In the last few years, there have been developed at the plant of the Nichols Copper Co., Laurel Hill, 'Borough of Queens, New York City, improvements in electrolytic copper refining by the series system that have materially increased the flexibility and economy of that system. The purpose of this paper is to discuss, as of interest to refiners and to those who have copper to refine, as well as to the engineering profession in general, the changes' that have taken place resulting in wider application and increased efficiency of the series system. Copper is electrolytically refined in two ways, which are spoken of as the "multiple system" and the "series system." In both systems, the electrolytic tanks are in series electrically. The McIntyre mine is in the Pearl Lake section of the Porcupine gold area. The rocks are Keewatin lavas intruded by quartz porphyries and albitite dies of Algoman age. Gold-bearing quartz veins are found in the Keewatin rocks near the porphyry stocks. The whole area has been highly compressed by forces acting along a N. 20°W. line. These forces folded the Keewatin rocks before the intrusion of the Algoman rocks, and later schisted both the Keewatin and Algoman rocks. Vein fractures were developed after the folding but before the development of the schist by the compres-sive forces being locally broken up into couples. These couples were set up by the differential resistance to deformation of porphyries and basalts, and also by the competency of the dacites and incompetency of the tuffs and fragmental rocks. During the important period of vein formation, two zones were developed—an inner productive zone in which the quartz veins are ankerite-bearing and an outer barren zone in which the quartz veins are calcite-bearing. The vein solutions originated in the same magrna that supplied the albitite dikes. Introduction The McIntyre mine, in the Porcupine gold area of northern Ontario, has passed its twenty-sixth birthday and has been producing gold since early in 1912. During this time approximately ten million tons of ore has been mined and over three and a half million ounces of gold recovered. This amount of ore would be sufficient to fill 2300 standard railway freight trains, each of 100 cars, and the gold produced, although only equivalent to a cube 51/2 ft. to the side, would weigh approximately 100 tons, a load for three freight cars. Silver has been produced in the ratio of 1 oz. of silver to every 4.4 oz. of gold, so that the total silver recovery is in the neighborhood of 700,000 ounces. The early history of the mine, like that of many others, shows that for several years it fought an uphill struggle for existence. One of the important features in winning this fight was the early recognition of some of the geological conditions responsible for the ore deposits, and the application of this knowledge in the search for ore and in the acquiring of adjoining properties. As early as 1913—only two years after the mine was opened—a geological department was organiaed. It has functioned almost continuously since that date and has demonstrated the importance

EVER since the first installation of wet-washing methods of coal preparation, the removal of the water added by the washing process has created serious technical and operating problems. The rapid development and widespread adoption of wet washing has necessitated a corresponding development of dewatering methods and equipment. The amount of water retained by coal varies with the size of the coal. The moisture that is largely on the surface of the particles is easily shaken off coarse coal; thus coarse coal can be dried comparatively easily and quickly. Fine coal presents a larger surface area than does coarse coal, so its capacity for retaining moisture is greater. In fine coal, moisture below about 5 per cent is held between the coal particles and its removal is difficult. Draining and drying of the finer sizes is a major problem at many washeries. Two common problems of coal-washing practice that are intimately connected with dewatering and drying are the clarification of washery water and the prevention of stream pollution. The first field has been studied from many angles, including the use of coagulating and settling agents followed by vacuum filters to remove the solids, and the use of sludge tanks with dewatering screens incorporated therein. In many districts, the disposal of sludges into streams has been stopped by law. The lack of space for impounding sludges has created problems of disposal in other districts. Reduction in moisture means a saving in freight costs as well as the elimination of difficulties in unloading and storing. Excess moisture in coal causes it to freeze in localities where severe climatic conditions prevail. Excess water in coals to be used in the production of coke and manufactured gas has a chilling effect on the walls of the oven or retort. Dryness of coal is important in producing good briquettes. A study of certain fundamental characteristics of liquid-oxygen explosives has been made. A discussion is given of the factors affecting the life of the cartridge and the relation between explosive strength and oxygen content. The explosive properties of L.O.X. cartridges packed with a variety of lampblacks, gas blacks, and other materials have been experimentally determined by means of the ballistic pendulum, Bichel gage, and measurement of the rate of detonation. DURING the past year, the Bureau of Mines has carried on an investigation of liquid-oxygen explosives (L.O.X.) to supplement the work described in previous publications.' The present paper gives results of the first part of this work, which was a laboratory investigation of the properties of typical combustibles used in L.O.X., and the relation