The following pages discuss the objectives, the background, and scope of work of an industrial engineering analysis of far-,n haulage systems in underground retreat coal mining. This study ran concurrently with an existing industrial engineering study of methods of improving safety and production efficiency in underground pillar extraction. 1. OBJECTIVES The objective of this project was to provide basic data inputs that will inpart knowledge as to the major constraint to pillar extraction sections. Furthermore, the industrial engineering study will suggest ways to optimize haulage systems and to develop more efficient work practices and operational techniques that will maximize equipment utilization.

The Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) is a regional sewer authority that serves ten communities in the Providence, Rhode Island metropolitan area. From 1992 to 1999, the NBC developed a comprehensive facilities plan to abate Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) pollution in the Upper Narragansett Bay. The plan underwent many major evolutions during this period, most notably the addition of a stakeholder?s process by which NBC demonstrated a site-specific plan to control the pollutants and meet water quality standards. The favored solution consisted of deep tunnel storage with treatment at existing wastewater facilities that had been recently upgraded. In 1999, a final plan was accepted which included two tunnels, five CSO interceptors, twelve sewer separation projects, a wetland facility, and a wastewater treatment facility upgrade. The program is to be constructed over 20 years in three sequential phases (Figure 1). Phase I of the program includes a 4,963 m (16,284 ft) long, 7.9 m (26 ft) diameter, 70.1 m (230 ft) deep storage tunnel; seven drop shafts with connecting adits; ancillary facilities; and a pump station. Construction of Phase I began in 2001 and is expected to be operational by October 2008. This paper focuses on design and construction of the Fields Point Tunnel Pump Station (FPTPS)located at the south end of the main spine tunnel. A189 Ml/day (50 MGD) pump station is required to lift CSO flows from the tunnel to the Fields Point Wastewater Treatment Facility (FPWWTF). The pumps are to be housed in a 35.6 m × 18.6 m ×20.7 m (117 ft × 61 ft × 68 ft), 91.4 m (300 ft) deep cavern excavated in a complex meta-sedimentary rock of the Rhode Island Formation, and connected to the surface by 9.7 m (32 ft) and 3.4 m (11 ft) diameter shafts. Factors which influenced selection of the size, configuration and location of facilities included the preferred arrangement of pumps, critical aspects of site geology, and estimated cost. Technical and value engineering reviews also affected the final design. Following Notice to Proceed (NTP), concerns were raised by the contractor regarding constructability and design. Additional geotechnical investigation and independent engineering review were employed to validate the design assumptions. The cavern was successfully excavated and sup-ported in rock, completed on schedule and within budget in 2005. In 1992 the NBC retained Louis Berger Group (LBG) as Program Manager (PM) for the CSO Abatement Program. LBG thereafter formed a design team including: Jacobs Engineering Group(JEG) as the designer for underground structures and near surface collection facilities; Black and Veatch(B&V) to design the pumping system and associated facilities; Haley and Aldrich (H&A) to oversee the geotechnical program; and Malcolm Pirnie to design the system-wide instrumentation and control system. Construction management, resident engineering, and inspection services were provided by the joint venture Gilbane/Jacobs Associates (G/J).

"Batch centrifugal gravity concentrators, which produce very high ratios of concentration, have become common place for recovering free gold within milling circuits. Their effectiveness has proven to be especially useful in recovering finer gold particles. The knowledge related to testing, modeling and scale-up of these systems has been well established over the recent decade mostly due to the efforts of the late Dr. Andre Laplante.Gravity separation technologies such as jigs, spirals and shaking tables can provide the increased mass yields required for minerals that occur at higher concentrations than gold, however their effectiveness tends to diminish at finer particle sizes. The development of high mass yield centrifugal concentrators has provided the opportunity to be able to recover a wide range of minerals at finer particle size classes when compared to the more traditional gravity concentration devices. These concentrators also provide additional benefits such as smaller unit footprint and automated operation.This paper discusses the background, current practices and future applications for high mass yield centrifugal concentrators in base metals, sulfides and industrial minerals. Bench scale, pilot scale and plant practice examples are also presented.INTRODUCTIONGravity concentration, one of the oldest mineral beneficiation processes, has evolved over the decades and continues to play an important role in modern mineral processing operations. The development and growth of froth flotation in the early part of the twentieth century led to a decline in the importance of gravity concentration. However, gravity concentration continued to be used for ores that are difficult to beneficiate using froth flotation; such as tin, tungsten, niobium/tantalum, iron, industrial minerals and oxidized coal. In recent decades, many operations have begun to employ a combination of both gravity concentration and froth flotation Since flotation relies on surface chemistry and gravity concentration relies on specific gravity differences, putting these techniques in series provides today’s metallurgist with unprecedented opportunities to maximize grade and recovery of many of these minerals."

