The application of cutoffs during and after pit optimization is examined for a lower-grade multi-metallic copper deposit. Pit optimization requires calculation of the net revenue associated with each mining block, incorporating parameters such as metal prices, grades and expected recoveries, mining and processing costs, smelting and refining charges, and penalty element and royalty charges. Sensitivity analysis during pit optimization reveals which of these parameters have a significant effect on the total contained resource tonnage and total contained non-discounted revenue in the optimized pit. The cumulative effect of changing several of the more significant parameters is investigated. Application of a copper cutoff grade to a block inside the optimized pit could result in the less than optimal extraction of the resource. A block with copper grade below the applied cutoff could be economic due to the presence of other metals. Conversely, a higher copper grade block may be sub-economic. The relative merits of applying a copper grade cutoff, "equivalent grade" cutoff and dollar value per ton cutoff to blocks inside the optimum pit are discussed.

INTRODUCTION Semiautogenous (SAG) grinding technology first started to be seriously considered for comminution circuit design in the mid-1960s as an alternative to the three-stage crushing circuits and rod-ball mill circuits in vogue at the time. Since this time the application of SAG mill technology has become widespread with over 250 mills larger than 20 feet in diameter sold (Jones 2002). The vast majority of concentrators constructed over the past quarter century have utilized SAG mill technology, and a SAG-based comminution-based circuit is generally the first choice considered for new projects. Since the first generation of SAG milling technology was applied, many lessons have been learned, and new supporting technologies have emerged which make the design, installation and operation of SAG &-based grinding circuits more robust and efficient. This paper will discuss the current status of SAG and associated technologies. MILL MECHANICAL DESIGN ISSUES Table 1 summarizes the manner in which SAG design capability has evolved over the past 30 years. Increases in mill diameter came slowly as the industry took a wait-and-see attitude as the technology of larger mill diameters was advanced. The first 32-foot- diameter mill was ordered in 1969. It was not until 1979 that the technology jumped to the 34-foot-diameter mill and 1988 for the first 36-foot-diameter mill. The first 38- and 40-foot-diameter mills were both ordered in 1996. At least five 38-foot-diameter and two 40-foot-diameter mills will be in operation by mid-2004. Advances in structural analytical techniques and increased computational power, coupled with field measurements of large operating mills, have increased the confidence of the mill suppliers in their designs and the operating companies in the viability of larger diameter mills. In this paper, the authors present a typical mine profitability model. The method of generating system moments is used to examine the sensitivity of the profitability function to changes in the dependent variables, and to express the expected risk associated with undertaking the project in a predicted economic and technical environment. Profitability of a mining venture is a function of many variables ore grade, capital and operating costs, milling efficiency, ore reserve tonnage and annual tonnage, equity - loan structure, tax regime, etc. Estimates of the expected value and the variance of the profitability function are obtained by calculating the partial derivatives of the function with respect to the dependent variables, using the Taylor series expansion method to the second order. Sensitivity analysis is carried out by examining the effects of each variable on the profitability function, which is determined by the magnitude of the product of its partial derivative and variance. An appropriate probability density function, based on the expected value and the variance of the profitability function, is assumed to estimate the expected risk associated with the project. This expected risk is a measure of the area under the profitability density function below the appropriate, selected discount rate or the cut-off net present value (NPV). The results are compared with those obtained by using the Monte Carlo simulation technique, and they show that either of the two methods could be used to evaluate the probability of project failure or success with no significant difference.