of these properties to the absorption and retention of oxygen by the explosives and their explosive characteristics. No attempt will be made to describe the development of liquid-oxygen explosives, because this phase of the subject has been well covered. The L.O.X. cartridge consists of a paper wrapper filled with an absorbent combustible material that is saturated with liquid oxygen by soaking it therein. About fifty pages of Henry M. Howe's profound treatise, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," are devoted to twinning with special reference to the origin, nature and general significance of the Neumann bands in ferrite. Howe believed with Osmond and Cartaud1 that the Neumanns are mechanical twins and his careful observations leave no doubt that these straight-sided narrow bands habitually occur parallel to trapezohedral planes of form {211). Attempts to develop the structure of the bands by various methods SO that their identity could be established beyond question have not been conspicuously successful. Howe thought that they deflected slip bands. Some of the etching figures which have been developed within and adjacent to Neumann bands support the contention that they are twins. A good example of this effect in ferrite containing 0.6 per cent, of niekel and 1.3 per cent. of phosphorus, originally due to Harnecker and Rassow,2 was reproduced in the 1928 lecture before the Institute of Metals Division on twinning in metals.3 In this case, the sides of the figures might represent the traces of cubic planes laid bare by etching a properly oriented grain of ferrite, twinned along a plane of form (211). Our own observations in this direction may be represented by Fig. 1 which shows in a deeply etched cavity in the boundary region between a Neumann band and the original crystal two small crystal surfaces which resemble the faces meeting at a reentrant angle in the simple cube twinned along a bisecting plane of form (211) as sketched in Fig. 2. IT has been reported recently1 that the hardenability and toughness of forging steels may be improved appreciably by the use of complex deoxidizers containing titanium, aluminum, and vanadium. In the light of these results, an investigation of similar deoxidizers containing various hardening and grain-refining elements was proposed. These deoxidizers included three manganese-silicon-aluminum-titanium al- [ ] loys with and without boron and calcium, three titanium-aluminum ferroalloys with vanadium, molybdenum and zirconium, respectively, an aluminum-zirconium ferro-alloy, and plain ferroboron. Their approximate compositions are given in Table I, and the results obtained so far in the investigation of their effects on steel are presented in the later parts of this paper. METHOD OF USING DEOXIDIZERS The deoxidizers listed in Table I were used in three series of 0.40 per cent carbon steels, which were melted in a small basic-lined induction furnace and cast in the form of I7-lb. ingots about 2.75 in. square. The basic charge for each heat was 10 lb. Armco iron and 6 lb. of clean low-carbon sheet-steel scrap. When melted, this charge was deoxidized with 15 grams of ferrosilicon, then about 500 grams of pig iron was added to give the desired carbon content. After the pig iron was dissolved, nickel [ ] shot and high-carbon ferrochromium were added if required, and additions of 80 per cent high-carbon ferromanganese and 50 per cent ferrosilicon were made to provide the proper amounts of those elements. Aluminum was added to every heat 2 min. after the silicon, for grain-size control and preliminary deoxidation. One minute later the special deoxidizer was added to the clean bare surface of the molten steel, and 2 min. afterward the steel was poured into the ingot mold, using a hot-top and pipe-preventing compound after pouring to decrease the depth of the shrinkage cavity. In 1942, Illinois produced 106,590,000 bbl. of crude oil, or 7.6 per cent of the entire amount produced in the United States. It ranked fifth among the oil- producing states. The production for 1942 declined 20.5 per cent from the previous year's total of 134,139,000 bbl. Tie daily average production for 1942 was approximately 292,000 bbl., or 74,000 bbl; less than the 366,000 daily average for 1941. At the beginning of 1942 the daily production was 367,000 bbl. This production declined steadily to 282,000 for June and to 246,000 for December. This steady decline was caused partly by the reduction in drilling resulting from Federal Conservation Order M-68 and partly by the fact that no major pool was found during the year. Discoveries Forty new fields (Fig. 2, Table 2), 48 extensions (Table 3), and 45 additional producing zones in existing fields (Table 4) Were discovered in 23 counties in Illinois during 1942. AT the New York meeting of the Institute, February, 1914, Professor Hopkinson and Sir Robert Hadfield presented an important paper entitled Research with Regard to the Non-Magnetic and Magnetic Conditions of Manganese Steel.1 Any contribution on manganese steel by its discoverer necessarily carries with it much weight and is entitled to serious and close consideration. The momentous discovery of that alloy by Sir Robert Hadfield some 30 years ago was the signal for great activity in the field of alloy steels; and the remarkable results obtained in the last two decades probably constitute the most important modern advance in the metallurgy of steel. The authors of the paper referred to above are unable to reconcile with the allotropic theory the interesting results obtained by them in heat treating manganese steel. When they speak of the allotropic theory, however, I understand that they have more especially in mind the existence of beta iron. It is not my understanding that they