"Geochemical characterisation is done based upon the geology and metallurgical batch testing prior to commencement of the operation of the plant.  Tailings repository design is based upon geochemical assessment of the waste material, as well as the geomechanical issues associated with storing the waste. The resultant conceptual and detailed design is incorporated into the environmental impact statement (EIS), upon which mine approval is based. The entire environmental monitoring and harm mitigation program, which is usually a condition of the Mine Lease approval, is based upon the applicability of the original characterisation.Tacit to this process is that there is no change in the geochemistry of the tailings, i.e. no change in the implications for acid & metalliferous or saline/neutral mine drainage (AMD/SNMD) generation. But any changes in milling and processing can have a substantive impact on the geochemical behaviour of the tailings metallurgy, and potentially render an operation non-compliant within the conditions of the mine license.Environmental and statutory approval implications for continuous improvements of metallurgy need to be understood because unintended consequences could cost more than the benefits of the improvement, and in some cases cost more than all the profit made from the mine.  Examples uncovered during audit and consultant practice will be presented together with a process to ensure implications for adverse environmental harm and license conditions are fully considered.*This paper is only available for individual download. CFA piling is a ?blind? construction process that relies heavily on the rig instrumentation to produce sound piles. If the data measured and recorded during construction can be made available to engineers and managers within hours after construction then there are many economic and quality control benefits that can be realised. A state of the art CFA instrumentation and data management process has been developed in the UK. The key components of the instrumentation, GSM data service and the central database are described. Many benefits to the business have been realised and, where possible, these are quantified.

The spillage that accumulates under conveyor belt lines presents a possible fire and explosion hazard fomiinqjetsoruiel, especially to those who must clean up the spillage. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to reduce this hazard by identifying and investigating the parameters affecting the efficiency of conveyor belt cleaning. The amount of material carried back under the conveyor and the wear rates of metal cleaning blades decreased with increasing blade-to-belt pressure to a limiting value, after which the carryback and wear rates remained essentially constant. The optimum blade-to-belt pressure was found to be 11 to 14 psi for the research conveyor system. Greater pressures increased the blade-belt friction without improving either cleaning or blade life. The modes of blade wear were three-body abrasion and slurry erosion caused by the sand-lime test mixture. Wear rates were reduced by increasing the metal hardness, opti-mizing the pressure, and removing conveyor belt imperfections. Corrosion was not observed to affect the wear of various steels in tests of less than 34 h. The results of this study should allow mine operators to run their conveyors under conditions that will maximize cleaning and minimize equipment wear.

"The Anomaly A area of the Clarence Stream gold deposits in southwestern New Brunswick contains mineralized structures that bear geometrical relationships to regional folding events. The four mineralized zones of Anomaly A (AD, MW, 93, and Murphy) are hosted by turbiditic graywacke, quartzose wacke, siltstone, and argillite sequences of the Kendall Mountain Formation. A regional scale structural analysis reflects at least four deformational events, three of which appear to control the folded geometry of Anomaly A (D2, D3, and D4). F2 and F3 folds are coaxial and are refolded into a dome and basin geometry by F4 folds. The mineralized zones are subparallel to axial surfaces of F2 folds. Structural analysis of a mineralized zone exposed at surface indicates that gold mineralization is hosted by a quartz-vein system that comprises veins generated during both D2 and D3. Threedimensional representations of Anomaly A created using drill-core data and ®GoCAD suggest that the quartz-vein system was emplaced in fault structures during D2 as well as within brecciated dilation zones during D3. Three of the four zones that make up Anomaly A have F2 hinge surfaces that can be linked through a geometry compatible with the style of F3 and F4 folds. The apparent continuity of these three zones indicates the potential for kilometer-scale mineralized structures at Anomaly A. The mineral industry of Benin contributed less than 1% of the 1977 gross domestic product (GDP), which was estimated at $500 million.' Other than limestone and salt, no exploitable mineral deposits have yet been discovered in Benin, which has been rated by the United Nations as one of the world's least developed nations. In 1977, the economy was further weakened by petroleum price increases and severe drought. The country continued to depend on foreign assistance, which averaged $20 million per year, to finance development projects. The country's first 3-year plan, which was put into operation in October 1977 after many delays, allocated more than $1 billion to projects in infrastructure, agriculture, and light industry. The most important infrastructure project was the expansion and modernization of the port of Cotonou, valued as an entrepôt port for the transit of goods to the neighboring countries of Niger and Nigeria. Plans called for an increase in handling capacity to 1 million tons of cargo annually, the improvement of port and cargo handling operations, and the upgrading of the efficiency of the Port Autonome de Cotonou (PAC) management system. The $46 million project was to be financed by a consortium led by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and including Canada, France, Nigeria, and Abu Dhabi. Construction was scheduled to begin in 1978 and be completed in 1980.