Attempts have been made during the last three decades to establish a correlation between respirable dust dosage and the degree of progression of pneumoconiosis or silicosis amongst mine workers. Fair correlation has been possible only after the Johannesburg Pneumoconiosis Conference established mass concentration of dust in the respirable size range as the true measure of the incidence of pneumoconiosis. The author had established a good correlation between cumulative total respirable dust dosage as well as cumulative silica dosage and the category of pneumoconiosis according to ILO classification at Mufulira Copper Mine. Studies at Hutti also show a linear relationship between the average cumulative dust and silica dosage md the category of pneumoconiosis. However the maximum tolerable cumulative dust dosage for - prolonged exposure is 182 mg month/m3 - at Hutti as compared to 275 mg month/m3 at Mufulira. Similarly the maximum tolerable silica dosage for - prolonged exposure is Only 35 mg month/m3 at Hutti as compared to 55 mg month/m3 at Mufulira. The TLV for dust concentration at Hutti works out at 0.6 mg/m3 compared to 1.1 mg/m3 at Mufulira and the TLV of silica concentration at Hutti is 0.117 mg/m3 compared to 0.25 mg/m3 at Mufulira. The Hutti figure is however, closer to the TLV of 0.1 mg/m 3 recommended by ACGIH.

A process for the separation and recovery of cobalt and nickel was optimized for a sulfate leach solution of Indian Ocean sea nodules containing 80 g/m3 cobalt and 730 g/m3 nickel using the sodium salt of Cyanex 272 as the extractant. Extraction of both cobalt and nickel increased with an increase in equilibrium pH and extractant concentration. The extracted species with respect to cobalt appears to be CoA2.3HA. More than 99.6% extraction of cobalt was achieved using 0.04M solvent in a three-stage counter current simulation at the A:O phase ratio of 3:2. The co-extraction of nickel was about 0.6% only. Two-stage countercurrent stripping of cobalt from the loaded organic at an A:O ratio of 1: 7 resulted in a pregnant electrolyte enriched by 0.8 kg/m3, thus enabling a ten times overall enrichment of cobalt. From the cobalt free raffinate, nickel extraction was carried out using 0.25M solvent in two countercurrent stages, and the extraction showed a 99.8% recovery. Stripping of nickel from the loaded solvent was carried out at an equal phase ratio with the advance electrolyte of pH 1.75 in two countercurrent stages. The nickel stripping efficiency was found to be 98.8%. The present studies indicated that complete recovery of cobalt and nickel was possible using nine counter-current stages.

Lithium requirements in the next few decades for batteries and controlled thermonuclear fusion reactors (CTR) may exceed the availability of the current mineral and brine reserves. It is thus prudent to search for new reserves and resources to satisfy these and future lithium applications. The lithium content of the waters from the Smackover oil field. located in the Gulf Coast region of the United States, ranges from 100 to 500 mp/l and could represent a substantial new reserve. Experimental evidence described in the literature indicates that a specific chelating agent dipivaloylmethane (DPM), of the diketone type, has a specific selectivity toward lithium in the presence of other metal ions in aqueous solutions. Based in part on this unique property of dipivaloylmethane, a conceptual design of a full-size plant to extract lithium from the Smackover brine is presented in this paper. This study includes alternate flow-sheet development, design information on the major units of the process, energy requirements, and an economic analysis of a facility capable of producing 106 kg of lithium per year. The economics of three different process concepts depend primarily on the amount of water needing to be evaporated from the initial oil-field feed waters in concentrating the brine. The results, as a function of production rates, are indicated only in a general manner.

"?irovski Vrh" Uranium deposit in Slovenia is type of mineralized sediments in ore bearing belts of deflected S-structure, in which the belt is less than 25% mineralized. Ore bodies of irregular small thickness, unreliably contoured, made difficult estimation of correct contours, which are necessary for design and exploitation works. The deposit was explored by vertical boreholes made at the surface and by boreholes fanned from drives. For the purpose of application of this estimation method, 1 m composites have been made in slices which were parallel to the referential belt plane. Estimation was made for 1,5m x 1,5m x lm blocks which do correspond to the size of the containers in the ore transport stage. Two variables have been used: the first, indicator of function (ore=1, waste material =0) and kriging method; the second, logarithmical content of Uranium and Minimum Mean Square Error Estimation (MMSEE) method. Based on estimated values of those variables, probability of ore quantity as well as Uranium content over determined cut-off were calculated for each block. Those two parameters enable determination of the most probable form of the ore body in ecah one metter slice. Estimation of sixteen small blocks in a large 1,5m x 1,5m x 1m block made possible estimation of ore quantity and its content for the determined cut-off, as well as categorization of exploration. This method is being used for estimation of ore reserves and planning of exploration operations. The described' methodology was tested in an exploitation block.