question the occurrence of iron in the two allotropic varieties known as gamma and alpha. If I am wrong, I trust they will correct me. A careful consideration of the experimental results reported and discussed by the authors leads me to believe that on the contrary they can be very satisfactorily explained in terms of allotropy and that, in the light of our present knowledge, they cannot be accounted for in any other way. The physical properties of non-magnetic manganese steel described by the authors are those pertaining to iron-carbon alloys in which iron is present in the gamma condition, or, in other words, to austenite. The metal is then characterized by great tenacity and ductility and low elastic limit, while its hardness, mineralogically speaking, is not excessive, but of a special kind termed "tough hardness" by the authors. Water often enters an oil reservoir during completion or workover operations on a well and forms a partial "water block" to oil production. A mathematical study of radial two-phase flow, neglecting capillary effects, has been employed to study the formation of such a water block and subsequent re-moval by production from the well. The effects of reduced oil permeability about the well on the well productivity were studied. The fluid saturation distributions about the well during formation and removal of the water block have also been computed. Several relative permeability relations and viscosity ratios were employed. If water has invaded the formation, its influence through relative permeability effects alone can cause the following. 1. Oil productivity will be depressed for extended periods after production is resumed and will build up only gradually as the water is removed. 2. Oil injected for treatment of water blocking will delay rather than promote restoration of full well productivity by enlarging the region invaded by water. Thus, unless the specific action of chemicals contained in the oil is needed, oil injection appears undesirable. INTRODUCTION During oilwell workover operations, water may enter the oil-bearing formation from the wellbore. When production is resumed, oil must flow through the region invaded by this water. The presence of this region can cause both well productivity and oil production rate to be low and oil to be produced with high water-oil ratio for some time after production is initiated. This situation is sometimes described as a water block. The introduction of water into the formation may result in other actions which also lead to reduction in well productivity and which are also usually included in the connotation of the broad term, water block. Often considered, for example, are the possibilities of clay swelling by contact with fresh water and the formation of emulsions with the formation oil. If it is suspected that such specific actions have taken place, remedial treatments are undertaken which usually involve the injection of chemicals in oil. Since the introduction of water, even in the absence of specific interactions with the formation or oil, will cause a temporary water block (which might be misinterpreted as evidence of a more severe situation), it is of importance to evaluate the magnitude and duration of this blocking which results purely from the reduction in relative permeability to oil in the vicinity of the wellbore. It is also of interest to evaluate the effect of oil injection on the productivity of a well blocked by water in this manner. Inasmuch as this unfavorable condition may persist for some time, it may lead to premature condemnation of a workover or premature abandonment of a potentially productive pay zone. A quantitative evaluation of the influence of water entry on the oil productivity through changes in relative permeability was made by solving a radial form of the Buckley-Leverett equation. The distribution of water saturation around the wellbore during the entry of water was calculated and was followed by a similar calculation of the saturation distribution during the period of resuming production. At any stage in the removal of the invading water, knowledge of the distribution of its saturation permitted calculating the attendant loss in oil productivity. The influence of the shape of the relative permeability relationships was also evaluated by carrying out the calculations for two hypothetical cases. Further, the effect of the oil-water viscosity ratio was examined by repeating the calculations, for several ratios of unity and greater, with the same relative permeabilities. Fi-nally, results are presented to show how the length of time a well must be swabbed to resume production depends on the length of time it has been subjected to invasion by water. THE rapid increase in the use of monel metal and malleable nickel in the form of sheet, rod and tube has resulted in a similar increase in the demand for these metals in the form of castings. These castings range in size from small valves and pipe fittings weighing a few ounces to large centrifugal pumps, gate valves and marine propellers, some of the latter weighing as much as 24,000 lb. Monel metal castings are widely used in accessories for steam power plants and in a variety of chemical plant. equipment where the corrosion resistance, high strength and toughness characteristic of this metal render it particularly valuable. Nickel castings find extensive use in the construction of corrosion resistant apparatus, and are often used in conjunction with wrought nickel sheet and tube in the fabrication of equipment for handling a variety of chemical and food products, particularly dairy products. In response to this demand for castings, numerous foundries have undertaken the production of castings of these metals and have met with varying degrees of success.

