Low metal prices and increasingly stringent environmental regulations, coupled with the threat of higher governmental royalties are adversely affecting both existing and new operations. Existing operations must therefore be run at maximum operating efficiencies to enable mining companies to survive and grow. Well planned and executed "outsider" reviews can help achieve this goal. Many mine managers and those who direct them resist the idea of "outsider" reviews for a variety of reasons, some valid and some not. Those managers who do bring in the "outsiders" are nearly unanimous in reporting that the exercise in self-discipline was well worth the pain and effort and repaid the cost many times over. This paper makes a strong case for "outsider" reviews and gives recommendations on the kinds of reviews to undertake. The authors draw upon their nearly 70 years combined experience, much of which has been in operations.

The electrochemical nature of mineral-collector interactions and their relationship to flotation have been investigated to develop a better understanding of the factors controlling sulfide mineral beneficiation. Spectrophotometric and electrochemical techniques have been used to examine the reactions occurring on electrodes composed of a bed of bornite particles in the presence and absence of potassium ethylxanthate (KEtX) at a pH of 9.2. The combined techniques showed that KEtX sequentially reacts with bornite by (1) a chemisorption reaction forming ca hydrophobic species between --0.4 and -0.2 V (SCE), (2) an electrochemical oxidation reaction forming cuprous xanthate between -- 0.2 V and the xanthate/ dixanthogen redox potential, and (3) oxidation to dixanthogen when the potential exceeds the reversible value for the xanthate/dixanthogen couple. The flotation response of bornite closely parallels spectrophotometric and electrochemical evidence for adsorption of KEtX by the reactions listed above. The degree of surface oxidation resulting from the formation of iron oxides on the surface dictates the flotation response as evidenced by the fact that oxidized bornite floats at more anodic potentials than unoxidized bornite. The strong correlations between the flotation response, degree of oxidation, and potential indicate that chemisorbed xanthate produces a hydrophobic layer sufficient to float unoxidized bornite, but cuprous xanthate and dixanthogen arc required to float oxidized bornite.

This paper describes and demonstrates the application of systems analysis and mathematical modeling techniques in the planning of actual tunnel projects and research and development to improve tunneling techniques. A recently completed tunnel project located in Utah is used as an example. Although cost estimating computer programs are used in tunnel project planning, the introduction of performance modeling, simulating the time to excavate, has added advantages that are explored here. The performance/cost tunneling model (TM) described herein mathematically simulates on a high-speed digital computer the important activities of a number of tunneling techniques accounting for activity interactions, variable external environments, mechanical failure, and other uncertainties. A cost accounting segment is included to facilitate cost-effectiveness comparisons. It is shown that, when combined with informed judgment and appreciation of limitations, the TM can be a useful tool that may help improve tunneling operations and cost estimation, for example, by achieving more balanced system designs or bounding the performance/cost implications of geologic and other uncertainties. Ultimately, this might lead to more competitive bids and greater profits. The need for systems analysis and modeling in tunneling research and development (R&D) is well recognized and documented.(1-5) In R&D one must seek broadly useful solutions to the basic problems of face fragmentation, materials handling, ground support, and environmental control. These solutions must take account of the interdependence of these elements and, for a variety of ground conditions, the limitations or constraints that any innovation in one element may impose on total system performance and cost. INTRODUCTION High in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, some 50 airline miles (80 km) northeast of Fresno, and near the John Muir Wilderness and Kings Canyon National Park, a large underground hydroelectric project is under construction. Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) Company's 1,125 MW Helms Pumped Storage Project exhibits a number of impressive statistics, unusual features, and other characteristics of interest to the tunneling or power plant designer and construction contractor. The most significant underground facilities include almost 20,000 ft (6,096 m) of 27-ft (8.2 m) diam concrete-lined pressure tunnel; 3,700 ft (1,128 m) of access tunnel; 1,600 ft (488 m) of steel-lined high-pressure conduit, 2 major underground chambers more than 1,000 ft (305 m) below ground; 3 deep vertical shafts, and one steep inclined shaft. Maximum static pressures within the conduits range from 200 ft (61 m) to 1,744 ft (532 m), with hydraulic transients that increase pressure to 2,500 ft (762 m). The purpose of these underground works is to provide 475,000 hp (354,350 KW) of water power to each of the 3 reversible pump-turbines, each connected to a 375 MW generator motor. The units, rated at 1,744 ft (532 m) maximum static head, are among the world's front-runners, considering the size-head combination. The Helms Project develops the existing power drop between two of PG&E's reservoirs, Courtright Lake and Lake Wishon. These reservoirs are retained by two concrete-faced rockfill dams completed in 1958, each storing approximately 125,000 acre ft (154 x 106 m3) of water. It is said that there is nothing new under the sun and this is certainly true about refractory gold Ores. Ores which have been refractory to treatment have been the bane of the Metallurgist's life ever since gold has been recognized as a metal valued for its indestructability, malleability and beauty. Webster's Dictionary defines "Refractory" as; "Resisting control or authority, stubborn, resistant to treatment or cure, unresponsive to stimuli, difficult to corrode or draw out," And gives as a synonym the word "unruly." I don't think any metallurgist would disagree with these definitions as they quite accurately describe refractory gold ores as we know them and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if many of you in this room today had applied far stonger language to your own refractory ores in the course of your metallurgical test programs. Pliny the elder put it very well when he wrote in 79 A.D., Gold is the first of man's follies, Silver the second." Perhaps Pliny was speaking of "unassayable gold" or "incipient gold." These are truly refrac tory ores which probably existed before Pliny's time and although many people have claimed to have solved their metallurgy the untold wealth that lies within them has never been bankable. On the other hand, Virgil is his Aenead, could very well have been speaking of refractory ores when he wrote; "Quid non mortalia pectora cogis, auri sacra fames!" which translates as, Accursed thirst for gold! What doest thou not compel mortals to do. Certainly, gold was extremely rare at that time because it had to be recovered by much labor from the then refractory ores and their refractoriness caused the early metallurgists (or alchemists if you will) to seek an easier way to produce it; thus the long and fruitless search for the "philosopher 's stone" which would aid in turn-

