Blocking. (5) The “blocking” of boulders is a much cheaper way of breaking them up than “mud capping.” It should always be used in preference to that method except when too much time will be consumed by a crew of men waiting for the drilling to be done, as shown in example of cost No. 1, as given under “mud capping.” Under such circumstances the time consumed would be a greater cost to the contractor than the extra amount of dynamite. Then, too, on large thin boulders to drill one hole would result only in breaking the stone into such pieces as would again have to be broken; and the many holes might equal the cost of extra dynamite. Under such circumstances if method (6) cannot be used, “mud capping” will have to be resorted to, to do the work economically.

The number of Native Americans presently working as mining engineers is extremely low-perhaps three in the entire US. At the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, it was felt that introducing high ability students to mining engineering at the high school level would encourage more to consider mining engineering as a career. New Mexico Tech, in Socorro, NM, has initiated a continuing summer college program for Native American high school students. The program, which began in the summer of 1980, is designed to introduce participants to college life, enrich their high school curricula, and expose them to the problems and challenges of a career in mining and related engineering fields. Students From reservations throughout New Mexico with a demonstrated aptitude for science and mathematics were encouraged to apply for admission. Preference was given to high school sophomores and juniors since it is hoped that students will want to return for a second year before graduating from high school and beginning university studies. The program seeks to impress upon the students the need fir Native Americans in the fields of seience and mineral engineering.

"Deep sea mining of polymetallic sulphides will change the physical and chemical conditions at the seafloor by creating scars when sulphides are removed, and potentially also by deposition of mine tailings at the seafloor. These changes will impact the existing ecosystems at the seafloor in and around the mined areas. Seafloor Massive Sulphide deposits that have been exposed to oxic seawater weather into Fe-metal-oxyhydroxides. However, the rates of weathering and release of heavy metals and other toxic compounds to the environment from freshly exposed sulphides in a deep-sea environment are not well studied.During a cruise to the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea in July 2014 we will initiate in-situ experiments investigating the microbiological and geochemical processes involved in the weathering of freshly exposed massive sulphides deposits in a natural environment. This will be done by creating scars in naturally occurring sulphide deposits and by deploying weathering experiments at the seafloor. The sites will be revisited and re-sampled in 2015. The mobility and fate of heavy metals will be one of the main concerns of the study as well as constraining the time it will take for exposed sulphides to return to the chemical state present prior to mining. In this presentation we will present the experimental framework and the preliminary results from the July 2014 cruise. This project is part of the EU funded MIDAS (Managing impacts of deep sea resource exploitation) project."

The Burra Burra Mine is situated in complexly folded Torrensian dolomites and limestones forming the faulted axial region of a major anticline. The orebody mined was largely of secondary origin and confined between two faults, Kingston's on the west and Tinline's on the east. The orebody occurred at the junction between cherty dolomites and a clastic limestone with a large mass of marble breccia along its western margin. Secondary ore consisted of carbonates and oxides in the breccia and the ore bed and detrital copper minerals deposited as part of a clastic breccia in sinkholes and solution cavities in the dolomites and ore beds.Primary sulphides occur disseminated in the marble breccia and in stratiform habit in the ore bed. Kingston's so-called "lode" may be mineralized marble breccia.The marble breccia appears to be of diapiric or sedimentary origin and there is evidence to support a sedimentary origin for some of the copper sulphides. No igneous rocks have been discovered within 20 miles of the mine and any hydrothermal activities were probably at comparatively low temperature. The possibility of extensive stratiform and disseminated copper sulphide mineralization in the marble breccia and ore bed requires testing by further drilling and geophysical surveys.INTRODUCTIONThe re-interpretation of Burra Burra geology and ore formation discussed in this paper resulted from a comprehensive investigation of the mine and its surrounding district begun in December 1961 and in progress at the time of writing. (February 1963). The decision to investigate Burra Burra was taken after a thorough examination of records and reports of all non-ferrous metal deposits throughout South Australia and was given impetus by a report by Thomson (1963) suggesting a sedimentary origin for the copper mineralization. Although the author does not concur fully with Thomson's interpretation there is no doubt that sedimentary processes have played an important part in the formation of the Burra Burra copper deposit, nor is there any doubt that igneous activity played no part.

Photoelastic, wire resistance, and borehole-deformation gages were used to measure the in situ strains when an outcropping Black Hand Sandstone Formation in Hocking State Forest, Hocking County, Ohio, was overcored to stress-relieve the surrounding sandstone. Strains transmitted to the photo-elastic gage did not produce isochromatic patterns suitable for quantitative analysis. Strain readings from the wire resistance gage indicated tensile-strain loading during overcoring; readings from the strain-gage bridges in the borehole-deformation gage indicated compressive-strain relaxation during overcoring. The magnitude and orientation of the computed stress fields obtained from both gages were comparable when the corresponding tensile and compressive elastic moduli were applied. Stresses computed from deformation and resistance gages at depths to 5 feet showed the maximum stresses to range from 1.042 to 2.121 times greater than the minimum stresses. The bearings of principal stresses calculated from the deformation gage readings varied between N 61° E and N 83° E; the wire resistance strain gage bearing computations varied between N 68° E and N 82° E. Measurements of in situ strain in sandstone were shown to have promise but to require further development in field technique that could likely be achieved through experience.

