The purpose of this paper is to present the benefits of high reactivity meta kaolin (HRM) in high performance cement-based systems. HRM, unlike other pozzolans, is manufactured from selected naturally occurring kaolin ore and carefully processed under stringent conditions to result in a consistent product with highly pozzolanic properties. HRM is an ultrafine pozzolan that enhances the mechanical properties (workability and strength) and chemical stability (durability) of Portland cement concrete and cement-based products. HRM is unique with respect to its white color which makes it an ideal choice for architectural applications where visual and aesthetic concerns are critical.

Flotation plant simulation, a relatively recent methodology in mineral processing, is defined and corresponding uses are discussed. Typical simulation structures are compared. Current problem areas exist although these are not insurmountable. Following a brief state of the art discussion, the N. I. M. simulation program is reviewed. In general, digital plant simulation is expected to be of substantial benefit in the near future.

Chelatang agents, because of their metal specificity, can function as effective mineral processing reagents. A brief review of the work carried out in this area is presented. Some of the salient features of mineral flotation and flocculation with chehting-type reagents, such as bulk us. surface chelation, the role of pH, mineral solubility, solution chemistry of reagents, and temperature, are illustrated with appropriate examples. The problems associated with the commercialization of chelating reagents for ore beneficiation and the research efforts required in this area are also discussed.

The term bentonite was first proposed in 1898 by Knight, a year after he had named this clay taylorite, because taylorite had been previously used for another mineral. The name taylorite was after the Taylor ranch, the site of the first mine, near Rock River, WY, and the name bentonite is from the Benton Shale in which the clay was thought at that time to occur. The Benton Shale was, in turn, named after Fort Benton, MT, located more than 640 km miles north of Rock River. Early in the 20th century, several geologists recognized that bentonite, mainly in beds in Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks, originated from transported volcanic materials. This recognition led to definitions based on origin, the one most widely quoted and generally accepted by geologists is the following definition by Ross and Shannon (1926): "Bentonite is a rock composed essentially of a crystalline clay-like mineral formed by devitrification and the accompanying chemical alteration of a glassy igneous material, usually a tuff or volcanic ash; and it often contains variable proportions of accessory crystal grains that were originally phenocrysts in the volcanic glass. These are feldspar (commonly orthoclase and oligoclase), biotite, quartz, pyroxenes, zircon, and various other minerals typical of volcanic rocks. The characteristic clay-like mineral has a micaceous habit and facile cleavage, high birefringence and a texture inherited from volcanic tuff or ash, and it is usually the mineral montmorillonite, but less often beidellite." The difficulty in applying the foregoing definition to bentonite as an industrial mineral commodity is that it is based on origin and is restricted to an ash, tuff, or volcanic glass parent material. Therefore, deposits consisting of the clay minerals required by this definition, but having uncertain origin or parent materials, cannot properly be called bentonite. Furthermore, many deposits in the western United States and in other countries that have formed from rocks other than the types required by the definition are being mined and sold as bentonite. Perhaps the best definition of bentonite as an industrial mineral is one given by R.E. Grim in a plenary lecture at the International Clay Conference (AIPEA) at Madrid, Spain, June 27, 1972. According to this redefinition, which will be used in this chapter, bentonite is a clay consisting essentially of smectite minerals (montmorillonite group of some usages), regardless of origin or occurrence. This definition solves the problem of the difference between the geologic and industrial usages of the term and overcomes the difficulty in assigning a name to smectite clay that formed from igneous rock other than ash, tuff, or glass, or those of sedimentary or uncertain origin. However, bentonite, when used with this meaning is still a rock term (consisting of more than one mineral), and it will not be possible to distinguish it from fuller's earth in many instances. One way of classifying bentonite is based on its swelling capacities when wet or added to water. Bentonite having sodium (Na+) as either the dominant or as an abundant exchangeable ion typically has very high swelling capacities and forms gel-like masses when added to water. Bentonite in which exchangeable calcium (Ca++) is more abundant than other ions has much lower swelling capacities than sodium varieties. Some calcium types swell little more than common clay, and most crumble into granular masses in water. Intermediate calcium-sodium bentonites, the so called mixed types, tend to swell moderately and to form gels of lesser volumes than equal masses of the sodium type bentonite. Because of the general relationship of swelling and exchangeable ion characteristics bentonite is commonly divided into the high swelling or sodium, low swelling or calcium, and moderate swelling or intermediate types. The term sub-bentonite (Davis et a]., 1940) is used inconsistently in industry for the low or moderate swelling varieties. The authors believe the use of this term should be discouraged because of its implication of low quality or low value and the lack of a mineralogical or use basis for it. In the United States bentonite is also classified by geographic location and the uses for which it is sold. Inasmuch as most of the low swelling calcium type occurs in states bordering the Gulf of Mexico, this variety is commonly called Southern bentonite. The largest high swelling sodium bentonite deposits and the major producing districts are in Wyoming and adjacent states. Therefore, this bentonite is commonly called the Wyoming or Western type. Such terms as drilling mud bentonite, foundry bond bentonite, and taconite bond bentonite relating directly to use are applied in marketing. Other terms including high and low yield bentonite, high and low gel bentonite, and high and low strength bentonite are also used to distinguish different grades. The varied classifications notwithstanding, bentonite occurs in so many different varieties that some cannot logically be classified according to any of the foregoing groupings. One of these types is hectorite, which is a high swelling lithium-bearing variety of smectite occurring mainly in California and adjacent states. It is, therefore, not a Wyoming type, and it occurs even farther west than the so called western bentonites. Others are bentonites having magnesium (Mg++) or hydrogen (H+) as the most abundant or dominant exchangeable ion. These types are neither sodium nor calcium varieties, and apparently some are low swelling, whereas others have rather high swelling capacities. The petrographic composition of sized coal produced through the progressive grinding of a Central Appalachian high-volatile bituminous coal blend was analyzed for multiple sets either by removing fine, -200-mesh, coal after each test iteration or by retaining the fine coal in progressive test fractions. With prolonged grinding, coarser fractions tend to become depleted in vitrinite and vitrinite-rich microl ithotypes, leading to progressively harder-to-grind coal remaining in the oversize, +200-mesh, fractions. The latter trend is shown both by the maceral and microlithotype composition of the coal and by the increased slope and fractal dimension of size frequency distribution, implying an increase in hardness and resistance to grinding of the oversize coal.

