Analyses that include diffusion of solute in the solid phase are formulated to describe solute redistribution in dendritic solidification of metallic alloys. The analyses are based on conditions that include negligible undercooling before nucleation of solid phases, negligible increase of solute in advance of the tips of growing dendrites, complete diffusion within the liquid over distances the order of dendrite spacings, and a plate-like dendrite morphology. The classical nonequilibrium freezing equation, Cs = kCo(I - fS)k-l accurately describes solute redistribution between dendrite arms for the solidification processes considered, provided diffusion in the solid is negligible. To account for the effect of diffusion in the solid, an analytic expression is given which is similar inform to the classical expression. 172 addition, a numerical-analysis procedure is etnployed to examine in more detail the effect of diffusion both during and after solidification. The analyses are intended for application to solidification of castings and ingots to describe a) final solute distribution after solidification and cooling to room temperature (microsegregation) and b) local fraction solid as a function of ternperatcre within the solidifying casting or ingol. SOLUTE redistribution in cellular and dendritic solidification has been discussed quantitatively in recent papers'-3 and in a series of earlier work.4-6 However, none of the analyses developed have permitted close correlation of theory with final solute distribution (microsegregation) observed in castings and ingots. In this paper, discussion is given of approximations which may reasonably be made in mathematical treatment of microsegregation, and analyses are presented based on these approximations. Numerical results are given for Al-Cu alloys. In a second paper the analyses will be compared with exeriment.7 CLASSICAL ANALYSIS The classical quantitative treatment of solute redistribution within a closed "volume element" has been derived repeatedly, for example by Gulliver,4 Scheil,' and Pfann.' This "classical nonequilibrium solidification equation" is written for constant partition ratio: where Cs = interface composition of the solid when the weight-fraction solid within the "volume element" is fs (weight fraction, wt pct); k = equilibrium partition ratio; Co = initial alloy composition within the volume element (weight fraction, wt pct). INTRODUCTION THIS paper describes the application of ore-dressing methods to the reclamation of milled frit from over-spray, or waste, porcelain enamel. Frit is the name given by enamelers to a granulated glass produced by the smelting and subsequent water quenching of various ingredients capable of forming a glass, usually including a compound to produce opacity. It is the major component of porcelain enamel, and normally commands a price ranging from 7 to 12 cents a pound. In the preparation of a white enamel slip, usually 6 or 7 parts of clay, 2 parts of opacifier, small amounts of electrolytes, in some cases inorganic color stabilizers and organic dyes, and 35 parts of water are added to loo parts of frit; the mixture then is milled to a fineness of the order of 92 to 95 pct through a 200-mesh sieve. The frit forms the base of the enamel; the opacifier imparts opacity or reflectance; the clay suspends the frit while in slip form and serves as a binder' in bisque form (dry and unfired); and the electrolytes control the workability. Spraying is used commercially, in many cases, to apply the finish coat of enamel to the ware, prior to drying and firing. In the spraying operation, only about 50 pct, by dry weight, of the enamel slip adheres to the surface of the ware, the remainder forms the over-spray. From 1/2 to 2/3 of the overspray goes up the flue where it is lost or recovered, depending on whether the plant is equipped with a dust-collecting installation; the coarser portion of the overspray is collected in the spray booth. The former product is termed flue reclaim enamel, and the latter booth reclaim enamel. Although the spraying operation is done in specially constructed booths, which are partially or completely enclosed, it is extremely difficult to keep out contaminating dirt, which joins the reclaim. Some present-day large enameling plants use 20 tons of frit a day, of which 10 tons go into reclaim with a potential value of $1400 to $2400. When two-coat finish enamels were common, the reclaim was used satisfactorily for the undercoat, but the relatively recent advent of one-coat finish enamels prevented use of the reclaim because, even when blended with first-run enamels, it gave dirty finishes with poor gloss. It was thought that the pitting and specking encountered with reclaimed enamels were caused by the contaminating dirt, and that the poor gloss was caused, primarily, by the high clay content; more clay usually was added to give proper suspension properties to the slip when the reclaim was used. A clay content in excess of about 10 pct usually imparted refractoriness to porcelain enamels. A series of laboratory experiments was conducted in which oil was displaced from a porous medium by water-driven slugs of alcohols or similar solvents. The solvents used were soluble to some degree in both oil and water and covered the range of solubilities from complete solubility in oil to complete solubility