The Velvet mine is located in the Big Indian district of the Colorado Plateau. The general area, also known as the Lisbon Valley district, is about 65 kilometers southeast of Moab, Utah and about 120 Kilometers southwest of Grand Junction, Colorado. As shown by the slide, the Velvet area is typical of the high desert of the southwest United States. The elevation at the decline collar is 1,967 meters above sea level. To date, the Velvet has produced 1.5 million kilograms of U308 and 2.1 million kilograms of V205. The current production averages over 4,000 metric tons of ore per month. Access to the Velvet mine is by a 1,160 meter long decline. Fresh air is supplied through the decline and a 152 centimeter cased borehole. Contaminated air is removed by two 152 centimeter cased boreholes. Artificial Intelligence research has produced several tools for commercial application. Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic and Expert Systems are some of the techniques that are widely used today. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are excellent predictive, pattern recognition, and data analysis tools. In the mining industry, ANN techniques are being used commercially for real-time process control applications. Modeling of spatial data, ore reserve estimation, tunnel design, longwall stability prediction, and geologic roof classification are additional application areas in which neural networks have been applied successfully. A standard back-propagation algorithm was used to train a series of neural networks for a real-world predictive task. After training and optimizing the neural network architecture, performance of the network is measured on an independent validation set. Results indicate a correlation coefficient of up to 84 % between the actual and predicted values. A neural network model is developed for learning the spatial continuity of a mineral field and, consequently, for predicting sulfur values given coordinate values. The neural network performed not only satisfactorily, but in some cases performed better than the kriging model.

Epithermal gold deposits occur in and near the marginal fault that circumscribes the Goldfield, Nevada, Tertiary caldera. The gold occurs disseminated in alunite, pyrite, and kaolin- bearing silicified zones that are controlled by the circular faults. Other Tertiary calderas (i.e., Summitville and Red Mountain No. 3) have epithermal disseminated gold deposits located in and near their marginal circular faults in settings that resemble the Goldfield example. These additional caldera- controlled epithermal gold deposits are also characterized by alunite, pyrite, and kaolin-bearing silicified rock that act as hosts for the gold disseminations. The Goldfield District is therefore an exploration model for those seeking disseminated epithermal gold deposits in a caldera setting.

Intensive ventilation is required during the excavation of a mine opening and the subsequent exploitation of the mineral resources. The exchange of heat between the ventilation air and the rock mass has a major influence on the thermal regime of a mine, especially in the initial segment of the airway. In frozen ground, heat flow into the rock mass from the ventilation air can result in the eventual thawing of the permafrost, which can result in roof-rock instability. This paper presents a mathematical analysis of the dispersion process of ventilation-induced heat by thermosyphons placed on the surface of the mine. The principal uses of thermosyphons in the Arctic are to reduce the ground temperature to prevent potentially unstable permafrost from thawing and to increase the bearing strength of the material. The mathematical model of the physical problem, generally known as "the Stephan problem," takes into account the varying thermo-physical properties of air and the frozen and thawed rock mass, the thermal properties of the freeing fluid in the thermosyphons and the phase change of water. Finite-difference techniques were employed to determine the temperature isotherms around the thermosyphons. It was found that two rows of thermosyphons on a 10- x 10-m grid provide an acceptable design spacing for reducing the ground temperature around the mine airway.

The emission of methane in the coal mine working faces has two immediate impacts with regard to coal mine planning. Firstly, at the planning stage, the coal mine ventilation system must be designed such that airflows in the faces keep the concentrations of the gas in faces areas to below one percent. If the concentrations were greater than one percent, the production machine has to be shut down resulting in a loss of productive time. In an extreme case, concentration can reach explosibility limits which may lead to ignitions and explosions. Secondly, in excessively gassy coal seams, several alternatives can be applied to the mine layout configuration, and the mining method to be predicted for the extraction of coal, so as to insure a productive and safe operation. In this study a two-phase, two-dimensional finite-difference model was used to predict the methane emission rates into active mine working area under several methane drainage schemes. The numerical model utilizes a recently developed multi-mechanistic flow theory which describes the flow of methane in an heterogeneous and anisotropic coal seam. Transport of methane in the micropore structure of the coal is described by the Fick's law of dif- fusion under the influence of existing concentration gradient, while flow in the more permeable butt and face cleats (macropore spaces) is formulated by Dar- cy's law under the influence of existing pressure gradient. The desorption of the methane is accounted with the aid of a quasi-steady kinetic sorption model. A series of simulation studies were conducted in a systematic manner by sifting through the parameters associated with the coal seam characteristics and the degasification strategies in order to understand those which most significantly affect the methane emission rates in the face areas during mining. Along these lines, the effects of coal seam properties such as thickness, porosity, permeability, sorption characteristics and scheduling of drainage process against the mining operation have been isolated to understand the role of each individual parameter on the methane emission rates.

