The rapid decay and disfiguring of stone monuments in urban and desert rural areas has challenged conservators to protect stone surfaces from premature decay. They attempt to halt the natural process of stone decay and possibly to restore the original strength lost mostly by chemical weathering and the loss of binding cement. Ageneral solution is not possible because the physical and chemical characteristics must be considered for different stone types. The failures of stone preservation and restoration are greater in number than the cures. The need for repair of stone decay goes back to evidence of Roman replacement of decaying stone. The presence of excess water in buildings has long been recognized. Moisture tends to enter masonry from air in humid climates, a most important but often underrated factor (Fig. 1) suggesting that sealing should be the answer. Undesirable staining and efflorescence result in accelerated scaling. Today, the great variety of chemicals available to the modem conservator for sealing. consolidating, or hardening stone fall into two very different categories: surface sealers and penetrating stone consolidants, or a combination of both. SEALERS Sealers develop a tight, impervious skin which prevents access of moisture. Surface sealing has saved monuments from decay by eliminating the access of atmospheric humidity. Pressure tends to develop behind the stone surface by moisture escape. Efflorescence, crystal growth action, and freezing can cause considerable spalling (Anderegg, 1949). Flaking results when moisture is trapped behind the sealed surface. Yellowing and blotchiness are also frequently observed. The following sealants are in common use today: linseed oil, paraffin, silicone, urethane, acrylate, and animal blood on stone and adobe. Extensive cracking and yellowing has resulted soon after application. In the past many such treatments have created more problems than cures: 1. Linseed oil and paraffin have been in use for centuries. Embrittlement and yellowing occur rapidly because these are readily attacked by solar ultraviolet radiation. 2. Animal blood as paint has temporarily waterproofed adobe mud and stone masonry. The origin of blood paint has a religious background rooted in the Phoenician and Hebrew cultures. Instant water soluble dried blood can substitute for fresh blood. Winkler (1956) described the history and technique of the use of blood. 3. Silicones have proven very effective and are long lasting. In contrast, acrylates, urethane, and styrene are generally rapidly attacked by UV radiation (Clark et al., 1975). Sealing of Different Rock Types Granitic rocks have a natural porosity traced to 4.5% contraction of quartz, during cooling of the parent magma, compared with only 2% contraction of all other minerals; protection against the hygric forces may require waterproofing of granite in some in- stances. The Egyptian granite obelisk in London is an example. Soon after its relocation from Egypt to London, Cleopatra's Needle was treated, in 1879, with a mixture of Damar resin and wax dissolved in clear petroleum spirit; surface scaling became evident after half a year of exposure to the humid London atmosphere. The treatment of the ancient granite monument from Egypt has denied access of high relative humidity (RH) in London to the trapped salts inherited from the Egyptian desert and has protected the monument from decay (Burgess and Schaffer, 1952). The sister obelisk set up in Central Park, New York City, has fared less favorably because similar treatment was done too late, only after the salts hydrated and hundreds of kilograms of scalings disfigured the obelisk surface (Winkler, 1980). Surface coating of other common stones may be needed. Crystalline marble absorbs moisture from high RH atmospheres: dilation may ensue when curtain panels bow as the moisture starts to expand during daily heating-cooling cycles. A good sealer may prevent the moisture influx provided that no moisture can enter from the inside of the building. Limestones, dolomites and all carbonate rocks are subject to dissolution attack by rainwater, especially in areas where acid rain prevails (Fig. 2). The interaction of sulfates in the atmosphere with the stone can be halted by waterproofing to avoid the formation of soft and more soluble gypsum. The stone surface attack can be diminished if nearly insoluble Ca-sulfite crusts can form, instead of Ca-sulfate. Replacement of fluorite or barium compounds at the stone surface acts as a hardener, rather than a sealant. Sandstones have generally high porosity and rapid water travel can occur along unexpected routes and from any direction. Any surface sealing may do more damage by scaling and bursting than if the stone is left without treatment. Sealing of sandstones is therefore not advised at any time. Testing the efficiency of sealants: Several authors discuss waterproofing materials, silicones, urethanes, acrylates and stearates, as to their water absorption, spreading rates of water on the treated surface, water vapor transmission, resistance to efflorescence, and general appearance (Clark et al., 1975). De Castro (1983) measured the angle of contact of a microdrop (0.004 cm3) on a stone surface as characteristic of the wettability. INTRODUCTION Grinding mills have been