The North Shore 9 Collector System comprised an integral part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District's Water Pollution Abatement Program. The project required the construction of 1,490 m of tunnel, ranging from 1.5 m to 4.6 m in diameter along three separate alignments beneath arterial streets traversing Milwaukee's central business and cultural districts. This paper details the various aspects of the tunnel drives which were accomplished using two Lovat EPB type TBMs in conjunction with pipe-jacking procedures. Shaft configurations developed for the project, including ancillary subsidence mitigation components and portal pressurization facilities are discussed. Anomalies in observed soil behavior at variance with the parameters delineated in the project's geotechnical report are addressed.

"INTRODUCTION Conventional tailing storage and management practices typically utilize engineered facilities, such as ring dikes and valley impoundments. To reduce the environmental costs associated with disposing of mine wastes in tailing storage facilities (TSFs), several beneficial re-use strategies have been developed over the years. For example, thickened tailings have been used for paste backfill. It is common for tails to comprise up to 60% of the material’s total weight and it has been estimated that TSF volumes can be reduced by 60% when using this strategy, (Benzaazoua, et al. 2004). Other beneficial re-use strategies have produced unpaved temporary access roads, hot and cold asphalt, chip seals, self-compacting concrete, and golf course sand traps. This project sampled mine tailings from two different TSFs in Colorado and produced structural concrete that could potentially be used for commercial foundations, sidewalks, and paved roads. The tailings were substituted for the fine aggregates typically found in conventional concrete. The two main objectives of this study were to investigate the structural integrity of the produced concrete samples and the leaching of heavy metals from the resulting concrete. The ratio of tailings to fine aggregate (T/FA) was carefully studied to find if there was a correlation between the substitution rate and the structural integrity. The potential maximum substitution rate was also investigated for the produced concrete specimens. The potential of leaching mining impacted water (MIW) was evaluated by comparing the leachability of the raw mine tailings to the encapsulated tailings by using standard shake extraction prediction tests. MATERIAL AND METHODS Materials The four components that make up the concrete mix design for this project are: cement, coarse aggregate (gravel), fine aggregate (sand and mine tailings), and water. The type I/II ordinary Portland cement (OPC), gravel, and sand came from local cement and concrete companies in Denver, Colorado. Mine tailings were collected from two different TSFs in the Rocky Mountain Region, where Pride of the West TSF in Silverton, CO will be denoted as Site A. The primary metals of interest at the mill site are gold, silver, lead, copper, and zinc. The location of Site B will not be mentioned in this report due to confidentiality agreements with the mining company"

"Canopy air curtain (CAC) technology has been developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for use on continuous miners and subsequently roof bolting machines in underground coal mines to protect operators of these machines from overexposure to respirator coal mine dust. The next logical progression is to develop a CAC for shuttle cars to protect operators from the same overexposures. NIOSH awarded a contract to Marshall University and J.H. Fletcher to develop the shuttle car CAC. NIOSH conducted laboratory testing to determine the dust control efficiency of the shuttle car CAC. Testing was conducted on two different cab configurations: a center drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AA cab model and an end drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AB cab model. Three different ventilation velocities were tested—0.61, 2.0, 4.3 m/s (120, 400, and 850 fpm). The lowest, 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), represented the ventilation velocity encountered during loading by the continuous miner, while the 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) velocity represented ventilation velocity airflow over the shuttle car while tramming against ventilation airflow. Test results showed an average of the dust control efficiencies ranging from 74–83% for 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), 39–43% for 2.0 m/s (400 fpm), and 6–16% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm). Minor modifications to the shuttle car CAC design and placement improved the dust control efficiency to 51–55% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) with minimal impact on dust control efficiencies for lower ventilation velocities. These laboratory tests demonstrate that the newly developed shuttle car CAC has the potential to successfully protect shuttle car operators from coal mine respirable dust overexposures. INTRODUCTION The development of the canopy air curtain (CAC) dates back to the 1970s starting with the initial development of the CAC by the Donaldson Company, Inc. under contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines [Krisko 1975]. This CAC was originally developed for continuous miner operators when continuous mining machines had cabs. The need for a CAC on the continuous miner was eliminated when the cab was removed from the machine design. However, CAC development progressed to include CAC designs for a roof bolting machine to protect roof bolters from respirable coal mine dust [Goodman and Organiscak 2002, Listak and Beck 2012, Reed et al. 2017]. This roof bolting machine CAC research continues to the present day."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines implemented the Fe2+ /Fe3+-SO2 anode reaction in a Cu electrowinning cell with full-size electrodes. Electrowinning was conducted using industrial electrolyte at 258 A/m2 (24 A/ft2) and 40 'C. Manifold injection of electrolyte provided circulation between the electrodes. Five-day operation using an optimized manifold gave an average cell voltage of 0.94 V at 89% current efficiency, which amounted to an energy savings of 2.82 MJ/kg (0.355 kW-hr/lb) compared to conventional electrowinning. Acid misting was completely eliminated, and SO2 concentration 23 cm (9 in.) above the cell averaged 0.06 ppm.

