"CdS/CdTe solar cells were built by depositing a 200 nm layer of Sn02:F on glass substrates by the spray pyrolysis (SP) technique, a 500 nm CdS:In layer by the same technique and a 1-1.5 µm CdTe layer by vacuum evaporation. The cells were CdCh heat-treated in nitrogen atmosphere for 30 minutes at 350 -.C. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra were measured at the CdS/CdTe interface for two cells with different values of the CdTe layer's thickness at temperature T = 60 K. A deconvolution peak fit was performed from which it is found that the peaks are characteristic of the solid solution CdSxTei-x· The parabolic relation that relates the bandgap energy with the composition was used to estimate x, where xis [S]/([Te]+[S]) and [Te], [S] are the concentrations of Te and S atoms respectively. The results show that the interface is smooth and the change of the bandgap occurs gradually.IntroductionCdS/CdTe heterojunctions represent a combination of materials promising various applications, and for solar energy conversion in the first place [1]. In photovoltaic cells the CdS material acts as a wide bandgap window. Direct bandgap CdTe with high optical absorption coefficient is used as an absorber [1]. Solar cells with efficiencies of 10 to 16% have been obtained with CdTe grown by close space sublimation, electrodeposition, vacuum evaporation and rf sputtering methods [2]. In this work the CdTe layer was prepared by vacuum evaporation because it results with films of minimum impurities, while the Sn02:F and CdS:In layers were deposited by the spray pyrolysis technique because it is a low cost method which enables intentional doping and large area thin films."

Precipitates consisting of amorphous ferrihydrite and crystalline goethite have been prepared by aging hydrolyzed Fe (III) solutions at room temperature. The precipitates have been characterized by x-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis. The amorphous ferrihydrite transforms to goethite with time. The ferrihydrite to goethite transformation is affected by the presence of small amounts of copper or nickel coprecipitated with the iron. .The addition of copper decreases the amount of goethite at a given aging time and increases the amount of coprecipitate which is initially dissolved in sulfuric acid, but it does not seem to affect the dissolution of the crystalline part'. It is proposed that adsorption of copper hydroxo species on goethite nuclei delays the ferrihydrite to goethite transformation. The effect of nickel is less dramatic than that of copper. Apparently a portion of the added nickel is adsorbed on the goethite crystallite surface rather than incorporated into the goethite lattice.

"Today, foundries are moving towards the use of models and design tools to gain a competitive advantage in producing castings of high desired quality. This leads to a growing alliance between foundries, software developers and researchers seeking to model, visualize and understand the phenomena taking place during the casting process. In addition, there is a need to develop affordable techniques to produce parts in small lot sizes. This leads to the development of a Flexible Manufacturing System consisting of: (1) up-front computer-aided engineering; (2) computer integrated proto typing with solid freeform fabrication; and (3) fabrication of the actual mold and related equipment to cast the part.This paper discusses some of the developments that are taking place today in the areas of modeling the physical phenomena during the casting process as well as towards developing a Flexible Manufacturing System for producing cast parts. Areas that require most work involve prediction of defects and mechanical properties using simplified analyses. In addition, electronic data sharing for collaborative engineering between geographically dispersed team members is also discussed. Case studies are presented showing successes as well as failures.IntroductionCasting, one of the oldest forms of metalworking, has recently seen a flurry of developments in the area of solidification modeling. These developments have come about after the realization that, in order to stay competitive, foundries need to reduce their scrap rate and production costs, and increase casting quality. Even though this is not new knowledge for foundry engineers, the tools to help them achieve this goal are just being developed and put in place for use by foundries. Several state-of-the-art software packages are currently available to analyze the solidification behavior in complex shaped castings. These packages make use of several different approaches for solving the various problems associated with casting processes. The overall architecture of a comprehensive solidification modeling system is shown in Figure 1."

The Bureau of Mines has conducted beneficiation, carbothermic reduction, and leaching tests of Mn oxide ores as part of its evaluation of the Mn and Co resources of the West- Central Arkansas District. The major Mn oxides in the ore include cryptomelane, psilomelane, pyrolusite, and lithiophorite. Cobalt is contained within the Mn oxides. Nonbeneficiated ore was reduced at 800' C with coal and leached in ammonium sulfate and ammonium carbonate leach liquors. Ore concentrates were calcined at 600" C prior to reduction under the same conditions as the raw ore. Head analyses reported up to 21 ptt Mn and 0.11 pct Co. Extractions of 70 to 90 pct Mn and 40 to 60 pct Co were achieved.

