While tunneling in Europe has been a tradition for centuries, many companies and countries have embraced tunnel innovation with considerable vigor and creativity. Indeed, local needs and site conditions have provided the initiative for improved means, methods, materials and equipment to complete progressively more challenging projects. Many recently completed tunnels have expanded tunneling technology and contributed to the development of highly specialized and productive equipment ? such as the mixed-mode tunnel boring ma-chine (TBM) presently in operation at the SOCATOP A- [ ] 86 road tunnel and the high-pressure slurry TBMs for the Westerschelde Tunnel in the Netherlands and Hollandsas near Malmo, Sweden. This paper describes some of the key technologies employed by European tunnel builders and designers including the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), advanced earth pressure-balanced (EPB) machines, pres-sure-faced (slurry) tunneling machines as well as ?hybrid? or mixed-mode TBMs. While these tunneling methods and equipment generally involve significant equipment investment, they may also involve highly trained, experienced and specialized tunneling and support crews as well as materials and tools specifically developed to supplement or complement tunneling performance. For example, mechanized pipe arch placement substantially improves ground support measures and NATM advance and on larger tunnel cross-sections.

The purpose of this report is to clarify the interpretation of some phases of previous progress reports5/ on the use or omission of stemming that have been brought to the attention of the authors by readers. As the stemming problem was approached from an entirely disinterested viewpoint and the data were presented impartially, results of investigations published in previous reports5/ were obtained under a definite set of conditions and procedure, and they may of may not be duplicated under different conditions and procedure in actual mining practice. Final conclusions regarding the use or omission of stemming in blasting have not been reached pending completion of all aspects of this investigation.

The extra information brought by further drilling may seem necessary to achieve control over block grades if elementary estimation techniques are used. However a geostatistical study of an Australian deposit shows that better estimation techniques at the end of the first drilling campaign are sufficient to achieve required control.Subsequent drilling would be essentially wasteful.

"SynopsisThe global resources and commodities market has become highly competitive. While southern Africa’s abundance of minerals resources is still unrivalled, it has lost considerable dominance in terms of production output. The sustainability of southern Africa’s mining industry is increasingly becoming dependent on its ability to manage the performance of its operations well. A valuable tool for monitoring and managing performance is the use of key performance areas (KPAs) – which are those areas of performance that are reflected explicitly or implicitly in the vision and strategies of an organization and reflect the critical success factors of the organization. This paper is a review of key performance areas in the southern African mining delivery environment. The KPAs discussed in this paper have been identified by comparing KPAs of the several mining houses engaged in surface mining operations in southern Africa and then extracting those KPAs that are common to most of them. Although the authors support the view that each organization should develop KPAs to specifically fit its needs, the study reveals that five KPAs – safety and health, costs, product quality, fleet management, and delivery should form a default list that covers the key areas that any organization should consider when choosing KPAs. KPIs are those subsets of KPAs that we measure in order to manage KPAs.IntroductionThe global resources and commodities market has become highly competitive. Spodumene was recovered from pegmatite by flotation in laboratory and pilot-plant tests using an anionic collector emulsion. A similar process applied to beryl pegmatite gave encouraging results.INTRODUCTIONOver the past two decades lithium and beryllium have aroused increasing interest in the metallurgical world. Both these light metals have potential uses in nuclear shielding and cooling and in lightweight alloys, and there is a growing demand for lithium chemicals for ceramics, air conditioning and lubricants. The use, technology and history of lithium has been surveyed by Schreck (1961).For many years, the only commercial production of lithium and beryllium was from pegmatite deposits amenable to hand cobbing. The most important minerals of these ores are spodumene and beryl, which are respectively lithium aluminium silicate and beryllium aluminium silicate. Norman and Gieseke (1940) investigated the treatment of lithium ores by froth flotation. The process of flotation of the pegmatite constituents away from the spodumene was applied commercially in 1951, and the operation has been described by Goter, Rainey and Hudspeth (1953). Subsequently, the flotation of the spodumene from the pegmatite was studied by Munson and Clark (1955) and Browning and McVay (1961), and this method has superceded the reverse flotation process commercially. Muskett, Tasker and Hobson (1962), in applying the method of Browning and McVay in pilot-scale tests, reported difficulty because of activation of quartz and felspar by iron salts introduced during milling of the ore.The flotation of beryl, reported by Ashton and Weir...