LKAB's Kiruna mine, located above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, is one of the world's largest underground mines, and it is one of the most modern. The Kiruna orebody is a high-grade magnetite containing about 80% low-phosphorous iron ore and about 20% high-phosphorous iron ore in situ. The mining method used is large-scale sublevel caving. Due to the blending of high-phosphorous ore with low-phosphorous ore during the extraction process, only about 20% of the run-of-mine ore can be used for the mine's low-phosphorous product. The blending process is highly irregular and difficult for the mine-planning personnel to predict. An algorithm was developed that uses principles of gravity flow to predict the run-of-mine phosphorous grades from the in situ geologic block model. The model can be used for both long- and short-term predictions.

This study investigates the feasibility of rock bolting support in an underground coal mine gallery with a thick coal seam. The Ömerler underground coal mine working area, owned by West Lignite Enterprise of Turkish Coal Enterprises, was selected for this purpose. Longwall top coal caving is implemented as the production method in the Ömerler underground coal mine. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to determine rock mass and rock material properties, followed by experimental, empirical and numerical analyses based on the acquired data. The obtained design results were evaluated using a resin-grouted rebar rock bolting (RBR) system and steel arch support (SAS) pilot application areas. The numerical modeling results conducted using the fast Lagrangian analysis of the Continua 3D (FLAC 3D v6.0) program indicated less displacement and secondary stress change in the RBR-supported zone compared to the SAS-supported zone. In situ measurements also demonstrated that RBR provided more successful support to the roof during coal production activities. The findings suggest that RBR is a more effective solution when evaluating the feasibility of rock bolting support systems in underground galleries with thick coal seams at the Ömerler Mine. This study emphasizes the importance of more sustainable and safe support systems to enhance operational efficiency in the coal mining industry.

With the rapid development of renewable energy technology, such as electricity reserves to store energy for electric and battery-electric vehicles, environmentally friendly energy sources are expected to continue to be tapped to meet mobility and stationary energy needs. Lithium is the most attractive candidate for energy storage development. The presence of lithium in the Sidoarjo mud in Indonesia makes it interesting for use as an alternative source of raw material. In this research work, sulfuric acid was used as a solvent, and hydrogen peroxide as an oxidation agent. Lithium recovery was studied with a leaching process at various temperatures (30, 45 and 60 °C) and sulfuric acid concentrations (0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 mol/L). Increases in temperature, sulfuric acid concentration and hydrogen peroxide concentration were found to directly affect the lithium recovery. An increase in sulfuric acid concentration is directly proportional to the recovery of lithium in the solution. Optimum conditions were obtained at a sulfuric acid concentration of 6 mol/L and temperature of 60 °C. The shrinking core model was used to study leaching kinetics, and ash layer diffusion acted as a rate-controlling process. The activation energy of the leaching process was found to be 38.90 kJ/mol.

