The vapor pressures of manganese in equilibrium with several alloys in the iron-manganese-carbon system between 1200° and 1275°K have been measured using the Knudsen effusion technique in conjunction with a vacuum microbalance. The effect of orifice area of the effusion cell upon the measured pressure has been determined. The binary iron-manganese system shows small negative departures from ideality, and the system of mixed carbides, (Fe, Mn)7C3, in equilibrium with graphite behaves ideally. THIS work is a continuation of the investigations in which the Knudsen effusion method has been used to determine thermodynamic activities in systems and at temperatures of interest to metallurgists. In a previous publication,' the free energy of formation of Mn7C3 was determined and some preliminary work on the solution behavior of this carbide with the hypothetical "Fe7C3" was reported. The present work deals with this latter topic and also includes data on the binary ir-on-manganese system. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The Knudsen effusion method was used to measure the vapor pressure of manganese in both the alloy and carbide sections of this investigation. This dynamic method of vapor pressure measurement presents a problem when studying solid alloy systems in which one of the components has a much larger vapor pressure than the others. Over-all depletion of the alloy in the most volatile component will occur during evaporation so that the pressure of that component will decrease. Even more serious than the over-all concentration change is the surface depletion of volatile component in the alloy brought about by the slow rate of diffusion of this component from the interior to the surface of the solid particle. Since knowledge of this surface composition is necessary in order to relate it to the activity determined through the measurements, changes in surface composition from the analyzed bulk composition are to be avoided in dynamic vapor pressure studies of solid alloys. The system under investigation in this study presents the problem of surface depletion of manganese since its pressure at 1230°K is 105greater than iron and 1020 greater than carbon. Since the existence of a volatile manganese carbide had been ruled out previously,' the high manganese pressure relative to iron and carbon insured that the only species leaving the effusion cell was manganese. Therefore, the effusing species required no analysis so that the manganese pressure was determined directly from the weight loss of the effusion cell. In order to detect small weight losses near the beginning of effusion, a vacuum microbalance was used to weigh the cell continually. These initial weight loss data allowed the rate of manganese effusion to be determined before the surface of the alloy became depleted in manganese. Para ello, se determinaron los espesores originales de las Formaciones Chimú, Santa- Carhuaz, Farrat e Inca y los porcentajes de disminución de espesor y con los resultados obtenidos, se diseño y analizó el gráfico de curvas corregidas por descompactación y sin corrección por descompactación. Asímismo, se explica la posible formación de fallas no tectónicas debido a la compactación diferencial y las unidades estratígráficas que comprende el estudio.

Rock preconditioning in advance of mining was shown to be an effective means of rock-burst control based on the results of a field demonstration carried out on the 7700 level of the Hecla Mining Company's Star mine. Mining through the preconditioned zone was characterized by greatly reduced rates of released seismic energy and no bumping or rock bursting occurred within the preconditioned zone. Mining above the preconditioned zone was characterized by greatly increased rates of released seismic energy and rock bursting, particularly where the vein became very narrow in waste zones. This increased incidence of rock bursting points out the need for stope preconditioning to be carried out on an entire stope block basis. The data obtained from the monitoring of the mining above the preconditioned zone on the 7700 level will be extremely useful in evaluating any future stope block preconditioning experiments on the lower levels or the Star mine.

An experimental 1.75 meter Shaft Boring Machine was designed and manufactured by The Robbins Company. The drill was used by contractor Drillcon Raise AB to drill test shafts at an SKB underground test facility. SKB is the Swedish authority responsible for safe management of nuclear waste materials. This “SBM1.8” Shaft Boring Machine was used to drill shallow test shafts ingranitic rock at SKB’s Aspo underground laboratory. The drill used a unique vacuum mucking system. The bored shafts were held to very strict tolerances for bore diameter, straightness, and verticality. This drill was launched and operated from a mobile launcher. Headroom and working space were limited. The SBM1.8 drill produced acceptable test holes. SKB will carry out several studies to determine the suitability of this geology, and of this technique, for safe nuclear disposal. In addition to future use at SKB, many applications are foreseen, particularly in the civil construction industry.

En este sentido, se muestra la interdependencia entre el campo de la prevención de accidentes y la aplicación de los principios de Ingeniería de Higiene industrial, lográndose reducir los niveles de contaminación del plomo y la prevalencia de las enfermedades profesionales a través de una campaña de orden y limpieza efectuada por la sección de Higiene industrial.

