 This research project explored the viability of a new mining technology — thermal fragmentation — in narrow-vein mining. Thermal fragmentation technology uses a flame jet to produce extreme heat that spalls the surrounding rock to a strategically located drill hole, as an alternative to traditional blasting. This paper creates a net present value (NPV) model of a mining method using thermal fragmentation as well as one of an existing method used for narrow-vein mining. Comparisons and evaluations were made regarding the feasibility of the new technology. It was found that while overall costs for thermal fragmentation were relatively high, reductions in wages, haulage and processing costs as well as increased productivity and ore recovery meant that the new method would improve the financial performance of any operation.

Garnet is the general name for a family of complex silicate minerals having similar physical properties and crystallizing in the isometric (cubic) system. All garnets have the same general chemical formula but vary greatly in chemical composition. The name garnet is derived from the Latin word granatus, meaning like a grain, which refers to the mode of occurrence wherein crystals resemble grains or seeds embedded in the matrix. GEOLOGY Mineralogy Chemical Properties: The general formula for garnet is A3B2(SiO4)3, whereas A can be calcium, magnesium, ferrous iron, or manganese, and B can be aluminum. ferric iron, or chromium, or rarely titanium. The formulas and names of common garnet species are: [ ] Almandite and almandite-pyrope solid solution garnets are the best abrasive types, but andradite, grossularite, and pyrope also are used. All species of garnet have been used as gemstones. The structure of garnet consists essentially of isolated SiO, tetrahedra connected by oxygen-cation-oxygen bonds through the distinct A and B group cation sites. Within this structure magnesium, ferrous iron, and manganese easily interchange and substitute for each other in the A cation position, and calcium does so less readily. Additionally, aluminum, femc iron, and chromium substitute for each other to a limited extent in the B cation position. This ability to substitute or exchange ions without changing the crystal structure is called isomorphism, and garnet is one of the finest examples of a isomorphous series. Because of this isomorphism there is complete solid solution between certain garnet species but not between others. Fig. 1 illustrates these solid solution relationships. Some rare species of garnet are known that illustrate the wide range of cation substitution that the garnet crystal structure can accommodate. They include: [ ] These rare species are not of interest for industrial applications, but can be of interest to mineralogists and the gem industry. Physical Properties: Garnet displays the greatest variety of color of any industrial mineral. Garnets have been found in all colors except blue. For example, grossularite can be colorless, white, gray, yellow, yellowish green, various shades of green, brown, pink, reddish, or black. Andradite garnet can be yellow- green, green, greenish brown, orangy yellow, brown, grayish black or black. Pyrope is commonly purplish red, pinkish red, orangy red, crimson, or dark red; and almandite is deep red, brownish red, brownish black or violet-red. Spessartite garnet can be red, reddish orange, orange, yellow-brown, reddish brown, or blackish brown. A few garnets exhibit a color-change phenomenon. They are one color when viewed in natural light and another color when viewed in incandescent light. Because of the great variation in color of garnet within each species and similarities in color between garnets of different species it is recommended that garnet identification not be based on color alone. The Mohs hardness of garnet varies from 6.5 to 9.0. Grossularite and uvarovite have a hardness of 6.5 to 7.5; andradite is 6.5 to 7.0; and pyrope, almandite, and spessartite are 7.0 to 7.5 in hardness. There are reports of almandite having a hardness of between 8.0 and 9.0. As with hardness, the specific gravity of garnet varies considerably. The specific gravity may be as low as 3.2 or as high as 4.3 depending on chemical composition. Garnet crystallizes in the isometric system with rhombic dodecahedra and trapezohedra the most common forms. Crystals also form in combinations of dodecahedra and trapezohedra or either of these in combination with hexoctahedra. Crystals can have cubic or octahedral faces, but these are rare. Under favorable conditions of formation garnet will crystalize in nearly perfect forms that rival study models. Garnet also forms as irregular blebs, grains, knots, or masses, with or without distinguishable crystal faces, and as coarse- or fine-grained granular masses that appear to be totally lacking in crystal form. The fracture of garnet also shows great variation. In some garnets, particularly those that are well crystallized and glassy in appearance, the fracture is subconchoidal to conchoidal. Other, more poorly crystallized garnets exhibit a fracture that can only be described as uneven. Garnet occasionally has an indistinct dodecahedral cleavage. Certain species of garnet from specific locations have a pronounced laminated structure consisting of planes of weakness along which parting takes place. This parting may resemble cleavage, but since it is mechanical and not related to crystal structure it is not true cleavage. The optical properties of garnet are sensitive to even small changes in chemical composition or strain in the crystal structure. For this reason each species does not have a single index of re- fraction (IR) but has a range of 1Rs. Uvarovite in its pure form should have an IR of 1.870, but in nature samples vary from 1.74