This gravity circuit at Les Mines Camchib Inc. consists of two pinched sluices to bleed a feed to one of two 76 cm (30") Knelson concentrator. The Knelson concentrate is upgraded to smeltable grade with a smaller Knelson (18130 cm) and a riffleless table. Their tails are column cyanided and washed prior to recycle to the grinding circuit. This paper details size- by-size circuit performance. The Knelsons recover around 90% of free gold (as determined by Mozley Laboratory Separator), even below 37 pm. The sluices are ineffective, with upgrading ratios around 2, but approaching unity in the fine sizes. Much of the effectiveness of the circuit lies in the high gold circulating loads in the grinding circuit, which partly atone for the poor sluice performance, and the ability of the Knelsons to recover free gold. Secondary upgrading recovers slightly above 99% of the primary concentrate gold, 90% of it in a 65% Au concentrate and the balance in a heavily loaded (10 to 20 oz/st) pregnant solution, generated by intensive column cyanidation.

Introduction Metallurgical accounting practices have been revolutionized over the past 15 years by the introduction of low cost personal computers and easy- to-use spreadsheet software. The Chimney Creek metallurgical accounting system takes full advantage of these advances. Data is provided by a PLC-based process control system, IBM data logging, operator logsheets and assay results from an automatatic plant sampling system. The data is organized and stored in an IBM PS/2 system using Lotus 123 and customized accounting programs to provide a comprehensive information management system. Metallurgical accounting for gold plants should ideally provide information for the following: a) Gold production accounting b) Day-to-day process control and operation c) Metallurgical evaluation and process optimization The Chimney Creek system provides all of these while overcoming specific accounting problems presented by SAG milling a coarse feed, grinding in cyanide and dump leaching run-of-mine material. Process description Gold Fields' Chimney Creek mine is located 47 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada, at the northern end of the Osgood Mountains. Ore is processed by a combination of dump leaching and milling processes. The dump leach operation treats approximately 2.0 million tons per year of low grade ore (0.030 oz/ton). Run-of-mine ore is top dumped in 40 foot high pads. The use of three solution ponds for leaching enables an intermediate solution to be recirculated to the leach pad to reduce the pregnant solution flowrate and increase gold tenor of solution to the carbon-in-column (CIC) recovery circuit. Gold recovery is approximately 65% by this method. The milling process employs a SAG mill-ball mill grinding circuit to treat 900,000 tons per year at an average grade of 0.19 oz/ton. The ore is crushed to minus 12" in a jaw crusher prior to feeding the SAG mill. Cyanide is added to the grinding circuit to start gold dissolution as early as possible. After grinding, leaching of the ore is continued in a unique two-stage counter current decantation circuit 1 with 12 hours of leaching between stages . 85% of the soluble gold is recovered from the first stage thickener overflow in carbon columns (CIC). The second stage underflow is treated in a scavenger carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant. Ultimate gold recovery is over 95%. Loaded carbon from both the dump leaching and milling processes is pressure stripped by hot cyanide solution and gold is recovered from the resulting solution by zinc precipitation. The precipitate is retorted for mercury removal and smelted into bullion. The plant flowsheet appears in Figure 1. Data collection Data for daily metallurgical accounting is obtained from three sources: a) Plant sampling b) Process control system c) Operator logsheets All of the data collection for metallurgical accounting is based around the 12-hour shift operating schedule. Sampling All critical sampling for gold production accounting is performed by automatic samplers (Figure 2). Heath & Sherwood two-stage sampling systems are used for sampling all slurry streams (cyclone overflow, CIP feed and CIP tails). The automatic sampler consists of a pneumatically operated primary sample cutter and a continuous rotary secondary splitter. The cyclone overflow and CIP tails are the most critical samples since these are used to calculate gold into and out of the plant on a shiftly basis. The sequence of events preceeding the discovery of the Mount Emmons molybdenite include some inadvertent near misses by several groups. The events are given in general chronological order to bring out the essentially contemporaneous, but different activities by several groups in two areas on opposite sides of Mount Emmons. The Mount Emmons molybdenite deposit lies in the Elk Mountain mining district. The west edge of the deposit is near the boundary between the Elk Mountain and Ruby mining districts as shown by the USGS map included (see Fig. 1). Considerable history regarding the Keystone silver-lead-zinc mine is given because of its proximity to the Mount Emmons molybdenite deposit which is on the other side of the mountain from Redwell Basin and where other significant activities took place. It should be noted that there was no documentary evidence available to me that would indicate that molybdenite was recognized to be present on, or under, any part of Mount Emmons, including Redwell Basin, before 1970. Veins containing silver-lead-zinc minerals were discovered in the Elk Mountain and Ruby mining districts about 1872. Some discoveries on the south flank of Mount Emmons about 1880 were developed into the Keystone mine. The Keystone has the largest cumulative production of metal ores of any of the mines in these districts. Most of the 413 Mt (455,473 st) of ore produced from the Keystone mine through August 1967 was produced after 1950. The ore averaged 175.4 gt (5.64 oz per ton) Ag, 2.62% Pb, 5.56% Zn, and 0.72% Cu.

