The Stillwater District is located in south central Montana approximately 75 miles southwest of Billings, the state's largest city. It lies along the northeast front of the Beartooth Mountains and is within the boundaries of the Custer and Gelatin National Forests. The district contains some of the nation's most spectacular mountain scenery. Montana's highest peaks, including 12,799 foot Granite Peak, rise a few miles south of the area. Much of the district is located on a gently undulating plateau which averages 8500 ft. above sea level, broken by hills up to 10,000 feet and slashed by glacially carved canyons, some of which are more than 3,000 feet deep.(Fig. 1) Immediately to the north and east, the land falls away to the Great Plains, stretching unbroken to the Mississippi River. Two major tributaries of the Yellowstone River, the Stillwater and Boulder Rivers, traverse the area and several large streams originate in the district itself. Access to the high mountain country and the adjoining Beartooth Primitive Area is restricted to a few horse and jeep trails continuing from the terminus of improved roads in the bottom of the Stillwater and Boulder Valleys. Hunters, fishermen and cabin owners make intensive use of the area along its improved transportation routes, but hikers seldom venture more than three miles beyond the end of the roads. People from the Billings area are the most frequent visitors.

A variety of dynamic failure cases with regional impact were described at a bump symposium held in 1958. These types of events, while rare, are of particular interest because their ability to impact a large area has disaster potential. These cases can be grouped into two broad classes of events by mechanism. These are (1) a slip along steeply dipping faults and (2) the fracturing of strong strata above or below the coal seam. Both failure modes produce dynamic or “shock” loads on the perimeter (roof, rib and floor) of mine openings. Special consideration should be given to these failure modes in the planning of deep coal mines, since their occurrence is not within the professional experience of many contemporary workers. In addition, their potential is not evaluated by many of the analysis tools commonly used to evaluate hazards in coal mine plans.