used in the minerals processing industry for over 100 years. Their dimensions have grown continuously during this time. Besides increasing throughput rates of grinding plants due to the depletion of high grade ores, the lower specific in- vestment costs, as well as reduced operating and maintenance requirements are major reasons for this trend. When selecting new plant equipment one must consider that design principles which have proven their reliability on sizes of today's equipment do not automatically warrant a successful operation on the ever larger size of equipment. Modern calculation methods as for instance the Finite Element method already contribute considerably to the safe design of the huge equipment being built today and are a standard tool of the design engineers. More recently, modern computer programs are also being used in order to size the equipment to meet the process requirements. Today, two design principles are on the market - one which supports the weight of such a unit on trunnion bearings through cast conical endwalls and one which is supported through slipper pad bearings arranged at the circumference of the mill shell (Fig.1). The reason for the development of this alternative grinding mill design can be found in the past. During the sixties and seventies the growing sizes of ball mills with high LID ratios caused many mill failures due to cracked endwalls. The accuracy of the calculation methods as well as the quality standards for castings were not developed to a degree required for such kind of heavy equipment. One way to overcome these problems was the increase of the manufacturing quality standards as well as the introduction of the finite element method based on the analysis of the experience available. The biggest grinding mills being built today are large size SAG mills with cast conical endwalls and trunnion bearings (Fig.2). This is due to the fact that mill manufacturers who had come from the conventional ball mill design adopted these principles as well to their SAG mills. These grinding mills perform well without special concern to the operators. Other manufacturers overcame the problems as mentioned above by eliminating completely the heavy castings and trunnion bearings and the problems associated to it (Fig.1). This design was originally applied to ball mills for the mining and other industries. Due to the success of these shell supported ball mills, this design principle was also applied to SAG mills(Fig.3). Despite of the fact that the majority of today's grinding mills are built to the conventional design it is also interesting to have a look at this alternative. Principles which have proven their reliability on sizes of today's equipment do not automatically warrant a successful operation on the ever larger equipment if bigger mill sizes are realized only based on the pantograph principle. With growing grinding mill sizes, the mass and volume flows through the equipment increases rapidly. Thus it is very important not only to concentrate on the safe design of the structural components of the equipment but as well on the process requirements. The influence of the design on important process parameters of dry and wet grinding plants are discussed thereafter. It shall be shown how modern computer programs can assist in the optimization of the design of components in order to fulfil the operational requirements of such large size equipment. PROCESS REQUIREMENTS OF LARGE SIZE GRINDING MILLS Dry Grinding Mills The world's biggest ball mill is a dry grinding ball mill having a diameter of 6.2m and an overall length of 25,5m with a drive power of 11,200 KW or 15,000HP. This grinding mill dries and grinds gold ore at a rate of 500 tons per hour at a moisture content of up to 9,5%. As shown in Fig.4 this mill was built as a shell supported unit. In fact only this design principle allowed to meet the process requirement. This mill could hardly be built with cast conical endwalls due to the constraints of the trunnion bearings limiting the mill inlet. The following case shows how modern computer programs can help to meet the design criteria of the air system of large size dry grinding plants. INTRODUCTION The determination and use of mechanical properties of rock in engineering and rock mechanics are rapidly developing. Many of these properties are determined on intact rock specimens; thus, their application and repre¬sentation of rock mass properties may be limited. How¬ever, relative information often provides useful guidance in the solution to mine design and stability problems. Summarized in this chapter are some of the stan¬dardized techniques and procedures currently used to obtain these mechanical properties. Typical applications of the use of these properties are also presented. Stan¬dardized techniques include those advanced by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM), US Bureau of Mines (USBM), Canadian Dept. of Mines and Technical Surveys, South African Institute of Min¬ing and Metallurgy, and other individual investigators. Information on the mechanical properties of rock and the behavior of the rock under a given system of stresses represents a necessary part of the information for rational engineering design for any given mining op¬eration. The mining method, the type and extent