The Old Bevier Aerobic Wetland in Macon County, Missouri, was constructed between 1990 and 1991 by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Land Reclamation Program for the purpose of treating acid mine drainage (AMD). The principal source of the AMD is from an underground mine that operated during the 1920's through 1950's, which was partially exposed during surface mining in the 1960’s. Limestone bedding of an AMD collection system provided alkalinity similar to an anoxic limestone drain (ALD). Because the original aerobic wetland failed when a critical dilution water supply became unavailable, the total acidity of the AMD overwhelmed the limited neutralization ability of the aerobic wetland. The aquatic vegetation deteriorated and treatment became ineffective. The Missouri Land Reclamation Program with the assistance of the Office of Surface Mining, Mid-Continent Regional Coordinating Center rehabilitated the Old Bevier Aerobic Wetland in 2001, incorporating newer technologies to improve the performance. The new system, Old Bevier II treatment facility, consists of a 2-stage vertical flow pond (VFP) with associated oxidation cells and aerobic wetlands. This paper discusses the performance of this passive AMD treatment system, updating an earlier report. The new treatment system has operated with nearly continuous net alkaline discharge and a high iron removal rate. Treatment improves during warm months when emergent vegetation is fully established and biologic activity is greater. Reduction in system efficiency is evident during winter months.

This paper summarizes the progress of geological exploration at North Broken Hill Ltd.The North Mine orebodies occur in knots of minor folds on a simple limb structure which is itself highly folded, giving rise to two distinct orebodies pitching N. at av. 42° down to 2,920-ft. level, where the pitch steepens to near vertical as a result of complementary shear movement on the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone.The lack of adequate marker beds and top and bottom relations makes the resolving of the complex structural environment of the orebodies most difficult.To test the deeper ground of each side of the De Bavay Fault on the 2,600-ft. level the footwall drive was extended 3,556 feet and over 20,000 ft. of drilling completed from three transverse fans, only one of which intersected the orebodies due to steepening of pitch.The problem of locating the North Mine orebodies N. of the DeBavay Fault remains speculative because the exact position of them S. of the fault is still unknown. Exploration beyond the fault in the search for ore had two lines of mineralization to consider, an eastern one through Cosgroves-Round Hill, long regarded as the continuation of the main lode, and a western one passing through Silver Hill Silver Peak.From surface 45,000 ft. of drilling was completed in five sections, establishing that the structure was dominantly synclinal with a flatdipping E. limb, the W. limb and adjoining structures being involved in the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone. Mineralization, though weak, was remarkably persistent but the economic mineralization exposed at surface has not persisted with any continuity.Deep exploratory drilling below the bottom level (3,370 ft.) has established high-grade ore to a depth of 4,095 ft. and also has proved its existence within the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone.INTRODUCTIONThis paper summarizes the progress of geological exploration at North Broken Hill Limited from the inception of the Geological Department in 1941 until the end of 1955. Water use and wastewater management is becoming a focus for many industries around Australia and the rest of the world. Good quality water is increasingly being recognised as a precious resource, and regulations on the bulk storage and discharge of waste streams is becoming more stringent in order to protect the environment, existing water reserves and the communities that use these resources. Components such as heavy metals, arsenic, cyanide, and sulfate from acid mine drainage are some that occur at mining and metallurgical processing sites. Removal of such components can allow safe re-use of these streams, reducing the new water requirements of the process, or else allowing acceptable discharge to the environment. Re-use or discharge of treated water eliminates or reduces the risk associated with storage of large volumes of contaminated water on site.Technologies where a contaminant is selectively precipitated and removed as a sludge are used for many of these treatments. Selection of the best treatment option for wastewater must depend on what is suitable to each site, and consider not only the nature of the contaminant, but also other aspects, including the location and situation of the site, local regulations, cost of reagents, the sensitivity of the local environment and waste sludge disposal options. To outline how an effective and economical solution can be designed and delivered, this paper will present a case study for the removal of arsenic from a site wastewater, from assessment of the problem, selection of suitable technology, design and implementation, to the benefits delivered to the site.CITATION:Salokannel, A, Nevatalo, L M, Martikainen, M, van der Meer, T and McCulloch, J, 2013. The feasibility is demonstrated of reconstructing the volumetric distribution of liberated particles and middlings by use of a damped, weighted least-square regularisation method. This allows a precise mass balance to be obtained around a separation/concentration unit, permitting evaluation of the partition curve (Tromp curve) of the separator. Areal grade measurements are made on polished sections of feed, concentrate and tailings and a kernel-based inversion technique is then used to obtain the volumetric grade distribution of the three assemblages. A plain kernel (number of occurrences) and a weighted kernel (each occurrence counted with its area) are used for the solution. Testing of the method on computer-generated synthetic areal grade measurements indicates that it offers a valid alternative to the tedious conventional procedure of conducting experiments with heavy liquids