INTRODUCTION The finding or acquisition of ore bodies containing 200,000 opt gold and greater is becoming more difficult. There are more investors and small heap leach operators who have or can raise the capital to make the investments in the large ore bodies. Echo Bay Mines' approach has been to regionally develop small ore bodies, two or three in the same geographic location, which when considered together contain over 200,000 opt gold. CONCEPT The "world class" ore body syndrome, which many large gold producing companies maintain, can restrict company growth if the finding or acquisition of these large ore bodies is not forthcoming. Another approach has been taken by Echo Bay Mines. The concept is to regionally develop two or three small ore bodies suitable for processing with portable equipment. The systematic scheduling of mining, processing with a single flexible processing plant using the same management/ operator team can reduce your overall investment. The initial selection of mining and crushing equipment suitable for sun11 open pit operations is essential. A very viable option in the mining sequence is to use contract mining/crushing/screening/agglomerating and stacking. This option also lowers your initial capital investment and increases the flexibility in mining as you move from one mining operation to another. LOCATION AND SEQUENCING One single small ore body of itself is not attractive enough for the large producer. The recovery of the initial capital investment, although very rapid, does not make a viable project. The only alternative is to find two or more small ore bodies close enough geographically to each other so that the same management/operator team can be used to run the operations as each is put into operation. Echo Bay Mines has regionally located several ore bodies ranging in recoverable ounces up to 100,000 oz. These small separate ore bodies, located within a 30-mile radius of each other, for planning purposes have been considered as one single ore body. The first small ore body has the initial burden to recover the capital invested in the office, laboratory, power plant and processing plant. Other capital investments such as water supply, access and haul road, fencing, septic system, pads and ponds are reoccurring at each mine site. The first small ore body must recover the initial capital investment in the movable structures as well as the reoccurring capital investment in the fixed structures very rapidly. A total capital recovery time of 6 to 9 months should be used as an economic decision point for both choosing which small ore body should be processed first, and what the plant design capability should be. The sequencing of the small mines is very critical. All the fixed structures mentioned above must be installed at the second mine site before the first mine has been mined out. The ideal sequencing will allow for only one month between shutdown of the first small mine and production from the second. SPECIFIC OPERATION Echo Bay Mines has completed the construction of the Illipah Mine located in White Pine County, Nevada, with this small mine sequence approach. The Illipah Mine is a 40,000 ounce recoverable gold ore body. This ore body met all the necessary requirements. "Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), or drones, capable of collecting and retrieving water samples from pit lakes, tailings ponds and other mine water basins will revolutionize environmental programs by lowering sampling costs and reducing safety related risks. Costs typically include a boat and associated equipment, boat transportation, road maintenance, water safety devices, water safety training, and additional staff. Typically, the total cost can exceed $20,000 USD per sampling event (excluding lab analyses). Hazards include potential for drowning, unstable pit walls, and unconsolidated sediment surrounding tailings ponds. Hatch has developed a novel device for aerial drones which currently enables the collection of water samples from depths up to 390 ft (119 m). This system only requires a pilot, a sample technician, and a safe operations point overlooking the water body. Hatch anticipates this will reduce monitoring cost by at least 50% while improving safety, reducing staffing requirements and accelerating data acquisition. This manuscript demonstrates profiling and sample collection from a 95 ft (29 m) deep reservoir and a 377 ft (115 m) deep pit lake, and highlights the potential of this emerging technology. INTRODUCTION Working on or near water at active, closed, or abandoned mine sites is inherently dangerous. Between 1996 and 1999, the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reported 17 fatalities involving drowning at US metal, non-metal, and coal mines (MSHA, 2000). Open pit mines which fill with water following mine closure, called pit lakes, present numerous risks to environmental monitoring teams including drowning, hypothermia, falls to the ground from the top of high walls, and rock avalanches resulting from steep, unstable pit walls. Some pit lakes are simply not easily accessible for ongoing monitoring. However, the routine collection of water samples from the entire water column on at least an annual basis is required to monitor the evolution of water quality over time, to verify the accuracy of numerical predictions, and to manage lake water chemistry in order to produce “treatable” influent to water treatment plants, and ultimately, produce acceptable site discharge water quality. As a product of these risks and the need for water sample, mining companies spend considerable expense on pit lake safety as part of monitoring. This includes training personnel for “on water” duties and hazards, purchasing or hiring specialized equipment and personnel (such as boats, boat operators, personal floatation devices, and mustang suits), stabilizing pit walls and maintaining safe access roads to the lake surface, employing spotters with direct communication to emergency medical services to watch sampling activities (because cell phones and radio signals can be blocked by pit walls), and utilizing redundancy to prepare for unexpected incidents and accidents. For example, one Canadian mining company requires pit lake water samplers to hold Marine Emergency Duties (MED) training to ensure the entire boat crew is sufficient and competent for the safe operation of the vessel, and uses three boats for water sampling: two on the water at all times, and one on the shoreline, ready to deploy. The costs of these safety mechanisms greatly adds to the overall expense associated with pit lake sampling. Consequently, environmental programs may need to reduce the frequency of pit lake sampling in order to keep monitoring programs within an acceptable budget"

