Viewed abstractly, a mill may be defined as a mineral processing facility located somewhere between the mine and the tailings storage area, Just how mining operations and the demands of tailings storage affect mill design is, the subject of this paper. At the outset, it will be readily acknowledged that no two installations can, or ever will be the same. At one extreme is the bucket line dredge where the distance between the ?mine? and the tailings area is measured in terms of tens of feet. At the other extreme, the large open pit copper mines are frequently spread across twenty, miles or so of countryside with the ore moving to the mill, as exemplified by the operations at Bingham Canyon, Ray, or Ruth - the "upstream" counterparts of Garfield, Hayden and McGill. In each of these cases, mill location was largely determined by requirements for tailings storage and/or water supply.

Introduction The ore deposits of the Viburnum Trend in the Southeast Missouri Lead District constitute the world's largest lead producing district. Six or seven mines currently are in production in the Viburnum Trend. The principal minerals are few in number, simple in composition, and form simple superposition and replacement textures. The economically valuable minerals in the typical lead-zinc ores of the Viburnum Trend are the sulfides, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and siegenite. The most abundant gangue minerals are dolomite, marcasite, pyrite, calcite, quartz, and dickite. Four concentrates, lead, zinc, copper, and cobalt are produced from the ores, and they contain an interesting suite of trace elements, of which silver and cadmium are recovered at the smelter and refinery.1 Emphasis is given here to the variations in directions of ore fluid flow based upon interpretations of the positions of orebodies due to the ore fluids being impeded by Precambrian basement relief and upon patterns of ore mineral/metal zoning. The Precambrian basement relief and Lamotte Formation pinchout has exerted an important control upon the specific locations of orebodies in the Southeast Missouri Lead District. The locations of some orebodies along one side of Precambrian knobs or ridges strongly suggests that they are positioned on the side from which the ore fluids flowed. Other orebodies are located in positions that suggest that they formed where the ore fluids passed around or between Precambrian knobs. Patterns of mineral and/or metal zoning have been used in many mineral districts to interpret the directions of ore fluid flow. The mineral/metal zoning pattern correlates closely with that of the mineral paragenesis. The earliest deposited minerals tend to be deposited nearest to the source, the later deposited minerals next closest to the source, and the latest deposited minerals furthest from the source. In the Southeast Missouri Lead District, it is interpreted here that the early-deposited copper-rich ores are closest to the source of the ore fluids, the subsequently-deposited zinc-rich ores are next closest to the source, and iron-rich ores are furthest from the source.

The colloidal stability of synthetic silica spheres with clean, methylated and dehydroxylated sur¬faces was studied at different concentrations of dissolved gas and KCl electrolyte at a fixed pH of 4.2. A classic stability ratio/electrolyte concentration analysis shows that hydrophobic, methy¬lated particles undergo faster rates of aggregation with increasing concentrations of dissolved carbon dioxide. Similar data for hydrophilic particles and dehydroxylated particles show no change as a function of dissolved carbon dioxide concentration. Zeta potential data behave simi¬larly, showing a strong influence of dissolved gas only for methylated particles. The results are interpreted in terms of DLVO theory, with the surface-to-surface interaction dominated by the presence of very small protruding bubbles. Direct evidence for the existence of these very small gas bubbles (or "nanobubbles") was obtained using tapping mode atomic force microscopy. Small bubbles do not form on smooth, hydrophilic, or dehydroxylated silicon oxide water sur¬faces immersed in aqueous solutions under known levels of gas supersaturation. Randomly dis¬tributed small bubbles were observed over the whole surface of observation on methylated surfaces of controlled roughness. Bubbles formed on rough, methylated surfaces were larger and less-densely distributed than those on a smooth surface of similar hydrophobicity. The process of bubble coalescence was observed as a function of time. The macroscopic contact angle, measured with respect to the aqueous or gas phase, is very different from the microscopic contact angle detected by TMAFM and appears to be due to the influence of line tension at the pinned three¬phase contact line. The latter has a value of -3 x 10-10 N and acts to stabilize the small bubbles, flattening them and thereby reducing the Laplace pressure.