A mobile-modular carbon adsorption mill design and operation for small to medium sized heap leach precious metal mines is presented. In the mobile-modular strategy, charcoal columns with adsorbed metal move from small strategically located carbon adsorption loading stations to a central stripping facility and back. The design has many advantages: 1) It scales-up from pilot plant to full production. 2) It has low capital requirements. 3) Operational costs are competitive with other systems. 4) Mill production can react quickly to changes in ore grade or property area. 5) The solution circuits are simple and easy to maintain. 6) Charcoal damage is reduced.

Before specifications are discussed it may be well to define the term "Mineral Aggregates." Professor K. B. Woods (1) defined "Mineral Aggregate--An aggregation of sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag, or other material of mineral composition used in combination with a binding medium to form bituminous and portland cement concrete, macadam, mastic, mortar, plaster, etc., or alone as in railroad ballast, filter beds, and various manufacturing processes, such as fluxing, etc. " This definition is too all inclusive for the purposes of this paper; therefore, this discussion will be confined to specifications for natural aggregates which means sand and gravel and crushed stone, and limited primarily to coarse aggregate which is aggregate larger than one-quarter inch in size. To the uninitiated, this may seem to be a very limited subject on an unimportant material. However, aggregates are essential in all types of construction. Modern ash handling systems exist in considerable numbers and a great deal of design and operating experience has been accumulated, It is the endeavor of this paper to point to a number of frequently recurring problems, A general appreciation of these problems will be helpful in both design and operation of systems. The light fly ash and the heavy bottom ash present different problems, and each will therefore be treated separately. Fly ash is collected in the ducting from the furnace to the stack and beneath the mechanical and electrostatic dust collectors. The greatest amount of dust is collected beneath the mechanicals and electrostatics. Hoppers are generally provided as integral parts of the collector. Suitable valves and piping are connected to these hoppers for removal of the dust. The size and shape of these hoppers are important factors in determining frequency of handling and the capacity of the system.

Despite two large projects represented in the keynote docket, the mood of the 2011 SME Arizona Conference was summed up best by Ferol Baker, general manager of New Mexico Copper Corp. (a wholly owned subsidiary of Themac Resources Group), ?In the past, it seemed like you couldn?t go to a conference like this without hearing about one big new greenfield project after another. Now what you see is companies doing internal expansion or small-scale brownfield development.? Overall, the tone of this year?s meeting, held at the J.W. Marriott Resort at Starr Pass in Tucson, AZ, was upbeat, yet practical. From the keynote and luncheon addresses to the six panels of sessions, the projects described were positive about the future, yet focused on the details required to make those projects come to fruition.

Many modern industries rely on rare earth elements (REEs) to produce products that are essential to both civil and defense applications. In a prior study (Vass et al., 2019), we showed that REE grades in acid mine drainage (AMD) and associated byproduct precipitates from AMD treatment (AMDp) warrant evaluation as a feedstock for REE production. The current work extends that effort through a broad survey of 141 AMD treatment sites in Northern and Central Appalachia. In this study, 185 raw AMD and 623 AMDp field samples were obtained and analyzed to assess the REE and major metal concentrations. Results show that an average of 282 μg/L and 724 g/t of REEs occur in AMD and AMDp, respectively. Additionally, both basins contained similar distributions of REEs, and these distributions tended to favor heavy and critical REEs when compared with traditional REE ore deposits.