in water. Displacement experiments were conducted on 2-and 3%-in. in diameter consolidated cores and 1-and 2-in. in diameter unconsolidated sand packs. The cores and sand packs ranged in length from 1 to 30 ft, and they were saturated with brine and crude or refined oils. The solvents used included ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol (IPA), tertiary butyl alcohol (TBAI, secondary butyl alcohol (SBA), n-amyl alcohol (NAA), methyl ethyl ketone, acetone and others. It was found that all of the oil present in a porous medium could be miscibly displaced by injecting a slug of mutual solvent and driving it with water. The oil-recovery efficiency was dependent upon (1) the relative solubilities of the solvent in oil and water, and (2) the distance traversed by the flood. For complete oil recovery from cores, a smaller amount of a preferentially oil-soluble solvent was required, compared to the amount of preferentially water-soluble solvent needed. The size of the solvent slug required varied inversely with the linear flooding-path length raised to the 0.65 power. Water-driven dual solvent combinations (an oil-soluble solvent slug followed by a water-soluble solvent slug) were found to effect complete oil recovery with less total solvent than any single solvent used. In these dual-solvent displacement experiments, the slug size required varied inversely with length raised to the 0.55 power. Based upon the experimental results, a theory was developed to describe the displacement of oil and water by mutual solvents, and equations are presented to predict the production history in a linear system. These equations take into account the properties of the solvents and the porous medium. INTRODUCTION Oil-recovery processes which utilize displacing fluids that are miscible with the reservoir fluids have been studied extensively in recent years. Because of the poor contact efficiency and high pressure requirements of the LPG-gas displacement process there has been considerable interest in the alcohol-water process, and a number of studies have been made on the recovery of oil through the use of solvents which are mutually soluble in oil and water. An investigation by Sievert, Dew and Conleyl indicated that the use of mutual solvents would be limited because the presence of water in a porous medium would cause a phase break in the leading edge of the displacing solvent. Their study also showed that, in consolidated cores containing. only oil, the displacement of oil by a water-driven mutual-solvent slug of tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA) was affected by the viscosity ratios of the fluids involved. Gatlin and slobod3 concluded that an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) slug acts as a miscible piston, completely displacing both oil and water until the alcohol content of the mixing zone falls below the concentration necessary to maintain miscibility. Their study was conducted on uniform unconsolidated sand packs. They concluded further that IPA could be used effectively to recover oil from a watered-out sand. In a paper by Taber, Gamath and Reed4 relating an investigation on sandstone cores, it was stated that the displacement of oil by mutual solvents, particularly IPA, was not a miscible displacement and that no improvement in efficiency could be expected with increase in flooding-path length. However, their analytical analysis of the displacement mechanism using TBA is, in fact, one which indicates that the displacement is controlled by miscible mixing. This study examines the structural framework of the Southwest for evidence of the four principal trends of lineament tectonics. It attempts to classify their intersections and compares the positions of those trends that appear most favorable with the positions of the presently known mining districts. This is a controversial topic. The author, in presenting his analysis, is aware that the study of lineament tectonics and relation of ore districts to regional structure is complicated by insufficient data and, unavoidably, by personal bias. The development of lineament tectonics has been summarized by Umbgrove.' Early attempts to fit ore districts into the Cordilleran framework were made by Billingsley and Locke, who do not refer to lineament tectonics, although their appoach is similar; they observe that heat and fluids, including the ore-depositing fluids, are most likely to rise at or near intersections of major structures where the crust is fractured, or weakened, to great depth. As a result of studies distributed over the earth-including ocean basins as well as continents— some tectonists recognize four dominant structural trends: 1) northwest; 2) northeast; 3) nearly east-west, or equatorial; and 4) nearly north-south, or meridional. Baker' proposed a theory to account for these trends and Sonder" called their world-wide arrangement the regmatic shear pattern. Moody and Hill proposed a much more complicated shear network which, although fascinating and perhaps ultimately useful, will not be followed here. In a recent review of deformation within the Cordillera, Wisser mentioned the four fundamental directions. The fact that many geologists deny the existence of the regmatic shear pattern implies that the fundamental structures are far from obvious. It may mean, also, that some geologists are not