One would anticipate that after 40 years in the mineral industry it would be simple to project the trends at least 5 or 10 years into the future. However the last 20 years, 1950-1970, have been so different in the mineral industry from the years 1930-1950 that I suggest only 20 years or so are relevant to any forward projection.Those, of us that have been about during the last 40 years find it hard to relate the two periods.The first with the depression, low base metal prices, attempts to revive the gold industry, very little export of minerals, and finally World War II and the recovery period.The second, a period of unimagined discoveries and the reappraisal of a wide variety of minerals and metals-iron, coal, bauxite, beach sands, manganese, oil and gas, and nickel, to name but a few.The second period started early in the 1950s and was triggered off by the search for oil in Australia.Rough Range No. 1 was an important milestone in our history because it initiated a series of speculations and the re-examination of much of our thinking about our mineral resources. It lead to the discovery of bauxite and the start of a flourishing aluminium industry.The realization of the extent of the iron ore resources was another, major step and the influx of overseas capital and competence started the large wave of development made effective by the Japanese markets.The momentum of the late 1950s has carried us to where we are today and will undoubtedly carry us further forward in the next few years.All this development in the mineral industry has come at a time when our pastoral industries have reached a difficult period. "Large-diameter ball mills have traditionally used steel liners—steel being a highly durable material that can be shaped into any desired geometry, among which the double-wave has been the preferred design. Such a design produces a purely cascading charge motion, which is ideal for the shearing action needed to produce a finer product. Today, however, rubber liners, which have been in existence for over forty years, are now preferred over traditional steel, largely because they weigh less and are easier to maintain. In this paper, we show the operating data from the Hudbay Minerals’ Constancia Mine, wherein the liners on a 26-by-40-foot mill were changed from conventional steel liners to PolyStl™ liners. It is then shown that this change reduced the amount of energy consumed whilst being able to maintain previous grind and throughput levels. The design is verified via discrete element simulations.IntroductionThe Constancia Mine (“Our Business: Peru,” 2016) is located in the southeastern Andes of Peru, at an elevation of approximately 4,200 m. It can be accessed via the CU-126 road, about 95 km from the town of Espinar in Espinar Province. The mine also contains both the Constancia and Pampacancha deposits in the Province of Chumbivilcas. Hudbay Minerals, Inc. acquired the mine in 2011, through the purchase of Norsemont Mining, Inc. and currently retains sole ownership of the property. Production of the Constancia Mine began in 2014, with commercial production levels being achieved in April 2015.The Constancia and Pampacancha deposits primarily include hypogene, supergene, and skarn ores. The Mine’s main products, however, are copper concentrate, with silver contents, and molybdenum concentrate. These mineral reserves are expected to last approximately 22 years. Constancia’s open-pit mine supplies a processing plant that is designed for 81,900 metric tons per day of throughput. Average annual copper production is estimated to be 82,000 mT (contained metal in concentrate). Actual plant production can be found in Table 1."

"Highland Valley Copper is a conventional truck-shovel mining and flotation concentrator operation located 75 km southwest of Kamloops, British Columbia (Fig. 1).The ore is situated within a porphyry copper deposit and is mined at a rate of 135,000 mt/day from two separate open pits. The nearby mill produces concentrates containing 375 million pounds of copper and 5 million pounds of molybdenum metal yearly. In the Valley pit, head grades are roughly 0.40% Cu at a 0.23% Cu equivalent cut-off. The Valley pit strip ratio currently sits at 0.55:1 with waste quantities made up of separate rock and unconsolidated overburden units. From the mill, concentrates are trucked to nearby Ashcroft and then hauled by rail to ocean port facilities in Vancouver. The mine employs 950 people and is planned to operate until 2009. The operation is a partnership between Teck Cominco (63.9%), BHP Billiton (33.6%), and others (2.5%). Management is shared by the two principal owners and directed by a management committee."