Rock thermophysical properties, i.e. heat conductivity and thermal diffusivity, were obtained for reference values at the Waldo Test Mine for mine fire simulation purposes. An in situ measurement method was chosen since it could include the effect of rock fractures. The REKA method (Rapid Evaluation of k and alpha) was used because it can measure conductivity (k) and diffusivity (alpha) simultaneously within an eight-hour measurement period. A total of six measurements were taken in three different holes, and at two different depths from the collar of the hole. Each measurement provided an averaged conductivity and diffusivity for a volume of rock of approximately one cubic meter. The boreholes were driven into the upper and lower limestone, two at right angles to and one parallel to, the stratification of the rock. Significant representative conductivity and diffusivity values were obtained for the whole mine by averaging the six measurement results. The thermal properties for the band of shale in between the two limestones were not measured in situ, but only in the laboratory. Problems were encountered in the evaluation because of unexpected heat conduction on one side of the symmetrically built probe. A modification was made to the previously developed evaluation method together with further testing and correction, before the final results were obtained. As expected, the in situ and lab- oratory measured values of k and alpha compared favorably, since the in situ rock was dry and relatively unstressed.

The distribution pattern, abundance variations and types of polymetallic nodules and associated megabenthic communities in area covers more than 60 000 km2 laid out in the eastern Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) is presented. Our observations are based on data from 158 boxcore stations collected during the cruise of the Interoceanmetal (IOM) in 2004 on board of RV Yuzhmorgeologiya. Although those polymetallic nodules for two decades been subject to prospecting and exploration studies carried out by IOM, the knowledge of megabenthic communities and their distribution pattern within nodule field was extremely limited. With purpose to evaluate the relationship between polymetallic nodules and associated benthic megafauna, an comparison analyze was carried out in respect to their composition, types, abundance across the studied area owing into account the local particular feature of bottom topography. It is suggested that the nodule-bearing seafloor supported more diverse fauna (higher number of morphotypes) than the nodule-free areas. Moreover, based on correlation between types of nodules and associated faunal morphotypes frequency the apparent relationship is considered. The most abundant megafaunal taxa (between 68 ? 92%) is essentially associated with the occurrence of the diagenetically growth nodules type (D-type and its D1-subtype); the role of the H and HD nodule-types was variable. In respect to the bottom topography, the highest diversity in the structure of megafaunal communities was recorded in the gently undulating plains and on the horst slopes, thus the highest nodule abundance occur on the topographic slopes.