Mineral resource classification is described in both the SME and CIM Standards for Mineral Resource Reporting. The CIM Standard states “… sampling … is sufficient to assume geological and grade or quality continuity between points of observation”, thus is a function of continuity and sample spacing. Continuity can be measured by use of a variogram model, but average sample spacing in three dimensions is more difficult to measure. The declustering algorithms provided with Geostatistics software, are commonly used to weight data for statistical analysis due to the sometimes-irregular spacing between drill holes during exploration. The weights are lower when data is closer, reflecting shared influence between samples, and higher for isolated samples reflecting independence. This paper will discuss the potential to use estimates of the declustering weight as an inverse relative measure for average sample spacing to gauge the confidence of the estimate independent of the single nearest sample. PROBLEM The classification of mineral resources and reserves has long been a combination of science, past experience of the estimator, judgment, and feeling. All of the definitions as presented in the standards of the various countries that participate in CRIRSCO are similar and deal with “sample points sufficiently closely spaced to support confidence in the continuity of …” This has been interpreted as the distance between the block estimated and the nearest sample (or samples). Geostatistics gave us the calculation of the estimation variance of the block, an implicit part of the calculation of weights in Kriging, to account for the confidence in the estimate. More recently, “Kriging Efficiency” has been used, however it is still dependent on the estimation error and responds in a similar fashion to the distance to the closest sample. It is also sensitive to the variogram nugget. Many of these methods result in very low distance/high confidence measures for blocks adjacent to a sample point with confidence decreasing (sometimes rapidly) as the distance to one nearest sample increases. This results in the “spotted dog” phenomenon where individual samples are surrounded by a higher classification near each sample decaying into pattern of decreasing confidence halos. In addition to the visual image of the spots, this raises the more practical problem of mine design when the classification changes between measured, indicated and inferred. This has led to ad hoc methods to classify material within the mining block so all of the stope receives that classification. These manual methods re both labor intensive and subjective. A popular technique is a multiple search method, where the estimator defines a minimum of number of samples from a minimum number of holes within a nested set of search distance that are used to classify estimates. These specified set of increasing distances are usually proportional to the variogram range. While this is generally a good technique and overcomes the spottiness of the closest sample or kriging error, it has certain issues including:

"History - How did you get into mining and involved with SME?Unlike many past presidents, I do not come from a mining lineage. I liked math in high school and believed I wanted to be an engineer. I told my math teacher that, and he laughed in my face. I believe that humiliation is what carried me through engineering school. At the time my ability to go to college relied on how inexpensive I could make it. My brother told me that there were a lot of scholarships in mining engineering, and I should apply to mining schools. As usual, he was right and I was off to the University of Idaho to study. My first summer break I got a job with Hecla at a mine in Arizona. I was a laborer on a shotcrete crew. I knew after the first summer that I loved underground mining, and I never considered changing disciplines. Looking back, I was working in miserable conditions (hot, humid), on a miserable job (shotcrete), where I got injured, and two summer student roommates died in a car accident on the commute home after work. I had every reason to hate the industry, as I had seen virtually everything bad about what we do. But I didn’t, I loved it. I said I was good at math, I never said I was smart.I joined SME in college because I was told to by the head of the mining school, Dr. Jack Hoskins. You did what Jack told you to do. I got involved because I went to an annual meeting and the papers in the underground sessions were terrible. I refer to bad papers as the “Tensile strength on cable bolts in sub-arctic regions on Tuesday” papers. Real snoring fodder. I don’t remember who I was complaining to, but they told me to quit my grumbling and fix it. So I chaired a session, and tried to get only good quality papers, something that has been my mantra for years with the Mining & Exploration Division. I also volunteered to help the local sections too. Then one day I woke up as president.What is your opinion of the health of the mining industry?The mining industry is in bad shape. Coal is under attack and will likely never recover to its former greatness. Our President has banned new coal leases, and the state of California is forcing people it does business with to divest their interests in coal companies. And that all happened in just in a few short weeks this January. Usually in America you get a trial before you are given a death sentence, but not with coal."

In an age where customer service and quality drive today's industry and business, no service or product is exempt from these demands. Industry and business are streamlining everything from people to equipment and today have a heavier reliance on the performance and quality of their assets and equipment, (one of the keys to staying competitive). In the mining process industry, the centrifugal slurry pump is a key piece of equipment that keeps product moving and aids in generating revenue for its owner. The continued improvement and customer success lies in a team effort between the mining industry and the pump manufacturers. We, the pump manufacturers, need to keep improving our designs to further extend the life of our pump with fewer failures and promote to our customers proper maintenance of the pumps to continually keep unexpected failures to a minimum. Strict equipment maintenance, as thoroughly demonstrated by the military, is key to the long life and success of any piece of equipment. In the often harsh duty of the centrifugal slurry pump, maintenance is something that requires "attention to detail". No area of the pump is exempt from attentive maintenance. Here, discussions will focus on the areas of the mechanical drive end, wet end, seals, and extended pump shut down and start up. There has not been a slurry pump designed to maintain or repair itself. So in effect, each pump warrants able bodied maintenance persons to maintain them who continually observe all the rules of safety. Prior to any maintenance discussion or action, the issue of safety should always be addressed. Here, as with everywhere, the same rules apply. Work at a safe pace, note all safety precautions, use associated safety equipment and personal protective attire, observe all tagout and lockout procedures, and most importantly, be aware.