The history of the industry which recovers rutile and zircon from the heavy mineral beach sand deposits of Eastern Australia began with the initial discovery of zircon in 1895. Whereas a large number of small companies operated during the rutile boom of 1955-57, the industry is now controlled by a few large groups.Mining is mainly by suction dredging. Metallurgical practice is a two-stage process in which a bulk concentrate of heavy minerals, recovered by gravity methods, is separated into its constituent minerals by processes based mainly on surface, electrical, and magnetic properties.Various separating devices using these principles have been developed in the industry and combined in various ways in the operating plants.There is scope for future metallurgical developments.INTRODUCTIONThe existence of deposits of heavy minerals ("black sands") on the northern coast of New South Wales has been known for at least 90 years. The earliest metallurgical operations aimed at the recovery of gold, platinum, tin and monazite. Mainly because of the low grade of these deposits with respect to these minerals, but also due to metallurgical difficulties, such operations were abandoned by about 1895 (Whitworth, 1959). The presence of zircon was recorded quite early (Carne, 1895) but Raggatt (1925) appears to have been the first to report the presence of rutile.The economic exploitation of the deposits was initiated in 1928 when D. H. Newland, State Geologist of New York, made an examination on behalf of The Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Company of America. "Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) used as catalyst which reduces toxic substances in emission gas exhausted from an automobile should extensively be recycled because they are rare metals produced only at the limited regions. The recycling process is to smelt an alumina honeycomb, in which PGM is built, in molten iron with flux such as lime and silica to separate them. PGMs are concentrated in molten iron while alumina in slag.The objective of this study is to understand the factor to concentrate PGMs in liquid iron as much as possible. Fundamental research of the distribution of the PGMs between the slag and liquid iron was carried out to recover the value metals of platinum, palladium and rhodium from the three-way auto catalyst. The distribution ratios of platinum, palladium and rhodium between the Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 slag and liquid iron are from 10-6 to 10-5, and these are concentrated in comparison with slag phase by about 1 million times to the liquid iron at 1873 K. The distribution ratios of platinum between the FexO-CaO-SiO2 slag and liquid iron decrease from 0.1 to 2?10-4 with increasing the CaO content in the slag. The CaO addition to the FexO unary slag is effective in concentrating platinum in molten iron.Based on the distribution ratios obtained in this work, recovery of PGMs was determined. The recovery of platinum, palladium and rhodium increase with increasing the mass ratio, Mmetal/Mslag. In the case of the conditions of Mmetal/Mslag = 0.04, the recoveries of PGMs showed more than 99.97%. The use of liquid iron and carbon saturated liquid iron as the collector metal is advantageous for the PGM recycling of the three-way auto catalyst. We found that PGMs are enriched to the molten iron or the carbon saturated iron and the slag loss of PGMs is negligible small."

An abandened breakwater, located at the rear of No. 2 berth in Dongdu Port area of Xiamen City, was not cleaned thoroughly when the backfilling of sand started. The uncleaned stone layer was about 2 to 3 meters deep, with the average piece of stone weighing about 1 to 3 kN. A large grain storing house, 220X 60m2 in area, was designed and built at the above mentioned complicated site. The foundation of the grain house are made up of the cast-in-situ piles. It is well known that it is difficult for the submarine engineering drill to go down through such large-sized stones. Having com-pared the various plans, a final decision has been made which involves explosions with small amounts of charge plus cone bit in the enlarging of the size of the pores. Such a method has successfully prevented the pores from slumping and made it possible to fulfill the project without any difficulties. This paper also introduces the ways in effectively dealing with each individual stone.