The technical literature on the general subject of crushing contains many references to the work of investigators on the laws governing, and the factors entering into, the economical production of fine materials. In fine grinding, whether for the purpose of producing fine material, or for the unlocking of minerals in an ore, close control of the screen sizes of primary-crusher products is of secondary consideration and accordingly has received very little attention. The growth and development of the nonmetallic industries, however, have drawn more attention to primary crushing. Many of these industries are interested in the production of relatively coarse products that meet certain definite size specifications, a condition entirely different from that existing in the field of ore dressing. Under such conditions, a knowledge of the factors governing the selection and operation of primary-crushing equipment is essential to the economical production of a satisfactory material.

The equilibrium distribution of Cu, Fe and Ni between Cu-Ni-Fe mattes and Pt alloy was measured as functions of the sulphur partial pressure (pS2), oxygen partial pressure (pO2),temperature and Fe content of the matte. The distribution ratios of Cu, Fe and Ni between matte and alloy were independent of oxygen pressure when the pS2was fixed at 2.5x10-5atm and pO2was varied between 10-15and 10-12atm. The distribution ratio of Cu, Fe and Ni increased as the sulphur partial pressure increased. The Cu and Ni distribution ratios decreased with increasing temperature and the Fe distribution ratio increased slightly over the temperature range of1350?1500°C. For mattes where the proportions of Cu and Ni were kept constant, the distribution ratio of Cu increased as the Fe content in the matte increased. The Fe and Ni distribution appeared to be independent of the iron content in the matte and had a value of 1.2 and 1.6 respectively. The activity of Cu, Fe, Ni in the matte was calculated using a regular solution model for solid Pt-Fe-Ni-Cu alloy. The activity coefficient of Cu, Fe and Ni decreased as pO2and pS2increased.The activity coefficients also appeared to be independent of the Fe content and temperature over the range of 36 to 54 wt% iron and 1350 to 1500°C respectively. A laboratory-scale investigation was made of the basic problems involved in developing a ceramic heat exchanger to operate at high temperatures for using nuclear heat from gas-cooled process-heat reactors. Technical data were obtained on transferring heat by forced-convection from helium to air in a single-tube vitreous-alumina heat exchanger. Coolant air was passed through the annulus parallel with, and either concurrently or counter to, the flow of helium inside the tube. The data obtained pertain to removing heat from the helium. Average inside film coefficients were determined at mean surface temperatures of 200° to 1,570° F., inlet-gas temperatures of 1,450° to 2,665° F., and Reynolds numbers up to 560. The gas-to-surface temperature ratios were varied from 1.05 to 7.6. The tabulated results are shown in the appendix at the end of this report. The film coefficients of heat transfer were correlated by taking into account the physical properties of the helium at the average fluid temperature. With experimental conditions pointing to a laminar flow, the Nusselt number was found to decrease as the ratio of gas-to-wall temperature was increased to a value of 3. However, within the range tested, gas-to-wall temperature ratios above 3 did not affect the Nusselt number, regardless of the value of the Graetz number. Thus, beyond this point any increase in this ratio ceased to influence the heat-transfer relationship.

