Introduction As the world economies continue to face an increased demand for natural resources to support growth in the established and developing world, the western mining industry has expanded its operations and funding of mineral developments into new and relatively unexplored regions of the world. Mining companies worldwide, in order to grow in a global economy, are now actively exploring and developing mineral resources in the emerging markets of South and Central America and most recently have expanded activities throughout Asia. South East Asia Resources (S.E.A. Resources) has recognized the vast resource potential offered by countries such as China, India and Indonesia, Asia's main driving forces of economic growth and has made a commitment to be actively involved in the area. These countries rich in mineral resources, represent some of the highly prospective and underexplored regions on earth. Their vast potential has been underestimated because of political reasons and overlooked as Central and South America still continue to be the focus of exploration for many mining companies. Most of these Asian countries have faced a prolonged period of political unrest and it has not been until recently that they have begun to enjoy a relatively stable political climate which has encouraged foreign investment, growth and economic development. These countries are in need of capital to develop their infrastructure and market economies. Their wealth in resources is one of the best methods to achieve their goals. Gold is usually one of the first targets to be extracted from developing economies. Equivalent-sized gold projects tend to cost less to develop and require less supporting infrastructure than base metals. These projects are easier to finance and, most important of all, tend to give a quicker return on investment than that offered by base metals. They also provide the economy with precious foreign exchange, international investment and the technology required to build the country. Following is a graph representing the global re-allocation of the total capital investment on the twenty largest gold projects now under construction with the total for those under construction in 1990.

"Shale gas has become an increasingly important clean energy, which has been explored worldwide in recent decades. Supercritical CO2 acts as fracturing fluid for shale gas production. The safety monitoring is essential to prevent any kinds of leakage from the reservoir as the supercritical CO2 physically stored hundred kilometres underground. Seismic tomography is an imaging technique that uses induced seismic waves to create three dimensional images of the subsurface. It is an effective monitoring method to evaluate the caprock integrity in the carbon dioxide sequestration storage (CCS). In this experimental research, a simulated uniaxial compressive load is applied on a granite sample to analyze the stress redistribution for long-term in-situ caprock integrity during CO2 injection. The induced seismic waves are recorded and seismic events are traced based on the Geiger algorithm. The frequency of seismic events correlates with the caprock failure evolution. The acquired seismic data is divided into four regimes based on the frequency of seismic events and the failure process to examine the failure evolution. Furthermore, the travel time and distance is plotted to analyze the variation of velocity. Finally, the double difference tomography (TomoDD) algorithm using arrival time is adopted to recalculate the locations of seismic events and velocity structure in each regime. The results indicate that the passive seismic system can map the caprock stress distribution and allow for imaging of the caprock integrity. TomoDD exhibits sound improvements to relocate seismic events both in relative and absolute locations as well as to characterize the local velocity structure. The study further reveals that seismic monitoring along with TomoDD could evaluate the caprock failure accurately in the CCS.Introduction To reduce the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, CO2 capture and sequestration (CCS) has been suggested to as a means of continuing to use fossil fuel resources while offsetting their negative environmental impacts (Eiken et al 2011). A positive CCS project should retain 99% of the injected supercritical CO2 (pressure is greater than 7.38 MPa and temperature is above 31.04? and a density is of about 700 kg/m3) over at least 100 years (Davidson et al 2005). As large quantities of supercritical carbon dioxide are being injected into full scale storage projects, caprock stress is redistributing and the leakage could occur anywhere over a wide storage area (Hou et al 2012). Acoustic waves are emitted from the caprock, as it fractures due to the CO2 injection, which can be detected by passive seismic sensors (Shitashima et al 2013). Tomography techniques are advantageous for imaging the integrity of the caprock in the CCS projects. Velocity tomography uses waves to model entities based on the arrival time of waves (Westman et al 2001, Westman 2004, Luxbacher et al 2008). Seismic tomography is a data inference technique that exploits information contained in seismic records to constrain 2D or 3D models of the Earth's interior. It generally requires the solution of a large inverse problem to obtain a heterogeneous seismic model that is consistent with field observations (Kudryavtsev et al 2012)."

