In spite of the increasingly polarized and politicized view of climate science and climate change in the United States, many of the principles behind the ?theory? of Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) or Global Climate Change (GCC) are in fact firmly established both in fundamental physics and detailed observations and are widely accepted elsewhere. The discovery of the earth?s ?greenhouse effect? dates back nearly 200 years to the work of French mathematician and physicist Joseph Fourier in 1824 and 1827. In 1872, John Tyndall an English physicist and mountaineer, described the capacity of various gasses to absorb radiant heat. He identified water vapor and carbon dioxide as the principal ?greenhouse? gasses. The work of Fourier and Tyndall was the foundation for the theory that increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere might be responsible for an increase in global temperatures developed by the brilliant Swedish chemist Svante August Arrhenius in 1896. This was backed up by the additional work of Gilbert Callendar in the 1930s, and Gilbert Plass, Hans Suess and Roger Revelle in the 1950s. There is little scientific dispute about the physics by which this occurs: carbon dioxide in the atmosphere absorbs long wave radiation that would otherwise escape into space, thus warming the lower atmosphere and respective temperatures worldwide. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), approximately 2500 climate scientists from around the world, has concluded that increases in carbon dioxide resulting principally from the burning of fossil fuels are responsible for most of the continuing increases in global temperatures (IPCC, 2007). NASA?s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) states; ?The ten warmest years all occur within the 12-year period 1997-2008? (GISS, 2009). 2009 was the second warmest year on record and 2010 was tied with 2005 for the warmest year on record (GISS, 2010, 2011). The science is in fact settled; the earth has not cooled since 1998 as some have claimed. It continues to warm as evidenced by not only surface temperature records but also ocean temperature records as well as changes in physical and biological systems (IPCC, 2007).

Selection of a suitable coal or coals for the manufacture of coke of desired quality with due consideration of the purpose for which the coke is intended requires careful thought, and often it will pay to go to consider able expense in testing such coals as may be available. In general it will always be possible to obtain a satisfactory coal or blend of coals for the particular purpose in view, but in some places the cost of transportation would be prohibitive. It may then be necessary to consider a coal or coals inferior in grade, rank, or both. At times, in fact, only one inferior coal may be available, when the problem becomes mainly one of selecting equipment and operating conditions best adapted to that coal, keeping in mind that the end product of the plant must compete with the imported product in the market the plant will serve. This applies particularly to new projects for which it is necessary to build a plant and start with a clean slate, so to speak. However, it will pay every coke-plant manager to employ a force to continually test the coals used and the coke produced to make sure that the quality is not changing appreciably. Furthermore, if the supply of coals used becomes exhausted it will be necessary to use other coals. Continual testing is particularly necessary at plants using borderline coals or blends, where slight changes in the composition or in operation of the ovens may render them dangerously expanding. In this connection it should be stated that control in the newer coke plants is considerably easier than for those built a decade or so ago, consequently in the new ovens a given operating program can be maintained more precisely. This point is important, because one of the main requirements of the coke user is uniformity in both physical and chemical characteristics. For example, any appreciable changes in the quality of coke delivered to the blast?-furnace operator will involve changes in operation if the best results are to be obtained. Such changes are expensive usually they take considerable time and involve production of inferior iron.