The need to modernise and increase the safety provision of older road tunnels raises challenges in maintaining the operation of the tunnel during such improvement works. The Mersey Kingsway twin road tunnels located in Liverpool UK, constructed in the late 1960s, have had three new cross passages constructed to allow emergency evacuation from one tunnel to the other tunnel and provide safer access for emergency services. The 3200m long road tunnels are lined with an unusual reinforced concrete steel-faced segmental lining with a paint finish. Construction of the cross passages occurred during night possessions with the tunnels returned to normal operation during the daytime. Constructed through water bearing sandstone and lined with precast concrete segments, the passages required advance ground treatment and support works. This paper presents the historical background to the Mersey Tunnels and describes the procurement strategy, design and construction approach adopted for these important safety improvements.

The Mojave Desert province is comprised of a diverse group of mountains that range in elevation from about 2,000' (600 m) to 3,000' (900 m), separated by tracts of alluvial cover. The province is bounded on the southwest by the San Andreas fault, on the north by the Garlock fault, on the east by the Death Valley- Granite Mountains fault. Rocks preserved in the Mojave Desert Province collectively record a rich assemblage of Precambrian crystalline basement' ranging in age from ca. 1.8 to 1.35 Ga, upper Precambrian and Paleozoic Cordilleran miogeoclinal sediments and platform rocks, Mesozoic backarc and interarc shallow marine and continental sequences, locally emplaced Permian- Triassic syenitic plutons, extruded hypabyssal volcanic rocks of the ?Jurassic "Sidewinder Volcanic Series," and regionally intruded late Mesozoic granitoid batholithic rocks (Dokka et al., 1988). The Mojave block apparently was a high-standing element for much of the early Tertiary, with strata of Late Cretaceous or early Tertiary age preserved only on its margins. Beginning about in the late Oligocene an intense episode of regional north-south extension was developed in a roughly east- west trending belt that traversed the central part of the province. This extensional belt has been termed the Mojave Extensional Belt. The extensional regime lasted from about 22-17 Ma, and is generally divided into two phases. The first, from about 22-20 Ma records intense extension via the activity of crustal-scale, simple shear, low- angle normal faults, high-angle normal faults, and extensional fracturing, along with intrusion of intermediate to silicic volcanic rocks, including episodes of explosive volcanic activity. The Peach Springs Tuff, a major regional marker unit that extends across the Mojave from Arizona to about Barstow, forms an effective stratigraphic lid on the extensional interval, (i.e., is not rotated) and is dated isotopically at about 18.5 Ma. The extensional episode was followed by an interval of high- angle normal faulting and dike emplacement from about 19 to 17 Ma, and was accompanied by at least local uplift and volcanism. Most volcaniclastic and epiclastic sedimentary units of the central Mojave block post-date the interval of extension and normal faulting, and occur as a complex of marginal alluvial and more interior lacustrine facies that formed as recently as late Miocene (ca 13 Ma). Local sequences (e.g., Lava Mountains) record deposition up to about 8 Ma, but there appears to be a regional "gap" from then until at least local successions record Pleistocene deposition. Magnetic and isotopic age studies indicate a complex history of crustal rotations, distributed across a number of discrete domains, during the past 10 Ma. Some of the youngest volcanic and geomorphic features apparently developed at "holes" formed at the edges of rotated blocks.

"INTRODUCTION The need for a new road crossing at Silvertown is the result of three key drivers:- •,Severe congestion and delay at the Blackwall Tunnel and surrounding road network; •,A lack of network resilience and reliability resulting from a lack of alternative road crossings in east London and the impacts of unplanned closures; and •,The need to support substantial economic development in east and south-east London (jobs and homes) These drivers directly informed the main objectives for a road-based river-crossing solution. The traffic-related problems at Blackwall Tunnel are long-standing and before Transport for London (TfL) assumed control for the strategic road network in London in 2000 the Department for Transport (formerly Dept of Transport) had investigated various relief options including a third tunnel bore and new bridge. This resulted in a new crossing alignment being safeguarded (by direction of the Secretary of State for Transport) and this was refreshed in 2001 in favor of TfL. In recent years (since 2009) TfL as part of the East London River Crossings Programme has undertaken detailed optioneering and feasibility work to address the above ‘need’. This led to the conclusion that a new road tunnel would offer the best solution in preference to bridge, ferry or demand management options. In 2012, in response to a formal request by the Mayor of London, the Secretary of State for Transport confirmed a new road crossing at Silvertown as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) by Section 35 direction under the Planning Act 2008. This NSIP designation meant that TfL as scheme promoter must comply with the National Rail and Road Networks National Policy Statement (NNNPS) and must seek the necessary powers to build and operate the crossing by means of a Development Consent Order (DCO) under the Planning Act 2008."