THE year 1935 witnessed one of the world's oldest industries-gold mining-attain the stature of a billion dollar business. Preliminary estimates indicate that somewhat over 30,000,000 oz. of gold was pro-duced, the largest output ever recorded and exceeding the previous year by more than 11 per cent. Of this huge total the Witwatersrand field produced about 10,800,000 oz., compared with 10,480,000 oz. in 1934. Russia was apparently the stellar performer, and from incomplete data it appears that between five and five and a half million ounces were produced by the Soviets compared with 4,200,000 last year and 2,814,000 in 1933. The United States nosed Canada out of third place with a production of 3,546,000 oz. against 2,916,000 in 1934, while Canada increased her total from 2,965,000 to 3,291,000 oz. Similarly, gains of lesser magnitude were made in Australia, the Gold Coast and other countries. As a result of great activity in developing outlying areas on the Rand, and the great number of new companies building mills in Canada, Australia, the Gold Coast and the United States, the years 1936 and 1937 should see new high records, as these new producers will more than offset any decline in the older properties. The whole world has become "gold conscious" during the past three years. It has been the subject of innumerable articles by economists and others, but, unfortunately, because of their lack of actual mining knowl-edge, they have treated the production of gold as a static affair, ignoring geological and technical factors. It is hardly necessary to draw attention to the fact that the world's gold-mining industry was slowly but steadily shrinking in importance, owing to the gradual depletion of known deposits that were profitable to work at costs existing prior to 1929. The International Geological Congress at Pretoria and the League of Nations Committee drew atten-tion to the estimates of the mining experts of the various governments predicting a steady falling off in world production. I Herewith present some notes on the use of Portland cement to cement in the casing, and for plugging, to exclude water from oil and gas wells, and the methods employed. I have used my best efforts to. make each step of the operation of cementing wells perfectly clear. The information is the result of actual experience and observation. The illustrations are from original drawings made especially for this paper. Portland Cement It is not necessary to discuss here the manufacture of cement. Any established brand of the slower setting Portland cements may be purchased with the confidence that it will harden, if properly used, and exclude water from and plug wells efficiently. Setting.—By the setting of cement is meant its initial change from a soft or plastic mortar to a friable solid. After the cement has become thoroughly set it is still very weak and can be readily pulverized in the fingers. Setting is thought to be effected by the crystallizing out of the silicate and the aluminate of lime, which are soluble in water in their anhydrous form. After dissolving in the water they pass to the hydrated state, in which they are insoluble, and hence are precipitated in a crystalline form. Ordinarily neat Portland cement mortar remains perfectly plastic for from 1 to 1 1/2 hr. after mixing with water at about 70" F. A higher temperature accelerates and a lower retards setting.. Hardening.—This is due to a continual crystallization of salts from solution, and to further chemical and physical changes which develop slowly, but which continue for long periods of time. Testing.—It is no more necessary for an operator to go into the scientific testing of cement to be used in a well than to so test the pipe used. In the West, capitalists have expended many millions of dollars developing the low-grade porphyry ores of copper. Half a dozen of these great enterprises have proved to be wonderful commercial successes. They have demanded improved crushing and concentrating machinery and consequently it has been developed. Many improved methods, cheap power, superior business organization, all these have contributed to this success, but the main feature is the handling of the material in enormous quantities, on a manufacturing scale. The mining chance of "striking it rich" has been eliminated by the manufacturing certainty of handling large quantities of material of known value, which while of relatively low grade, is available in large tonnages, assuring a supply for many years' run of the mill. Then the returns on the money invested are sure. The concentration of low-grade magnetic iron ores, separating the magnetite crystals from the gangue by the use of magnets, is a field of work in which the lessons taught by the development of the porphyry coppers can be studied to advantage. Large-scale operations, and the liberal expenditure of enough money at the start to insure the most economical operations, are the means of securing the desired results. The problem is to utilize millions of tons, and we may safely say billions of tons, of now worthless iron-bearing rock and to produce from it 10,000,000 to 20,000,000 tons per year of high-grade ore carrying 60 per cent. iron or higher; to take the lean material as found in nature, varying widely in iron content, and bring it up to a uniform standard of shipping ore. At present these ores are mined carrying from 25 to 50 per cent, iron, and the shipping product is brought up to 60 or 65 per cent. Fe. If future economies of operation make it possible to extend this process so that 15 per cent. iron in the crude ore can be treated as a commercial success, the additional tonnage available will be enormous. A 15 per cent. Fe crude ore raised to 60 per cent. Fe concentrate with 5 per cent.