At Namdeb, submerged beaches are earmarked for sampling and future mining and various sampling configurations are tested for optimality through the use of spatial simulations. For the creation of these virtual orebodies, basic statistics and variograms are needed, but in this specific instance no data exists from which the necessary parameters can be determined. The best that can be done is to use proxy data from onshore beaches, with adaptations where needed. The reworking of raised beaches during periods of rising and falling sea levels in some cases destroyed the internal beach structures, and it is very difficult to determine the variograms. A method is proposed whereby simulated annealing is used to adjust the sample locations to align the data pertaining to beach crests or cliff lines, thus improving the variogram structure along the shoreline in the direction of the highest geological continuity.

1. This investigation shows that the most important beds in Claiborne County, from the standpoint of present production and reserves, are the Coal Creek and Jellico. Together, they contain 69 percent of the known recoverable reserves in the county. Reserves in five other beds are tabulated in this report; in order of quantity of reserves, they are: Blue Gem, Lower Pioneer, Pewee, Big Mary, and Rex. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 60 million tons, as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 55 million tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

The objective of this study is "to assess the impact of surface mining on soil compaction in the Midwest". The study revolves around a unique field sampling program targeted at four mine sites utilizing four distinct types of soil movement of midwestern prime land. Through the preparation of a final report for use as a guidebook, an assessment is made of the degree to which surface mining operations contribute to the soil compaction problem. The final report is formulated through the use of field study data as well as information gathered in an intense literature review. The final report centers on applying collected data to practical field applications. Soil sampling on the four mine sites centers on a comparison of natural and replaced soils for moist bulk density. This characterization evaluates changes in density and texture throughout the soil profile to a depth of 48 inches. Fertility of the topsoil is also assessed for natural and replaced soils. During field sampling and observations, a base of information has been gathered to compile a case study on each mine site. The report accesses the regulations in the prime farmland areas through the use of a matrix. The regulatory matrix allows easy access of mining personnel to State and Federal regulations.

Determining the cutability and mechanical properties of rocks is vital for the feasibility studies of a mine or tunnel projects. Many scientists have investigated the correlation between these parameters in order to predict specific energy (SE) and other important rock cutability properties for many years. On the other hand, textural properties of rocks have been quantified in detail by Howarth and Rowlands (1987). Hence, it was possible to correlate mechanical and textural properties of rocks by using a parameter known as the texture coefficient (TC). The main objective of this study was to use the test results taken from a research project carried out by Bilgin and Shahrair1tocorrelate the mechanical and cutability properties of rocks with textural properties of rocks. For this purpose, uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), uniaxial tensile strength (UTS), cone indent or (CI),point load index (PLI), unit volume weight (?), porosity, SE, and normal and cutting force values, were correlated with textural properties of rocks. Hence it was possible to make illuminating interpretations about the relationships between the mechanical and cutability with the textural properties of rocks. Powder metallurgy has been developed rapidly in the last twenty years by overseas metallurgists. The technique of making the powders and their subsequent pressing and sintering into useful forms has' only been introduced into Australia under the stress of war-time economic conditions.The technique involved has very little in common with our usual methods of fabricating engineering alloys by melting the ingredients to a homogeneous mass, followed by casting to shape or casting to ingot form and shaping by application of pressure-so-called mechanical working. On the other hand, the technique includes operations, such as milling and sizing, familiar to the primary metallurgists.The compacting of metal or other powders finds important application in two outstanding fields of engineering production: (a) in making porous bearings and contact brushes, in which such a material as powdered graphite can be incorporated; (b) in making cutting tool tips of hard -carbides, which have a melting point too high to make casting feasible, and which would be too brittle in the cast condition in any case. In both these cases; the final article can be made of the desired shape and size (subject to shrinkage allowances) whilst the compact is in a soft and readily machined condition a consideration of great importance in connection with the hard carbides.In order to develop the necessary equipment and technique and at the same time to assisil in the war effort, it was decided to divert the research work of the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne to the problems associated with the production of hard carbides from local raw materials and the sintering of such into tips for cutting tools. Since this work was started at least two industrial concerns have started to produce these materials in the Commonwealth.The work. to date has included (a) the purification of crude cobalt oxide from Risdon and the reduction of this to metal Particles of less than 10 p. diameter; (b) the production of tungsten powder from King Island scheelite and its conversion into tungsten carbide with particle size less than 4 p. diameter; (c) the sintering of the latter product, using the former as a bond; (d) the production of titanium carbide from titanium dioxide; (e) the separation of columbium and tantalum oxides from a Northern Territory tantalite, and the conversion of these into the respective carbides.