Quartz crystals are the raw material from which are made the crystal units utilized in filters and oscillators so vital to the performance of all long distance communications systems. These devices act as the heart of equipment that permits a single telephone cable to carry hundreds of conversations simultaneously. Quartz crystals are of value in communications because of this piezoelectric nature, that is when an electric signal is applied to the quartz, there is a resulting mechanical motion and conversely, a mechanical stress results in an electrical output signal. A plate cut from a quartz crystal will oscillate at some specific frequency, which is determined by the physical dimension of the plate. During the early stages of telephony, all quartz plates were cut from natural quartz, which was imported mainly from Brazil. Since the source of this important raw material was based upon a foreign supply which is located at a great distance from the user and could be vulnerable in time of a national emergent, it became necessary to maintain a large inventory of this strategic material. Also due to the considerable cost of natural crystals of a size and quality suitable for Bell System use, an investigation was made by Bell Laboratories into the possibility of developing a substitute material. The effort was successful and led to a joint development program between Bell Laboratories and Western Electric. This program brought about the design of manufacturing facilities capable of producing large quantities of cultured quartz at Western's Merrimack Valley Works, No. Andover, Massachusetts.

The Falcon concentrator is capable of separating minerals in fine size classes based on their differential density. Separation of mineral particles depends upon the fluid flow characteristics and relative movement of particles in a fluid. In the present study, a fluid flow characteristic inside the Falcon concentrator was established through experimentation and modeling. The Falcon concentrator has two fluid entry points: (a) Fluid entering through gravity assisted feeding system and (b) Fluid entering through the fluidized hole on the concentrator wall. In order to identify the role of fluid entering the concentrator, a tracer was injected into the system. As per the tracer based experimentation, it was established that fluid entering through the gravity based feeding system is responsible for thin flowing film formation in the stratification zone where particles are stratified based on their relative density. The momentum balance and continuity equations were simplified for a high centrifugal force field, and the fluid velocity profile was estimated inside the thin flowing film. Estimated fluid flow profiles will help to simulate the particle trajectories inside the Falcon concentrator. The influence of rotational speed, fluid flow rate, and cone angle on the fluid velocity profile were investigated. Fluid thickness over the concentrator wall is also estimated, and it is typically of the order of ~150–200 μm.

This article could be entitled "The Rediscovery of the Windfall Mine," since it was originally discovered early in this century. The "Rediscovery" was made by personnel of Idaho Mining Corp. during the course of an investigation of the Windfall mine beginning in 1967. There had been historic production from the Windfall mine sporadically from 1908 until 1951 and there was present during much of this time a mill that vat leached crushed ore. Mining was underground to a depth of 91 m (300 ft). Prior to Idaho's activities, the mine had been inactive since the early 1950s. Idaho Mining Corp. was an "exploration company," privately owned and based in Reno, NV. The writer was at that time manager of exploration for Idaho Mining. The company held interests in the Cortez Gold mine, then being readied for production, and had conducted exploration for various mineral commodities in Nevada for several years. Idaho's attention was first directed to the Windfall mine in the Eureka District, Eureka County, Nevada (see Fig. 1, Nevada map) by a search of published geologic literature of the state of Nevada. An attempt was made to acquire a library consisting of all of the published geo-data for the state of Nevada as well as to obtain as much of the unpublished material as could be acquired. A study of these data, and in particular Tom Nolan's Professional Paper 406 (1962), indicated that the Windfall mine was anomalous for the Eureka District in that it contained deposits of disseminated gold. This source and other sources indicated that the Windfall had produced from underground operations approximately 59 kt (65,000 tons) grading 12.6 g/t (0.368 oz per ton) gold ore that was processed in a vat leaching operation and that the gold was "invisible" to the naked eye and could not be panned. It was ascertained that there were no active operations near the mine and a geologic reconnaissance was made and a few samples were taken to attempt to determine if the mineralization was indeed disseminated. The