of the Cripple Creek volcano, as interpreted by Lindgren and Ransome. The question arises, therefore, as to the number and extent of such deep deposits, and the answer, so far as it can now be given, must be based mainly on structural data, supplemented by data on the processes of ore deposition. During several experimental programs conducted at the Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy, Technical University, Aachen, whisker formation was observed when iron ores were reduced at low as well as at high temperatures. Thus, in an attempt to find the reason for the volume change taking place during reduction, iron whisker growth was observed. Whisker growth appears to be one of the important reasons for the swelling of pellets. One set of experimental observations determined that when iron forms as needles rather than as a crust on the surface of oxide, the pellets became very porous. In related experiments, the beneficiation of finely disseminated iron ores, in which the metallic iron is separated from the gangue in granular or nodular form, was achieved by a reduction-concentration method. In this process, which is conducted at sufficiently high temperatures, oxide whisker growth, resulting from the formation of volatile suboxides and a gas transport mechanism, plays a vital role in the joint deposition of SiO, and iron from the vapor stage.

Given: One large, but dated open-pit copper mine and processing plants, down about one third in production capacity in decade because of declining ore grade. Solve for: Restoration of former peak capacity without further losses during period of reconstruction. That is the problem that Kennecott's Utah Cop- per Division began solving in 1963. Most of the work went to a task force of engineers, several of whom were plucked out of line jobs and assigned to the so-called "Expansion Project" for the duration. There was no doubt from the beginning that effective cooperation between Expansion Project engineers and operators was critical to success, and personnel was chosen accordingly. This foresight paid off. The Expansion Project is all but complete, and the Utah Copper Division is returning to its rated capacity of 300,000 tons per year of copper metal.

The nucleation process for y', Ni3Ti, is shou'n to change from heterogeneous to uniform as the undercooling within the phase boundary increases. As unifornz nucleation beconres copious, (100) alignment is observed in the early stages of aging; howecer. whether or not the alignment is due to spinodal decomposition could not be determined. The presence oi a large-scale reversible segregation of titanium and not the intermediate precipitate y' may be the cause of the initial strengthening in this alloy system and the discrete regions detected magnetically by Ben-Israel and Fine. Evidence is presented for the role of dislocations in the formation at long aging tines oJ the equilibrium precipitate . ThE nickel-rich portion of the Ni-Ti phase diagram consists of a terminal fcc solid solution of titanium in nickel called y.' For temperatures below 1290°C if the solubility limit is exceeded and the temperature is high enough, the excess titanium will combine with nickel to form q, Ni3Ti, a four-layer hcp ordered structure with stacking sequence ABAC."~ Since a change in structure is involved, formation of q is slow and a metastable precipitate referred to as y' forms. This metastable precipitate is an ordered cubic phase in the unconstrained state having a structure similar to Cu3Au (LIZ) with the composition Ni,Ti."'5 From X-ray studies,8, 7 the following sequence is indicated for the precipitation reaction at low temperatures: 1) The appearance of satellites around low-index diffraction spots and splitting of high-index spots, indicating the formation of a slightly tetragonal phase in an imperfectly periodic arrangement. The tetragonal phase is y' or the depleted matrix, depending on the volume fractions of matrix and precipitate (and hence, the alloy composition); tetragonality apparently arises from coherency strains. 2) The appearance of diffraction spots from the equilibrium second phase, q. Ben-Israel and Fine'" used magnetic methods to measure the changes in matrix composition during aging, and to estimate the precipitate composition in a Ni-10.1 at. pct Ti alloy. They observed that the alloy, solution-treated at 1270°C and quenched, contained heterogeneities with discrete compositions which gradually vanished upon aging. It was suggested that y' may initially form as a defect structure with several possible compositions deficient in titanium as compared to Ni3Ti; the composition Ni3Ti develops with prolonged aging. The initial composition was Ni6Ti which would require a very large deviation in stoichiometry for y'. It was noted that at 700°C the precipitation reaction was 80 pct complete after 2 hr and that the volume fraction of second phase was 0.2 after 1 hr. Mihalisin and Decker' suggested that the equilibrium precipitate, besides being nucleated at grain boundaries, could also form at stacking faults. ~errick" examined the formation