IT has been customary at our opening sessions, for the presiding officer to address you on the general development of one or another of our several professions, or upon some important feature of Mining or Metallurgical Engineering. It is somewhat embarrassing to his successor that our former President, Dr. Raymond, expert as he is in every one of these professions, has been accustomed to keep them all, in their turn, prominently before you. In selecting for this occasion a subject necessarily connected with iron and steel, I have thought that a review of these manufactures, with reference to some of their more pressing needs for improvement, will be more timely than a general or statistical paper. I shall endeavor to confine my remarks to a few specific defects of practice and management, and to their equally specific and more or less developed remedies. That serious defects exist ; that they must be remedied ; that the manufacture is indeed already on the verge of transition, will be generally admitted. But it cannot be revolutionized all at once, however desirable the technical results might be, for that would bankrupt the business at large. We cannot afford to pull down and rebuild all our blast-furnaces that do not make a ton of pig iron with 25 cwt. of fuel ; nor to replace all our hand-puddling furnaces with revolving ones, even if we could select the best revolver. Although the soft steels promise to supplant iron for most structural purposes, there are neither money nor present market to warrant all at once replacing our iron works, or half of them, with steel works. Since, then, these manufactures can neither standstill nor be suddenly metamorphosed, their managers are saying to one another " We must feel our way into larger development ; we must work gradually into better practice; we must improve a little at a time." * President's address on the opening of the Cleveland meeting.

13.5-1. Placer Deposits-Definitions. Placers are defined for this chapter as unconsolidated deposits of detrital material containing valuable mineral, and placer mining is defined as surface exploitation of placer deposits. Unconsolidated marine deposits containing industrial minerals, such as the very large pebble phosphate beds in Florida, pelletal phosphate beds in the Sechura Desert in northwestern Peru, oyster shell beds occurring at many places, and nodules resting in the sea floor, are not classed herein as placer deposits, though methods commonly used for mining placers may be employed for their exploitation. The natural processes that may form placers range from chemical weathering to stream, marine, and wind action, and combinations thereof, resulting in some degree of concentration of valuable mineral. One or more cycles of erosion and deposition may have occured. In relation to mining, placers include unconsolidated barren or near-barren overburden and underlying weathered bedrock. Placers of any origin subsequently may become drowned by the sea and then partly or entirely covered by marine deposits; or they may become covered with alluvium, eolian deposits, or lava. The mining of placer deposits for valuable mineral content usually is followed immediately by primary concentration using wet (rarely dry) gravity methods, succeeded by secondary concentration employing both gravity and other methods. 13.5-2. A fundamental classification of placers according to genetic types follows; some degree of concentration occurs during formation of all except saprolite and some moraines. 1. While intensive research continues to promote a more complete understanding of the potential and resistivity measurements that comprise the electric log, it is believed that consideration should also be given to translating these numerous and often widely separated findings into a coordinated and readable body of fundamental facts designed specifically for the petroleum engineer and geologist. Although provision is made through publication for a ready exchange of new theoretical concepts. it is also desirable to provide reviews and appraisals of the more established techniques and methods from the operating standpoint so that an economic and practical application may be realized concurrently with the theoretical progress. With these basic premises as a guide the author reviews the presnt state of electric log interpretation. The paper is directed not so much to the logging or research specialist as to the petroleum engineer and geologist to whom the electric log is only one of the many tools which he employs. Frequently, these persons do not have the time to follow in detail the many specialized contributions that appear and, as a consequence. are not in a position to place these contributions in proper relation to each other, or to the art as a whole. The paper reviews the basic steps in making quantitative determinations from the electric log of the amount of oil or gas present in subsurface formations and also discusses the degree of reliability of these determinations under various conditions. The paper also indicates the trend of future developments in electric logging systems and methods of interpretation. INTRODUCTION The electric log has been used about 20 years as a means for studying the formations penetrated by a well bore. The