The following note on the mineral association in the ores of the Tennant Creek Goldfield, Northern Territory, is largely based on Mineragraphic Reports Nos. 49, 89, 117 and 193 of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. These reports are the results of the examinations of auriferous specimens from a number of mines of the goldfield and are now supplemented by the examination of further specimens from Mt. Samuel forwarded by Mr. V. G. Martin.The Tennant Creek Goldfield lies in the central portion of the Northern Territory, about Lat. 190 35', Long. 1340 15', on the Overland Telegraph Line and about 369 miles north of Alice Springs. It comprise an area extending about 50 miles east and west, by 30 miles north and south.The geology of the goldfield has been described by Woolnough. (2)The rocks of the area are of pre-Cambrian age, and consist of talcose, chloritic, micaceous and siliceous schists of sedimentary origin, interbedded with flows or dykes of schistose quartz porphyry, and of granites which were intruded subsequent to the regional metarporphism of the area. The rocks are moderately folded, but the beclding tends to be obscured by a pronounced east-west cleavage. The most continuous orebodies run east and west, parallel with this cleavage.Numerous lenses of hematite occur in the schists, with their long axes, parallel to the cleavage, and the gold values of the field are frequently associated with such hematite bodies. The dimensions of these hematite bodies are variable but rarely exceed a length of 300 ft., with an average thickness between 10 and 30 ft.; the original vertical dimensions are thought to be comparable with their length. The lenses tend to occur in groups when they are arranged en echelon both horizontally and in depth; and erosion has exposed individual lenses to different degrees, ranging from incipient exposure to complete removal. The existence of unexposed hematite lenses at depth has been proved by geophysical surveys, coupled with drilling tests. (3)A few of the bodies are pipe-like. Many are surrounded by a casing of brecciated rock, composed of fragments of hematite and shattered country rock, and presumably caused by subsequent earth movements which crushed the country rock against the resistant hematite bodies. In the early days of the field most of the important gold occurences were found within these crushed zones, or, to a less extent, within the hematite bodies themselves.These occurrences appeared to be associated only with those hematite lenses which were intersected by quartz veins or other lines of weakness, of later origin than the crushing. This paper follows that of the Milos Conf, 2002 and examines the collection and reporting of SDIs in the industrial minerals industry in Europe. It compares the characteristics of the GRI Reporting Guidelines, with its Metals and Mining Sector Supplement with those of the EU DG Enterprise Scheme, launched in 2001. The particular issue of SME's and companies which are not publicly traded is examined. The pros and cons of participating in such schemes is a central theme of the paper. The paper concludes that there and many business benefits for these companies in participating and submitting their data. The European Commission Scheme is strongly recommended for companies in the sector which are SME's and not-publicly traded as well as large firms who are listed on European Stock Exchanges.

Detailed investigation was carried out on the dephosphorization of a number of phosphorus-rich manganese or samples of India by leaching with dilute sulphuric acid. Various process parameters like concentration of acid, liquid-solid ratio, temperature of leaching, time of leaching, and particle size of the ore were studied in detail for the three samples of manganese ore from central India, and optimum values were worked out on a laboratory scale. Preliminary studies show that certain ores which are not easily amemlible to appreciable dephosphorization by leaching with dilute sulphuric acid can be made amenable by :roasting to 700-900°C before leaching.

The thermite process, now approximately 80 years old, has heretofore been practiced in ceramic vessels. This paper outlines the successful production of several million pounds of alloy produced in zuater-cooled copper vessels. THE high temperatures necessary to produce fluid high-alumina slags have probably discouraged earlier workers from attempting to utilize water-cooled vessels. The following is a report of the successful application of this method, together with a report of the physical and chemical problems which had to be solved to make the process practical. About 1955, when Reading Alloys was more concerned with the production of ferrotungsten than with most other types of alloys, it was found to be exceedingly difficult to predict the reaction rate that one would experience from one tungsten ore to another . This difficulty was increased for two reasons: the physical state of the ore as received was seldom uniform, and the size of the mass to be reduced is a very important factor in developing the proper mix for the final reaction rate and temperature. For example, the reduction of ferric oxide with aluminum would theoretically produce temperatures of about 2600°C, and, in spite of the losses due to radiation, the energy is quite sufficient to produce a very fluid slag and iron effecting a very clean separation. On the other hand, the reduction of ferrous oxide with aluminum, while it is not as energetic as the first reaction, nevertheless should give temperatures above 2000"C, which should cause separation of alumina and iron, but, in practice, this is not the case and good fluid slag is not obtained. The heat of reaction, calculated from the thermo-dynamic heats of formation of the constituents of the reaction, offers a convenient guide to the feasibility of a thermite reaction. Thus, the values listed in Table I can be used as an approximate guide for estimating the results which may be expected in the reduction of various oxides and combinations of oxides using aluminum as the reducing agent. As a generalization, those reactions releasing approximately 600 cal per g of total mass represent the lower limit at which to expect separation of slag and metal. On the other hand, those reactions which release 1100 to 1200 cal per g are too violent to be used successfully without the addition of considerable inert material, such as lime, fluorspar, and so forth. Reaction rate is also a very important factor. This, of course, is governed very largely by the sizing and intermingling of the oxidant and reductant and by the starting temperature of the reactants. This is why those figures shown in Table I can only be a general guide. Further, it must be understood, that by adding powerful oxidizing agents, such as nitrates, chlorates or metallic oxides, such as molybdenum trioxide or chromium trioxide, certain problems respecting low temperatures are not necessarily solved. This is true in the addition of oxidants, such as sodium chlorate. By adding too high a concentration of sodium chlorate as a booster for a particular reduction, explosions are generated. Generally, they are of an intermittent type so as to give a Roman Candle effect to the reduction itself; with each surge resulting from a minor explosion more and more material is thrown