"In the present work, we investigate the effects of roasting temperature and time on the transformation of the titanium (Ti)-bearing phase and magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4) phase in Ti-bearing electric arc furnace molten slag during the molten sodium hydroxide (NaOH) treatment process. With applied temperature of 700 °C for 60 min, and a mass ratio of Ti-bearing electric arc furnace slag to NaOH, or Rslag/NaOH, of 1:1.2, the conversion ratios of the Ti-bearing phase and the MgAl2O4 phase reached about 98.3 percent and 88.1 percent, respectively. Moreover, investigation of the reaction kinetics indicate that the conversion of these phases during the molten NaOH treatment process is a typical solid-liquid reaction, and it can be theoretically described by the unreacted shrinking core model. The conversion ratio of the Ti-bearing phase was found to be controlled by the chemical reaction step, with an apparent activation energy of 41.76 kJ/mol. The decomposition of the MgAl2O4 phase was found to be controlled by the surface chemical reaction in the early stage of 0 to 20 min from start of reaction, changing to diffusion control in the later stage of 20 to 60 min. The apparent activation energies of the process were determined as 55.88 and 22.72 kJ/mol, respectively.IntroductionChina has rich mineral resources of vanadium–titanium magnetite ore deposits, and the iron and steel industry in the country produces millions of tons of titanium (Ti)-bearing slag every year. The problem of how to dispose of the Ti-bearing slag has attracted much attention, and various approaches have been developed, including the acid process (Li et al., 2007; Zhang et al., 2011; Zhang and Nicol, 2010; Li et al., 2011), alkali fusion process (Han et al., 2012; Middlemas, Fang and Fan, 2013; Nayl, Awwad and Aly, 2009; Lasheen, 2008; Zhang, Qi and Zhang, 2009), carbonization and chlorination process (Liu et al., 2008; Tao et al., 2012; Fu et al., 2012; Liu, 2009), selective crystallization process (Lei and Xue, 2008; Li et al., 2011; Zhang et al., 2007a, 2007b). However, these processes have been beset by various functional, economical and ecological problems (Yu and Chen, 2010). With environmental protection regulations becoming increasingly rigorous, and demand growing for the comprehensive utilization of resources, the focus is on methods to treat Ti-bearing slag with high efficiency and mild reaction conditions (Nazari and Riahi, 2011; Wu et al., 2013)."