The use o f cyanide to extract gold from ores is widespread. In the process of extracting gold, cyanide may form metal cyanide complexes with a variety of other metals present in the ore. This study was carried out to investigate the biodegradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex and tetracyanonickelate under varying pH and nutrient additions. Detailed studies using shake flask cultures and bioreactors showed that naturally occurring bacteria residing on gold-leach-pad ore uti¬lized the Cu(I)-cyanide complex (CuCN) and tetracyano-nickelate, Na2(NiCN4), as carbon and/or nitrogen sources. Ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) and/or cyanate (CNO-) accumulated in solution as the metal cyanide complexes were degraded. The accumulation of cyanate as a product is a concern due to its toxicity. Degradation rates were increased if a growth substrate (peptone, 0.1%) was added to the medium or if bioreactors were primed with peptone before addition of the metal-cyanide complex. Tetracyanonickelate was degraded at pH 8 without added peptone, but it was not degraded at pH 10. The addition of peptone was required for degradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex at pH 8 and pH 10. At pH 8, the addition of peptone resulted in the accumulation of cyanate, whereas, at pH 10, cyanate was not detected in the cultures. Biodegradation of metal-cyanide complexes was faster (approximately 1.5 to ten times faster) in bioreactors than in shake flask cultures. The addition of peptone was not required for degradation of metal-cyanide complexes in bioreactors. However, priming the bioreaetor with peptone resulted in higher metal-cyanide degradation rates over multiple cycles.

Peña Colorada is a company dedicated to the exploration, exploitation, and beneficiation of iron ore, serving the national steel industry. Established in 1975 as a stateowned enterprise, it transitioned to operating as a private organization in 1991. It is jointly owned by two investors, ArcelorMittal and Ternium, each holding a 50% stake. The mining operation is situated in the municipality of Minatitlan, in the northwestern part of the state of Colima, Mexico (Figure 1). It comprises an open pit mine and a concentrator, covering an area of approximately 2,300 hectares. The pellet mill is in the town of Manzanillo, Colima state, a port on the Pacific coast, about 46 km southwest of the mine. The pellet mill occupies its own property with a total area of 60.4 hectares. A gravity-driven concentrated slurry pipeline connects the mine and the pelletizing plant, located at an average elevation of 1,020 meters above sea level and 20 meters above sea level, respectively. Currently, Peña Colorada produces 4.1 million tons of pellets and 0.4 million tons of iron concentrate annually. In 2018, due to a change in the cutoff grade, the processing volume of the beneficiation plant increased from 9 million tons to 16 million tons annually. This led to a greater amount of information to process and characterize the ore extracted from the pit before its processing in the beneficiation plant. Consequently, Peña Colorada sought new ore control technologies to enhance ore selection, optimize human resources and data management, as well as minimize discrepancies between planning and execution. To ensure adherence to quality agreements with stakeholders, it is crucial to understand the ore characteristics before initiating mining activities.

Several underground coal mining disasters, such as Upper Big Branch in 2010, have revealed technological and organizational shortcomings related to self-escape. Efforts to address these gaps have primarily been top-down, that is, identified and implemented by upper management or external governing bodies. In contrast, this study employs a novel miner-centered approach to identify perceived technological boundaries to self-escape. Using a semi-structured, scenario-based survey, we elicit direct feedback from miners about current, emerging, and hypothetical technologies aimed at improving self-escape during mine emergencies. The results show a general high usefulness rating across all 21 technologies in the survey. Miners who work underground (both outby and working face miners) appear to give higher usefulness ratings overall than miners on the surface and other locations. This work will be directly applied to a series of proof of concept and prototype studies on self-contained self-rescuers (SCSRs), refuge alternatives (RA), and communication devises aimed at improving self-escape technologies through miner-centered research and design.