With the development of Wuhan's city planning in China, new buildings of moderate and high store have been increasing day by day. Precast concrete piles or cast-in-site piles were used in the major foundations of the buildings. In process of their design and construction geotechnical engineers are concerned very much about practical bearing capacity and construction quality of pile foundations. In order to grasp accurately the cases static loading or vibration test is used generally to judge them. At present, the major questions in existence are that although a load is applied directly on pile and measured datums are reliable for static loading test, it must take a lot of work and longer time and engineering cost is higher. A vibration test has the advantages of which checking up of pile quality can be performed rapidly, the test is simple and convenient, and scope measured wide. But bigger error exists generally in measured datums. Therefore, it is nesessary to make vibration test on piles more perfect for pile foundation engineering. It is stated in paper that adapted technique of vibration test on piles is quite right in developmental direction sense for pile foundation. There are a great variety of vibration test methods on piles. A few of methods which often are adapted in practice can not meet the need of different practical engineering. It is also an important question whether the instruments of vibration test and relevant computer softewares make a response accurately for practical case. Different sequence of operation and technical requirements comes into being some influence directly on the test results. Meanwhile, different combination of soil stratigraphy, soil texture, groundwater and pile could cause different error of test datum. It is necessary to analyse and judge objectively the results of vibration test. Therefore, on the basis of developing and perfecting further the technique of vibration test, the applied technique of vibration test should be standardized so that better test results can be obtained.

Deposits of rare earth elements (REE) are found in NM, but they have not been important exploration targets in past years because demand has been met elsewhere. However, with the projected increase in demand and potential lack of available production from China, the New Mexico deposits are being re-examined for their potential. REE-Th-U veins are found in the Gallinas, Caballo, Capitan, and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Past production of bastnaesite has come from the Gallinas Mountains. Carbonatites are found in the Lemitar and Chupadera Mountains, Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills, Lobo Hill, and Monte Largo (Sandia Mountains). Although carbonatites have not been found in the Gallinas Mountains, they are suspected to occur in the subsurface based upon mineralogy/alteration. Disseminated Y-Zr deposits in syenite are found at Pajarito Mountain, Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation near Ruidoso. In 1990, Molycorp, Inc. reported historic resources of 2.7 million short tons grading 0.18% Y2O3 and 1.2% ZrO2 as disseminated eudialyte. Two additional deposit types have potential for REE in New Mexico: Cretaceous heavy mineral, beach-placer sandstone deposits and pegmatites. Exploration is ongoing in the Lemitar, Gallinas, and Cornudas Mountains.

Recent exploration by the Cyprus Amax-Highlands Pacific-OMRD Joint Venture at the Frieda River project, PNG has demonstrated the extent of igneous phases, alteration and mineralisation, and the relationships between the various mineralisation styles in this major Cu-Au porphyry-epithermal system. The project area is in the obducted volcano-sedimentary section of the New Guinea mobile belt 78 km NE of Ok Tedi. It is between two major NNE dipping faults interpreted to have undergone thrusting then sinistral shear in the Late Miocene to Recent. The Frieda River Igneous Complex is a 15 km +7 km ovoid area with a central pod of basaltic andesite volcanics with cogenetic diorite to quartz diorite subvolcanic intrusions, and flanking clastic sediments. A series of late-stage, hornblende quartz diorite plugs ring the main igneous mass. The igneous rocks have a normal K calc-alkaline character with a very limited compositional variation. The intrusives are exposed on the eastern flank of the complex and have five mappable units and numerous defined phases. The southeastern quarter of the complex is host to a cluster of at least seven stockwork porphyry copper and skarn-hosted deposits within an area of 4.5 +3.5 km. The Horse-Ivaal and Koki deposits have identified resources totalling 804 mt @ 0.46 per cent Cu and 0.3 ppm Au, and the other deposits are in various stages of exploration. All these deposits are related to the Horse Microdiorite phase of the Complex and are outlined by a zone of potassic-propylitic-SCC alteration. Local overprinting argillic and advanced argillic alteration is related to a separate, post-porphyry mineralisation intrusive phase. The recent emphasis has been on the identification of higher-grade zones using ideas of structural control and specific intrusive-alteration-mineralisation relationships within the known resource areas. An elongate area 13 km x 4 km in the centre of the Complex has advanced argillic alteration in the volcanic rocks. This alteration zone hosts the Nena deposit (52.8 mt @ two per cent Cu and 0.7 ppm Au) and approximately 20 prospects of high sulphidation type. These deposits are distributed along two prominent NW-trending siliceous ridges interpreted as regional scale structures. Nena is a pod of vein and replacement sulphides hosted in a tectonically controlled multiphase breccia that overprints the advanced argillic alteration. The Nena deposit is 4 km from the nearest of the major porphyry occurrences. It is underlain by basemetal veins and minor porphyry mineralisation that are related to the Flimtem Trachyandesite intrusive phase. The recent search for additional Nena-type ore has focussed on the siliceous ridges using detailed structural and geochemical ore control criteria. Widespread, but poorly mineralised, basemetal-bearing carbonate and sulphate veins form a ring around the mineralised area. These veins have sericitic selvages, cut the porphyry mineralisation, but are cut by and locally underlie the silica-alunite phase of the advanced argillic alteration. The current model is that there are discrete intrusive phases responsible for each of major hydrothermal events at Frieda. These include from oldest to youngest:the Koki phase has no related alteration or mineralisation; the dominant Frieda phase has the hornfels, early skarn and minor magnetite-chalcopyrite mineralisation; the Horse phase has the bulk of porphyry copper and skarn-hosted mineralisation and minor basemetal veins; the peripheral Knob phase is barren; and the Flimtem phase has the high sulphidation epithermal deposits and minor porphyry and vein mineralisation. The intrusive phases span the interval 17 to 11.5 Ma and are co-magmatic. They represent discrete batches off the parent magma, rather than simple fractionation products.