The paper gives a short resumé of the findings of the joint US - Swedish "Mechanical Boring (MB) or Drill and Blast Tunneling (DB) ? Workshop" in Stockholm December 1976. New developments and trends in both MB and DB techniques in Europe since 1976 are described, and information is given on some interesting new projects. Differences in contracting principles between the US and Europe lead to different practices for preinvestigations, design, excavation and arbitration and legal affairs. It is shown that this often leads to a higher cost in the US than in Europe for similar excavation jobs. A typical US tunnel job also has more men on the site than a similar job in Europe. This adds to the cost difference and is only partly balanced by a slightly higher rate of excavation in the US. A comparison is made between two quantitative methods of predicting MB penetration rates. These are in reasonable agreement. A probable future development in machine design is an increase in cutter load towards perhaps 25 tons per disc where the tunnel diameter is large enough to house the machine size dictated by the size of the very large electric motors required. Recent European developments in drill and blast technique include improved methods for cautious blasting, precision hydraulic drilling of small diameter holes, and non-electric interval blasting techniques. These developments still keep the drill and blast method ahead of mechanical boring costwise for tunnels in igneous rock whereas for most sedimentary materials mechanical boring has a lead, particularly for long tunnels.

High CO2 fluxes associated with reclaimed coal mine spoils pose an environmental hazard where such sites are used for building. CO2 concentrations in excess of 25% have been reported in homes constructed on or down gradient of such spoils. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a mitigation trench used at one mine site on CO2 fluxes across the trench using chamber?based trace gas measurement. LI8100 automated CO2 flux system was used to measure CO2 fluxes from 32 sample points located across a deep mitigation trench on June 8 and 9. The maximum recorded fluxes were 7.29 and 8.18 µmol/m2/s, with averages of 4.15 and 5.50 µmol/m2/s, up and down-dip respectively. These preliminary results show CO2 flux is higher up-hill than down-hill at 95% significant level. This work shows that flux measurement can be used to investigate CO2 migration on reclaimed mine land. Further work is necessary to allow geostatistical modeling of the spatial variability of CO2 fluxes over reclaimed coal mine spoils. Knowledge gained would assist mining practitioners and regulators in reclamation planning for envisaged post-mining land uses.

Eastern Mesabi taconite is one of the hardest rocks known, but fortunately it shows little tendency to pack in the crushers, when the minus 5/16 inch material is removed. The crushing circuit is essentially as shown in the Engineering and Mining Journal article, "Reserve's New Taconite Project", dated December, 1956 except that the grizzly screen between the two stages of gyratory crushing has been eliminated. The Reserve operating staffs aim is to utilize the crushing equipment in such a manner that the maximum tonnage of taconite can be crushed to the required size at a minimum cost. As is readily apparent, the primary consideration is to produce a desired size product, with the other operating factors to be balanced, thus achieving the best setting for each crusher. Much effort has been expended toward the development of a satisfactory sized material for feeding the rod mills. The characteristics of this feed must allow the following situations to be handled by the existing equipment: 1. The material being fed to the rod mill must be such that it can be fed into the unit with the proper quantity of water to maintain the correct density within the mill. 2. The rod mill must produce a product from this feed which can be handled without difficulty by the magnetic cobbing and ball mill circuit. 3. The incidental tramp must not exceed that quantity which can be handled easily after the rod mill and after the ball mills.