Effective management of ore loss and dilution is essential for successful grade control and short-term mine planning due to their significant impact on the economic, environmental and technical aspects of openpit mining operations. Factors influencing ore loss and dilution fall into two categories: (1) controllable factors, like mine equipment selectivity and blast design, and (2) uncontrollable factors, such as spatial heterogeneity of ore and waste blocks on a bench. This paper focuses on the second category by applying spatial entropy concept to capture heterogeneity at the scale of selective mining units. In this paper, global spatial entropy is used to assess the impact of spatial heterogeneity between ore and waste blocks on the magnitude of ore loss and dilution, while the local spatial entropy can guide the allocation of blast movement monitoring balls preblast. High values of the global spatial entropy indicate increasing potential of ore loss and dilution, which reduce profit. Furthermore, through a number of case studies, the study investigates the relationship between spatial entropy, cutoff grades, blast movement, dig-limits optimization model running time, and profit. The results show that changes in cutoff grade and blast movement can significantly affect spatial entropy post-blasting and increase ore loss, dilution and profit reduction, revealing the need for controlled blasting at specific bench sections. Additionally, the results demonstrate an exponential increase in profit reduction due to ore loss and dilution with a rising global spatial entropy

Flotation is the most efficient and preferred solid-solid separation method in mineral processing. However, enhanced production of high-grade concentrates at sufficiently high recovery still poses technological challenges to-day. A novel flotation method to produce final-grade concentrates from finely-ground ores in a single step is being developed and tested by CANMET. For the complex sulphide ores tested, grades are superior while recovery is considerably improved. Furthermore, concentrate production rates, at similar recoveries, are faster than for the conventional rougher-scavenger-cleaner configuration. This paper discusses the physical operating parameters affecting Cu-Zn flotation metallurgy.

Respirable rock dust poses serious long-term health effects to workers in mining and tunneling underground hard rock environments. When inhaled, respirable silica particles commonly found in quartz and other minerals will scar sensitive lung tissue and cause irreversible lung diseases. Characteristics such as concentration, type of mineral, particle size, and particle shape inhaled can harm workers to various extents. Therefore, this study characterizes rock dust particles less than 100µm in aerodynamic diameter that are released from cutting hard rock in the underground mining environment. In this study, laboratory full scale cutting tests on samples of potash rock were performed with radial picks to generate dust. Three stages of pick wear were tested: new, moderately worn, and severely worn. Comparisons between different stages of pick wear to dust concentration, size distribution, and particle shape characteristics are drawn from this study to start determining the scenarios when the released airborne dusts become potentially most hazardous for workers. Although further testing needs to be conducted to make viable conclusions, the moderately worn pick, or the pick with the most blunt tip, in these experiments are potentially the most dangerous. The blunt pick tip released the highest concentration of dust and generated particle shapes with the highest aspect ratio compared to the other two picks. The preliminary results of this study allow for the further development of optimum bit management and maintenance systems to control the exposure of respirable dust to mine workers.

I cannot help but be reminded, as I stand here today, of my boyhood years and heritage, both of which are inextricably tied to this very valley and are, in a: bay, apropos of the theme of this Keynote Session. I remember the scarcity of people. For example, 48, 000 in Phoenix and 436, 000 in the State in 1930 and 65,000 in Phoenix and 499, 000 in the State in 1940. Today Phoenix boasts a population of over 500, 000 and the State a population of 1, 500,000. I remember the' lack of facilities, goods and services, including gas and electric power. I recall stories of my grandfather who had the freighting or teaming contract to haul all the supplies and generating equipment, by wagon mind you, up the old Apache Trail to Roosevelt Dam. . .a three day trip from the nearest railhead which, by the way, was not Phoenix, for it did not merit a railhead on those days, but the village of Maricopa approximately 25 miles south of Phoenix. I remember chopping firewood, heating wash water on an open fire in a No. 3 wash tub at the rear of the house and doing my school homework by the light of a kerosene lamp just 25 to 35 years ago within what is now a large metropolitan area