The reduction smelting of nickel laterites produces slag, consisting principally of the chemical components MgO, "FeO", SiO2, and A12O3, and ferro-nickel alloy. Despite the fact that the phase equilibria for the ternary MgO-"FeO"-SiO2 up to 1500°C is well established limited experimental data are available in the MgO-"FeO"-SiO2-Al2O3 system, which is relevant to commercial operation of the process. A methodology has been developed for the experimental investigation of the liquidus temperatures for the multi-component system MgO-"FeO"-SiO2-Al2O3-Cr2O3 in equilibrium with metallic iron. Experiments have been carried out using high temperature equilibration, quenching, followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA). Liquidus temperatures have been determined in the silica primary phase field in the composition ranges directly relevant to the Cerro Matoso S.A. ferro-nickel smelting slag. Liquidus isotherms have been determined for temperatures between 1450 to 1600°C. The study enables the liquidus to be described for a range of MgO/FeO ratios. "Zarafshan/Newmont is a 50/25/25 joint venture between Newmont Gold and the State Committee for Geology and Mineral Resources, and Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combinat, two entities of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The Zarafshan/Newmont joint venture consists of a heap leaching operation which will process 220 million metric tonnes of existing low-grade oxide ore stockpiles (averaging 0.036 oz Au/t) from the Muruntau mine. Net recovery over the 17-year life of the project is expected to be 4.8 million ounces of gold.The plant construction started in October 1993 and operations commenced on May 25, 1995. The crushing plant consists of four stages of crushing and screening to produce a 95% passing 3.35 mm product, followed by heap leaching and gold recovery by the Merrill-Crowe process. The dore metal is refined at the Muruntau refinery. All gold produced by the joint venture is sold on the world market. IntroductionThe Muruntau mine and nearby town of Zarafshan are located in the center of the Kyzylkum desert, 250 miles west of Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan. Following a mining conference in Moscow in 1990, a Newmont geologist was among the first team of westerners to visit the Muruntau Mine, the second largest gold producer in the former Soviet Union. At Muruntau, they found 220 million tonnes of low grade gold ore that had been stockpiled during the previous 25 years. In February, 1992, six months after Uzbekistan's independence, Newmont signed a 50/50 joint venture agreement with the Uzbek government to use heap leach technology to process the ore. The feasibility study was completed in November of 1992. Plant construction started in October, 1993 and operations commenced on May 25, 1995.Newmont Metallurgical Services performed metallurgical studies to obtain heap leach process design criteria parameters. The initial metallurgical study on 20 grab samples is the subject of this paper."

Several novel types of chemically modified chitosan were prepared by immobilizing functional groups of EDTA and DTPA onto polymer matrices of chitosan in order to investigate their potential for mutual adsorptive separation among rare earths. Following the batch wise adsorption tests to elucidate their basic adsorption characteristics for rare earths, mutual separation was carried out using a column packed with the chemically modified chitosan. The separation between Sm(III) and Y(III) was tested using a column packed with EDTA-type chitosan while mutual separation among 4 light rare earths, La(III), Ce(III), Pr(III) and Nd(III) was tested using a column packed with DTPA-type chitosan. In both cases, satisfactory mutual separation was achieved by the chromatographic operation using these chemically modified chitosan.

Chanarcillo is a historically well-known silver deposit which produced over 100 million ounces. High grade vein-type mineralization is confined to a prominent set of nearly vertical, NNW to NE fractures that intersected limestones, andesites and tuffs of Early Cretaceous age. A significant amount of disseminated silver mineralization extends laterally outward from the fractures for considerable distances in pyritic carbonaceous limestones, whereas more competent volcanic beds rarely contain lateral mineralization. Local exposures of skarns are mostly barren. Silver and minor base metal mineralization was probably formed peripheral to a granodioritic intrusion inferred to exist at shallow depth. Part of this intrusion is exposed nearby where it contains significant hydrothermal mineralization and alteration. This intrusion was dated at 83.8 m.y.

Inco pioneered the use of tonnage oxygen in non ferrous metallurgy when it commissioned the first industrial oxygen f1ash smelting process for the treatment of copper concentrates in the ear 1y fifties. This techno logica1 innovation was followed by other applications of technical oxygen. Inco is currently implementjng a Sulfur Dioxide Abatement Program designed to reduce SO2 emissions from the smelter by 60% in 1994. The new flowsheet includes new equipment for the oxygen flash smelting of Cu-Ni concentrates and for flash conversion of chalcocite. Oxygen smelting and converting technology will lead to a substantial decrease in use of fossil fuels and to generation of high strength S02 off gases suitable for efficient fixation in a new acid plant.

