The removal of metals from an acid mine drainage (Leviathan Mine, Alpine County, California) water by precipitate flotation was investigated. The Leviathan waters vary from about pH 4.0 to pH <2.0and contain from about 2,000 to about 12,000 ppm SO42-.The main multivalent metals present in solution are Fe, Ca, Mg, Al and Mn. Both Cu and Co are present in small amounts. The pH was adjusted with lime. The collector used was either sodium oleate or tall oil. The sodium oleate was used as a function of pH to establish optimum flotation conditions and the tall oil was used only at the optimum pH. Dow Froth 250 was used as a frother. In some test additional Cu was added to the system. Excellent recovery of Fe and Cu were achieved at optimum pH. The process achieves results comparable to precipitation and filtration without as much problems with screens blinding because of less material to filter.

The Tolt Pipeline No. 2, West Snoqualmie Valley project, is part of a water supply project linking the Tolt reservoir in East King County to the City of Seattle through a nominal 2.13 m (7-ft) inside diameter conveyance. Receipt of the National, 2002Microtunnel Award provided recognition of the many challenges overcome by this project. Baseline conditions revealed in the Geotechnical Documentation included over-consolidated glacial deposits, landslide and alluvial deposits, artesian water, boulders up to 36-in in diameter, logs, heaving sands, and liquefiable soils beneath the river. Schedule constraints associated with setting the shafts in the floodplain of a salmon bearing river and the fickle performance of the river during those times it was not supposed to flood added to the challenge.

4.1 INTRODUCTION There have been numerous methods developed for predicting the final subsidence and final displacement profiles (Voight and Pariseau, 1970; Brauner, 1973a; Kratzsch, 1983). But for discus- sion purposes, they can be classified into six categories: theoretical, profile function, influence function, graphical, physical, and numerical modeling. The theoretical method employs mainly continuum mechanics theories and attempts to explain the mechanisms that lead to sur- face subsidence. Many models using nearly all kinds of material behavior have been developed. These include elastic (Salmon, 1963; Berry, 1964), plastic (Pariseau, 1968), viscoelastic (Iman, 1965), and elastoplastic (Dahl, 1969). The Profile Function Method is essentially a method of curve-fitting against the measured subsidence profiles in a particular mine or region. There are more than 20 profile functions developed empirically for nearly all major coalfields in the world. These include, to name just a few representative ones: Hungary (Martos, 1958), Japan (Hiramatsu and Oka, 1968), Russia (Avershin, 1947), United Kingdom (Wardell, 1965), and USA (Peng and Chen, 1981; Karmis et al., 1984). The NCB&apos;s graphical method in the subsidence Engineers&apos; Handbook (1975) also belongs to the profile function method. The influence function method was first proposed by Bals (1931/1932). It was further developed in various periods and stages by Knothe (1957), Liu and Liao (1965), Brauner (1973a) and Marr (1975). This method is now widely used in various parts of the world. The physical models include sand (Litwiniszyn, 1959; Pariseau and Dahl, 1968) and gelatin (King and Whetton, 1958; Khair et al., 1986). They are used mainly to study the parameters that control subsidence behavior. The most popular numerical method is the finite element technique. It can simulate nearly every conceivable material behavior, inhomogeneity, bedding planes, anisotropy, and various boundary conditions. This versatility is absolutely necessary considering the ever-changing geologic and mining conditions encountered. In the following sections, only those methods that have been applied to US coalfields will be discussed. Furthermore, the methods for prediction of several key parameters such as maximum subsidence, maximum possible subsidence, and maximum displacement are discussed first, because they are the key parameters to be used in the profile function, influence function, and graphical methods.