The asbestiform habit is most commonly developed in certain amphiboles and chrysotile, but other minerals also may crystallize with this unusual habit. The habit may be characterized by (1) a fibril structure, single or twinned crystals of very small widths (generally less than 0.5 pm), which have grown with a common fiber axis direction, but are disoriented in the other crystallographic directions; (2) anomalous optical properties, primarily parallel extinction; (3) unusual tensile strength; (4) high aspect ratio; and (51 flexibility. In addition, there is evidence to indicate that some amphibole asbestos may have unusual surface properties. ASBESTOS AND THE ASBESTIFORM HABIT Asbestos is defined as a group of highly fibrous silicate minerals that readily separate into long, thin, strong fibers of sufficient flexibility to be woven, are heat resistant and chemically inert, and possess a high electric insulation, and therefore are suitable for uses where in- combustible, nonconducting, or chemically resistant material is required (Gary, et al., 1974). The most common minerals that may occur with the asbestiform habit are chrysotile, grunerite (amosite], riebeckite (crocidolite), actinolite, anthophyllite, and tremolite; although the development of this habit among these minerals is rare. Other minerals, most notably other amphiboles, can occur in this habit, but no others have been mined commercially as asbestos. All asbestos is confined to metamorphic rocks, even though other habits of the amphiboles are common in igneous rocks. Slip fiber veins are the most common deposits (South African amosite, Canadian chrysotile, etc.), but mass fiber deposits also may occur such as California chrysotile or mountain leather. Field relations and experimental data support the hypothesis that metasomatism is the dominant process in the formation of asbestos fibers, amphibole as well as serpentine. The crystal habit of a mineral is the shape or form a crystal or aggregate of crystals take on during crystallization. The asbestiform habit has a number of characteristics that differentiate it from other habits. Chief among these is the fibril structure.Afibri1 is a single or twinned crystal with a very small width, generally less than 0.5 pm, and an extremely high aspect ratio; bundles of fibrils may have lengths reaching into the cm. Fibrils share a common crystal growth direction along the long axis of the fiber, but appear to be disoriented with respect to one another in the other crystallographic directions. The structure of the individual fibrils, and the organization of fibrils within a fiber may differ among the various types of asbestos. The fibril structure of asbestos is probably a factor in controlling a number of secondary properties that include high tensile strength, flexibility sufficient for weaving, and anomalous optical properties. The high tensile strength of asbestos is quite remarkable, exceeding that of the ordinary varieties by a thousand fold (Zoltai, 1978). In part, this may be attributed to the lack of defect on the fibril surfaces (Zoltai, 19781, but some contribution also must come from the existance of bundles and the nature of the ordering of and forces among the fibrils. The flexibility is not only enhanced by the fact that the fibrils may slip past one another, but by their small widths and extreme aspect ratios. However, structural defects parallel to the fiber axis also may contribute to this property. Among the common commercial asbestos types, the greatest flexibility is found in chrysotile and the least in grunerite asbestos (amosite), varying inversely with fibril thick- ness. In addition, at least for chrysotile, composition also may affect the flexibility of the fibers. Finally, most asbestos minerals are mono- clinic, but optically display parallel extinction (Heinrich, 1965, and Wylie, 1978). Introduction There is a misconception that mineral-project economic evaluations in the former Soviet Union are either nonexistent or very limited. This is not the case. In fact, there are at least two basic methods that can be utilized to evaluate the vast mineral resources of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Evaluation procedures are based either on a comparison to known projects, which may rely on limited available data, or on potential-profit calculations, which generally uses more extensive databases. Significant philosophical differences between these systems and those utilized in the Western world include the following: •Under the centralized-government system, the economic evaluation of a mineral project was based on artificially determined mineral prices and costs. Every ten to 12 years, prices for concentrates and metals were established by the Council of Ministers and remained unchanged until the next reconsideration of prices . •The time value of invested money was not considered to be important under these "stable" prices, and inflation was assumed to be nonexistent in the planned economy. •An overestimation of the value of social and economic factors such as keeping the local population employed and providing the country with strategic minerals biased the economic evaluations of projects. Sequence of exploration Geological exploration in the CIS countries typically includes two major phases: prospecting and exploration. Prospecting consists of the following: •Regional geological studies. •General prospecting. •Prospecting. •Prospect evaluation. Regional geological studies are conducted within large territories and utilize satellite images, deep seismic zoning and other state-of-the-art methods. Geological and geophysical maps on a scale of from 1:200000 to 1:1000000 are developed to help identify regional anomalies and mineral prospective areas. The areas of primary interest are then subjected to general prospecting, beginning with geological mapping of the area at 1:50000 (1:25000) scale. The prospecting phase determines mineral potential based on further geological mapping (mostly 1:10000 scale), surface geophysics and geochemistry. Finally, the most attractive targets are subjected to further detailed evaluation (prospect evaluation) to help identify "possible" projects by means of trenching and wide-spaced drilling. The results of the prospect evaluation are analyzed and conclusions regarding the economical potential of the project are drawn. If the initial-prospecting phase results are positive and the prospect is recognized as economical, it then moves into preliminary exploration, which is followed by detailed exploration. Preliminary exploration determines the feasibility of the project on the basis of limited data. For example, in some underground projects, the initial exploration drilling and tunneling is done at two or three times wider spacing than would be required by the assumed mining method. Detailed exploration focuses on preparing the project for mining development, such as completing drilling and tunneling, particularly in the portion of the ore body to be first mined. During the project's mining phase, further exploration is usually conducted along the flanks of the mineralized structures and deeper sections of the ore body. Finally, during exploitation, it is sometimes necessary to delineate the ore body within the mining-block limits. A comparison between the United States (US) sequence of exploration activities and the CIS system is given in the Table 1. There is no "additional" and "exploitation" exploration shown in the US system, but it is common knowledge that all mineral projects are subjected to "additional" and "exploitation" exploration while being mined. The full importance of tailings disposal is yet to be realized by the mining industry, but our awareness of its present and future implications is growing faster, perhaps, than any single phase of ore processing. Few engineers can look very far into the future because of the complexity of the problems that may confront us if we project from the general indifference of past years through what we are already being expected to correct in existing operations, to confrontations with new statutes and an awakened public in any new plants hence- forth. The mistakes of the past have not been limited to the United States nor even to other countries of the Western Hemisphere. Indeed, all continents and subcontinents have suffered from myopia in releasing the tailings without retaining responsibility. However, the US as one of the world's great leaders in technology has a particularly unimpressive record. It may be safely generalized that the degree of control applied to the tailings of a milling operation has depended upon several factors more important than national boundaries. Thus in arid and semiarid climates no incentive was needed other than the scarcity of water to create a permanent and stable lodgment for mill tailings. On the other hand. where water has been plentiful. the temptation to let the tailings run into a river or lake or ocean (at least at certain times of the year) was often irresistible. So we find that modem tailings disposal in the southwest deserts of this country, with one or two notable exceptions where very serious breaks seem to occur at regular intervals, is satisfactory according to the standards of the 195QF and 1960s. while in various operations in Idaho, Michigan, western Colorado. Newfoundland, and elsewhere the record has been less praiseworthy. In the same way, cyanide plants which did not concern themselves about leakage, seepage, spillage, or wastage of tailings pulps with solutions containing toxic levels of free or combined cyanide soon heard a demand for better control. In consequence the industry has seen a growing use of cyanide regeneration of tailings or wash solutions, elimination of leakage, and careful structuring of tailing dams. The chemical and thermal qualities of tailing waters have occasionally been a spur to good tailings management. Some tailings disposal problems for example, the southeastern Florida phosphate clays and the Bayer red muds-have been given the intensive study they merited, but not always with much success.