ERIC GUTIERREZ, Knowledgescape: Our next speaker is Randy Ynchausti. He's the director of development, Knowledgescape systems division, of EIMCO Process Equip- ment Company. The title of Randy's talk is "An Expert Control System for Phosphate Beneficiation." RANDY YNCHAUSTI: System integration. How does the systems integrator survive when caught between plant engineers, plant management, and third-party engineering firms, and stay within the budget of the corporate goals? I'm not sure that anyone knows how to do all of that on one project. Results are critical when we talk about how systems integrators work with operating people, how the operating people want systems integrators to work with them, and how both groups work together so that at the end of a project, you have been provided with solutions that meet your needs and solve your problems at a fair price. How does the integrator's role change when working with different types of professionals, such as plant managers, plant engineers, engineering firms, or other system integrators? Finally, what is the dynamics of people working with machines and providing services and solving needs? The average number of employees per pound of copper processed has decreased significantly during the past 15 years. I would dare to generalize and say that the average number of employees per whatever unit of measure we have in whatever industry we work in has decreased over the last 15 years. From a system integrator's perspective, there are some clients who lack a bit of internal expertise as corporate downsizing occurs, and that's one reason why we go out to system integrators or third-party vendors and buy things from them to solve our problems. Downsizing really amounts to savings, but more than that, I think Brian expressed this and I agree with him, it also amounts to a cost. Unfortunately, most of us count the savings and none of us count the cost in that approach. It's easy to count the savings, which is one reason why we count it so quickly. Maybe that also accounts for why we set our pencils down so quickly after we get that dollar value. Maybe we should pick that pencil up every once in awhile and refigure the expense, the cost to us, and determine what we're going to pay during the next year or two or three in losing that expense, or that staff. Nature of Empirical Calculations The size reduction of large tonnages of ore and rock is an operation of great magnitude. It is a necessary and important part of industry. Its development has been motivated by practical need and has followed the path of an industrial art without much help from theoretical science. Knowledge has been accumulated from experience. Trial and error established the methods; then collected data were tabulated and served as the basis for empirical equations that have been continually modi¬fied and amplified as new data became available. These equations now constitute the bulk of our present knowledge of comminution. There is no accepted scientific theory that is basic to comminution. In electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering, as well as in many other industrial activities, such theories exist and are extremely help¬ful, but rock is essentially heterogeneous, and the zones of weakness that control its breakage are thoroughly diversified. No theory has yet been discovered which can account for the variability of rock, although many attempts have been made. Empirical equations tell nothing of the why of a phenomenon, but if they are properly derived they can tell much about the how. They always represent only an approximation of behavior but never a law. In a proper empirical equation a symbol is assigned for each of the variable quantities that obviously affect the relationship. In a grinding mill these include mill diameter, mill speed, and feed rate among them. In setting up and revising an empirical equation the cardinal princi¬ple in establishing and modifying it is this: any change must be strictly ascribed to the variable which caused it. A useful empirical equation is rendered useless when a change in any convenient coefficient or exponent is made to make it fit a particular set of data, without certainty that the altered coefficient or exponent is the responsible variable in the new data. Such indiscriminate revisions have brought the use of empirical equations into some disrepute. When existing equations are changed to accommodate new data it is a good rule to make a change which gives results intermediate between the new and the old. A halfway point is usually a good choice.

INTRODUCTION In the coal industry, ever greater amounts of fine coal must be processed due to the need to crush to finer sizes for impurity liberation in low cost physical cleaning processes. Fine coal processing is a major problem for the industry, both through the cost of disposal of reject fines and through the mining cost of lost coal values. Of the available disposal methods, impoundment has always been the most popular. In many cases, when the coal fines were of sufficient quality, froth flotation and expensive filtration methods were used to recover the coal in these waste streams. The coal fines are not always of a marketable quality, however, and flotation, due to poor yields and difficult dewatering, has always been an expensive and not necessarily profitable process. The oil agglomeration method is increasingly important as a technology for the treatment of fine coal-in-water suspensions. These fines can be preferentially wetted and agglomerated by many different oils mixed with the suspensions. Ash-forming impurities remain in suspension and are rejected when the agglomerates are recovered, for example, by screening. Agglomeration-based methods provide perhaps the only practical means for upgrading extremely fine coal to useful products on a large scale. As with froth flotation, oil agglomeration relies on differences in the surface properties of coal and impurities to effect separation. Whereas flotation be- comes less effective with particles finer than 200 mesh (0.075 mm) or coarser than 50 mesh (0.3 mm), there appears to be no lower limit on particle size for oil agglomeration while particles % in. (3.175 mm) diameter or larger can also be treated, if desirable. In addition to this ability to clean a broader size range of coal particles, oil agglomeration can produce a dense, coarse granular product of acceptable strength and low water content without the need for vacuum or thermal drying. The preferential wetting of solid surfaces by immiscible liquids has been utilized, if not fully understood, for a long time. Indeed Gaudin,229 in tracing the ancestry of froth flotation, refers to a 15th century oil-pulp kneading procedure in which water-wetted particles were freed under water from an oiled mass. The industrial grinding process has undergone changes to better address the market and economic needs. Fine grinding of dry materials has developed to the point where classifying linings and fine ball charges improve mill efficiencies. Roller mills as well have wide acceptance due to their power efficiencies. The mill, by its nature, cannot provide the specific particle size or range of sizes which are required for further processing or final use. Therefore, various separators are operated in conjunction with the mill to control particle size. The sizing device helps minimize over grinding and control top size. Rising energy costs combined with increasingly tighter quality specifications have led to increasing study of the grinding and separation process.