of in Ni-Cr-Ti, and suggested that a collapsed vacancy cluster within y' acted as a nucleus for intragranular q at high temperatures, 820" and 900°C. After long aging times at lower temperatures, 650" and 750°C, diffraction patterns taken from regions containing ribbons of stacking faults showed spots associated with q. Aging greatly enhances the mechanical properties of these alloys, even at high temperatures, and the metastable precipitate y' is thought to be responsible.' At 600°C the hardness of a Ni-10.1 at. pct Ti alloy increases rapidly during the first 20 hr of aging and continues to increase slowly thereafter.'" At 700°C the hardness reaches a maximum at 1 to 2 hr and then decreases.l1 In this paper the kinetics of formation of y' and the mechanism of transformation to in a Ni-Ti alloy are described. Evidence is presented that suggests that large-scale regions of titanium segregation are present initially and these may have an important influence on the initial strengthening of the alloy: these regions may be the heterogeneities detected by Ben-Israel and Fine. I) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The Ni-10.3 at. pct Ti-0.6 at. pct A1 alloy was prepared by vacuum melting. Its chemical analysis is given in Table I. A 0.007-in.-thick strip was sandwiched between foils of the alloy and placed in an open Vycor tube with titanium chips (to get oxygen) and solution-treated for ; hr at 1150°C in a Globar Furnace under a flowing argon atmosphere. Following a quench into an ice-brine mixture at -5" to -2"C, a sample to be aged at temperatures up to and including 700°C was sealed in an evacuated Vycor capsule before being put into a fused salt bath. Aging above 700°C was carried out on bare samples in a salt bath. It has been said that "the command of nature has been put into the hands of man before he knows how to command himself," and what we see about us gives particular emphasis to this observation. If this condition be granted, the vaunted boast of school and college, of the institution that had the training of this generation, and of its fathers, and of its grandfathers, the boast that education is a "preparation for life," stands exposed as a hollow claim, or as a ghastly, cynical conception of life, or else education has fallen far short of its intentions. It has been evident for some time that education was not meeting the fullest expectations of society. In recent years there has been a deal of speculation indulged in by both laity and faculty in regard to American education and American civilization, and some few and sporadic changes have been effected. Today, however, there is no longer time for mere hypothetical considerations; we are faced with certain definite facts and confronted with obvious conditions that will not wait for fine-spun theories. If educators do not put their house in order, someone else will do it for them. The trends in mineral industries education must be in harmony with this general realignment that is today visible on the educational horizon, and only as these trends are in conformity with this movement can they be called sound. Two questions, then, confront mineral industries educators: (1) What are the trends in mineral industries education, and (2) how do these trends correlate with the major educational movements of the day? Scope or Mineral Industries Education Before launching into these particulars, it might be well to define the scope of mineral industries education and to consider its present position. Mineral industries education embraces three main types of work: 1. Earth Sciences and Geography.—Geology, mineralogy, geography— courses basic to all mineral industries and to the humanities. 2. Mineral Engineering.—Mining, petroleum and natural gas—dealing with mineral producing industries. Application of earth sciences and all types of engineering to exploitation of natural mineral resources.

Mechanical properties and optical metallographic characteristics of vanadium containing 53 ppm (wt) H were investigated from, 77° to 298°K. A sharp ductile to brittle transition induced by the presence of hydrogen was observed between 238° and 223°K and a mar-tensitically formed hydride appeared at 200°K. While there appears to be a subtle relationship between the hydride formation and the ductile-brittle transition, it was concluded that the hydride per se was not sufficietzt to cause the severe em brittletnent. On the basis of the metallographic experiments and the results of a Petch analysis it is suggested that the mechanism of the embrittlement involves a reduction of the true surface energy, or cohesion, of the uanadiunz. THAT hydrogen can severely embrittle vanadium is well-documented;'-5 however, the mechanism by which hydrogen induces the observed embrittlement has not been established. It is not known whether the embrittlement of vanadium is caused by the formation of vanadium hydride or by a more subtle role of hydrogen. Until very recently6>' the solid solubility of hydrogen in vanadium at temperatures in the,range of the embrittlement was not known to a useful accuracy. In general, a severe embrittlement of the type produced by the presence of hydrogen in vanadium can be caused by changes in either of two properties of a metal. Either the yield stress of the metal is raised to the extent that plastic deformation at the tip of a crack cannot occur or the cohesive properties of the metal are reduced, at least locally, to the point at which cleavage is the natural response to applied loads. Of course a combination of these is possible. It is not known which of these properties of vanadium is influenced most by the addition of hydrogen. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the role of hydrogen in the embrittlement of vanadium. Accordingly, the solubility of hydrogen in vanadium in the temperature range where embrittlement is most severe was determined, the appearance of vanadium hydride was examined in relation to the initial ductile to brittle transition temperature, and an attempt was made to evaluate the effect of hydrogen on the yield stress and cohesive properties of vanadium. MATERIAL AND PROCEDURES Sample Preparation. The vanadium used in this investigation was prepared by the iodide refining process described by Carlson and owen.' Three ingots, 3 in. diam by 6 in. long, were cold-swaged to 0.096 in. diam, cut into short lengths, and then arc-melted under purified argon into one ingot. This process was repeated to insure a uniform composition in the final ingot. Chemical analysis of the metal is given in Table I. On the basis of work of Loria et a/ .' the following sequence of treatments was performed in order to obtain a uniform equiaxed ultimate grain structure: a) cold swage q-in.-diam ingot to 0.230 in. diam; b) anneal 6 hr at 1000°C in vacuum; c) by cold swaging reduce 81 pct in area in three steps: 0.230 to 0.187 in. diam, 0.187 to 0.150 in. diam, 0.150 to 0.096 in. diam. This sequence provided the desired grain structure after subsequent annealing treatments. Because annealing in evacuated quartz capsules resulted in contamination by oxygen, all anneals in this investigation were performed in a 304 stainless-steel chamber under a dynamic vacuum of 10- I Torr with the vanadium wrapped in tantalum foil. Prior to all annealing treatments the wires were electropolished for 1 min at 16°C in an 80 pct methanol-20 pct sul-furic acid electrolyte at 12.5 v. Following the final reduction the 0.096-in.-diam wire was cut into 2-in. lengths. A 1-in. gage section was reduced to 0.090 in. diam by electropolishing as above. Five different grain sizes were obtained by annealing the 2-in. samples at different temperatures for 8 hr to insure uniform grain size and residual hydrogen removal. THIS paper presents briefly some of the principal results of 3 ½ months field work during the summer of 1938 in the Chichagof mining district, southeastern Alaska. The report is preliminary and presumably will be followed later by a more complete report to be published by the Geological Survey. The paper is concerned principally with the structural geology of a block of steeply dipping graywacke as revealed underground in the Hirst Chichagof and the Chichagoff mines, the two principal mines of the district. The two mines have produced about $16,000,000 worth of gold and silver. The attitude of the graywacke, which is locally cut by dikes and sills of aplite, is remarkably uniform and trends about N. 62º W. The average dip is about 67º SW. The graywacke is cut by large faults, the best known of which are the Hirst and the Chichagof, whose average trends are about N. 30ºW. and average dips about 75º SW. The faults at some places split into the bedding of the graywacke and at others are deflected from their normal trends for considerable distances along the bedding. The relative movements along the faults was northwest and up at about 30º for the south- west or hanging-wall sides. The ore bodies are elongate quartz lenses in the faults. Most of the quartz is mineralized but locally large quartz masses are too low grade to be mined. The emplacement of the ore bodies appears to have been structurally controlled in large part by the intersections of the faults with the bedding surfaces. Places where the faults split or are deflected appear to have been particularly favorable places for ore deposition. There has been some post-quartz movements along the faults but it is thought that such movements have not been extensive enough to greatly modify the original positions and shapes of the ore bodies.

AT MIDNIGHT of Sunday, Aug. 27, 1922, a fire was discovered in the main shaft of the Argonaut mine, Jackson, Cal. With the excep-tion of a shift boss and two skip tenders who escaped, the entire night shift of 47 men was trapped in the mine and entombed for 22 days, when the bodies were recovered. The entombed miners made a valiant but fruitless effort to save their lives. Rescue crews toiled strenu-ously day and night for 21 days to save the entombed men, only to find they had arrived too late. From the experiences of the entombed miners and of the rescue crews, valuable lessons may be learned to prevent future catastrophes.