INTRODUCTION Some of the most famous and graphic environmental incidents have arisen from mineral extraction, including oil spills, the Reserve Mining asbestos tailings case, Kaiparowitts surface mining and coal combustion, and other environmental causes celebre. The remote location of much of the mining industry to some extent reduces the human health hazards from pollution, but often times the pristine locale in which mining is conducted provides a sharp contrast to the impacting industry. This prompts questions as to what the research literature says about the true costs and benefits of environmental compliance. We survey the state of this knowledge. Where possible, we discuss studies focused on mining and related industries, such as primary metals production. In many cases, how- ever, the studies pertain to the economy as a whole. For present purposes, the mining industry is defined as companies engaged in the production and refinement of minerals, including metals, fuels, and nonmetallics (e.g., phosphate, sand and gravel). There are several stages in mining, with environmental effects occuring at every stage. The exploration stage comprises the period from initial prospecting to the point where the deposit has been located and delineated in sufficient detail to permit development decisions to be made. Geophysical and geochemical surveys, diamond drilling programs, and exploratory stripping and excavation are activities that may be employed during this stage. Some forms of prospecting are relatively benign, al- though even airborne surveys and motor vehicles generate noise pollution. Roads and the passage of vehicles and equipment affect land surfaces and vegetation, and attract heavier backcountry use. Clearings, stream crossings, and borrow pits can lead to increased erosion and sedimentation of streams. Geological survey grids disrupt vegetation and appearance. Moreover, prospecting can involve the excavation and stripping of overburden, resulting in soil and vegetation disruption as well as in- creased sedimentation of streams and lakes. The effects of exploration are often temporary, and frequently less severe than for other activities. Nevertheless, exploration-related impacts vary with the intensity and type of exploration effort, and can be significant. During the development stage of mining, shafts are sunk, pits excavated, buildings erected, and transportation facilities established. Dust, noise, and other socioeconomic and environmental impacts are generated by the relatively large and sudden influx of people, equipment, and activity. Surface disturbance and solid waste are generated by development, and liquid wastes form when mines are dewatered. The extraction phase is associated with a variety of environmental impacts. These impacts may differ for surface and underground mines. In surface mining, surface disturbance is obviously a major consequence. Piles of overburden and waste accumulation mar land surfaces. INTRODUCTION My first major involvement on a rock mine slope stability project was in 1966 after I had become a principal of Golder Brawner & Associates in Vancouver, Canada. I received a request from Kennecott to evaluate two serious rock slope failures adjacent to the concentrator on their British Columbia molybdenum property near Alice Arm, BC, which was under construction. A rock slope up to 200 ft* high had been excavated at a design angle of 700. The inspection indicated that several large blocks of about 1000 cu yd each had failed on steeply inclined joint surfaces. Stability was reduced by extensive seepage caused by heavy rainfall. In addition, considerable overbreak had occurred, indicating excessive blasting had been used to excavate the slope. A program was developed to rock bolt potentially unstable blocks that could slide on dipping discontinuities. Some rock was scaled back to the inclined joints, and drain holes were drilled to reduce water pressures. The project was completed successfully and within reasonable economics. As a result of this success, enquiries were received regarding other mining projects. This indicated the potential demand for rock slope engineering. As a result, I took one month off to meet and discuss rock mechanics and slope stability with various people internationally. These included D. Coates in Canada, E. Hoek in England, K. John and L. Mueller in Germany, M. Rocha in Portugal, and the US Bureau of Mines in Denver, CO. Early misconceptions Based on involvement in projects during the next few years, it was concluded that there were a considerable number of misconceptions that existed among some geologists and mining engineers dealing with surface rock mechanics. Some of these included: • Water is a lubricant. This is incorrect. Water reduces the shear strength along discontinuities due to buoyancy, which reduces frictional strength. It also reduces the cohesion of clayey-type rocks. • The optimum pit slope angle in rock is 45°. The optimum slope angle for safety and economics is variable and is influenced particularly by structural geology, water pressures, mine blasting practices, and the depth and degree of weathering. • The flattest angle for slope stability is dictated by the angle of repose of broken rock, about 370. Where clayey-type rocks or clayey infill in discontinuities exists, failure can occur at much flatter angles, requiring flatter slopes or artificial stabilization. • Uniaxial and triaxial tests provide the necessary shear strength parameters to design rock slopes. Most failures in rock slopes are controlled by directional discontinuities. Therefore, the direct shear test is the correct test to evaluate strength parameters for most problems.