of sup¬port, the extraction ratio, the overall dimensions of the mine, and the orientation of the rooms and pillars are all decisions that are influenced by the mechanical prop¬erties of the ore, roof, and floor material under various stress systems and the magnitude and direction of the in situ stresses (Hooker, Bickel, and Aggson, 1972). Initial mechanical property information regarding a structure or mine property is generally obtained by two basic techniques: (1) static and dynamic property tests are conducted on intact and fractured rock specimens of exploratory drill core, and (2) dynamic properties are obtained by borehole logging techniques. When mining access becomes available, and as the mining horizon is expanded, additional information can be ob¬tained to verify preliminary mine design values. This chapter presents some of the standardized tech¬niques and equipment currently used in obtaining me¬chanical property data in the laboratory. The properties considered are: (1) uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock core specimens, (2) uniaxial compressive strength of rock cores containing planes of weakness, (3) triaxial compressive strength of intact rock core specimens, (4) triaxial compressive strength of cores with a plane of weakness, (5) Young's modulus, (6) Poisson's ratio, (7) density or apparent specific gravity, (8) modulus of rupture, (9) indirect tensile strength, and (10) creep characteristics. Where possible, an at¬tempt will be made to evaluate each property measure¬ment in relation to the problems of rock mechanics and application of results. TEST SPECIMENS The selection and care of drill core for laboratory testing require some consideration. It is recognized that laboratory-determined properties are not necessarily rep¬resentative of an in situ rock mass property. However, relative information between beds or zones of interest is still valuable information in selecting mining horizons and preliminary design criteria. To provide statistical data the number of drill core samples selected to repre¬sent each of the areas of interest should be from a mini¬mum of three to a maximum of ten test specimens. A judgment must also be made on site as to whether the recovered drill core should be wrapped and sealed in plastic to preserve moisture. On the one hand investiga¬tions of air-dried and saturated specimens have shown that moisture significantly affects the elastic properties and strengths of many rock materials (Obert, Windes, and Duvall, 1946; Colback and Wiid, 1965); on the other hand it is apparent that most core drilling is done with water which may saturate the specimen to a greater extent than in the in-situ condition. Whether or not the decision is made to retain the moisture, the core should be delivered to the laboratory as soon as possible after recovery for subsequent specimen preparation and testing. Specifications Shape: The shape of the specimens influences lab¬oratory testing in two ways: (1) time and cost of sam¬ple preparation and (2) strength of the material. Cy¬lindrical specimens of drill core are by far the least time-consuming to prepare for static or dynamic labora¬tory testing. In addition, the cylindrical shape lends it¬self to a more uniform stress distribution throughout the sample than other shapes, such as rectangles and hexa¬gons. The compressive strengths of various shapes have been studied (Grosvenor, 1963, and Price, 1960), and results indicate that the cylindrical specimens usually provide the highest strength for a given height-diameter ratio. However, reduction in strength from a cylindrical shape to a rectangular in situ pillar is not regarded as significant in relation to other considerations such as planes of weakness in a pillar or safety factors in the design process. Length-Diameter Ratio: The length-to-diameter ra¬tio, LID, has a significant effect on the compressive strength. Various recommendations have been made to use standard LID ratios ranging from 2 to 2.5 to 3 (ASTM, 1975c; ISRM, 1972). However, past work by others such as Obert, Windes, and Duvall (1946) has shown that excellent results can be obtained using LID ratios from 2 > (LID) > >/s. In selecting an LID ratio for testing, one should keep in mind the amount of material available for testing. In many instances, this may be limited. Thus, a shorter specimen such as 1: 1 LID may be necessary to provide enough test data for statistical analysis of results. Sec¬ond, it may be desirable to obtain elastic constants dur¬ing the test. This generally requires instrumentation such as linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs) or strain gages near the center of the specimen. Conventional methods of controlling abandoned mine fires include: loading out, inundation, fire barriers, flushing, and surface sealing. This paper describes a proposed fire-control technique utilizing a new explosive fragmentation method. An impervious barrier is created by using explosive energy and strategic emplacement in boreholes drilled from the surface. Blast round design, average fragment size, and impermeability of the fragmentation barrier are discussed. This barrier, created by the blasted floor rock, could also be used to fill in the open space in abandoned mines for subsidence prevention or control.