In terms of the reduction cell technology itself, the lowest sustained energy consumption is just below 13DC kWh/kg, or 50% energy efficient.For 15 years Comalco Aluminium Ltd. in Australia has been engaged in developing and testing reduction cells that use a refractory hard cathode, composed of a TiBif carbon composite coating over a carbon cathode. This technology has the potential to reduce energy consumption significantly while simultaneously increasing the life of the cells, which is currently limited by wear rate of the conventional carbon cathodes used throughout the worldIntroductionThe successful development of an aluminium wettable cathode technology affords the opportunity to the cell designer and smelter operator to fundamentally change the physical operating characteristics of the Hall-Heroult process. With this revolutionary capability in hand, published papers and patents have indicated that the technology may be exploited in a wide variety of ways to improve the economic performance of aluminium smelting process. Phelps Dodge, Inc. (PD) is currently developing a lateritic nicke/Vcobalt deposit in Madagascar. Hazen Research, Inc. provides technical assistance to PD to investigate recovery processes for nickel and cobalt. Various process options were evaluated in laboratory experiments and pilot plant operations. The process selected for the feasibility study consists of feed preparation, high-pressure acid leach, countercurrent decantation wash, sulfide precipitation, sulfide dissolution, solvent extraction, ion exchange, and electrowinning. Among these unit processes, high-pressure acid leach, sulfide precipitation, and sulfide dissolution are applications of pressure technologies. Process development work and design criteria for commercial operations of these unit processes are presented in this paper. Concerns related to scaling in the high-pressure acid leach and the sulfide precipitation processes are discussed. Corrosion of various metal coupons under these environments was examined.

"Mathematical modelling of the precipitation process requires that the kinetics of crystal growth, nucleation and agglomeration be known. This paper reviews the current state of knowledge on these precipitation sub-processes (ie. growth, nucleation and agglomeration) and describes a number of experimental techniques for estimating their kinetics. The experimental methods used to generate the precipitation data and the data analysis techniques used to extract the kinetics information from the data are discussed separately. There is no universal ""best"" technique for determining the kinetics. However, studies on multi-crystal systems are more reliable for modelling purposes than are single crystal studies. The selection of a technique will depend on which sub-processes are present. A problem with all kinetics studies is that there is generally a large uncertainty in the estimated kinetic parameters. This stems from the scatter in the experimental data being further propagated by the mathematical techniques used to extract the kinetic parameters.IntroductionCrystallisation operations, including precipitation, are widely used in a number of hydrometallurgical processes to recover a desired component or to remove an undesired impurity. The goals of industrial precipitation processes are to maximise the recovery while maintaining product quality (generally product crystal size distribution, purity and morphology and product handling properties). Knowledge of the precipitation mechanisms and kinetics is invaluable for designing new precipitators or for improving existing units. The mechanistic and kinetic information is generally incorporated into mathematical precipitator models, which are then used for process design and optimisation."

Coatings of TiCIFe have been produced by Reactive Plasma Spraying using ilmenite ore concentrate as the feedstock powder and methane as the reactive gas. A free energy minimization analysis of the ilmenite-methane system is presented. The coatings have been characterized by x-ray diffraction and SEM. The microstructure of the coatings indicates good interparticle cohesion. The composition of the coating is deficient in iron compared to the initial Fe to Ti ratio found in ilmenite.

Success of the environmentally benign semiconductor manufacturing depends on the cost-effective integration of the principles of reduce, recover, reuse and recycle from source material to final product disposal. Increasing demand combined with current shortage of polysilicon provided unique opportunities to recover the silicon waste, caused by various defects, in wafer manufacturing process. Current practices relating to recovery and reuse of waste silicon produced, from crystal growth process to finally polished and epitaxially deposited silicon wafer, at Mitsubishi Silicon America is presented. Future plan to recycle the process generated silicon fines produced during the intermediate steps of the wafer manufacturing process such as grinding, slicing, lapping and polishing is also discussed.