Although fraught with problems of completeness and comparability, statistical measures of mineral exploration in the United States point downward for 1985 and 1986. Exploration expenditures in the US domestic and Canadian companies have dropped steadily from a 1981 peak of about $400 million to about $190 million in 1985, according to a recent survey of exploration statistics by the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG). These totals have been adjusted to account for differences in the estimated coverage of exploration activity by each year's SEG survey. This survey is now supported by the US Bureau of Mines and the US Geological Survey (USGS). The drop in current dollar amounts does not take into account the effects of inflation, which would make the decline even more substantial. Metals Economics Group of Boulder, CO reported in its Mine Development Bimonthly that announced exploration budgets for 1986 indicated an even larger drop for the past year. Worldwide expenditures for companies covered by the report dropped from about $800 million to $750 million from 1984 to 1985 and plummeted to about $600 million in 1986. Exploration activity has been declining since about 1981. This has been due in large part to low prices for base and ferrous metals. Exploration budgets of mining subsidiaries of oil companies have plunged as parent companies try to conserve cash in the face of the sharpest decline in oil prices in nearly 40 years. Mining subsidiaries of petroleum firms that were either liquidated or divested recently include Anaconda (Arco), Getty Mining (Texaco), and Cyprus Minerals (Amoco). Exploration expenditures in Canada increased in 1984 in regions where gold is a traditional target. But there was little change in 1985, based on preliminary statistics from a federal government report (Energy, Mines and Resources Mineral Bulletin MR 211, 1986). Claim staking in Canada dropped 23% from 1983 to 1984 and declined slightly in 1985. Diamond drilling increased in 1984 to the record levels of 1980 and 1981. The ratio of exploration to development expenditures in Canada, however, fell from a 1981 peak of 0.9 to about 0.5 in 1984. The report also indicated that, since 1981, there has been a massive write-off of reserves with high production costs. Reserve levels of all major metals were down since 1981. Precious metals exploration accounts for an increasing share of total mineral exploration. For example, the SEG data show that 90% of 1985 US exploration expenses by domestic mining companies were devoted to base and precious metals, compared with only 51% in 1980. The restructuring of the mining industry has been accompanied by a decrease in response to the last two SEG annual surveys, but the trend towards precious metals was already established in earlier years. Trade journal reports suggest that the reduction of long-term interest rates has encouraged the mining industry to make cost-reducing capital investments in existing mines to maintain competitiveness. This is consistent with the observations that metals explorations in 1986 was characterized not by announcements of "grassroots" discoveries, but by on-property exploration on identified mines or prospects. In an effort to cut costs, gold mining companies have been following up on low cost production opportunities in their prospect inventories. Short-term, low risk, heap leach operations that can produce rapid returns on investment have been pursued. Overview Coal production in the first half of 1982 remained near the high levels begun in mid-1981. Production then fell sharply during the latter part of the year due to recession-weakened demand. Even so, 1982 coal production was estimated at 756 Mt (833.4 million st), a record high that exceeded 1980's previous production record of 752.7 Mt (829.7 million st). Though 1982 coal production was substantially below industry expectations, the attained production represented a modest achievement in view of the recession's severity. In 1982, the gross national product declined 1.8%, its worst performance in 36 years. The recession, along with mild weather, improved energy efficiency, and conservation efforts caused the nation's energy use to drop 4.1%. With the iron and steel, construction, and auto industries experiencing production declines, industrial energy use fell 10.8%. The extent to which the nation's economic slump affected coal markets in 1982 varied: • total domestic coal use declined 3.4%; • exports remained strong for most of the year; • electric utility coal use declined for the first time in 25 years; • coal use at coke plants declined by one-third; and • coal use in other industrial sectors stayed surprisingly near the 1981 level. Coal Use Domestic coal use totaled 641.8 Mt (707.5 million st) in 1982,22 .9 Mt (25.2 million st) below the 1981 level. Nearly all the decline occurred at coke plants where use dropped to 37.1 Mt (40.9 million st) in 1982 from 55.3 Mt (61 million st) in 1981. The decline in all other industrial and electric utility coal markets was only 5.3 Mt (5.8 million st). Residential and commercial coal use increased 635 kt (700,000 st) to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) from 6.7 Mt (7.4 million st). Power generation decreased 2.3% in 1982, the first year since 1945 that output failed to increase. The decline was due to a drop in industrial demand. Electricity sales to residential, commercial, and other nonindustrial users increased slightly. But coal's competitive position stayed strong. Power generation from oil and natural gas fell 28.9% and 11.7%, respectively. Power generation from coal declined only 0.9%. Among the primary energy sources, coal fueled 53.2% of US electric power generated in 1982, compared with 52.4% in 1981. In 1982, US steel production declined to 66.1 Mt (72.9 million st), the lowest level in 50 years and down from 109.6 Mt (120.8 million st) in 1981. The reduced steel demand forced 13 coke plants to shut down. Coal Exports Coal exports in 1982 totaled 96.4 Mt (106.3 million st), 5.7 Mt (6.3 million st) less than in 1981. Despite the worldwide recession and above normal coal stockpiles in many countries, exports were higher than many expected. This showed the relatively strong US position in international coal trade. The US continued to export near-record coal tonnages despite increasingly competitive influences. These included an improvement in Australia's labor difficulties, the return of Polish coal to Western European markets, and lower oil prices. In 1982, US port facilities were improved and expanded, and more efficient methods for scheduling foreign vessels were implemented. As a result, high volume coal shipments to US ports were routinely loaded and dispatched unhampered by bottlenecks that plagued East Coast ports in 1981. Appalachian coalfield production declined 1.4% from 1981 output and 3.9% from 1980 output. The interior region of the US showed an increase of 7.8% in production. This was primarily because of a

"The north segment of the Zizhi Tunnel that consists of twin tunnels was excavated at a shallow depth in soft ground using the Shallow Tunneling Method. Based on continuous field measurements, the development histories of surface settlement were analyzed first. The observed development process could be roughly divided into three stages and the influence of river was evidenced. Transverse and longitudinal surface settlements above the twin tunnels were then fitted with empirical models. The obtained trough width parameters in transverse and longitudinal direction (it and il) and the volume loss (VLs) were presented and discussed. Additionally, surface settlement was compared with the crown settlement. The relationship between surface and crown settlement behaved in two different ways inside and outside the river-affected region. The findings in this project give references for predicting surface settlements in similar tunneling condition. INTRODUCTION Nowadays tunnel construction has become a major way of utilizing underground space in many large cities. The ground deformation will be inevitably induced in the tunneling process. Engineers should always be careful about excessive deformation that may damage adjacent structures. For shallow tunnels, controlling ground deformation turns to be more risky. Since soil arching is not completely formed in the shallow tunneling, settlements can easily develop from tunnel crown to ground surface.A conventional tunneling method named Shallow Tunneling Method (STM) has been developed and widely applied to constructed shallow tunnels in China. The major difference between this method and the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is whether considering self-supporting capacity of surrounding ground or not. In order to reduce the disturbance of surrounding soils, several guidelines are highlighted in this method, including advanced pipe forepoles, strict grouting, short excavation length, strong support, quick closure and frequent measurements (Fang 2012). Nevertheless, the ground deformation is still hard to control and becomes a concerned problem, mainly because ground settlement has some regional features and largely depends on the detailed excavation methods (bench cut method, multiple heading method, etc.) and ground condition (sand, clay, decomposed rock, etc.)."