INTRODUCTION The process engineer usually is responsible for the design operating philosophy and/or day-to-day operations of a process. Since instrumentation is an integral part of the operation, it is essential that engineers understand the general capabilities of the different types of control equipment available. Many "noncontrol" engineers have become involved with instrumentation for machinery monitoring and control as well as other plant applications. The advent of the microprocessor has led to significant changes in control, both in systems configurations and man-machine interfaces. Today&apos;s concept is called simply "distributed control." What is distributed control? Distributed control is exactly what the name implies; the control system is divided into several functional segments and spread out to cover a process. The systems are distributed for physical, functional, and risk reasons. Before delving further into the specifics of distributed control, let&apos;s look at the evolution of control systems to see how we got here. Instruments initially were located near measurement and control points in the field. Operators physically had to go to the instrument to change setpoints or take measurements. As processes became more complex, it became evident that a central control area was required. This allowed an operator to monitor and control many variables. The operator&apos;s effectiveness was increased dramatically, which resulted in greater efficiency, better quality control, and lower personnel requirements. At the same time, plants became much larger, control applications became more complex, energy became expensive, and the industry became more competitive. All of these factors placed pressure on process and production engineers to get the most for the money. The result was a continuing push to put more instrumentation into a central control room to maximize efficiency and productivity and minimize manpower. This chapter deals in some detail with devices for measuring physical and chemical properties of coal; devices for measuring the weight and weight-rate of flow of coal; devices for the monitoring and control of conveyor systems, solids inventory, fluid flow, liquid level, density, and specific gravity. These instruments have a multitude of uses throughout a coal preparation plant. Most pyrometallurgical processes take place at high temperature with rapid chemical reactions when the elements and compounds are usually liquid or gaseous. Smelting. The classical method of obtaining a metal from its ore or concentrate is to smelt it in a furnace. The initial letter "s" of this word implies that, in addition to the physical process of melting, a chemical change also occurs. This is usually the reduction of metal oxide to metal by carbon or through a series of processes involving oxidation and reduction. Since solid-solid contact would not be sufficient to give a high rate of reaction, most smelting reactions occur by medium of two reactions involving solid-gaseous contact: where M represents a metal. The commonly preferred unit for carrying out these reactions is the blast furnace,1 which is a vertical shaft of refractory brick or water-cooled steel in which lumps of metal oxide and coke are fed at the top, and an air-blast is injected through tuyeres (water-cooled pipes) in the bottom. The method of powering mills such as AG, SAG and Ball has a long and technically interesting history. It can be said that almost every decade in the last half century had its own trend. The trends were dominated by the market demand, the advanced process development and requirement of the mechanical and the electrical technology but mostly by the price of the applied technology. The increasing size of the ring geared mills in the last years requires more awareness on the drive train solution. Special attention must be paid to the mechanics and the requirements of the power grid. Operational challenges such as soft starting and controlled operation as well as the protection of the equipment have gained importance. Frequency converter drive solutions dedicated to single or dual pinion ring-geared mills offer significant advantages over conventional drives due to their application specific features and controls. Solutions with low speed motors as well as high speed motors cover all possible configurations available for ring geared mills.

The control of sulfur dioxide and fly ash in the emissions from coal-fired boilers is a significant segment of the national environ- mental protection program. Developing technologies to accomplish this objective presently emphasize aqueous scrubbing techniques. Should circumstances require aqueous scrubbing for fly ash control only, provision must nevertheless be made to counteract the presence of sulfur dioxide which can create an acidic and potentially corrosive environment. Major technologies for sulfur dioxide control by aqueous scrubbing include, l), recovery processes yielding sulfuric acid or elemental sulfur and 2), throw-away processes which produce a sludge consisting essentially of calcium sulfite or varying amounts of calcium sulfate.1/ Recovery processes are more sophisticated and best suited for locations where there are markets for sulfuric acid or sulfur, or where sludge disposal is an overriding consideration. Throw-away processes are generally less sophisticated but have a problem in that gas scrubbing systems may not operate for practical time periods without failures due to corrosion and to plugging by particulates and precipitates. To overcome this difficulty, some throw-away systems employ an aqueous solution of caustic in the gas scrubbing device to assure maximum water solubility of sulfur compounds, followed by the addition of lime to the scrubbing medium in a system external to the scrubber to produce the throw-away sludge and regenerate the caustic for recycle. Such systems are referred to as double alkali systems.2/