accustomed to examine regional and world maps analytically. The maps require much study, and certain features should be isolated on overlays. Even so, with the present limited knowledge, uncertainties remain. The following analysis is a qualitative experiment, subject to change as information accumulates, and should be supplemented by the western sheet of the Tectonic Map of the United States.' Many have probably gained the impression that the Cordillera of the West is oriented northwest-southeast and from this, unless experience rules otherwise, it is natural to assume that the structure likewise trends northwest-southeast. To an important extent this is true, yet anyone tracing off the western sheet of the Tectonic Map all the recorded north west-southeast structures may be surprised to see what a small part of the entire area they occupy. In southwestern U. S. (Fig. 1) the northwest-southeast structures are mostly restricted to the eastern, southern, and western parts. The eastern margin of the Cordillera from northern Colorado to the International Boundary near El Paso, Tex., is obviously determined by some structure other than northwesterly ones. In eastern Nevada and far southward toward the Gulf of California many mountain ranges, valleys, and faults are meridional. In the Rocky Mts. of Colorado, and at many places in southern Arizona, the crystalline Pre-Cambrian is foliated northeast-southwest. The Uinta Mts. of Utah trend approximately east-west, in much the same way as a broad belt of transverse, west-northwest structures—the Texas lineament of Hill",' and Ransome10 in southern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico, and southern California. It seems, then that there are four regmatic shear directions in the Southwest, but at many places they are discontinuous, and their projections must be inferred. To clarify these trends the four sets have been isolated into two systems: 1) northwest-northeast and 2) east-west-north-south (Figs. 2 and 3). Northwest-Northeast System: A number of prominent northwest-trending zones of structure are easily recognized. They are designated by circled Roman numerals, the northeast-trending structures by circled capital letters. Perhaps no two geologists would agree completely on the positions of all these belts. Names given below are for convenience only, and may be discarded where other names have priority. (I) The Sierra Nevada-Lower California belt contains the Jurassic-Cretaceous granitic massifs of the Sierra Nevada and Lower California. These

A WIDE Variety of metallurgical defects in steel have commonly been attributed to the presence of excessive amounts of hydrogen. These defects include flakes in rails and forgings, cracks in welds, and blisters in enameled ware, They have been related to hydrogen largely by circumstantiat evidence because the proper sampling and analysis of steel for hydrogen has been known to be difficult and because no general agreement has existed with regard to the relative suitability and accuracy of available methods. The need for a direct approach to these problems has been widely recognized. This general situation has been well described in the publications of the British committee on the Heterogeneity of Steel Ingots,' and current approaches to the problem were reviewed in a recent symposium of the AIME.I2 The plans described by the present authors at that meeting have now matured satisfactorily and will form the basis of this paper. The principal object of this paper will be to describe the methods of sampling and analysis which have been developed and to illustrate the usefulness and limitations of these methods by citing their application to a specific problem, The first problem selected for investigation was the behavior of hydrogen in rail steel. This was chosen because the occurrence of shatter cracks in rails has received a great deal of study over a long period of time. The defect can be controlled by the expensive procedure of slow in However, it may be hoped that a better understanding of the factors influencing the hydrogen content of rails will lead to a more efficient control of this problem. Rails provide a good starting point for a more general study of hydrogen in steel because they provide a cross-section large enough to develop cracks, Yet small enough for convenient handling and sampling. Rails were also selected because they arc made from plain carbon steel and it was felt that the initial work should not be complicated by the effects introduced by alloying elements. The considerations which determined the original planning of this study should be reviewed. The inherently complex nature of most hydrogen problems requires that a large amount of data must be collected for any particular case. This in turn means that any analytical procedure should be as rapid and simple as possible. The same objective of speed is indicated by the fact that it may finally become desirable to use hydrogen analysis in process control. It is also known that hydrogen is highly fugitive and that any procedure which facilitat~s early analysis of the sample without prolonged or irregular storage has distinct advantages. The most important previously reported methods of analysis may be classified into three general groups: (I) Vacuum fusion, (2) Vacuum extraction (without melting), (3) Total combustion.