This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the effect of shape and size on strength of geologic materials. The results indicate that the shape effect is caused by the development of confining pressure at the interfaces. The linearization of the obtained formula is of the same form determined by experiments. The size effect is attributed to the fact that the geologic materials contain discontinuities in the form of fractures, bedding planes, and cleats. The maximum reduction factor for the size effect is the one-sixth power of the volume of a cubic test specimen. The results of this work are particularly useful in determining the strength of coal pillars in underground mines.

Your Excellency, on behalf of the Council of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and, indeed, on behalf of everyone present, I extend to you a welcome, and our thanks for your gracious acceptance of the invitation to be here to-day and, later on, to present Honorary Membership Certificates. I also welcome the several official representatives of our Allies, of Great Britain and our sister Dominions.To Messrs. E. C. Driffield and E. J. Rigby, two of the original Foundation Members, who are with us to-day, I extend greetings.The present occasion is opportune to express, on behalf of a representative body of professional men, deep appreciation of the sacrifice which His Majesty the King has made, and will continue to make, by appointing His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester as Governor General of Australia and, therefore, His Majesty's senior personal representative in this country.I suppose, that as the primary reason for our assembly to-day is to celebrate the Fiftieth Year of the Institute's existence, I should properly on this occasion, give an account of its history and development. However, as this subject was ably covered by Mr. L. V. Waterhouse, in his Presidential Address in 1938, I trust I may be excused for selecting some other subject. I shall, therefore, exercise my privilege as President and give you a short history of the Mining and Metallurgical Industry of this country with special reference to its effect on the development of the Commonwealth and on the national economy. I apologize in advance for any statistics which I inflict upon you; some of these will be three or four years out of date, because of censorship restrictions. I shall as far as possible refer firstly to the industry prior to and including 1893, the Institute's foundation year, and then to subsequent development.Australia, is pre-eminently a pastoral and agricultural country and it leads the world in the production of wool. Nevertheless, it has an international reputation as a producer of gold and various metals and of minetal products.The development of gold mining in the decade 1840-50 was an epoch-making event in Australia's history, because, to quote one writer's apt phrase, "it precipitated Australia into nationhood." It was certainly responsible for a rapid increase in population. Thus, during the period 1841-1861 the population of Australia increased fourfold, from 221,000 to 1,170,000.The effect of the discovery of gold in Western Australia was even more striking. "Increased production of explosives in the United States in 1933 compared with 1932 is shown by statistics compiled by the Demographical Division, Health and Safety Branch, United States Bureau of Mines. The figures relate only to explosives used for industries purposes, such as mining, quarrying, and road building, and do not cover nonindustrial explosives, such as ammunition or fireworks. Industrial explosives include black blasting powder, permissible explosives, 5 and high explosives other than permissibles figures in the tables of this report were compiled from reports covering sales by the individual companies manufacture of explosives in the United States in 1933. Because of the close agreement among the several series of figures, the quantity of explosives sold is considered as reflecting production and consumption, and the three terms ""sales"", ""production"", and ""consumption"" are used interchangeably in the discussion unless otherwise stated.Of the principal industries that use high construction operations accounted for the largest percentage of increase in consumption during 1933; metal mining and quarrying also used more of this class of explosives than in the previous year. Coal mining is the chief consumer of permissible explosives; the figures for 1933 showed that bituminous-coal mining used a larger quantity than in 1932, and that anthracite mines also showed a small increase. Although a net increase of less than 1 percent in consumption was reported for black blasting powder, large increases in use of this class of explosives were reported for metal mining, miscellaneous types of work, and bituminous-coal mining. In order to evaluate the relationships between weathering and durability and strength of rock samples from the Goathill North rock pile at the Molycorp Questa mine, NM, we conducted slake durability and point load tests. Slake durability index (ID2) values ranged from 84 to 98%. Point load strength index (Is50) averaged for all rock units ranged from 1.1 to 5.7 MPa. Results show a slight positive trend between ID2 and paste pH. Two populations of data are distinguishable when ID2 is plotted versus the percentages of chlorite, illite and internal friction angle. In general, Is50 values increase toward the interior of the rock pile. Preliminary conclusions indicate that the durability and strength of the rock pile material generally increase toward the interior of the rock pile. Pre-rock pile alteration and post-rock pile weathering history have affected the durability of the GHN rock pile samples.