INTRODUCTION For many years, in Europe and in North America, pre-formed metallic and concrete segmental linings in tunnels have been used extensively as temporary and permanent ground support systems. In the United Kingdom the use of cast iron as a means of ground support in mining shafts dates from the first decade of the 19th century. Although at that time wood tubbing was extensively employed, cast iron was used in shafts at Wallsend and Percy Main collieries in the North East of England. The original form of cast iron tubbing consisted of cylinders which were lowered bodily into the pit and were built from the bottom up, but subsequently they were subdivided into segments which involved the making of vertical as well as horizontal joints. Principally, the practice of providing immediate pre-formed support developed because of the incompetent state of the surrounding ground and, although this still remains the over-riding consideration nowadays, several other factors are examined before finally deciding what type of lining to use. Other branches of sub-terranean technology such as tunnel thrusting or immersed tubes (both of which involve pre-formed linings) can provide alternative solutions to problems hitherto thought better solved by bored tunnelling methods. However, this paper will confine itself to those linings developed for the more traditional tunnelling methods. Usually the shape of segmentally lined tunnels is circular because this profile is the most suitable for bad ground and many tunnelling machines. Three years ago, at a reception given during the Steel Institute meeting in New York, I heard the remark, "A new formula must be found for foreign investment." This was immediately following the takeover of U. S. Steel's Matilde operation in Bolivia. Recently, at the World Mining Congress in Lima, Peru, the subject of foreign investment was still a lively topic of conversation. The nationalization of the copper mines in Chile and recent trends in the "Third World" have made all but a few extremely wary of investment anywhere other than in the ?stable? countries. Now, the fallibility of this philosophy has been demonstrated in such "stable" countries as Canada, Australia, and Ireland. Yet, nationalization is not new to us. The events in Chile were classified as disastrous to the affected companies, but so were the effects of nationalization to the majors in Bolivia in 1952. Mexicanization of the mining industry in Mexico was considered impractical by many. Now, those who accepted it are finding it to be workable.

"Sustainable development is an influential ethical concept in modern mining management. However, the concept is not culturally neutral because it is based on Christian, Western values. These values can be very different from traditional values in emerging mining countries like Thailand, where Buddhist values are dominant. When applying the concept of sustainable development, these differences should be taken into account. Different values imply different interpretations of ‘good mining’. They have a significant impact on how mining operations are evaluated, perceived, operated and managed. This paper attempts to integrate Buddhist principles with approaches of the sustainable development concept. When local values are appreciated and maintained, mining companies and their external stakeholders can identify objectives and approaches that match with their own values and contexts. Practices based on this integrated ethic can help to promote sustainable mining and to minimize communication risks for enterprises in mining countries like Thailand. INTRODUCTION The objective of this paper is to integrate Buddhist principles to the application of sustainable development concept to mining activities. The structure of this paper is divided into four parts. An introduction provides basic information about Thailand, its mining industry and the role of Buddhism on the past development. The second part compares the differences between the sustainable mining framework and the implications of Buddhist principles on mining. In the third part, the core Buddhist teachings are integrated into the sustainable mining framework. This is followed by conclusions in the last part. THAILAND, BUDDHISM, AND MINING Thailand is a constitutional monarchy state in Southeastern Asia with a population size of around 65 million [1]. Its GDP in 2013 was 391 billion USD [2], predominantly deriving from manufacturing (38%), trade, transport and communication (24%), agriculture (8%) and mining and construction (4%). Still the largest part of the Thai workforce (39%) is working in the agricultural sector. The remaining part of the workforce is equally distributed across services, manufacturing, and mining and construction sectors. [3]"

"Upon completion, the Bátaapáti deep underground radioactive waste repository complex (National Radioactive Waste Repository - NRWR) will provide safe final disposal for low and medium-level radioactive waste from the Paks Nuclear Power Plant in Hungary. The waste emplacement is in progress and one of the main concerns related to the development is ensuring a feasible plan is in place for permanent repository closure. Detailed hydrogeological observations and safety assessments revealed that the clay filled fault zones penetrated with the access tunnels play determinant role in the long-term confinement performance of NRWR, so they need to be plugged. Detailed mechanical analysis and numerical modelling of the tunnel constructed through a fault zone is presented here to gain a better understanding of the rock mass and rock support behavior. The effect of stress reflection is demonstrated and its consequences are described in detail. A recommendation is given for tunnel support design in such conditions. INTRODUCTION Crossing fault zones is a challenging task during tunnel construction and can lead to failure if not properly accounted for during design and construction. These failures are can be caused by high water inflow or stability loss of the rock mass surrounding of the tunnel (examples can be found in CEDD, 2015). The prediction of the magnitude and development of displacement has a considerable impact on issues during tunnel construction. Changes of rock mass stiffness or structure ahead of the face, to a great extent influencing stresses in the vicinity of the tunnel and thus deformations (Steindorfer, 1998). Further research with numerical simulations was carried out, and the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of displacement vector is presented in (Grossauer et al, 2005). The concern associated with crossing fault zones was considered during the design of the Bátaapáti deep underground radioactive waste repository complex (NRWR) in Hungary. In the case of NRWR project, the fault zones have an impact on maintaining the stability of the surrounding rock mass as well as the final sealing of the repository. As part of the final closure design, a complex numerical modelling program was completed to gain a better understanding of the mechanical behavior of the rock mass and the monitoring observations during construction. Even though the need for the presented study is closely related to the NRWR project, the results can be used in any project related to fault zone crossing. The methodology used to better understand the impact of crossing fault zones for the NRWR project is presented in this paper. First the project background is introduced including an overview of the underground facilities, the aim of the repository, and the construction experience gained from the first crossings of the fault zones. After that the in-situ and laboratory testing is summarized. The numerical modelling methodology is detailed in the next section. Not only the outcome of the model is presented, but the results are compared with the experience and observations made on site. Since a good agreement is found between the actual and the modelled behavior, the conclusions are based on the validated result. To fulfill the aim of the paper, the stress reflection concept is introduced to explain the mechanical behavior of the fault zone and the rock support; furthermore straightforward suggestions are made for rock support design."