Attrition milling, once employed exclusively for the dispersion of pigments, has in recent years found a host of new applications in the area of mineral processing and mineral-pigment production. Broadly categorized, attrition milling is divided into two classes, as defined by the machinery's function, vibratory milling and rotational milling. Each mill type has been defined as a variation on ball milling and the terms, "vibratory ball mill" and stirred ball mill" appear in the literature. The primary design differences between attrition and ball mills are: (1) a stationary canister (or shell) (2) smaller grinding media (3) grinder energy is motor limited rather than gravity limited (4) strong media/feed size dependance.

This United States Bureau of Mines study is based on a review of U.S. mine fire accidents that occurred from 1970 through 1989. Information on these accidents was obtained through investigative reports written by Mine Safety and Health Administration personnel. For this study, 260 mine fire accident reports were examined. A previous Bureau research effort established that fires causing fatalities were more likely to occur in haulage entries than at any other underground location. This study has found that the most prolific source of haulage entry fires was the inadvertent grounding of trolley wires. The largest segment (15 out of 40 trolley wire fires) resulted from not maintaining adequate clearance between the trolley wire and the vehicle. Several novel fire prevention and control ideas have evolved in response to frequently occurring fire-related problems. These included; discriminating power isolation devices, wire cutting devices, more accessible fire extinguishers, vehicle overcurrent protection, and vehicle fire suppression.

"Within the framework of the European project NeTTUN, the Laboratory of Civil Engineering and Building Sciences of ENTPE in Lyon (France) is in charge of a large experimental campaign to investigate the impact of tunneling on neighbouring piled structures. For this study, an original reduced-scale (around 1:10) physical model of EPBS is used. This ""1g"" laboratory model is able to reproduce the main features of the excavation method. For this new experimental program, the miniature EPBS advances inside a large tank filled with a model soil (dry sand), in which instrumented piles were pre-installed. In this paper, the authors describe briefly the original 3D device and present results concerning the impact of tunneling on a single pile located above the tunnel. Different tunneling face pressure are studied in connection with the practice. Machine parameters, pile solicitations and stress-strain behavior of the soil mass monitored under real time conditions are discussed. INTRODUCTION When tunnels are constructed in urban areas, they often come close to pre-existing structures, such as pile foundations. Perturbations of tunnel construction on these neighbouring structures must be considered during design and construction of the tunnel. Ground movements due to tunnelling may induce bending moments, lateral and vertical loads, settlements and lateral deflections in the piles, which may lead to structural damage or failure of the piles or the supported structure. The interaction between piles and a tunnel in construction is a complex three dimensional problem. To date, several experimental approaches have been carried out to analyse the effects of tunnelling on piled foundations (Bezuijen et al., 1994, Loganathan et al., 2000, Jacobsz et al. 2004, Lee and Basset, 2006, Marshall and Mair, 2011, ). These different studies carried out in the laboratory on 1 g or centrifuged models aim at a better understanding of tunnel - piles interaction and a quantification of the influence of each dominating parameter on the structural responses. Parameters like foundation type (single pile, group of piles) and geometry, relative tunnel – pile position, volume loss induced by tunnelling, ground characteristics, pile loading history were considered. However, most of these experiments were carried out under plane strain conditions by modelling the volume loss due to tunnel excavation by decreasing the tunnel diameter or the radial support pressure. As a result, these models do not adequately account for the variations of settlements both in the longitudinal and the transverse direction, which can induce significant flexional and torsional effects on the structures. These effects are particularly critical and detrimental in the case of historical monuments."

Barrick Goldstrike Inc.'s Betze/Post Open Pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A. (see location Map, Figure 1). About ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County. The final Betze/Post Pit configuration is shown in Figure 2, Pit Configuration. The final pit will be about 2450m long by 1550m wide, elongate in a west-northwesterly direction. The pit straddles the Barrick/Newmont property boundary. The highest elevation of the pit perimeter is 1800m at the south wall, with the east end pit bottom elevation at 1200m.