Deep level block caving as a mining method is becoming more popular due to the fact that it is the lowest cost per ton underground extraction system. However, many block caves do not achieve their full potential due to draw horizon instability. In this paper five design rules are given to overcome this problem. The design rules described are applicable for slusher and trackless block caves where the operational depths exceed 500 metres.

The only simple sulphide mineral of antimony of importance is stibnite, SbS3, containing 71·8% antimony when pure. It is lead-grey, has a densityof 4·5 to 4·6 and melts at 546°C. It is both friable and sectile (Hardness 2 on Moh's scale) and, as a result, slimes very readily during milling.It is commonly associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite other minerals occurring with stibnite in minor quantities are chalcopyrite, galena, and scheelite. The latter mineral occurs in sufficient quantity at the Yellow Pine Mine, Stibnfte, Idaho, to justify the production of a scheelite concentrate.Stibnite mayor may not contain gold. Other minerals such as pyrite or arsenopyrite may contain gold. At Wiluna at the main mine nearly all the gold is asociated with arsenopyrite the stibnite being almost free from gold, whilst at the Moonlight Mine both arsenopyrite and stibnite carry gold.The mineral, tetrahedrite, which is a complex sulphide of copper and antimony; must also be considered an economic source of these two metals.Part of the copper may be replaced by iron, zinc; silver; or mercury, whilst part of the antimony is often replaced by arsenic.CLASSIFICATION OF ANTIMONIAL GOLD ORESFor the purposes of this paper antimonial gold ores may be conveniently classified as follows: CLASS 1. The beneficiation of heavy metal oxides, such as iron ore, is usually performed with heavy medium separation in cyclones, static baths and lately with Larcodems. Atomized ferrosilicon is most suitable as a heavy medium at densities above 3600 kg/m3 whereas a mixture of milled and atomized ferrosilicon is suitable at densities below 3600 kg/m3. When operating a beneficiation plant at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3 the quality of the ferrosilicon particles is an important factor that influences the control of the beneficiation process. Therefore, it is important to know how the rheology would be affected by the ferrosilicon quality as it also influences the control of the process at these elevated densities. Background The Kumba Resources Sishen Iron Ore Mine in South Africa produces 26.5 Mt iron ore per annum from its beneficiation plant. The ore body consists mainly of laminated and massive type hematite ore that is crushed down to ?90mm before being beneficiated by means of a combination of Wemco drums, Larcodem and dense medium cyclone separators. The need for higher densities When the percentage of high-density gangue2 is higher than normal in the run-of-mine (ROM), a higher separation density is necessary to produce a product to specification. Certain ore types of this quality in the Sishen reserves require a separating density higher than 4000 kg/m3, whereas densities would normally average 3600 kg/m3 when beneficiating ores of normal high-density gangue content. Sink and float tests conducted on the ROM material at Sishen revealed some interesting characteristics. In the waste fraction, (density < 3600 kg/m3) it was found that the %Fe was <21% (Fig. 1). Similarly, for the product fraction (density >3000 kg/m3), the percentage Fe varied between 35% and 67.2%. The bulk of the material (88%) actually had a density greater than 4000 kg/m3 and a Fe content that varied between 63% and 67.2%. At a density interval of 3600 to 4000 kg/m3, the Fe content varied from 37% to 60% with an average of 45%.