Mining-induced coal dust causes various respiratory diseases to mine workers, such as coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP). Current available underground monitors are expensive, heavy and only measure mass concentration. These disadvantages limit them for regulatory sample monitoring purposes only while personal exposure levels for most miners remain unknown, risking miners to potential overexposures. Low-cost light scattering PM sensors offer a potential solution to this problem with capability of high spatio-temporal resolution PM characterization. However, these sensors require careful calibration before they can be applied in mining environments. There is basically no comprehensive study in the literature using a standard protocol assessing these sensors for coal dust monitoring. With the aim of calibrating the PMS5003 sensors for coal dust monitoring, we design the calibration method and system to calibrate these low-cost PM sensors coal dust monitoring. Working principles of present coal dust monitor and low-cost sensors are presented in detail. The linear regression calibration model which is used for the sensor calibration is further described. Sensor calibration and evaluation protocols are comprehensively compared and discussed. This investigation reveals the feasibility of low-cost sensors for real-time personal coal dust monitoring in underground coal mines.

A PC image-based, on-line coarse particle size analysis system is being developed for the control of crushing and grinding circuits. Initial results had indicated that the system is accurate when tested with irregularly shaped particles which are stationary and do not overlap with each other. Now the system has been successfully tested in the dynamic mode with a moving belt conveyor. On-line size analysis for actual plant operations is discussed and includes: (1) the video system with respect to lighting and data acquisition requirements for a rapidly moving belt and, (2) image sampling, specifically the number of observations needed for accurate sampling and the total time required to perform the calculations for a representative data set.

This paper describes a two-part program funded by the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research and performed by Jacobs. The first part of the program was to examine the application of ultrasonic treatment to clean phosphate particle surfaces. Florida phosphate pebble and rougher flotation feeds were treated in an ultrasonic trough to remove clays. Also, the de-oiling of rougher concentrates by ultrasonic treatment was tested. In order to improve the clay removal efficiency, viscosities of primary cyclone overflow from six beneficiation plants were studied in the second part of the program. Viscosities for different samples at the same clay % solids vary significantly, and increase exponentially with clay % solids content for the same sample. A method of controlling cyclone operation using on-line viscosity measurements and pump box level sensors is proposed to logically improve primary cyclone performance.

Three different refractory carbonaceous gold ores from the Carlin operation in northeastern Nevada were investigated to characterize the effect of passivation treatments on the nature of the carbonaceous material. The carbonaceous material was chemically isolated from the ores and passivated residues, and examined by FTIR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and gold adsorption capacity. The main component of the carbonaceous material in these ores was found to be a naturally occurring activated carbon-type compound. Hydro-carbons were detected on rare occasions, but no evidence was seen for humic acids. Ore samples were passivated by autoclaving, or by treatment with sodium hypochlorite or gaseous chlorine. In some of the passivation tests, a new peak was observed in the IR spectra of the isolated carbonaceous material, that was due to carbonyl functionalities. However, all of the passivation treatments tested decreased preg robbing significantly. This suggested that the appearance of the carbonyl peak was due to the severity of the conditions during passivation, rather than the method used.

At its Technical Development Center in Tucson, Arizona, the UOP Mineral Sciences Division operates a completely integrated pilot plant testing a proprietary process for the extraction of nickel from limonite/saprolite ores. The process is based on the reductive roast- ammonia leach procedure now employed in several plants around the world. The process improvements are such that nickel extractions well above that experienced in these processes are possible, particularly on the more garnieritic/saprolitic ores. This paper will describe the process and the results of process development studies. The data show that pilot plant results confirm those obtained on the smaller laboratory and bench scales of experimentation.