initial group of samples around the mine area averaged 1.25 ppm [11.5 g/t gold (0.036 oz per ton)] and the mineralization did appear to disseminate into the wallrock. The next step involved researching the ownership of property in the immediate area of the mine, and [ ] a property map was constructed that showed six or seven different ownerships of patented and unpatented claims, as well as some open ground, in the target area. At the first workshop on Surface Subsidence Due to Underground Mining (1 981 ) , Yarbrough delivered a paper (1 ) describing the mine subsidence insurance program in Illinois operated as the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund (IMSIF) . In this paper we will present claims data and describe changes that have occurred in the Illinois Insurance Code during the first six years the IMSIF has been in existence. The change in the original Illinois Public Act 80-1 41 3 that most affected the public was an amendment increasing the maximum amount of mine subsidence insurance avail- able on a structure from $50,000 to $100,000. Seventy-two counties in Illinois have been undermined for minerals, primarily bituminous coal. In Franklin County (.in the southern part of the state) 36 percent of the land area has been undermined for coal extraction. In St. Clair and Madison Counties , two counties that include the St. Louis Metropolitan area along the western border of the state, 10 percent and 7 percent of the land surface have been undermined. Most of the undermined area in the two counties is beneath urbanized land. In 34 counties, approximately 1 percent or more of the land surface has been undermined (2). The first shaft mine in Illinois was sunk in the city of Belleville (east of St. Louis) in 1842, and the mines of early vintage have initiated the majority of the mine subsidence claims. Data compiled from the first six years reveals that most Illinois mine subsidence events that affect structures occur over abandoned mines where early methods of high- extraction mining practices were used. Maps of these mines operated in the 1800s reveal irregular development of room and pillar areas and poorly defined production areas (panels). Rooms in the mines varied from 15 to 40 feet in width and the pillars varied in width from 5 to 40 feet. The pillars were often long and narrow. Recovery rates in mines that operated prior to 1900 generally averaged 50 per- cent, and extraction rates as high as 80 percent have been documented (2). Some pillar robbing occurred.

4.1 THE GENERAL COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS Clay-based grouts are visco-plastic systems; they are made by adding structure-forming reagents to a clay mineral mortar. Small amounts of cement and various chemical ad¬ditives constitute the reagents. If necessary, fillers also are added. The distinguishing feature of clay-based grouts is that throughout their entire stabilization period they do not form a crystallized structure as does cement grout. The structure of stabilized clay-based grouts does not deteriorate during minor rock movement or upon the initiation of blast¬ing during the construction of a shaft or a drift. Because they can possess good rheological properties during the ini¬tial structure-forming period relative to cement grouts, clay¬based grouts are not easily eroded from large fractures and karstic cavities by flowing ground water. In addition, their finely dispersed clay particles facilitate a greater fracture penetration capacity, especially in dual porosity rocks. Numerous investigations of the structural-mechanical and rheological properties of clay-based grouts by STG have demonstrated that the most effective grouts for pre¬venting the inflow of ground water into underground work¬ings are grouts that have a cement content of 8 to 10% (90 to 120 kg/m3) of the clay grout by mass. The grout should have a density of 1.18 to 1.30 T/m3. Various additional substances and chemicals can be added as additional fillers and structure-forming reagents. In pure ground water at temperatures above freezing, sodium silicate in the amount of 0.8 to 1 % by mass normally is the only structure-forming reagent that is necessary if the proper clay is selected and if it is available. The production process for making clay-based grout is divided into two stages: 1) the production of an initial clay mortar with specified properties and 2) the production of a clay-cement additive grout mixture using the initial grout along with the structure-forming reagents, including the ce¬ment. The properties of clay-based grouts depend on the phys¬ical-mechanical properties of the initial clay mineral, the properties of the cement and the properties of the chemical reagents that are added. 