ONE of the advantages presented by electric drive in many classes of work is the ease with which the electric motor can be controlled automatically. In a large number of cases certain features of the control are automatic-for example, the rate of acceleration may be limited automatically or the equipment may be stopped automatically at the limit of travel-but the equipment is started and ordinarily is stopped by hand. . In other cases the motion of the machinery is utilized to start, control the: speed, and stop the motor automatically, independently of any operator. A considerable proportion of the large mine hoists now in use have certain automatic features, particularly protective devices against over-winding, and, in some classes of electric hoists, devices for preventing excessive acceleration or retardation. The large automatic hoists discussed in this paper, however, are completely automatic, i.e., capable of snaking their trips without the presence of an operator at the control levers. According to circumstances, various advantages may be obtained by automatic control, chief of which are decreased power consumption', increased precision and safety of operation, and decreased, cost of attendance. The first step in the analysis of a prospective automatic mine hoist is to determine whether automatic operation is feasible at all. If men are to be hoisted, or levels changed, the attention of an operator is required for these purposes; but tinder some conditions it may be entirely practicable and advantageous to build the equipment so that, while provision is made for hoisting mien or changing levels, ore can be hoisted automatically from, any one level. If, however, an operator's attention is required every few minutes for changing levels, handling men or drills, or other work requiring hand control, it is obvious that automatic operation between times will not be of any, practical benefit.

In the Lake Superior District, the air indoors must be heated continuously during eight months of the year and occasionally during the remaining months. Incident with mining in this district, therefor?, there is need for heating many of the buildings connected with these operations. In addition to the mine buildings, that is, shops, engine houses, offices, change houses, etc., such public buildings as schools, library, and theater, when close to the mines, are often supplied from the mine heating mains. At the Copper Range Company's mines, Champion, Trimountain and Baltic, the heating surface thus supplied from the mine mains is over 50,000 sq. ft. (4645 sq. m.) which requires a steam consumption, at times, of 18,000 Ib. (8165 kg.) per hour, or the equivalent of a rate of ovcr 50 tons of coal per day (were live steam used). This figure is based on a consumption of 1/3 Ib. per sq. ft. of heating surface during the coldest weather, and provided the system is not wasting steam by blowing it to the atmosphere or into the return line on account of leaky traps, which so often is the case. Under the latter conditions, steam consumptions of three to four times the above rate are not uncommon. This shows that the cost of heating is of enough importance to he given serious consideration, especially at this time of rising prices of fuel. The power and heating value of exhaust steam arc appreciated by most engineers, and its application for such purposes is general. At our stamp mills, the exhaust from the stamps is used to operate low-pressure turbines, thus reducing the former water rate per horsepower developed by more than 50 per cent. At the above-mentioned mines, electric motors have replaced the many small steam engines, so that this supply of exhaust steam has been practically eliminated. The larger engines are compound, triple, or quadruple condensing. The hoists, however, in all cases are simple and non-condensing and of two sizes, namely, 24 by 60 in. and 32 by 72 in. (61 by 152 cm. and 81 by 183 cm.). These hoists now offer the only available supply of exhaust steam; but as this flow is intermittent and varies from extreme violence to zero, the steam so discharged cannot be

Some 30,000 people attended from 50 countries. Over 600 exhibitors brought with them a billion dollars of mining technology, ranging from tiny high-precision valves to giant off-highway trucks. Twenty-seven technical sessions with more than 100 papers covered the gamut of mining advancements. It was a grand display of industry vitality just to power the huge exhibit area required 22,000 kW of electricity each day, and support services for the exposition created more than 1000 daily jobs for local labor. Unquestionably, Las Vagas knew the miners were in town for the American Mining Congress' International Mlining Show.