This project involves the reconstruction of a 1,100 ft. long by 75 ft. wide segment of an existing 4 to 5 track subway under Northern Boulevard in the Borough of Queens in New York City. The project includes widening the existing subway to permit the construction of new inbound and outbound subway (T1 and T2) ramps adjacent to and under existing operating tracks. The plan of the project is shown in Fig. 1. Existing tall buildings along the job site and a contaminated groundwater plume under an adjacent rail yard required construction of slurry concrete walls along the east and west construction limits. Groundwater cutoff across the north and south construction limits of the subway was achieved by jet grout walls built across the subway invert slab between existing track and third rails. The work involved dewatering the construction site to a depth of about 50 ft. below street grade. This is a four year project and includes extensive work to maintain and protect subway and vehicular traffic of over half a million commuters a day through the work area. The project cost was $160,000,000.

The Institute of Gas Technology for many years has dedicated a large portion of its research effort to the development of a practical solid-fuel-based gasification process to produce a synthetic natural gas equivalent. The work is being done to prepare for the day when supplemental gas will be needed. This program, initially supported by the American Gas Association, and now by both the Department of Interior&apos;s Office of Coal Research and the American Gas Association, has developed the IGT Hydrogasification Process. This process, now entering the pilot plant stage, is based on the high-temperature, high- pressure hydrogenation of coal with a hydrogen-steam bearing gas. Product gas from this step is cleaned and catalytically methanated to produce a high-Btu gas. Estimated production costs indicate the process will be competitive with natural gas in certain areas of the country when required.

Recent advances in rock mass mechanics and computational technology now allow for stability analysis of excavations in "wet" mines where mining-induced changes in rock mass deformation and fluid flow are coupled and time-dependent. All the usual dry mine parameters including the premining stress state and rock mass properties are taken into account, in addition to water pressure and flow in jointed, possibly porous, rock masses. Finite element analyses of shafts and tunnels as circular, elliptical, rectangular and arched-rectangular hole shapes excavated in an initially stressed and pressurized rock mass indicate that the usual guidelines for optimum shape and orientation of single openings apply. Here, optimum means maximizing the minimum wall safety factor, or equivalently, minimizing the peak stress concentration. The results also show that failure originates in elements at the wall and that the minimum safety factor at the wall in the wet case is always less than the dry case regardless of drainage time allowed.

Structures along the rift were subjected to episodic reactivation. Major north-northeast-trending high-angle normal or reverse faults and northwest-trending trans-current fault systems, may exercise control over ore-forming processes. Gabbro and basalt are the dominant igneous rock types. Carbonatite and kimberlite occur in Nebraska and Kansas. Concentrations of Cu, Ni, Co, Ti, Au, Ag and PG-minerals are known to occur in this setting Arkosic sandstone, siltstone, shale and minor carbonate units occur on top of the rift basalts and in flanking basins where they may reach thicknesses of 10 km. The potential for stratiform or unconformity-related metal liferous deposits must be considered.

This paper is an accumulation of information on the geology, mineralogy and mining of the Hectorite clay deposit owned by NL Chemicals (U.S.A.), Inc. The mine is located in San Bernardino County, California approximately 35 miles east of Barstow and 1-1/2 miles south of U.S. Highway 40. The region is known as the Mojave Block which is a region bound by the San Andreas fault zone to the southeast and the Garlock fault zone to the North. The faults of both zones are active, vertical faults along which movements are mainly horizontal. Most of the faults within the Mojave Block are high angle faults which trend northwest. They are considered part of the San Andreas fault system and are a result of the right- lateral movement characteristic of this system. The east-trending faults are also high angle faults, along which movement has displaced rock units vertically. Manix fault is the only mapped fault that shows evidence of left slip which is characteristic of the Garlock sys tem to the North.

As you know most of the gold and silver is produced by one of the following processes: (1) Agitated Leaching - Carbon adsorption or Merrill-Crowe (2) Heap Leaching - Carbon adsorption or Merrill-Crowe The figure 1 shows a typical flowsheet for recovery of gold and silver using Agitated or Pachuca Leaching Operation. The ore is crushed and ground and then leached in cyanide tanks solution using either Pachucas with air agitation or tanks with mechanical agitation. The soluble metal values are separated from the pulp by counter-current washing. The precious metals from cyanide solution are either recovered by zinc dust (Merrill-Crowe Process) or by loading on carbon and stripping with hot caustic cyanide solution. Gold and silver are electrowon on steel wool cathodes.