4.1.1 TECHNOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS The dynamic shear stress' To, the viscosity 11, the static shear stress2 0, the maximum shear stress of the structured that the rheological and structural-mechanical prop¬erties of clay-based grouts must fall within the following limits: the dynamic shear stress To = 50 to 200 Pa; the viscosity -9 = 0.02 to 0.07 Pa sec; the static shear stress 0 = 150 to 600 Pa; the plasticity strength Pm of the structure one minute after preparation (according to P.A. Rebinder's method) equals 150 to 500 Pa. The plasticity strength 10 days after preparation is ? 0.15 MPa. The general relationship of the change in the structural strength of clay-based grouts relative to stabilization time is shown in Fig. 32. The figure shows that the structure-form¬ing process for clay-based grouts is characterized by three stages. These stages correspond to the time periods required for conducting the principal operations during the injection of the grout into a fractured aquifer as described below. Stage I, corresponding to the time period T1, reflects the small development of structural strength during early stabi¬lization. During this time, the structural strength must not preclude the capability to pump the grout. The time Tl must correspond to the length of pumping time from the moment water is shut off and mixing occurs until the pump stops forcing the grout through the manifold block and pipeline into the fractured rock as described subsequently herein. Stage II, corresponding to the time interval T2, reflects a sharp but controllable increase in the structural strength of the grout. The length of time period T2 is controlled by the addition of appropriate reagents. Stage III produces the final value of the structural strength. This final strength is used to design the dimensions of the isolation curtain. Consequently, the development of grouts is guided by two principal criteria: 1) the grout must develop the highest possible structural-mechanical properties and 2) it must be able to be pumped by a piston pump prior to final stabili¬zation. Successful grouting depends to a large extent on the correct design of a grout for each specific case. It is impor-

Hydrodynamic investigations in exploratory boreholes and grouting holes are conducted for the purpose of obtain¬ing information about the hydraulic properties of the hydrostratigraphic section to be intersected by the proposed underground workings. The information obtained from the investigations provides the basis for calculating the hydrau¬lic coefficients of fractured permeable rock, the dimensions of the anticipated grout isolation curtain(s) around the un¬derground workings, the number and location of grouting holes, the injection pressure modes, and also the volume(s) of grout that will be required (Anon., 1976, 1978). The following data on each aquifer are obtained from the investigations conducted in monitoring and grouting bore¬holes and the analysis of the results: 1) the top of each hydrostratigraphic unit, 2) the thickness of each unit, 3) the ground water fluid potential distribution in each unit, 4) the coefficient of permeability, 5) the piezoconductivity, 6) the fracture porosity, 7) the geometry of the fractures in the rock, 8) the elasticity-compressibility coefficient of the fractured rock, 9) the chemical composition of the ground water, 10) the direction of flow of the ground water, and 11) the expected inflow rate of water into the shaft, drift or tunnel. STG uses its DAU-3M type flowmeter to conduct in¬vestigations of directions of flow in vertical, inclined and horizontal drillholes. The DAU-6 instrument is used to de¬termine the direction of flow of ground water in each frac¬ture or fractured aquifer. Various singular and double DAU type packers are used for pumping and for injection studies (tests) and for flowmeter investigations. Normally the instruments enumerated above permit in¬vestigations to be conducted in each separate aquifer with¬out reinforcing the holes with casings. On the basis of these investigative data, both the hydraulic properties of unfractured rock and the hydraulic properties of the fractured rock are estimated. Dual porosity rocks require special attention because they tend to segregate the grout. 3.1 FLOWMETER INVESTIGATIONS IN BOREHOLES The STG flowmetric methodology is based on the mea¬surement of the ground water flow rate through the borehole by hydrostratigraphic interval after the disturbance of the hydrostatic equilibrium in the "hole-aquifer system" (after pumping or injecting). The relationship of the head changes to the discharge into or from a particular hydrostratigraphic unit obtained during the tests serve as the basis for calcu¬lating the hydraulic properties. Flowmetric investigations facilitate the determination of the number of aquifers, their depths, their thickness, the hydraulic properties of the fractured rock and the magnitude and direction of the flow of ground water. 3.1.1 FLOWMETER HARDWARE STG conducts flowmetric investigations in boreholes using its DAU-3M-108, DAU-3M-73, DAU-3M-57 and DAU-3M-44 instruments.' They have respective external diameters of 108, 73, 57 and 44 mm. The type of flowmeter selected for use depends on the borehole geometry and the technological scheme for carrying out the investigations. Boreholes with a drilling diameter of 76-93 mm are inves¬tigated with the DAU-3M-73 flowmeter; boreholes drilled by bits with a diameter of 112 mm and more are investi¬gated using the DAU-3M-108 flowmeter. The DAU-3M¬108 and DAU-3M-57 instruments are used for flowmetric investigations with a packer. 