Pumice and volcanic cinder are volcanic rocks characterized by a cellular structure. They are formed as gases (primarily water) dissolved in molten rock, or magma, exsolve to generate a froth that cools and solidifies into rigid foam. The cells or bubbles are referred to as vesicles and they range in size from a few thousandth of a millimeter to several centimeters. Due to their vesicular character, both pumice and cinder have lower density and higher porosity than most other rock types, and, as the vesicle walls are broken, sharp cutting edges are continually generated. These properties are the basis for their commercial value as lightweight aggregates, insulators, absorbents, and abrasives. There is a certain imprecision in the terminology applied to volcanic products, reflecting to varying degrees the diversity of volcanic rocks, the relative youth of volcanology as a distinct field of study, and customs and practices of commercial trade. In general terms, pumice is light colored (white, gray, pink, pale yellow, or brown) and highly vesicular, usually with vesicle walls that are visibly glassy. Many pumice fragments are light enough to float on water. Pumice is readily cut by steel tools and some can be crushed by hand. Individual pumice fragments may range from 1 or 2 m in one dimension to c1 mm. Commercially, finer fragments are called pumicite or volcanic ash. In volcanology the term ash refers to any fragment c2 mm in size regardless of its composition. Cinder, or scoria, is dark colored (black, red, brown) with thick vesicle walls that appear dull or stony and that may exhibit iridescence. Cinder typically is heavier than pumice and has a higher crushing strength. In volcanology the term scoria refers to dark vesicular material throughout a wide size range while it is common commercial practice to use scoria for larger fragments (usually greater than 2.5 cm) and cinder for smaller fragments. GEOLOGY Composition and Physical Characteristics Most pumice is silicic ranging from 60 to 70% SiO2, that is, dacitic to rhyolitic in composition. Pumice of less silicic composition, including basaltic, occurs but it is less common and does not have extensive commercial use. Scoria and cinder are typically basaltic to andesitic with approximately 50 to 60% SiO2. Pumice and cinder may contain phenocrysts of feldspars and various ferromagnesian minerals that crystallized in the magma prior to eruption. Fragments of rock through which the magma has passed may be entrained in the melt and wall rock may be fragmented and admixed during an explosive eruption. Some scoria particles have lithic fragment cores. Phenocrysts and lithic fragments are relatively unimportant in cinder end uses but their presence may be detrimental in certain pumice products. Pumice typically has vesicles <1 mm in size separated by thin walls. Vesicle shapes include irregular, spherical, elliptical, and elongate to the point of being tubular with a silky appearance (Fig. 1). In some pumices, the vesicles are interconnected making the fragments permeable and highly absorbent; in others the vesicles are isolated forming a highly porous but very impermeable pumice. Floating masses of pumice fragments from the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883 were reported in the Indian Ocean for up to two years after the eruption. Vesicles in cinder are larger and range from spherical to highly irregular in shape with much thicker walls and abundant interconnections. Scoria and cinder are typically heavier, porous, and do not float. Density and hardness of pumice must be expressed precisely to avoid confusion. Density may refer to the glass itself, the apparent density of the vesicular pumice particle, or the bulk density of pumice in a deposit or in a product. Pumice glass has a specific gravity of 2.5 or more depending on its composition. Pumice fragments typically have a specific gravity of 4.0 and so will float on water, at least until enough vesicles are saturated to cause them to sink. Expressed as density, pumice fragments typically weigh less than 1 g/cm3. Depending on moisture content, particle density, and particle size distribution, the bulk density of pumice typically ranges from 500 to 700 kg/m3. Typical bulk densities of cinder range from 700 to 900 kg/m3 for material used as lightweight aggregate while the bulk density of cinder used for highways and railroad ballast may be considerably higher. Hardness in pumice may refer to the glass vesicle walls, possibly including crystals or lithic fragments, or to the apparent hardness of the particle as a whole, which is more a measure of the strength of the vesicle structure. Pumice glass typically has a Mohs hardness of 5 to 5.5. A pumice particle may have a much lower apparent hardness and be easily cut with a knife or steel saw because the vesicle walls break readily. Pumice and cinder are primarily pyroclastic deposits formed as fragmental products of volcanic eruptions. Several classification - systems differing in various details have been proposed for pyroclasts and pyroclastic deposits based on particle size (Fisher, 1961, Schmid, 1981, Cas and Wright, 1988). Generally, particles >64 mm are referred to as blocks or bombs depending on their shape. Particles between 64 mm and 2 mm (4 mm in some schemes) are called lapilli and smaller particles are called ash. These names may be modified by compositional terms, for example pumice lapilli or scoria lapilli. Most commercial deposits are composed of fragments in the lapilli size range. In the United States, pumice fragments having one dimension of 5 cm or more are legally defined as block pumice. The procedures for acquiring pumice from federal land are determined in part by this definition and are described in a later section.