"There are many multi-layer coal reserves in China which account for nearly 20 to 25% of the existing proven reserves. When the coals are mined in a descending order using the fully mechanized long wall mining method, they usually have roof collapse with cavity and air leak in roadways and long wall stopes; this is especially relevant when the thickness of the rock between two coals is less than 5.0 m, as the roof stability of lower seam would be greatly reduced. At the Wuhushan Mine, such abnormal strata behavior occurs, including abnormal support stress, irregular period roof pressure, and roof falls in the face. The main reasons for these behaviors include smaller roof thickness, lower rock strength, and mining influence of upper coal; these reasons were determined by analyzing the in situ conditions. A mechanics-based model of the mine geometry was set up to study the sources of stress, the stress evolution of coal, and the discriminant method of roof stability; to obtain the smallest safe thickness of roof between two coal layers, numerical modeling was applied to analyze the relations between the roof thickness and its displacement distribution. Based on the above research, the No.1001 face was divided into easy roof caving zone (ERCZ), roof caving transition zone (RCTZ), and unlikely to roof caving zone (URCZ). In the ERCZ, comprehensive grouting to reinforce the roof was implemented; in the RCTZ, local grouting to reinforce the roof was implemented. Furthermore, a face stability control index and its range were developed in a fully mechanized face combined with mine pressure observation. After implementing this strategy, there have been no unexpected roof caving or other serious strata behaviors.INTRODUCTIONChina is the country with the largest coal production in the world, and the conditions for its coal seams are particularly complicated. For example, in China’s Datong, Wuda, Pingdingshan, and Qinshui mining areas, there are a large number of multi-layer coal seams. The thickness of these coal seams ranges from 1.3 m to more than 10 m, and the spacing between layers is from under 1.0 m to over 30 m. A common problem with these coal seams is that one layer of mining has a large impact on other coal seams, which are customarily referred to as close-distance coal seams. According to statistics, close-distance coal seams account for about 20–25% and 15–18% of China’s coal reserves and production, respectively.From the reference research of Huang (1999, 2002, 2018) and Tu (2010, 2011) we can learn that in the mining process of close-distance coal seams, downward mining is mainly used. When the upper-layer coal is mined, it has a huge mining disturbance effect on the floor (that is, the roof of the lower coal). The mining disturbance increases the mining fissure in the rockmass and weakens the strata strength. The mining problem formed by this issue is that when the lower coal is mined, problems such as difficulty in roadway support, collapse of stope roof, and difficulty in ventilation are often encountered. Especially for the mining of medium-thick coal seam groups with a layer spacing of less than 5.0 m, there has been a large-scale roof collapse accident with a fall height of more than 10.0 m. In response to such problems, domestic and foreign scholars and engineers such as Tan, Zhao, and Xiao (2010), Xie et al. (2017), and others have also carried out targeted theoretical and practical research."

During last year's AIME meeting in New Orleans, Deepak Malhotra and I were discussing some of the topics that would be presented in this Symposium. It seemed appropriate that along with papers on specific reagent and flocculant types, we should address research management aspects of new product development. This development is a long, arduous task that requires a significant technical and fiscal commitment by the chemical company and potential users. A flow chart depicting the research process is shown in Figure 1. The sequence of events are plotted on an undefined time line. Our experience has shown that it takes 3-5 years to complete a typical reagent development project. A new project starts with an idea of how to do something better. The ideas range from relatively simple product modifications to opportunities created by technological change. An example of this is the use of flocculants in tailings operations to close the water recycle loop. The change was brought about by the need to conserve water and comply with environmental statutes. The result was the development and wide-spread use of synthetic polymers to help in solid-liquid separation. More recently the ups and downs of oil prices have led to development of coal water slurries as an alternative to fuel oil. The slurries contain high levels of chemicals (up to 3%) to insure proper stability and burn characteristics. There are technical changes under way right now that may lead to ideas for other new products. One exciting source of new technology is the ability to manipulate genetic material of microbes to select for specific capabilities. This has evolved by leaps and bounds over the past 5 years. Biologically assisted leaching and removal of wastewater impurities are two possible end uses. I'm sure that there are many others. The ideas can originate anywhere and are often half-baked at first, but to lead to new products they must be refined to provide project definition and eventually a research plan. A chemical ,development project cannot be started without approval to commit the company's resources. The internal selling job is often very difficult. The company must see clear financial benefits in order to launch efforts that may not pay off for many years. It is critical to project the total market, profitability, eventual market share, and timing of introduction of the new product. There is much uncertainty in this and the research manager is often skating on thin ice to retain his credibility. Once we obtain support from upper management, the research team is assembled to start the project. The teams generally consist of organic chemists, research metallurgists, and technicians. They have access to analytical scientists and technicians for surface and analytical chemistry. The projects are often augmented by help from university staff and consultants. This is particularly true where there is a need to develop fundamental understanding of the technology in addition to synthesis of chemicals. The project now proceeds along two lines. First, there is an emphasis on understanding the prior art. Extensive literature and patent searches are undertaken to provide research leads and to keep from "reinventing the wheel" and infringing on someone else's patent. The scientists and technologists are qualified to conduct computer-assisted library searches. This process usually uncovers 80-90% of the relevant information. The remainder is very much harder to get and requires the help of professional library search staff with scientific backgrounds. Along with literature searching, the team begins synthesis of new compounds. These are screened by use of techniques such as microflotation or filtration in a Buchner funnel. The scientists are looking for the direction of response as they modify structural features . Inevitably, a large number of candidates reach the next stage, a laboratory bench test. At this point it is possible to set up a research plan and use project management techniques to monitor progress. The bench tests are conducted in larger equipment, usually requiring 100-1000 grams of test substrate. Typical laboratory flotation tests are run in Denver or Wemco cells.