The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30,000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet.A typical assay for a monthly period is 14·40/0 Pb., 5·6 ozs. Ag., and 11· 60/0 Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and 'zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.MINING METHODSMining practice throughout the field varies only in minor details. The ore-bodies forming the Broken Hill Lode lie within complex folds arranged along a shear and vary in size and mineralogical associations, but all the mines have similar types. Some of the ore-bodies have weak walls, but the chief difficulty in mining is caused by "heads" and "flaws" in the ore.Besides these local weak areas there are ground movements-referred to later-of varying magnitude extending throughout the central portion of the lode where the large ore-bodies, several hundred feet wide, approached the surface.

Several deposits in the Sheep Hole/Cadiz Wilderness Study Area (WSA) have small identified or potential for undiscovered gold and silver resources. One prospect area is a potential target for molybdenum. Most base and precious metals and one uranium deposit in the study area are of the fissure-filling, contact metamorphic type associated with late stage fluids of the Cretaceous Cadiz Valley batholith. Some evidence suggests limited Tertiary and Quaternary mineralization. Mineral deposits are controlled by faults, shear zones, and joints which strike northwest and dip northeast or southwest. Although undefined, calcium, sodium, lithium, and strontium brines are inferred within the study area. Some potential for oil and gas and geothermal resources is indicated by the interest private industry has shown in the eastern part of the study area. INTRODUCTION The U.S. Bureau of lines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the Sheep Hole/Cadiz Wilderness Study Area (p1. 1) which encompasses approximately 205,000 acres (83,000 ha) in south-central San Bernardino County, California. The U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the mineral resources of mines, prospects and mineralized areas; geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations were conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey.

"SUMMARY A practical application of nitric acid oxidation of sulphides, based on the principles of the Arseno process, has been developed for the Cinola ore. Development of the process has been based on testwork conducted by Bacon Donaldson of Vancouver and Hazen Research of Denver, and on conceptual engineering performed by Minproc Engineers of Denver.A comprehensive Stage II report for the project has been submitted to the B.C. permitting agencies, containing provisions for a zero discharge tailings impoundment system and prevention of acid mine drainage. Approval in principle is expected in early 1989.A feasibility study recently completed by Minproc Engineers and Davy McKee Corporation demonstrates that this project can be brought to production for a capital expenditure of C$120 million for a mill throughput of 6,000 tonnes/day and operated at a total direct operating cost of less than $20/tonne.INTRODUCTION The Cinola orebody was discovered in 1970. It is situated approximately in the centre of Graham Island, the largest of the Queen Charlotte Islands. It represents the mid to upper levels of a hydrothermal precious metals system, characterized by intense brecciation and silicification. Gold is associated with finely disseminated sulphides in a breccia matrix and in free form in numerous quartz veins.Ownership of the property has changed hands a number of times, and previous attempts to bring the property to production have failed. Two critical factors have frequently been blamed for difficulty in creating a successful project: namely, process and environment factors, hence the title of this paper.City Resources (Canada) Limited (""City"") acquired the property in 1986, and commenced an aggressive campaign to verify ore reserves, to carry out metallurgical research and to address environmental issues.PROJECT OVERVIEW When the Cinola orebody was discovered, the significance of hydrothermal mineraliza¬tion associated with crustal plate boundaries was not recognized, and for several years, the orebody was considered an uneconomic curiosity. If the type and location of orebody sought by many companies engaged in gold exploration were to be specified, it would probably be a description of the Cinola orebody - it is a large (greater than 1.5 million ounce), low grade (2.45 gm/tonne), refractory ore reserve associated with the Pacific rim crustal plate boundary. The industry appears to have recognized in the past few years that its future lies in the exploitation of such orebodies, and is prepared to come to grips with the technical problems associated with such ores. In this sense, the Cinola orebody might be considered to have come of age."