first half of this period is characterized by the development of suitable logging techniques and equipment. Although progress in this direction is continuing at a satisfactory rate, the last ten years are characterized more by an increasing interest in methods of electric log interpretation. During this period, a large number of fundamental papers have been published, expounding various logging techniques and particular phases of the interpretation problem. Many of these papers represent important contributions, and a few are classic. This paper is an effort to outline as concisely as possible and in simple terms the main course of progress in electric log interpretation. More specifically, it is the purpose of the paper to review the necessary elements and basic steps used in making quantitative determinations of water saturation from the electric log; and to point out the degree of reliability of these determinations under different conditions. It is strongly advised that the operating staffs of the drilling and exploration departments of oil companies cooperate wholeheartedly with both the electric logging service companies and research organizations in the testing and development of new logging systems and interpretation methods. One purpose of the paper is. however, to indicate the degree of caution which must be exercised in placing confidence in new techniques and interpretation methods that have not been thoroughly tested in the field. It is entirely possible to be cooperative in trying new methods and yet reluctant to believe in the results until the methods are firmly established. It is important to define the meaning of quantitative electric log interpretation. In the most general sense, an interpretation of the log has been made when the electrical characteristics of the formations, as portrayed on the log, have been translated into terms describing the formation geometry, rock type, or any other physical characteristics of the formations. The determination that the top of a sand is at a certain depth is an interpretation of the log. Structural determinations made by correlating electric logs from a given area are also interpretations of the logs. The term quantitative interpretation, however, will be used in this paper in the restricted sense to indicate the determination of the water saturation of a formation. This determination defines the fluid content of an oil and gas productive formation only if the porosity is known, and it assumes that the remainder of the pore space contains hydrocarbons. This assumption is believed to be true for most oil and gas productive formations. The quantitative electric log interpretation may he said to be a determination of the fluid content only to the extent which the water saturation, under the conditions given above. defines it. THE BASIC STEPS The fundamental steps in calculating water saturation from the electric log are: 1. Determination of the true resistivity of the formations from the apparent resistivities as recorded on the electric log.

Use of the discretized batch-grinding model for the simulation of locked-cycle grinding tests from batch-grinding data is illustrated. The simulated results were compared with actual locked-cycle experimental data for the dry grinding of dolomite. To illustrate the utility of this simulation method, a number of relationships between operating and performance parameters were generated, including relations between batch grinding and the Bond test, the production rate and the circulating load, and the production rate and the product size. A large amount of testing is done each year in the mineral industry for use with grinding unit cperations, and much of the experimental test data is obtained by the tedious locked-cycle testing procedure. In addition to being experimentally complex and requiring large amounts of sample, the very nature of the locked-cycle experiment yields results that cannot readily be interpreted. The attempts that have been made to model comminution systems during the last few years may provide a better and simpler way to obtain and analyze grinding test data; these models involve elements of both fitting to "model equations" and deterministic representations.1-1 The traditional engineering design techniques for comminution systems have relied mainly upon large amounts of industrial operating data that have been correlated with locked-cycle grinding data.',' Bond's empirical mill-design procedure involving locked cycle testing remains the most generally available method to this day. The purpose of the present paper is to show how much more useful data can be obtained from a simple batch-grinding experiment that provides information which subsequently can be utilized with population balance models of the grinding process to simulate locked-cycle behavior. These simulation results can, of course, be used in Bond's general design scheme. However, the combination of batch-grinding tests and the population balance model allows many more conditions to be considered than do single laboratory tests under specific locked-cycle conditions. The use of these simulation techniques for prediction of locked-cycle behavior represents one of the first practical applications for the simulation method in comminution.