Lateritic gold has been the object of study only for a very few years, though nuggets have been mentioned in earlier works even as early as 1984 by Hartt in Brazil. In Mato Grosso State, lateritisation is intense, as is common in all tropical forest areas of the world. Exploration has revealed the presence of recoverable "nugget gold" of variable sizes (30 - 200 gms) but frequently of good size (0 - 40 gms), especially near Cuiaba and Alta Floresta regions. In both of them the host system is a lateritised breccia indicative of a fault or shear zone breccia, though in different lithological domains. The Cuiaba occurrences are phyllitic and show a profile as follows, from top to bottom: 1) Compact ferralite crust. 2) Oolitic to pisolitic compact crust (+ some gold). 3) Mottled concretionary laterite crust. 4) Lateritised "eluvial material" (gold nuggets). 5) Mottled patchy to banded laterite. 6) Banded lateritised phyllite with lenticular to banded goethite. 7) Altered red goethitic phyllite, with quartz veins (+ fine gold). 8) Unaltered grey phyllite with quartz veins (Protore). The Alta Floresta-Juruena River occurrences are volcano-sedimentary and show a profile as follows: 1) Deep brown siltitic, argillaceous and arenaceous material with organic matter (+ gold). 2) Modular and concretionary laterite, compact and indurated, with arsenophyrite in quartz fragments (gold nuggets). 3) Band with silty-clayey matrix and arenaceous in nature. 4) Bedrock meta-arcosian arenite. 5) Volcano-sedimentary with rhyodacites and andesitic basalts, with intercalations of arkosic and greywacke nature. Breccias and quartz veins, and granites associated in different portions (Protore).