Selection of the best possible truck type (model) is of crucial importance for the mine decision-makers. In this paper, authors contribute to the body of knowledge by developing a novel methodology for the selection of mining truck. Both the Coefficient of Technical Level (CTL) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods were used in this study. The CTL represents a mathematical function which takes into consideration the interrelations among the main technical parameters of mining trucks. The authors developed a hierarchical structure where both attribute categories and their importance, i.e. priority or weight in the selection process were determined. For each category, a number of sub-attributes and their priorities were assigned, and a pairwise comparison among them was performed using the AHP method. In the final part of the study, the CTL was integrated into the AHP and represents a holistic approach in the selection of mining trucks. A case study on 180 tonnes truck category offered by five manufacturers was carried out. A sensitivity study of obtained results was also performed indicating a very stable solution. The methodology presented in this paper may be used by mining operators to help in the selection of a specific type when acquiring a new truck. It may also be used by equipment manufacturers to help in analysis of potential benefits of envisaged modifications concerning an existing truck type and/or development of a new type.

The Bureau of Mines undertook this investigation in order to determine the feasibility of producing commercially acceptable alumina and iron by application of the Pedersen process to high-silica, high-titania, ferruginous bauxites of the Pacific Northwest. Calcium aluminate slags were produced by smelting bauxite with coke and lime in an electric-arc furnace. Over 90 percent of the total alumina can be extracted by sodium carbonate solution from slags of properly controlled ternary-phase composition (CaO-Al203-SiO2) that are cooled slowly enough to permit adequate crystallization of the 2CaO-SiO2 and the calcium aluminate compounds. Most of the iron charged was recovered in the regulus; the slag contained about 2 percent iron (as iron oxide), regardless of smelting time.

Illumination is essential for mine safety because miners depend most heavily on visual cues to detect hazards associated with slips/trips/falls and powered haulage. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting mine illumination research to improve miner safety by enhancing a miner?s ability to see mine hazards. Thus far, 16 papers have been published covering diverse topics such as cap lamps, machine-mounted lighting, glare, lighting maintenance, and light-emitting diode (LED) technology issues. NIOSH has also developed an LED cap lamp, LED area lighting, and a Visual Warning System (VWS). This paper provides an overview of the improvements from NIOSH-developed lighting that include: 94% faster trip hazard detection with the NIOSH LED cap lamp; 79% faster peripheral motion detection to detect pinning/striking hazards; no increase in glare; 71% faster machine movement hazard detection with the VWS. Current research is described concerning an LED cap lamp for metal/nonmetal miners, illumination for refuge alternative deployment and inspection, and whether lighting could be used to improve miner escape and rescue in smoke. Lastly, future possibilities of using lighting to improve miner safety are described.

Virtually every coal seam in Appalachia will at some time be subject to multi-seam interaction (Wu et al, 1987). Many such problems result from seams which lie in close proximity or have split and lie within thirty feet vertically of one another. Existing techniques for multi- seam design have concentrated on conditions where the entire inner burden is not the failing member and are unsuitable for ultra-close multi-seam design. Structural integrity of the inner burden must be maintained if two superimposed seams are to be mined separately and under- standing possible failure mechanisms of the inner burden is an essential first step in the design process.

Techniques used to safely control the roof in UK coal mines for some 10 years have been applied to a South African coal mine. This new approach known in the UK as advanced rockbolting technology, is based on applying four fundamental principles: ?Understanding the roof failure mechanisms ?Using an effective roof support system ?Designing this support using measurement ?Monitoring the performance of the system. The paper summarizes the approach in detail and describes how it is being applied by Anglo Coal, giving results obtained to date. Investigations at a number of South African coal mines, including stress measurements at two Anglo Coal mines, have confirmed that the mode of roof failure (lateral shearing due to horizontal stress) is the same as in other coalfields worldwide, and aspects of current world best practice, including the use of advanced technology rockbolting, are therefore relevant in South Africa. The stress measurements indicated a high level of stress field anisotropy and further investigation of stress conditions in South African coal mines is recommended. The most effective bolting system to resist shear failure is one with high bond strength and stiffness. Short encapsulation pull testing of existing South African systems confirmed that they have low bond strength and stiffness. An improved rockbolt system with the required performance, and features allowing rapid installation and installation quality and performance audit, has been developed and is currently under full-scale trial. Design by measurement and routine monitoring procedures including the use of a rotary telltale device are also under trial. It is anticipated that South African coal mines will be able to obtain significant safety and productivity benefits from the application of this technology.