With new mineral deposits found in areas of difficult terrain, and annual production capacity increasing in mines over the last decade, the aerial ropeway is proving to be a viable, economic method of transportation from mine to processing plant. Of the more conventional designs, a bicable ropeway is more suited to difficult country than the simpler monocable. The bicable, however, does have limitations in the difference in levels it can accommodate in one section at a given capacity. This is noticeable where hilly terrain and high capacity imposes a limit on the length of each section. Increasing the number of sections for a relatively short conveying distance tends, in the case of conventional bicable, to unbalance the normally favorable economics of the ropeway. In addition to analyzing hauling rope stresses, other areas have to be considered when looking at high capacity ropeways. Bucket capacity, speed, and the wheel load on track ropes are examples. These and other factors led British Ropeway Engineering Co., of Sevenoaks, Kent, UK, to produce the twin-track system. Using twin track ropes, larger capacity buckets, and, if the height differential warrants, the installation of twin hauling ropes, BRECO produced a ropeway design for areas of hilly terrain and at higher capacities than had been considered suitable for aerial ropeways. Designs have been produced for systems handling 1.5 kt/h (1,650 stph), and the potential exists for expansion to above 2 kt/h (2,200 stph). The arrangement of ropes provides high stability of the cars and is especially suited to areas where high winds occur during normal operation. This development allows the aerial ropeway to be applied economically in difficult areas and at the increasingly high capacities demanded by engineers. Ropeway Transports Limestone to Sudan Cement Plant Maspio Cement Corp. of Atbara, Sudan, will soon use an aerial ropeway to deliver its entire limestone requirement 20 km (12 miles) from quarry to plant. The Atbara plant is located north of Khartoum, near the east bank of the Nile River. The quarry is west of the river, in hills rising from flat desert country. The original transport system was a 24-km (15-mile) railway from the quarry to the west bank and a monocable ropeway that crossed the Nile and continued to the fac¬tory, a distance of about 2.5 km (1.5 miles). This original ropeway had a capacity of 60 t/h (66 stph). With the extension of cement-making capacity in the late 1970s, 2.5 kt/d (2,755 stpd) of limestone was required and a new mono-

The Montana Talc ore body was discovered in 1983 in Montana's Gravelly Range, about 40 km (25 miles) south of Ennis. Initial drilling indicated a 910-kt (1-million st) ore body of high purity talc. Preliminary analyses on ore cuttings included chemical analysis, brightness measurements, and microscopic evaluations of the structure of the talc. Results indicated it was similar to talc currently being marketed from Montana and it would probably have good commercial value. Based on the positive test results, a test pit was made and a 180-t (200-st) sample of ore was mined. A portion of the ore was ground to various particle sizes and evaluated to determine its strengths, weaknesses, and other characteristics. The deposit is located close to the Cyprus Yellowstone deposit. It was therefore believed that Montana Talc ore may possess many of the same characteristics. Testing and analyses showed the talc to have a high purity and an extremely large surface area, even for Montanatype tales. The ore was also situated in a massive deposit, indicating low cost mining. While the lab analyses were encouraging, the true evidence would be obtained from commercial tests in the marketplace. About 91 t (100 st) of ore were ground to product specifications for pitch control, paint filler, and plastics filler. Consumers were contacted and requested to evaluate the sample talc products. A major trial for the talc as a pitch control agent was arranged at a Northeast paper mill. The trial indicated the new Montana Talc product performed as well or better than the current standard in the industry. In fact, due to a minor modification in the compaction process to make the transport of the talc easier, the product had substantially less dust than the currently used product. The operating people at the paper mill requested that management purchase this talc. Trials were also run at paint plants for use as a pigment filler. And the talc was fabricated into a number of plastics compounds. The initial product tests were largely positive and provided encouragement to proceed with the project. Different grinding mills were used and their performance evaluated. Significant data were generated by the custom grinders. They indicated how the Montana Talc ore ground and the particle size distributions produced at different grinding settings. Encouraged by the positive marketing tests, a prefeasibility study was commissioned. A talc grinding plant and mine plans were designed and capital and operating costs estimated. Initial economics showed an attractive return. The operating costs were among the lowest in the industry. The positive economics, along with the excellent results by the products in the marketing tests to the paper, paint, and plastics industries, led to the recommendation to proceed with the project. Plant construction began in June of 1985. The Montana Talc Co. (MTC) analyzed the data from the commercial tests. Based on the product's outstanding performance and the uniqueness of its high purity and platy structure, a strategy was developed to position the company as a premium talc supplier.