For the purpose of examining a specific problem, it is important that we look at the context, to obtain an appreciation of the general area of which the particular problem forms a part. It is my task today to speak on a particular relationship between the nations of Canada and the United States of America. What is the background? Almost two hundred years ago we both belonged to a family of nations -- the British Empire. There was a serious family quarrel in 1776 and the United States left the family and set out to make its own independent way in the world. Canada, which was not as grown up as the united States, remained with the mother country, and in 1812 resisted a vigorous attempt by the United States to get it to leave home too. With the passing of the years the bitterness of that family quarrel has faded and, aside from occasional differences, we have been getting along very well ever since.

INTRODUCTION In a discussion of South American exploration, it is difficult to know how much area to cover, as there has been such intense exploration for many years in all of the South American countries. Therefore, I have decided to discuss only Argentina, Bolivia and Peru in this paper, since I am most familiar with these three countries. This familiarity has been gained during my last 12 years of nearly continual exploration and mine development. Furthermore, these three countries form a contiguous block straddling the Andes Mountain chain for 2,200 miles in length N-S. Although Chile is part of this block, I excluded that country because it has had the longest recent history in South American exploration, and it is now in a mature stage where new important mines are being placed in production every year. Exploration must progress a lot for the other three countries to attain the stature of Chile. However, major exploration successes such as Yavacocha and Pieriva in Peru, Kori Khollu in Bolivia and Bajo Alumbrera, Agua Rica and Cerro Vanguardia in Argentina certainly indicates that these countries are rapidly accelerating in exploration successes and the resulting new mine developments. Also, by concentrating on three countries, I have avoided making this paper too lengthy. This paper will cover activities of both junior and senior mining companies, both of whom are making significant contributions to exploration. The junior companies often make the initial discovery, develop it further and then bring in a major company when large capital is required. Since most exploration is for gold and copper or combinations of these, most descriptions will cover these types. However, there are significant new exploration successes for zinc and for silver-lead-zinc, and they will be covered, as well. After descriptions of the various properties, there is included a discussion of the governmental policies of Argentina, Bolivia and Peru, as to how they are affecting exploration activities and budgets. Some of these problems could have a major negative affect on the future exploration plans of many companies. I have intended to cover what I think are significant exploration developments in each country, and if a company project is omitted, there was no intention to slight anyone. Recent research by the investigators has evaluated the oxidation roasting of refractory gold concentrates in the presence of hydrated lime. (Taylor, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993). These results have indicated that it may be possible to roast concentrates in such a way as to contain nearly all of the sulfur and arsenic in the roaster calcine and that cyanidation may be possible. To further evaluate the behavior of this type of roasting system a laboratory cyclone reactor was built and operated using pyrite and hydrated lime as a .model system. Approximately 50 years ago, the principle of cyclone firing entered practical boiler construction. The appeal of the cyclone configuration was that it afforded the flash combustion process greater efficiency due to turbulence-induced increased mass transfer, heat exchange, and combustion rates.