The Zabirah bauxite is a Cretaceous paleolaterite exposed by postTertiary uplift and erosion of the Phanerozoic sequence. The laterite profile, which is preserved in situ, occupies a prominent angular unconformity over a sequence of sandstones, siltstones and mudstones ranging from Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous in age, and is overlain by a Late Cretaceous terrigenous and carbonate package. The profile is known to be preserved over an area of 250 sq km and at depths below the present surface of up to 80 m. The bauxite layer is hard, compact and predominantly pisolitic, with a variety of subordinate, superimposed textures resulting from post-formation alteration. The bauxite minerals are boehmite and gibbsite. Boehmite generally predominates, and the boehmite:gibbsite ratio averages 2:1, with a marked tendency for the proportion of boehmite to increase down the profile. Kaolinite, a major constituent of the profile, is concentrated in two zones, one above and one below the pisolitic bauxite layer. Iron content is variable and bears a direct relationship to parent-rock lithology. Genesis and preservation of the bauxite are due to the favourable coincidence of a number of geological controls of which the most significant are the local structural and sedimentary regimes, the lithology and chemistry of the parent rocks, and the Cretaceous paleogeography of the region.

It is often alleged by mine ventilation engineers that no reliable method exists to forecast the levels of radiation to be encountered in future uranium mines. It results that the design of uranium mine ventilation systems is based on factors other than radiological hazards, such as radon and radon daughter concentrations, for which permissible limits are set. Ventilation has been used to date as the main control mechanism for radon and radon daughters. Although it has become increasingly difficult to provide enough ventilating air to reduce the radon gas and its daughter products to safe levels in some mining arrangements, it is not the object of this paper to discuss alternatives to ventilation. This paper will describe a methodology followed by the authors over the years to estimate the levels of radiation to be encountered in underground and open pit uranium mines. Ventilating air is used to maintain working level concentrations within safe limits. The sources of radon and radon daughters and the quantities of each which will be produced, will be of great value in planning and designing a ventilation system to control them. This information can afterwards be integrated into the overall mine design. The methodology to be outlined can also be used to estimate, given a mine design format, the radiation levels to be encountered. If levels are not acceptable, modifications in the mine design can be made at an early stage. The emphasis is placed on an integrated effort where the ventilation engineers and the mine design engineers work in close collaboration from the very start of the mining project. Estimation of radon and radon daughter levels can be initiated as soon as core samples are obtained from the exploration programmes.

When prospectors discovered mineralized outcrops in Pine Creek Canyon in 1916, little did they know the site was destined to become one of the world's greatest tungsten mines. Located outside Bishop in California's rugged Sierra Nevada mountain range, the mine's development imposed unique challenges to the hardiest of mining men. In its early years, the Pine Creek operation was plagued by bad luck and poor timing. But through the perseverance of a dynamic group of mining personalities, it would gain world class status. Pine Creek tungsten supplied much of the defense needs of the United States during World War II and put the Bishop area on the map as a major contributor to the nation's stockpile of strategic metals. The mine's history was shaped by world politics, the ups and downs of metals demand and economic survival through technological innovations. In contrast to many mines, Pine Creek's workings went horizontally into and then up inside the mountains - nearly to the ridgetops. This resulted in the name "Mine in the Sky" being attached to the operation. The origin of Pine Creek's ore bodies is related to the emplacement of a portion of the Sierra Nevada batholith about 100 million years ago. During the intrusive process, granitic magmas engulfed overlying calcareous sedimentary rocks, flooding them with silica-rich hydrothermal fluids and metamorphosing them to skarn. The fluids also contained tungsten, molybdenum and copper. They precipitated as scheelite, molybdenite and chalcopyrite, respectively, during the metamorphic process. The ore-bearing skarns occur as near-vertical tabular pendants in the intrusive rocks. These were later exposed by the uplift of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and glacial erosion.