Microseismic passive velocity tomography is becoming an effective technology for large-scale mining-induced stress monitoring in underground mines, especially in the field of early warning of mining-induced hazards. Aiming at the problems of missing low-magnitude events in traditional microseismic monitoring, as well as the potential to increase the resolution of the tomograms in both time and space, a microseismic passive velocity tomography analysis method based on the template matching method was proposed. First, the template matching method was used to pick microseismic events. Then, the probabilistic, non-linear, global-search earthquake location method was used to locate the events and calculate travel time and travel distance. Finally, the fast-marching method was used to carry out passive velocity tomography analysis to image the movement of the abutment stress associated with the longwall. The results show that the selected templates can identify more microseismic events than the traditional microseismic analysis, and the variation trend of events in each day is consistent with the data from the traditional analysis. Using microseismic event locations, travel times and travel distance can effectively complete microseismic passive velocity tomography analysis in each day during the study period and can effectively identify the forward and side abutment stress zones of that longwall panel. This study provides a reference for the identification of mine-induced high stress zones, which has implications for hazard identification and mitigation, with increased resolution of the tomograms in time and space.

Accident prevention can be portrayed as a science that deals with facts and natural phenomena and must be dealt with in the same manner as any other operating problem. Safety at the Copper Queen Branch dates back to 1913 when a Safety Organization was started and rules formulated for underground mining. Since then the mining industry has made substantial progress in the elimination of accidents and when the Lavender Pit was started in 1951, it adopted the general plan in use at all Phelps Dodge properties. Following is a brief description of the Pit Operations:

Consolidation Coal Company&apos;s Loveridge Mine operates the only coarse coal hoisting and overland slurry transport system in North America. The system has been in operation since April 1980 and according to current haulage levels will have handled over two million tons by this conference date. Original performance goals have been exceeded. The systems will be described and their application to rapid excavation and tunneling haulage needs will be discussed. That grinding may change a crystalline material both in a physical and in a chemical sense has been shown by a number of authors in recent years. Thus Mackenzie (1) and Bartha (2) reported the effects of careful grinding on muscovite, quartz, gypsum, dolomite, etc. Increase in specific surface produced by grinding implies increase in total energy of a system. Newly produced surfaces are chemically more reactive; dislocations may be introduced during grinding, and existing strain may be released by the same process, as shown by Holt et el. (3) All these changes are easily detected by thermal analysis, but it is not easy to separate the multiplicity of effects registered and to arrive at quantitative interpretations. This paper is an attempt to analyze by the use of thermal analysis some effects produced in grinding. In differential thermal analysis (DTA) one measures all thermal changes occurring in a substance during heating or cooling. Chemical changes, such as decompositions, synthesis, oxidation, reduction, etc., and physical changes such as phase transformations, changes in specific surface and in thermal conductivity, strain release, etc. By thermo gradmetric analysis (TGA) on the other hand only chemical changes involving weight loss or gain are recorded. Similarly gas evolution analysis (GEA) will register only reactions involving gas evolution, including water vapor, and oxidation-reduction. By performing two or all three of these thermal methods of thermal analysis simultaneously and on the same specimen one can separate the different effects registered and by difference evaluate their magnitude.