Early in 1942 National Lead Co. was requested by the War Production Board to construct and operate a plant for the Government to produce magnesium by the ferrosilicon process which had been developed by Dr. E. M. Pidgeon in the laboratories of the Canadian National Research Council. A contract with the Defense PlantCorporation was concluded in May 1942 and Magnesium Reduction Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of National Lead Co., was formed to carry out this project. The capacity of the plant was rated at I0,000,000 lb. of magnesium per year, equivalent to an average production of about 14 tons per day. The Process The process, in brief, is as follows: The raw materials are dolomite and ferro-silicon, 75 per cent grade. The dolomite is calcined, the calcine and ferrosilicon are ground and mixed and the mixture is briquetted. The briquets are charged into tubular retorts of chrome-nickel steel set horizontally in a furnace with the open ends projecting outside the front wall. The retorts are then closed and evacuated. Magnesium is liberated according to then reaction 2(MgOl CaO) + Si = 2Mg + zCaO, Si% It is distilled from the charge and con- densed on a removable sleeve in the throat of the retort. Sodium and potassium, if present, are also liberated, distilled and condensed on a "sodium condenser" in the end of the retort. At the expiration of the distillation period the retorts are discharged and the cycle of operations is repeated. For the rated daily capacity of 14 tons of magnesium there are required approximately 170 tons of dolomite, equivalent to about 85 tons of calcine, and 16.5 tons of ferrosilicon. The retort residue, a bulky powder which at present is waste, amounts to about 87 tons. Choosing the Site The investigation to select the location of the plant was conducted by the Research Laboratories of National Lead Co. This work included geologic and economic surveys of a number of districts, examination of dolomite samples by chemical, spectrographic and petrographic methods and large-scale tests of dolomite from several of the more promising localities. in the last-named tests 2-ton samples were put through the ferrosilicon process in the pilot plant of the Canadian National Research Council, under the guidance of Dr. Pidgeon. The conclusions drawn from the investigation, in regard to the quality of dolomite to be used in the ferrosilicon process, were: First, the dolomite should contain not less than 21 per cent MgO and not more than 2 per cent acid-insoluble material. Vague references to tin-deposits in Mexico are scattered throughout technical literature, and that country has been looked to as a likely source of a part of the world's supply of till at no very distant date; but thus far nothing but occasional small lots have come forward, so that the notion has arisen that these mines are either mythical or unworkable. So far as I am aware, there has not yet been published any description of the tin-deposits of Mexico except a few brief references; and this paper, based on a study of them made in 1892, is therefore offered.

A characteristic property of bituminous coal is that upon being heated the coal becomes plastic, evolves volatile gases, and finally solidifies into coke. This fundamental characteristic is of utmost importance and is utilized in the production of the high-temperature coke upon which the steel industry is so dependent; but from the standpoint of operation in the domestic underfeed stoker this coking tendency seriously interferes with efficient combustion. When the coke formed has too strong a structure, certain difficulties result, such as low rate of burning, slow response to heat demand, and, in extreme cases, extinction of fire. The plastic mass prevents uniform distribution of air through the fuel bed and, with strongly coking coals, large dense pieces of coke are produced which have much less reacting surface than was possessed by the original coal. In both ignition and combustion of solid fuels, the extent of the reacting surface is an accelerating factor. Poor combustion permits a surplus of fuel to accumulate in the furnace because the rate of feed and the rate of combustion are not in equilibrium, and this produces an unbalanced condition detrimental to continued automatic service. In order to bum strongly coking coals satisfactorily in a conventional stoker during the three requisite types of operation—continuous, intermittent and hold-fire, frequent attention is necessary. Domestic stokers are defined by the industry as residential stoker heaters that burn 60 lb. of coal or less per hour. With a few exceptions, these units employ the underfeed principle of combustion in which both air and coal move in the same direction up and through the fuel bed. Domestic combustion equipment has difficulty in meeting the problems presented by the several variations in ash and volatile matter, in ash-clinkering tendencies, in coking properties, and in the particle size of bituminous coals. The work of Bituminous Coal Research Inc. at Battelle Memorial Institute has shown that, of these, coking characteristics and the clinkering tendencies have the greatest effect upon the operation of the conventional clinkering type of stoker. Typical coke formations in a clinkering type of underfeed domestic stoker are illustratcd in Fig. I, which shows (A) the ideal fuel bed obtained with a noncoking or free-burning coal; (B) the type of fuel bed formed with a coal that produces a weak coke; and (C) the type of fuel bed obtained with a strongly coking coal. C is characteristic of the fuel bed developed when the average Pennsylvania bituminous coal is burned in an underfeed stoker of conventional type. It is apparent from these pictures that the formation of coke trees will seriously interfere with the efficient automatic combustion of Pennsylvania bituminous coals.