9.1-CLASSIFICATION OF MINERAL DEPOSITS AND ROCK MATERIALS After a mineral deposit has been discovered, delineated and evaluated, the next step is to select a mining method that is physically, economically and environ- mentally adaptable to recovering the mineral from the deposit. The term "mineral deposit" is used to denote a concentration of mineral (including rock and coal). Even where there is considerable past experience available, many of the critical design criteria must be determined utilizing only information obtained from an examination of exploratory drill core specimens. The factors that affect this selection are as follows: (1) the spatial characteristics of the deposit (size, shape, attitude and depth); (2) the physical (or mechanical) properties of the mineral deposit and surrounding rock; (3) ground water and hydraulic conditions; (4) economic factors, including grade of the ore. comparative mining costs and desired production rates; and (5) environmental factors, such as the preservation of the surface overlying the mine, and the prevention of air and water pollutants. Of these factors, the spatial characteristics of the deposit and the physical (or mechanical) properties of the mineral and surrounding rock limit the methods that can be employed to mine it. Six types of mineral deposits are recognized, as follows: 1. Massive-A deposit of considerable lateral and vertical extent in which mineralization (or ore) is relatively uniformly distributed. Disseminated copper ores are typical deposits. Dome salt also is included in this classification. 2. Bedded or Tabular-A mineral deposit that parallels the stratification, most often in sedimentary rock, usually laterally extensive, and of limited thickness. Most coal measures and some evaporite mineral deposits (e.g., potash) fall in this class. 3. Narrow Vein-A zone or belt of mineralization (ore) typically long, narrow (less than 10 ft), often dipping steeply, and usually lying within boundaries separating it from neigh- boring rock. Many gold and other metallic minerals occur in narrow veins. 4. Wide Vein-As defined under narrow vein except that the vein thickness is greater than 10 ft. 5. Lentictclar or Pocket-An isolated ore body, or an enrichment of limited vertical and horizontal extent in a massive, bedded or vein deposit. Lead, zinc and iron ores often occur in this type of deposit. 6. Placer-A surface or near-surface deposit, usually tabular and may be of consider- able areal extent, containing mineral particles (e.g., gold, platinum) in detritus (e.g., sand, gravel). The rock materials associated with mineral deposits are classified as follows: 1. Detritus-Sediments and other accumulations of solid particles produced by the mechanical and/or chemical disintegration of rocks, and usually having a low cohesive strength and very low compressive strength (e.g.. soil, sand, gravel, alluvium, playa). 2. Jointed and Fractured-Unbonded-A rock mass, often occurring on or near the surface or in fault zones, in which the joints or fractures contain alteration or decomposition

Under a contract awarded by the U.S. DOE-PETC, the Pennsylvania Electric Company and New York. State Electric and Gas Corporation are conducting a test program to evaluate and optimize the performance of a two-inch air-sparged. hydrocyclone (ASH) for cleaning fine coal. The test program is being conducted at the Homer City EPRI Coal Quality Development Center, utilizing Upper Freeport coal classified to minus 0.15 mm as the process feed material. A matrix of experiments has been conducted to establish the influence of significant design and operating variables (including overflow and underflow orifices, inlet slurry pressure, airflow rate, and reagent dosage) on the production of deep cleaned coal. Performance of the ASH is being compared to conventional froth flotation, utilizing advanced techniques and selected flotation reagents. This paper focuses on work completed to-date to optimize the performance of the air-sparged hydrocyclone for cleaning fine coal. INTRODUCTION The Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec) and New York State Electric and Gas Corporation (NYSEG) have been evaluating advanced fine coal cleaning processes for the production of compliance grade coal (1.2 pounds S02/million Btu). Laboratory bench-scale froth flotation results were compared with results of advanced flotation processes as performed by various organizations, utilizing the same coal feed. Among the processes evaluated, the air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) - developed by Dr. Jan Miller at the University of Utah - was considered to offer the best potential for retrofitting into an existing coal preparation facility because of the increased capacity per unit volume. The ASH has been shown to process over 100 times the throughput of conventional froth flotation cells. In May of 1988, Penelec/NYSEG was awarded a contract from the Department of Energy's Pittsburgh Energy and Technology Center (DOE-PETC) to optimize the performance of a five cm (two inch) ASH for producing compliance grade coal from raw classified minus 0.150 mm (1.00 mesh) Upper Freeport coal, and to compare its performance with conventional froth flotation utilizing advanced techniques and selected flotation reagents. The test work is being conducted at EPRI's Coal Quality Development Center (CQDC) in Homer City, Pennsylvania, utilizing a circuit processing 0.10 to 0.25 tons of coal per hour. Other members of the Penelec/NYSEG contract team include the University of Utah, Advanced Processing Technologies, Inc., Davy Dravo, Kaiser Engineers, Ebasco Services, and Management and Technical Systems. ASH DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION The ASH-2 System is a five cm ID (actually 4.76 cm) air-sparged hydrocyclone manufactured by Advanced Processing Technologies, Inc., under license from the University of Utah, for the purpose of research, evaluation and development. A schematic drawing of the air-sparged hydrocyclone is presented in Figure 1. Basically the air-sparged hydrocyclone consists of two concentric right-vertical tubes, a conventional cyclone header at the top, and a froth pedestal at the bottom. The inner tube is a porous tube through which air is sparged radially. The outer nonporous tube simply serves as an air jacket to provide for even distribution of air through the porous inner tube. The slurry is fed tangentially through the conventional cyclone header to develop a swirl flow in the radial direction. Air is sparged through the jacketed, inner porous tube wall and is sheared into small bubbles by the swirl flow. Hydrophobic particles in the slurry collide with these bubbles and, after attachment, are transported radially into a froth phase which forms on the cyclone axis. The froth phase is stabilized and constrained by the froth pedestal, thus moving towards the vortex finder of the cyclone header and discharged as an overflow product. Hydrophilic particles generally remain centrifuged in the slurry phase and are discharged as an underflow product through the annulus created by the froth pedestal.