The Hoek-Brown failure criterion is often applied to a wider range of rocks than the isotropic rock masses to which it is strictly applicable. This paper evaluates the patterns of defects in rock masses using spherical projection contour plots of samples of randomly-generated orientations and datasets from mapping of New Zealand closely-jointed greywacke rock masses. Two indices from the contour plots - the area within the 1% contour (A1%) and maximum concentration (Cmax) are introduced for distinguishing uniform (isotropic), random or regular defect patterns. The indices provide a potential extension to current guidelines on the use of the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The paper also outlines kinematic checks to assess the influence of defect clusters on rock mass strength. Das Hoek-Brown Bruchkriterium, das strikte nur fuer isotrope Gefuege gilt, findet oft einen viel weiteren Anwendungsbereich. Diese Arbeit bewertet diverse Dispersionsmuster der Defekte einer Gesteinsmasse. This work was commenced at a time when information on the manufacture of cemented tungsten carbide was urgently needed in Australia. Much information of a general type has been published, but many of the details of the processes used are still undisclosed. The aim of this research was to determine a satisfactory way in which cemented tungsten carbide could, be made, and to investigate the problems which are associated with the process. As the work proceeded, its ramifications grew continually, and it was necessary to limit the possible lines of investigation. After much experimental work, a 9% cobalt-tungsten carbide alloy was developed which had satisfactory properties when used as a cutting tip. The effect of certain variables on the properties of this particular alloy was investigated.The tungsten carbide was prepared in stages from King Island scheelite concentrates under strict laboratory control, whilst the cobalt (1) used was made from cobalt oxide prepared from crude cobalt oxide obtained from Eisdon.In order to clarify the detailed experimental work, a brief summary of the method used for the preparation of cemented tungsten carbide follows.Tungsten carbide and cobalt are prepared in a very finely powdered state, and are then thor,oughly mixed by a ball milling operation. The resultant mixture is pressed in a suitably shaped die into small compacts which are subsequently '''presintered,'' i.e., heated' in hydrogen between 800°C. and 1000°C. The final sintering is carried out in hydrogen between 1,400°C.and 1,600°C. for about half an hour. These "alloys" may contain from 3 to 13% cobalt, depending on the particular properties required of them.PREPARATION OF MATERIALSThe tungsten oxide prepared as described by Smithells (2) was extremely finely divided, and after a few hours' grinding in a ball mill, the powder consisted of material below 10 microns iJ;l size. The oxide was reduced to tungsten metal with hydrogen in a tube furnace. The reduction was carried out at 800-900° C., a rapid flow of hydrogen being maintained in order to remove the water vapour' formed as a result of the reactions:

Investigations reveal that the throughput difference between a perfect production day and the average is often on the order of 40%, and that bulk solids handling system deficiencies are the largest (>50%) class of lost opportunities. Root causes for underperformance of elements in material handling systems can often be traced back to the detailed design and even study-stage oversights. To reduce or eliminate bulk solids handling problems in an existing system requires an analysis of troublesome handling equipment – for example, a concentrate transfer chute that experiences plugging, poor flow to the furnace, unacceptable dust generation, and spillage. These problems often lead to significant maintenance costs related to downtime and personnel time. Understanding the cause and cost of flow issues is the first step in troubleshooting the problem. Next, measuring the material’s flow properties is critical to providing design data required to develop a comprehensive scientific solution. In the case of a new installation, the design data is required to properly design the system right first time and prevent flow problems from occurring so that the new equipment works correctly from start-up. This paper highlights the cost of material handling problems and discusses the best approach to evaluate material handling system deficiencies. A case study is given of how Anglo American's operation in Barro Alto Brazil enjoyed a 5-month payback from a bulk solid transfer chute debottleneck project. INTRODUCTION When operating a plant or designing a greenfield or brownfield operation, the intent is to have perfect production days (PPD) each and every day. Money is made by moving material through the plant in a controlled manner to produce the desired product. Mining operations and copper concentration processes are at the most basic level a practice in bulk solids handling (BSH). Unfortunately, many of the project planning steps are overlooked, particularly related to BSH. Investigations reveal that the throughput difference between a PPD and the actual average is often on the order of 40%, and that BSH system deficiencies are the largest (>50%) class of lost opportunities (Wellwood, 2017). Root causes for underperformance of elements in material handling systems can often be traced back to the detailed design and even study-stage oversights. BSH issues are essentially baked into the fabricated plant and left to operations to accept the deficiencies and deal with them for the life of the mine. These deficiencies then become part of the normal operation of the mine and plant.

Iran's petroleum industry is nearly 50 years old and the oldest in the Near East. According to published figures, Iran ranks third in production and reserves in the Near East. These reserves (including probable reserves) are estimated at 35 billion barrels and constitute about 11 percent of the world's total. Iran is the sixth largest producer of crude petroleum in the world. The 1961 output of more than 430 million barrels was 5 percent of total world out-put for the year. In the same year, Iran ranked fourth among world petroleum exporters, providing 8.4 percent of total world exports.