To evaluate the potential for process solutions to contaminate groundwater outside of the area of the Oxide Pit, it is necessary to predict the ultimate maximum pit lake elevation once pit-related mining activities have ceased. A water balance model was developed based on the existing pit geometry, the groundwater flow equation, and assumed hydrologic input parameters. The model assumed that at any point in time, total inflow into the system (i.e., direct precipitation, surface water and groundwater) minus outflow from the system (evaporation from the lake surface) was equal to the change in the pit water volume. The pit lake depth over time was predicted by assuming a succession of steady- state water balance conditions over short time increments. An analytical method using a spreadsheet and computer model was employed in this study to model the filling of the lake in the Oxide Pit. A sensitivity analysis was performed to evaluate uncertainty associated with the input parameters in the model. The sensitivity analysis indicated that the model was most sensitive to values of precipitation and evaporation and to the static water table.

Gentlemen, today I would like to talk to you about metal and nonmetal mine health and safety--past, present and future. Briefly, I will comment on the past because it is important to an understanding of our present activity and our plans for the future. Federal inspection of noncoal mines was not authorized until 1966, when congress passed the federal metal and nonmetal mine health and safety act; public law 89-577, with the passage of this act, the federal inspector, for the first time, had the delegated authority and responsibility to enforce health and safety regulations designed to prevent personal injuries and occupational diseases, the new law also provided for the education and training of our miners; assistance to the operator through the transmission of technical and scientific information and assistance and equally important, the law made provision for state participation in the congressional mandate to prevent injuries and save lives in the mineral industry, Before I tell you about our program and our future plans, I want you to know that I am here to listen as well as to talk! In my view, the only kind of communication that is meaningful is two-way communication. Our nationwide progress in metal and nonmetal mine health and safety during 1972 cannot be measured in reduced fatalities or injuries. The unforeseen tragedy that took pace in Kellogg, Idaho, in may of last year mode that almost a certainty.

This project evaluated the performance of nine passive treatment methods by studying 137 treatment units in eight eastern states. Performance was normalized according to construction cost, projected service life and tons of acid load treated. Results were dimensioned as $/tons of acid load treated/year. These costs were then compared to those of chemical treatment. Sites that achieved acid load reductions at costs below those of chemical treatment were considered successful. In addition to evaluating the performance of the treatment methods, this paper describes the various passive treatment systems, their applications and performance data for individual treatment units.

This paper discusses the overall challenges to construct a 15,125.7 m (49,625 LF),wastewater drainage tunnel in Cobb County, Georgia by a joint venture of Gilbert Southern Corp. and S.A. Healy Co. and a construction manager Parsons, with Jacobs Associates as a subcontractor. The goal of the project is to provide wastewater retention during peak usage and is connected to a treatment facility near the Chattahoochee River. The primary component of the project is the TBM-driven hard rock tunnel. Additional works include drill and blast areas; four intake interceptors, two construction shafts and a 33.5 m (110 ft), diameter pump station shaft.

A research project was undertaken to determine if coal addition tofluxed-magnetite pre-fired pellets would reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx)emissions during pellet induration. Iron oxidation rate tests, coal oxidation rate tests and calcination rate tests were conducted in a laboratory furnace to determine the amount of coal necessary to provide adequate heat for limestone calcination without producing detrimental effects to magnetite oxidation. Pilot scale pot-grate tests were then performed with and without coal in the pre-fired pellets to verify pellet quality parameters and nitrogen oxide emissions. The off-gas during each pot-grate test was analyzed for NOx, CO2, CO, SOx, and O2. There was approximately a ten percent reduction in NOx emissions with coal addition during the normal pot-grate firing cycle. There was a 75% reduction in NOx emissions during firing cycles that used 25% to 75% excess air during firing rather than the normal 300% excess air.