3.1.1.1 The Downhole Sensor The sensor design of the DAU-3M-73 hole flowmeter is shown in Fig. 2. The design of the DAU-3M-108 instru¬ment is similar to the design of the DAU-3M-73 instrument. The frame of the flowmeter sensor shown in Fig. 2 consists of a casing, an upper and lower centering mount and two rings to which the guiding rods are attached. The upper rods are built into the connector bushing; the lower rods are built into the coupling sleeve. The borehole cable is attached using a half-coupling, a packing ring and a constriction nut. Thus, the frame of the flowmeter sensor is made so that the free passage of water to the impeller is facilitated along with the necessary rigidity. The primary moving component of the flowmeter is the double-bladed impeller, which rotates on cobalt-tungsten pivots and agate thrust bearings. Special extended air cham¬bers protect the supports of the impeller from the action of the borehole fluid which may contain fibrous and abrasive particles. The air located in the chambers shields the sup¬ports from direct contact with the borehole fluid when the sensor operates in a borehole. The hollow casing of the impeller serves the function of a lower cap. The upper cap is attached to the casing using a threaded connector; it is affixed also with a lock-nut. Mineral models provide a systematic and comprehensive approach for analyzing and fore- casting the behavior of mineral markets and industries.' They also permit the analysis of a wide range of policy decisions. Obviously such models cannot capture all of the intricate relationships that shape the behavior of a mineral market. However, such models have become extremely useful and in many cases support the decision making approach of judgmental analysts. They tend to narrow the range of likely outcomes and thus reduce the risks and uncertainties of investing, trading, and speculating in minerals. Mineral models provide not only answers to "what-if" questions, they also inform analysts of the benefits and costs associated with mineral investment decisions. More recently they have been applied to specific mineral issues of the possible impact of buffer stock stabilization schemes and of import supply restrictions. Mineral Models Defined Because mineral models are so diverse, we must begin with a fairly broad definition. A mineral model is a formal representation of a mineral market, industry or system where the behavioral relationships included reflect the underlying economic and engineering factors as well as the political and social institutions. Of ten, but not always, a mineral model will consist of some combination of the following components: demand, supply, inventories and prices. Modeling of demand behavior normally begins with an interpretation of basic demand responses to prices and income (i.e., the associated price and income elasticities). Price elasticities vary among different minerals and among their diverse uses. They tend to be lower for minerals without close substitutes than for those where such substitutes exist. In addition, these elasticities vary with time as well as with the actual excess demand or excess supply. Variations like these, coupled with the relative instability of prices for a number of minerals, make explanations of demand behavior difficult. The degree to which demand responds to changes in income depends on the income elasticity of the end products to which the minerals serve as inputs. Those products with a relatively low income elasticity tend to experience proportionally smaller swings in sales than those with higher elasticities. The transmission of demand cycles to minerals producers comes through a series of stage-of-process effects. Demand measurement also is influenced considerably by mineral substitution patterns. INTRODUCTION Effective mine ventilation is required to maintain a healthy underground environment for humans. Without effective ventilation, the environment can become unhealthy or hazardous as a result of the depletion of oxygen, contamination with toxic gases, or the buildup of an excessive amount of particulate matter (dust). Each contaminant has an upper limit of concentration that should not be exceeded within an 8-hr period. This is known as the threshold limit value (TLV). The TLV represents an acceptable level of exposure that should produce no ill effects. Unfortunately, more than one contaminant may be present at any one time and the effects of the individual contaminants may be additive, i.e., the effects of each contaminant must be considered simultaneously to determine the potential danger to miners. Possibly the greatest threat to mine-air quality is the uncontrolled underground use of the diesel engine. The diesel