The Block 76 project includes the demolition and redevelopment of an entire city block for mixed use retail, office and residential properties directly adjacent to Historic Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. Excavation was carried out 65 ft below street grade and by as much as 50 ft directly below adjacent buildings supported by shallow foundations. Movements of the earth retention system and adjacent buildings were monitored in real time using automated equipment which complemented traditional geotechnical instrumentation. In the areas immediately adjacent to the existing buildings 9 stories or greater, anchored diaphragm walls were employed. Areas of the site not supported by diaphragm walls employed a soil nail wall system. Jet grouting was used for water cutoff in lieu of dewatering along the north and east sides of project. In total, the earth retention scope included 45,000 sq. ft of diaphragm wall, 104,000 sq. ft of soil nail wall, and micropile underpinning of 3 buildings. This paper provides an overall description of the Block 76 project. A detailed account is provided of the technical and commercial lessons learned. The project provided a unique example of how an owner can receive best overall value by acceptance of some technical risk up front. Benefit was gained by allowing the contractor to reduce contingencies within the bid from unknowns on a fast-track project.

Efforts to evaluate washery performance are nearly as old as the art of coal cleaning, and in former years there was no uniformity in either the methods used or the basic terminology employed. This situation, and the con- fusion it bred, prevailed until about the time of the First International Coal Preparation Conference in 1950, Largely because of the interest of the French coal research organization Cerchar, the subject of evaluating performance was given prime importance at this conference. As a result, there is now a much greater degree of uniformity in terminology and methods of expressing cleaning results. The International Standards Organization currently is working toward international standards of terminology and methods that should improve the situation even more. The various criteria that are used to evaluate the performance of coal- cleaning equipment fall into three categories, depending upon the extent to which they are dependent on the density composition of the raw coal; some are directly dependent, others are only indirectly dependent, and still others are substantially indenpendent.

Three properties in the Tuolumne River RARE II area, the Eagle Bluff Mine (lode) and the Indian Creek Bar and Bossy Bar Prospects (placer), have identified subeconomic gold resources (table 1). Nineteen other properties have potential for gold resources. Adjacent to the study area, five properties have identified mineral resources, and nine others have potential for resources. Properties having high-grade zones (shoots), but licking enough tonnage to be classified as resources, are listed in table 2. Gold, in lode and placer deposits, is the principal mineral commodity in the Toluene River study area. Ten properties within the RARE II boundary have gold-rich zones or shoots; they range in size from 12 to 2,500 tons and in average grade from 0.09 to 0.97 oz gold per ton.