Last year in the US alone, about 425 Mt (468 million st) of minerals and coal were beneficiated by froth flotation. This number indicates that from 1983 there was a 10% increase in tonnage of min¬erals and coal beneficiated by the indus¬try. A significant improvement was seen in the tonnage processed by the nonferrous minerals and coal industries. BP Minerals America installed 85 m; (3000 cu ft) flotation cells at the Bing¬ham Canyon mine and concentrator. The new flotation circuit has fewer than 100 cells compared to 2000 flotation cells used in the old plant (Mining Engi¬neering, November 1988). Column flotation use on a commer¬cial scale continues to expand as seen from the interest expressed at the Col¬umn Flotation Symposium (Column Flotation '88). The Magma Copper Co., San Manuel Division replaced all con¬ventional cells with 1.8 x 12 m (6 x 40 ft) column flotation cells for copper con¬centrate cleaning. Also, 1220 mm and 760 mm-diam (48 in. and 30 in.-diam) column cells are operating at the plant in the molybdenum circuit. A commercial Diester Flotaire col¬umn cell for fine coal recovery was installed at the United Coal Wellmore No. 20 plant. The 36.8 m3 (1300 cu ft) cell recovers 13.6 to 18 t/h (15 to 20 stph) of -590 gm (-28 mesh) coal. A similar unit has been installed at Tanoma Mining Co. in Pennsylvania. Various modifications of the column cells are being designed around the world. Jameson (Mining and Metal¬lurgy, 1988) described a new concept whereby the feed and air stream mixture is discharged into a cylindrical column of about 1.2 m (4 ft) height. Recovery and grade of nonferrous minerals have been reported to be better than that in a four-stage conventional flotation clean¬ing circuit. Flotation reagents American Cyanamid and Dow Chemical continued development of a new generation of sulfide collectors. A general feeling is development of new sulfide collectors has not kept up with flotation technology. Additionally, joint efforts between industry and chemical suppliers will likely be necessary to realize the economic benefits of the new technologies, since new chemistries respond differently compared to the conventional collectors. Flocculant development in recent years has been evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Rothenborg reported on development of a new flocculant family (a hydroxymated polyacrylamide desig¬nated S-6703) that has shown consider¬able promise in red mud clarification. Plant testing showed that this new floc¬culant could replace starch and poly¬acrylate and provide significantly higher overflow clarity. Barol Kami (Siirak) and Cleveland¬Cliffs (Hancock) reported development of an amphoteric apatite collector (ATRAC 873) that was used in Tilden's silica flotation process to increase apatite rejection. The collector was engineered for the particular flotation conditions in the complex Tilden process. Significant plant testing with ATRAC 873 showed that this reagent gave significantly in¬creased apatite rejection without any effect on silica flotation effectiveness or selectivity. Electrostatic separation Electrostatic separation is now em¬ployed in the precious metals mining industry to recover gold and silver grills from crushed slag. The installation at Paradise Peak has prompted other op¬erators to consider this application. In another development, attractive potentials for treating very fine minerals (-45 µm or -325 mesh) are being devel¬oped by Advanced Energy Dynamics and by the Department of Energy. Demonstration tests using triboelectric charging/electrostatic separation have been successful on a variety of minerals as well as coal. Magnetic separation Developments in magnetic separa¬tion have transpired on a production scale. Superconducting, high gradient magnetic separation has gained accep¬tance with the successful startup of a second unit treating kaolin at J.M. Huber Corp. This liquid-helium-cooled mag¬net generates 2.0 tesla in a 3-m-diam (120-in.-diam) bore with no power con¬sumption. Wet, high-intensity magnetic separation has been applied to sulfide mineral separations both domestically and abroad. These continuous type of separators are effective in removing residual chalcopyrite and sphalerite from other base metal sulfide concentrates. Separators using high energy rare earth permanent magnets are continu¬ally increasing. Now offered as both drum and roll type, these units are be¬coming a staple in the processing of industrial minerals. Tests using rare earth magnets strategically placed on a spiral concentrator have demonstrated the enhanced recovery of heavy miner¬als such as ilmenite. Classification Although no major technology break¬throughs in classification appear immi¬nent, there is an increasing need for more efficient and cost-effective meth¬ods to make size separations. Until recently, the volumes delivered and unloaded from heap-leaching pads have been estimated by manual methods at Wharf Resources' South Dakota operation. In August 1989, the Engineering Department acquired the MINE-SURVEY software developed by GEM COM Services, Inc. of Vancouver, Canada, as part of a mine planning/grade control software package. The implementation of MINE-SURVEY for pad control resulted in a cost-effective tool to provide accurate and prompt estimates of ore delivered or unloaded from the pads. Volumes can be calculated in a matter of minutes as opposed to hours or days. Another benefit is the ease of comparison of as-build and designed volumes, plotting cross-section in any orientation, importing into AUTOCAD, validation of ore densities and truck factors. This paper describes the application of the MINE-SURVEY systems in heap leaching pad volumetrics.