A number of mineral processing techniques have been adopted for the separation of the plastics making up a typical beverage bottle, and a complete flowsheet developed. Thus, size reduction, heavy media separation and flotation were used to separate PE, PVC and PET from their mixtures with cellulose fibers and aluminum, which makes up the cap of such bottles. It is shown that while heavy media separation allows the separation of a PVC/PET mixture from the solid waste, froth flotation can be readily used to separate PVC and PET from a mixture of the two. For this purpose, the differential action of an alkaline aqueous solution (PH=II) which contains methanol and MIBC as surface tension control agents has been found to be a suitable flotation medium. This paper reports some aspects of the flotation flowsheet developed for the separation of plastics from municipal solid waste mixtures and PVC from PET.

High-resolution seismic reflection profiling can be used to evaluate detailed struc¬tural and stratigraphic features of coal pros¬pects. Since most coal prospects are relatively shallow (less than six hundred meters deep), the vertical and lateral resolution of seismic data can be significantly improved by high sampling rates in space and time. The case study present¬ed shows the effective use of seismic data in evaluation of the Wyodak coal at a prospective coal gasification site. The data were used to map the detailed structure and thickness of the coal and to search for lateral discontinuities, such as pinchouts and. faults. An important find was a paleochannel cutting across the base of the coal seam, which was later confirmed by drilling.

Autocad has become the standard graphics package for the mining industry as well as the general engineering profession. This paper discusses the evolution that mine planning has undergone and the trend toward compatibility with Autocad. It discusses the common use of Autocad in mine planning and systems modeling using a program called ICAMPS developed by Ohio Automation. As an example of its usefulness the use of the interactive ventilation network modeling capabilities are discussed specifically and are applied to mine planning at an operating trona mine. The ventilation analysis feature of the ICAMPS software works from Autocad drawing of the as-mined map and the projected mine layout. Using on-screen displays of these maps and the snap-on feature of Autocad, the planner designates nodes in the ventilation network, connects them into branches and selects branch characteristics from a side bar menu. The color coded ventilation network appears with the branch parameters alongside each branch. The software calculates the length of airways, computes the branch resistances where needed, converts the input into the required format and passes this information as input data along to the PENNVEN simulation program written by the Pennsylvania state University. Output is available in graphical as well as report format. The color coded graphs include pressures at the nodes and flow quantities on the branches. Since the networks come from the mine maps, the ventilation schematic displays are to scale and can be plotted separately or superimposed on the mine maps.

The Tambomachay ore deposit (13°28'36.78"S, 71°57'35.98"W, about 6 km north of the town of Cuzco, Peru) consists of Cu hosted in arkosic red beds of the Kayra Formation (Lower Eocene). Bornite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, covelite, digenite, malachite, and chrysocolla occur disseminated in thin layers and in veinlets. The occurrence of the copper ores in a part of the red bed sequence containing green reducing layers, the presence of organic matter in interstices between the hypogene sulfides, and the sulfur composition of the copper sulfides (δ34S values between -16.9 and -12.4‰ vs VCDT) pointing to bacterial sulfate reduction, are strong arguments to propose that mineralization was caused by copper-bearing oxidizing saline basinal fluids that precipitate copper sulfides when they meet reduced sulfur in an organic matter-rich horizon. Faults parallel to the regional Tambomachay Fault could have acted as feeders for oxidizing basinal copper-bearing fluids. Fluid migration was probably driven by tectonically-induced topography gradient. INTRODUCTION A number of red bed Cu occurrences are known in the Cuzco region in the early Eocene – early Oligocene San Jerónimo Group (Gregory, 1916; Carlotto et al., 1996, 2011; Loza et al., 2004). In the past, copper ores were extracted in several small-scale mines in the surroundings of Cuzco, including Tambomachay, Tipón, and Zurite in the Cusco province and Ushpa, Guilda, Giovanna, and Langui in the Sicuani Province. The abandoned Tambomachay Mine (13°28'36.78"S, 71°57'35.98"W), about 6 km to the north of the town of Cuzco (Romero et al., 2015; Salcedo et al., 2017, Fig. 1) was chosen as the main site for the present research aimed to better study the genesis of these copper occurrences. Results deriving from fieldwork, microscopic characterization of ore and host rock, and sulfur isotope determination suggest that the key factor for the genesis of the copper ores is that copper transported by oxidizing basinal fluids is trapped by reduced sulfur of bacteriogenic origin located in a part of the red bed sequence that shows intercalatins of green reduced horizons.