"The most economical way of dewatering mineral concentrates is to reduce the moisture content in the material mechanically using thickeners and filtration avoiding thermal drying whenever possible. In addition to this, the dewatering process should produce low moisture cake, high quality liquid, consume little energy. As a part of the dewatering process The CERAMEC® capillary filter has been proven to meet these requirements in over 150 installations. The filtration is done by using ceramic filter plates with small pore size. The capillary action in the filter medium secures gas free filtration at good vacuum, and due to the small pore size, filtrate is crystal clean and particle free. The energy consumption is minimal. This paper will discuss results from filters installed at Pyhäsalmi Mine Oy in Finland where the technology was has been used since the late eighties. Results from more recent installations like Los Pelambres in Chile and LKAB in Sweden will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe idea of using capillary action to make dewatering more efficient was invented two decades ago. Ten years later whole filter plants utilizing the new method were delivered to mine concentrators for dewatering of mineral concentrates. Further development of ceramic membrane plates made it possible to meet the requirements in iron ore dewatering. In addition to low cake moisture, high capacity and low energy consumption, there are a lot of environmental advantages in using capillary filtration. This paper describes recent ground control challenges encountered at the longwall recovery areas of one of Bailey Mine?s two longwall faces and the proactive measures taken by CONSOL management and engineering to mitigate them. The challenges derived primarily from the following causes: (1) irregular roof coal and draw slate thickness, (2) presence of thick sandstone at the recovery area and extremely weak rocks below the sandstone, (3) close proximity to a regional anticline, (4) low shield set pressure and tip load, and (5) ineffective primary roof support that led to progressive failure of the headgate roof. The presence of the anticline contributed to extensive fracturing of the sandstone. Excessive pot-out in advance of the shields frequently occurred near mid-face due to the presence of thick draw slate and irregular roof coal near the recovery area. This, in turn, resulted in face heights that exceeded the maximum reach of the shields. Subsequently, during longwall meshing, when the advance rate slowed considerably, fractured sandstone would often break loose, causing the shields to yield, thereby reducing the height and inhibiting shearer movement. To improve the headgate and face conditions within the longwall recovery area, several actions were taken, including: (1) assessing site-specific roof geology by conducting in-mine roof coring around the recovery areas and by mapping immediate draw slate and roof coal thicknesses within surrounding entries, (2) increasing pump pressure and thus shield set pressures (3) diligently monitoring shield set pressures and longwall extraction horizon, (4) installing additional cable bolts and roof screening to prevent progressive failure of the immediate headgate roof, (5) fully-grouting supplemental cable bolts to improve headgate support stiffness, and (6) gluing the headgate roof within the recovery areas with polyurethane. As a result of these collective efforts, longwall recovery delays at Bailey Mine were reduced from 21 days in 2006 to nearly zero in 2009.