"Design of effective mine water treatment plants depends on the ability to reliably predict treatment outcomes, but systems with multiple chemical and physical treatment processes and recycle loops can be difficult to model. GoldPHREEQC is a modeling framework that integrates mass and flow routing capabilities of GoldSim software and water quality calculations provided by PHREEQC, and is well-suited to modeling parameters of interest in the mining industry, especially metals and sulfate. Physical processes such as membrane separation and greensand filtration are modeled by defining mass rejections for each parameter and flow routing based on vendor projections and bench- or pilot-scale equipment testing. GoldPHREEQC models chemical precipitation processes such as HDS metals removal and gypsum precipitation by (1) performing surface-aging and solubility calculations in PHREEQC and (2) using the GoldSim framework to direct supernatant and precipitate to subsequent process steps. Users can apply this modeling framework to predict effluent water quality, chemical requirements, sludge production, and required equipment capacity to support design, troubleshooting, and cost estimating. While respirable dust monitoring has long been done on the basis of mass concentration, it is increasingly recognized that specific dust characteristics may play an important role in health outcomes. Scanning electron microscopy with energydispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) can be used for detailed particle analysis, but the quality of results can be dependent on the sample substrate; ideally, particles should be deposited on a smooth, uniform substrate like polycarbonate (PC). While direct air sampling onto PC filters is possible, this is not the standard approach in many situations. For example, in coal mines, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) filters are often used. They enable conventional mass-based analysis — of the total respirable dust, and the content of crystalline silica in this fraction — but are fibrous and thus not ideal for SEM-EDX or other microscopy. To address this issue, the current work tested a simple method to recover respirable dust particles from PVC filters and redeposit them to PC. Results generally indicated that recovered particles are representative of the original dust sample in terms of mineralogy distributions. Where this was not the case, the issue appeared to be with high particle loading density during SEM-EDX work rather than related to the recovery/redeposition method itself. This bodes well for applications where a single PVC filter sample could be used for nondestructive analysis to determine respirable dust mass and/or respirable silica mass, followed by preparation for SEM-EDX analysis to evaluate particle characteristics. The recovery and redeposition method might also be adapted for other applications, such as to enable the analysis of respirable dust samples collected by the continuous personal dust monitor (CPDM).

"What is your assessment of the minerals business?My experience with mining has been primarily in the coal sector until about 10 years ago, when I also became heavily involved in the aggregates and industrial minerals sectors. I have also had peripheral involvement through family and partners in the gold sector, with just enough exposure to gold to become fascinated. In 1994, I visited Ghana and considered the possibility of taking an expat assignment at a surface gold mine that had just been started.It is not news that the coal sector in this country has suffered tremendously in recent years. Especially hard hit is the central Appalachian region, where a number of factors combined have had a devastating effect on production, jobs and the economy. These factors include federal regulations affecting coal production and use, higher production costs and decreasing market share of Appalachian coal by the switch from lower sulfur coal in favor of lowercost, higher sulfur coal from the Illinois Basin, as utilities have installed scrubbers to comply with Phase II of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. Nationally, the lower cost of natural gas has been a huge factor affecting coal use. In Kentucky, for example, which exports to other states around 70 percent of its coal, those markets are disappearing, as utilities close coal units in favor of natural gas. This is a structural change in the electricity market, and one that will become more pronounced as federal greenhouse gas regulations are implemented.We often hear the phrase, "the war on coal." While there are certainly a number of market factors affecting coal production and use, this phrase captures a different element that is all too real. The attacks have come from environmental activist groups for many years; from some in the media and, in the last few years, from a White House administration that believes strongly in alternatives to coal. Then, there really is an alternative to coal in the form of the previously untapped unconventional gas reserves that allowed utilities to move away from coal.Coal mining will continue in this country. In fact, it appears that our production is holding fairly steady at about a billion tons a year. And predictions that I have seen indicate this will continue for the next few years. What impact the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan will have beyond 2020 is another question.What do you feel is the future of the minerals industry - near term and longer term?Our society depends on the future of minerals in this country being strong. Near term, we are going through some of the typical cycles. Having also been involved in aggregates during the last few years, the business follows government infrastructure projects, such as highway construction and public and private sector development. Those sectors are heavily dependent upon government spending and a strong economy. Increased spending in those sectors, which appears to be on the horizon, should provide additional market shares for aggregates."