This study summarizes the results of various numerical and laboratory experiments per-formed to study the effect of airflow recirculation on gas concentration. The numerical exercises were carried out on a simulated mine ventilation net-work. The laboratory experiments were conducted at the Mackay School of Mines' airflow monitoring system in Reno, Nevada. In both cases, the airflow was recirculated through the system by means of a main fan and a set of booster fans. The booster fans were positioned to produce two types of recirculation: In line and Cross-cut. For each type, various recirculation conditions were generated by changing the booster fan pressure. During each test, the gas emission rate at the simulated working face was kept constant. The study illustrates the conditions under which controlled airflow recirculation may be used to solve a district ventilation problem.

The kinetics of loading of gold from bromide solution onto an anion exchange resin, PAZ-4, were investigated in a batch stirred reactor. The initial loading rate was described mathematically by a first-order reaction rate equation. The effect of agitation speed, temperature, resin particle size, resin concentration, initial concentration of gold and bromine in solution on the rate was investigated. The model described fairly accurately the loading process in terms of the variables investigated. The rate constant for the initial loading ranged from 0.5 to 1.3 x10-3 sec-1 and the half-time was 9.3 to 56 minutes. The initial rate constant increased with increasing temperature with an activation energy of 15.7 kJ/mole (3.8 kcal/mole). The rate constant was directly proportional to the concentration of the resin in solution. The subsequent reduction reaction was also modeled by the first-order rate equation and the apparent rate constant was estimated to be 3.0 x 10-6 sec-1 with a half-time of about 44 hours.

"Methane gas explosions in a longwall coal mine can originate from in or around the gob and can seriously harm nearby workers and equipment. In order to fully understand the explosion flame and pressure wave propagation in the mine, it is important to investigate methane flame propagation in confined spaces as well as flame interaction with rock rubble and other mine structures. The latter can lead to enhanced turbulence causing high-speed deflagrations and/or detonations. Researchers ignited methane-air mixtures in horizontal, cylindrical reactors that contained inserts to simulate various gob characteristics. Rock surface topology and ignition location were investigated. Results show rock surface roughness increased fluid motion, thereby increasing methane flame front propagation velocity, overall pressure rise of the explosion, and time of pressure decay. Moving the point of ignition away from the open end of the reactor resulted in an increase in peak overpressure and an overall pressure rise of the explosion. Experiments were used to validate a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) combustion model that will be incorporated into a mine-scale explosion model to simulate and predict explosion hazards of large scale methane gas deflagrations in longwall coal mines. INTRODUCTION Coal mining is an integral part to our global society with coal-fired power plants providing about 40% of our global electricity [1]. A common method of extracting coal underground is by longwall mining. Researchers and investigative reports have found that explosive gas zones of methane-air mixtures can form along the longwall face and within the longwall gob, presenting an explosion risk to nearby workers and equipment [2]. In an explosion, the resulting flame and pressure wave presents a fatal traumatic injury hazard and can cause serious damage to equipment. In order to evaluate and mitigate the explosion risks in longwall coal mining, researchers at the Colorado School of Mines are developing a coupled CFD and combustion model of a longwall coal mine. The purpose of the model will be to better predict the explosion hazards under various mine conditions in order to build stronger prevention and mitigation strategies for miners."