Thionocarbamate flotation reagents have enjoyed a niche position in the recovery of copper sulfides and activated sphalerites since their introduction in the mid 1950&apos;s (Harris, 1954). Thionocarbamates containing an allyl group (-CH2- CH=CH2), introduced recently Lewellyn, 1985; Nagaraj, 1988; Avotins, 1991), are used commercially as collectors for copper sulfides and activated sphalerite. Laboratory flotation tests and plant usage have demonstrated that allyl-containing thionocarbamate collectors exhibit certain unique properties that distinguish them from the corresponding dialkyl thionocarbamates. Spectroscopic (FTIR, XPS) and wettability studies of N-allyl iso-butyl thionocarbamate (AIBTC) and its saturated analog N-propyl iso-butyl thionocarbamate (NPIBTC) adsorbed on copper at pH 9 were performed in order to investigate whether there were any fundamental reasons for these differences. Flotation tests were carried out on chalcocite, copper ore and an activated sphalerite.

When the subject of plant computers is brought up most people visualize the computer&apos;s controlling the entire plant with very little operator intervention. Actually, this picture is true today in only a limited number of cases and will certainly not be true in the minerals industries for many years to come. There are several ways in which a plant computer can significantly contribute to improving plant operation and closed loop control is only one of these. First of all, what are the basic ingredients for good plant control? For good plant control, two requirements must be met. First, the operator must get good information feedback from the process and then he must know what action to take in response to this information. Control information can be obtained through instruments, laboratory analyses, or through simple visual observation. If it is timely and accurate and the operator knows how to use it, then we have the makings of a good plant control system. The computer can be of help in both these areas by getting good data back to the operator and in helping to develop a good control scheme for the plant.

The report shows the sensitivity that nine different cash-flow factors have on the discounted rate of return calculated from feasibiliity- studies on potenital open-pit orebodies of silver, copper, and uranium. Cash-flow factors of "grade", "market value", and "recovery" are. the most sensitive. This verifies the need of reliable estimates for these factors. The cost of evaluation of "preproduction cost" is the least sensitive. This gives credence to the fact that more consideration should be given to compiling sufficient data, as the largest financial losses are not in the cost of evaluation but rather in the abandonment of an unprofitable mining operation after a commitment of capital is made on the basis of an incomplete evaluation. Sensitivity analysis of cash-flow factors enhances evaluation programs by disciplining the collection of data and allowing more realistic distribution of evaluation monies.

"The mining environment presents challenging and complex situations for the application of medical care. The combination of remote locations, difficult access and longer response times may create an increase in morbidity and mortality in the event of serious accidents. The U.S Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has only minimal requirements of first aid training for mine workers. For mine rescue team members, MSHA requires medical training at the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) level, as only prescribed by mine rescue contest rules. This paper examines, based on mine accident statistical information, whether a higher level of medical training, for example at the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or at the Advanced Life Support (ALS) level can better address injuries most commonly disabling or leading to the death of miners in the United States. BACKGROUND Prehospital emergency medical care for the sick and injured has evolved considerably from first inception. Ambulances used to be staffed by persons with little training and equipment and prehospital care was focused largely on the rapid transport of the injured person to a hospital and. The modern prehospital care model was initially developed in military applications, where medics were responsible for some treatment on the battlefield and rapid transport to the care of a physician. In 1965, the National Academy of Sciences and National Research Council Committees on Trauma and Shock published Accidental Death and Disability: The Neglected Disease of Modern Society (National Research Council Committees on Trauma and Shock, 1966). This white paper laid out the consequences of the insufficiency of the Emergency Medical System (EMS) in the United States at that time. According to this paper, in 1965, 107,000 people were killed from accidental injury, with another 400,000 injured with permanent disability. The authors estimated that approximately 50% of ambulance services were provided by local morticians that were not capable of rendering advanced life support. The paper states that, based on experiences in the Vietnam war, seriously wounded soldiers had a better chance of survival in the battle field compared to traffic accident victims with similar traumatic injuries because the military was capable of providing first aid and efficient transportation to emergency care facilities. The white paper states that death rates from battle injuries declined significantly from 8% in World War I to 2% in Vietnam. The publication of this white paper is credited for the broad evolution and rapid advance of the civilian EMS system after 1965. It eventually lead to the creation of the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) National Standard Curricula (NSC) for emergency medical care in 1985. Training, and therefore required skill and knowledge for prehospital emergency care has continued to grow to reach the current standard."