The handling and disposal of mine water is a much larger problem than is apparent at first glance. Many more tons of water are removed from underground coal mines in the United States each year than tons of coal. In the old anthracite region of Pennsylvania the average was around 32.7 t (36 st) of water for each ton of coal produced, while bituminous mines average about 4.5 or 5.4 t (5 or 6 st). Water encountered in the mines may come from several different sources. In mines with light cover and without a firm solid roof, rain may seep directly into the workings. This is also true of deeper mines where pillar falls have broken the roof to the surface. The top under creek beds is generally faulty and broken and water comes through the roof at this point. Deeper mines are frequently overlain by water-bearing strata and pillar breaks and faulty top can admit water, while places running to the dip often accumulate water which comes up through the bottom. In all cases, except where passing under a year-round stream, the amount of water made is usually pretty closely connected with the weather-more water during the rainy season, less in the dry, although the deeper a nine is, the longer it is before changes in rainfall are felt. Another source of water, not connected with seasonal changes, is old water, accumulated over a period of time in abandoned workings of the mine, or from flooded adjacent mines. Here the water filters through the coal, the parting, or comes up through cracks in the bottom. Similarly, core holes, drilled to prospect the property, can be a source of unexpected water and modern safety requirements for dust-allaying water at the working faces can turn a pleasant working area into a soggy mess over the weekend if the system is not properly maintained and operated. Why water must be disposed of is obvious. If allowed to accumulate, sooner or later the mine will fill up, or at least it will become "roofed" in low places, blocking ventilation and traffic. INTRODUCTION Run-of-mine (ROM) coal generally falls into two major groups, that from underground mining (continuous mining machines) and that from strip mining. Continuous miners produce a finer product and strip mining a coarser product that is crushed to produce the desired size. Further size reduction depends on the proposed use or uses for the coal. For example, for pulverized coal power plants as a rough general rule, the coal is ground or pulverized to 80% less than 200 mesh (0.075 mrn) before it is blown into the boiler furnace as a coal-air suspension. For solvent-refined coal processes, the desired size is about <30 mesh ( <0.60 mm) ; in fluidized bed uses, the coal is typically < in. ( < 1.6 mm); for Lurgi pressure gasifiers, the desired size is 1-2 1/2 in. (25-63 mm). Coal preparation plants typically work with a coarse size fraction of 6x1 1/4 in. (15Ox32mm). It seems probable that the next decades will see much wider application of coal cleaning before use and that the stages of crushing and pulverization from ROM coal to end use will be integrated with coal cleaning processes. The problem of sheet metal formability is one which has received a vast amount of attention during recent years. In spite of the great amount of study and experimental work which has been devoted to this problem, many of its fundamental aspects are still not well understood. No generally satisfactory test has been developed which is capable of providing a reasonably adequate evaluation of sheet metal formability, particularly in borderline cases. Anomalies persistently arise in which a lot of supposedly satisfactory material exhibits excessive breakage when formed. This lack of suitable technological tests greatly hinders the design of new parts and the substitution of new materials in parts of existing design, frequently necessitating considerable costly trial and error experimentation on an actual production basis. When, at the beginning of World War 11, it became apparent that mass production methods of forming would bc required in the aircraft industry if the large numbers of military aircraft needed were to be supplied, renewed attention was focussed on the problem of sheet metal formability. It was widely recognized that the formability requirements placed on sheet metals had been steadily increasing in severity through the years, especially as greater and greater emphasis was placed on streamlined designs with the resultant freer application of doubly curved surfaces. The recent advent of several new high strength aluminum alloys of more limited formability than some of the older alloys also served to emphasize the need for new approaches to the problem. It seemed evident that progress in the technology of sheet metal forming would depend to a great extent on the development of more reliable criteria for the evaluation of formability. Although the problem is admittedly very complex, the most logical approach appeared to be through studies of the fundamental material properties of sheet metals, especially under complex stress conditions simulating those prevailing in actual forming operations. Most previous investigations have failed to make full use of existing knowledge of fundamental material properties, and in many instances have attempted correlations with properties which are now recognized as being ambiguous in nature. This investigation was undertaken, therefore, with the aim of developing methods for the study of the flow and fracture of sheet meta1s under combined stresses, and of making use of such methods as might be developed in