Soil amendments or soil conditioners generally carry the con- notation of being useful for problem soils or soils needing special treatments to produce maximum yields. Many different materials have been utilized, both inorganic and organic. Only the most commonly used and those that appear to have potential to become commonly used will be discussed. Soil productivity depends on many factors. Soil amendments mainly modify physical characteristics and microbial action, and/or change the pH of a soil, rather than directly supplying plant nutrients. They give soil the needed physical properties to allow plant growth, fight erosion, or save water. Some soil amendments provide nutrients in addition to altering the physical, biological, or chemical characteristics of soil. The term "soil amendment," as it is used by Soil Science Society of America, allows soil amendments to be materials other than those used primarily as fertilizers (Anon.,1987). Soil amendments as fertilizers of any type will not be considered here because this aspect is more relevant to the previous chapter entitled "Agricultural Materials: Fertilizers" in this volume. Several inorganic soil amendments have been used since the early 20th century to alter the character of soil: limestone, lime, and similar calcium-rich carbonates and oxides for acid soils, and calcium sulfate (gypsum) and native or uncombined sulfur for alkaline soils. The use of these amendments (limestone, lime, gypsum, and sulfur) or their equivalents has been studied and documented in many basic soils tests (McCaslin and Boyle, 1980). Perlite and vermiculite are considered in separate chapters and only a brief statement of their use as soil conditioners will be made in this chapter. Peat is the principal natural organic soil amendment, but manure, both as a fertilizer and soil conditioner, is used in every part of the world. In less-developed countries, manure is the primary soil fertilizerlconditioner. An organic-rich material designated as "humate" has been marketed as a soil amendment for many years and will be addressed in this paper. Other materials are discussed by the Soil Science Society of America in its Special Publication 7, "Soil Conditioners" (Stewart, 1975). They include bitumen emulsion, polyacrylamide, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, bentonite, nonionic surfactants, and natural mulches. Zeolites can be added to the list of miscellaneous soil amendments (McCaslin and Boyle, 1980), as can calcium chloride (Pressler and Pelham, 1985), sulfuric acid, ferric and ferrous sulfate, aluminum sulfate, ammonium polysulfide, calcium polysulfide, and ammonium bisulfite (Stromberg and Tisdale, 1979). Sludge will not be considered as a soil amendment because it has properties more consistent with fertilizers. All these "other materials" account for a very small amount of the volume and value of soil amendments used and will be only briefly discussed.

Introduction The successful performance of a mine-wide fire detection system depends upon its ability to detect the presence of a fire rapidly and reliably. It should be sufficiently rapid so that there remains enough time to either safely evacuate a mine or successfully extinguish and control the fire or both. It should be reliable so that false alarms are minimized without sacrificing sensitivity or time response. Systems should also be durable enough to withstand the mine environment over long periods of time while maintaining a high degree of re1iability. Maintenance and calibration of the system should be simp1 e and not require the expenditure of excessive time and manpower to keep it operational. Sensitivity, reliability, and durability of mine fire sensors and their electronic support systems have been the subject of significant Bureau research within recent years. The bulk of this type of information, along with the reports from which the remainder of this paper is derived, can be found in the Bibliography. It suffices to say that there exist commercially available systems for use in mines. This paper addresses a strategy for the use of such sensors and systems. Many factors influence the design of a mine-wide fire detection system, such as the potential sources and modes of ignition, the types of combustibles involved and the quantities avai1able for fire growth and flame spread. Mine air ventilation influences the growth and spread of a fire and also serves to transport the products-of-combustion to other areas of a mine remote from the fire. Fire sensor alarm thresholds place limits on the sizes of fires that can be detected. The time to respond to a detected fire, either in terms of evacuation or control and extinguishment, place additional time constraints on the design of fire detection systems. These factors interact with each other, often in complex ways, and it is the definition and understanding of these factors and their interactions that hold the key to the design of adequate and re1iable fire detection systems. Our level of understanding of the problem has increased dramatically within recent years and it is the intent of this paper to discuss the progress that has been made and how the information can best be used to improve the level of fire detection in underground mines.

After a century of variable government-supplied housing on their cold, windswept lands, and facing extremely limited natural resources and no timber, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has launched a study into alternative housing approaches for their people. Considering that they have little more than the soil and limited river aggregates under their feet, the Tribe has elected to consider adobe and earthen-wall construction. Earthen construction is no stranger to the Sioux lands. Smaller tribes, including the Mandan, Arikira, and Hidatsa, lived here among the Sioux in earthlodges for centuries. Such earthlodge structures were not unlike the Southwestern jacal style-a framework of upright branches and branches covered with mud-employed by the Anasazi about A.D. 700-900. Indeed, the Sioux people themselves evolved from earlier earthlodge dwellers. Indigenous peoples in New Mexico, Arizona, and neighboring Mexico have used earthen-wall housing for many centuries, reinforcing Sioux observations that this is today an earth-friendly, cost-effective, and practical approach. The Cheyenne River and Pine Ridge Sioux Reservations also recently have conducted studies on earthen- wall construction. This paper describes the search for and evaluation of potential raw-material resources for earthen-wall/adobe construction on the Standing Rock Reservation in North and South Dakota. Significant resources of clay/silt materials (8 million tons in the Striped Cloud clay bed) suitable as adobe binders and sand-and-gravel aggregate (2.5 million tons) that could support earthen/adobe construction have been identified throughout the Fort Yates Flat area on the Reservation. Also addressed is how adobe and rammed-earth construction could add to the diversity of reservation construction and address future Tribal housing and other building needs.