"The Copper Isasmelt process has been developed over the past 15 years by Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). The first two commercial plants were commissioned in mid 1992.The results of four heat balances on the Mount Isa plant are presented. At a smelting rate of 98 t/hr of chalcopyrite concentrate plus 14 t/hr reverts, the total heat generated was -91MW. Approximately 39% of this energy came from coal, while 50% of the energy reported to the process waste gas. To a first approximation the furnace is near chemical equilibrium.The impurity distribution in the Mount Isa plant was presented. Approximately 91 % As, 85% Cd, 75% Bi, 68% Zn, 60% Sb and Tl, 45% Pb and 30% Te in concentrate was eliminated from the matte.The ""bubble"" frequency of the gas cavity below the foot of the lance was measured at -2. 1Hz. Side bands displaced by -l.lHz modulated the bubble frequency. This was consistent with radial gravity wave motion in the slag bath. The two processes, gas bubbling and wave motion appeared to be coupled together; the bubble frequency was twice the slop wave frequency. IntroductionCopper Isasmelt has been developed over the past 15 years by Mount Isa Mines Limited and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. "The situation of the Ti-V-Magnetite samples reduced with microwave has been investigated in laboratory. Firstly, the paper focuses on the heating behaviors of vanadium-titanium magnetite and characteristics of carbothermic reduction of V-Ti-magnetite in the microwave field. The effect of concentrate's size, quality on heating behaviors and reduction processes were researched. Results show that microwave heating may be a new heating resource replace of carbonic combustion reaction in reducing reaction. When the allocation of carbon is (16.7-30)%, carbothermic reduction of V-Ti-magnetite in the microwave field can proceed; with the increasing of carbon mixed, the metallization rate increases; and Fe, V can be reduced from their oxides in the microwave field; Titanic low oxide can be reduced from TiO2.1. IntroductionThe resource of Ti-V-Magnetite is abundant in the western area of Panzhihua in China, so far a mineral deposit of 4.64 billion tons have been proved up, it contains 14.75 million tons of V2O S which accounted for 87% of the vanadium and 5.93 hundred million tons of TiO2 accounted for 94% of the titanium resource respectively in China. The previous study proved that the major composition of mineral of the Ti-V-magnetite are Ti-magnetite, limonite, iron spinel, magnesium spinel etc, and the main elements of the Ti-V-magnetite in this area are Fe, Ti, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Ga, Sc etc[1] Due to the restrict of the BF-BOF process technical, during the smelting of the iron, the level of extracting the vanadium, titanium as well as other metal elements is limited. This results serious wasting of resources. To develop a new reduction process of Ti-V-magnetite is on the agenda, the microwave assistant reduction could meets this need, based on its characteristic of easy controlling of heating rate. To make use of the microwave energy to substitute the released heat sources of carbon combustion with air, use the solid phase state reduction at a relative lower temperature, make the beneficial element in Ti-V-magnetite transferred into the metal phase, then separated from the impurity. It is well worth to point out that once the microwave based reduction method has its industrial scale, it will take an outstanding position by its less release of carbon dioxide. This new environment-friendly process will play a vital role in the development of social industry and economy."

In order to increase the service life of large scale coke dry quenching furnaces, the damage mechanism of lining was investigated, and the structure and properties of lining refractories used in cooling section were researched. The results showed that the abrasive wear volume of lining bricks at one fourth height section under skew tunnel was smaller than other sections. The wear loss of mullite brick and dense clay brick used in the lining of cooling section were respectively 8.02 cm3 and 11.65 cm3 in fifteen minutes. The mullite brick was laid with clay brick alternatively. By the different wear rate, the surface of lining was rough and uneven in the later service life, and short brick was easily dropped from lining. During the service, the basis wore off more easily than the aggregate. It is necessary to improve the wear resistance property, which will increase the service life of cooling section’s lining for coke dry quenching furnaces.

In this paper, the practice of separating precious metals from base metals in gold-antimony alloy by selective chlorination leaching under controlling potential in China has been introduced in detail. The precious metals and the base metals can be separated completely when the complex gold-antimony alloy is treated by this process. The impurity metals were removed effectively since the leaching efficiencies of copper, nickel and antimony are over 99%, with direct recovery of gold being 99.83% that is about 20% higher than that of the original process and silver, antimony, copper and nickel are also recovered effectively. The gold grade of the resulting crude gold powder can reach to 94%.The new process has been applied in the treatment of gold-antimony alloy for two years, and many former procedures have been cancelled, such as electrolysis, Anode slime leaching by nitric acid, smelting in crucible and blowing in muffle. The new process is more shorten, lower cost and friendly to the circumstance comparing to the original process.

Softening and melting experiments were conducted on four kinds of imported lump ores named A-D, under different temperature intervals within the self-developed visualization high temperature furnace. By calculating the reduction and shrinking degree under different intervals, softening and melting indexes were determined. These ores all expanded firstly followed by shrinkage with the temperature increasing. The difference of lump ore’s own characteristic led to different softening and melting behavior. The results showed that the looser the structure was, the better the reducibility will be. The compact structure and good reducibility led to high expansion rate. The beginning softening temperature declined and the ending softening temperature increased because of high porosity, which resulted in wide softening temperature interval. The charging ratio of lump ore A should be improved. Lump ore B should be distributed in the center of the blast furnace. Lump ores C and D should be used less.

The use of natural fibers with polymeric resins has spread rapidly. In order to improve the mechanical properties of material, in this work, two variables were used: mercerization and electron beam irradiation. This paper describes the preparation and characterization of biocomposites that were prepared in two different routes using green high density polyethylene (HDPE) and Brazil nut pod fiber (BNPF): the first was to irradiate the composite with 150 kGy and the second was to irradiate the matrix with 15 kGy followed by composite preparation. In both cases mercerized and non-mercerized fibers were used. The irradiation process was carried out using a 1.5 MeV electron beam accelerator, at room temperature and in the presence of air. The material was characterized to evaluate the effect of treatment on mechanical properties of material.