In order to bum strongly coking coals satisfactorily in a conventional stoker during the three requisite types of operation—continuous, intermittent and hold-fire, frequent attention is necessary. Domestic stokers are defined by the industry as residential stoker heaters that burn 60 lb. of coal or less per hour. With a few exceptions, these units employ the underfeed principle of combustion in which both air and coal move in the same direction up and through the fuel bed. Domestic combustion equipment has difficulty in meeting the problems presented by the several variations in ash and volatile matter, in ash-clinkering tendencies, in coking properties, and in the particle size of bituminous coals. The work of Bituminous Coal Research Inc. at Battelle Memorial Institute has shown that, of these, coking characteristics and the clinkering tendencies have the greatest effect upon the operation of the conventional clinkering type of stoker. Typical coke formations in a clinkering type of underfeed domestic stoker are illustratcd in Fig. I, which shows (A) the ideal fuel bed obtained with a noncoking or free-burning coal; (B) the type of fuel bed formed with a coal that produces a weak coke; and (C) the type of fuel bed obtained with a strongly coking coal. C is characteristic of the fuel bed developed when the average Pennsylvania bituminous coal is burned in an underfeed stoker of conventional type. It is apparent from these pictures that the formation of coke trees will seriously interfere with the efficient automatic combustion of Pennsylvania bituminous coals.

AIR has been cooled, heated, washed; humidified and dehumidified for many purposes and in many industries. At a number of metal mines air is conditioned to reduce the high humidity and unbearable heat found in deep workings, and at some mines air is washed to allay siliceous dust. Steam is introduced into the intake air at many coal mines, particularly in winter, for the purpose of keeping loose coal dust so moistened that the hazard of an explosion is lessened. This paper will describe a further successful application of air conditioning in a coal mine, where, for over three years, all intake air has been cooled to a constant temperature for the sole purpose of preventing roof falls.

IN 1923 a Western mining company was experimenting with the device of an inventor designed to locate buried ores by radio. Because the progress was slow and the results were confusing, the company began to doubt the usefulness of the method and invited me to review the whole question of the application of physics to ore detection. I was fortunate in securing the cooperation of several physicists who had worked with me during the war on the problem of submarine detection. This group has been increased and has been studying the problem of physical exploration for ores since that time. It was evident that the problem is a big one, with many angles of approach. Its general features may be set down, in rough outline, as follows: The soils, rocks and ores hidden beneath the surface differ one from another in many respects. These differences may be made to furnish a clew for the physicists working from the surface. To bring these differences into action the physicist creates some kind of an effect which penetrates into the ground and is distorted and reflected when it meets boundaries between different sorts of underground structure. In other words, he sends a message down, and the rocks and ore send back signals in reply. In picturing this process, we should not regard the ground as dense and impenetrable. The kind of messages used pass through the earth about as readily as a sound wave travels the air. If, then, the fundamental procedure is to shout down questions in the hope that an orebody will hear and answer back to us, it is clear that a large part of the expert's study must relate to the kind of questions best suited to the temperament and intelligence of orebodies. It will be easier for the ore to reply to some of our questions than to others, and it is for us to find the right questions. In certain cases, we are spared the necessity of using a messenger; because nature has already provided one. For example, we already have a terrestrial magnetic field which auto-matically and continually conveys messages from underneath. Heaving in roads built on the Mancos Shale is a serious problem in east-central Utah. Heaves are expressed as local bumps, general rises and severe cracking of the pavement. The heaves usually occur in shale road cuts and generally show a seasonal cycle, which reaches a maximum development in the winter. The presence of certain salts, absorption of moisture and physical properties of the subgrade materials were considered, in Utah, to be the main factors in the heaving mechanism. Work done on similar problems elsewhere and studies conducted by the author indicate that the latter two factors are the most important. Results of this investigation indicate that heaving areas are associated with slaking shale or expansive clays, with and without salts present. Laboratory studies show that the initial moisture content of remolded samples and the desiccation history of un- disturbed samples have a major effect on swelling. Swell tests on compacted samples at various temperatures indicate that water has more influence on swell than temperature, except for samples containing sodium sulphate, which swelled with decreasing temperature. Chloride salts inhibited swelling. Tests on shale cores indicate that the stability of slaking shale can be preserved by maintaining its original moisture content. It is concluded that shales and expansive clays, when exposed in road cuts, become desiccated and are subject to expansion when