The title of this paper implies the presence of silver, nickel, and cobalt minerals at, the Alhambra mine. Perhaps this should be amplified to include uranium, as pitchblende also occurs, possibly in mineable quantifies. A brief history of the Alhambra mine is of interest, both from a historical angle and as pointing up the importance of geology in the-present development. The Alhambra is one of several mines in the Bullards Peak or Black Hawk dis¬trict, ass it is more familiarly known, in southwestern. New Mexico, which was mined for silver in the 1880?s and 18901s, Silver valued between $500,000 and $1,000,000 was extracted from the mine in the 10 years prior to 1893, when operations ceased. Almost all the silver mined was native silver, although a small quantity of argentite was produced. Nickel and cobalt were recognized in the ores, but they were thought to be of no consequence.

11.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter outlines some of the selection and design considerations for leach pads and liners. Leach pads and liners are generally chosen to provide the required or desired levels of low permeability and foundation conditions at minimum cost. The selection and design of a particular liner depends upon its anticipated use and performance, and what materials may be available. A leach pad is the firm base for a heap. When geomembrane liners are used, the pad is the firm, compacted foundation upon which the liner is placed. In the case of a clay liner, the clay liner is usually also the pad. It is important to consider the design of a pad or liner in terms of a system. The "leach pad system" consists of the prepared foundation, bedding layer (if used), liner (s), seepage collection or detection layer (if used), and cover layer. Foundation preparation is necessary to ensure a stable base for the rest of the leach pad system. A bedding layer is used to protect a liner from being punctured by large angular fragments in the foundation material. A seepage collection or detection layer, consisting of well-drained material and (sometimes) pipes draining to a collection sump, is included when a double liner is used. A cover layer on top of the liner can serve the following purposes (van Zyl and Strachan, 1986): • Preventing of ultraviolet light exposure to sensitive geomembranes; • Limiting evaporation from compacted clay liners and thereby eliminating cracking of such liners; • More efficient collecting of leachate; and • Protecting the liner from damage during heap construction. Economic evaluations of alternative liners for a project must include the overall system. For example, a geomembrane liner may require different foundation preparation and cover material selection and placement than a clay liner. Liners can be made of compacted clay onsite, amended soil, or geomembranes. The Sandvik Group (Sandvik AB), headquartered in Sandviken, Sweden, continues to expand its worldwide operations growth. After recent acquisitions, including Tamrock, headquartered in Tampere, Finland, the company now has annual sales of more than US$5 billion (SEK 40 billion). With the acquisition of Tamrock, Sandvik has further increased its interests in the mining industry. Sandvik Rock Tools, a familiar name in the mining industry, is one of the world's leading suppliers of rock-drilling tools. And Tamrock is one of the world's leading suppliers of drilling machinery, loaders and equipment for rock-excavation operations. Sandvik believes that the two companies combined offer customers "maximum productivity through total system solutions, including machinery, service and tools." In 1997, Tamrock posted sales of US$940 million (SEK 7.5 billion). In addition to its expertise in drilling tools and equipment, Sandvik is supported by its collective resources in specialty steel and cemented carbide. These resources include extensive research and development capabilities, with annual investments in R&D now at about US$150 million. As a result of the R&D programs, internal expansion and acquisitions, the company has nearly doubled in size during the past four years. From 1994 to 1997, nearly US$1 billion was invested in internal growth and another US$825 million has gone towards acquisitions. Return on net assets is now 22% annually. In addition to Tamrock, acquisitions of interest to the mining community include Drillmaster Inc., Houston, TX. The acquisition of Drillmaster (by Sandvik Rock Tools) has further strengthened Sandvik's position in down-the-hole drilling tools. Other major recent acquisitions by Sandvik include Kanthal, a Swedish manu¬facturer of metal and ceramic-resistant materials for electric heating furnaces, household appliances and elec¬tronics, and Precision Twist Drill, Crystal Lake, IL, one of the leading producers of high-speed cutting tools. With more than 38,000 employees worldwide, the Sandvik Group is divided into six separate business areas. Each area is responsible for its own R&D, production and sales: ? Sandvik Mining and Construction. Including Tamrock and Sandvik Rock Tools, this business area boasts of offering the most comprehensive range of "rock-working" products. These include drilling rigs, loaders, rock-excavation equipment and rock drilling tools. ? Sandvik Specialty Steel. This area includes Sandvik Steel and Kanthal, manufacturers of stainless steel tube, strip wire and bar, as well as high-alloy steel and specialty metals. ? Sandvik Tooling. This business area consists of tools and tooling for metalworking applications. Escanaba, Michigan, is located on the South¬ern shore of the Upper Peninsula on a sheltered area of Lake Michigan called Little Bay de Noquet. The Chicago and North Western Transportation Company has operated a rail-to-ship ore transfer facility at this location for well over 100-years. It is the only terminal of its type on Take Michigan and thus can offer a longer navigation season to lower lake markets than other upper lake ports. It all started in 1864 when the Peninsula Railroad of Michigan, now a part of the C&NW, completed a 100 km rail line from Little Bay de Noquet to the Jackson Mines at Negnauee, Michigan. During that first year of operation approximately 31 000t of ore were loaded onto ships at Escanaba from what was then called the Merchants Dock. By 1871 demand had already exceeded capacity and it was necessary to build a larger dock, which in turn was replaced with a still larger pocket dock in 1903. There are no plans or records available to indicate how the ore was handled from rail to ship prior to the construction of the pocket dock.