"What is your history and how did you get involved in mining?Like many SME members, I came from a mining community with a family history in mining, in my case Walkerville, MT. Both of my grandfathers were underground miners. My father was a miner for a short time. He later sold drinks to the miners. Unfathomable by today’s standards, my dad would pick up the miners’ checks at the pay office and have them cashed and waiting with a shot and beer for the miners when their shift ended. My mother was a nurse, who from time to time, would patch up an unfortunate miner. I remember walking past multiple picket lines on the way to and from grade school, watching homes being boarded-up. I grew up with a deep respect for the critical relationship between labor and management.I had no intention of going into mining and initially set out to pursue a career in chemical engineering. But I attended my first two years of engineering at Montana Tech, due to the proximity and affordability. This is where I met Dr. Tom Finch, a mining professor who taught statics to the engineering students. After a coaching session in a hallway, half way through my sophomore year, I switched to mineral processing engineering. In his colorful way, Professor Finch advised me that, “You do not want to make #@*!! erasers and #@*!! Jell-O the rest of your life go talk to the guys in mineral processing.” He was very persuasive and here I am today.How about your involvement with SME?I encountered SME out of school and a little later in my career. Terry Maio and Jim Arnold invited me to local section meetings in the Missouri Lead Belt. That was my first exposure to the technical programming and relationship building that was possible at the local level. After Ozark Lead shut down and I relocated to Nevada, Rich Johnson, Scott Barr and Dave Collins encouraged me to attend my first annual meeting in Salt Lake City, UT. I joined SME at that time and was fortunate to be engaged by members like Art Schweizer and Jim Arnold, and I soon began the leadership progression for the Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division. Since then, I have supported SME at the national and the local level serving in multiple roles and capacities."