moisture is subsequently available. The seasonal cycle of heaving may possibly be explained by the annual moisture excess and deficiency. To minimize the problem, freshly exposed shale should be kept wet, and the thickness of the subbase and base courses should be increased. The Utah State Department of Highways has been plagued for many years with a distressed condition that develops in roads constructed on the Mancos Shale. THE occurrence of gold, gold-silver, silver-lead-zinc ores in the post-Cambrian sediments in the Black Hills of South Dakota, and their genetic relationship to the Tertiary intrusives, is well known and accepted, but the occurrence of gold in the pre-Cambrian rocks at the Homestake mine, which underlie this Tertiary gold mineralization, has given rise to differ-ences of opinion as to the period of major gold introduction into the older rocks. Fig. 1 illustrates. the distribution of mineralization along the axis of the Tertiary uplift in both pre-Cambrian and post-Cambrian rocks. The following possibilities have been presented: 1. The Homestake gold deposit was formed in pre-Cambrian time and the deposits in the overlying Cambrian sediments formed during Ter-tiary time. 2. The Homestake lode existed at the beginning of Cambrian time, but was enriched by the passage of Tertiary auriferous solutions. 3. The Homestake lode was represented by pre-Cambrian quartz-chlorite sulfide mineralization, very low in gold content and the gold superimposed on the older nearly barren mineralization during the Ter-tiary metallogenic epoch. 4. The sulfides and sulfarsenides as well as gold were deposited in both pre-Cambrian and post-Cambrian rocks during the Tertiary period. Those favoring the first proposition feel that the question is pretty well settled, while the proponents of the second theory are more flexible in their view, feeling that the amount of gold introduced in either period is still an open question. The third and fourth theories, with some modifi-cations, are supported by the proponents of the Tertiary theory, who feel that the evidence strongly favors that period. The following pages are intended to present the evidence and to give the reaction of various observers with my own comments and conclu-sions; also, the accumulated facts of observation gathered over a period of close association with the area under discussion, beginning in 1919.

THE Tom Reed Extension and Big Jim mines of United Eastern Mining Co. are situated in the Oatman district, Mohave County, Ariz., about 28 miles southwest of Kingman, the nearest railway point. Articles descriptive of the mine surface plant, mill construction, and plant operations have been written by Otto Wartenweiler1, the designing engineer; Wheeler 0. North,2 when he was assistant general manager for the company, and Earle M. Bagley, mill superintendent.3 The last article covers average costs for the full time the mill was operated. The geology of the mines is described by F. L. Ransome4 of the United States Geological Survey. Production was started in January,. 1917, and the known orebodies were exhausted in May, 1925, showing a life of seven years and five months. On account of the comparatively short life and the fact that stoping operations were confined to two orebodies, little experimenting was done with mining methods. The two orebodies were in what is generally called the Tom Reed-United Eastern vein, which occupies a fault fissure having a normal displacement of several hundred feet. Seven or eight very productive ore shoots were mined along this vein in a distance of 1 ½ miles, the two worked by the United Eastern being 1 mile apart. The maximum dimensions of the Tom Reed Extension ore shoot were height, 750. ft.; length, 950 ft.; thickness, 48 ft. The vein structure varied from a solid quartz-calcite filling to a series of parallel stringers separated by andesite. From this body, 511,976 tons of ore were mined. (Fig. 1.)

The use of minute boron additions to steel has been given considerable attention in recent years. Comparisons made between boron-free and boron-containing heats of otherwise identical analysis have indicated, beyond a doubt, the potent effect of boron for increasing hardenability. The actual hardenability increase has been expressed as a multiplying factor, or in terms of the percentage of other alloying elements boron might replace. The present study presents the results of a systematic survey of the use of boron as an addition to two types of alloyed steels and as a replacement for various percentages of molybdenum in these steels. Both cast and wrought steels of the two basic compositions were prepared. Molybdenum, because of its scarcity at the time the investigation was started, was selected as the element to be replaced by boron. Attention was also given to the effects of boron on other properties of the steels, particularly their notched-bar toughness, to investigate other advantages or limitations of this element as an alloy addition. Experimental Work Steels Investigated The two basic compositions used in this survey of boron as a replacement for molybdenum are given in Table I. Each of these base steels, both cast and wrought, was made with molybdenum contents of o, 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, or 0.40 per cent, the total comprising 20 steels. In addition, each of these 20 compositions was prepared with boron additions in amounts of o.oo15, 0.003, and 0.006 per cent as ferroboron; and in amounts of 0.002 and 0.005 per cent as two commercial intensifier alloys, designated alloys A and B. The boron-treated steels totaled 100, and the entire series 120. Test Procedure Each steel was melted as an individual heat in a 50-lb., magnesia-lined induction furnace.
