The amount of toxic fumes produced during blasting operation depends on the types of explosives used, product formulation, degree of confinement, conditions of use, and reactivity of the explosives with the host rock. Ammonium nitrate and fuel oil (ANFO) is still the explosive of choice due to its lower price and ease of use/loading. If not properly monitored and controlled, toxic fumes produced from blasting operations can have serious health hazards [1]. This paper presents a novel technique developed to track trapped fumes during a development blasting.

A roof bolting drilling operation in an underground coal mine can expose the operator to a high concentration of respirable coal and crystalline silica dusts (smaller than 10 µm). Overexposure of high-level quartz dust for a roof bolter operator can lead to the development of silicosis in as little as three years [1]. This study proposes a drilling control algorithm for the bolt hole drilling process. This algorithm can be integrated into a current drilling control system on the roof bolter machinery and is expected to reduce the generation of respirable dust while enhancing the energy efficiency of the roof bolter machine. In addition, the drilling efficiency and bit condition can be evaluated while drilling based on the real-time feedback parameters. This capability enables the algorithm to ensure the drilling is performed under a relatively high energy efficiency with less respirable dust generation and to avoid drilling with an excessively worn bit that can cause bit clogging or steel buckling failure.

The Mesabi Range extends continuously from near Grand Rapids, on the Mississippi River, E.N.E. for a distance of about 1120 miles to near Birch Lake, where it is covered by the large gabbro flow which forms the base of the Keweenawan series. The same formation (Mesabi) appears again near Gunflint Lake on the international boundary, and shows as far east as Thunder Bay on the north shore of Lake Superior. Between Mesabi station, on the Duluth and Iron Range Railway, and Birch Lake, although considerable exploration work has been done, there is no evidence of concentration of ore in workable bodies. The Gunflint beds are thin alternating layers of chert and hematite. Alt the workable deposits at present known, on the Mesabi, lie between Mesabi station and Grand Rapids, the greater number being St. Louis County simplified geologic column is given herewith instead of the complete correlation table given by the United States Geological survey.

The Newell Creek Dam Inlet/Outlet Replacement Project is located approximately 11 miles north of Santa Cruz, California along Highway 9 in the San Lorenzo Valley. This project will replace the existing inlet/outlet works at the Loch Lomond Reservoir by constructing a tunnel using conventional excavation methods while simultaneously drilling three intake shafts to intercept the tunnel from within the city’s water supply. This project will improve the system’s overall operational efficiency and performance, and provide a safe and reliable facility for the City of Santa Cruz’s drinking water supply. This paper discusses the overall project configuration, construction observations, and challenges during construction, including tunnel excavating through the marine sedimentary siltstone of the Monterey Formation, probing and pre-excavation grouting, and the tools utilized to manage the project.

The ultimate objectives and interest in removal of sulfur from high sulfur coal include: (a) reduction of the atmospheric load that con- tributes to the problem of acid precipitation; (b) reduction of ash which contributes to decreased energy transfer in boilers and the problem of ash disposal; and (c) alleviating the social and economic dislocations related to uneven geographical distribution of sulfur in coal reserves. The cost of sulfur removal in relation to the value of refined coal will govern the development of an emerging coal-refining industry. The value of refined lower sulfur coal will be influenced by the national commitment to the environment as well as economic considerations.

This study evaluates the roof-bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) system in an exhausting face ventilation system, demonstrating its effectiveness and illustrating the CAC protection zones. Two scenarios are considered: (1) a roof-bolting machine in the center of the entry for installation of the fifth row of bolts from the face, and (2) a roof-bolting machine positioned close to the face for the installation of the last row of bolts. In both scenarios, the bolting machine is placed in an environment that contains 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust and is ventilated by an exhaust curtain with 9,000 cfm (4.25 m3/s) of air to simulate the roof-bolter machine operating downstream of a continuous mining machine. Two operation positions are simulated at the same bolting location: dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts and in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3/s) with dust reductions ranging from 39.5 to 82.8 percent. When the roof bolter is operated close to the face, increasing CAC airflow was required for adequate protection, as the dust reductions can be as low as 39.5 percent. Increasing CAC airflows to 350 cfm (0.17 m3/s) and 450 cfm (0.21 m3/s) were evaluated, demonstrating that dust reductions increased to 59.7 percent (350 cfm) and 72.0 percent (450 cfm). These results revealed improvement in respirable dust reductions compared to the CAC airflows at 250 cfm when the bolter is operated close to the face, showing the CAC can provide protection against high respirable dust concentrations for roof-bolter operators.