William Frederick McBryde Broun, a graduate of the Royal School of Mines, was employed on the staff of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company for some years prior to 1912, and will perhaps be remembered by some of those who attended the Mount Morgan meeting of the Institute in 1910, as an Associate Member present on that occasion. He severed his connection with the Mount Morgan Company in 1912, and was returning to England via the East Indies, when he contracted typhoid atSingapore and died at Colombo.Years later some old papers were being turned out in the office where he had worked, when a set of M.S. notes in his unmistakeable handwriting came to light. On examination these appeared to be the rough draft of a paper he must have beenpreparing for the local branch of the Institute, which he had not been able to complete. The notes were very rough. Apparently it was the author's intention to fill in numerous gaps with extracts from sundry published articles on Cornish mining; theextracts were missing and only the written portions linking them together were there. They give a sketch of Cornish mining practice which those who wish may supplement (as the author would have done) from Le Neve Foster and other well-knownsources. The fragmental notes which have been pieced together as carefully as possible by Mr B G Patterson, Hon Secretary Mount Morgan Branch; are as follows :-The first mine the author worked at was Carn Brea, in 1904."This is one of the largest tin mines in Cornwall, and belongs to the Carn Brea and Tincroft Mining Co, which also owns Cooks Kitchen. Drilling and blasting are key components of every hard-rock (i.e.,metal/nonmetal/coal) mining operation. Well-executed and maintained drilling and blasting can have a major positive impact on the overall success of such operations. This case study presents the implementation of a new drill and blast engineer position and systematic improvement of the drill and blast operations at a surface metal mine. The findings of and lessons learned from this case study can be applied toother mine operations to improve safety, production, efficiency, and cost savings. Focus areas for the project included refined communications, operational practices and procedures, planning, designing, and data collection and analysis. This case study showed improved efficiency in communication and planning among the engineers, operations team, and contractor groups over the course of the project. An increased awareness of long-term plans and needs for the drills and blasters reduced or eliminated existing delays. Test blasts that implemented new drill and blast designs and updated operational practices and procedures were tested to streamline the process. Constraints regarding explosive product shipments, geological considerations, and a uniform powder factor provided the basis for new blast designs.

"The self-heating of sulphides can be a major hazard in mining operations and concentrate handling, particularly during transportation and associated storage. Self-heating results from the oxidation of sulphide minerals and can vary from being insignificant to highly reactive and potentially hazardous to both humans and infrastructure. It is essential that there be a reliable test methodology that can measure and categorize a given sulphide material as to its self-heating potential. By their nature, sulphide ores and concentrates are complex and variable mineral mixtures making it difficult to predict their self-heating behaviour a-priori based on mineralogy or with a simple “snapshot” test. Furthermore, self-heating behaviour will depend on the state of oxidation of the sulphides as well as time, temperature and humidity. A review of available testing apparatuses and protocols that can be used to assess self-heating potential is presented. Each of these methodologies was examined in relation to its ability to measure and reliably predict the latent self-heating hazard of a sulphide material. Several of the methods were tested and compared to illustrate their strengths and weakness. The results indicated that a number of the test protocols may produce false negative indications of self-heating potential, constituting an obvious concern to the industry.INTRODUCTION Sulphides as well as other materials (coal, wood chips, hay, powdered milk, to name a few) that are stockpiled in an air atmosphere may undergo oxidation reactions which can result in the evolution of heat (Beever, 1984) (Hudak, 2002) (Blanchard, 2007). If the rate of heat generated exceeds the rate of heat dissipation, the stockpile temperature will rise, potentially leading to “hot spots” in the most reactive areas, and possibly even fires. The heat generation rate, the “self-heating” rate, depends on many factors such as the type and composition of material, particle size, moisture content, oxygen availability, ambient temperature and humidity, and of prime importance, the extend of prior oxidation, or more specifically, the presence of oxidation products. The desire of operators that mine, process or transport sulphide-bearing materials with a potential for self-heating is to have an accepted and reliable method for evaluating and quantifying the potential hazard of their material. The challenges are how to best measure the self-heating properties of given samples, and based on results, predict the behaviour of the bulk material over time and in-situ. Generally, when evaluating a given material one derives the self-heating characteristics of that sample at the time and under the conditions of testing, which will be referred to as a “snapshot test”. If that material is invariable, i.e. it will not change its response over time, then it may be considered to be a “predictive test”. However, if as a result of continuing oxidation or other changes, the material becomes more or less reactive with time, then a “snapshot test” is unreliable with respect to predictive ability."

Apparatus providing simultaneous differential thermal analysis, thermo-gravimetry, and evolved gas analysis, has been developed by the Bureau of Mines specifically for thermal study of oil shale and other solid, natural fuels. The apparatus is described in detail, and simultaneous analyses on a single sample of an oil shale mineral, nahcolite, and a thermal analysis demonstration compound, calcium oxalate monohydrate, are presented to demonstrate the instrument's capabilities.