The White River Shale Oil Corporation (WRSOC), as agent for Phillips Petroleum Company, Sohio Shale Oil Company, and Sun Shale Oil Company, is developing a prototype oil shale facility on Federal Lease Tracts Ua and Ub, located in northeastern Utah and known as the White River Shale Project (WRSP). The Ralph M. Parsons Company (Parsons) has been retained as the design engineer/constructor for the project. This paper covers the successful pregrouting of the Bird's Nest Aquifer in conjunction with the sinking of a 9.2-m (30-ft)-diameter shaft and driving of a 3.89-m by 5.64-m (18.5-ft by 12.75-ft) decline. The Bird's Nest Aquifer derives its name from the ellipsidal solution cavities caused by leaching of random-size nacholite nodules. The sodium bicarbonate nodules occur as persistent bands within a matrix of siltstone and marlstone. The team, made up of the owner, engineer/contractor, and subcontractor successfully grouted the shaft down to an inflow of less than 0.06 lps (1 gmp) and the decline down to less than 0.12 lps (2 gpm) by injecting a total of 213.190 kg (470,000 lb) of Celtite Terraseal, 113,400 kg (250,000 lb) of limestone dust, and 41,730 kg (92,000 lb) of cement into the formation.

This study investigated the performance of citric acid as lixiviant for cathode material from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Black mass containing 84.2 weight percent MNC (LiNi0.45Mn0.4Co0.15O2) and 15.8 weight percent LCO (LiCoO2) material was leached at solid-to-liquid ratios of 20, 50 and 100 g/L. Leaching with 1.5 M citric acid, 2 volume percent H2O2 and a solid-to-liquid ratio of 20 g/L at 95 °C extracted 90 percent Co, 95 percent Li, 94 percent Mn and 94 percent Ni within 20 min. At the highest solid-to-liquid ratio of 100 g/L with 1.5 M citric acid, 10 volume percent H2O2 and 95 °C, 84 percent Al, 84 percent Co, 87 percent Li, 86 percent Mn and 96 percent Ni were leached after 40 min, producing a leach solution containing 0.68 g/L Al, 20.0 g/L Co, 6.0 g/L Li, 13.6 g/L Mn and 19.3 g/L Ni. Using stepwise addition of H2O2, instead of initial bulk addition, did not significantly improve the leaching efficiency but did reduce the required leaching time. Temperature control of the reactor was also more manageable with stepwise addition of H2O2, and evolution of gas was less vigorous. It was observed that the leaching efficiencies of Co, Li and Mn decreased slightly at solid-to-liquid ratios of 50 and 100 g/L, while the leaching of Ni increased slightly. The solution leached at 20 g/L could be stored for six weeks without any spontaneous precipitation. However, solutions leached at 50 and 100 g/L showed changes in concentration after one month of storage, suggesting that processes that have a large material throughput and use high solid-to-liquid ratios around 100 g/L must ensure that the solutions are not stored for extended periods of time.

The Walnut Creek Mine was developed in 1989 to supply lignite to the Texas-New Mexico Power TNP-ONE power plant. Being new, we had the opportunity to start from scratch and rethink many of the traditional methods of managing a mine operation. We had the opportunity to create a team environment, encouraging people to get involved and make decisions. The founding philosophy of the mine, "A Quality Product by Quality People", acknowledged that the key to a productive, quality operation was the people. This paper will explore methods employed by Walnut Creek in selection of team members, building the team and the relative success of these methods.