The Surface Mining and Reclamation Act of 1977, PL 95-87 (The Act) granted the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) the duty of collecting fees from the active coal mining activities to be used in abating the hazards associated with abandoned coal mines. Since the passage of the Act, OSM has been instrumental in closing a multiple of mine hazards and in full cooperation with the states involved. Complete mine closures range from simply filling a subsidence hole to exodic designs costing thousands of dollars, such as in the case of the Portal Park swimming pool in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Portal Park olympic sized swimming pool was built over an abandoned coal mine by a group of local citizens and given to the city of Colorado Springs. This pool receives the largest number of users each year. During the past four years, OSM has abated six mine related hazards in and around the pool. During the summer of 1982, the pool started tipping causing the pool waters to run out the west end. This pool tipping and the associated cave-in problems caused great concern to the city and the local users. This citizens concern generated a request from the city for OSM to assist in checking out the pool problems. Early in 1983, OSM initiated a driling program to investigate the subsurface voids. This drilling effort revealed several large voids within a few feet of the pool deck, with all voids inundated with ground water. Therefore, the void filling method favored the hydraulic backfilling needed to be confined to the area under the pool. This confining problem lead to the development of the gravel bulkhead cutoff walls to confine the backfilling effort to the areas under the swimming pool.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) initiated a testing program to assess the effects of lateral loading on various standing supports used in underground coal mines. This study is not intended to endorse a particular type of standing supports nor to provide a comparison between different types of standing supports. This paper aims to measure the lateral loading capacity of two types of standing supports and evaluate how it affects their vertical loading capacity and yielding mechanisms. The study utilizes the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) at NIOSH Pittsburgh. Type-1 support is characterized by telescopic tubes made from ASTM A-513 steel with a specified locking mechanism, and Type-2 support comprises a single component constructed from ASTM A500 Welded Grade C pipe. Vertical load tests were carried out to assess the designed performance of Type-1 and Type-2 props. Type-1 props demonstrated a "constant yielding" behavior, achieving an ultimate capacity of up to 140 kips. Type-2 props showed a "load shedding" behavior, reaching peak verti- cal loads of up to 191 kips. Buckling analysis revealed that Type-1 props were not designed to buckle, and Type-2 props failed due to buck- ling rather than material yielding. Under vertical pre-loading, lateral loading tests showed that Type-1 props can withstand about 9 kips, and Type-2 props can withstand about 10.79 kips of lateral load. This represents roughly 6% of their vertical loading capacities. Testing props under lateral loads in addition to their intended vertical loads showed that the lateral loads could influence their loading mechanisms. Type-1 props did not exhibit the expected "constant yielding" behavior under lateral load but instead showed "load shedding" decreasing their rated vertical capacity by 70%. At high vertical pre-loading, Type-2 props demonstrated "constant yielding" behavior instead of the anticipated "load shedding," leading to a 60% reduction in their rated vertical capacity. These findings provide valuable insights into the behavior of these props under different loading conditions, aiding in their efficient use and design in underground mining operations.

"In making strategic economic decisions, it is important for a mining company to gain insights on the impact of significant political, social and economic issues when planning for present and future mines. The size of any mine, measured by the average number of employees working in the mine, will likely vary according to the pressures generated by the significant issues from one year to another. The objective of this study is to develop a model that represents U.S. underground coal mine size transitions during the period 2002-2012 using data derived from the MSHA databases. Coupled with information on significant issues over the past ten years, this model is used to gain insight on the impact of the issues on mine sizes. Results indicate that the structural impact of the combined driving pressures can be discerned by examining the year-to-year stability of mine-size categories. The effects of The MINER Act, the Obama Administration environmental policies on coal, and the coal market are evident. The lessons learned from these analyses give good insights on what the industry and market responses have been on the structure of the underground coal industry over the period of study. INTRODUCTION It is apparent that key driving issues affect the structure and viability of the coal industry. The driving issues may be political, social, and/or economic in the final analysis, but are generally rooted in reaction to dramatic and publicized events or movements. Mine disasters, an increase in miners’ disease prevalence, strife in the coal fields, and negative environmental impacts on air, land or water can capture the attention of the media and the public. Some of the issues occur over a long period of time, like the current global climate change movement. The coal industry veteran can sense the changes in political and social sentiment, and attempt to react to the economic repercussions; however, the insights from the media and from unique combinations of driving pressures are difficult to fathom. Thus decisions made on inadequate information related to the driving pressures and their likely impacts could lead to missteps in corporate and market restructuring. One way to gain some more insight on the potential impacts is to examine the complicated restructuring of mine operations in reaction to the driving pressures of the recent past. This paper examines an 11-year history of the changes in the underground coal industry structure, as reflected by changes in the numbers of mines in various statuses by mine-size categories. Superimposed on the results of mine-size changes is a mapping of the key driving pressures that occurred over the same period, 2002-2012. It is assumed that using this methodology, some important insights can be gained on the immediate and delayed responses to the driving pressures during that period."