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated column bioleaching as a means of recovering manganese from a domestic low-grade oxide ore. Manganese was solubilized from the ore using indigenous heterotrophic microorganisms and molasses as the nutrient source. The effects of medium flow rate, molasses concentration, and frequency of medium replacement on the rate of manganese extraction were examined. Results showed that flow rates between 0.4 and 8.1 L/min/m2 had little impact on manganese extraction, while an increase in the total amount of molasses applied during leaching directly affected the extent and rate of manganese extraction. Manganese extractions of more than 90% were achieved in 12 weeks of bioleaching in column tests using 500 g charges of ore. Sugar utilization by the microorganisms and formation of organic acid metabolites were monitored by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Two methods were evaluated to recover manganese from the sugar- depleted bioleaching medium: (1) adsorption onto weak cation exchange resin, followed by stripping and precipitation techniques; and (2) direct precipitation of the manganese as MnCO, using ammonium carbonate. Both recovery methods removed at least 95% of the solubilized manganese from the medium as a carbonate salt. The stripped molasses medium was replenished with fresh molasses and recycled back through the bioleach column, successfully leaching more manganese.

SYSTEM ENGINEERING Years ago, while attending Harvard's Advanced Management Program, Professor Robert Hayes introduced our class to the, then not-so-familiar, concept of systems engineering. First assignment-dinner at The Benihana of Tokyo Restaurant! Delighted, but a bit mystified with the assignment; we had dinner at Benihana. Back in class, Professor Hayes inquired about the assignment and persuaded us; that Rocky Aoki's business formula for Benihana was not necessarily Japanese cuisine, but rather the systematic way in which he moves more people-if you will, processes more people through his restaurants than his competition, by systematically linking all restaurant functions. For instance, the bar is a holding area in which patrons ideally wait no more, or no less, than 20 minutes. When seated, your table, which accommodates eight, is filled with eight even if you are a party of two. The Japanese chef is also the entertainment, and when, at the end, he cleans the grill, you are being subtly prompted that dinner is over. The bill accompanies ice cream, systematically delivered shortly thereafter. You are expected to pay promptly and depart, as there are eight more, mostly unacquainted, people who have waited 20 minutes in the bar, and who are assembled ready to be seated at your table. For me-this was electrifying. I understood the concept, concluded it was very powerful and felt prepared to conquer whatever, by means of its application. That was years ago and I can safely say I have yet to fully realize on the euphoria of that moment. Why? Well, I simply conclude: • The concept of systems engineering is simple and not revolutionary, but The application of systems engineering is far from simple and is revolutionary.

Off-highway tire costs represent a significant portion of the total mining costs in openpit, truck-shovel operations. To extend the lives of tires, the site-specific factors influencing tire life should be investigated Valuable data can be obtained by combining historical operational data captured by a mine dispatch system with detailed tire and maintenance histories. Assuming that failure counts satisfy a Poisson distribution, F-tests can be applied to determine significant deviations from desired or target counts. The methodology developed in this paper can be used to identify the haul routes and loading and dumping zones that have significantly higher incidences of tire failure. Corrective action can then be targeted at these zones by modifying the shovel or truck operator practices; changing the haul route maintenance and clean up practices; or altering the bench, ramp or waste dump design parameters. An example is given of the correlation of tire separation and tire impact failures with haul routes for a fleet of nine Caterpillar 793C trucks in operation at the Chuquicamata Mine in northern Chile. A high incidence of impact failures was observed for the ex pit ore crusher and for tires installed in the left outer rear position on the trucks. The latter was postulated to be due to a preference for drivers to execute right-hand turns prior to dumping. Recommendations were made to revise crusher and dump cleanup practices and investigate the feasibility of super-elevating the surface of dumping zones to reduce ground pressure on the left rear tires.