engine was invented in 1892 by Rudolf Diesel. His intention was to develop a power source that could burn coal dust as a fuel, but he was unsuccessful in that attempt and had to resort to liquid petroleum fuels (Johnson, 1975). In 1898, the diesel engine was intro¬duced into the United States by Adolphus Busch, who anticipated using it as a prime mover in factories and generating plants. At that time, the diesel engine was a very large and very heavy engine, designed for fixed installations. By 1919, lighter engines were being developed, and by 1931, Caterpillar was marketing a diesel-powered, track-type tractor (Henderson, 1975). Since 1931, the diesel engine has evolved into an extremely popular prime mover in medium and heavy-duty applications. Efficiencies now are on the order of 40% and improvements such as turbocharging and aftercooling have produced engines capable of generating power at a ratio of 0.3 kW/kg (1.0 hp per 5.0 lb) of engine weight. Although the diesel engine is relatively efficient as a mobile power plant, it is far from efficient in terms of the energy produced from the energy potential of the fuel. About 60% of the heat value of the fuel leaves the engine as wasted heat, with about 50% of that heat being emitted through the exhaust pipe and the other 50% being emitted through the radiator or cooling fins. Perfect combustion in an engine would produce only water vapor (H_0), carbon dioxide (CO_), and nitro¬gen (N2) as the byproducts. Since the diesel is not a perfect engine, each pound of fuel burned generates 5.6 m° (200 cu ft) of exhaust gas, containing about 0.009 m3 (0.33 cu ft) of carbon monoxide (CO), 0.009 m' (0.33 cu ft) of nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2, and NOD), and 0.57 m3 (20 cu ft) of carbon dioxide. The balance of the exhaust emission consists of free nitrogen and water vapor (Hurn, 1975). Contrary to popular belief, the diesel is not inherently dirty. Under normal operating conditions, a well-maintained engine neither smokes nor smells. However, the same well-maintained engine can and does produce toxic emissions. A diesel engine is not inherently safe and constitutes a distinct hazard to personnel. This chapter is devoted to a description of the various toxic substances that may be generated by a diesel engine. Although some of these substances may also be produced by blasting or natural causes, the focus of this chapter is on the relationship between the internal- combustion compression-ignition engine (the diesel) and the quality of the mine air. CARBON MONOXIDE Combustion Process During the combustion process (burning) of organic fuels, each atom of carbon combines with two atoms of oxygen, provided that a surplus of oxygen atoms is available. Thus, the carbon is oxidized to carbon dioxide. Most open flames, such as trash fires, camp fires, gas ranges, etc., produce carbon dioxide. However, with insufficient oxygen, incomplete combustion results as the carbon atoms each combine with one atom of oxygen to produce toxic carbon monoxide. Burning charcoal briquettes produce carbon monoxide because the combustion takes place inside the briquettes where sufficient oxygen is not available to the combustion process. Internal-combustion engines, whether burning gasoline or diesel fuel, also produce carbon monoxide. The only oxygen available to the combustion process is that trapped within the cylinder. If the amount of fuel delivered to the cylinder is excessive, there is insufficient oxygen for complete combustion and carbon monoxide production results. In a normally aspirated (nonturbocharged) diesel engine, the amount of air "sucked" into a cylinder is the same on every intake stroke, resulting in complete combustion only at low levels of engine loading, when small amounts of fuel are injected. Higher levels of engine loading cause larger amounts of fuel to be injected into the same volume of air in the cylinder. Unless the volume of air is increased, the combustion process becomes progressively less complete as the amount of fuel increases. Turbocharged engines are able to compensate some¬what for increased loading and increased fuel consumption. The turbocharger acts as a compressor for the intake air, forcing a larger volume of air into the cylinders as the engine speed increases. Hence the turbocharged engine burns cleaner than a naturally aspirated engine and produces slightly less carbon monoxide (Marshall and Fleming, 1971). Much of the underground equipment used today is powered by turbocharged indirect-injection diesel engines. Although these engines emit fewer toxic contaminants than naturally aspirated engines, they do not eliminate the problem. Since the turbocharger is driven by the exhaust gases, rapid accelerations can cause temporary overfueling of the engine until the turbocharger attains a speed sufficient to restore the correct air-to-fuel ratio. During this "turbocharger lag," the combustion cylinders contain insufficient oxygen, causing severe smoking and an increased output of carbon monoxide.