"Iron ore in Minnesota probably carries a heavier tax burden than any mineral in any other place in the world. The State Tax Commission, created in 1907, originated the system, and with the assistance of the School of Mines is constantly making such adjustments, changes and increases as appear necessary, in order to place mineral reserves on the assessment rolls at their true and full present taxable value. The ore bodies on the Mesabi are so well defined by drilling and underground devel¬opment that it is possible to estimate very exactly the volume on every forty acres of land taken as a unit. This is done by the operating or holding company and reported annually to the Tax Commission, Who check the estimates, having all data, and- proceed to fix the valuation for taxation purposes.The first step is to ascertain a general average selling price in open market, over a period of years ; then the total cost per ton (exclusive of royalty) to produce and market the ore. The difference between the average selling price and producing cost per ton is taken as the future full value per ton. This is then discounted at a rate of interest that represents the present and possible future worth of money, over a period of years that will be required to exhaust the ore body, giving the present full value per ton., Iron ore is taxed at 50 per cent of its full value, while other property is taxed at 33 1/3 per cent and 25 per cent."

We are in the midst of a transportation revolution. From the Wright Brothers to the SST. From the Toonerville Trolly to the 120-mile-an-hour Northeast Corridor train. From Christopher Columbus to Neil Armstrong. There is another side to this revolution and it is going on every day at our mines and factories. We call it bulk distribution. Perhaps ordinary sounding, but every bit as exciting as those other transportation innovations. Basically, we have gone from bag to bulk, and in the process reached that Last Frontier in manufacturing cost savings. By revitalization of our distribution system, we have made it possible for our mines and factories to realize fully the vast economies of spage-age manufacturing techniques and accomplishments. The pacesetters in this distribution revolution have been you gentlemen, the producers and shippers of dry mineral products. In this area bulk distribution grew up. And here most of the current innovations are being introduced. Management of your industry was early to realize the economic advantages of bulk distribution. Distribution costs of your products comprises a sizeable, portion of the selling price and management is sensitive of any developments which may even slightly reduce the cost of transportation, marketing or the exploration of new frontiers.

Interstate 70 running into the mountains west of Denver, CO is the main access to the state?s numerous ski areas and other tourist attractions. As such, the highway is a vital part of Colorado?s economy. Due to the mountainous terrain in which it winds, I-70 is limited to two lanes in either direction. And, during the past few decades, the volume of traffic has increased to the point where motorists encounter major delays, particularly on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings heading west from Denver, and then again on Sunday evenings heading east. In the past, those delays occurred mostly during the ski season. However, many of the mountain towns have been successful in turning their resorts into year-round vacation destinations. A good move economically, but the pressure added to I-70 has caused even greater traffic delays, sometimes to the point where some Front Range residents avoid trips to the mountains.

Pillars are used as the primary support structures for underground mining to maintain stability by supporting the over laying strata. In the case of horizontal seams, the pillars are typically subjected to axial loading due to the weight of the overburden and/or abutment stresses, while in the case of inclined seams they are subjected to oblique loading due to both the vertical and horizontal in-situ stress.

An area in Southwestern Wyoming is rapidly becoming the soda ash capitol of the world. Starting only 20 years ago from a unique deposit of trona, the out-put has rapidly increased until now about half of the soda ash produced in the United States comes from this area. Chemically, soda ash is sodium carbonate, a large tonnage, widely used alkali. The largest single industrial use is in glass manufacture, where 25 tons of soda ash are used in producing 100 tons of glass. Other big users are the detergent and chemical industries. The trona deposits in the Green River basin of Wyoming, were formed about 75 million years ago as part of a geologic period when an ancient lake alternately went through periods of being a large fresh water or smaller brine lake. Today these deposits lie from 800 to 3000 feet below the surface in a semi-arid, almost desert region just west of the Rocky Mountain Continental Divide at an elevation of 6200 feet. In this area there is a prevailing westerly breeze and almost every afternoon the velocity reaches very windy conditions. Rainfall is minimal, being only 6-8 inches of moisture per year with an evaporation rate exceeding 24-inches. Most of the moisture comes in winter snows or summer thunderstorms. Temperatures are low with below zero weather dur¬ing most of the winter and early morning frost is not uncommon during the summer months. There are many trona beds varying in thickness from a few inches up to 15 feet. The deposits now being mined vary from 8 to 10 feet in thickness. The ore is mined by driving tunnels either via conventional explosives or with continuous boring machines. It is transported to the shafts via conveyor belts