The Red River is located within the Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range in northern New Mexico. An approximate 12-mile segment of the river from the town of Red River to the village of Questa (Questa) includes several hydrothermal alteration zones. Alteration ?scars? formed as a result of rapid chemical weathering and physical erosion of pyrite-rich hydrothermally altered rocks. Storm water runoff from the scar drainages contributes metal-laden, acidic water to the river and creates a visible plume of discolored water in the river. Acidic runoff reduces the river pH from 7 to the mid 3s for at least 2 hours during large storms and the low pH water continues downstream. Runoff from scar drainages increases some metal concentrations in the river from below chronic ecological criteria to as much as two orders of magnitude greater than acute ecological criteria, and results in acutely toxic conditions for macro-invertebrates. A general improvement in the river?s water quality occurs downstream due to dilution from tributary inflow from non-mineralized watersheds, the natural buffering capacity of the river, and storm water controls at the Chevron Mining Inc. There is a critical need for effective instructional materials at the university level and for an upgrading of mine safety and health in the mining engineering curriculum. A fundamental approach to mine safety and health is recast into the familiar 3 E's: engineering, education, and enforcement, in that order. Each is briefly reviewed and their interdependence emphasized. A unique philosophy for successfully integrating safety and health principles into the mining engineering curriculum is offered. The concept of textbook ?tailoring? is discussed and defended, permitting rapid assemblage and synthesis of existing educational materials. Final recommendations are made for a u, comprehensive approach to mine safety and health education in the undergraduate curriculum.

In recent years, there has been increased interest in construction problems presented by karst topography. Twenty-five years ago, karst areas were by-passed for development. Today, the high cost of land and population pressures are requiring utilization of karst areas. Areas exhibiting karst features can be satisfactorily developed so that construction can proceed in a normal manner; or the areas may be left undeveloped and the underground drainage system abused by improper use causing or contributing to structural collapse, excessive erosion, and a grave threat to the stability of land development and the environment. The term "karst" is a comprehensive term applied to areas underlain by soluble rock that possess a topography formed chiefly by the dissolving of rock and the diversion of surface waters to underground routes. There are four features which contribute to the maximum development of karst. 1. A soluble rock, preferably limestone, must be present at or near the surface of the ground. Occasionally, dolomite will suffice.

High pressure fluid energy grinding, or jet milling, is a versatile method of continuously fracturing solids into fine particles to gain substantial increases in exposed surface area. Applications in the minerals industries include calcium carbonate, talc, barytes, mica, diatamaceous earth, bauxite, rutile, coal, kaolin, sepiolite, diamonds, etc. The basic principles can be extended to provide continuous drying and delivery of discrete particles from a wet process slurry. The main design and operational features of jet mills and dryers are described, relating energy consumption for both air and steam milling and hot air drying techniques. Mean particle sizes in the order of 1 micron are achieveable from pre-milled feeds, or maintained from similar slurries in the drying mode. Aspects of feed preparation and multi-stage processing are discussed.