Estimating productivity of a walking dragline is of paramount concern to mining engineers and mine planners. Risk based evaluation of the dragline productivity is a valuable tool to estimate the dragline?s long-term performances and availabilities, to develop preventive maintenance plans, and to make future projections about the machine?s performance. This paper aims to provide mining professionals with an overview of risk assessment methodology for productivity of two walking draglines, PAGE 736 and MARION 7820, which have been operating in Tunçbilek open cast coal mine of Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKI) in Turkey. The study encompasses three main stages as: (i) acquiring of monthly maintenance records, operating hours, mechanical and electrical failure hours between 1998 and 2009; (ii) reliability modeling using mean time between failure data; (iii) determining hazard rate and consequences to compute risk associated with dragline productivity. The results showed that that Page 736 (20 yd3) is seemed to be more reliable and less likely to fail when compared with Marion 7820 (40 yd3). The operating hours without failure range from 41 to 51 hours with 50 percent reliability.

This study used artificial neural networks (ANNs) coupled with Gaussian mixture modeling (GMM) to analyze truck haulage data from openpit mines. The proposed weighted ensemble models performed better than benchmark models in predicting truck productivity, providing a new means of solving complex data and improving mine planning and decision-making.

This chapter describes the nature and occurrence of the principal clay minerals that are used as ceramic raw materials, explains how these raw materials are used to produce finished goods, and summarizes positive and negative trends that will affect future demand for raw materials and products in the ceramic industry. The term ceramics was derived from the ancient Greek keramikos (a clay jar). A ceramic product is a material that has been fired to at least 468.3°C (Mitchell, 1983). In addition to being one of our earliest manufacturing and construction materials, ceramic products are among the earliest records of civilization. The enduring significance of ceramics is shown by the fact that, even today, the manufacture of whitewares, brick and related red-fired wares, refractories, and engineered ceramics continues to be a major sector of the US economy. A wide range of materials can be made into ceramic products, although relatively few earth materials make up most of the ceramics in today's markets (Table 1). Most ceramic products are made from clay or a related material. The long history of clay use in the ceramics industry stems from its variable and sometimes unique physical and chemical properties, as well as its ubiquitous occurrence and relatively low cost. Clay is important to ceramics because of its plasticity, moldability and filterability, chemical content, color. refractoriness, solubility. corrosion resistance, electrical properties, and other properties that result from the essentially two dimensional morphology of the individual clay mineral platelets. Because of their basic relationships to the chemical and physical properties of clays, the chemical and mineralogical content have been the subject of continuous studies over the past few decades. Advances in knowledge about the chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties of clays are responsible for most of the advances in processing. The need to remove off-colored contaminants, minerals with low melting points, and soluble salts has resulted in beneficiation by wet processing methods such as water washing. Water washing is restricted to kaolins, although low cost methods of water washing have been extended more recently to ball clays in Europe. High intensity magnetic filtration and flotation technologies have noticeably improved the quality of kaolins and broadly expanded their use in the ceramics industry. In addition to products for construction (e.g., brick, tile, sewer pipe, field drain pipe, cement, fiberglass, roof granules, and paint) and manufacturing (e.g., refractories, kiln furniture, sanitary ware, pottery, and dinnerware), clays are used in calcined form as ceramic fillers, carriers, extenders, and grogs. Ceramics suppliers are under economic pressure in several of these product areas. Manufacture of refractories in America has declined as steel production has decreased. INTRODUCTION The process of solid-liquid separation can be an important decision in plant design. It is very important that one must consider not only the most effective means of solids-liquid separation, but also to consider the effects on upstream and downstream processes. A solid-liquid separation is done either to remove the solids £ran the liquids as in copper concentrates or rave a liquid from the solids as in uranium operations. In either case, washing can be an important consideration to clean the solids or recover the liquids. This section will deal with solid- liquid separation other than thermal, sedimntation processes, or hydro cyclones. The three major areas discussed are pressure filters, vacuum filters, and centrifuges that are most cannon in the minerals industry. PRESSURE FILTERS Pressure filters are one common type of solid-liquid dewatering devices. There are my different types of pressure filters that are both continuous and batch operations. They are characterized by using an external pressure to push or force the slurry through porous media to force the liquids out of the solids. Whereas vacuum filters are limited to one amsphere or bar working pressure, some types of pressure filters operate as high as 16 bars pressure. Pressure filters are also effective for hot slurries where a high boiling point can be a problem or precipitation occurs under vacuum. The types of pressure filters most common in the mineral processing industry include plate and frame and recessed plate filters. Some of the new technologies including automatic pres- sure filters and belt presses are also discussed. Plate Frame Filters Plate and frame filters are one of the oldest and most effective means of both dewatering solids and clarifying liquids. Plate and frame filters consist of a skeleton that is used to hang or support alternate plates and frames that are pressed together to form chambers.