"Best practice in the economic evaluation of mining projects and operations is based on the integration of geological, mining, metallurgical, environmental, marketing, economic and corporate information and strategies. Fundamentally, the economic evaluation takes into account mining, blending, stockpiling, processing, smelting, refining and marketing ore resources with grades estimated by geostatistical methodologies.Nevertheless, a realistic economic evaluation consists of a concurrent and integrated optimization process that maximizes the concentrates or products of liberated and selected ore minerals from mineral deposits. The optimum solution is obtained through a trade-off among mining, blending, stockpiling and processing ore reserves with distinct mineralogy and texture characteristics. The concurrent optimization determines both the practical mining sequence of ore reserves and the dynamic and robust mineral processing flowsheet design over the expected life of mining projects and operations.A combined risk-adverse and concurrent optimization process takes into account the spatial uncertainty of the mineralogy and texture characteristics of ore reserves. Additionally, a variety of mineral processing linear, non-linear, additive and non-additive parameters modeled spatially. The spatial uncertainty of these ore reserves characteristics and parameters has a direct impact in the expected mining sequence, mineral processing flowsheet design, concentrates or products quantity and quality, and economic value of mining projects and operations.Geometallurgical domain constrained stochastic geostatistical methodologies and multivariate mathematical models are applied for spatial uncertainty modeling of ore reserves characteristics and parameters. These mathematical models correlate the mineral processing liberation and selectivity responses of the mineralogy and textures within each geometallurgical domain. These models, in turn, are defined based on results of mineral processing and environmental testwork of unbiased and representative samples chosen for their variability. These samples are selected within mutually exclusive spatial geometallurgical uncertainty domains with similar mineralogical and textural characteristics in mineral deposits.Geometallurgical domains are defined by applying and combining multivariate statistical analysis and implicit modeling methodologies. These involve determining and constraining mineral processing liberation and selectivity properties explicitly contained in the extensive and integrated exploration drillhole database."

En ese sentido, se busca extraer cobre, a presión y temperatura normales por lixiviación con cloro acuoso - amoniaco, a partir de minerales oxidados y mixtos, así como recuperar el cobre contenido en el PLS mediante electrodeposición directa, obviando la etapa intermedia de extracción por solventes, para obtener como producto final cobre catódico.

The timber township of Powelltown, Victoria lies N.E. of Yarra Junction, 60 miles east of Melbourne and in the site of the mill of the Victorian Hardwood Company Proprietary Ltd.A lift gauge railway owned by the company connects Yarra Junction on the Warburton line, with the township through two or three smaller mill centres on the way.The company has been operating for some 12 years. In the divide, about four miles from Powelltown, between the Little Yarra and Latrobe rivers, cutting was continued with material being handled by winch and double incline haulage over the divide. A small bush locomotive dealt with the traffic between the divide and the cutting site.In order to reduce costs, which were heavy at the haulage, the company decided to make a continuous railway from Powelltown to the bush by means of a tunnel through the divide.Hand bore holes were put down on the proposed line of tunnel and showed that the divide at this point consisted of decomposed depth of about 100 ft. towards the eastern or Latrobe side - and that the undecomposed granite summit lay to the west of the surface summit.The bores also served to locate the underground water line, this was afterwards found to rise and fall with wet and weather.To avoid tunnelling in hard and heavy water, the grading of the was laid out with the summit of the hard granite the point in the line.

1. Scope of project In South Australia, the Western Mining Corporation operates the underground copper and uranium mine Olympic Dam. The deposits concerned are enormous (approx. 570 million tons) and have been mined since 1988. At the end of 1996, Western Mining decided to increase the capacity of Olympic Dam from 85,000 t.p.a. to 200,000 t.p.a. Planning At this point, SIEMAG-GHH Mining Division was asked to carry out a study including the planning of the entire shaft hoisting operations and calculation of the investment and operating costs involved. With the assistance of Australian partners, the study was completed within a single month. The principal points of the study were as follows: ? Planning of the hoisting machinery for 1,375 tons per hour from the surge bin below ground to the discharge bunker above ground. ? Optimisation of the hoisting operation with regard to maximum availability and safety. ? Optimisation of the time schedule to minimise the financing costs of the investment. ? Statement of the investment and operating costs. ? Comparison of the technical data, design and availability of the planned machinery with reference plants. Construction of the plant Following acceptance of the study, the decision was taken within a few weeks to implement it. SIEMAG Transplan GmbH received the order to execute the entire shaft hoisting machinery on the basis of the study submitted. The decisive factors in placing the order were: ? Convincing study, adherence to schedule ? Reference to comparable plants elsewhere ? Reference with regard to availability.