This paper presents the results of 18 high-G centrifuge tests performed at the Electric Power Research Institute's Coal Cleaning Test Facility in January 1985. These tests, using -28 mesh (0.6mm) froth flotation product, show that the high-G, solid-bowl centrifuge can produce clean-coal moistures of less than 12 percent at solids recovery rates exceeding 98 percent. The high-G centrifuge achieved these low moistures by applying centrifugal forces up to 2,000 times gravity. Because these forces are two to three times the forces used in a screen-bowl centrifuge, the high-G centrifuge can use a solid bowl and still produce a low-moisture product. The solid bowl captures ultrafines that would pass through a screen bowl, and thus obtains higher recovery rates than a screen-bowl centrifuge.

Implementation of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 is negatively affecting production of coal used for generating electric power in Indiana and elsewhere in the Midwest. Required reduction of sulfur compounds from gas streams, or flue gas desulfurization (FGD), as mandated by these laws has encouraged installation of wet limestone scrubbers at many generating plants. Increasingly stringent requirements that will begin in 2000 are expected to necessitate even more extensive use of such scrubbers. Indiana has large deposits of limestone-the major consumable alkaline raw material for scrubbers-that can meet an expected demand of several million tons per year. Limestones are not, however, all the same. Different limestone units behave quite differently when used as scrubbing agents under differing conditions in actual practice. Decisions about FGD scrubber details would be more meaningful if made with thorough knowledge of which rock units contain the most efficient FGD limestones and which sites of suitable stone are located nearest to power plants. Even though abundant carbonate rocks occur in Indiana, their suitability in scrubbing systems has received little attention, and few attempts have been made to match details of stone resources to the needs of various utility scrubbing systems. Optimization of the fit between geologic characteristics of the existing limestones and prospective scrubber systems should allow for greatly improved planning and operation of FGD systems with attendant lower overall costs. Electric utilities have developed computer models to predict FGD system operations (i.e., the FGD-PRISM model of the Electric Power Research Institute). These models require geologic data such as reactivity that are commonly unavailable. We generated data needed for the model during a cooperative effort among the Indiana Department of Commerce, the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS), The Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IP&L), and the Indiana Mineral Aggregates Association. Our goal was to provide missing geologic details of Indiana scrubber-stone raw materials and apply them to the FGD-PRISM model to provide general guidance to determine which geologic units can provide stone for most efficient sulfur removal. Results of the model for selected limestones and parameters specific to one IP&L generating plant were calculated. Geologic data generated may be applied to other generating operations, and our examples should help other utilities optimize their FGD strategies. Several hundred samples from more than 30 active quarries were collected and their physical properties determined. Grindability values ranged from 7.2 to 21.7 for 50 selected samples. Acid-insoluble residues of less than 1% to 13% were found. Dissolution rates as an index of reactivity varied over two orders of magnitude for the selected set of samples. These data plus chemical analyses and Ca/Mg ratios were entered into a generic scrubber model to determine rates of stone use and scrubber efficiency for various stone. Removal of SO2 was projected by this model to range from 89% to 98% with stone utilization rates from 91% to 93%. Excellent scrubber stone sources were found in Mississippian rocks in central and southern Indiana. Rocks of the Ste. Genevieve and Salem Limestones were especially efficient. Even small amounts of dolomite, clay minerals, and quartz diminished a stone's usefulness for FGD scrubbing.