The National Safety Competition is sponsored and conducted annually by the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, to stimulate greater interest in safety in the mineral-extractive industries and to encourage the development of more effective accident-prevention programs. Since its beginning in 1925, thirty-four safety contests have been conducted. This publication reports results of the 11 annual contests for the period 1948-1958, inclusive. Mineral operations awarded the "Sentinels of Safety" trophy for the best safety record in their competitive group as well as those ranking second, third, fourth, and fifth are listed along with a summary of their achievements in preventing disabling injuries. In addition, this publication contains statistical information reflecting the disabling work-injury experience of all other mines and quarries enrolled in the annual contests. The injury statistics of these operations are arranged in the six groups of the competition and through 1955 are the only data on injury-severity at noncoal mineral operations published by the Bureau of Hines. Recognition of the National Safety Competition in promoting safety has increased steadily during its 34 years. The number of plants participating in these annual competitions increased from 210 in 1925, its first year, to a record of 675 in 1958. The expanding scope of the National Safety Competition indicates that more mines and quarries in the United States are enrolling 90 all available means to promote safety on the job will be used. Safety contests like this are generally recognized, in the field of safety promotion, as an effective way to arouse and hold the interest of employees and officials in accident-prevention programs. They tend to forge individual precautionary acts into group action centered on a common objective, such as winning the ?Sentinels of Safety? trophy.

"Schaft Creek is a calc-alkaline porphyry Cu-Mo-(Au) deposit located in northwestern British Columbia. The deposit formed in a volcanic arc setting, likely on a back-arc rifted continental fragment. It is hosted by Late Triassic basaltic to andesitic volcanic rocks of the Stuhini Group (Stikine Terrane), and is associated with porphyritic granodiorite dikes emanating from the nearby Hickman batholith. The age of the Hickman batholith is approximately constrained here by a composite U-Pb zircon date of 222.1 ± 9.6 Ma, which is in broad agreement with a well-constrained age for mineralization at Schaft Creek of 222.0 ± 0.8 Ma (Re-Os molybdenite). The deposit is in most respects typical of calc-alkaline porphyry systems, but displays silica-poor sericite-chlorite alteration in mafic country rocks in place of classic phyllic altera¬tion. The deposit comprises three distinct, but related, zones: the northern Paramount zone, the Main zone, and the West Breccia zone. Two phases of mineralization are observed. The first phase occurs as hydro-thermal veins and breccias, and minor disseminations. It consists of bornite, chalcopyrite, molybdenite, and pyrite with potassic and sericite-chlorite alteration. The second phase is minor and consists of veins of molybdenite ± specularite, as well as Cu-Pb-Zn sulfide veins without any significant corresponding alteration. Extensive structural modification has affected the deposit both during and after its formation.Schaft Creek est un gîte porphyrique de Cu-Mo-(Au) calco-alkalin situé dans le nord-ouest de la Colombie Britannique. L’âge du batholithe de Hickman est estimé par un âge U-Pb composite sur zircon de 222.1 ± 9.6 Ma, lequel est grossièrement en accord avec l’âge de la minéralisation de Schaft Creek, estimé a 222.0 ± 0.8 Ma (Re-Os sur molybdénite).Ce gisement, bien qu’à plusieurs égards typique des systèmes porphyriques calco-alcalins, présente une altération en séricite-chlorite pauvre en silice dans l’encaissant mafique a la place de l’altération phyllique classique. Ce gîte comprend trois zones distinctes bien que connexes : la zone Paramount au Nord, la zone Principale et la zone West Breccia. Deux phases de minéralisation sont observées. La première phase se présente sous forme de veines et de brèches hydrothermales ainsi qu’en disséminations mineures et consiste en bornite, en chalcopyrite, en molybdénite et en pyrite avec une altération potassique et en séricite-chlorite. La seconde phase est mineure et consiste en veines de molybdénite ± spécularite ainsi qu’en veines de sulfures de Cu-Pb-Zn sans association à une altération particulière. Le gisement a été profondément modifié par la déformation a la fois durant et après sa formation."