Acid rock drainage (ARD) is produced when sulfides are exposed to oxygen and water. Oxidation reactions typically result in a depression of pH and leaching of solutes and metals. Many oxidation models have been developed based on oxygen diffusion, but in environments with high permeability, other transport processes (i.e., convection and advection) can play an important role. Multiple sulfide mineral phases with differing oxidation rates should also be incorporated. WROC, a finite-difference model, was developed to account for these factors in predicting ARD. The program includes sulfide mineral oxidation using a shrinking core mechanism, heat transfer by conduction, heat of reaction, and oxygen transport by diffusion and advection. The model was validated using data from the literature. After validation, the WROC model was used to simulate several different waste rock scenarios including different forms of sulfide mineralization and the effect of implementing a waste rock cover. The results demonstrate that including specific sulfide mineral phases can have a significant effect on oxidation and that implementation of a cover can also aid in reducing waste rock oxidation. Hydrocyclones are a common feature in almost all mining operations in the world, serving mainly as classifiers. Some of their advantages include low capital costs, low space requirements and their ability to reduce residence time in closed circuit grinding processes. Although an extensive body of literature exists for hydrocyclones, these devices are still inherently inefficient, and more research is currently being undertaken, particularly in the field of modelling. In the vast body of hydrocyclone literature published so far, there has been little or no effort devoted to analysing the effect of the cone force ratio on the performance of hydrocyclones. The cone force ratio is defined as the ratio of the spigot to the vortex finder diameter (Shah, 2005). In this study a total of 44 tests was carried out in a custom-built rig at the University of Cape Town. These tests were aimed at evaluating the effect of the cone force ratio on the performance of as mall diameter hydrocyclone. The cut size and water split were used as the criterion for evaluating the performance of the hydrocyclone. Results from the tests showed that the cut size decreased with an increase in the cone force ratio. The cut size also appeared to decrease as the calculated locus of zero vertical velocity (LZVV) shifted inwards. The water recovery to the underflow appeared to increase with an increase in the cone force ratio. The effect on the cut size of adjusting the cone force ratio was found to be higher for a coarser feed than it was for a finer feed.

Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of best practice principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis, and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned. The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95% passing 2 mm, and the design allowed for a single-cutter primary Vezin sampler taking increments from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals while filling a tanker for pneumatic offload at the base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from the smelting complex and the input to the refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ?interleaved? fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks. The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum involves the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs, and stock levels for all operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). In the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, a trend was developing whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock (sender) and the base metal refinery showed an increase in theoretical stock against physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question, and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream. This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the two sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were reanalysed, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again, and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period. From these investigations, it was found that airflows inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias. A change in sampling protocol was introduced, as well as certain physical changes to the sampling equipment, to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period that followed the phased upgrading process showed that the accounting between the smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below 5% relative to theoretical stock). Of the about 60 million pounds of aluminum used in the Pacific Northwest in 1960, 40 million pounds or two-thirds was used by 10 companies. One of these companies made airplanes and missiles; one manufactured roofing, siding, and tubing; three produced truck tractors, truck bodies, or truck trailers; two made architectural metal products; one made irrigation and industrial products; one was a general foundry; and one was a shipyard. These companies contributed to regional growth by developing markets outside the area; some have worldwide sales. Aluminum consumption increased at an average rate of 7 percent annually from 1954 to 1960. Airplane manufacture, formerly preeminent in aluminum use, no longer was in first place in 1960. By industrial group, the leading users were manufacturers of building products, 30 percent; airplanes and missiles, 22 percent; truck tractors, truck bodies, and truck trailers; 17 percent; general foundries, 5 percent; ships and boats, 4 percent; mobile homes, 4 percent; other transportation equipment, 3 percent; and irrigation equipment and all other products, 15 percent.