Talc, when it can be isolated as a pure mineral, has a composition of 63.36% SiO2, 31.89% MgO, and 4.75% H,O. However, as a commercial commodity less than half of all talc sold has a purity exceeding 95%. Nevertheless, impure talc products find a multitude of uses and few substitutes in many industrial applications. Minerals commonly associated with and sold together in talcose mixtures are chlorite, dolomite, mica, magnesite, and tremolite. Steatite was originally a mineralogical term applied to pure talc. Today steatite usually denotes a high-talc ceramic body used as an electrical insulator, and the talc used in such applications is known as steatitic talc. Steatitic talc generally is found in massive, high- purity form and in the past was machined directly into electrical parts, which rarely is done today. Impure varieties of massive or block talc are still commonly termed soapstone. Soft massive talc, suitable for crayon manufacture, has been referred to as French chalk. It has been common practice to discuss talc, soapstone, and pyrophyllite under the same general heading. In the case of soap- stone and talc this is natural, since many different types of platy, soft minerals exhibiting a high degree of lubricity (commonly referred to as slip) have been grouped together and called soapstone or talc. Further, there are mineralogical relationships between pyrophyllite and montmorillonite and between talc and hectorite. Thus, talc and pyrophyllite are sometimes referred to as clay minerals. When finely divided talc or pyrophyllite are combined with water in proportions to make a slurry, the end product does have the appearance of a clay-water mixture. Soapstone for utensils and ornaments was mined by prehistoric Native Americans on Santa Catalina Island, CA. In the mid- 1800s soapstone from deposits along the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains was used by white settlers as building and ornamental stone and for the linings and foundations of furnaces (Anon., 1956). Previous to 1916 the annual recorded production in California did not exceed 1.8 kt. From 1912 to 1918, however, output rose sharply when the Talc City, Western, and Silver Lake mines were put into operation. From 1916 to 1935, the state's annual output of talc was in the range of 8.2 to 18.2 kt. There was another increase in the mid-1930s, when the use of talc in wall tile grew rapidly. In California the production of talc grew to 57.2 kt in 1943. The post-war building boom helped California's production to grow to 108.9 kt in 1951. Production stood at 149.8 kt in 1968, 13 1.6 kt in 1969, 167.9 kt in 1970, and 140.7 kt in 1972. In the mid-seventies and early eighties, however, California's talc production declined to approximately 20 kt in 1992 due to reserves exhaustion and the material's tremolite content, which raised significant product liability concerns at the time. Talc mining in New York State dates from about 1878, when a Colonel Palmer and associates opened the first commercial talc mine on the Nelson Freeman farm near Talcville. In 1893 this operation was sold to International Pulp Co., which changed its name to International Talc Co. in 1944. The company was acquired by R.T. Vanderbilt Co., Inc., in 1974. A new talc operation, Gouverneur Talc Co., owned by R.T. Vanderbilt Co., began operations near Balmat, NY, in 1948. The initial capacity of the processing plant was 180 tpd (Gillingham, 1950). Subsequent expansions have increased capacity to more than 725 tpd. Talc was discovered in the area of Johnson, VT, in 1902, marking the birth of the Vermont talc industry. American Minerals Co. initiated plant operations at Johnson in 1904. MagnesiaTalc Co. opened a plant at Waterbury, VT, in 1913 (Burmeister, 1963, Trauffer, 1964) and acquired American Minerals Co. in 1923. The Waterbury mine had a long history as a producer of talc crayons. Eastern Magnesia Talc Co. was formed in 1924 by the merger of Eastern Talc Co. and Magnesia Talc Co. In 1956 Vermont Mineral Co., with a talc mine at Hammondsville, VT, was also acquired. A new plant was then built at Gassetts to produce roofing products. In order to produce high grade products for several markets, Eastern Magnesia Talc Co. began operating a modem froth flotation plant at West Windsor, VT, in 1964. The ore was provided by the Hammondsville mine. This operation, known as Windsor Minerals, Inc., continued from 1972 to 1989 as a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson Co. In 1989 Cyprus Minerals Co. acquired Vermont Talc, Inc. and Windsor Minerals, Inc.. thus consolidating the talc mining and processing operations at Hamm, Windham, Johnson, Chester, Ludlow, West Windsor, Troy, and Reading, VT, under one ownership. As the result of Cyprus' sale of its worldwide talc assets to the RTZ Group in 1992, its US talc operations are now part of Luzenac America, Inc.