Mine backfilling is a desirable method for the disposal of retorted oil shale. Hydraulic, mechanical and pneuna.cic transport and stowing methods were investigated, and the mechanical transport and stowing method using conveyors was selected as the most promising system. Transport of retorted oil shale at the rate of 3000 cons per hour (2700 t(h) to the backfill level, situated about: 2000 feet (610 m) below surface, with skips or conveyors is uneconomic. Hence, borehole transport utilizing gravity flow was investigated. This paper describes the theory of flow, flow properties of retorted oil shale, and the design of a borehole and hopper system.

To assist with design, pricing, and assessment of risk on this progressive design-build project, 3D design models were prepared to increase visibility into realities of construction. This paper will focus on the original intent of the models and explore the additional, unforeseen value they provided throughout the design and construction process.

The Appalachian coal region is an area here the small mining operation dominates. The large number of small operations makes the coal industry in chat area very competitive, the industry concentration ratio being low. This feature is reflected in the nature and behavior of the coal supply and demand viz a viz the coal market. The vast majority of the small coal operations in Eastern Kentucky for example, are contractors. The circumstances under which a large mining company can elect to use contractors to supplement their coal production are examined. The pros and cons of small underground single unit mines and larger multiple unit mines are discussed.

Ever since the industrial Revolution both major and small companies have put much emphasis on the use of incentives to compensate top management for extra effort and extra skill. For many years industries have also provided hourly rate employees with incentive plans. More recently incentive plans have been extended to include the "front line" supervisors. Many companies have what are called Christmas bonus or profit-sharing plans. The incentives for foremen in mining, which we shall discuss, differ from such bonus plans in that the incentives are paid on a definite measured performance for each individual, and thus directly reflect his effort and skill. What is the objective for paying incentives? The objective for any part of an industrial Engineering Program is to increase productivity and reduce unit cost. The unit cost must include the entire cost of the program. From what base do we start an incentive plan? One should think of art incentive program as the top rung of the Industrial Engineering ladder. Therefore, a company must take several steps before reaching this top rung. The Buick Mine is a joint venture of American Metals Climax, Inc., and Homestake Mining Company located 120 miles by road southwest of St. Louis, near the village of Boss, in the 'New Missouri Lead Belt' (See Figure 1). Since start-up in 1969, over four million tons of lead-zinc ore have been mined and milled at Buick. Situated about 1,100 feet below the surface at an elevation 270 feet above sea level, the flat lying sinuous ore bodies are up to 250 feet wide, 85 feet high and several thousand feet long. Mineralization is galena, sphalerite and chalcopyrite in dolomite, Access to the mine is through two 18'Ø concrete lined vertical shafts - one for servicing and the other for hoisting ore (See Figure 2). The mine is being worked by a modified room and pillar method using both rubber tired equipment and a sub-level rail haulage. Ore is broken from first pass headings, back and bench faces and transported by load-haul-dump units to ore passes located on 900 foot centers. The ore is pulled from chutes on the sublevel 90 feet below into 15 ton bottom dump cars and delivered in 10 car lots by a 15 ton diesel locomotive to a 42" gyratory crusher (See Figure 3). A recent innovation has been the introduction of two 50 ton trucks with plans to haul up to 60% of the ore on the mining level to an ore pass feeding directly to the primary crusher (See Figure 4). Ventilation raises up to 16'Ø, which were originally planned for 900 foot centers, are now driven on 450 foot centers.