In an environment of accelerating capital costs, limited capital availability and strongly cyclic metal prices, there is a difference between a robust mining and processing operation and one that would maximise shareholder returns in an idealised world. A higher cut-off grade policy is likely to improve operating margins and may reduce the scale of operations and thus limit capital exposure. Middle Proterozoic sulphide ore mineralisation occurs in isolated blocks of the NE-SW trending Delhi fold belt composed of Delhi Supergroup rocks. The Ajari-Basantgarh-Pipela belt forms part of the longest, widest and westernmost tectonic unit of the Delhi fold belt and consists of amphibolites, metapelites, quartzites and carbonates. The metapelite lenses and associated amphibolites host pyritic copper mineralisation. Mineralisation takes the form of sheet-like bodies consisting of ore lenses of various sizes interlayered with host or associated rocks. Massive, banded and disseminated varieties of ore are found. Pyrite is dominant with subordinate chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Pyrrhotite, galena, cubanite, mackinawite, marcasite and freibergite constitute the minor minerals. The characteristic features of the ores suggest a possible correlation with Besshi-type deposits, and the closely associated amphibolites are interpreted as low-K tholeiites of a fore-arc setting

So you want to install 2,600 augered cast-in-place piles, about 155,000 lineal feet, in 33 working days? It can be done. The Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG) decided to build a combined cycle power plant in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. PSEG selected Fluor Constructors Indiana, L.P. to design and build the plant. Fluor Constructors, in turn, selected Richard Goettle, Inc. to install the piles. The initial plan was to install the 2,600 piles in 33 days, working six (6) ten hour days per week. After successfully installing and performing four pile load tests - up to 300 ton capacity - we set out to complete the work and meet the aggressive schedule. After three weeks of installing an average of 75 piles a day with three drill rigs, Fluor relaxed the schedule because we were so far ahead of their projected construction sequence. We elected to continue drilling on a ten-hour day, five days a week schedule. In all, we installed nearly 2,800 piles, totaling 175,000 lineal feet, in about 47 days.

The successful installation of long piles driven into very dense sands relies on the occurrence of the reduction in local friction with increased pile embedment, a phenomenon known as ?friction fatigue?. The underlying mechanisms controlling friction fatigue are poorly understood, with some design methods including an adjustment for the influence of pile diameter while others do not. This paper back calculates the installation resistance of 0.356m to 2m (14in to 78in) diameter open ended piles driven into very dense sands using wave equation analyses. Cone penetration test data are used to link soil properties to installation resistance. The study illustrates consistent interpretation of a variety of case histories of open ended piles driven in very dense sands using newly developed analysis techniques and normalized parameters. Results provide information on methods for incorporating friction fatigue into drivability studies as well as a discussion of mechanisms related to pipe pile installation resistance in sandy soils.

Intrinsic remediation is the effect of natural attenuation mechanisms - dilution, dispersion, sorption/precipitation and biodegradation - reducing contaminant concentrations in ground water to specified levels at predetermined compliance points in the aquifer. Current monitoring and modeling for post closure was used to assess the current and long-term potential of intrinsic remediation of contaminated seepage originating from a large reactive (sulfidic) tailings impoundment near Questa, New Mexico. It is concluded that the natural attenuation mechanisms of precipitation within the tailings (as a result of buffering) and dilution/dispersion within the aquifer are currently active and likely sufficient to reduce contaminant concentrations to below state standards in the long-term. Other natural attenuation mechanisms such as sorption and biodegradation within the receiving aquife4s) were not assessed here, but are likely further reducing contaminant concentrations. Active interception and recovery of the seepage water is being maintained until monitoring demonstrates that intrinsic remediation has successfully achieved the level of water quality control required.