INTRODUCTION The process of mining removes valuable and eco¬nomically recoverable minerals from the earth. In the case of hard-rock mining, this process involves breaking and removing ore, while leaving the waste rock or host rock as intact as possible. Prior to mining, ground stresses exist in the ore and the host rock as a result of weight and tectonic forces; for the purposes of this chapter, the ore is considered to support the host rock on both the hanging and footwall sides. Two basic phenomena accompany mining. First, the hanging walls and footwalls tend to move together as the ore is removed. Second, high stress gradients de¬velop in the rock periphery of the opening; the magni¬tudes of the stress gradients vary widely, depending upon the local geometry and conditions. At various times, mining methods have used square¬set timbers, waste-rock backfill, alluvial sand fill, and tailings backfill materials, with or without cement, to replace the loss of support caused by the removal of the ore. Cut-and-fill mining has evolved to use hydraulically placed tailings for the backfill. In the stope, this fill provides massive support to the walls, thereby reducing stresses in the back. It also provides a floor from which men and machines can work to drill and blast, to haul ore, and to scale and bolt the back. In many cases, the addition of cement provides a competent free-standing wall when the fill is exposed during mining of adjacent stopes or during pillar recovery operations. In most cases, the use of fill does not eliminate standard tem¬porary or local roof control measures such as roof bolts and wire mesh. Fill Characteristics It is important that backfill used for ground support be of maximum stiffness in relation to wall closure. The stiffness of the fill is related to its placement bulk density or void ratio. In the case of cemented tailings, this is enhanced by the cement bonds. During stope closure, individual fill particles experience rotation and crushing at point contacts, but they are subject to little relative translation. The stiffness approaches infinity as the void ratio approaches zero, until the ground forces reach equilibrium, and closure stops. The gradation of particle sizes and minimal segregation resulting from good hy¬draulic placement both contribute to a high degree of early stiffness in the closure history of classified tailings backfill. This also implies that the fill should be resistant to creeping under high static loads. All mines experience shock loading situations such as blasting, and many mines experience rock bursts that can apply sudden and very high loads to the fill. Certain conditions of void ratio, particle size, and moisture con¬tent can result in mass fluidization of unconsolidated fill during such shock loading. Two key factors in avoid¬ing fluid behavior are the provision of a well-drained fill through desliming or classification and the achievement of a small degree of consolidation through the addition of cement in ratios as lean as 40 to 1 (2.4% cement). The acceptance of classified mill tailings as backfill material has been enhanced by its relative economy, including its source, preparation, delivery, and stope distribution. Transportation from the backfill prepara¬tion plant on the surface into the stope usually can be accomplished with low power consumption, with low labor costs, with few capital costs, and at high tonnage rates. An additional benefit is a reduction of the storage volume required for surface disposal of the tailings stream, with a resultant improvement in the environ¬ment. The costs of placing cemented tailings backfill generally range from $1.65 to $6.61/t ($1.50 to $6.00 per st) of fill depending upon the cement ratio used. Scope This chapter examines a major backfill program at a mine and mill complex where the backfill facilities are included as a part of the original planning. The backfill preparation plant is intended to make maximum use of remote controls and automation. The logistics asso¬ciated with material storage, handling, and metering in the plant are outlined. Important considerations in specifying equipment for typical service conditions are discussed. The fill delivery system is described, includ¬ing the boreholes, level lines, and stope distribution lines. Stope preparations for fill confinement and drain¬age are described, as are the techniques of placement and distribution. Methods of controlling and directing the flow of drainage water and slimes are presented, along with the facilities and equipment for clarification, pumping, and sludge removal. As shown in Fig. 1, the fill program encompasses most aspects of the mining and refining facilities, so the discussion is brief in each area. The preparation of backfill of a uniform and con¬trollable quality is presented here as a material handling problem. The balance of the presentation concentrates on the logic of the system, the costs where meaningful (in 1977 US $ unless otherwise specified), and some operating "tricks" that have contributed to system per¬formance and reliability. SURFACE PREPARATION PLANT A backfill preparation plant is required on the surface. This plant generates suitable fill material from the stream of mill tailings. Among the functions of the plant are: 1) Slimes are removed to improve the percolation characteristics of the fill; typically, particles finer than 325 mesh are removed from the tailings. 2) Tailings and sand storages are provided so that the steady stream of tailings produced by the mill can be accepted. Provision is made to accommodate the cyclic high-volume demand from the mine. 3) The plant stores the cement and contains meter¬ing and mixing facilities to provide fill of a controllable and uniform quality. 4) The hydraulic backfill delivery system is a part

Since the 1948 introduction of hydraulic fill at the Sudbury Ontario Mines of the International Nickel Company of Canada, 32,000,000 tons of water-borne sandfill and 420,000 tons of portland cement addition have been placed in underground workings. Fill method mining, currently conducted at six of the ten operating mines, accounts for 28 percent of the total mines underground production. Both classified mill tailings and screened alluvial pit sand are used as fill for cut-and-fill primary mining, undercut-and-fill pillar recovery, and backfilling of blasthole and shrinkage stopes. Cemented fill, consisting of a lean mixture of portland cement, is used in areas where a stabilized fill is required to reduce dilution and aid in the recovery of adjacent pillar ore.