Capital investments are made for a variety of purposes, from providing incremental capacity at existing operations to developing and implementing new technologies intended to radically improve a company's capabilities. These projects generate very different business opportunities and create value in distinctive ways. For incremental improvements, the capital budgeting process assures at least a loose fit between short-term goals and readily available resources. However, the criteria used to evaluate capital projects often prevent a company from committing to more aggressive goals that lie beyond the firm's current abilities or resources. Such projects may not have clearly identifiable future cash flows, and the degree of interaction with other projects and the nature of the risk incurred may be difficult to estimate. Additionally, by focusing only on quantifiable benefits, the budgeting process often fails to recognize "soft" improvements such as increased operating flexibility or new knowledge generated by such projects. By rejecting these projects, the capital budgeting process may actually harm the company's future competitive position.

The presence of radioactivity in uranium mill wastes has resulted in somewhat unique waste disposal methods. In addition to the common problems of disposing of large quantities of solid wastes, neutralizing acids, minimizing dissolved heavy metals, and clarifying all liquid effluents, the uranium mill operator must sample and analyze liquid effluents for micro-micro quantities of radionuclides such as, radium-226, thorium-230 and lead-210. Special disposal methods or decontamination procedures are required to meet the stringent limitations established by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission on the concentration of radionuclides in liquid effluents. Routine monitoring of the receiving stream is also normally required. In recent years there has been a growing concern about the radioactivity remaining in the uranium mill tailings, particularly at the sites of shut-down or dismantled mills. The State of Colorado, in cooperation with the industry, has adopted regulations for stabilization of inactive uranium mill tailings. The Mining and Metals Division of Union Carbide operates mills for the recovery of uranium and vanadium at Uravan and Rifle in Colorado and a mill in the Gas Hills of Wyoming for uranium production. The company also owns former mill sites on which mill tailings are located at Maybell, Rifle, and Slick Rock in Colorado and at Green River, Utah. The purpose of this paper is to describe the methods used by a few uranium mills, largely those operated by Union Carbide Corporation, to dispose of radioactive wastes, to discuss briefly the regulations under which the mills operate, and to present reference information on the subject.

The Surface Mining control and Reclamation Act (public Law 95-87) (here-inafter the "Act" or "SMCRA") passed by congress in August of 1977 represents a comprehensive federal scheme for controlling surface coal mining and the surface effects of underground mining through permitting requirements, performance guidelines, and reclamation planning. While the provisions of the Act have been the subject of numerous legal challenges and court battles over the years, it is difficult to identify a more controversial program within the Act than the provisions for designating lands as unsuitable for surface coal mining operations. The lands unsuitable designation process provides for the acceptance and review of petitions submitted by citizens or organizations seeking to have specified land areas designated unsuitable for all or certain types of surface coal mining activities. In filing these petitions, the interested parties or petitioners are required to make allegations about potential adverse impacts on people or the environment and submit evidence supporting their allegations.

Optimization has been defined as the procedure of locating the best of something or the best way of doing something (Mular, 1971). Several texts (Himmelblau, 1972; Ray and Szekeley, 1973; Box and Draper, 1969; and Lee, Adams, and Gaines, 1968) on the subject are available. Such techniques have been placed in two categories, namely, off-line optimization and on-line optimization. For the former, an optimization model is employed; for the latter, a black box approach is involved. The essence of an optimization problem becomes obvious, when a response surface is considered. Suppose that a response (in this case, a criterion of improvement such as profit per day; grade of concentrate per day) denoted by Y, depends only on two variables, X1 and X2, which can be manipulated and controlled. The relationship between Y, X1 and X2 may be represented graphically as shown in Fig. 1. The diagram is called a response surface and its height, Y, is determined by X1 and X2. Points associated with equal responses constitute response contours. The shape is that of a hill, and optimization is the procedure of ascending the hill to reach the top (maximum). In practice, a response surface is subject to disturbances which distort its shape and shift its location from time to time, so that the exact location of a maximum is imprecise. Generally, constraints (restrictions of some sort) on responses and manipulable variables serve to define a region of permissible operation.