During the last two decades, China has expanded its iron and steel industry very quickly, from less than 100 Mt/a steel production to over 700 Mt/a. It caused big increases in both domestic iron ore production and imported iron ore quantities year by year. The mode of iron ore supply has changed from almost all domestic supply to major tonnes of imported ore plus domestic ore supply. Over 200 blast furnaces with volumes larger than 1000 m3 each have been built and put into operation. Sinter machines have been enlarged quickly. There are now 135 sinter machines with =200 m2 sintering area each. Pellet production increased from 11.94 Mt in 1999 to 210 Mt in 2011, resulting from rapidly increasing domestic concentrate supply and rapid development of the grate-kiln process. The typical ferrous burden constitution is high basicity sinter plus pellets plus lump. The pellet proportion increased and the sinter proportion decreased gradually. A lot of technical improvements, like deep bed sintering, sintering with a high ratio of limonite, composite sintering, pellet process optimisation, a high ratio of hematite in pelletisation, blast furnace operation with low-grade ferrous burdens and hazardous element control, etc have been made to enhance iron burden quality and to reduce hot metal cost. Chinese iron and steel production is expected to increase slightly in the next few years. Its overcapacity should be controlled effectively. Given the variations of iron ore supply, pellet production will keep progressing in terms of production scale and pellet quality, the sintering process will be improved further by various measures to utilise different ores efficiently, and ferrous burden constitution will be optimised continuously to realise the lowest cost of hot metal production.CITATION:Sha, Y and Wang, Z, 2013. Una vez obtenida la solución óptima para el sistema de bombeo, el diseñador evaluará un programa donde se determine los anclajes y la ubicación de válvulas de aire, considerando ciertas simplificaciones en la estructura que mejoren el análisis del sistema.

To extend the life of the Merchants Railroad Bridge crossing the Mississippi River in St. Louis, MO, the owner implemented a rehabilitation and reconstruction project. The Merchants Bridge provides a key link in the transcontinental railroad system. The bridge is of local importance to the Terminal Railroad Association ? providing a link between St Louis and a rail switching yard in Venice, IL. The intent of the bridge rehabilitation is to keep the Merchants Bridge in service, even though the bridge was originally constructed in the 1890?s. The project involved replacing the East and West approach deck truss spans with new deck girder spans. The rehabilitation program required construction of new concrete piers to support the new spans. In order to reduce the track down time to two, ten day single track shutdowns, the specifications required that all foundation and substructure work be completed while leaving the existing spans in place. The preliminary bridge design specified rock-socketed drilled shaft foundations. Drilled shafts proved to be challenging due to working from beneath the existing bridge, a high water table, utilities, a flood wall, and existing rail way lines. The micropile alternative was technically appropriate given the access limitations, shortened the foundation rehabilitation schedule by several weeks, and realized a significant cost savings to the Owner.

The injection of grouting compounds into the consolidated rock surrounding underground mine workings has long been practiced for the purpose of sealing against water flows. In more recent times however, grout injection has also found application for the purpose of rock mass reinforcement. Mines in Europe,America, Australia and elsewhere now make use of significant quantities of chemical grouts in both preventative and remedial strata control work.   Despite the increasing usage of grouting for these purposes, there is limited knowledge about the effects of grout injection on the rock mass, and acceptance of the method is by no means universal. In some cases grouting has been applied with little understanding of the factors that control its effectiveness, and disappointing results have been obtained.   This paper reviews the basic concepts of how grout injection may contribute to the control of rock surrounding underground mine excavations, and highlights the factors which may serve to limit the efficacy of the method and the uncertainties that complicate the appraisal of grouting as a method of strata control.

The Manto Verde mine is found in the coastal ranges of the Atacama desert, 1000 km north of Santiago, Chile . The deposit is a fault-breccia specularite-oxide copper mineralisation hosted by the Jurassic andesites of La Negra Formation. It is located in a tensional fault that joins twoparallel arms of the Atacama Fault. The mine is in feasibility study: reserves are of the order of 60 Mt at 0.9 wt per cent soluble copper; mining will be undertaken at a rate of 11 000 tpd utilising an open pit and the ore will be heap-leached with acidified sea water, with copper recovery and by SX/EW.

A methodology has been developed and demonstrated to be effective in reclaiming surface-mined land for a forestry post-mining land use. The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) has been applied, almost exclusively, to flat or gently rolling surfaces. One of the primary steps in the FRA is to loosely grade the top 1.22-m (4-ft) of soil or substitute root growth medium to avoid excessive compaction. Concern has been expressed by regulators and the public that loose grading on steep slopes could lead to slope failures, which is one of the issues that SMCRA sought to correct. A field investigation was conducted at a steep-slope contour operation in eastern Kentucky to test the applicability of FRA in this setting. Final grading was performed according to FRA standards. The surface consisted of two distinct substitute rooting media. One was unweathered gray sandstone and the other was a combination of gray sandstone, brown sandstone, and topsoil. A variety of native hardwoods was planted following the FRA guidelines. The slope was instrumented with 70 survey monuments to monitor for mass movement. The reclaimed spoil was also characterized using bulk density and penetrometer resistance methods. The characteristics of both spoils are similar to those observed on flat to rolling surfaces where the FRA has been used and, after one year, approximately 70% of the trees had survived. There has been no major mass movement of the slope and slope stability analyses indicate that the application of the FRA has little impact on the overall stability of the slope.