The intelligent selection of wire cloth and perforated plate for screening surfaces seems a rather confusing subject to the newcomer in aggregate processing. The proper application of various screening surfaces is a complicated one and one could consider himself an expert only after many years of working with all applications. However, part of the subject matter could be simplified considerably for, the average screen user. In this paper an attempt will be made to do this, by presenting some comparative specification data along with cost figures Unfortunately, it is impossible in the limited scope of this paper to give actual service comparison records between different cloths or cloth and plate. Anyone who has considered making actual service comparisons for competing screening media is well aware of the almost insurmountable problems Their solution would form the basis for a separate paper on that subject alone. Therefore, this paper will be limited to comparative data up to the point of installation.

The problem of defining the optimum final limits of an open pit mine has challenged the mining industry for the last three decades, mainly due to the great number of variables involved and the sheer computational effort required in real life applications. An actual lignite deposit is used in this study in order to introduce and apply a methodology to be used as a basis for surface mine design optimization. A geologic reserves model of the deposit is first developed with the use of an integrated geostatistical modeling package. The model is transformed into an economic one through the use of flexible objective function formulation(s). The optimization of the final open pit limits is then enabled with the use of a competent, commercial optimizer, and comparative sensitivity analyses are performed in order to study the effect of some basic mining and economic parameters on the optimal pit design. The conclusions drawn can develop useful guidelines for decision making by the mine operator.

A vast majority of longwall operations in the United States use shield-type hydraulic supports to provide ground control along the longwall face. The three-dimensional finite-element technique combined with a progressive failure approach was utilized to simulate interaction between shields and surrounding strata and determine various loading conditions. In addition, a separate finite element model of the shield structure was made to study responses of each long wall shield to the different loading conditions. Shield responses under various loading conditions and the shield characteristics, such as shield stiffness, the ability of resisting horizontal forces, and the effect of shield height, were studied based on the results from finite-element analyses. The results can provide the basis of effective shield design and be used for evaluation of the shield performance. It is suggested to develop a technique incorporating the finite-element method to evaluate the real-time shield performance for the purpose of effective ground control.

Development of the Twin Buttes mine entailed the largest known preproduction stripping job in the history of mining. It linked earthmovers and conveyor belts in a new approach to development of a pit that may reach, or even exceed, dimensions of 1 x 1-1/2 miles at the surface and go as deep as 1800 feet. The orebody to be stripped was covered by an average of 460 feet of alluvial gravels, which presented an initial stripping job of great magnitude. The initial pit layout and the original time schedule established early in 1965 called for the excavation and disposal of about 250,000,000 tons of alluvial overburden before the end of 1969. Allowing about a year for equipment delivery, this schedule left four years to do the job averaging about 62-1/2 million tons per year. In 1964 when The Anaconda Company undertook the development of Twin Buttes, it was recognized that special planning was necessary for the disposal of waste material and tailings. Environ- mental control was a prime consideration and is particularly sensitive in the Twin Buttes area due to the proximity to residential developments. Disposal of the 250,000,000 tons of alluvium, as well as future rock and tailing waste material, presented a problem which Anaconda engineers resolved by designing a plan to spread out much of the alluvium over an extended area, including a massive 11- 1/2 mile dike system which will impound mill tailing in three basins. The United States is the world's most productive nation and its citizens enjoy one of the highest material standards of living of any people in the world. Materials and energy are the lifeblood of any industrialized economy. Annually the United States uses over 4 billion tons of mineral materials and fuels, or 40,000 pounds per person as detailed in Figure 1. Domestic processed materials of mineral origin and energy are valued at more than $150 billion annually, and they are derived largely from domestic sources, supplemented by imports, as detailed in Figure 2. In recent years the superior productivity of the United States has also enabled it to give food and manufactured articles to many other less fortunate nations and peoples of the earth. What then is our concern with materials at this time? Seeing the burgeoning increases in our mineral demand: from 2 billion tons in 1950, to over 4 billion tons today, and projected to 11 billion tons by 2000 - we are getting questions concerning our ability to continue to increase production sufficiently for the future.