This paper presents a history of a successful three year effort in locating a large, economic deposit of high purity limestone. The exploration program has been carried out by Ernest K. Lehmann & Associates, Inc., geological consultants, for Dravo Corporation, owner of the limestone property which is now under development. The permission of Mr. L. P. Struble, Jr, President of Dravo Lime Company, and Mr. M. W. Robinson, Director of Research and Development, to present this paper is gratefully acknowledged. The limestone property is on the Ohio River near Maysville in northern Kentucky, 60 miles east of Cincinnati (Fig. 1). The area lies at the eastern flank of the Cincinnati Arch, a regional structure where the Lower Paleozoic strata crop out below the adjacent younger sedimentary rocks of the Illinois and Apallachian basins. In general, the limestone formations of the Middle Ordovician High Bridge group offer the best potential for industrial limestone in Kentucky and adjacent parts of Ohio and Indiana. These formations are exposed along the axis of the Cincinnati Arch in central Kentucky. Toward the west, east and north, strata of the High Bridge group are progressively deeper, concealed beneath a succession of interbedded fossiliferous limestone and shale. The High Bridge group limestone formations are shallow-marine deposits largely of tidal flat, shallow lagoon and related environments. Principal lithologies include cryptocrystalline micritic limestone and crystalline dolomitic limestone to dolomite. Shale and bioclastic limestone are subordinate but the proportion of shale increases in the basal formations. Characteristic, is the occurrence of several thin beds of bentonite that serve as regional stratigraphic key horizons.

The subject of this paper is mineral processing chemicals - how they work and where they end up environmentally. First of all, it is necessary to recognize that water is the most universally and widely used chemical used by the mining industry to separate desirable minerals from unwanted wastes, sands, and slimes. Of the total world's water supply, over 97 percent is found in the oceans. Another two percent is tied up in the ice caps, leaving roughly only one percent for us to work with. This one percent is distributed either as ground or surface water and makes up the bulk of all water used industrially. Even with such a small proportion available for immediate use, there appears to be enough fresh water to meet our needs for at least another hundred years. This availability, however, depends heavily on how we handle our waste waters, how we process them, and how we plan for their reuse. Certain governmental agencies have been charged with the task of setting up standards of water quality which must be met prior to environmental discharge. There is even discussion of zero discharge from industrial operations. Due to limited supply and availability, the mining industry has always been forced to reuse its process water or to treat it prior to discharge. Consequently, we are in an enviable position and are presently able to live with the environmentalists demands. To stay on top of the situation, it is necessary to continually concern ourselves with the .effects of changing orebodies and reagents on the final mill effluent. From a process standpoint, it is also important to recognize the impurities of plant recycle water and how they might tend to influence overall operations