Acknowledgments I am honored to be named as a recipient of the Antoine M. Gaudin Award, and I would like to briefly single out four groups who deserve a special thank-you relative to this award. The first group consists of Professor Kawatra, the many international support references that he gathered and the Gaudin Committee itself. I know such things don't come without considerable effort by many individuals, and I'm grateful for their support. The second group consists of the management of The Dow Chemical Company, the managements of various mining companies and, in recent years, the management of G. S. Technologies, all of whom supported me, financially and otherwise, in my grinding, flotation and other particle-processing work. Operations people are the most overworked and under recognized people in the world, whether they be in the mining or chemical industry. Obviously, without extensive industrial support, especially from operating personnel in the mining industry, almost nothing about the work contained in this lecture would have, or could have, happened. The third group consists of a number of coworkers who have played key roles in specifically implementing the new flotation-product portion of this lecture. Of these, Bob Hansen, Don Leonard, Basil Fee, Simon Isherwood, Fernando Cones and Marty Meulendyke deserve special recognition. They have not only been dedicated, but they have been great to work with. Also in this third group are many members of the international academic community, especially those at Penn State. Professor Leonard Austin must be singled out because he took me as a young mathematically oriented chemist and taught me to be an effective process-oriented engineer. Without this experience, I would not have had the over 30-year career as an engineer, which I have loved. In addition, Len planted the size-reduction-research virus in my blood, which I can't seem to get rid of. I also need to mention Professor Frank Aplan, whose obvious love of mineral processing and froth flotation helped to create my interest in flotation. Thus, for those of you who don't like my approach to flotation, it's all Frank's fault. The fourth, and certainly not the least, group to thank is my wife, Charlene, and our two sons, Richard and Steven. No one could have a more supportive family. In every sense of the word, my wife has been my partner from the beginningwe were married at the end of my freshman year in college. General comments on froth flotation The industrial process of froth flotation: Where is it going? I'm here to tell you loud and clear that froth flotation is alive, well, and growing. The inherent characteristics of high mineral throughput per unit of capital, low operating cost per unit of feed, high mineral specificity and high operating flexibility have guaranteed froth flotation an important past and a growing future. As with any evolving technology, there are always trends at the industrial level that are primarily driven by economics. Introduction In the same way that a blueprint communicates informa¬tion about a structure, a systems architecture should provide information that guides the construction and implementation of a computing system. Taking the blueprint analogy a step further, a plot plan can also show where, in the "bigger picture," a particular design fits (if in fact it does) and what a builder needs to know about the environment in which he or she will operate. In the context of business systems, a meaningful architecture should convey the following: • the primary purpose of computer-based systems rela¬tive to particular tasks or operations, • the relationship of the systems to each other and an indication of their interaction and dependencies, • the relationship of the systems relative to the organiza¬tion and its objectives, • indications of where IS/IT resources can best be allo¬cated to support the organization and • the overall context in which new systems and technolo¬gies can be assessed for both their impacts on current systems and on the organization itself. In theory, a well-designed systems architecture should allow an organization to focus its resources on those aspects of its business that matter most, thus, leveraging investments in information technology to a competitive advantage. In addition, the way that a computing systems architecture is represented should be un¬derstandable to non-IT staff, and it should be eas¬ily recognized by the people it supports. This pa¬per attempts to show that a meaningful systems model exists and that its applica¬tion to mining can achieve the desired results. The following discus¬sion is based on the au¬thors interpretation of a concept referred to as the computer integrated manu¬acturing (CIM) model, as developed by Allen-Bradley. An inherent strength of the CIM approach is that the model combines aspects of business-reporting structures with the manufacturing process itself. What results is a systems frame¬work that is aligned with relevant business processes and is, therefore, easier for non-IS/IT personnel to interpret. The successful application of the CIM model can be seen in a large number of both discrete and process-manufacturing facilities throughout the United States. This paper provides a brief overview of the CIM model and then describes how the model can be applied at a conceptual level to the mining industry. Finally, this paper proposes an extension to the CIM model that the authors believe will make it easier to understand and apply. CIM model As shown on Fig. 1, the CIM model begins with the most detailed levels of process equipment and works its way up to the highest level of consolidated financial reporting. Systems at each level are characterized by common attributes, users, time frames, etc., providing a clear picture of their interac¬tion. Further analysis of the relationships between systems and between levels provides insight into the opportunities for integration. Regardless of the industry or processes involved, the CIM model provides a framework in which the characteristics of systems and the data they manage can be predicted based on the nature of the business function they support. In general, as data moves upward from the lower rungs of the CIM model, it changes from de¬scribing the physical na¬ture of a process to describ¬ing its financial aspects (e.g., from productivity to cost). The time frame to which data applies also transitions from a very short duration, perhaps only milliseconds, to financial or regulatory reporting time frames that may span years. In a simi¬

An integrated steel company is an industrial complex ranging from raw materials mining, through pyrometallurgical smelting and refining, and hot shaping, to product finishing and coating. Within this complex is a great variety of operations which use vast quantities of water, and a variety of water uses which can result in pollution of many different types. The industry has recognized most of its problems for some time, and has spent a great deal of money and effort in reducing and eliminating pollution. A recent survey by AISI showed that the industry has spent, within the last 15 years, two hundred forty millions of dollars on water pollution control, and has authorized spending eighty-seven millions more on this type of non¬productive facilities. While much still remains to be done, I think the record to date is one we can be proud of. In this presentation, we will attempt to outline a number of the water pollution problems encountered in an integrated steel company and to show what types of corrective action have been and are being taken, using Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation as an example.