Dams are constructed to retard the flow of water or debris; therefore natural forces are constantly at work to remove such obstructions. To circumvent nature and avoid expensive trouble with a dam requires thoughtful far-sighted planning, careful construction control and vigilant periodic inspections to detect and repair deterioration at its inception. Although the factuality of the foregoing statements is apparent, all too many have failed to consider them in the past as will many in the future. "The economic, but safe construction of dams calls for the highest order of technical knowledge, practical experience and sound judgment." (1)

The goal of slope mechanics is to achieve efficient and safe pit slopes. In the case of ultimate mine slopes the objective is to minimize the stripping ratio by steepening the slopes to their maximum stable limit. On the other hand, the inclination of working slopes is normally established by operating space requirements and the function of slope mechanics should be the continuous surveillance of slope conditions to assure long-term stability and to provide timely warning of impending slides so that corrective measures may be incorporated in production planning. In 1956 Kennecott instituted a program to provide the resources necessary to develop and maintain a slope mechanics capability, including technical knowledge, engineers, and instruments. Although the goal has not been fully achieved, very significant progress has been made. Other papers (3, 4, 7, 8, & 12) have described the purposes and detailed results of the most recent study carried out at the Kimbley Pit. The study has provided valuable experience and has given the industry a three dimensional picture of the stability variables that influence a mine slope. The study has better defined those areas which require further investigation and has indicated those design and analytical techniques which can be used with confidence. In effect, the study has paved the way for the next step; that of refining the design process and applying it for profit.

We evaluated a new process for remediation of acid rock drainage (ARD). The process treats ARD with intermittently fluidized beds of granular limestone maintained within a continuous flow reactor pressurized with CO2. Tests were performed over a thirty day period at the Toby Creek mine drainage treatment plant, Elk County, Pennsylvania in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Equipment performance was established at operating pressures of 0,34,82, and 117 kPa using an ARD flow of 227 L/min. The ARD had the following characteristics: pH, 3.1; temperature, 10 OC; dissolved oxygen, 6.4 mg/L; acidity, 260 mg/5; total iron, 21 mg/L; aluminum, 22 mg/L; manganese, 7.5 mg/L; and conductivity, 1400 uS/cm. In all cases tested, processed ARD was net alkaline with mean pH and alkalinities of 6.7 and 59 mg/L at a CO2 pressure of 0 kPa, 6.6 and 158 mg/L at 34 kPa, 7.4 and 240 mg/L at 82 kPa, and 7.4 and 290 mg/L at 117 kPa Processed ARD alkalinities were correlated to the settled bed depth (p<0.001) and CO2 pressure (p<0.001). Iron, aluminum, and manganese removal efficiencies of 96%, 99%, and 5%, respectively, were achieved with filtration following treatment. No indications of metal hydroxide precipitation or armoring of the limestone were observed. The surplus alkalinity established at 82 kPa was successful in treating an equivalent of 1136 L/min (fivefold dilution) of the combined three ARD streams entering the Toby Creek Plant. This side-stream capability provides savings in treatment unit scale as well as flexibility in treatment effect. The capability of the system to handle higher influent acidity was tested by elevating the acidity to 5000 mg/L with sulfuric acid. Net alkaline effluent was produced, indicating applicability of the process to highly acidic ARD.

On the territory of Macedonia in South Yugoslavia primary and dory gold occurences were known since ancient times. Remnants of numerous goafs and remainders of washaries on river terraces and alluviums date right back to the times of Phillip II and his son Alexander of Macedonia and from Roman times, as well as from the Middle Ages witness exploitation of primary and secondary gold. More recent explorations on primary and secondary gold occurrences date from the period between two World Wars. Over that period a number of private companies, each on their own jointly, carried out gold exploration, particularly of alluvial occurrences on rivers emptying into River Vardar, starting from Skopje to the Greek frontier. The latest gold explorations carried out In the alluvium of River Konjska date back in 1976, and in 1978 old terraces of River Konjska were explored. The Visibility Study was prepared on possibilities of exploitation of gold from River Konjska alluvium. In the paper are collected the basic date an all known primary and secondary occurrences of gold, the results of the latest explorations, and the study itself. To-date geological explorations and analyses show very interesting potentionality of River Konjska and River Vardar alluvium, which proves continuing of he further explorations. For the moment, it is necessary to re-explore more complete view of the deposit. After that it will be possible to make complete techno-economical estimation of the auriferious alluviums and the conditions of the evaluations of the alluvial gold. 1.