Twenty-sixth Sir Julius Wernher memorial lecture, presented at the Tunnelling '94 symposium held in London, 5-7 July 1994. In describing 18 projects with which he has been involved over a period of 36 years, the author aims to illustrate how technological change and an increase in scientific knowledge have influenced tunnelling practice, which he nevertheless maintains does continue to be an art. Tunnels discussed are: the Silver Street, Blackfriars, Whitechapel, St. Paul's and Waterloo Post Office tunnels, 1958-1969; metro tunnels on the Victoria Line, London, 1962-1970; the introduction of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), 1971-1978, in the Empingham reservoir diversion tunnels in Rutland, the bentonite tunnelling machine experiment at New Cross, the Southern tunnel water main section of the London Ring Main and the Warrington sewer in Cheshire; tunnels in rock 1975-1981, for the Lune Wyre and Megget Manor aquaducts, Weymouth sea outfall and Bristol interceptor sewer; Priestley TBM tunnels 1969-1982; the Greater Cairo wastewater project 1983-1987; Anacostia River crossing, Washington DC 1985-1987; the Channel Tunnel 1987-1992; and the Storebaelt eastern tunnel in Denmark, 1992-1994.

The Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) is low angle, duplex thrust system that has developed in a graphitic pelite schist within the Otago schist belt, New Zealand . At Round Hill lateral ramps have developed parallel to the movement direction between+ the footwall and hangingwall shears. These structures exhibit normal oblique-slip displacement which has been an important mechanism for creating space in an otherwise compressional system. Gold-bearing quartz veins were emplaced along the boundary shears and lateral ramps during thrusting. Gold within the lateral ramps is coarse (up to 300 microns) however hanging wall cataclasite development in the boundary shears after the gold was deposited has reduced the grainzise of most of the gold to less than one micron. This bimodal gold distribution has metallurgical implications with respect to the maximisation of gold recovery at Macraes.

The WNW-ESE-trending hydrothermal veins cut alternating mica schists and quartzites of mainly Ordovician age and, to the west, a Hercynian muscovite-biotite granite. They have been prospected and developed to a depth of 300 m and reserves of 20 t Au estimated. The paragenetic sequence and chemical compositions of the ore minerals are generally similar to those at Jales to the south. Gold, electrum and aurian silver form inclusions in arsenopyrite, pyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrrhotite and quartz and also occur in veinlets that cut these minerals. Silver has been found in gold, electrum, aurian silver, tetrahedrite, freibergite and the Ag-Pb-Sb sulphide owyheeite. Early arsenopyrite crystallised at an estimated 480 degrees C and the more common, later arsenopyrite in which Au and Ag are generally included at 430-300 degrees C. Sphalerite crystallised at 307-100 degrees C. Monoclinic pyrrhotite may have been formed by the inversion of hexagonal pyrrhotite at 248 degrees C

Anderson, N.F. Collins, in The Metallurgy of Lead (Chas. Griffin, London, 1910) also gives (pp. 247 254) the principles that he believes govern the successful charging of the blast furnace."