Lead has often been suggested as a protective coating for iron and steel. Such a protective coating should possess: (1) good adhesion, (2) durability, (3) ease of application, (4) freedom from pinholes, (5) good appearance and (6) low cost, but, unfortunately, lead coatings so far produced do not have all of these characteristics. Because of the necessity of carrying out the coating process cheaply, and because lead solutions have poor plating characteristics, most of the efforts have been directed toward the hot-dipping process rather than electroplating. The hot-dipping processes using lead have not been successful chiefly because of the lack of adherence between iron and lead. In any coating process involving iron a bond can be obtained only by the formation of an intermetallic compound, the formation of a solid solution, or mechanical means. Lead forms with iron two immiscible liquid solutions, and in the solid state no intermetallic compounds or solutions. It is necessary, therefore, to employ some other element or elements as a binding agent. Tin may be used as in terneplate, or copper in the form of a thin film of electrolytically deposited metal to which the lead will adhere. Because of its physical and chemical properties, lead as a coakkg medium would undoubtedly be limited in its use to sheet and wire and then only when the article is not subject to abrasion or wear. A very large tonnage of these products is being used under such conditions and a successful lead-coating process should be a valuable contribution to the science. Two other difficulties stand in the way of successful lead coating—that of poor appearance of the weathered surface and the tendency of the lead to form pinholes during solidification. Since lead is commonly accepted as cathodic to iron, these exposed areas are ones of accelerated corrosion. At the annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in February, 1923, the Chairman of the Committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence appointed a sub-committee to work out a form of questionnaire and to collect data on subsidence and ground movement resulting from underground metal and coal-mining operations, and on ground movement and safe slopes in connection with open-cut metal-mining operations. The author was requested to take charge of the collection of data and the preparation of a questionnaire in connection with the Committee&apos;s studies of open-cut metal-mining operations. This paper is a summary of the work carried on and information received therefrom up to February, 1924. The first approach to the problem of safe slopes is to gather all information that pertains to finished slopes; in other words, the steepest economic angle from the horizontal that will stand in order to uncover the ores to be mined and be safe while the extraction of the ore at the base of these slopes is in progress. Whether or not this angle is 35" or 45" depends on many factors. The number of benches maintained to take care of falling rock and their height and width are direct functions of this overall slope. The slope is here taken to mean the angle from the top edge of the pit through the edges of the respective lower benches to the bottom of the pit. If we accept this definition of the slope, it might save some confusion as there would be a difference if one took the line from the top edge of excavation to the toe of the bottom slope. This latter slope would not be constant, but would vary with the number of benches. The depth of the various ore faces will vary, of course, depending on the deposit; Table 1 shows this to range from 50 ft. to 1100 ft. The geology is an important factor, as are the climatic conditions under which one is operating. A saturated condition in some rock structure causes rock flows; in the Panama Canal excavation, slides have run on a ratio of as low as one on ten, which is a 10 per cent. grade, or a slope of less than 6&apos; with the horizontal. Slopes as steep as 60&apos; have been noted in the Utah Copper operations, so that a wide divergence will possibly be met. Tensile tests were carried out on a! titanium containing 850, 1250, and 2700 ppm 0, and up to -500 ppm H. The tests were performed at -196", -78", 20°, 150°, and 300°C at a strain rate of -1.0 x 10??3 sec-1. Increasing oxygen content, increasing grain size, and decreasing test temperature resulted in enhanced embrittlement of the a titanium by the hydrogen additions. Metallographic observations showed that this can be correlated with the influence of these parameters on the introduction of cracks into the a! titanium by fracture of titanium hydride precipitates. CRAIGHEAD et al.1 reported that the hydrogen content normally found in commercial-purity a! titanium (60 to 100 ppm) was sufficient to cause a substantial lowering of the impact strength, and they attributed this embrittling effect of hydrogen to the precipitation of titanium hydride. Lenning et al.&apos; found that in commercial-purity a titanium there is an almost complete loss of impact strength at about 200 pprn H, which is approximately half the value needed to eliminate the impact strength of high-purity a titanium. They also showed that the presence of 3000 ppm hydrogen reduces the room-temperature tensile ductility of commercial-purity material to a value of the order of 10 pct; the corresponding hydrogen concentration for high-purity titanium is over 9000 ppm. It thus appears that the detrimental effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of commercial-purity titanium becomes evident at much lower hydrogen contents than for high-purity titanium. The main difference between the two types of a titanium might be expected to be the higher level of interstitial impurity in the commercial-purity grade. Jaffee et a1.3 studied the influence of temperature and strain rate on the hydrogen embrittlement of high-purity and commercial-purity ! titanium. In general, the behavior was the same for both materials; embrittlement was enhanced by decreasing temperature and increasing strain rate. Recent results from tests on commercial-purity a titanium containing 850 ppm O and varying amounts of hydrogen up to -500 ppm showed that the degree of embrittlement by hydrogen is intimately related to the fracture characteristics of titanium hydride precipitates.4 The present paper considers the interrelationship between the mechanical properties and micro-structural features of commercial-purity a! titanium containing 850, 1250, and 2700 ppm 0 and varying amounts of hydrogen up to -500 ppm. 1. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Three types of commercial-purity titanium supplied by IMI* were used in the investigation, and for the *Address: Witton, Birmingham 6, United Kingdom. purpose of this paper are designated Ti 115, Ti 130, and Ti 160. The principal impurity elements are given in Table I. The material was received in the form of 12.7 mm diam bars having a fully recrystallized structure. Tensile specimens with a round cross-section of 4.5 mm diam and a gage length of 15.2 mm were machined from the bars. In order to develop the same grain size (mean linear intercept of grain boundaries) in each of the three types the specimens were annealed under a dynamic vacuum of <10?5 mm Hg, Table 11. Specimen hydriding was carried out in a modified Sieverts apparatus;&apos; hydrogen was taken into solution at 450°C and after holding the specimens at this temperature for 24 hr they were furnace-cooled to room temperature at an average rate of -100 C deg per hr. By this method nominal hydrogen contents of 0, 50, 100, 250, and 500 ppm were introduced into specimens of Ti 115, Ti 130, and Ti 160 (100 ppm (wt) -0.5 at. pct). The actual hydrogen contents were calculated from the weight differences obtained by weighing the specimens before and after the hydriding treatment. Tensile tests were carried out at temperatures of -196", -78", 20°, 150°, and 300°C on a 10,000 kg In-stron machine at a nominal strain rate of -1.0 x 10-3 sec-1. Fractured specimens were sectioned in planes parallel to the tensile axis, mechanically polished to 0.25 µm grade of diamond paste, and then attack polished using a solution containing by volume 99 parts H2O, 1 part HF, and 1 part HNO3. Although the latter treatment unavoidably opened out cracks and voids visible after mechanical polishing, it did reveal the grain structure, titanium hydride morphology, and deformation twinning structure.

For several years the Bureau of Mines at its Northwest Experiment Station, in cooperation with the Mines Department. of the University of Washington, has been studying the breakage and degradation of coal. The first phase of the study was devoted to the determination of the friability of many coals of various ranks and comparison of various methods for estimating friability.&apos; A study of the relative ease or difficulty with which various coals are reduced to the fine size required for use as pulverized fuel followed the completion of this work. Baltzer and Hudson2 list twelve research organizations in the United States, two in England, one in Germany and one in Canada that are reported to be engaged on this problem; showing the general appreciation of the need for a simple method of estimating the grindability of different coals. Hardgrove,3 ho has advanced a method for estimating grindability, points out that pulverizer tests of different coals are incomplete and unsatisfactory. He compares such tests to that of a boiler test made without knowledge of the calorific value of the coal. Frisch arid Holder4 also stress the same point. They state that,

We author of this historical chapter will perhaps be criticized for limiting his subject to the history of the blast furnace in lead smelting, and especially to the part it played in the great custom ore-smelting business which for three decades or more was the means of opening up vast mineral treasures and practically dominated the mining industry in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States, in Mexico and in Canada. The men of that era shared the romance and the thrills of mining, and bore their part as pioneers in the building of the great West. The present writer was too young to participate in the first of the three decades mentioned, but immediately thereafter came under the apprenticeship of some of the men who had worked out the early metallurgical problems of the industry, became personally acquainted with most of the others of that group, heard the tales of early experiences, successes and failures, the gossip of the frontier and mining camps, from all of which there remain embedded in his mind clear impressions of the outstanding personalities of that time. That is the background against which the fifty years of intimate contact with the mining and smelting business and his own experiences as metallurgist stand out in his memory, and it is hoped that the gentle reader may understand and approve his desire to rescue from comparative oblivion the fundamentally valuable results accomplished by these fathers of the industry. It will be the purpose of this chapter first to narrate the general history of the growth of the industry; second, to pay tribute to some of the pioneer metallurgists, and third, to discuss some of the salient points of the metallurgical practice at different periods, to illustrate the technical progress of the art. The series of eight Annual Reports of Rossiter W. Raymondl,† U. S. Commissioner of Mining Statistics from 1869 to 1876, contain most of the available information about the early smelting operations in the Rocky Mountain region, and much is in the early volumes of the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. The monograph by S. F. Emmons2 though not published until 1886, contained an elaborate description of the smelting works operating in 1879. Otto H.