Foundation pile driving hammers used in New York City in the past 100 years have been drop, steam, compressed air, diesel, and hydraulic. In 1992, the first hydraulic hammer in the New York City area was purchased by Norwalk Marine Contractors, Inc. from Junttan in Finland. It was bought because of its variable energy and ease of mobilization, not because of its higher transferred energy. Heller and Johnsen engineers instrumented hydraulic hammers on nine jobs. The measured transferred energy for the nine jobs was found to average approximately 80 percent. There is no clear consensus regarding the reasons for the hydraulic hammer being more efficient in delivering energy to the pile as compared to single-acting steam/air impact hammers. To minimize pile damage during installation, and to minimize footage overruns, an up-to-date version of the wave equation software that includes an efficiency value of 0.95 for hydraulic hammers is now used.

Mining operations are characterized by cost pressure and cycling product prices. A high potential for enhancing efficiency is the integration of all single steps of the mining working chain into a production process structure to make advantage of an optimized flow of material and information through the ?moving ore factory?. As modern mining machinery today is controlled electronically and even already operated autonomously, a smooth and cost efficient flow of data in the mining process will be crucial for cost efficient future mine operations. Therefor, the International Rock Excavation Data Exchange Standard (IREDES) was launched by major players in the industry. The task of this initiative is to define a ?common electronic language? for easy and standardized data exchange between mining machines and central computer systems. As in other industries, this standard is expected to have significant impact on the use of automated equipment. It shall provide easy ways of using multi vendor machine installations in data controlled mining processes. At the same time it reduces cost for individual development of interfaces for all parties involved. Standardized data exchange is also a crucial precondition to integrate the mining process into enterprise level modeling, cost analysis and decision finding systems. The standard?s technical architecture is open and flexible for future applications. It uses modern XML technology enabling easy data exchange with commercial databases as well as open on line networking. The IREDES work is carried out by the initiative members working jointly together in the technical work groups. Prototyping implementations of the Drill rigs profile are currently going on. Further profiles under development cover LHD?s/Loaders/Trucks and Explosives Chargers. The first official release covering the Drill Rigs profile is planned for the end of 2002.

The history of mining education, like the history of the mining industry, is typified by “boom and bust” cycles. In academia, the perpetual problem can be stated as “too many graduates for the jobs or too many jobs for the graduates.” The deep “bust cycle” that spanned the 1990s through 2003 spawned renewed efforts to eliminate, consolidate, restructure, rename, reinvent or otherwise change mining education to make it (for some) more fiscally or socially acceptable. During this period, a number of mining programs were eliminated, and by the late 1990s senior people in academia and their counter-parts in industry became increasing concerned about the very real possibility that strategic disciplines may disappear altogether. As a result, the Mining and Metallurgy Society of America (MMSA) created an educational committee to explore how industry could help preserve key programs necessary to provide future professionals. Several meetings were held to assess the problems and look for solutions. In 2004, this effort culminated in the first of the “Engineering Education” sessions to be held at the SME Annual Meetings. In response to the information presented in this first meeting, Marc LeVier (then president of MMSA) invited a number of the participants to reconvene the following day. An action plan was formulated and a task force was organized. To more fully represent all industry sectors, SME later that year assumed the sponsorship role for the task force.

Antimony ore samples (mean assay 18·7 per cent antimony) from Endeavour Inlet, Marlborough Sounds New Zealand, were tested for upgrading by flotation to a saleable product (60 per cent antimony).The effects of activating agents, collectors, frothers, pH, conditioning time, and particle size on the recovery and grade of a stibnite flotation concentrate were determined using HaIlimond tube and laboratory flotationcell test apparatus. Optimum flotation conditions for the ore were thereby established. A stibnite concentrate grading 63 per cent antimony and an overall recovery of 90 per cent is obtainable in a two-stage process.