"Rare earth elements (REEs) found in coal are in the form of minerals, ion-substitution with clays and organically bound. Rare earth minerals (REMs) such as monazite exist in coal and have a grain size less than 5 microns. Froth flotation was successful in concentrating REMs existing in a thickener underflow material derived from Fire Clay seam coal which contained around 300 ppm of rare earth elements (REEs). Conditioning with fatty acid followed by processing using multiple stages of conventional flotation produced a final concentrate containing 2300 ppm REEs. Using a laboratory flotation column, a concentrate containing around 4700 ppm of total REEs was produced equating to an enrichment ratio of 10:1. INTRODUCTION Rare earth elements (REEs) are becoming increasingly important and have been widely used as raw materials for the production of phosphor, metal catalysts, magnets, and batteries [1, 2]. REE recovery from alternative sources such as coal and coal by-products has the potential to stabilize the economic viability of coal mining operations while providing a dependable supply of critical materials. The average REE content of the world coal is around 60-70 ppm [2]. There are many well-known coal beds with high contents of REEs such as those in the Far East coalfields in Russia (300-1000 ppm), the Fire Clay coal seam in eastern Kentucky (500 ppm), and the Sydney Basin in Nova Scotia, Canada (72-483 ppm) [3-6]. The occurrence of REEs in coal and coal by-products can be classified into three types, i.e., rare earth minerals such as monazite and xenotime, ion exchangeable REEs in clays, and REEs associated with organic matrix. The particle size of the rare earth (RE) minerals in coal and coal by-products is very small and normally in the micron and/or nanometer scales. The flotation technique, which is based on the surface chemistry difference, has been widely used to treat fine rare earth industrial minerals such as monazite, xenotime, and bastnaesite [7-11]. As such, flotation is a promising method for the concentration of REEs from coal and coal by-products. In the current study, rare earth flotation was conducted using the fine coal refuse generated at an operating coal preparation plant treating coal from the Fire Clay seam. REE concentration by flotation required an appropriate amount of grinding and control of the pH value while using typical collectors. Prior to RE concentration, release tests were conducted to evaluate the floatability of the recoverable coal and the REE distribution in the flotation fractions in the fine refuse. Mineralogy of the REE was studied using SEM-EDX."

Introduction and Historical Background State Geological Surveys have been deeply involved in industrial minerals from their inception beginning in the first half of the 19th Century. To Massachusetts belongs the credit of having carried out the first Geological survey under state auspices on the Western Hemisphere. One of the causes leading up to this survey was. Governor Lincoln&apos;s message to the legislature of May 29, 1830, from which I quote in part: "Much knowledge of the natural history of the country would thus be gained (from a geological survey), and especially the presence of valuable ores, with the localities and extent of quarries and of coal and lime formations, objects of inquiry so essential to internal improvements and the advancement of domestic prosperity, would be discovered.". Similar phraseology is present in practically all of the initial organic acts creating the first State Surveys. High on the list of priorities for these embryo surveys was an inventory of the mineral resources of the State with particular emphasis on the industrial minerals. Prom these early beginnings, the state surveys have developed a great wealth of geological data either directly or indirectly relating to the development of mineral resources. One can gain some conception of the effort that state surveys today place on industrial minerals studies by noting the projects in which they are engaged as reported in the State Geologists Journal.