This article offers one of the infrequent looks at Chinese mining. It includes a brief review by Parrish of a tungsten symposium held there and his comments on and impressions of the mines he visited. In early Oct. 1981, a Symposium on the Geology of Tungsten was held in the Peoples Republic of China. There were approximately 100 participants. Half of them were Chinese. The remainder included representatives of the United Nations, geologists from other nations in Southeast Asia, and 10 invited specialists from other countries. The invited guests included K.F.G. Hosking of the Camborne School of Mines, United Kingdom; C.S. Hutchinson of the University of Malaysia; K. Mattson of LKAB Int. AB, Sweden; T. Kwak of Latrobe University, Australia; K. Sato and S. Ishihara of the Geological Survey of Japan; M. Clarke of the Department of Mineral Resources, Indonesia; P. Bateman of the US Geological Survey; and the author. R. Horsnail of Amax was also invited but was unable to attend because of delayed visa clearance. The meeting was noteworthy because the Chinese were presenting more than half the papers. In addition, following the formal session, everyone was taken to the famed Jiangxi tungsten district and toured four mines there. Organization and Background The idea for a symposium on tungsten geology was brought up in late 1979 during a visit to China by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and, in particular, by members of the Regional Mineral Resources Development Centre (RMRDC) of the United Nations. Discussions continued and in the spring of 1981 invitations were sent to selected geologists throughout the world. China's Ministry of Geology handled arrangements, scheduling, and logistics. Travel to China and all correspondence before the symposium were coordinated by the Bandung, Indonesia Bureau of RMRDC. All costs in China were met by the Peoples Republic of China. Airfares and "per diem" enroute for participants were paid by respective governments, sponsors, or individuals. On Oct. 10, visiting participants entered China from Hong Kong. The author and a few others traveled by train to Guangzhou (Canton). Most of the group flew in the next day. The entire group was then taken to Nanchang, traveling by sleeper train and arriving on Oct. 11. The symposium group stayed at the Kiangsi Hotel, where the meetings were held. Meetings Oct. 11 was a day of orientation and rest. The group was taken to an art museum and treated to a Chinese opera movie. The formal meetings began on Monday, Oct. 12. Simultaneous translations aided presentations, though more than half the Chinese speakers delivered their talks in English. The acoustics and sound system were excellent, and the Chinese provided 35-mm and overhead projectors. There was no screen, however, and the yellow, painted wall that was used detracted from projection clarity. In general, the Chinese papers were detailed, thoughtful, and professional. Some, naturally, were stronger than others. Taking them as a unit, one derives the following sequence to the Chinese approach to tungsten exploration: (1) Geologic investigations with mapping at a scale of 1:200,000 accompanied by only minor geochemical or geophysical work. (2) Geophysical investigation with regional gravity and magnetic surveys directed toward identifying deep, tectonic systems and seeking granites in thick, crustal environments. The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. (P&M) is expanding a combination of surface and underground coal mining operation in Northeastern New Mexico. The York Canyon Complex, located 35 miles west of Raton, New Mexico, is aggressively pre-paring for increased production while meeting present requirements. Surface mining activities in four separate mining areas are preparing the complex for additional markets. Drag-line, truck/shovel, highwall miner and contour stripping are surface mining methods currently planned. In addition, P&M will move a Marion 8200 dragline from Kansas to the York Canyon site, finish constructing a $20 million coal preparation plant, and complete conveyor upgrades to the existing underground mine. This paper will describe the diverse York Canyon Complex.

Mining of a bedded barite deposit exposed highly pyritic siliceous sediments which have weathered and degraded subsurface and surface waters. The ph, sulfate, and total dissolved solids are the most seriously affected parameters. Several solutions were tried and eventually horizontal holes were drilled into the mine wall to draw down the water table and decrease the movement of groundwater through oxidizing zones opened up by the mining operation. Areas of surface disturbance were capped with layers of soil, bentonite, and gravel to decrease the infiltration of water into the disturbed areas. These actions have begun to decrease sulfate and total dissolved solids concentrations and increase ph values.