There are certain data handling techniques used by statisticans that can help one to calculate the size of an orebody and to develop some of the relationships between size, cutoff grade, average grade, mining cost, and profit. Knowing the relationships amongst these factors can help determine the most desirable operating conditions. A statistical technique that we will use is data grouping. This allows us to work with relatively few groups instead of many samples, If we were able to segregate the ore in an orebody into grade groups, add the amounts in each group, and plot the sums as a curve, we would get something like Figure 1. A smooth curve develops when the grade classes are small enough, otherwise a "stair step? histogram results. The area under the curve, being the sum of the tonnages in all of the grade classes, is proportional to the total number of tons in the orebody. If we take the data of a distribution such as Figure 1 and add the tonnages above a specific grade we have in effect a cutoff grade

Hydraulic powered supports have been employed in the U. S. longwall mining for the last two' decades. Yet the sciences of roof control at the powered supported faces remain largely unknown. Many questions remain unanswered. To address the problems, field investigations were conducted from 1980 to 1984 in seven longwall faces (1-10)(Table 1). Some of the findings have been reported by Peng and Chiang (11). The basic geological conditions of these panels are listed in Table 2. The mining equipment used in these longwall panels are listed in Table 3. Instrumentation and Observation Programs Two events were generally instrumented: one was the hydraulic leg pressures of the powered supports, and the other was the canopy and base plate load distributions.

The Coteau Properties Company's Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mining operation located near Beulah, North Dakota. As part of the mining process, Coteau removes and replaces thin layers of suitable plant growth material (SPGM) generally ranging in thickness between one and five feet. Historically, tractor-scrapers completed this work; however, rising tractor-scraper costs and increasing haulage distances sent Coteau in search of a lower cost method resulting in the acquisition of a backhoe/truck fleet in 1995.

The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT), under sponsorship of the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research (OCR), and the American Gas Association (A. G. A. ), has been undertaking the development of one of several processes to convert coal to high-Btu gas as a means of supplementing natural gas supplies. It is anticipated that there will be a significant need for such gas in the foreseeable future in order to meet the ever increasing demands for this preferred fuel form. HISTORY The development of the HYGAS® Process is based on various studies conducted at IGT starting back as far as 1945. Initial work was directed toward production of synthesis gas with subsequent catalytic methanation. By 1964 the concept of the direct hydrogenation of coal to produce methane noncatalytically was well-founded and the chemistry was reasonably well established. Work up until this point in time was financed by the American Gas Association. In 1964 the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research joined with A. G. A. to support the program. The objective at that time was to develop the necessary know-how to enable the design of a pilot plant, a necessary step in the ultimate commercialization of the process. Work for the next three years (1964-1967) emphasized investigation of fluidized-bed technology in the hydrogasification step, where moving-bed technology had been previously employed, as well as identification of commercially available catalysts acceptable for catalytic methanation of the CO and hydrogen in the hydrogasifier effluent under operating conditions in the system. By 1967, the preliminary design of a 3 ton/hr pilot plant had been finalized, and IGT received authorization from OCR to proceed with the detailed design and construction of that facility. Coal mining today is confronted with numerous problems, all of which affect in some way the ability of the operator to produce profitably. The major endeavor, therefore, is a quest for cost lowering techniques. Complete belt haulage from shuttle car to river barge appeared to be a step in such a direction. A deep look into all aspects proved this to be more involved than just the installation of such a belt line. With this paper, we will attempt to present to you the problems and requirements of design and installation of an all-belt haulage system, believed to be the longest underground belt installation in the world at this time. The first and most important item is the justification of an all-belt haulage system. The following is a brief history of the coal property and the facts affecting our decision.