The present study introduces a new approach to understand the copper dissolution rate and to find an adapted mathematical statement for particle shrinkage rate in a batch bioleaching system. Four size classes of a chalcopyrite concentrate, namely [D1 : (−54 + 44)μm, D2 : (−44 + 38)μm, D3 : (−38 + 25)μm and D4 : (−25)μm], were used in the batch bioleaching tests by applying a mixed culture of moderately thermophilic microorganisms. The pulp density and temperature were 8 (%w/v) and 50 °C, respectively. Findings delineated that the bioleaching time can be divided into two specific time intervals: first, the surface reactions were the prevailing controlling step; second, the prevailing mechanism was diffusion through the product layer, whereas the overall rate of the process may be related to both through a Q factor using a mixed model. A mathematical model was developed based on particle size distribution (PSD) and a kinetic model. Experimental validation of the mixed model was accomplished by the representative sample with d80 = 54 microns. Results showed that the PSD of the specific sample was in good agreement with Rosin–Rammler function. Besides, the simulation result of the conversion fraction had the best conformity with the experimental data (with a maximum error of approximately 7%). This paper should be considered as an initial part of a larger, global model for chalcopyrite concentrate bioleaching.

Introduction The ability to evaluate the improvement resulting from the implementation of an automatic control system is essential to the Justification of its cost. This evaluation may occur after anew control system has been commissioned. In other cases an existing plant which is operated manually may be automated only In part in order to determine In ether the met of it should be. Finally. in some instances dynamic isolation my be used prior to installation of the control system to determine the strategy to be used or to evaluate the improvements In process performance expected from automatic control. This paper describes the development of a methodology for making these evaluations. In order to obtain an accurate assessment of Improvements In a short time, statistical methods can be employed. Mineral processing plant, are subjected to many types of both random and deterministic disturbances of various duration. The statistical method, available for process control at analysis are designed to counter the obscuring effects that random disturbances have on such as evaluation. The basis for evaluation and comparison is some freely chosen measures of process performance termed the performance index or objective function. The experimental data used to calculate the performance index should, if possible, be collected by alternately running a circuit Or plant with the two or more type, or control being tested ("serial testing”) or more preferably, by running two circuits with the two type, of control side by side ("parallel testing") . The performance index is a random variable so that when comparing two types of control, statistical hypothesis testing must be used. By testing s hypothesis statistically one accept, or reject, a (null) hypothesis [ ] concerning the mean or variance of one or more performance indices. For example, a hypothesis Ho might be that the mean of a performance index with stabilizing control is larger than with manual control. Defining a Performance Index The performance index, denoted by [ ] , is a measure by which alternative strategies or situations my be cam peered on either s technical or an economic basis (see Table 1). Technical measures are concerned with the effects of control on process variables or outputs or on the deviations of controlled variable, from their setpoints. For commotion circuit, important technical measures of performance are throughput, product fineness and the consumption of liners, media and electrical energy. For flotation circuits important technical .satires are recovery, grade and reagent consumption. Economic measure such a, cost and profit n usually determined from a combination of technical measures and are usually the final factor upon which a decision may be made, although a control system my achieve higher values of technical measure , the control effort expended my be of such magnitude that the economic measures, such as cost, are poor. Running Comparisons Comparison, between automatic and manual control are normally done with data obtained before and after control system Installation, unless ore characteristics remain the same during the period of data collection the results will be biased. By running the test circuit with the control system alternately turned on and curled off until all possible ore type, have been run through the circuit, unbiased result, can be obtained. This mode of testing is termed “serial testing.” An alternative and potentially more powerful and quicker made of testing is "parallel testing" in which two circuits, one with the type of control being tested and one without, arm run aide by side. In this type of testing both circuits process the same ore so that valid results occur sooner than with aerial testing. The data may be averaged before testing or the differences in the performance indices may first be calculated before averaging. However, the two circuits must be nearly identical in their mechanical characteristics otherwise differences other than the degree of control will bias the results. It mechanical differences exist than it my be necessary to adjust one or the circuits prior to testing. Sometimes it is possible to correct far mechanical differences based on Inherent efficiency calculations made with a model. Hypothesis Testing Once the data is collected, hypothesis fencing can be carried out to determine if the automatic control system has resulted in a statistically significant improvement.
